Dear Friends, I am so grateful for your ever faithful prayers and generous support for Western Theological Seminary. This fall, we reached record enrollment for the third semester in a row, with 386 students across all degree programs.

Amidst news about the decline of the church, students are being called to WTS for ministry preparation and sustenance. Praise God! Yet, we also know that we could not have done this without your partnership in the Gospel. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

Western Theological Seminary was founded when seven of the first eight Hope College graduates petitioned the RCA General Synod for permission to continue their theological education in Holland, Michigan. Over 155 years later, Western remains faithful in her mission to form women and men for faithful Christian ministry and ongoing participation in the Triune God’s ongoing redemptive work in the world for the Reformed Church in America, but also for the broader church. Today, the fastest growth is among students who consider themselves to be non-denominational. As former president Dr. I. John Hesselink noted in his inaugural address, “It is simply not true, as our stationary still indicates, that we merely serve the Reformed Church. We serve the church of Jesus Christ around the world!”

This is why, as you might have heard, our Board of Trustees submitted a request to the 2021 General Synod to allow Western Theological Seminary to move from our current status as a seminary that is legally owned and operated by the General Synod to an affiliated status, the same status enjoyed by the colleges. Being an affiliated seminary of the RCA would allow us to build on the strength of our Reformed heritage while also increasing our service to the broader church. It would also strengthen the governance of the Seminary since the Board of Trustees would be granted final decision-making authority on matters most pertinent to the Seminary.

During the General Synod, this request was referred to the General Synod Council for review, along with the Commission on Church Order. I am looking forward to working closely with these bodies to make sure that our request is re-presented to the General Synod in an orderly manner. IN-PERSON CHAPEL RESUMES This pandemic has been hard on everyone. It has amplified a range of cultural, political, theological and denominational divisions. Even at the seminary, where we are colleagues and partners in ministry, it is expected that there will be differing opinions. Yet, coming together to worship in person, where we are able to hear each other’s voices as we pray and engage in God’s Word, and when we come to the table to eat and drink and remember the body of Christ, we are reminded of the important things that we hold in common. It reminds us that, by God’s grace, we love, support, and trust one another.

A LV I N PA D I L L A Dr. Alvin Padilla, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Director of Advanced Degrees, and Professor of New Testament, recently announced that he will be leaving Western Theological Seminary to pursue a position as Dean of Latino and Global Ministries at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, in Massachusetts.

This position allows Dr. Padilla to continue his investment in Latino and Global Theological Education while moving closer to his children and grandchildren.

While we are greatly saddened that Dr. Padilla will be departing Western, we are grateful for the longstanding impact that he has made. Since joining WTS in 2016, Dr. Padilla has been a creative and innovative academic administrator, launching the Hispanic Ministry Program and revamping the Doctor of Ministry program.

He served as the VP of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty (2016-2019). The Hispanic Ministry Program now enrolls around 100 students, and the re-designed Doctor of Ministry Program has grown to over 100 students.

In speaking with Dr. Padilla on his departure, he shared that his hopes for the future of the institution are that we will “remain flexible and embrace an entrepreneurial spirit as we continue to adapt with a changing world.” In reflecting on Dr. Padilla’s impact on his time at Western, Rev. Rudy Rubio from The Reformed Church of Los Angeles shared, “What does it mean for a seminary to truly make a student feel at home? How about when the Dean and his family open their home and offer you a place to stay during intensives? This is what Dr. Padilla and his family did for me... E S C O B A R A R C AY Dr. David A. Escobar Arcay joined WTS this fall as Associate Professor of Theology and the Director of the Hispanic Ministry Program. Dr. Escobar is originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico, where he visits two or three times a year to see family, eat ‘real’ food, and enjoy the beach and tropical scenery.

Growing up with a Pentecostal mother, a Roman Catholic father, and experiencing many different church backgrounds throughout his life in the United States, Dr. Escobar describes his faith journey as being shaped by people from many walks of life and widespread readings in various subjects.

For over twenty years of his life, Dr. Escobar has worked in various areas of education, including as a teacher, professor, and principal. The most rewarding part of working in education for him is how it can shape a person’s life. “Education empowers individuals,” David shares. “[It] gives them a voice, and helps them to pursue compassion, justice, equality, mentorship, and the fear of the Lord.”

For many of these reasons, Dr. Escobar wholeheartedly embraces his role as the Director of the Hispanic Ministries Program. He views his role as an opportunity and blessing to “be a crucial player in closing the gap between seminary and church, to promote and cultivate a space for people to strengthen and enrich their faith, to model habits and practices that can enrich one’s spiritual life, and to help welcome students into educational settings,” while many of his students are immersed in their own ministry context. He believes that all people are theologians because anyone who has wondered, even just once about who God is, is a theologian.

Dr. Escobar loves learning from his students. One of his favorite parts about working with seminary students is having a shared language of faith and a shared calling. He also loves conversations surrounding the intersections of theology and culture as well as theology and history or the social sciences. Dr. Escobar admires the richness of the past, the communion of saints, and how studying history can benefit the church today.

Dr. Escobar plans to continue the growth and success of the Hispanic Ministry Program. He plans on establishing more cohort groups throughout the nation. He would like to see a fully-functioning Master of Arts program for our certificate graduates. He also plans on developing on-campus summer learning opportunities such as seminars, workshops, and conferences with national and local speakers.

The videos will be teaching aids to accompany the Bible study, Celebrating Sabbath: Accepting God’s Gift of Rest and Delight. .

CALVIN, PARTICIPATION AND THE GIFT Dr. J. Todd Billings, Professor of Reformed Theology In June, Dr. Billings’ first book, Calvin, Participation and the Gift (Oxford University Press: 2008) was released in a Korean edition. This is Dr. Billings third book to be translated into Korean.

THANK YOU DR. JIM BROWNSON Rev. Dr. Jim Brownson ‘80, Professor of New Testament, retired from Western Theological Seminary in August. Jim is the longest-serving Western faculty member and the second longest-serving member of the Western staff and faculty, having served 32 years on faculty.

As a student at Western in the 1970s and recipient of the Henry J. Pietenpol Senior Excellence Award, Jim returned to Western in the 1980s to serve as the Assistant Professor of New Testament.

Professor Brownson distinguished himself as a teacher, scholar, author, and administrator. Forming generations of students through his teaching, the RCA through his consistent service, the wider church through his writings, and the ongoing shape of Western’s curricula and academic programs, Dr. Brownson’s legacy will long endure.

In addition, Dr. Brownson has recently published Questions Christians Aren’t Supposed to Ask, which covers topics such as hypocrisy, politics, and fruitfulness, to name a few.

Is there a way to live with the tension of disagreement? Is it possible for people who share a mission but disagree on some tactics or have different opinions to live and work in harmony?

At WTS we believe there is. We desire to create a space where we can engage in hard questions as a community. The following pair of articles will be the first, we hope, of many, that will share different perspectives on the same topic by two people who are committed to the same mission and to learning from one another.

I S T H E R E S PA C E F O R M A R K E T I N G I N THE CHURCH? If using the words “church” and “marketing’ in a sentence makes you uncomfortable, you are not alone.

Like any resource, marketing tools can be abused and used for self-promotion. However, they are just tools, and like drills and hammers, marketing tools such as personas, websites, and social media can help us in our mission.

A persona is a profile of an imaginary person who embodies our audience. We give our personas names, ages, occupations, hopes, dreams, fears, and identify where they are in their faith journey. By asking specific questions and intentionally deciding who we are communicating with, we will start to see the many people we are trying to reach. Rather than self-promoting, this practice builds empathy and ensures we are connecting with the people we are called to serve.

While most of us know that websites are important, we aren’t always as focused on how easy it is to find our website or how user-friendly our it is. Not every ministry budget has made room for search engine optimization services and new websites but most new attendees will interact online before they enter a sanctuary. Investing resources into our digital spaces in the same way we invest in our physical spaces ensures that we are available when people are looking for us.

How to use social media in a God-honoring way is a topic that could fill volumes. For today, consider that Youtube and Facebook rank in the top five search tools on the web. At a minimum, we should ensure that people looking for our ministry will find up-to-date information and be able to contact us across multiple platforms. Beyond that, posting with humility, and a focus on how we can bless our followers can ensure we are not simply adding to the internetnoise.

Like a hammer used to build things or tear them down, the impact of marketing tools depends largely on the hands that wield them. May we consider carefully the tools we use with all humility and care.

THE PETERSON CENTER’S LONGING FOR A FA I T H F U L W AY Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should do it.

At the Peterson Center, we’re prayerfully asking God to help us nurture a way of being that is faithful, contemplative, joyful, holy, and deeply human. There are powerful, entrenched cultural forces arrayed against these simple hopes. Our frantically paced, ego-driven world insists we should clamor to be recognized; we should move lightning fast; and we should always be on the cutting edge. It’s assumed we must always have a quick, witty response in our back pocket—and a bullhorn at the ready. However, we believe that faithfulness means resisting these oppressive assumptions. We long for a better way.

What if, rather than increasing effectiveness or building platforms or maximizing efficiency, our churches and neighborhoods need our focus on friendship, humility, and wisdom? What if we are starved by our lack of curiosity? What if we need fewer words and more silence? What if our moment begs for courageous voices emerging from a lifetime of fidelity rather than reactionary impulses? What if we long to be people whose gifts flow out of a posture of prayer, lament, and hope?

Eugene Peterson insisted that the American church thought too little about the way we do our work, the way we live together and offer God’s wisdom to the world (as if the end result—like increasing members and offerings or “winning” a culture war—justified whatever the cost to get there). If we want to pursue a God-saturated life interwoven with relationships that ennoble human dignity and pursue the sacredness of God’s world and our place in it, then we need a way of going about this that doesn’t destroy it in the process. We have to actually live the kind of life we want to nurture. We can’t create a beautiful world in ugly ways.

“The ways Jesus goes about loving and saving the world are personal,” Eugene insisted. “[N]othing disembodied, nothing abstract, nothing impersonal. Incarnate, flesh and blood, relational, particular, local.” This is why, in our desire to be relational, and to foster beauty and goodness and truth, the Peterson Center (at least for now) won’t be on social media. This isn’t a brittle rule from which we’ll never waver, but we long to be as human and slow and thoughtful as possible. You can, however, find us on our webpage (petersoncenter.org) and our email list—and we always welcome old-fashioned letters.

Our hope is to encourage faithful presence: tending to our gardens, opening conversations, paying attention to God, bearing witness to all that is human and holy. And we’re convinced that this will mean less noise, less promotion, more listening, more grace.

LAUNCH OF THE EUGENE PETERSON CENTER FOR C H R I S T I A N I M A G I N AT I O N On November 8 and 9, 2021, we celebrated the launch of the Eugene Peterson Center for Christian Imagination. In 2020, Western was chosen by the Peterson family as the site that would house Eugene’s diaries, letters, sermons, book manuscripts, Regent College teaching material, and extensive documentation related to the translation of The Message.

In recognition of the Peterson Center launch, a two-night celebration took place at WTS and Pillar Church in Holland, Michigan. Members of the Peterson family and the Western community joined together to celebrate, remember, and honor Eugene Peterson’s legacy that will continue through the Center for Christian Imagination. Musical performances were given by Paul Zach, Orlando Palmer, Jessica Fox, and Michigan–I–O. “The Peterson Center is not a mausoleum to Eugene,” Peterson Center director, Winn Collier, said, “but rather a community that hopes to bear witness--with beauty, hopefulness, and fidelity--to the God Eugene pointed to his entire life.”

DOCTOR OF MINISTRY PROGRAMS The D.Min. program at Western Theological Seminary is a formational process with an intellectual focus. Three-year cohorts are designed around important themes such as pastoral care and counseling, preaching, disability and ministry, and pastoral leadership. New cohorts are introduced each school year.

In 2021, two cohorts have launched and we anticipate launching a new cohort in May 2022.

CHURCH OF REFUGIA: LAUNCHING MAY OF 2022 This Doctor of Ministry track challenges pastors to reshape their ministry and formation practices to grow toward a refugia model. Refugia are small pockets where living things, like the church, survive in the midst of a crisis. Amid our weariness and bewilderment, how can we resist the temptation to cling to systems of power and instead focus on identifying and creating refugia, while joining with others to participate in God’s work of renewal? Participants will explore the church of refugia, experience a variety of examples, and envision how to reshape the life of faith for a period of upheaval and transition. This Doctor of Ministry track seeks to prepare leaders who can inspire gospel communities and help nurture a new kind of refugia church.

CHURCH IN MISSION After having launched in April, seven Churches in Mission teams from across the United States have been listening to their neighbors, identifying local needs and assets, and asking what God is doing in their neighborhoods. Since their launch, several teams have already been inspired by organizations and individuals already working in their neighborhoods. The simple act of intentional listening built new connections and relationships.

While they continue a posture of listening, the Churches in Mission teams are cultivating gratitude in response to what they have heard.

Each team has identified at least one person or a group of people they would like to thank. Over the next three months, teams will throw a block party, host a dinner, distribute gift baskets, or find another creative way to thank their neighbors for helping identify what God is calling them toward next in local mission. They will dwell in their neighborhood in new ways; listening, grateful, paying attention to what God is calling them to do right where they live. VISITING SCHOLAR Western Theological Seminary welcomed Dr. Tite Tiénou as a visiting scholar for the fall semester. Dr. Tiénou occupies the Tite Tiénou Chair of Global Theology and World Christianity and is Research Professor of Theology of Mission at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. After serving as the Dean of TEDS for 13 years, he now holds the title of Dean Emeritus. He would like the Western community to know that he is “an ordinary person on a long journey.” He is now embarking on his 51st year of being a minister of the gospel and has lived in the United States for about four decades. One of Dr. Tiénou’s highest values is upholding the dignity of all people, especially those who are ordinarily cast down.

THE HOPE-WESTERN P R I S O N E D U C AT I O N PROGRAM RECEIVES A C C R E D I T O R A P P R O VA L There is much to be thankful for in the latest news of the Hope-Western Prison Education Program. Among the most significant achievements is that Hope College’s accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, has formally approved the Muskegon Correctional Facility as an “additional location” to the main Hope College campus in Holland.

The Higher Learning Commission has also approved a request to include incarcerated students among its student body. In addition, the State of Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity has provided the Hope-Western Prison Education Program with its seal of approval. Hope College now exists in Muskegon as it has in Holland since 1866.

JUSTICE AND R E C O N C I L I AT I O N C O H O R T The Justice and Reconciliation Cohort launched this year with its first group of five students. It is a program for in-residence Master of Divinity students that is designed to serve as a means of practicing “hermeneutical belonging” - a way of being with one another that informs how each participant thinks about social-political causes and instances of systemic injustice. Cohort members will learn to think theologically and contextually about underlying causes and cures for racial and social justice/injustices. They will then increase their capacity to intercede and lead in community. As participants begin to think more imaginatively and less linear about justice work, they will be responsible for organizing justice and reconciliation-specific learning experiences for the WTS community.

ALUMNI NEWS Wendell Karsen ‘63 recently published Tools for Teachers: Christian Education Resources for Church, Home and School. The book is a compendium of up-dated materials Wendell wrote and taught from the high school to seminary levels over his sixty-year ministry as a pastor, teacher, and seminary professor in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and the USA. He has also just published a second edition of his book From Advent to Ascension: A Journey with Jesus. Both books are available on Amazon.

Reverend Wayne Sneller ‘81 has retired after 40 years of full time ministry within the RCA. He served at Zion Reformed Church in Sheffield, IA, Faith Reformed Church in Lynden, WA, Maurice Reformed Church in Maurice, IA, and First Reformed Church in Sully, IA. He and his wife Tammy will make their home in Luverne, MN. Tom Eggebeen ‘86 (D.Min) Tom has recently retired after a career in the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), and is now living in a Presbyterian retirement community in Pasadena, CA with his wife, Donna, who is a retired realtor.

Mary Lokers Merrill ‘89 retired in January of 2020 after serving for 27 years in chaplaincy at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Grand Rapids, MI. Along with several other roles, Mary was recently elected as the Vice President of the Zeeland, MI Classis (RCA). Additionally, Mary was the first woman ordained as minister of Word and Sacrament in Zeeland Classis (1989) and will be it’s first female Vice President/President.

Dear Friends, 2021 certainly was a year that taught us to work hard and ultimately trust in God’s provision. All of our normal development activities were different as we learned new ways to connect with supporters and tell the story of how you have helped students follow God’s call.

We welcomed new faculty and said goodbye to others while pursuing the mission of raising up Christ-centered leaders for the sake of the church and God’s ongoing redemptive work in the world. This last fiscal year also marked the second full year of President Felix Theonugraha’s tenure as president and a new leadership team structure with Dean Kristen Deede Johnson leading the faculty. The leadership team is functioning on all cylinders and has drawn closer together while navigating the effects of a global pandemic, denominational issues, and a new leadership structure. As my team and I met with many of you and your congregations, I was so encouraged by the level of trust and support that you have for all that is happening at WTS. As you read this report, I hope you are encouraged in the ways Western has stewarded your gifts for the sake of Christ’s kingdom.
