The really extraordinary p a r t of the whole business is t h a t the individuals wno a re uitimaieiy responsible tor th is rerusai to consi der the people’s wishes have nothing In common with us. They come to us, if they come a t all, to r an hour or so; view our town and settlem ent from a hiii-xop, or glance at it rrorn a motor car, and are gone. Then, trom th e ir distant office, they dictate our lutu re, actuated wholly b y -so m e shttt to balance their books, op by the determ ination to perpetuate tn ir gravest biunoers ra the r than be honest enough to adm it them. We have seen, in th e question of the hotel licenses and the sale of Mirrool House, how oustinately and how unscrupuousiy the Commission can fight to rid itself of its white elephant. The sol dier se ttlers wili not lightiy torget th e despicable reioroncc to their mentality. Is it hard then to discern a similar motive behind the refusal to give way in th is m a tte r ot the Post Office sitel * Some years ago ti.e Commission wont to t h e expense of an ela borate survey and sub-division oi the hill above the town. At a subsequent sale by auction, the blocks offered realised fabulous prices an^ the Commission's hopes were borne high indeed. Need less to say, before very long, rnost of the luckless speculators philo sophically abandoned t h e ir so rry bargains; but t h e Commission has not been so ready ot wit. The memory of t h a t moment of success still gives th em to hope t h a t they may yet rid them selves of this owner white elephant.
