New Book by John O’Connor

DINGLE DAYS

Eggs and Rashers, Hay and Oats

DINGLE DAYS is a follow-up to John’s Children of the Shore (2020) which deals with growing up during poor times in Dingle in the 1950s and 1960s. This new book moves on from the challenging times of the middle decades of the 20th century and gives a view of the town after the film Ryan’s Daughter (1969) kickstarted a tourism boom and set it on a trajectory which transformed the town into a tourist mecca and changed its identity.

This work is strikingly in contrast with the Dingle described in Children of the Shore. Included are appendices relating to the businesses, activities and achievements of Dingle people. DINGLE DAYS will be available in Dingle book shops/outlets from Saturday August 9th.

Time to Give Tummy Bugs a Holiday!

News of recent listeria outbreaks in Ireland has put food safety back in the spotlight—just as many of us are preparing for Summer getaways, picnics and festivals. While listeria is less common than some other foodborne bugs, it can be especially serious for pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immunity. It serves as a sobering reminder that tummy bugs aren’t just a Winter affliction—they can strike at any time, disrupting plans and putting health at risk.

Although gastroenteritis—commonly known as a tummy bug—is often associated with the Winter months, it's become something of an all-yearround nuisance. Viruses like norovirus (often dubbed the “Winter vomiting bug”) and rotavirus (more common in children) now circulate in every season. Bacteria such as E. coli, salmonella and listeria, as well as parasites like giardia or cryptosporidium, can also be culprits, particularly in warm weather or when food hygiene slips during travel, barbecues or dining out.

The symptoms—nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, weakness and sometimes fever—can vary in severity but often come on suddenly. Most viral tummy bugs resolve within 24–48 hours, but bacterial or parasitic infections can linger for a week or more. While unpleasant for most, they can be dangerous for infants, elderly people or anyone with reduced immunity and medical advice should always be sought in such cases.

Prevention Is the Best Medicine

Fortunately, many tummy bugs can be avoided with good hygiene, safe food handling and a little common sense, especially during the holiday season. Here’s how to lower your risk:

• Wash hands regularly, especially after using the toilet, changing nappies, and before handling food.

• Scrub under fingernails, especially after gardening or outdoor activities.

• Take extra care when abroad—different food hygiene standards and unfamiliar microbes can catch us off guard. Use bottled or boiled water in high-risk destinations.

• Take a good-quality probiotic for a couple of weeks before and during your trip to help strengthen your gut defences. This is particularly helpful for children or anyone prone to tummy troubles.

• Keep picnic and travel foods cool and avoid bringing perishable items like mayo-based salads or soft cheeses unless you have adequate refrigeration. In the case of listeria, these are some of the highestrisk foods.

In the kitchen, cross-contamination is a common cause of infection. Always use separate chopping boards and utensils for raw meat, fish, and readyto-eat foods. Wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly. Frozen and chilled items should be the last things into your shopping basket and the first to go into the fridge or freezer once you are home.

What to Do if You Get Sick

If a tummy bug strikes, the number one priority is hydration. Vomiting and diarrhoea can quickly lead to fluid loss, especially in children and older adults. Sip small amounts of water, coconut water, or rehydration solutions often—even if vomiting continues. Signs of dehydration include dry mouth, little or no urination, weakness, dizziness, and lack of tears or sweat.

Don’t be too quick to suppress vomiting or diarrhoea; these are your body’s way of flushing out the invaders. But if symptoms persist longer than two

days, worsen, or are accompanied by high fever, seek medical help.

When you’re ready to eat again, ease back in with simple, nourishing foods:

• Bone broth, vegetable broth, or stewed apple

• Plain white rice or mashed sweet potato

• Soft-cooked carrots, squash, or peeled courgettes

• A little grated ginger or pinch of sea salt can help restore balance

Avoid for a few days: dairy, caffeine, alcohol, fried or fatty foods, citrus, spicy meals and rich sauces. These can irritate your already sensitive digestive tract.

Speeding Up Recovery

After a bout of illness, your gut lining may be inflamed and your gut microbiome depleted. Supporting both can help you recover more quickly and avoid repeat infections.

• Chamomile tea soothes nausea and digestive upset.

• Slippery elm powder and aloe vera juice are healing to inflamed gut tissue.

• L-glutamine powder (5–10g daily for adults) helps repair the intestinal lining.

• Ginger eases cramps and bloating; garlic offers antimicrobial support.

• Activated charcoal, taken short term and away from medications, can help clear toxins from the gut during acute infection.

• Once you're eating normally again, reintroduce probiotics through supplements or live fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir (dairyfree options available), or kombucha.

To help restore vitality, a liquid or powdered multivitamin and mineral tonic may be useful—especially after persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, or loss of appetite.

A Note on Listeria

Unlike many bugs that cause gastroenteritis, Listeria monocytogenes is not easily destroyed by refrigeration and can continue to grow at cold temperatures. It is especially dangerous for pregnant women, where it can lead to miscarriage or serious complications. People over 65 and those with weakened immune systems are also at increased risk. Avoid soft cheeses made from unpasteurised milk, cold cuts, pâté and pre-prepared deli salads, which may pose a risk if not handled or stored correctly. These foods should be avoided or consumed with caution by those in high-risk groups, particularly if not freshly made.

Your digestive system is one of your best allies when it comes to staying well—so give it a little love, whether you're relaxing at home or heading off on holiday. Eating a rainbow of wholefoods, staying hydrated and topping up with fermented favourites like sauerkraut, kombucha or a probiotic can keep your gut in good spirits. With a bit of care and a dash of know-how, you’ll be ready to enjoy your time away—while the tummy bugs stay home for a change.

Householders Threatened in Dunurlin Parish

-Kerry Evening Post 04 December 1833

Nightly meetings are held in the Parish of Dunurlin for the intention of giving total resistance to the collection of rents. The result of these meetings has been that an emissary has been sent round to intimidate the peasantry who have yet taken no active part in these illegal proceedings. This well-known emissary has called at several houses and threatened to dispossess the tenants, declaring that he had the authority to do so. When an inquiry was made at the house where these meetings were being held the inmates did not deny it.

They turned on the persons who made the enquiries and then they assaulted and seriously wounded them. The Constabulary force amounts to no more than five or six men and having no military aid they are quite helpless to preserve the peace in that area west of Dingle.

(Who did the emissary represent?)

Three Men Missing Off Brandon

-Belfast newsletter 17 February 1934

Three men left Brandon Pier, County Kerry, in a canoe at 10.30 a.m. yesterday to gather seaweed for use as fertiliser. Shortly after midday the canoe was found floating in Brandon Bay with no one on board. Great anxiety is felt for the missing men. Civic guards and civilians were searching for them throughout the day and last night.

The men, who are married, are Michael Prendergast, aged 28, Eugene Deady, aged 25 and Patrick Kennedy, aged 20.

(By writing ‘who are married’ the paper left a faint hope of survival.)

Shipwreck in Dunquin

-Star (London) 21 March 1822

A brig, apparently of North of England build, was driven on shore on Sunday at Dunquin, near Dingle, and taken possession of by the Preventive Water Guard. (The PVG was changed to Coast Guard in 1824). She is carrying a cargo of American timber and there was no person on board when she came to shore.

Up to now there is no positive information on her name or her home port. However, near the windlass there is marked the name ‘Sunderland’. The part of her stern where the name is usually painted has been smashed to pieces.

The ship is now in the charge of a Dingle Surveyor and when the weather improves it is probable that most of the timber will be saved. (The windlass – is used mainly for raising and lowering the anchor.)

Oldest Christian Structure

-Exeter and Plymouth Gazette 26 October 1906

The oldest Christian structure in Ireland is a remarkable building, evidently very ancient, but wonderfully well preserved, at Dingle, in County Kerry. It is known as the Oratory of Gallerus (sic) and has stood almost uninjured for more than 1,000 years.

(The folks in Ardmore, County Waterford, would not agree with the above. They would claim that St. Declan arrived in Ardmore in the 5th century and set up a monastery there – long before Gallarus was built.)

Attacking Livestock

-Saunder’s News Letter 05 November 1806

Five men, charged with strangling and maiming cattle, in the district of Dingle, County Kerry, were committed to the jail of that county.

Telegraph Facilities in Kerry

-Dublin Daily Express 22 February 1892

Sir Thomas Esmonde asked the Postmaster General whether the Post Office had opened a telegraph station at Ventry, County Kerry, without any guarantee being given, and if so whether the Post Office would do the same at Fenit without further delay.

Sir J, Ferguson responded – A telegraph office was opened at Ventry without any guarantee because it was estimated that the revenue would cover the expenses; however, one could not be established at Fenit without guarantee, because it was not estimated that the revenue at Fenit would cover the expenses.

Post Office for Ventry Strand

-Dublin Evening Telegraph 28 June 1893

Sir Thomas Esmonde has received a letter from the Postmaster General informing him that the Postal authorities have agreed to his proposal for the delivery of letters at Ventry Strand, County Kerry.

(Sir Thomas Esmonde represented the Irish Parliamentary Party as an MP for the constituency of West Kerry from 1892 to 1900. He was succeeded in West Kerry by Thomas O’ Donnell.)

BEACH GUIDED WALKS. Members of the public are invited to attend Free Seashore Explore Guided Walks on two of West Kerrys Blue Flag Beaches on Saturday August 9th under the leadership of a Sea Synergy Marine Biologist. Limited places are available, pre-book at info@ seasynergy.org or 087-4554034

The starting time at Inch is 9.30a.m. and the Ventry event is timed for 11.45 a.m. Kerry County Council Environment Department and the Heritage Council are the joint coordinators of these series of interesting walks.

TOWN CENTRE FIRST REPORT. The results of the Town Centre First Survey which was initiated earlier this year for Dingle Town have been issued by Kerry County Council. The Town Health Check operated by the experienced HUB Planning Company focuses on what is good and what needs to be remedied in the locations surveyed.

Rather than summarise or pass comment on some aspects of the report we recommend our readers check out the Kerry County Council website where the full report details are available. Certainly some interesting data which needs the attention of Government, Local Authorities and local groups also.

SPORT. Heartiest Congratulations to the Kerry Football team, players, panel members, mentors, support staff and travelling supporters on the recent magnificent victory to bring back the Sam Maguire Cup to the Kingdom for the 39th time. The manner in which the team played on Sunday last was also a victory for Gaelic Football as they all displayed the traditional skills of the players both individually and collectively.

And what a huge part the West Kerry contingent played this year with 8 members of CLG Daingean Ui Chúis and 3 members of An Ghaeltacht actively involved throughout the year both on and off the field of play. Comhgairdeachas libh go léir agus Ciarraí Abú!!!!. Heartiest congratulations also to Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne student and Lispole athlete Kieran Keane on his recent achievements at National and International level in the shot putt and discus. Particular mention to the acknowledgement at the FISEC GAMES in Budapest where Kieran's outstanding sportsmanship talents were identified to single him out for the individual Fair Play award a very special achievement and well deserved indeed.

ROAD SAFETY

. A recent discussion with an experienced bus driver leads me to again remind all road users to exercise extra care whether you are walking, cycling, running or driving at any time of day or night. Admittedly there is more activity on our roads at this time of year but it is quite noticeable that young drivers are travelling at excessive and dangerous speeds and this includes many local residents. We also appeal to road

users who are not in vehicles to wear high vis clothing and be more visible for a safer trip no matter how long or short your planned journey may be.

Another interesting observation of late is the lack of use of indicators at junctions and roundabouts which has resulted in some near misses, frustrated drivers, and delays with avoidable traffic buildup if more courtesy was displayed to other road users.

TREATY OF DINGLE COMMEMORATION

2025. Over 30 members of The Hispano Irish Brotherhood Group will be visiting Dingle on Sunday August 17th to participate in a programme of events to commemorate the Treaty of Dingle. The programme is scheduled to start in St James Church at 11am with a reenactment of the Treaty signing followed by a parade to the Wave Theatre for a series of lectures and talks and screening of a short film

on the Armada.

A solemn commemoration will be held at Smerwick monument from 5.30 followed by a mixed music and culture session at Wave Theatre from 7p.m. All events open to the public with full details in our next edition.

TIDY TOWNS. Work evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m.

A recent increase in the amount of litter being disposed of in our lanes and side streets a worrying trend as most contains household waste and fast food surplus. We appeal to all outlets offering accommodation to visitors especially self catering units to ensure proper waste disposal bins are supplied in advance.

Dry Stone Walling Workshops Build Community, Heritage, and Habitat in Inch

Last weekend, we laid the first stones of a new dry stone wall near the Emlagh Bridge, marking the start of our community’s three-part workshop series. This project has been made possible through funding from the Heritage Council and was carefully planned and organised by members of our Inch Community Council and Tidy Towns group, Jenny Attard and Jack O’Connor. Over two days, we worked together to begin replacing a damaged concrete fence with a traditional dry stone wall, using skills that are both old and essential. With two more workshops to come in August, we’re looking forward to continuing this journey together.

We're lucky to be learning from Dominic Keogh, a skilled and passionate dry stone waller. His experience and dedication to traditional craft are helping us build not just a wall, but knowledge we can carry into the future.

Learning dry stone walling as a community has brought us together around a shared purpose. We’re gaining a practical, handson skill that will allow us to care for and restore parts of Inch using the same methods our ancestors did. It’s a meaningful way for us to connect to our local heritage and to take ownership of how our village looks and feels—both now and in the years to come.

Laying the 1st stone

The benefits of dry stone walls go far beyond aesthetics. Unlike the concrete fence we’re replacing, our new double stone, matching the ones used in this area, will offer a rich and varied habitat for wildlife. As the stones settle and organic matter collects in the nooks and crannies, mosses, lichens, and fungi will begin to thrive. Over time, it will attract insects, snails, spiders, and birds, creating a miniature ecosystem in itself. We sourced our stone locally, the slates and sandstone match the traditional stone used throughout West Kerry.

This project marks the beginning of something special for Inch and a big step in our efforts to celebrate and preserve the hidden heritage of our village. By learning these skills together, we’re helping to restore the natural and cultural beauty of Inch—stone by stone.

Following the warm and enthusiastic response to their first public ‘Listening’ session in June, the team behind The Phoenix Dingle invites the local community to the next stage of its public consultation series: ‘Sketching’, taking place on Saturday, 16th August. Our 3pm event is now fully booked- thank you for the incredible response. So to make sure more voices can be heard, we’ve added a second session on the same day, this will take place at 4.30.

Hosted by Laura Brock (Brock McClure Planning Consultants), Andrew Clancy (Clancy Moore Architects), Mary Hickson (Creative Director & Programming Consultant) and Yvonne McGuinness (Visual Artist & Co-owner of The Phoenix), the team will present early design concepts and programmatic thoughts for The Phoenix, shaped by the ideas, stories, and aspirations shared by the community last month.

Together, they will chat through a sketch site layout and explore potential uses for the building and surrounding space. Most importantly, the session will create an open space for community feedback and ideas.

CHURCH OF IRELAND

Michael Burrows, Church of Ireland, Bishop of the Diocese of Tuam, Limerick and Killaloe made his annual visit to Kilgobbin Church, Camp and St. James Church, Dingle on Sunday, 20th July.

An accomplished organist, two years ago Bishop Burrows travelled his extensive Diocese, spanning from Sligo to Kerry. Over the course of two weeks, he played the organ, harmonium or piano in every one of the nearly one hundred churches in the Diocese. In churches where there was no available musical instrument he brought his own keyboard.

And so he played the organ in Kilgobbin Church too as well as preaching in his own signature exuberant style. He celebrated Holy Communion and met three of his future confirmands. He went onto St. James' Dingle for the second Sunday service, accompanied by his wife Claire, afterwards caife, tae agus brioscai were served in Benner's Hotel. A discussion as Gaeilge took place too. The Bishop and family later enjoyed the shops and sites around Dingle town. The Church of Ireland community looks forward to a visit again next year. Thanks to pastor Willa for the above report.

POPULAR BUSINESS CLOSES

Tralee butcher Seamus O’Sullivan announced the upcoming closure of his butcher shop on Saturday 2nd August. Seamus O’Sullivan Master Butchers based in Manor, Tralee was a popular and highly respected

establishment, known for best quality meat and dedicated service to the local community of Tralee and beyond over the last 35 years.

Seamus shared the painful decision to close his butcher shop on his facebook page expressing his gratitude and thanks to all of his customers and staff over the years.

Rising costs contribute mainly to Seamus’s decision to close at this time. The shop is a big loss to many of his regular customers throughout Tralee and Kerry who enjoyed his locally sourced excellent quality product over the years.

However they say, once an entrepreneur always an entrepreneur. Seamus is indeed a self made business man and he is not going to be idle having already started a new business in recent times.

The community are very grateful to Seamus who provided local employment and a dedicated service to them and wish him every success in his future business venture. Seamus, go n-eiri an t-adh leat.

CHRISTENING

Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill PP recently welcomed two young boys into the Christian faith. On Saturday 19th July Baby Axel Tomás Quirke received the sacrament of Baptism and on Sunday Conor Michael O Neill was also baptised at St. Mary's Church, Camp.

After the christening, Shane, Alice, family and friends enjoyed a lovely afternoon at The Junction Bar and Restaurant.

And on Sunday 20th. July Darragh and Amy were joined by family and friends at O'Neill's Railway Tavern, the family home of young Con’s grandfather Mike O’Neill and great grandfather Con O Neill. Wishing Axel Tomás Quirke and Conor Michael O Neill good health and happiness throughout their lives.

Céim Eile sa Chorn

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Ní rabhthas ag tnúth leis an mbua éasca a bhí ag UCD i bPåirc Chnocán an Iolair an tseachtain seo caite. Agus seans nach mar sin a bheadh dá mbeadh Niall Brookwell ar an bpåirc i gcaitheamh an chluiche ar fad, seachas an seacht nóiméad a d’imir sé sara díbríodh é de bharr ionsaí ar Adam Brennan a bhí, dar leis an réiteoir Robert Dowling chomh mí-dhlisteanach gurbh éigean carta dearg a thaispeáint ar an bpointe. Is minic a luaitear ‘mí-ádh’ lena leithéid de thubaist, ach is faoi na himereoirí cloí leis na rialacha imeartha, agus má theipeann orthu, ní mí-ádh é ach dul an chluiche ina n-aghaidh. Uaireanta, éiríonn le foirne teacht slán ainneoin an mhí-bhuntåiste imreoirí, ach ní mar sin a bhí ar an Aoine seo caite.

Agus ní hé gur imir lucht Thrá Lí go dona. Bhí iarracht nó dhó acu ar chúl, go háirithe sa dara leath agus díreach roimh an deireadh, ach níor chosúil ag pointe ar bith go gcealófaí an dá chúl a fuair na scoláirí sa chéad leath ó Ciaran Behan Behan agus Mikie Raggett, gan trácht ar an tríú ceann a bhain Brennan féin deich nóiméad tar éis an briseadh.

Bhain an toradh sin roinnt den sásamh a fuaireadar sa Chorn an tseachtain roimhe, nuair a chealaíodar an cúl a bhí bainte ag Baile Átha Luain go gairid i ndiaidh an bhriseadh, agus Joe Adams ag cur na liathróide san eangach tar éis sé noiméid d’am cúiteamh ghortaithe. Ó ba chluiche Coirn é, bhí Am Breise le himirt ansin, agus níorbh fhada ar siúl é go raibh cúl na bua curtha thar Lee Axworthy ag Kennedy Amechi. Bhí nach mór leath-uair a chloig eile lena imirt go fóill, ach an uair seo bhí Ciarraí go maith in ann aige, agus níor léir aon bhaol do chúl Mathyas Randriamamy go deireadh. Tá an Tríú Babhta den Chorn sroiste anois acu. Cé bheadh rompu, sa chluiche a imreofar i dTrá Lí ar an 15ú Lúnasa, ach Fánaithe Chóbh!

Faoi mar bheidis ag iarraidh díoltas a bhaint as an aon chluiche amháin

a chailleadar in aghaidh Chiarraí, i gCorn na Mumhan bliain go leith ó shin, níor ghéill muintir Chóbh cluiche ar bith le lucht na Ríochta idir sin agus seo.

Faoin am seo, cheapfá go mbeadh fonn díoltais ar lucht na Ríochta, cuma an sa tSraith nó sa Chorn an cluiche. Agus mar a deirtear go minic, is ar an oíche a bhraitheann toradh chluiche coirn, agus ní ar stair a gcumas – agus b'fhéidir gur maith sin, mar níl stair cumas Chiarraí ró-mhaith le déanaí.

Mar sin féin, bhí tráthnóna sásúil sa Ríocht agus na cairde caide ag breith Sam abhaile. Go maire siad a mbua.

Deferring your State Pension (Contributory)

We are here to suppor t you in Kerry

This means that deferring your State Pension (Contributory) can help you to:

• Qualify for State Pension (Contributory) if you didn't qualify at age 66

• Get a higher rate of State Pension (Contributory) than what you would have got at age 66

Phone us Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm on 0818 07 7860

Providing you with free and confidential information, advice and advocacy on:

• Partial Capacity Benefit (only if you came to PCB from Illness Benefit)

• Jobseeker’s Benefit

• Jobseeker's Benefit (Self-Employed)

• Back to Work Family Dividend

If you are already getting one of these payments when you defer your pension, you can continue getting it for as long as you’re entitled to it.

Q. How do I apply?

The Department of Social Protection has published a new application form for the State Pension (Contributory) (SPC1). The form asks for the date you want to start getting your pension. This can be any date between your 66th and 70th birthdays. You should apply for the State Pension (Contributory) at least 3 months, and no more than 6 months, before the date you want your pension to start.

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

You can also contact us by telephone or email:

Tralee Tel: 0818 07 7860 Email: tralee@citinfo.ie

Killarney Tel: 0818 07 7820 Email: Killarney@citinfo.ie

Caherciveen Tel: 0818 07 7780 Email: caherciveen@citinfo.ie

tralee@citinfo.ie National phone line 0818 07 4000 9am-8pm, Mon-Fri citizensinformation.ie

Funded and supported by the Citizens Information Board • SOCIAL WELFARE • HOUSING • HEALTH • EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS • FAMILY MATTERS • INCOME SUPPORT

It is important to know how many PRSI contributions you have before you choose the start date for your pension. The Department of Social Protection has a record of your contributions. You can ask for a copy of your Contribution Statement using MyWelfare. This statement includes all your PRSI contributions, including paid PRSI contributions and LongTerm Carers Contributions. You need a verified MyGovID account to use this service. Alternatively, you can telephone the PRSI records section at 0818 690690 and ask them to post you a copy of your record. If you bring your record into your local Citizens Information Centre, they will help you to interpret it.

Q. Who can defer their State Pension (Contributory)?

A. If you were born on or after 1958, you can choose to claim the State Pension (Contributory) anytime between the ages of 66 and 70.

Once you start claiming your State Pension (Contributory), you can no longer choose to defer your pension claim, even if you keep working. This is because you don’t pay PRSI once you start getting your pension.

Q. What are the current rates of deferred State Pension (Contributory)?

A. If you choose to start claiming your pension between age 67 and 70, you may be entitled to a higher rate of State Pension (Contributory). Your pension rate depends on the age you are when you start getting your pension. If you don’t qualify for the maximum rate, you may get a reduced rate.

The table below includes maximum rates based on 2025 rates of State Pension (Contributory).

There will be proportionate rates for qualified adults and children.

Q. How many PRSI contributions can I make during deferral?

During deferral, you can continue to make PRSI contributions to increase your personal rate of payment or meet the qualifying condition of 520 (10 years) contributions for State Pension (Contributory). However, you will not be able to increase your contributions past the current maximum of 2080 (40 years). It is important to know how many contributions you have before you are going to drawdown your pension.

Q. Can I get a social welfare payment during the deferral period?

If you defer claiming your State Pension (Contributory) up to the age of 70, and you meet the other qualifying conditions for the payment below, you can get:

• Illness Benefit

Courgette, Shallot, Carrot and Cheese Tart

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

We made this recently at one of our classes using beautiful, seasonal local produce, and it was a real hit. It’s simple to prepare and much lighter than your typical tart. Once baked, it looks a bit like a quiche, but the filling is firmer and more satisfying – without the fuss. This dish makes a fantastic lunch, especially when you’re making the most of what’s in season. It’s also ideal for preparing ahead of time – just pop it back into the oven for 15–20 minutes to reheat.

Serve it with a fresh side salad (more local greens, if you can!) and you’ll have a dish that even the most committed carnivore will love. It’s a great way to celebrate what’s grown and made right here.

Ingredients

For the pastry

375g flour

165g butter

pinch salt

120ml water

For the Filling

350g ricotta cheese

2 eggs

100g Irish cheddar cheese, grated pinch of nutmeg

dash of extra virgin olive oil salt and black pepper

1 large courgette, sliced lengthways using a vegetable peeler

2 carrots, sliced lengthways using a vegetable peeler

3 shallots, peeled and cut into 3 pieces lengthways

Method

For the pastry

Make the pastry by mixing flour, salt and butter, until it resembles a sandy texture. Add the water and bring it all together. Allow it to rest for 30 mins.

Grease a quiche tin with oil/butter. Roll out

the pastry and place it in the tin. Place some parchment paper over the pastry and place the baking beans on top and blind bake in the oven at 180ºC for about 15 mins. Remove the paper and baking beans and bake for a further 5 mins. Remove the tart case from the oven and allow it to cool.

For the Filling

Mix the ricotta, eggs, cheddar, nutmeg, oil and a good pinch of salt and pepper together in a bowl.

Spread the filling over the base of the tart case. Roll up each long slice of courgette

and carrot. Once you have them all rolled up, carefully place the rolled vegetables into the cheese mixture facing upwards to show off the concentric circles. Arrange them with the shallot to give a nice pattern. Turn the oven to 160ºC.

Working From Home?

Expand your social circle in Corca Dhuibhne

Grow Remote is an Irish social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live - especially applicable to us in Corca Dhuibhne. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. With more people working and wanting to work this way, there is an increasingly positive impact on rural societies. Jobs boards and more information on www.growremote.ie.

Potential downsides of working remotely include isolation, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across Ireland have local chapters with volunteer leaders setting up social events to enable locals meet-up. Aodán Ó Conaill & Liz Ryan are the Dingle Chapter leads, which is one of Ireland’s largest with circa 120 members, growing steadily every month. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events. The Dingle chapter tries to do something different each month, taking advantage of the brilliant resources here. 2025 highlights: beginners yoga, making St Bridget’s crosses at Púca café, cheering on the Six Nations Rugby in Paddy Bawn’s, Craic in Neligan’s with Irish set dancing, making pendants with Celtic Coastal Creations and a killer-pool evening in Dingle Bridge House! We love working with local organisations and businesses - especially newer and small ones & we welcome collaboration ideas, especially in the outdoor pursuits area. Also open to considering volunteer efforts locally.

If you (or someone you know) is working without the perks of a traditional workplace, or if there’s someone who is curious if remote work is for them, encourage them to come along to our next event. (Hybrid workers also welcome.) It’s informal and friendly with new faces at each gathering. Yes, it’s hard to start something new and if you’re slow to join us, know that you will be welcomed in and handled with care.

We have a Whatsapp group for the Dingle network which is the best way to connect and hear first about events. To join: scan the QR code with your camera. To see our upcoming events, search www.eventbrite.ie for ‘Grow Remote’ in ‘Dingle’.

Comhghairdeachas le Breanndán, seo seod eile don leabharlann Duibhneach, leabhar seoigh dáiríre.

`Caithfead a rá go raibh óige ana-thaitneamhach agam, mé sona sásta i mbaile a bhí i gcroílár an domhain, sléibhte is daoine mórthimpeall orainn is gan aon rian uaignis go deo orainn. Deireadh mo dhriotháireacha agus mo dhriofúracha liom go rabhas loitithe toisc go rabhas ar an leanbh ab óige, an babie mar a deiridíst, ach canathaobh ná beinn loitithe, buachaillín chomh greanta éirimiúil gealgháireach mar mé, le gruaig chatach bhán fhionn agus péarlaí na gruaige sin ag titim síos thar mo ghuailne. Ní thógfá ar mo mhuintir, n·á éinne eile ach oiread, a bheith ag tabhairt póigíní dhom agus dom chuimilt is dom thógaint ina mbaclainn na haon tseans dá bhfuaireadar.' - Breanndán

Be’m sásta as seo go Nollaig. Léirigh na buachaillí seo againne ná fuil aon bheann ar aon fhoireann acu. Bhíodar tofa ar an nDomhnach. Mar a dúirt iriseoir, Enda Mc Evoy, dá siúlódh Clifford ar ghainimh, ní fhágfadh sé aon rian. Fuair Daithí 9 phoinnte, Seán Ó Sé 6 pt, Dylan Geaney 3 pt, Gavin White 3 pt, Páid Clifford 3 pt, Sean Ó Brien 2 pt, agus Joe Ó Conchúir 1-0. Dhein Brian a chion chomh maith le éinne. Ní raibh aon duine acu le cáineadh. An- mholadh do Jeaic, ard fhear agus moladh mór tullte ag Ó Neill a chara.

Tá súil againn go mbeidh Jeaic ar an stiúir an bhliain seo chugainn. Seachtain ó shoin cheistíos Seósaimh Ó Sé fé cé leis a bheadh an lá. ‘ÁÁÁ’ ar sé, ‘Ciarraí gan dabht’. Tá fios a chúraim ag Seósaimh. N’fheadar nach é David Clifford an peileadóir is fearr a bhí riamh ann. Cad é bhí an chaid 76 uair ag Paidí. Sin braon agat. Bhí Gavin White go diail ar fad agus ní hé a haon é . Ón mbrón dtí bua éachtach. Bail ó Dia oraibh go léir.

Is trua mar a theip ar mhná Chiarraí sa pheil, bhíothas ró mhaith dhóibh, bhíodar níos mó, níos gairbhe agus iad ag tabhairt na gcosa fealltacha leo. I ndáirire bhíodar pas níos fearr.

Conas a chaill Dún na nGall? Bhí trí chontae Ultach treascartha ach bhí na meáin ag cur in íúil go raibh port na maitheasa ag na Conallaigh. Bhí na Conallaigh amuigh le slad a dhéanamh, ní thógfainn ortha é. Is baolach go raibh na Ciarraíg do-chlaoite. Is annamh a déarfainn é bhí sé le braith, go raibh bun ós cionn agus mí adh díobharta. Imreoirí slachtmara. Bhí Ciarraí ag léimeadh as a gcorp. Cad fén mbeirt Clifford, Gavin White, Joe Ó Conchúir, Seán Ó Sé, Jason Foley, Dylan Geaney, Brian Ó Beaglaoi, Seán Ó Brien- ní raibh aon chluimhin cait sean cheangailte ar aon duine acu. Iad chomh lán do cheol tréis an chluiche agus a bhíodar roimhis. Nach mór an mhíorúilt idir an gcluiche buacach seo agus duibh ré na Mí.

Tá barr feabhais ‘ge baile againn gur fada a leanfaidh sé.

Bás

Fuair Maire Greaney, na hAcraí, Abha na Scáil bás ar an 26ú Iúil. Bhí a céile Doncha básaithe roimpi. Méala mór a bás dá clann Patricia, Orla agus Seán, deirféar Agnes dearthair Máirtin, garchlann cairde agus gaolta.

Beannacht Dé lena hanam.

Fuair Elaine Dowd née Tyrell ó Inse, Abha na Scáil bás, ar an 15 ú do Iúil. Méala mó a bás dá céile Timmy, clann Michelle, Scott agus Shelly. Bhí a mac David básaithe roimpi. Méala mór a bás dá clann, dearthair Máirtín deirfiúr Jean, garchlann, gaolta agus cairde.

I bhFlaitheas na Glóire a hanam.

Fuair Rós ní Bhrosnacháin, (Curry roimh pósadh) bás in Óispís na Gaillimhe le déanaí. Bhí a céile Tomás, Ó Ghualainn, Liospóil agus a tuisti, Mícheál, agus Súsan caillte roimpi. Méala mór a bás dá clann, Mícheál, Aindrias, Olivia agus Tomasina, deirfiúracha Brid agus Maighréad, deartháir Leo, garchlann gaolta agus cáirde.

I nGairdín Pharrthais a hanam.

Eolas

Má bhíonn tú ag siúl le do chúl agus díreach ar aghaidh, n’fheadair éinne an ag teacht nó ag ineacht atá tú.

Grá a bheith agat duit féin sin tús grá saoil, arsa Oscar Wilde. Ná ceartuigh do namhaid, nuair atá sé ag déanamh dearmad.

‘B’fhearr liom a bheith marbh’, arsa Mick Jagger, ‘má tá an t-amhrán Satisfaction fós ann, agus mé daichead’.

Dá bhfágfá dúnmharaithe as an áireamh, bheadh cuma na maitheasa ar chathair Washington.

Má cheapann tú go bhfuil an ceart agat nó go gcreideann tú a mhalairt níl aon bhaol ort.

‘Measaim go rabhas an- dhall ag dul chun na hollscoile, ach dhein sé maitheas dom’, arsa Rí Charles Shasana.

‘Life is very important in America’ arsa an seanadóir Bob Dole.

Living History Weekend

The Irish-Spanish Tercio Brotherhood

Sunday, August 17th

Dingle 11am St James´ ChurchCommemoration of the Treaty of Dingle Loyalty. Legacy.

Step into the past and experience the fierce spirit of alliance that united Ireland and Spain during the 16th century! On Sunday, August 17, Dingle becomes the stage for an unforgettable living history spectacle that celebrates centuries-old bonds of courage, faith, and freedom.

From the Treaty of Dingle to the Siege of Dún an óir, history comes alive as over 30 Spanish reenactors join forces with their Irish comrades to re-create moments of resistance and brotherhood. Meet the soldiers of Tercio Irlanda and Tercio de Olivares, witness thrilling military drills, explore authentic soldiers’ camps, and immerse yourself in music, pageantry, and live displays of 16th-century life.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a unique day out, Join us at St James´s Church to honour the Treaty of Dingle and follow us to WAVE Dingle. Later that evening we will be in Smerwick to commemorate those lost at the Siege of Dún an óir. Don’t miss this rare chance to walk the path of shared heritage and stand where two nations once stood united.

Be there. Feel the legacy. Live the story.
