HOLIDAY EVENTS GUIDE

www.warrnamboolweekly.com.au

~ From the Mayors ~ Welcome to Warrnambool! Ngatanwarr / G’day I’m sure like many people, you’ve had a busy year. Now, it’s time to relax! And by visiting Warrnambool in summer, you’ve made the perfect choice.

Summer in Moyne is epic... our shire comes alive, not just with visitors and locals, but with energy, colour, birdlife, festivals and the odd mozzie.

Summer holidays should be easy, and in Warrnambool, cruisy beachside holidays are our specialty. Beaches, walking trails, playgrounds, open spaces, restaurants, shopping… all within walking distance. If you feel like venturing further afield, the 12 Apostles and the Great Ocean Road, UNESCO World Heritage site Budj Bim and the Grampians National Park are all within easy driving distance. You can make plans (and that’s where this guide comes in handy) or you can just see how the day unfolds. There’s so much choice so whatever you feel like doing, I hope Warrnambool helps you unwind and create some lasting memories with the people you love.

Whether you’re here for a day, a week or the whole holidays, or having a staycation you are most welcome to unwind, relax and slow down from your busy lives and enjoy your summer. We have the greatest beaches in the world, from Peterborough to Yambuk to Killarney and Port Fairy, be it a gentle stroll on an empty beach, an epic surf session, diving for a cray or rock pool exploration with the kids, we have a beach for you. So, dust off the boogie board, chuck on your favourite Hawaiian shirt and check out Moyne’s phenomenal beaches. A must do is a visit to the incredible World Heritage-listed Budj Bim, a deeply significant Indigenous cultural site, offering rich Gunditjmara history, volcanic landscapes, wildlife, crater-lake walks and the chance to spot the big three - koalas, kangaroos and emus. If you’re staying in Port Fairy, you can’t miss the Moyneyana Festival, running from Christmas Eve right through to January 26, with the highlight being the New Year’s Eve Parade. There’s something on every day and it’s all about community, connection and having a laugh with the people you love. Make sure you pop out to Koroit to check out the Lake School from January 2-7 January, it’s a craic! It’s one of the great Celtic music traditions in Australia, a chance to learn reels, jigs and tunes, sing, dance and feel that heartbeat of culture that runs so strongly through the district. Make sure you arrive hungry. From our

artisan makers to the cafes and pubs, the fresh seafood straight off the boats, our amazing farmers and the growers at our markets, this is Moyne on a plate, and it’s delicious. If it’s culture and history you’re chasing, you’re in the right spot. Every town, every road, every dune and river bend has a story, and the people you meet will tell it with pride. Moyne is a place where you can slow down, breathe deep and find something that feels like it was made just for you. So whether you’re exploring, relaxing, eating, dancing or just wandering, we’re stoked you’re here. Have a safe, epic, and salubrious summer in Moyne. January’s big draw crowd – the 2026 Flying Horse Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic – will take place over three days; January 23, 24 and 25. February will see a Super Sedans spectacular from February 19-21, as drivers compete for the national title (plus the Victorian title for Modifieds). Race enthusiasts will be treated to a huge event on Saturday, March 14 with the staging of the Victorian Sprintcar Title, along with the Super Rod Vic title. Head to Flagstaff Hill these holidays IF you’re looking for some familyfriendly fun and entertainment these holidays, head to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. Begin your journey in the state-of-theart immersion theatre for a snapshot of Warrnambool’s early history and a taste of the amazing stories you are about to discover in the village and museum. The museum is home to Australia’s richest collection of shipwreck artefacts from some of the 200 ships known to have been wrecked along this coast. From the everyday items of passengers to the famous Loch Ard Peacock statue valued at over $4 million, all have a tale to tell. Underwater videos show the final resting place for some of the region’s doomed vessels, while spectacular sailing footage from 1929 captures wild storms encountered around Cape Horn. Your entry includes a guided tour beginning at the Loch Ard Peacock at 11.30am. One of the knowledgeable guides, in full

period costume, will lead the 40-minute tour, providing some interesting facts about the museum’s collection and life in the 19th century. Visitors are reminded that no pets are permitted at Flagstaff Hill (service animals accepted). The museum and village is open daily from 9.30am until 4.30pm (subject to change without notice). For more information on the nightly shows and admission phone 5559 4600. New Year’s Eve at Flagstaff Hill is one of the best places to be in Warrnambool, with a sound and light show at dusk. This show combines three great stories. Tales of the Shipwreck Coast will take you on a journey through the ages, from local Indigenous stories to Warrnambool’s colourful whaling past, to events that gave our coastline a reputation that inspired fear and trepidation among mariners. Soak up the atmosphere before heading to the top of the hill for the best view of the Breakwater fireworks at 9.30pm.

New location for fun run RUNNERS of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the Warrnambool Running Club for its January fun run events – set to start at a new location in 2026. Runners and walkers are encouraged to take part in the 2.5 kilometre and five kilometre run and walk on January 7, 14 and 21. In the past, these events have been held at Flagstaff Hill, however, the 2026 runs will now begin at Jetty Flats (next to the BMX club at Lake Pertobe). “In the past, with cars and trains, safety became a problem so we have decided to relocate to Jetty Flats,” president of the Warrnambool Running Club Peter Molan said. “The cost is just $5 for a single entry or $10 per family, with both a five kilometre and a 2.5 kilometre course available to run or walk.” Entries will be taken each night from 5pm, with walkers to head off at 5.45pm, followed by runners at 6pm. “Each year we have donated 50 per cent of profits to a chosen charity and in 2026 this will be the Warrnambool Men’s Shed,” Peter said. “The BMX club will have a barbecue running each night and there will also be a coffee van on site. “These fun runs have been held at Flagstaff Hill for over a decade but we’re confident this new location will be appreciated and we look forward to welcoming runners, walkers and supporters of all ages and abilities.”

Retirement beckons popular Maremma MUCH-loved Maremma is well suited to undertake both an ambassador role while dog Amor is retiring. Part of the renowned Middle Island Maremma Penguin Project, Amor was appointed as the project’s first ever ambassador dog. This role saw him meet thousands of people from around the world at regular education sessions and at special events. Amor was named after conservationist John Amor, who was an instrumental figure in establishing the Middle Island Maremma Penguin Project. Middle Island Project Officer Nikita Dubberley said that at age 10, Amor was beginning to slow down. “After 10 years of helping to spread our important conservation message, Amor is ready for retirement,” she said. “As an ambassador dog, he really was the face of the project. “When film crews came to capture the story of the penguins and the Maremmas, they almost always filmed Amor first, so his face has ended up on screens all over the world. “It’s a role that he was made for. He just loves people. He’s just such a big softie.” Amor will continue to live with fellow project Maremmas Avis, Mezzo, Isola and Oberon. “Amor will spend his days at the farm with the other Maremmas, where he’s very much still a part of their little family,” Ms Dubberley said. “Isola will step up and assist Avis in the ambassador role. Isola is an amazing dog and

maintaining her status as a working dog on Middle Island, where she helps to protect the penguin colony and other nesting seabirds.” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the strong public interest in the project showed how widely its message had spread. “While it was well-known locally, with the release of Oddball in 2015, interest in the Middle Island project really took off,” he said. “The Penguin Protectors Warrnambool sessions have introduced thousands of people to the science, the dogs and the true story behind the movie. “Everyone who comes along walks away with a deeper understanding of the project, and they tend to share that knowledge with others, becoming ambassadors just like Amor. “Amor has done so much for the project, he’s a wonderful dog and I hope he enjoys a comfortable retirement. “And as summer approaches, please help protect Middle Island and remind any visitors that it’s illegal to go there. If you see anyone on the island, please contact the Warrnambool police station.” To find out about the Middle Island Maremma Penguin Project and to book in for a Penguin Protectors Warrnambool session visit www.warrnamboolpenguins. com.au

Markets signal summer in Warrnie FOR many locals and visitors to the region, the start of the Christmas markets on the Civic Green and Lake Pertobe signal the start of summer.

The Christmas market scene kicked off on the Civic Green on Sunday, November 30 and will also run on Sunday, December 7, December 14 and December 21. The markets will be open from 9am through until 1pm, offering marketgoers the chance to seek out that unique gift and find those hardto-get delicious Christmas foods. There are over 60 stalls each week, filled with micro businesses run by the most talented and creative stallholders who are mainly locals. Visitors can grab a bite to eat from the fabulous food trucks, enjoy a hot coffee and browse the stalls. Like the markets on the Civic Green, the summer night markets at Lake Pertobe also attract large crowds throughout the season. This year the summer night markets will commence on Saturday, December 27 (due to Boxing Day falling on a Friday this year). They will then continue to be held on Friday’s throughout January- with markets scheduled for January 2, 9, 16 and 23. The markets will run from 4.30pm until 8.30pm, again taking full advantage of the extended daylight hours. These markets have been running (and growing) for 26 years and organisers believe they are the most sought-after market events in the district. It is said every year that these

markets are high up on the list of “highlights” for many holidaymakers to Warrnambool over summer. Here you will find amazing market stalls, super talented local live music on two stages, and a delicious variety of foods and boutique beverages. These markets are free events for locals and visitors to attend, and offer something the whole family can enjoy. Organisers say crowds have continued to grow over the years, with feedback such as “it’s a vibe” and “the markets are amazing in terms of variety of quality,” showcasing all that Warrnambool has to offer. Friends and family often make the Laker Pertobe precinct, which incorporate a wonderful children’s playground, barbecue and toilet facilities, a gathering place. Market visitors can wander the stalls, throw a rug on the grass, try the tasty foods on offer, and enjoy a catch up while listening to the music. A number of community groups also take the opportunity to join the market to raise funds and awareness of various projects. What was originally an idea for a beach market and something that would potentially be magical for the city, has certainly proven to be just that. The summer markets’ first season was held in the carpark of what was then the Yacht Club (now home to the Pavilion Café) however it quickly outgrew that space. Warrnambool City Council then offered Lake Pertobe as a possible venue – and the markets continue to flourish.

Note the Irish Festival on your calendar WHEN it comes to ‘all things Irish’ the Koroit Irish Festival is an event not to be missed. This annual event has become a huge drawcard for the town, with thousands flocking to Koroit each year to enjoy the wide range of entertainment and activities for all ages. Many people who visit the western district over the busy Christmas/New Year period ensure they mark the festival date on their calendars for a return visit. The 2026 Koroit Irish Festival once again looks set to be jam-packed, with organisers working hard to ensure a quality program with something for everyone. Local legend Barry Brody has been named the 2026 Koroit Irish Festival Ambassador. According to the festival committee, Barry is the “ideal fit” for the role – and anyone who has ever been to the festival, or visited the town of Koroit, chances are they would have seen him “flying around getting things done.” Barry is a life-long Koroit resident and a man with an unmatched passion for the town and the festival. Barry has been a volunteer with the festival from its inception in 1997, and has been on the committee since 2010. And when it comes to his Irish credentials, Barry also has that covered. His parents came from County Clare to Koroit, with Barry one of 15 children. His real name is Kevin Barry Brody, named after the great Irish rebel Kevin Barry. And like his Irish forefathers, Barry is a spud man, spending much of his

Swim between the flags this summer VISITORS to Warrnambool’s beaches are being urged to swim between the flags this summer to avoid becoming a statistic. This annual event has become a huge drawcard for the town, with thousands flocking to Koroit each year to enjoy the wide range of entertainment and activities for all ages. Many people who visit the western district over the busy Christmas/New Year period ensure they mark the festival date on their calendars for a return visit. The With the launch of Victoria’s volunteer lifesavers and lifeguards summer season in mid-November, the familiar red and yellow flags are now being raised for this critical patrol season. The 2024-2025 Drowning Report, released by Life Saving Victoria, recorded a total of 52 fatal and 123 non-fatal drowning incidents during the last financial year, above the 10-year averages for both figures. A substantial increase in drownings over autumn was recorded with 14 deaths between March and May, the highest number in 12 years and 49 per cent higher than the decade average. This mirrors the large number of incidents observed over spring this year when 12 deaths were recorded between September and November, the highest number since 2001. Summer consistently records the highest number of drownings of any season, with 23 incidents over the 202425 period. This points to hotter and longer summer weather stretching into traditionally cooler months, and more people visiting beaches and waterways over this time. The report also found drowning deaths among 15 to 24-year-olds were 27 per cent above the 10-year average. People aged 65 and older had the highest drowning rate of any age group, with 1.03 deaths per 100,000 people. This compares to .75 drowning deaths for the overall population. More than a third of drowning fatalities (37 per cent) between 2015 and 2025 involved people from multicultural backgrounds. This figure is likely conservative given country of birth is unknown among 22 per cent of incidents. Life Saving Victoria’s manager research and evaluation Dr Hannah Graefe said a whole-of-community response was required to bring about a sustained reduction in drowning incidents. ““Fifty-two people lost their lives to drowning in the 2024-25 financial year, and a further 123 people experienced a non-fatal drowning incident that can have

lifelong impacts on those involved,” Dr. Graefe said. “These figures are both above their respective 10-year averages, pointing to a concerning upward trend in drowning incidents across the state. “We must all work together as a community to bring these numbers down.” The drowning report is released every year to provide information and insights to help LSV, its partners and policymakers target the underlying factors behind drownings and reduce incidents and fatalities. In light of these alarming statistics, Life Saving Victoria is highlighting an urgent need for water safety awareness, as Victoria faces a critical challenge to reduce these tragic losses. When heading to the beach make sure you take notice of where the red and yellow flags are flying – and swim between those.

Test your skills in a dragon boat HAVE you ever been keen to join a dragon boat club, or at least sit in a boat on the water and have a go? The Warrnambool Dragon Boat Club (South C Dragons) was established in 2012 by a group of breast cancer survivors and friends - and has since evolved into an all-inclusive club which aims to develop and encourage dragon boating for anyone over the age of 18. Dragon boating is an enjoyable sport for fun and fitness at both social and competitive levels. The South C Dragons offers a special ‘Dragon Pass’ that allows the holder to take part in four free ‘come and try’ paddling sessions on the Hopkins River. During each session the club will provide instruction from qualified coaches as well as all safety equipment. The first ‘come and try’ day for 2026 will be held on Saturday, January 3. The club has recently purchased a second boat; providing double the fun! Weather permitting, club members paddle each Friday and Saturday from 7.45am and Tuesday evenings from 6pm. To take part simply meet at the boat shed (34 Simpson Street) on the Hopkins River. For more information phone the president on 0427 659 796. Pontoon allows easy access to river WITH the warmer weather now here, this is the perfect time to enjoy water activities. Warrnambool’s Merri River has long been a popular spot for kayak enthusiasts to spend some time on the water. And getting on the river could not be simpler – just head to the kayak pontoon on Woodend Road. The floating pontoon was officially opened to the public in 2023. It has all-ability access which provides (for people of limited mobility and wheelchair users) easy access to the waterway for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other recreational activities. The pontoon was installed in 2023 by Warrnambool City Council through the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Merri Connections Projects, which was funded by the state government through the Recreational Water Values Program. The $400,000 funding also supported enhanced pedestrian access to the Merri River through the construction of all-weather walking tracks and seating on top of the floating pontoon. The launch facility was a recommendation from the South of Merri Precinct Plan, which aimed to create a more connected neighbourhood where the local environment could be both enjoyed and protected. Kayaking is an excellent example of an activity that is a lot of fun, is great exercise and also fosters an appreciation the water, especially for people who in hand with the ramp, the footpaths and for the river and the natural environment. have mobility challenges. the car parking to make an activity like However, sometimes the hardest part The sit and launch kayak facility plays a kayaking accessible for more people. about kayaking is getting in and out of big part in improving this and goes hand The support for the project came not
