LETTER

FROM THE CEO Dear Western Force Members, Supporters, and Family, Welcome back to HBF Park, the home of the Western Force for the Women in Rugby Round. This week marks our first home game of the 2022 season against the reigning Super Rugby AU champions, the Queensland Reds. It’s a special occasion, as we have a double-header with the Super W team playing first against the Reds. I wish captain Trilleen Pomare and our Super W team all the best. We are moving into a new era of women’s rugby in the West, and I urge all WA rugby fans to get behind the team. Having been away with the Super Rugby Pacific team, I know everyone is excited to be home in WA to play in front of our Members, fans, supporters, and families once again. The players can’t wait to run out on HBF Park in front of the Sea of Blue. I would like to acknowledge the Force players, staff, and management who have been away from their loved ones. It’s been a huge effort from all involved. Having been based, or played matches, in Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, and recently completed hotel quarantine in Perth has taken a toll. Still, they’ve all worked through it with great professionalism.

The team is proud to have secured six points over the two games, but we’re not satisfied, as we believe we should have returned with two wins. Finally, I welcome Brad Thorn and his Reds team to WA and encourage our faithful supporters to again be a key member of our team. There is no group of more vocal supporters in the rugby landscape. We are the Leading Force!

Anthony J Lewis CEO, Western Force 3

MATCH PREVIEW

Super Rugby AU 2021, Round 10

Well, we finally have a home game. How exciting is that! This week the Sea of Blue gets their long-awaited reunion at HBF Park. Even better, we also get to cheer on the Force in the Super W season opener to kick off the double-header. The Force, who haven’t played against the Reds since Round 2 in 2020 and with plenty of new faces featuring for both sides, it’s set to be an intriguing contest. Wallaroos legend Rebecca Clough has returned to the Force and will be going head-to-head with fellow Wallaroo lock Aleena Greenhalgh of the Reds, in what promises to be a key match-up. Following a dominant Force men’s Super Rugby Pacific win against the Reds and narrow loss to the Brumbies, Tim Sampson’s side will have a spring in their step, especially being back on home soil. The forward pack have and the tight five are performing as well as any in the competition. The challenge will come up front should Taniela Tupou be fit to go around, otherwise we would expect some dominance from the Force at set-piece time. 6

Going up against an in-form Harry Wilson and an unknown combination of Fraser McReight, Liam Wright and Angus Scott Young will be no easy task and the breakdown will be that special place where the game could be won or lost. James O’Connor has had two pretty good games, but Ian Prior, Issak FinesLeleiwasa and Reesjan Pasitoa will be equal to the task.

It’s going to be a tight game in great conditions, and we reckon the Sea of Blue will get the boys home. Rugby Wrap Super Rugby Pacific Score Predictor: Force 32 Reds 26

THE LEGENDS Rebecca Clough

When it comes to celebrating Women in Rugby Round, it’s hard to argue a better player to acknowledge than Rebecca Clough. Having played in three World Cup campaigns for the Wallaroos (2010, 2014 and 2017), Clough is a legend of the women’s game. Clough is proud to call WA home after moving from Sydney to Perth almost 14 years ago. Since heading west, Clough has represented

Cottesloe, RugbyWA and the Western Force at the highest level throughout her esteemed career. As one of the most capped Wallaroos in history, Clough has also played for the world-renowned Barbarians invitational side in 2019. Clough played in the 29-15

win against the Welsh national team at the Principality Stadium alongside fellow Force teammate and Wallaroo, Ariana Hira. The lock, who has studied Criminology and Juvenile Justice at university and worked as a Youth Custodial Officer, has returned to Super W for 2022 once again to play for the Western Force. Named as an inspiration among her teammates, Clough’s elite experience and professionalism gained in Super W and on the international stage with the Wallaroos will prove invaluable for the Force. We can’t wait to see Clough back in the Force jersey throughout the year.
