Féile na Bealtaine is imaginative, resourceful, creative, inventive, honest, original, gifted, inclusive, humorous, visionary, chaotic, grateful, bewitching, magical, fallible, loyal, kind hearted, extraordinarily generous, altruistic, and doesn’t suffer fools gladly! Which is probably a fair description of all the people who live in this wonderous place. Féile na Bealtiane is not about an organising committe, it is much greater than any group of individuals. It is about everyone who helps, participates, attends events, supports, provides a venue, gives a word of encouragement, brings out the band, gets up early, stays out late, volunteers at doors, runs the office, tracks ticket sales, creative schools creating magic, introduces events, opens the festival, organise a street spectacle with over 1000 participants and an audience of even more! We never know exactly how it will work, never quite sure if all will fall into place or fall into pieces. Féile na Bealtaine roared into life across the Peninsula, after a long damp and dark winter, the only comfort from the rain, were the successful football teams of Dingle agus An Gaeltacht in mid-January. This year’s Féile kicked off our summer with an abundance of all that is magnificent about the Dingle Peninsula. We sang, danced, laughed, cried, listened, walked, talked and were provoked over six memorable days. Who will ever forget the extravagant splash of colour, feathers and sounds on the streets for the Street Theatre on Sunday. It is simply the best of what we all as a community represent. It is the sum of all our efforts. Go raibh maith agaibh.
Thank you to the wonderful artists and participants from home and further afield who went on stage and provided us with heart stopping moments. To the generous audiences throughout the peninsula who put their faith in us and got out and attended events in halls, hills and hidden locations to their full capacity. To those who find fault with us – come and walk in our shoes for part of the journey and see the efforts that people make to produce Féile na Bealtaine. We welcome constructive criticism, but ignore the bitter word.

A Blooming Good Way to Welcome Summer

There is an old saying, “as welcome as the flowers of May,” and after months of wind, rain, and grey skies, we know exactly what that means. The sudden burst of blossom in the hedgerows feels almost medicinal. May has always belonged to flowers. In Irish tradition, Bealtaine marked the beginning of summer, when flowers were gathered for doors, windows, wells and thresholds — not simply as decoration, but as welcome, protection and a sign that the bright half of the year had arrived. Many of us also remember the May altar: jam jars of flowers, a candle, a holy picture or statue, and at least one child being told not to touch a thing. This year, May also arrived with the Flower Moon, the traditional name for the full moon of May, when blossoms are abundant across the northern hemisphere. What a beautiful way to begin the Summer season.
Edible flowers are not a new restaurant trend, though you would be forgiven for thinking they were invented by a master chef with tweezers and a serious expression. In reality and for centuries, they have been brewed, infused, sugared and scattered into food for flavour, fragrance, colour and care.
Perhaps their greatest gift is to remind us that food does not only have to fuel us. It can delight us, tempt a tired appetite and make a simple meal feel tended to. There is a reason we bring flowers to people who are unwell: they say, I am thinking of you; here is a delight to cheer you up. Edible flowers bring a little of that same care to the plate. Many also contain the kinds of plant compounds we value in herbs, fruits and vegetables — flavonoids, pigments, aromatic oils and gentle bitters. We don’t need to turn every petal into a health claim, but beauty, colour and fragrance are part of nourishment too.
So what is blooming now?
Chive flowers are one of the easiest edible flowers to use. Their purple pom-poms have a gentle onion flavour and are lovely pulled apart over salads, soups, omelettes, potato salad, soft cheese, scrambled eggs and roasted vegetables. Chives belong to the allium family, along with onions, garlic and leeks, bringing savoury depth without taking over the dish.
Wild garlic and three-cornered leek both bring that fresh spring allium flavour too — somewhere between onion, garlic and a little green roguery. Wild garlic flowers are white and starry; three-cornered leek has white bell-like flowers and can be invasive, so harvesting it is no bad thing if you identify it correctly. Scatter either over risotto, eggs, soups, fish, beans, salads or warm potatoes.
Primroses are delicate rather than strongly flavoured, but they bring oldfashioned tenderness to food. A few on a lemon cake, fruit salad, yoghurt or spring dessert can make something simple look cared for. They can also be frozen into ice cubes for a summery cocktail that makes you smile. Hawthorn blossom is hugely connected to May. From the fairy tree, the boundary tree, the May tree, and one of the most folklore-rich plants in Ireland. Its flowers and leaves have also been traditionally associated with the heart and nervous system. In the kitchen, use the blossoms lightly and respectfully: a few in tea, cordial or infused honey. Do not strip the tree. Leave plenty for bees, berries and the wee folk (you have been warned). Dandelion flowers are the golden rebels of the lawn. The petals can be used in fritters, vinegars, syrups, salads and teas. Dandelion has a long history in herbal traditions, especially for digestion and liver support, though the leaves and roots are more commonly used than the flowers. Bramble flowers, gorse and daisies are quieter kitchen flowers, but all have
their place. Bramble flowers are lovely in teas or as a soft garnish. Gorse brings a coconut-vanilla scent to syrups, vinegars and jellies, though picking it may involve language unsuitable for delicate ears. Daisies are mild, more charm than flavour, but they make food smile back at you. Elderflower is just around the corner, depending on the hedgerows. Once it appears, summer has properly opened the door. Elderflower cordial, vinegar, tea, fritters, jellies and kombucha flavourings are all beautiful ways to use it. Herb flowers are useful too: thyme, rosemary, sage, mint, fennel, dill, basil and coriander flowers often carry a softer version of the parent herb and are perfect for finishing salads, soups and vegetables. One of the easiest ways to bring May flowers to the table is a blossom butter. Stir chopped chives, chive flowers, wild garlic flowers, lemon zest, black pepper and sea salt through softened unsalted butter, adding a few primrose petals, thyme flowers or daisy petals for colour. Roll into a sausage shape, wrap in parchment paper and chill. To serve, melt over baby potatoes, asparagus, eggs, fish, roasted carrots or warm soda bread. It makes a simple meal feel quietly special and well-deserved.
For a gentle May tisane, steep a few hawthorn blossoms, bramble flowers and a sprig of mint or lemon balm in hot water for five to ten minutes, then strain and sip slowly. Or simply finish a salad, soup, omelette or potato dish with a few edible flowers — lightly, like punctuation. We are aiming for a sprinkling of May magic, not “ the florist fell into the dinner.”
A note of caution before we all skip romantically into the hedgerows with baskets and notions: only eat flowers you can identify with complete confidence. Avoid florist flowers, garden-centre plants, roadsides, sprayed gardens and places visited enthusiastically by dogs. Wash gently, use fresh blooms, and introduce them in small amounts, especially if you have allergies. Not every flower is edible; some are poisonous. When in doubt, admire it — don’t eat it.
May flowers are welcome because they arrive just when we need them. When we bring them to the table, even in the smallest way, we are doing more than decorating dinner. We are eating in season, paying attention and letting food become a little more nutritious, beautiful and alive. After the winter we have had, surely that is as welcome as the flowers of May. Young Man Drowned In Dunquin
-Kerry News, 11 July 1902
News has reached this paper today concerning a sad drowning accident by which a young man named Patrick Fenton, Carhoo, Dunquin, lost his life.
He, along with some others, was engaged in transporting sheep by canoe, from the Blasket Islands to a place on the mainland named Fileliadh.
Having completed the task young Fenton and another young man named Mitchell, began the short journey from Fileliadh to where the canoe was normally kept. During the passage the canoe ran up on a rock and Patrick Fenton was thrown into the sea. According to the details in our report from the area, he failed to surface again. His body has been recovered.
Constable Charged With Drunkenness

It was only to be expected that Constable John Shannon would be transferred from Listowel following the result of the recent Constabulary Inquiry at Listowel, in which, as our readers are aware, he was charged with drunkenness, a charge which his Inspector General saw fit to dismiss.
Constable Shannon, during his sixteen years of service to the community and district of Listowel, at all times proved himself a courteous and efficient officer, his manner winning lots of friends for him everywhere. He will take up duty in Sneem following his transfer.
Curious Accident On The Dingle Railway
Kerry News 09 August 1895
On Tuesday morning, at about half past one o’clock, a curious accident occurred on the railway line near Derrymore. A special night train was being run from Dingle, conveying the engine and traps used at Hills fancy fair, which has been in Dingle for some time past. In one of the waggons was an engine and attached to the top of it was a flange, (protruding rim).
Near Derrymore, the flange got entangled in the overhead telephone wire and broke it. The train was travelling fast at the time, and one of the earthenware insulators, to which the telephone wire was attached, broke free of the telephone line and struck Mr. Heard, the Permanent Way Inspector, on the head. He was standing on the footplate of the engine when the accident happened and suffered a deep cut to the top of his head.
A Pig In A Bag

There is a story doing the rounds of Tralee at present about ‘a pig in a bag’ which we expect to be seriously investigated by the authorities. The pervasive Constable Brennan, always on the alert for thieves, discovered that two young men from the town had been observed with a ‘pig in a bag’, on Wednesday evening in the lower end of the town.
A diligent search started following the discovery of the carcase of the pig on the premises of a Tralee butcher. The latter admitted having purchased the pig from the two young men referred to, they having declared it belonged to themselves and had died after being choked. Constable Brennan continued his investigations.
The result of these was that he discovered the dead pig had been found near Blennerville, having been washed in on the tide. The pig’s intestines have been recovered, and steps will be taken to ascertain if it had been suffering from or died from any disease. The importance of having the matter thoroughly investigated is in the public interest.

Dingle Petty Sessions
-Kerry Evening Post – 01 October 1902
At Dingle Petty Sessions Head Constable Duff charged Mr. Thomas Lynch, publican, John Street, Dingle, with a breach of the Sunday Closing Act, by having three men in his licensed premises on Sunday. The police gave evidence to the effect of having found the men in the publican’s kitchen at 9p.m. on the day in question.
For their defence, the three respectable young men, who were found on the premises, deposed that they had invited the publican’s sister to come on a boating trip, earlier on the day, and she had accepted, along with Miss Murphy. They said they were boating around the harbour until around 6 p.m. On returning,
and at the invitation of the publican’s sister, the publican personally invited them into his house.
The men said they had a drink there, for which they did not pay, neither were they asked to pay for the drinks. The Bench, believing the invitation, on this occasion, to be bona fide, dismissed all the charges against the publican.
Weather Lore

There is no doubt that weather lore, as it was known to our fathers, is fast fading away. Still, for many people it has attractions, and there are few things more interesting than a collection of the old sayings that people believed in for generations.
Thunder on a Sunday was believed, by the weather-wise, to be the sign of a death of a great man; thunder on a Monday was a sign of the death of a woman; on Tuesday , if in early summer, it foretells an abundance of grain; on Wednesday it means there’s a threat of warfare; on a Thursday the farmer can expect and abundance of sheep and corn; on a Friday some great man will be murdered; on a Saturday there will be a widespread pestilence and great mortality.
Friday’s weather shows what may be expected on the following Sunday; that is, if it rains at noon on Friday, then it will rain on Sunday, but if Friday be clear, then Sunday will be fine also. The twelve days immediately following Christmas denote the weather for the next twelve months, one day for each month. The day of the month that the first snowstorm appears indicates the number of snowstorms the winter will bring. For example, if the first snowstorm occurs on November 29, look out then for 29 snowstorms.
A gale of wind moderating before sunset will increase before midnight, but if it moderates after midnight the weather will improve.

It might seem strange cooking lettuce but you will find this on some classical French recipes. You want to use crisp lettuce and try to cut it so you are cutting through the heart of lettuce. It is only added to the end of the dish so it is really only warmed up. This dish is such a light dish and is perfect for summer cooking.
Ingredients
for the poaching liquid
150g of chopped fennel/celery & leek
200ml of white wine
1 tbs. of lemon zest
1 tbsp. of fennel seeds
1 tbsp. of coriander seeds
1 tbsp. of ground black pepper
1 star anise
700 ml of water
Salt and Pepper for the pea and baby gem and pea cream knob of butter
150ml of milk
2 shallots finely diced
600g cod cut into 4 pieces and skin removed
500g peas
2 baby gem lettuce cut into 4 pieces
1 tbsp. of crème fraiche
salt and white pepper
small bunch of chives finely chopped
Method
In a wide shallow pot add all of the ingredients for the liquid in a pot. Bring this to the boil and then simmer for about 15 minutes. Turn the heat down and gently place the fish into the liquid. Cover with parchment and keep it to a very gentle simmer.
Meanwhile put another pot on over medium to low heat and add a little butter and add the shallots and add a pinch of salt. Cook this for about 5 minutes, add the milk then add the peas and cook this for about 2-3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon remove half of the pea and shallot mixture from the pot and put it in a blender. Add a some of the milk to the blender and the crème fraiche.
Blend this to a to fine puree, season with salt and pepper. At this stage, the fish should be cooked. Turn it off the heat and leave it for a few minutes until you finish off the rest of the dish. Take the pot with the peas in it, add a little butter and the baby gem lettuce. Cook this over a medium heat for about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

As part of Féile na Bealtaine, Christy MacGearailt organised a céilí to celebrate na Gaeil. We had mighty craic. This provided an opportunity for those who don’t have much experience in set dancing to try it. We are immensely grateful to Méabh Ní Bheaglaioch, Nicole Ní Dhubhshláine, Kyle MacCauley agus Aisling Ní Chléirigh for their lively, vibrant music. We also had a special guest on the night; Sadhbh Nic Ghloinn, who eraptured the audience with her song and fiddle playing. This was Sadhbh’s first gig, and we’re sure she will be back on stage very soon. There is obviously an immense talent in the next generation of Corca Dhuibhne.

Thanks to Féile na Bealtaine, the summer has begun, and so has our summer programme. During the summer, Dúchas an Daingin and Tobar Dhuibhne will be working together to organise fortnightly events. This will give us all an opportunity to meet new people and try new things. On the 23rd of May, we will be meeting early in the morning to hear the birdsong. This will begin at 4.30am, so that we can hear the birds awaken with the sunrise. We will have an expert who can identify the birds and share a piece of folklore about them. Dog Fouling The Target Of New County Council Campaign
The scourge of dog fouling in public places and the responsibility of dog owners to clean up after their pets is the focus of a new enforcement effort and social media campaign from Kerry County Council during the month of May.
Over the coming weeks, there will be a coordinated and targeted campaign by Enforcement Officers and Litter Wardens to patrol problem areas and public amenities in order to highlight the issue, to advise and caution dog owners, and issue fines where appropriate.
The local authority is reminding all dog owners that on-the-spot fines can be issued when owners do not clean up after their pets. Failing to clean up after your dog in a public place is an offence under the Litter Pollution Act and offenders face a fine of €150 which, if unpaid, can lead to a maximum fine of €4,000.
Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael Foley, appealed to all dog owners to play their part:
“Kerry County Council works closely with community and voluntary organisations like Tidy Towns committees across the county to keep our public areas clean and tidy and is appealing to dog owners to support that effort.
“Dog foul continues to be a scourge in Kerry, a county which maintains and promotes a clean and pristine landscape for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Dog foul can be particularly unpleasant for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users so it is imperative that owners clean up after their pets. Bag it and bin it is the message.”

Coming to terms with ADHD
‘I used to struggle daily with crippling shame and self-doubt. I felt useless, like I was taking up space in the world’, - Siún Creedon.
In June 2000, Siún Creedon was excited and relieved that her secondary school days in Dingle were over. She couldn’t have been happier because her time there was not a happy one. Year after year she felt incapable of learning and believed she was stupid. She struggled constantly academically and failed tests on a regular basis. Some teachers called her out for not paying attention. Every time that happened, she shrank a little inside. Anxiety and humiliation became her constant companions and those feelings lasted for decades.
She found it almost impossible to do the simple everyday things that others seemed to take for granted. She didn’t know it then but during those decades she had a neurobiological difference from other people - Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. She learned that she wasn’t alone, that hundreds of millions of people around the world have ADHD. She said she will never forget the moment she received the diagnosis. “The best way I can describe it is that everything fell apart and came together at once. It was shocking but, at the same time, very welcome news”.
At 35, her life finally began to make sense to her. There was nothing wrong with her – there never was. Following a diagnosis, she focussed on learning as much as she could about ADHD. At around the same time she began working with a life coach. It gave her structure, accountability at a time when she had none. When she learned about ADHD coaching, she knew she wanted to make a difference. She knew that by supporting others they could find the same clarity and self-belief that changed her own life. She trained with ADDCA, an internationally coach training programme.
It took her years to understand that self-acceptance wasn’t something she had to learn. As the psychiatrist William Dodson says; “The hardest thing about having ADHD is how it makes you feel about yourself”. People dealing with ADHD are sometimes told by friends or others that they should toughen up or not be so sensitive. That may be well meaning advice, but what people don’t understand or realise is that people with ADHD are hypersensitive to how other people speak to them, to what they say, to the point where it can feel unbearable.
ADHD coaching is not therapy, nor is it advice-giving. It is a neuro-affirming structured partnership that supports clients in how to work with their brain, not against it. The coaching process creates a rare space for people to talk openly about their ADHD and design strategies that work with their strengths and interests. “What I love about this work is seeing my clients progress. One client, on her first session said she wanted to be able to like herself. She cried and said she didn’t think that would ever be possible. I told her I believed in her and that I would hold that belief until she was ready to see it for herself.
And of course, eventually she did believe in it. Believing in clients is paramount to being a coach. Believing in people with ADHD is something we can all do.
It is life changing”.
Siún is an ADHD coach based in Prague, Czechia. She also gives talks on ADHD to parents and students at the International School in Prague. Along with her ADHD coaching, she is currently working on completing her master’s degree on the subject.
She was recently selected to deliver a talk on ADHD for TEDx which is an international community that operates TED Talks style events worldwide, celebrating locally driven ideas. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

In this book, the reader meets Liam’s great-grandparents – William Kennedy, a sailor, and Norry Grady, a seamstress – against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Ireland, a time of great social and political upheaval. While William joined the Royal Navy in 1854, embarking on a decade-long service that took him across the globe, Norry Grady emerged from the hardships of the Famine to become a domestic servant in Trabolgan House, where her skills as a seamstress did not go unnoticed.
The couple married in 1859, posting in coastguard stations across Ireland and England. They eventually settled in Dingle, where Liam O’Connor would be born nearly one hundred years later.

Since his retirement from teaching in 2015, Liam O’Connor has immersed himself in his family’s history, piecing it together through the sourcing and researching of extant records, newspaper archives, local history books and articles as well as DNA testing and analysis. The result is The Sailor and the Seamstress, his first book.
Born and raised in Dingle, Liam is a selector for Dingle GAA. After many years teaching in Dublin, he moved his career to his wife’s home parish of Aghada, Co Cork, where he has lived ever since. As a remarkable full circle moment, Aghada is also the birthplace of Liam’s great-grandfather William, whom this book is about.

The following is the obituary piece for the late Patsy Fenton which was which was written by her son John and published in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Alumni Circular.
Sweet sorrow, a sad celebration. Woven into the tapestry of this town. One of the last great veterans of Green Street, one of the few local nonagenarians.
Born and married in Dublin, reared in Kerry. Educated in Dingle Presentation, Mount Anville and the College of Surgeons (no Royal for the Republican). KERRY CAMINO
Around 250 walkers enjoyed The Camino Walk along Sli Corca Dhuibhne, the scenic Dingle Way from Tralee to Dingle over the weekend. It was a fantastic weekend with great company and plenty of good food and entertainment in pubs and restaurants.

anniversary this year. Over the coming months, the Church Community will mark this significant milestone with a series of special events and celebrations. Down through the years, many men and women from our parish have answered the call to religious life, dedicating themselves to God, and the service of others. As part of our bicentenary celebrations, we would like to honour and remember these individuals, whose vocation was nurtured in St. Mary’s.

On Saturday, fourteen boys and girls from Aughacasla National School received their First Communion at St. Mary’s Church, Camp. Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill PP officiated, and the First Communicants actively participated in the ceremony. A large congregation of family and friends was in attendance. The lovely musical accompaniment was provided by Josephine Raftery, Katie Raftery and Pat Finn.
