EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION We value experience at Western. Before students graduate, they work in labs, complete internships and contribute meaningful work to professional organizations. Small classes, engaged faculty and strong community relations mean students in all disciplines gain hands-on experience that prepares them for life after college.

ART Students in the Art program take full advantage of newly renovated Quigley Hall, which features studios and facilities set up for ceramics, ironworking, graphic design, printmaking and more.

BUSINESS Students can launch their own start-ups, create marketing plans for real businesses, belong to professional organizations and spend an entire semester immersed at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.

BIOLOGY Students conduct grant-funded research published in peer-reviewed journals and present their findings at professional conferences. Our Thornton Biology Research Program ensures students gain plenty of time in the field or lab.

CHEMISTRY Students run labs, conduct grant-funded research and attend a variety of professional conferences. They even put on a chemical “magic show� for local elementary students.

COMPUTER SCIENCE Students develop facial-recognition programs and 3-D software. Many choose to complete an independent study, which can focus on anything from Python to robotics. Our students even build autonomous robots under the NASA Colorado Space Grant Consortium.

EDUCATION Students spend their senior year completing a teacher residency in a K-12 classroom of their choice. During the residency year, students benefit from a network of support, receiving continuous feedback from their mentor teacher, regional coordinator and expert Western faculty.

EXERCISE & SPORT SCIENCE Students complete professional, grant-funded research and are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Many also provide Gunnison residents with professional personal training through the Wellness Elevated program.

GEOLOGY Students explore everywhere from Hartman Rocks and the West Elk Mountains, to the Black Canyon, Rio Grande and San Juan Mountains.

RECREATION & OUTDOOR EDUCATION Students spend weeks training in the wilderness areas surrounding campus and intern for 600 hours before graduation.

SCHOLARSHIPS Students are automatically considered for merit scholarships and discount programs. They are awarded whichever saves them more money.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS* All merit scholarships are automatically awarded upon acceptance. Freshman may receive them for up to four years and transfer students may receive them for up to three years. Take your GPA and your test scores and draw your fingers together.

Ex: If you have a 3.0 GPA with a 22 ACT or a 1100 SAT we award a $2,000 per year In-State scholarship or $6,000 per year Out-of-State scholarship.

EARLY ACTION DISCOUNT* If you are merit-aid eligible and are accepted for Fall 2018 by Dec 31, 2017, you will receive a $500 increase to your merit scholarship.

BE YOURSELF Our students are comfortable being themselves on and off campus.

They’re artists, athletes, musicians, ranchers and environmentalists. They come from cities, suburbs and small towns. Some prefer spending their weekends outside, others enjoy the indoors. Together, they make up the supportive and inclusive Western community.

MULTICULTURAL CENTER The Multicultural Center supports Western students while celebrating the diversity of people in and around Gunnison. It’s home to Amigos, Black Student Alliance, Native American Student Council, Polynesian Chant and Dance Club, and Asian/Pacific Islanders Club.

AT HOME ON CAMPUS As part of the underclassmen two-year live-on requirement, first-year students reside in Living Learning Communities that connect them with peers who have similar interests or academic concentrations.

When you leave for college, your residence hall becomes your home away from home. Our Residence Life team works hard to ensure your transition goes smoothly. The friendships that you build with your roommate and neighbors provide a strong support system during your college years.

For sophomores, the Second Year Experience program focuses on programming surrounding life skills (like cooking, filing taxes, outdoor survival techniques and health and wellness education).

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP (ALPS) ALPS provides both tuition support and guidance for first-and second-year Western students. The program encourages service-based learning.

The first year experience for an ALPS student focuses on participation. For incoming freshmen, opportunities presented at biweekly ALPS meetings forge connections between academics and community activities. The second year of ALPS blends these service activities with leadership training.

Kailum Willmore arrived at Western uncertain of what he wanted to study. Now, he plans to declare a major in Sociology with a Criminal Justice emphasis and minors in Politics & Government Pre-Law and Business Administration. “I really liked my Sociology class.

It really spoke to me,” Wilmore said. “I’ve always had a sense of altruism and I feel as if with Criminal Justice, I’ll be able to help others.”

Krista Chavez of Taos, New Mexico always knew she wanted to go into the medical field but was surprised to find how much she enjoys the Biology program at Western.“Western has helped me excel because I got to know my professors on a personal level and I’m comfortable asking them for help.” Her active involvement outside of class continues to help her feel supported.

TYLER BRANDT | STUDENT Major | Business Administration with an emphasis in Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE)

Tyler Brandt got involved with start-ups in high school and knew he wanted to continue exploring them in college. He was drawn to Western’s ICE program and partner ICE Project, which organizes entrepreneurial events in the Gunnison Valley.

“I wanted to come in and help build it and be a part of something at the school,” he said.

Leleux remembers Western as an intimate campus where she formed meaningful relationships with peers and professors. She used those connections and her interpersonal skills to advance her career in business, sales, marketing and product development. Most recently she served as Ebay Inc.’s vice president of global customer experience.

RICHARD BUCHANAN ‘13 Almunus | Art History, Business Administration Minor

Buchanan always knew he wanted to pursue a career in art. He now lives in New York and his works are displayed in public collections in New York City and Austria. “When I graduated I had a network of the brightest, most resourceful and determined people I will ever meet. This network extends all the way to New York and got me where I am today.”

KATHERINE SPALDING ‘15 Almuna | Computer Science

Spalding landed a competitive programming job with FedEx shortly after graduating with her Computer Science degree. She says the most valuable lesson she learned at Western wasn’t about a specific computer program. In Computer Science, you will never know all of the languages available. “You have to learn how to learn. And I really think I learned how to learn when I was at Western,” Spalding said.
