President’s Message On behalf of the entire University, I thank you for your support of Western New England during the last fiscal year (July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019). You were among the nearly 3,500 generous donors whose participation helped move us closer to achieving the goals of the Campaign for Our Second Century, the most ambitious fundraising endeavor in the University’s 100-year history. The Campaign represents an inspiring call to action for our next century— causing us to rise in stature and quality while remaining competitive and accessible to bright and deserving students. You have demonstrated that you are willing to invest in the potential of our students, and in turn, the contributions they will make to society. Your support allows us to develop and strengthen the comprehensive programs and cross-disciplinary opportunities that permit our students to explore experiential learning opportunities before they graduate. Our vibrant student experience, coupled with remarkable career readiness programming and mentorship, helps us graduate highly employable and well-rounded individuals poised for success in their personal and professional lives. Your constant support and generosity, whether you are a recent graduate just beginning to give back or a longtime benefactor, is vital to our evolution and our mission. At Western New England, we strive to keep our tuition within the reach of students and their families. Last fall, more than 40% of our incoming undergraduates were first generation students. Gifts in support of financial aid made all the difference in our ability to welcome these and so many other students to campus. Your gifts to scholarship aid allow us to continue recruiting and retaining hundreds of students who otherwise may not be able to attend our University. You have demonstrated your belief in Western New England University and the promise it holds for future generations of Golden Bears. Our future is bright, and I thank you for your support and generous giving. Sincerely,

Anthony S. Caprio President

Grateful for an Education That Kick-started His Career, Entrepreneur Steve Kitrosser Gives Back to Inspire the Next Generation

“I spent my entire career working on things that didn’t exist back when I graduated,” says Steven Kitrosser ’66BSIE/’70MBA, a highly successful entrepreneur and pioneer in data storage technology. Steve’s journey offers parallels to what many graduates of the Class of 2020 may experience as their careers unfold and lead them into industries and jobs yet to be imagined. But what they, like Steve, will have with certainty is the advantage of a Western New England University education. “It really says something about Western New England that it has been ranked number five in the country for getting jobs,” says Steve, referring to analysis of federal loan recipients’ data from the Federal College Scorecard. “What I got back then—and students still get today—are the benefits of smaller classes and a very practical education.

The thing that this University does best is to prepare you to make immediate contributions in the workplace—and that’s what employers around the world are looking for.”

financial aid and their own generosity through The Steven and Elaine Kitrosser Industrial Engineering Endowed Scholarship will help make that happen.

“Change happens so fast; you need to be well versed in many areas to be able to grow with an industry. On the first day you step out of Western New England, you are ready to be productive and contribute to your organization.”

A Young Grad’s Gift from the Heart Steve made his first formal gift to Western New England in 1968, just two years after graduating with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and while studying for his MBA. Like many of our young alumni today, Steve was working on loan debt and at his first post-graduation job when he made his initial donation to Western New England. That small gesture of gratitude for the education, experiences, and relationships he had gained would lead him to become one of the University’s most generous donors whose volunteerism, leadership, and service would help shape the institution for decades. “I remember what it’s like when you are just starting out,” he recalls. “But it doesn’t matter if you can only afford to give $10, $25, or $50— every dollar counts. And it’s important to keep close to the school and remain connected. As I progressed through my career, I was lucky enough to be able to give more and get involved. It was something I wanted to do because I felt my experience at the University had helped me, especially in the beginning.”

“Our intention is for recipients of our scholarship to be women,” explains Steve. “In that way, we hope to make sure that bright young women with an interest in Industrial Engineering will not be deterred by an inability to finance their education.” Through the popularity of programs such as FIRST® Robotics competitions for school-aged children hosted by the University, Steve is encouraged that more girls will choose that path. “Our public school systems in this country have done a good job in getting more girls interested in STEM subjects,” he says. “With the addition of more female faculty and through our scholarship, we hope to attract more women to Western New England programs and to pursue careers in technology. Women must play a greater role in the future of tech and Western New England offers an ideal environment to help make that happen.” He continued, “I hope other alums feel the same about their programs. The best way to keep them strong is to stay involved and make a gift. You never know where it will lead.”

Paving the Way for Women in Tech What impresses Steve the most about the University today is its focus on driving innovation. “Through my various roles and points of connection to the University, I keep in close contact with the professors in the College of Engineering,” he says. “Along with Professor Mary Schoonmaker in the College of Business, they are doing a phenomenal job in educating students in what it means to be involved in innovation. The professors are inspiring students to develop their own startup ideas. They are also teaching and researching in areas that could become the next big thing.” Steve and his wife, Elaine, view providing opportunities for women in particular of prime importance for the future of technology and to Western New England. They hope that the Campaign for Our Second Century’s focus on

About Steve A major contributor to the Sleith Hall Renovation and Expansion Project in 2014, Steven Kitrosser was inducted into the Western New England University Engineering Hall of Fame in 2002. He has served on the Board of Trustees since 2006, and currently sits on the Campaign Cabinet, leading the Campaign for Our Second Century. He is also a member of the College of Engineering Industry Advisory Council. In 1966, Steve began his career with Chandler Evans, a division of Colt Industries focused on missile actuation systems and helicopter fuel controls. From there, he went on to Digital Equipment Corp. to be part of its burgeoning disk drive divisions in Massachusetts and Colorado. He was then recruited by Maxtor Corp., a startup magnetic storage company headquartered in the Silicon Valley with facilities in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, as a vice president of operations and became an executive officer in 1986. Next, he became CEO of MaxOptixs, a joint venture of Maxtor and Kobata Corp. of Japan focused on optical drives. From 1992 to 1995, he was president and CEO of Micronics Corporation. Steve and his longtime business partner found their greatest startup success with the launch of Quinta, where he served as CEO. That venture was bought within a year by its major investor, Seagate Technologies. After the acquisition, Steve served as vice president of Consumer Solutions at Seagate as well as continuing to run Quinta as its CEO. In 2000 he departed to become founder and chairman of InPhase Technologies, a holographic disk drive company.

Engaging the Next Generation of Donors in the Digital Age Younger alumni especially want to know where their money is going and how it will benefit the University. Recent technology investments have increased the ease of donating, added new channels for sharing how donated funds are used, and enabled more targeted communications around philanthropic opportunities.

Tapping Into the Appeal of Crowdfunding

Beverly Dwight

Vice President for Advancement As Western New England University embarks on its second century, the Advancement Division is focused on how to best strengthen ties with alumni and cultivate the next generation of volunteer leaders and donors. National trends in giving are shifting in the digital age. The University is adapting to a new sense of personal responsibility and desire for transparency voiced by donors. Vice President for Advancement Beverly Dwight leads the University’s fundraising and engagement activities. “Traditional methods such as phone-athons, direct mail, and email still remain part of our outreach and fundraising strategy. However, we are also leveraging new technology to reach a broader audience,” says Dwight.

4 l President’s Report 2018-2019

Crowdfunding is a method of fundraising for specific Western New England University projects through the collective effort of alumni, family, friends, and donors. This approach leverages the broad networks of University supporters using social media and other digital platforms to achieve greater reach and exposure. Since the University invested in a crowdfunding platform, it has proven a successful tool to engage alumni and friends. For donors, crowdfunding makes giving easier and more transparent. They

know exactly where their gift is going and how it will be used. And for student groups and academic departments, crowdfunding provides a method to reach alumni and others who may be interested in contributing to their cause, who otherwise might never have known of the need. In fiscal year 2019, 11 groups hosted crowdfunding projects through the platform, collectively raising nearly $18,000 with gifts from 233 donors. As of January 2020, 11 fiscal year 2020 projects have generated more than $40,000 in new gifts. Recent crowdfunding projects have included student participation in Alternative Spring Break, conference attendance for members of the National Society of Black Engineers, the Clinics

Students volunteer in Texas during Alternative Spring Break.

in the School of Law, and the Women’s Soccer team trip to Italy, among others. More crowdfunding projects are added regularly, so stay tuned for new opportunities.

Texting Delivers the Personal Touch With technology as a core part of the engagement strategy, the University has also launched a text communication platform to better connect with alumni, with early results showing promise. Texting delivers a personalized message, including event invitations, volunteer opportunities, reminders, and invitations to give. Many young alumni prefer a text message over a phone call, and the ease of texting allows them the flexibility to respond when it is most convenient for them.

Another initiative that taps into the spirit of being a Golden Bear is WNEgives, the University’s annual community giving event. Launched in 2016, the event promotes 1,919 minutes of giving in honor of the University’s founding year. WNEgives has continued to grow each year, attracting more individual donors, larger gifts, and increased engagement from volunteer Social Ambassadors. In its first year, WNEgives raised over $100,000 from 336 donors. In just a few years, the event has grown to attract nearly 1,000 donors with collective giving exceeding $200,000. While much of the growth can be attributed to inspiring donor challenges and expanded communications, there is no doubt that the University’s investment in a dedicated software to manage the giving day and the Ambassadors program has played a key role in the continued success. The online system allows visitors to make a gift, observe the overall progress of the giving day, monitor progress on individual causes and

challenges, see who else donated, and interact with a social media activity display. A key feature of the site is the ability for volunteer Social Ambassadors to share WNEgives with their networks. WNEgives supporters can also host challenges—a donation of matching funds or a fixed amount contingent upon achieving a donor goal to a particular cause. Participating in WNEgives appeals to many donors, as the online system allows them to feel part of something much bigger than themselves. In fiscal year 2019, 995 donors participated in WNEgives, collectively donating more than $204,000, and continued growth is expected in future years. As we continue to work to strengthen the Golden Bear network and donor base, we do so with the future of the University in mind. When alumni and donors continue to invest in Western New England University, they create opportunities not just for today’s students but for generations to come, laying the foundation for a second century of promise and excellence.
