Mount Boucherie Community Centre A new chapter begins as improvements continue.

This summer, the Recreation & Culture staff have moved out of temporary portables and into newly renovated space inside the Mount Boucherie Community Centre! This marks a major step in converting the centre into a modern, multi-use community hub for childcare, recreation, events, and private rentals.

Key improvements Childcare & Family: New Childcare Centre, outdoor playground, renovated multipurpose rooms and banquet hall.

Facility & Services: Enhanced public reception, upgraded administration and community spaces, new kitchen, renovated washrooms, and parking lot improvements.

I have been the Aquatic Coordinator here at JBMAC for 38 years. You’ll also find me lifeguarding the pool, teaching the Swim Instructor course, teaching swimming lessons and aquafit classes. Over the years I have experienced a multitude of wonderful patrons, from babies all the way to seniors.

Swim for Life Preschool Lessons 3-5yrs

Your child may only be registered in ONE swim lesson per session. If your swimmer is registered in multiple lessons, we will contact you to select ONE class. This gives more families the opportunity to access swim lessons. Thank you!

The Swim for Life Preschool program teaches preschoolers the basics of swimming through games, songs, activities, and drills. An emphasis is placed on providing Water Smart opportunities so children can make smart decisions in and around water. This is a 5-level, play-based program.

Swim for Life Parent & Tot Lessons 4-36mths Spend quality time with your little one while you both have fun, learn, and socialize. Through structured in-water play, we stress the importance of play in developing water positive attitudes and abilities. As toddlers progress in age and development, they will be challenged with new skill sets. All levels are age-based, and parent participation is mandatory.

Parent & Tot 1/2 Combo 4-18mths

This combo level touches on all skills taught in the first two parent and tot levels. Floats, glides, and submersions are taught along with kicking and arm motions to begin to learn propulsion. Water smart skills are introduced through “Within Arms’ Reach” and “Wear a Lifejacket” messages.

Swim for Life Swimmer Lessons 6-13yrs This is a challenging 9-level program for school-aged children. Three swimming strokes and three rescue kicks are taught. Fitness is used to build endurance and promote individual success. Water safety skills are integrated into the lessons throughout the session.

As per the Lifesaving Society’s recommendations, Swimmers 3-6 will now be 45-minute classes. This will allow for additional time to work on technique and endurance while still allowing time for water safety skills.

Looking for a fun, active, and educational way to supplement your homeschool curriculum? Join our Home-School swimming lessons, specifically scheduled during the school day to meet the needs of homeschool families. Classes will be structured in a combination of level groups, ensuring that students are both challenged and supported based on their individual abilities, while allowing families the benefits of completing lessons for multiple children within a 2-hour period.

Lesson Information: For an enjoyable and safe experience, we recommend wearing warm attire that won’t stick to the ice or get wet.

For a fun and safe experience, full hockey equipment is recommended, with the minimum requirements being; hockey specific skates, helmet with full cage/shield, hockey gloves, elbow and shin pads. This program is for children that are not registered in minor hockey.

Hockey skates and helmets are available to borrow during class, free of charge.

Skating-Preschool Level 1 & 2 3-5yrs Level 1 is for children with very little or no experience on the ice. Let our instructor show you how much fun you can have learning to skate, while building confidence and becoming more comfortable on the ice. The little skaters will stand unassisted, balance, fall safely, stand back up and take their first steps.

This league is delivered in collaboration with the Kelowna Ultimate Players Society (KUPS) to help grow year-round ultimate opportunities across the Okanagan. Played on indoor turf with two fields running simultaneously, the league features a 5 vs 5 mixed format with a continuous play style and subs on the fly to keep games fast-paced, fun, and high-energy.

Pickleball Learn to Play & Skill Development 19yrs +

In Level 1 you will learn the basic strokes, rules of the game and scoring. Find out why this is the fastest growing sport in North America and so much fun for all ages. Come learn with Roberta, a 5.0 tournament player, who will get you started on your pickleball journey.

Level 2 Novice builds on the concepts learned in Level 1 to include volleys and third shot drops. The focus will be on skill development and learning doubles strategies.

Adult Co-Ed Soccer League 17yrs + The City of West Kelowna is pleased to offer and indoor, co-ed, recreational soccer league. Here are some new guidelines for the upcoming season: • Teams may carry up to 25 players: a maximum of 19 males/ females and a minimum of 6 males/females per team.

• The open division permits any players 17yrs +, players turning 17 during the season are eligible.

• The 35yrs + division permit only players born 1991 or before. Players turning 35 during the season are eligible.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years.

• Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland.

• Funding goes to individuals, not to teams.

• Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year.

• Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify.

• Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children.

• Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis.

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, BGC Okanagan, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

• Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the Jumpstart program.

KidSport™ is a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages 18 and under. There are over 30 community chapters in BC and over 235 chapters across Canada. KidSport™ works to eliminate the financial barriers to sport participation, so all kids can play. In March 2011 the West Kelowna KidSport™ Chapter began awarding groups to help children and youth participate in sport programs.

Canadian Sport School – Kelowna (Css Kelowna)

Canadian Sport School Kelowna (CSS Kelowna) offers a half-day program where student-athletes spend part of their day completing required academic courses at their regular high school, and the other half participating in specialized training with the Canadian Sport School. This program provides student-athletes in Grades 10-12 and occasional Grade 9 the opportunity to earn academic credit during school hours for: • Physical Training through the IGNITETM Athlete Development Program – Developing athleticism and new skills in areas such as strength training, sprint training, and basic gymnastics movements.

• Independent Study Blocks – Dedicated time for homework completion, quiet study, or online learning.

• Sport Performance Seminars – Weekly sessions focused on high-performance topics that support athletic knowledge and long-term development.

CSS Kelowna fosters a high-performance training environment among motivated student-athletes, while offering support, coordination, and advocacy between athletes, their high school teachers, and their sport coaches.

Westside Learning Lab The Westside Learning Lab is a unique library space focused on hands-on learning, creativity, and technology.

Programs support learning in areas such as STEM, digital literacy, and creative technologies. In addition to its learning spaces, patrons can return library materials and pick up holds at the Learning Lab. Come on in and cook up a storm! Kid Food Nation is a national initiative that helps kids and families develop food skills through hands-on experiences related to planning, preparing, and cooking. Life Skills Training

Reconnect program provides short-term services to youth including parent/teen mediation, advocacy for youth that are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, alcohol and drug referrals, one-on-one support, hygiene and contraceptive education and products. If you have been inside our Club, you’ve seen how creative and incredibly talented West Kelowna youth are. Their art is displayed with pride throughout our Centre. We are always offering opportunities for youth to engage in creative activities such as tie-dye, painting, crafts, and more.

To help youth become healthy, successful, and contributing members of society, we offer many life skills training opportunities for youth. This includes volunteer and leadership opportunities, employment, and education support.

Creative Arts

Resilience is more than just an individual’s ability to cope—it also depends on access to supportive environments. The R2 Approach highlights 52 resilience factors, divided into rugged qualities (internal traits like confidence and attitude) and resources (external supports like healthcare or community). Both are essential: inner strength alone isn’t enough without supportive environments. This approach recognizes the shared responsibility of families, schools, and communities in fostering resilience. Our programs use the R2 Approach to help youth strengthen their internal skills and connect with the resources they need to thrive, especially during times of stress or adversity.

Want to make a difference? If you have a special talent or simply want to make a difference in a child’s life, contact the BGC Okanagan to be a volunteer. We need: youth and children’s mentors, program volunteers and special needs assistants.

Fall Family Fun! Enjoy the last few weeks of the season with a game of beach volleyball at Pritchard Park (Pritchard Dr), Willow Beach (Gellatly Rd) or Pebble Beach (Whitworth Rd).

Have a fall picnic at one of our parks – for a covered picnic shelter, visit Kinsmen Park on Shannon Lake Road or Marina Park and Powers Point Park on Gellatly Road.

Nut Harvest

Stroll through Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park (off Whitworth Road) and harvest some nuts! Although the park is open year round dawn to dusk, the nut harvest takes place Sep. to mid Nov. The harvest is managed by the Gellatly Nut Farm Society and 100% of the proceeds are used for improvements and restoration projects within the park. Visit www.rdco.com.

One of the best places to pick fruit and vegetables in BC, West Kelowna has lots of local fruit orchards and farms.

Plum picking season is from Aug-Sep, Pears from late Aug-Sep and Apples in October. There are also u-pick pumpkins and gourds ready in the fall season! Visit the Westside Farm Loop to explore a few that offer a pickyour-own experience or visit a farm market to buy some that has already been freshly picked.
