My trip to Japan with WIC in Grade 9 was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had. Being surrounded by a completely different culture and language made me realize how much there is to learn beyond what I see every day at home. From observing how respectful and organized daily life was to trying new foods and navigating busy streets, every moment taught me something new. I was especially struck by how tradition and modern life blend so naturally, which helped me appreciate the value of history while embracing change. This trip changed my perspective, made me more independent, and helped me understand the importance of being open-minded and respectful when experiencing other cultures. I would go back if I were ever given the opportunity without a second thought.

When I learned that the grade 9s were going to Japan at the start of the year, I jumped at the opportunity. Having never been to Japan, I was very eager to go and experience their incredibly unique culture and history.
Unfortunately, right off the bat, my least favourite part of a vacation began... the flight. As an active person, I found it pretty difficult to spend ten hours sitting in a small space like a plane, but at least I was next to some of my friends. I pretty much just played Super Smash Bros the entire time.
I think properly socializing with the locals was the most rewarding experience, mainly since I didn’t speak Japanese at all, so trying to learn the language while I was talking with them was fun. Going to a local Japanese grill and cooking my own food was also really interesting, especially the part where I didn’t get food poisoning, which is truly great!
The highlight of my trip was going to Universal Studios on the last full day of our trip. This allowed us to talk to, and make friends with some of the local kids our age.
Throughout the trip, I also was able to talk and hang out with people I normally don’t have the chance to at school which allowed me to strengthen a lot of friendships which is amazing.
Coming back from the trip I gained a new appreciation for Japanese culture and their traditions, as well as a deeper understanding of the perspective and way of life that Japanese people have every day.
Our trip to Japan was an amazing experience and I am sure I will keep the memory for the rest of my life.

I chose to paint this scene for our Art 20 watercolour project, where we created polaroid-style paintings representing our past, present, and future At the time, I knew I would be going on the Singapore–Malaysia trip, even though we had not left yet, so I thought it would be interesting to use a scene from the Singapore skyline to represent my “future.” When I found the reference photo, I was surprised by how modern yet calming the scene felt, which is what drew me to it.

Seeing it in person was such a cool experience because it felt like I was stepping into my own small painting on a much larger, real-world scale. It was just as colourful and beautiful as I had imagined while painting it

Travelling with WIC International Studies strengthened my interest in pursuing business after high school by allowing me to see how companies operate in different global environments In Singapore, learning about Dairy Queen’s expansion showed me how businesses adapt their products, marketing, and operations to fit different cultures and markets I also explored Singapore’s currency exchange system, which helped me better understand global economics and international trade. While in Malaysia, seeing large manufacturing and internationally connected companies demonstrated how businesses operate across borders. Besides business, visiting museums and trying different foods helped me develop a greater appreciation for cultural diversity and to understand how culture influences consumer behaviour and business decisions worldwide

When we arrived, I had no idea what to expect. Everything felt unfamiliar, from the landscape to the culture. One of our first stops was Hallgrímskirkja Church, and we also had the opportunity to walk through a cave. I absolutely loved it. As I was taking in these experiences, I thought back to a conversation I had with Ms. Joy before the trip. I had told her that I often get stressed in unfamiliar situations because I like knowing what is going to happen. However, Iceland completely changed my perspective. The trip taught me that some of the most beautiful experiences happen when you step into the unknown and allow yourself to embrace whatever comes next.
Every journey throughout the trip was memorable. We saw breathtaking waterfalls, incredible landscapes, and scenery that looked unlike anywhere I had ever been before. We stood on the bridge between continents, watched a geyser erupt, and learned about Iceland's unique geography and history. Everywhere we went seemed more beautiful than the last.
One experience that surprised me was visiting a greenhouse and eating tomato soup. Before we arrived, I honestly thought it was going to be one of the less exciting parts of the trip because there is literally no way to grow things in Iceland. Instead, it ended up being one of my favorite memories. It reminded me not to judge experiences before giving them a chance because sometimes the things you expect the least from become the highlights. Another thing that made the trip so special was the unpredictability of the weather. Every day brought something different and plans sometimes had to change because of it.

Normally, I would find that stressful, but by the end of the trip I had learned to appreciate it. The weather kept every day exciting and reminded me to stay flexible and enjoy the moment instead of focusing on what was supposed to happen.
A huge part of what made the trip so successful was our guide, Omar. He was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing his country with us. Every morning he would teach us new Icelandic words and help us understand the culture in a way that made every experience more meaningful. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he played a major role in making the trip as amazing as it was.
Of course, the places we visited were incredible, but the people I shared the experience with made it unforgettable.

The Grade 10 boys always kept things entertaining and made sure there was never a dull moment. Everyone was willing to embrace adventure, try new things, and make the most of every opportunity. Even the loud British kids staying at our hotel became part of the experience, although I definitely could have done without being woken up on nights before our 6 a.m. wake-up calls.
Looking back, this trip was about much more than visiting Iceland. It taught me to be more comfortable with uncertainty and to appreciate experiences that do not go exactly as planned. What began as a stressful day filled with lost passports and delayed flights turned into one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I came home with incredible memories, a new appreciation for stepping outside my comfort zone, and a greater understanding of both the world and myself. Most importantly, I learned that sometimes the best moments are the ones you never see coming.
