Spring is here! Most of us have seen an early start to the golf season with the temperatures in March being above normal. Here at Niagara Frontier G.C., we are open for our members to walk, no carts on the course yet. As I know everyone fields the same question from their membership, “When are the carts going to be allowed on the course?” I’ve answered that question 200 times already!

Our Section Staff emailed everyone the updated NYS Covid-19 Guidelines for golf in 2021. It is also posted on the front page of our Section Website. Thank you to our Executive Director, Steve Bartkowski, who teamed with the 3 other Section ED’s in NYS, to get these guidelines changed to a more up to date and positive manner. The posting of these regulations in February by the State, seemed to set us backward from 2020. The collaboration by the four NYS Section ED’s is greatly appreciated by the PGA Members in all four Sections. Well done Section ED’s!
Some great news has come to our Section’s PGA HOPE Program as we are receiving some national publicity. CBS Sports came into town to interview Steve Bartkowski, PGA Members, Tim Fries and Brian Jacobs, about the work they are doing within our HOPE Program. Navy Veteran, Scott Smalter was also interviewed about how the program has helped him personally. We should take this as a wonderful achievement to all our Section Professionals who have assisted in running this program over the years. As we know though, the real heroes are the Veterans that fought for our freedom! This CBS Sports Special will be aired on May 15th, before the PGA Championship. Set your calendars for our 2020 Annual Meeting/2021 Spring Meeting on Monday April 19 th. We will have special guest, John Lindert, National PGA Vice President at the meeting for a Fireside Chat. During the Chat, you will be able to ask him questions pertinent to the National PGA. We will be following all CDC Guidelines for this meeting. As of right now, it looks like we will be outside in a large tent at Glen Oak G.C. I ask that all attendees be prepared and bring a mask. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Section Meeting! WNYPGA Members and Associates, Throughout the golf season the Western NY PGA Section staff works hard to put on many events to serve the WNY golf community and our members. However, we need some help and support from our WNYPGA members in the Section to make these events successful. Those WNYPGA members who volunteer at events will earn MSR credits for their time and assistance. Some events will require volunteers to be involved with setup, teaching/coaching, greeting golfers and other duties. Please complete the volunteer form by selecting dates and events you would be interested in volunteering for.

ABOUT The PGA National Club Championship represents a one-of-a-kind event that brings together Amateur Club Champions from golf courses coast to coast. This event is a celebration of the best amateur players and their PGA Professionals who help them achieve greatness at their local club. Winners of 2020 club championships will receive an invitation to the 2021 PGA National Club Championship at Pinehurst Resort in March. The championship will have 4 divisions (Men’s, Women’s, Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s). Each division will play 54 holes of competition on courses No. 2, No. 6, and No. 8. 312 players from 48 states are competing. LETTERS FROM YOUR NOMINEES WNY PGA Board of Directors nominee for the position of Director My name is Dan Cordaro and am currently the Head Professional and Director of Operations at Wellsville Country Club in Wellsville, NY. I have been a member of the WNYPGA since 2006 and elected to Class A in 2010. Prior to becoming a member of the PGA, I was the owner of our successful families multiple Printing and Graphic arts business’s. By combining my previous 25 years of successful business ownership, PGA/PGM work experience and education, I believe that I am a qualified candidate for the Director position on the Western New York Section Board of Directors. I’ve also been fortunate (in my prior PGA years) to have been a member of a semi-private golf course. During that time I served on multiple boards of that club allowing me to have a unique understanding of “ Both Sides Of The Counter”. As I have progressed through my years in the Golf business, I have been allowed by many Golf Course managers and owners to actively engage myself and work in all departments of each club. These educational and work experiences have shaped my global knowledge of the industry that includes: Agronomy and grounds, Budget and Finance, Event Coordination, Planning and Sales, Food and Beverage, Golf Shop Operations and Membership Sales. This overall golf and business acumen would serve the WNYPGA board of directors well as we move forward with the planned future objectives. LETTERS FROM YOUR NOMINEES JAY SUTHERLAND, PGA I am honored to have been nominated for the WNYPGA Board of Directors and to have been able to serve on the Board during my past term. It would be a privilege to continue assisting our exceptional leaders; Steve Bartkowski, the team in the Section office, the current Board members and Officers. The section has made great progress in many areas; actively helping our members navigate the 2020 golf season and proceeding cautiously with section business to put our section in a great position to continue being a leader in the areas it represents. It is my pleasure to help continue this progress and actively help our section. I am very proud of the recent progress we have made with both the employment committee and governance task force. The work of the employment committee has already had an immediate impact improving the many of the positions within the section positively influencing course leaders when posting new positions and helping section professionals improve their current positions. While we have made great progress in a short period of time, we are just beginning to gain momentum across the section and I am excited at the possibility to continue this mission. If provided the opportunity to serve on your Board another term, I will continue to work closely with the committee, Steve, Chris and fellow Board members in helping the jobs in our section grow and our section members prosper for many years. Tim Fries, Steve Bartkowski, Dan Antonucci, and I have spent considerable time reviewing the constitution and by-laws of the section. There have been many discussions and updates based on the input from your Board that has led to a final set of proposals for the review and approval of section members. The proposals build off the fundamentally sound constitution and by-laws that has served the section well for so many years. This experience has provided great insight and perspective into the governance of the section, which has an impact on every member and associate. Being intimately involved in this process has provided the insight that has hopefully helped make me a proactive and productive member of the Board. Giving back to the section through service is not only a privilege but something that I regard as a responsibility as a proud member of our section. We have had excellent leadership in the past from many of our members that has laid the groundwork for the successful section programs and initiatives currently in place. I strive to build on these past successes to further expand and solidify these programs, helping develop new ones when appropriate. I will continue to be a proactive Board member if elected and strive to ensure the long-term prosperity of our section and members; enhancing your membership and providing support to Steve Bartkowski, the section staff and section officers. Growth of Game Grant in collaboration with the NYSGA & RDGA Foundations gave over $11,000 back to Player Development Programs Run by PGA Professionals in 2019. PGA REACH WNY HISTORY AND MISSION The PGA REACH WNY Foundation (Western New York PGA Foundation, Inc.) was founded in 2010 by local PGA Professionals of the Western New York Section, PGA of America. The Foundation was created with the goal of providing support to various organizations in the Western New York Section through the game of golf. PGA REACH WNY will look to fund programs supporting its mission including the Western New York Section PGA Junior Golf and various underprivileged youth golf programs. The Foundation will strive to fund, conduct, and/or support these initiatives and many others that serve under the founding pillars – Youth, Military and Diversity in golf.
GRANT OVERVIEW In 2021 the WNYPGA REACH Foundation, in collaboration with the New York State Golf Association, Buffalo District Golf Association and the Rochester District Golf Association Foundations, will provide grants to junior golf/growth of the game programs that meet the established program criteria. The goal is to award a maximum of $12,000 in grants based on the number of applications that meet the criteria. We encourage all Western New York PGA Members and Associates to offer a growth of the game program at their facilities or within their communities and to utilize this grant to initiate a new program or to enhance and strengthen an existing program. EVALUATION CRITERIA A committee comprised of the members of the associations conducts initial reviews and determines if all information required is provided. The committee may meet or speak with the candidate further if required. The committee then determines the benefits of each grant request and makes recommendations to the entire PGA REACH WNY Board of Directors, which makes the final decision. Junior Golf/Growth of the Game Grant Criteria/Consideration: 1. Program must have a WNYPGA Member or Associate involved.

2. Programs must target ages 18 and under, individuals with disabilities, military or diverse populations. 3. Grant application must include a budget & explanation of how the grant funds are to be used. 4. Grants will be limited to (1) per facility at a maximum of $2,000 each. Additional grant request will be considered if there is funding available & if the additional request is for a different program targeting different demographics, program goals, etc. 5. Consideration will be given to span and benefit to the community. 6. Grant recipients will be asked to provide a follow-up report outlining the results of the program & the perceived impact on growing the game. All 2021 Grant recipients must provide a follow-up report to be eligible to receive a grant in 2022. 7. Along with a follow-up report, documentation & explanation of how the grant money was used must be provided. GRANT SUBMISSION
The Grant Application Deadline for 2021 Programs is Monday, April 19th, 2021. Grant Applications will be awarded based on Foundation Funding available and those that match the criteria above. Organizations may apply for grants in consecutive years. Grant awards will be used solely to run said program and no one individual or organization is to profit from the grant. The Foundation does not fund endowment campaigns, religious or political activities.

The Western New York PGA conducts a special awards program each year that gives recognition to Western New York PGA Professionals for their outstanding contributions, performance, and achievements within their golf profession and the Western New York Section. NEW THIS SEASON: With the approval of the Board of Directors, The Section Awards Committee has changed the nomination process to the spring to ensure WNYPGA Professionals have time to get involved. We all understand how busy everyone is in the summer and we hope this will allow for more participation in the Member program. The deadline to submit your nominations is Monday, April 19th, 2021. As we continue to create a greater sense of collaboration with our fellow allied associations, the Superintendent of the Year Award has been added. Be sure to nominate any worthy candidates. Be sure to fill out the local compensation survey you should have received via email. Haven't received it? Contact Steven Bartkowski at sbartkowski@pgahq.com. The Employment Committee and Section office continues to actively work to help improve the employment landscape for the PGA Professionals of our Section. In 2020, due to the tangible data from this exact survey, we were able to raise the compensation levels in many open positions as well as help those in their current roles. To continue helping Section facilities improve open positions, assist WNYPGA Professionals who are in their current jobs, and those applying for new positions the assistance of the entire Section is required. As you are already aware, this information is a cornerstone in the employment process and is consistently asked by and provided to employers at the start of the search process. In 2020, your Board of Directors approved the below local survey that will allow you to provide information anonymously to the Section. You will be asked for your total compensation in 2020, its composition (salary, lessons, bonus, commissions, golf shop ownership, etc) and the benefits provided by your employer. The survey will also request your relevant facility information; specifically the labor expenses for the golf operation, golf and facility revenue.
The survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete if the above information is organized in advance. The professionals who complete the survey will have access to the 2020 tiered facility document, contract templates, budgeting templates and year end review templates. Those professionals who do not complete the survey will not be allowed to register for section events until their survey is completed. The survey monkey tool will collect your email address so that we know who has completed the survey, but your answers will remain anonymous and cannot be linked to the email that you submit. Featuring Hope Warkoczeski PGA WORKS Fellow What is your original hometown? I am from Plymouth, Michigan which is about 30 minutes outside of Detroit and about 20 minutes from Ann Arbor. How long have you been a PGA Member? I am not a PGA member. However, it is a goal to sometime in my life become a PGA member. What/who inspired you to get into the golf industry? My Mom. It is a bit rare to hear that a female inspired me to enter golf but her dad, my Grandpa Cooper, encouraged my mom to play golf even if it was just recreationally. Later, my mom signed me up for the LPGA Girls Golf Program to get me involved in golf. The Girls’ Golf program is where I fell in love with the game because I had positive role models in my female LPGA and PGA golf professionals as well as in my mom.

Are there any fun programs you have initiated for golfers? Doubles Golf is one of the initiatives I have enjoyed growing. The 2 player 9-hole scramble has been one of my favorite formats while growing my own golf game and I know the power it has to help more people get involved in the game. It is also a social program that can be as relaxed or as competitive as the player wants so it encourages people to just get on the course.
One of my favorite programs would have to be the WNYPGA Junior Tour as this is where I spent a lot of my 2020 Summer Season. The juniors have so much personality and I enjoy seeing their success as they grow their golf game. How long have you been in the section and have you had any other jobs? I have been in the Section for 9 months. It has been a whirlwind experience learning the ins and outs of what happens in a PGA Section as well as in the PGA REACH WNY Foundation. My past work experience is working in the Pro Shop of Fox Hills Golf & Banquet Center, a sales and marketing internship with Golf Digest Planner & Tournament Shop, Intern in the Central Michigan University Athletic Compliance Office and as an Operations Assistant for the 2019 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.
Have you won any awards or honors? I have not won any awards or honors yet, but my Certificate of Pride in Public Service from the Department of Veterans Affairs from the 2020 PGA HOPE Season is an accomplishment I am proud to share. My Uncle Tim is a Navy Veteran, my Grandpa Cooper served in the Air Force during WWII , my Grandpa Warkoczeski served in the National Guard and I had friends at school who were in the service so I love serving our Veterans. What are some of your main goals, career or playing? My career goals are to continue to work in the golf industry and to continue to grow the game of golf. I hope to continue to improve my golf game as I have slacked off these past few years while in school and have not been practicing like I should. One item on my bucket list is to make a hole in one. PGA Junior League Captain Registration is OPEN Captain registration for PGA Junior League is open and you can register to help young golfers build friendships, knowledge of the game, and a community. Captains must be PGA Members, PGA Associates or LPGA Members in good standing. Coaches can assist captains and do not have to be members. To register as a PGA Jr. League captain you can click here! There are some changes to PGA Jr. League in 2021 as we continue to make the best experience possible to grow the game of golf. The goal of WNYPGA Junior Golf Days is to offer young athletes the chance to grow their athleticism and expose young athletes to the game of golf. Instruction will be focused on Stage Two of the American Development Model (ADM), FUNdamentals, to develop skills for play focused on fun, inclusion and developmentally appropriate activities. Students age 5 to 9 will be exposed to driving, chipping, and putting through various activities and games while receiving instruction from top PGA Professionals in Western NY. • Courses serve Ages 5 to 9 years old • Free event for participants & open to the public (i.e. non-members at the golf facilities) • Each event is capped at 50 participants to ensure everyone’s safety & the quality of instruction • Masks are required at these events • The session will be 45 minutes in length • Equipment will be provided by the WNYPGA & PGA REACH WNY Golf's new pathway is built on the principles of the American Development Model (ADM), a proven, long-term athlete development model that has been successfully applied to USA Hockey, USOC, USA Basketball and USA Lacrosse. American Development Model was designed by sports scientists to help support a lifetime affinity to sports, and to develop athletes to their greatest potential. These principles align physical and psychological development to stages, delivering appropriate skills and exercise at the appropriate time.

FORE TOUR SERIES PARTNERS WITH INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR MASTERS ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP The International Junior Masters, the oldest junior invitational in North America (1953), is pleased to partner with the Western New York PGA to expand golf opportunities for junior boys and girls! The event is help each year at the end of June in East Aurora, NY, just outside Buffalo, at East Aurora Country Club. Players from around the country and around the world attend the International Junior Masters to compete in a unique format of two medal rounds for seeding, then five flights which play four rounds over two days to determine the champions. The overall champion of the International Junior Masters wins an exemption into the Porter Cup amateur championship. The new partnership between the Western NY PGA and the International Junior Masters will allow our elite junior golfers from the Fore Tour Series to compete in the 2021 International Junior Masters. Medalists from the 2021 Fore Tour Series Tournaments will get exemptions in the 2022 International Junior Masters.
ABOUT THE FORE TOUR SERIES The Fore Tour Junior Series provides a regional affordable competitive 36-Hole Event opportunity for juniors. These events, which are backed and conducted by PGA Section Staff and Professionals, will be held at premier venues throughout the Western NY, Central NY, North East and Tri State PGA Sections of the PGA of America. The Fore Tour Junior Series is open to all Juniors ages 13 to 18 before May 1, 2021. A joint initiative founded in 2013 by the Masters Tournament, United States Golf Association and The PGA of America, Drive, Chip and Putt is a free nationwide junior golf development competition aimed at growing the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf. By tapping the creative and competitive spirit of girls and boys ages 7-15, Drive, Chip and Putt provides aspiring junior golfers an opportunity to play with their peers in qualifiers around the country. Participants who advance through local, sub-regional and regional qualifying in each age/gender category earn a place in the National Finals, which is conducted at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters Tournament and is broadcast live by Golf Channel.
