LETTER

FROM THE CEO Dear Western Force Members, Supporters, and Family, It was fantastic to meet and chat to so many of our Members last Friday before the game against the Rebels. I heard you loud and clear, and we remain determined to bring sustained longterm success to Western Australia, all while preserving the culture that makes this club so special.

As we experience a challenging period on the pitch, I can assure you that the squad

Last week’s result was tough to take. Our second-half fightback fell short of the mark, and we were gutted. However, the beauty is that can respond this week against our eastern states rivals the Waratahs. We’re disappointed to have the Super W season finale cancelled due to Covid close contacts in both camps. Having inspired so many with resilient performances this season, the team deserved to mark the campaign with a game in front of Force fans, family and friends – this will make watching them at HBF Park in 2023 even more special. Yours in rugby,

want nothing more than to give you, our loyal Sea of Blue, a home win.

Anthony J Lewis CEO, Western Force

MATCH PREVIEW

The Rugby Wrap podcast, hosted by Mitch Hardy, Heath Tessmann and Mick Colliss After coming off two heartbreaking one-point losses, the Western Force finally gets a long-awaited chance to take on the Waratahs in front of the Sea of Blue supporter base. Darren Coleman’s men had the bye last week so will be feeling pretty fresh as they hit the tarmac in Perth. Key matchups this week will be the 10s and how well they can steer their side around the park. The Waratahs’ Charlie Gamble, who was playing Subbies rugby for Petersham Rugby Club in Sydney a few years ago, is quickly becoming a cult hero and the contest between him and Kane Koteka will be something special. The Force coaching staff will have a couple of selection dilemmas this week but it all starts up front and picking the strongest starting tight five will be crucial in keeping the Waratahs at bay. Out wide is where the Force should look to strike, using the speed at their disposal, including Manasa Mataele and Toni Pulu. In defence, the Force centres will need to put some extra

padding on their shoulders because keeping Isiah Perese and Lalakai Foketi in hand won’t be an easy task. The Waratahs really need to chalk up a win leading into the trans-Tasman leg of the tournament whereas the Force needs to regain some dented pride after their narrow losses. They would have hurt. All roads lead to Melbourne next week for the Super Round, so let’s hope the Force can break the drought and get their season back on track. Score Predictor Force 18 /// Waratahs 17

THE LEGENDS NATHAN SHARPE

As the foundation captain with 92 Super Rugby appearances to his name for the club, and over 150 in total, Nathan Sharpe is the definition of a Western Force legend. Renowned as one of the world’s best locks, boasting arguably the greatest lineout strategies in the game and an undoubted love for the run and carry, Sharpe etched himself into Force folklore during his seven years in the west (2006-2012). With the club in its infancy and beginning its Super Rugby journey in 2006, the Wallabies forward was instrumental on and off the pitch. Known as a team first and approachable player by his teammates, Sharpe played an integral role in forming the family first Western Force culture that lives on to this day. 16

Having arrived at the Force as a Wallaby, Sharpe cemented his status as one of the greats with the national team during his time in Perth. Sharpe enjoyed a phenomenal 12-year Wallabies career, which included 116 Test caps, three World Cup campaigns (2003, 2007 and 2011), two John Eales Medals (best Australian rugby union player - 2007 and 2012) and 10 Tests as captain. Sharpe’s unquestionable impact has seen him immortalised with the club’s best and fairest award named in his honour – the Nathan Sharpe Medal.

Nathan Sharpe of the Force leaves the field in a guard of honour after the Round 18 Super Rugby match between the Crusaders and the Force on July 14, 2012 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
