This 10-year plan is equipped with action items for Council, staff, and community members which can create a more welcoming and safe community for those facing discrimination, racism, and marginalization. Community Support For our WHRM Community and Volunteer Organizations

**NEW** Barrier Free Small Business Accessibility Grant Small businesses are invited to apply for a maximum grant of $5000 (minimum of 50% cost share required from applicant) towards an exterior ramp or accessible entrance doorway system.

The grant application process opened in November and will close on February 19, 2026. On an annual basis, Council will determine the amount of funding available for grants during the budget process. Applicants will be notified of their application status after Council approval. Applications are only accepted online, please read the full policy before applying: www.westhants.ca/rec and click on “Community Grants”

Volunteer Awards

Volunteers are the heart of West Hants! Annually, we seek your nominations for deserving West Hants Volunteers to celebrate. Nominate an individual, youth, or an organizational board that makes a difference in our community. Nominations opened in November and will close on February 19, 2026. www.westhants.ca/rec and click on “Volunteer Awards”

Grants and Contributions

Council is committed to assisting registered volunteer organizations which provide beneficial programs, services or projects to our communities. Grants are generally provided in the form of funds, while contributions may be through in-kind support using municipal resources, both tied to a specific outcome. Each registered organization can apply for a maximum of two grants: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Through our free equipment loan program, you can enjoy the best of West Hants! Borrow a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore our lakes in the summer, snowshoes to adventure on trails in the winter, Nordic walking poles to walk with friends in all seasons, or some accessible equipment to take a loved one into nature. There are so many possibilities!

Offered in partnership with West Hants Trails Association 12 years + (youth 16 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult | Eldridge Road Recreation Site, 156 Eldridge Road, Falmouth Intermediate to Advanced difficulty • January 11, 10:00am Join Melissa on a beautiful, mainly single-track hike through forest, along the French Mill Brook, with a stop at Eldridge Falls. This adventure will be approximately 1.5 hours, so bring snacks/water and dress appropriately for the weather. Please note this is an intermediate to advanced hike, which is not accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, small children, or people unsteady on their feet. No washroom on site.

Hike Avondale

Offered in partnership with West Hants Trails Association 12 years + (youth 16 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult) | Avondale Community Hall, 50 Avondale Cross Rd • May 10, 10:00am Join Melissa on a 5-6 km hike, traveling through wooded trails and open farmland. Bring snacks/water and dress for the weather. The whole loop is approximately 1.5 hours. Please note that although this is a beginner-intermediate trail, it is not accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, small children, or people unsteady on their feet. A washroom is available on site. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for additional pop-up hikes throughout the winter and spring!

Free Public Swimming

Children and youth with supervising adults | Ted Canavan Athletic Centre, 63 Kings Edgehill Lane, Windsor | Free Public Swimming January 11 – March 1 | Sundays, 2:00-3:00 PM West Hants is hosting a weekly public swim at Kings Edgehill School. Lifeguards are on duty; however, safety is a shared responsibility and therefore attentive adults must always be present. Children 8 years and under require a responsible adult to be in the pool and within arm’s reach. Registration is not required, swims are limited to 60 people, including those on deck.

We are able to offer many of our free programs, such as Turf Time, Open Gym, and Free Swim with the support of the Province of Nova Scotia. We are grateful to work in partnership with the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage to develop and promote our active living resources for our Nova Scotian community.

Four Seasons Community Orchestra

Contact your local sport organization or activity club for more information on programs and registration details. All groups listed are easily found with a quick Internet search using their club name. Check the Community Resources listings for more organizations.

The Four Seasons Orchestra is a community symphony orchestra, which welcomes members from both local and from farther afield. There is no audition to join; practices held in Hantsport on Saturday mornings, 10:30am – 12:30pm. It is your responsibility to ensure you have read the program description and understand age restrictions, program start/end times, locations, and other details before registering for the program. Instant refunds are not available through the registration software. Therefore, refund requests must be received via email or phone programs@westhants.ca or 902-798-8391 ext 214 with a minimum of three days’ notice prior to the beginning of the program. All refunds will be subject to a $5 cancellation fee unless the program is cancelled by our department. All refunds are issued via cheque and sent in the mail. Please ensure your mailing address is up to date in your online account. If a refund request is not received, and you do not attend the program you are registered in, you still owe the program fee. Refunds will not be provided to individuals within three days prior to the start of the program or after the program has commenced. Invoices that are more than 30 days old will be forwarded to our Finance Department, and interest will accrue until they are paid in full.

Stay Safe Course

9-13 years | Windsor Community Centre, 78 Thomas St, Windsor • Thursday, March 19, 9:00am-12:30pm $15 WHRM | $60 Non-WHRM A half day of smart skills for growing up. Designed for ages 9–13, this course is the perfect first step before babysitting. Kids learn how to make safe choices at home, school, and in the community, how to stand up for themselves, when to call 911, and how to handle basic first aid needs like cuts, burns, and allergic reactions. It’s a great way to build independence while keeping things simple. This course is conducted by Braveheart First Aid.

18 years + | Ted Canavan Athletic Centre, 63 Kings Edgehill Lane, Windsor Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 6 – March 12 | $115 Jump into Aquafitness! These classes are fun, easy on the joints, and can be modified easily for your need. There are three class times to choose from when registering. These classes are registration-based programs, cannot mix and match class times, drop-ins cannot be accommodated. Participants can register for one of the three time slots: • Option one: 9:00-9:45am • Option two: 10:15-11:00am • Option three: 7:30-8:15pm

This program offers both seated and standing options, so you can choose what works best for you. With the use of TheraBands, participants can add their own strength components to this class and modifications will be given for all exercises.
