letter from the editors To Our WesternU CDM ASDA Family, This spring edition of our ASDA newsletter is more than just a collection of updates—it’s a celebration of the spirit, resilience, and energy that flow through our chapter. From national recognition and local outreach, to silly articles, this issue captures the heart of what makes our ASDA community so special.

Inside, you'll find highlights from major events that have shaped our 24’-25’ term, updates on advocacy efforts, mental wellness tips, tasty recipes, and staff/faculty recognition. We’re also proud to spotlight some of our amazing members and the national honors our chapter has received this year. Whether you're looking for ways to survive dental school or just want a quick escape from clinic stress, this newsletter’s got something for you.

Whether you're prepping for boards, exploring post-grad options, or simply trying to make it through a packed exam week, we hope this newsletter brings you encouragement, perspective, and a little joy. It’s also a reminder that ASDA isn’t just an organization—it’s a collective movement powered by empowered and passionate students.

As the Immediate Past WesternU Chapter Executive Team and Newsletter Editors, this edition gave us a moment to reflect on everything we’ve accomplished together. It’s been an incredible year filled with collaboration, outreach, advocacy, service, and shared growth.

We’re deeply proud of what our chapter has achieved—and even more excited to see what the newly elected ASDA Board will bring to the table!

letter from our Secretary What’s up WesternU, My name is Eboney Hinds and I have been honored to serve as your 2024–2025 ASDA Secretary. This year has been nothing short of amazing from planning events and sharing student spotlights to helping build an even stronger sense of community within our chapter. This experience has helped me grow so much, both personally and, professionally and I’m just so proud to have played a part in highlighting the passion, talent, and heart that make WesternU ASDA what it is. We’ve had such an amazing response to our newsletters this year, and while it’s bittersweet that this is our final edition, I’m so excited to share this one last sendoff.

I am incredibly proud of all that our chapter has accomplished in the spring semester alone! We hosted a wide variety of events, including our Hip Hop & Heritage event in collaboration with SNDA for Black History Month. Our new executive and general board were selected, we sent six students to represent WesternU at Lobby Day in Washington, D.C., and proudly brought home the National ASDA Member Favorite Gold Crown Award. On top of that, our chapter and individual members earned multiple national and district-level honors. We also partnered with CDM to host a Match Day Breakfast for the D4s and hosted our Spring Vendor Fair in collaboration with CDM Research Day! Serving as WesternU’s ASDA Secretary has truly been one of the greatest highlights of my dental school expierence. I am so incredibly grateful to have worked alongside Kendall, Valerie, and Kristie—three strong, inspiring, and passionate women who have taught me so much about leadership, collaboration, and dedication. I truly couldn’t have dreamed of being a part of a better executive team. Each of them brought their own light to our chapter, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of this incredible season of ASDA with them by my side.

Being part of ASDA has truly given me the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, build lasting relationships, and find a real sense of belonging in dental school. It’s provided me with countless opportunities for both personal and professional development, and it’s shown me that there really is something in ASDA for everyone. Whether your passion lies in advocacy, leadership, wellness, or simply building community you explore all that ASDA has to offer and find your thing. You just never know where it might lead you.

As this chapter closes, I’m so excited for what’s ahead. Our newly elected board is full of heart, ideas, and motivation and I just know they’re going to do amazing things and take WesternU ASDA to even greater heights!

Hey WesternU ASDA,

How y’all doinn? My name is Kristie Ngo, and I’m a D3, soon to be D4 (um - how?!), and it has been such an honor and absolute joy serving as this past year’s Chapter Treasurer.

From Lunch and Learns and wellness events, to our beloved Annual Golf Tournament, I hope at some point this year, you’ve found a moment to breathe, laugh, and connect with your peers, the dental community, or just with yourself. As we wrap up the year with our final Spring newsletter, we’re excited to continue highlighting the incredible individuals within our ASDA family and reflect on the amazing memories we’ve shared. We hope these moments continue to inspire us all to grow, show up, and strive to become the best versions of ourselves!

To the entire board: I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside such kind, talented, and driven individuals. Thank you all for riding with us and committing to our obsession with creating an unforgettable ASDA experience - we’ve had so much fun and found such success because of the unwavering effort and support of this team. National Awards & Recognitions National ASDA’s Gold Crown Winner - Member’s Choice Award The ASDA Gold Crown Member’s Choice Award is a national honor recognizing the chapter that best embodies energy, creativity, and member engagement, as voted on by ASDA members across the country. It celebrates the chapter’s ability to create meaningful programming, build community, and inspire widespread participation. Winning this award is a testament to the impact and enthusiasm of our members and the strength of our chapter culture.

National ASDA’s Fever Week Challenge Winner Our chapter was recognized as one of the 3 winners of this year’s Fever Week Challenge, in which we showcased how our chapter introduced the structure of ASDA and organized dentistry to new dental students. This award allowed us to share our ideas on a national level, so that we can help strengthen the ASDA Chapter experience.

National ASDA’s Wellness Grant Winner Our chapter was one of the five schools that won this year’s Wellness Grant, which is intended to help increase member participation at in-person wellness-related activities and programs. Our amazing Wellness team was recognized for portraying a clear vision and rationale for the use of the grant funds.

National ASDA’s Canine-Level Challenge Winner Our chapter was recognized as one of the winners of this year’s Canine-level Challenge, in which we showcased our chapter’s commitment to community service and dental outreach. In order to be of support to those affected by the tragedy from the LA fires, our chapter donated dental hygiene goodie bags and volunteered our time at a local YMCA.

The ASDA Chapter Leadership Academy was designed to help support members in their role as chapter leaders and to inform them on national ASDA expectations and requirements.

Surviving Dental School D1 PERSPECTIVE

Grace Nguyen

What surprised you the most about D1 year?

One of the things that surprised me most about my D1 year was how much my learning style and techniques varied depending on the class—and how different that was for everyone around me. The pace of dental school is so fast that you learn to adapt quickly.

I was pleasantly surprised by how manageable it is to maintain a school-life balance outside of academics.

What’s something you wish you knew before starting dental school?

Something I wish I knew before starting dental school is that it’s okay to figure things out as you go—that’s part of the process.

I’m someone who likes to plan ahead and know what’s coming, but I’ve learned that things don’t always go the way you expect (in fact, they often don’t). I’m still reminding myself that it’s okay to feel frustrated or overwhelmed sometimes, as long as I take those moments as learning opportunities and ask for help when I need it.

What are you most looking forward to going into your second year?

I’m really looking forward to building on my skills in the sim lab and becoming more confident with procedures before starting clinic in the summer of my D2 year. With that added knowledge in clinical skills and patient interaction, I’m also looking forward to volunteering more and participating in hands-on activities like patient screenings at health fairs!

Reflecting on your first year, If you could change anything, would you and why?

Honestly, I don’t think I would change anything about my D1 year. Even the tough days taught me a lot, and I’ve grown so much through the mistakes and challenges. If I had to choose one thing, I’d say I wish I had said “yes” to more opportunities I initially avoided because I was afraid they’d take time away from studying. I’m still learning how to balance school with my hobbies and social life, but I’m getting there!

Outside of school, what do you like to do for fun?

Outside of school, I love going to the gym, hanging out with friends, trying new food spots, playing pickleball, going to concerts or festivals, and—when there’s time—hiking or spending the day at the beach.

Surviving Dental School D2 PERSPECTIVE

Breanna Moreno

What advice would you give to a first year dental student who is about to face the rigor and challenges of D2 year?

Take full advantage of every sim session and stay on top of your projects. D2 year comes with more extensive and time-consuming portfolios, so being efficient during sim can really make a difference.

The more you get done during class time, the more you’ll free up your evenings to focus on studying for didactics which is helpful because the systems courses move quickly. Staying organized and managing your time well early on will set you up for success and hopefully less stress.

Was there a particular moment or experience that made you realize the impact of dental outreach on a community?

As a pre-dental student, I volunteered with Healing California, providing care to individuals experiencing homelessness. I initially looked forward to assisting chairside, but what left the biggest impression was the overwhelming gratitude from patients before even receiving any treatment. One man, in particular, hugged us and repeatedly thanked us the moment he walked in. He teared up, explaining how much pain he had been in and how grateful he was just to be seen. It was humbling to witness how much these services meant to people, many of whom had traveled far or waited all day for care. That experience reminds me that dentistry isn’t just about teeth — it’s about compassion and human connection.

Is there an area within dentistry that you have found particularly challenging or exciting in your second year, and why?

Getting ready for clinic has been both exciting and challenging. Balancing didactics, sim lab projects, exams and the SIPCE definitely tested my energy and endurance. I felt very tired at various points of D2 but the thought of finally transitioning into the clinic has been exciting and motivating.

How did you balance the demands of dental school with your commitment to community service?

Balancing the demands of dental school with community service is not always easy, but I made it a priority since D1 year because giving back to others is one of the main reasons I chose this profession.

Instead of waiting for the “perfect” time to volunteer, I learned to make time.

With our packed schedules, there will always be exams and assignments, but I’ve found that staying organized and working ahead allows me to fully enjoy the service events without feeling overwhelmed. For me, it’s all about being intentional — community service isn’t something I squeeze in, it’s something I plan for because it matters deeply to me.

What is your preference - a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush - and why?

Manual in the morning and electric at night! I like starting my day with the fresh and minty feel my manual toothbrush gives me and ending my day with the detailed cleaning from my electric toothbrush.

Surviving Dental School IDP PERSPECTIVE

Ark Safarov

What motivated you to pursue dentistry?

My journey into dentistry began with a fearful visit to the dentist at the age of six—but to my surprise, it turned out to be painless. I also remember watching my mom get her teeth treated without anesthesia, and that moment stayed with me. I decided that when I grow up, I want to become a dentist and do a better job for her. Later in school, my favorite subjects were biology and organic chemistry.

Portrait photography became a hobby of mine, and through it, I developed an eye for detail and aesthetics. My mom always supported my dream of becoming a doctor, and all of these pieces naturally connected into one path—dentistry.

Can you describe your experience so far with the exams and coursework in this accelerated didactic period of the program?

I am going through IDP bootcamp curriculum at CDM which is intense. But I took ten years to prepare for this challenge. It’s a rewarding experience—I enjoy the study curve, the pace, and how each achievement builds my confidence. Every quiz, practical, and lecture reminds me that I’m exactly where I’ve worked to be – so, no ground to complain.

What is one piece of advice you would give to other international students considering the IDP program?

Be ready before the program begins—mentally, emotionally, academically, clinically, with computer skills, and with family arrangements. The transition is tough, but if you’ve built a solid foundation, you’ll not only survive—you’ll do well. Learn the culture, respect the process, and always stay connected to your “why.”

What is your favorite dental procedure?

Full zirconia crown preparation and fabrication for a molar. I enjoy the satisfying blend of structure, aesthetics, and function—all shaped by your own precision and planning. It’s also a common procedure, which makes mastering it even more rewarding.

I worked with the CEREC workflow for four years, and that hands-on experience made me truly love the process.

What do you do in your limited free time to ensure you are taking care of your mental and/or physical health?

I give myself space to breathe—walks, phone calls with family, social media posting, scenic drives, and the occasional cheat meal are part of my rhythm. Exercise helps me reset, and stepping outside the books makes me stronger when I return to them.

GET ACTIVE: run, meditate, yoga, take a walk outside, or spend time outdoors to unwind SNACK SMARTER: less sugary/acidic foods/drinks - think b a l a n c e ;) HYDRATE: water keeps your mouth clean and combats halitosis, which may result from dry mouth

It’s so important that we recognize how stress impacts oral health so we can better support and educate our patients.

Taking care of ourselves helps us care better for others.

Surviving Dental School D3 PERSPECTIVE

Tin Cao

What was the biggest adjustment to starting in clinic, and how did you manage it?

The biggest adjustment was juggling multiple patients and trying to keep everything organized. It was overwhelming at first, but staying on top of my schedule, keeping detailed notes, and using checklists really helped me stay on track.

How was your 7-week rotation?

What was your biggest take-away?

I went to APLA for my 7-week rotation and honestly, I learned so much. It really helped solidify a lot of clinical concepts and gave me a better understanding of patient management in a real-world setting. Also, I felt more comfortable when I came back to the TDC for my IPCE challenges.

What’s your best piece of advice for incoming D3s starting clinic?

Be patient with yourself. It takes time to get the hang of things, so don’t be too hard on yourself if it feels like a lot at first. Stay organized, ask questions, and take one patient at a time.

Are you thinking about specializing? If so, how’s the residency prep going?

Yes, I’m interested in OMFS. I’ll admit I feel a bit behind in terms of residency prep, but I’m working on catching up. It’s a process, and I’m just trying to stay focused and consistent with studying.

What are you most excited for as you step into your final year?

Definitely spending more time with my classmates. We’ve all grown so much together, and I want to make the most of this last year with them before we all go our separate ways.

If you could give yourself one tip just before entering clinic, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - as long as you learn from them. Every experience, even the tough ones, will make you a better provider.

D 4 P E R S P E C T I V E Mariam Alsaadi When did you start your job search, and what steps did you take early on to prepare for the process?

I started my job search early in 4th year. I knew I wanted to have options lined up before graduation, so I updated my resume, talked to mentors, and reflected on what kind of environment I’d thrive in. I also made sure I was clear on my long-term goals, like serving in the Air Force and looked for opportunities that aligned with that path.

What strategies did you use to find job opportunities?

Networking was huge for me. I had honest conversations with faculty and former classmates about their experiences. I also checked job boards and wasn’t shy about cold emailing offices or programs that stood out to me. Some of the best leads came from people I already knew just by letting them know I was searching such as reciters.

Can you walk us through your interview experience?

Most of my interviews felt like conversations more than formal Q&As. I was asked about my clinical experience, how I work under pressure, what kind of support I’m looking for as a new grad, and my long term goals. To prepare, I reviewed my experiences and practiced framing them in a way that showed growth, resilience, and my passion for patient care.

What factors were most important to you when evaluating job offers?

I was looking for places that aligned with my values somewhere I could keep learning, feel supported, and give my best to patients. Mentorship was a big factor, along with the overall culture and mission of the practice or program.

I also thought about how each opportunity would set me up for my future in the military.

What are your top tips for students when it becomes time to apply for jobs?

Be intentional. Know what you want, and don’t settle just to check a box. Use your network, people are more willing to help than you think. Still worried ? Speak to job recruiters. Trust the process; the right fit will come if you stay true to your goals and values.

R D A Spotlight Michelle SCHOEBEL What inspired you to become an RDA, and what do you love most about your role?

I was inspired by an uncle that was a dentist, and I had the opportunity to work and learn in his office as a teenager. I love working with students and the interactions we have.

What’s a fun or memorable moment you’ve had while working in the dental school clinic?

R D A Spotlight KRISTI TORRES Tell us about yourself in 2-4 sentences For those that don’t know me, I love books, coffee, country music and all things Gilmore Girls and Golden Girls. In my free time, I like to spend time at sporting events with my boyfriend Kenney and I love to spend time with my dog, Kooper.

What inspired you to become an RDA, and what do you love most about your role?

My aunt pushed me into dentistry, she’s a hygienist and told me to try it. I fell in love with the field instantly. I love that there are different areas in the field and as an assistant I really enjoy ortho because I like to work independently, but here I like that I get to utilize my skills in all areas and help everyone. I really enjoy being hands on with the students and teaching them as well as learning with them.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to dental students working with RDAs in clinic?

Don’t be scared of us. I know that sometimes we may come off stern or maybe harsh, but it is not because we are trying to intimidate you or be mean to you. We just want you to get the best experience you can here and sometimes we need to help guide and push you out of your comfort zone to do that.

What’s a fun or memorable moment you’ve had while working in the dental school clinic?

As sad as it may be, seeing the classes graduate is my favorite part. It means that you are ready to go into the real world and practice everything that you have learned here. And knowing that I played some role in that, is truly rewarding. It’s always hard to say goodbye, but seeing where everyone ends up is always fun to see.

What inspired you to become an RDA and what do you love most about your role?

I’ve always been passionate about helping others, and after overcoming my fear of dentists, I discovered a strong interest in dental care. My father’s encouragement and my personal experiences inspired me to pursue a career as an RDA. I’m grateful for the opportunity to not only face my fears but also turn them into something positive.

Being an RDA is so much more than just a job; it takes a special kind of person. If you love making people smile and are passionate about what you do, it can be one of the most rewarding things I have done in life.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to dental students working with RDAs in clinic?

Building a strong relationship between dental students and RDAs is essential for providing quality care. By working together as a team with trust & respect for each other’s skills, knowledge patients will receive the best treatment possible. As the saying goes: “If you take care of me, I’ll take care of you.” Mutual support and collaboration are key in the dental clinic.

What’s a fun or memorable moment you’ve had while working in the dental school clinic?

I truly cherish the moments when students show genuine interest and excitement in learning; especially when they reach their clinical or academic goals. These moments make all the hard work and challenges of being an RDA completely worth it. It’s an honor to be called “Mama Bear” by my group of students and to witness their growth and success.

If you could choose a theme song for your workday, what would it be?

I was inspired to become an RDAEF because I wanted to expand my skills and take on a more advanced role in patient care. What I love most about my role is being able to make a meaningful impact—not only on patients by helping restore their smiles—but also on students, by supporting their learning and confidence in clinical practice.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to dental students working with RDAs in clinic?

Respect and communication go a long way—take the time to collaborate with your RDAs, ask questions, and learn from their hands-on experience. We’re here to support your success, and the more you work as a team, the smoother and more enjoyable your clinical days will be.

What’s a fun or memorable moment you’ve had while working in the dental school clinic?

One of my favorite moments was watching a nervous student complete their first restoration with confidence after weeks of practice. Seeing their excitement and pride in their work reminded me why I love being part of the learning process.

If you could choose a theme song for your workday, what would it be?

annual session Highlight By: Nadia Talaksi Stepping Into Something Bigger This past February, I had the incredible opportunity to attend ASDA’s Annual Session in Kansas City, Missouri, and while I knew it would be a great experience, I didn’t realize just how impactful it would be. I was familiar with ASDA’s core values and appreciated the work they do, but being there in person completely changed the way I see the organization. It helped me understand why ASDA matters—not just to me, but to the future of our profession. From the moment I walked into the conference, I was surrounded by passionate, driven dental students from all over the country. It was inspiring to be in a room full of future dentists advocating for meaningful change, debating policies, and pushing for inclusivity and innovation in our field. It was also incredibly special to bond with our older exec board members and see the behind-the-scenes work that makes our chapter thrive.

A Seat at the Table Another impactful part of Annual Session was witnessing the transition of ASDA’s National Executive Board. Being part of that transition—and actually having a voice in it —was a powerful reminder of how student-driven ASDA truly is. We had the chance to ask real questions, engage in meaningful conversations, and see firsthand how much ASDA values transparency, leadership, and member input at every level.

Big Conversations, Bigger Impact One of the biggest takeaways from the session was how much ASDA cares about accessibility. There was a powerful conversation about creating more opportunities for students to attend conferences— especially those from chapters that may not have the funding or support to travel. A resolution was introduced to develop a nationally funded program to help make that happen, and it was inspiring to see how seriously ASDA takes inclusivity and representation.

annual session Highlight Give Veterans a Smile Another highlight for me was learning more about the Give Veterans a Smile initiative. This program focuses on providing free dental care and outreach to veterans—a group that often faces significant barriers to receiving the oral healthcare they need. It was a moving reminder that beyond the policies and procedures, we’re here to serve people—real people with real needs. Programs like this are where advocacy and compassion meet—and they reaffirmed why I chose this path in the first place.

A Proud Moment for WesternU One of the most meaningful moments at Annual Session was seeing WesternU ASDA recognized on the national stage with a Gold Crown Award. It was a very proud moment for our chapter and proof that all the hard work, from strategic event planning to securing sponsorships, to community outreach efforts in Pomona are making a real impact. This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire executive board, past and present. Leaders like Kendall, Kristie, Eboney, and Valerie laid a strong foundation, and I feel incredibly grateful to be part of a chapter that continues to build on that legacy. The energy, leadership, and momentum we’ve created together make me excited for what’s ahead.

Unexpected Highlights Beyond the sessions, one of the best parts of the conference was connecting with dental students from across the country. It was so fun getting to know people outside the conference—exploring the city together, grabbing dinner, and sharing laughs after long, full days of learning. Also, fun fact: Kansas City is in Missouri (not Kansas… who knew?). We tried the local BBQ, spotted Chiefs gear everywhere (as a Commanders fan, I had mixed feelings), and got to experience a new city in the best way possible.

Why You Should Get Involved If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved in ASDA, take this as your sign. Whether you're into advocacy, leadership, networking, or simply connecting with others who care about the future of dentistry, there’s a seat at the table for you. Conferences like Annual Session aren’t just for executive board members, they’re for anyone who wants to make an impact. This experience gave me a fresh perspective and reminded me how much impact we can have as students when we show up, speak out, and support each other. It was exciting, eye-opening, and honestly one of the most rewarding parts of dental school so far. Let’s keep this momentum going—and continue making WesternU ASDA something we’re all proud to be part of.

NATIONAL ASDA

Updates

The 2025 ASDA Annual Session in Kansas City was one for the books. It brought together passionate dental students from across the country to shape the future of our profession through policy, leadership, and advocacy. As someone who’s seen firsthand how ASDA empowers its members, this year's session felt especially impactful.

One of the biggest changes this year was ASDA’s transition from 11 to 13 districts. This change was made to better reflect ASDA’s growing membership and improve how national ASDA supports chapters. The updated structure aims to balance chapters more evenly across districts, create more localized leadership opportunities, and make ASDA even more responsive to student needs.

WesternU is now officially part of District 13, and represented by our new District 13 Trustee, Honesty Boone from UCLA. Of course, the biggest part of Annual Session is voting on resolutions. This year, several were passed that speak directly to the challenges we face as students and future providers.

Resolution 305-2025 calls for support for dental students experiencing poverty. It helps ensure that no student feels isolated or overlooked because of financial hardship.

Resolution 306-2025 focuses on helping our chapter leaders succeed by providing clearer access to essential ASDA documents and operating resources. As someone who's been involved in chapter leadership, I know how important it is to have access to this information to ensure chapter success.

Resolution 307-2025 opened up a valuable conversation about presidential leadership training. While the intent was to encourage in-person training at national conferences, there was also recognition of the need for accessibility and equity, especially for students who may not be able to travel. Whether inperson or virtual, it's clear that leadership development remains a top priority for our association.

Resolution 400-2025 establishes a Special Needs Task Force. This task force will explore best practices for improving disability awareness and access in dentistry - not just for patients, but also within the profession itself. It’s an important reminder that oral health care should be inclusive and that, as future dentists, we must be prepared to meet the needs of all our patients with competence and compassion.

One resolution that sparked a lot of conversation was RC308-2025, which caps registration fees for Annual Session and the National Leadership Conference at $650 for the next two years. Because the cost of attending conferences is often a barrier, this resolution helps ensure that the opportunity to attend national meetings remains accessible to more students.

Shortly after Annual Session, ASDA members joined practicing dentists in Washington, D.C. for ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day. Students met with legislators to advocate for several important bills, including the REDI Act, which would allow dental and medical residents to defer student loan interest while in training. They also pushed for the inclusion of dental benefits under Medicare Part B and supported the DOC Access Act, which would limit anticompetitive insurance practices that affect both providers and patients.

ASDA continues to evolve in ways that reflect the real needs of its members—expanding districts, capping conference costs, and passing policies that prioritize equity and accessibility. These updates show that ASDA is committed to supporting dental students not just in school, but as future leaders in dentistry.

Autism Acceptance Month is a time to celebrate and support the autistic community while continuing the work built on decades of advocacy. Originally known as Autism Awareness Month in 1970, it became officially recognized in 1988, and evolved into Autism Acceptance Month in 2021.

Being seen isn’t enough, real inclusion matters, and acceptance means creating spaces where autistic individuals feel valued, supported, and heard.

Spring awareness months Celebrating Cinco de Mayo Have fun while honoring history and culture Each year on May 5th, festive decorations, margaritas, and tacos make their appearance in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. But beyond the colorful parties and themed events lies a holiday deeply rooted in Mexican history and resilience. Cinco de Mayo is often misunderstood in the U.S. as a general celebration of Mexican culture—or mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day. In reality, it commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While not a major holiday in Mexico outside of Puebla, it has become a day of cultural pride for many Mexican-Americans, especially since the Chicano Movement of the 1960s.

Here are a few ways to acknowledge its history while still having fun: Learn the real history of Cinco de Mayo and share it with friends Support Mexican-owned businesses and artists.

Take this opportunity to try more traditional dishes like mole poblano or chiles en nogada Highlight authentic Mexican culture—through music, food, films, or literature—rather than caricatures or costumes.

L O B B Y D A Y Spotlight Breanna Tyner The most impactful part of attending Lobby Day was learning about the current climate at the Hill (anxious about Medicaid cuts) and about the challenges we face for passing dental legislation. After ADA and CDA advocacy days, it's clear how important advocacy in dentistry is. The bills being proposed on the state and federal levels affect water fluoridation, fair insurance policies, Medicaid dental coverage, and loan repayment policies.

Key Takeaway: My biggest takeaway from advocacy day was to not be afraid and to give your all into something that you're passionate about.

It can be intimidating presenting bills to legislators, but it's the best experience I promise.

Danielle Fitzgerald The most impactful part of attending ADA Lobby Day was being able to use my voice to advocate for what’s right; not just for myself, but for my peers and the future of dentistry.

What made the experience even more encouraging was seeing that many of the congressional liaisons we met with already supported the issues we were advocating for. It felt empowering to shed light on these issues, and reinforce their importance through faceto-face conversations. This experience shifted my perspective in the best way. I used to think that advocacy was something reserved for professionals or those in leadership positions, but Lobby Day really showed me that every voice matters, even as a first year dental student like myself. I now understand that advocacy is a responsibility that we all share. It made me realize that staying informed on legislative issues is just as important to being a dentist as the clinical side of the profession.

Do your research, avoid using dental jargon, and just be yourself.

Claire Lower The most impactful part of attending Lobby Day deeply personal stories from dentists and students whose lives/careers have been directly affected by the policies we were advocating for. These shared experiences added an emotional layer to these policies, making it clear they were not just legislative items. This experience opened my eyes and showed me the role that advocacy can play in dentistry. It encouraged me to look beyond the next four years, and instead look at how using my voice now can impact my future profession.

Ingredients 2lbs boneless chicken 2 tbsp olive oil Juice of 2 lemons 2 tsp lemon zest 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 tbsp fresh thyme, fresh rosemary Salt and black pepper to taste Recipe Whisk together the ingredients and let chicken marinate in them in either a bag or shallow pan for at least 30 min in the fridge Heat a grill or grill pan to medium heat Brush the grill with oil and grill chicken 5-6 minutes on each side Let the chicken rest for 5 mins before serving and ENJOY!
