MARCH 5 for Residents

MARCH 12 for Non-Residents

As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree is 25 years ago. Doug Jackson has quietly been putting roots in the ground in his quarter century as Park Naturalist at Westmoor Park. Although trained in forestry, his influences can also be seen in the tall grass meadow, pollinator gardens, orchards and barnyard restorations.

He shares his love of all things natural with all park visitors, and possess a passionate enthusiasm for nature education. In the summer, he greets children enrolled in Westmoor’s popular Farm and Nature camp. Every week year-round, he instructs 4-H students from age 9 – 19 on proper animal husbandry, passing along his knowledge of barnyard etiquette. He also welcomes Scout groups, countless school field trips, and Audubon bird watchers – all programs he developed over the past two decades. Watch out, though: he absolutely gushes when given the opportunity to impart of knowledge about amphibians and reptiles.

One of his most significant contributions are the trees he’s planted, laying the ground work for the establishment of the Westmoor Arboretum, which now supports 140 species of trees and shrubs. In all his work, Doug circles back to the park’s main mission – to educate people. His gentle smile and quiet leadership are appreciated by everyone who knows him.

Darcy Winther

35 years

Darcy started at Westmoor Park during the summer of 1987. While in college, she also worked several winters, and then returned as a year-round, part-time employee after graduation in 1989 and never left! She has primarily served the park as a weekend facility supervisor, caring for the farm animals, hosting birthday parties and helping out with various special events. Back when she started more than 35 years ago, there were only four staff, a handful of programs and no summer camp.

Darcy has a full time week day job at the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as the Supervisor of the East District of DEEP’s Land & Water Resources Division, but her heart never strays far from Westmoor.

In her words, Westmoor Park “is a gem, [it’s] been a great way to decompress and enjoy the outdoors, animals, and kids.” Her colleagues think she’s a gem, too.

OUR PARKS

Congratulations to Darcy Winther for 35 years of service!

WESTMOOR PARK

Westmoor Park is an environmental, agricultural and horticultural education center dedicated to generating awareness and appreciation for the natural world.

The 162-acre park provides a quintessential, farm-like atmosphere complimented by high quality, hands-on learning opportunities.

The Town-owned facility is operated by the Department of Leisure Services. Our demonstration farm, wildflower meadows, perennial gardens, woodland trails, and ponds are open to the public daily. We also offer a wide variety of educational farm and nature programing for folks of all ages. NO tax dollars are used to operate Westmoor Park. Public donations to The Westmoor Park Fund are welcomed.

DISCOVERY ROOM

LET’S EXPLORE THE PARK

When exploring Westmoor Park, the trail system will bring you to unique and beautiful natural landscapes. From the tall-grass meadow – a haven for birds, pollinator insects, and small mammals – to the woodlands, to the pond and stream system, Westmoor is home to a wide variety of native flora and fauna.

DISCOVERY ROOM

Visit our home to a small collection of native and non-native reptiles, amphibians, and other critters, as well as our seasonal exhibits.

BARNYARD

Our farm is open to the public everyday from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

GARDEN

The Perennial Garden is located behind the main building and has a lovely canopy of dogwoods, crabapples and azaleas.

POLLINATOR GARDEN

Enjoy native pants which attract hummingbirds and numerous butterflies here in Connecticut.

Charles and Leila Hunter left their farm as a gift to the Town of West Hartford along with an endowment in their Last Will and Testament. In 1973, Westmoor Park’s transition from private estate to public park began.

Today, Westmoor Park is recognized as one of the premier environmental education centers in the region

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

A multi-functional outdoor classroom serves as protection from the weather and a space for children to gather.

PONDS

Our ponds provide water for many different wild animal species, such as turtles, ducks, muskrats, beaver, white-tailed deer, coyotes, bobcats, and raccoons.

MEADOWS

Native grasses and wildflowers create a habitat for many bird and small mammal species. There are other grassy meadows, nestled within our forest trails.

NATURE TRAILS

162 acres in total with three miles of woodland trails that will lead you through our pine and deciduous forests, up Indian Hill, and past our ponds, streams, and meadows.

Check out our farm, nature, and gardening programs for all ages throughout this magazine.
