LIVE MASCOT GUIDELINES

COLONEL ROCK IV “RAY”


WHO IS COLONEL ROCK? STUDENT RECRUITER Throughout the year, Colonel Rock attends a variety of recruitment and retention events to help generate a freshman class and retain current students at WIU.

PHILANTHROPIST A philanthropist at heart, Colonel Rock loves to give back to the University and community. Several times throughout the year, Colonel Rock participates in events and activities that help provide support for a variety of causes.

SUPPORTER OF STUDENT-ATHLETES Colonel Rock is a fervent supporter of Western Illinois University Athletics and our studentathletes.

EDUCATOR Colonel Rock advocates for the education of today’s youth. He frequently visits local schools to educate on the proper way to approach and treat animals, tell the WIU story, and promote school spirit in hopes that one day they’ll grow up and decide to come to Western.

ALL-AROUND AMBASSADOR Colonel Rock has become both a face and voice for Western Illinois University, representing the institution on a local and global stage. Colonel Rock has mass appeal; all in support of WIU’s operational and strategic initiatives.

COLONEL ROCK’S TONE IS:

Content for Colonel Rock is at times lighthearted and fun. At other times, the content is showcasing a strategic initiative at Western Illinois University. While Colonel Rock supports various organizations and entities outside of the University, Colonel Rock doesn’t enter into polarizing or controversial subject matter.

NAME USAGE WHEN USING THE COLONEL ROCK NAME IN ANY MARKETING MATERIALS, THE NAME SHOULD APPEAR AS FOLLOWS: Colonel Rock, Colonel Rock IV, or Colonel Rock IV “Ray” Each live mascot is given a “Out of Character” name at the time of acquisition. The out of character name should not be used as the primary identifier of the live

mascot, but can be used in conjunction. There is exception to using the out of character name independently in materials when the out of character name ties in with a theme of a tagline or theme (i.e. “Sweet Baby Ray” or “Valentines Ray”). Appropriateness of use will be determined by University Marketing.


VISUAL IMAGERY WHEN USING COLONEL ROCK PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEO IN ANY MARKETING MATERIALS, HIS APPEARANCE SHOULD BE AS FOLLOWS: • Use the current Live Mascot unless the marketing material is based on historical topic, at which point older photos of previous live mascots can be used. • Photos should be edited so that genitals is removed or covered

• Should appear with the official letter sweater on (purple, gold, or camo). An exception to this is when using a photo of the mascot as a pup (less than 1 years of age) when the official letter sweater may not fit. • If any props or other imagery is included or added into any picture (i.e. photoshopped), it must be nonoffensive, non-discriminatory, and does not display text or image(s) that will harm the reputation and integrity of Western Illinois University.


APPEARANCE • Photos/video being produced should refrain from using Colonel Rock in a position of endorsement for any products, services, political party, etc.., unless under sponsorship agreement. • When appropriate, images of Colonel wearing other clothing, collars, or hats is permissible as long as it ties to the topic or event/activity being marketed.

• No other College or University markings should be worn or affixed to the mascot uniform. The only exception to this is if being used to pay honorarium. • No pictures or video of Colonel Rock without wearing an official sweater or outfit should be used for marketing purposes. The only exception to this guideline is if it ties with the theme (ex. swimming when it makes sense for the mascot to not be wearing clothing).


LIVE MASCOT LOGO THE LIVE MASCOT LOGO IS OFFERED IN 4 OPTIONS TO SUIT A VARIETY OF COLOR OPTIONS. 3 color version: Useful when full color is desired and able to be placed on white, gray and lightly colored backgrounds or on images as long as visibility and contrast are present. 2 color version: Able to be placed on purple backgrounds only.
