LETTER

FROM THE CEO Dear Western Force Members, Supporters, and Family, It’s been a challenging fortnight with COVID-19 preventing the club from taking part in the inaugural Super Round in Melbourne last weekend, but I’m so proud of the way the players, coaches and staff have reacted. This week presents us with a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the ANZAC legacy. The players are wearing a commemorative ANZAC jersey, with 20% of all sales being donated to proud partner Spinifex Brewing Company’s F88 campaign, which supports Australian returned service men and women.

The reigning champions have been the form club but with a trio of Wallabies returning to our squad, and in what I believe is close to full strength the WA rugby fans are in for an absolute treat. The objective for the squad and coaches over the next month is to control the controllables which is our performance and now more than ever the boys need your support! I cannot wait to see the Sea of Blue in full force, so be sure to tell your family and friends that this is a game to enjoy and be proud.

We’re delighted to host the second instalment of the Hughes-Dreibergs Shield match between the Australian Defence Force and the Western Australian Police Force, which is set to be another nail-biter. Our boys face their toughest test so far this season, as they go head-tohead with the high-flying Blues and we are recovering from COVID-19 isolation.

Anthony J Lewis CEO, Western Force

MATCH PREVIEW

The Rugby Wrap podcast, hosted by Mitch Hardy, Heath Tessmann and Mick Colliss

It’s the best of New Zealand and the benchmark of the competition. They’re number one, top of the table, the equivalent of an All Blacks XV and they’re playing our boys this week. Talk about being up against it! Not only has Tim Sampson and his troops had to endure battling COVID-19, which resulted in missing out on a highly anticipated clash with Moana Pasifika, but they also get back-toback games against the best from NZ, starting with the Blues. Key players to watch - well, pretty much everyone from 1-15 in the Blues line-up. No matter whether you’re a back or forward you will appreciate the talent running around HBF Park this week. If we can get a few of our big game players for the Force to match up - the likes of Kane Koteka, Fergus Lee-Warner and Ian Prior - that will help things. It’s a great opportunity for the Force players to show Wallaby coach Dave Rennie what they can do against world-class opposition and put themselves in national selection contention. 4

It’s also a great opportunity for some of the younger players like Reesjan Pasitoa to play against and learn from genuine superstars like Beauden Barrett. And what about some of the other clashes? Manasa Mataele taking on Caleb Clarke, Hoskins Sotutu going shoulder to shoulder with the likes of our very own Brynard Stander and Tim Anstee.

Grab your popcorn folks, it’s going to be worth the watch! Score Predictor A hard fought contest with the Blues coming out on top against a determined Force side.

THE LEGENDS Nick Cummins

With 87 Super Rugby appearances in Western Force colours, 15 Test caps for the Wallabies and undeniable status as a cult legend, Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins is a true Force Legend. Cummins is certainly blessed with the gift of the gab, having been responsible for such lines as “I just saw the line, pinned me ears back and ended bagging a bit of meat in the corner there, which was tops.” Occa quotes such as that pearler saw the Port Macquarie local win plaudits off the field, while winning the hearts of Force fans on it with his passion, toughness, and habit for scoring highlight-reel worthy tries. Having represented the Force between 2008-2015, Cummins scored 17 tries along the way. The winger enjoyed a thrilling career, with a 2010 Commonwealth Games silver

medal to his name with the Australian 7s, he also had a two-year stint in Japan with Coca-Cola Red Sparks (2014-2016) and several Barbarians appearances adding to his Super Rugby heroics. In 2012, Cummins earned a Wallabies Test debut off the back of an impressive season for the Force. Started on the wing, Cummins enjoyed a winning start to his Test career, with the Wallabies claiming a hard-fought 25-19 Rugby Championships win over Argentina in Rosario. Cummins remains one of the most memorable characters to grace the game. Here’s to you, Honey Badger! 15

Spinifex Brewing Company’s F88 Lager S u p p o r t I N G V e t e r a n s M e n ta l H e a lt h Partner presentation Sig Geffrey Phillip Gregg who served with 152 Signal Squadron in Afghanistan, sadly took his life on 23rd September, 2006, as a result of his struggle with PTSD. His story and the struggles that many other returned service men and women face, is particularly close to home to Adam Barnard, the CEO of Spinifex Brewing Company. As a veteran, he has passionately encouraged Spinifex Brewing Company to be more and do more, to support veterans struggling with mental health challenges. Spinifex Brewing Company released the F88 Lager on the 14th of February 2020, dedicating 50% of the profits to veterans’ mental health charities. In Western Australia, the profits are directed to ConnectedBy a charity that aims to rehabilitate returned servicemen and women through assisting them in the crafting of beautiful, wooden surf and paddle boards. Naturally, ANZAC Day is one of the most important days in the Spinifex calendar and this year we were proud to have been involved in the creation process of the Western Force ANZAC jerseys. Spinifex commissioned renowned veteran’s artist Ian Coate, to assist in the design for both the Western Force ANZAC jersey and the re-launch of the national F88 Lager campaign. Ian’s artwork perfectly

embodies the spirit of Australian military culture which is an important piece of our heritage. If you’d like to support Spinifex Brewing Company’s mission, please visit:
