Knit a little, care a lot
Mpower staff (from left) Shane Martin, Tracy McKendry and Kimberley Dempsey, with volunteer Jeanette Ruwoldt, are hoping the community will get behind their ‘Carers Connection Community Scarf’ project, celebrating the work and dedication of local carers. For the full story turn to page 4.
Pigeons help deliver appeal success THANKS to last weekend’s ‘The Great Australian Pigeon Race’ and the generosity of local donors, South West Healthcare (SWH) has reached its $115,000 fundraising target for a brand new prostate cancer detector system. This vital piece of equipment will benefit thousands of men across the district and beyond. Race organiser, SWH community partnerships manager Suzan Morey, thanked everyone involved – including the Warrnambool Racing Pigeon Club for the use of its members’ pigeons, along with race partner Beyond Bank, the Peter’s Project Foundation (which donated $30,000) and SWH Warrnambool and Woolsthorpe auxiliaries ($10,000 each) for their donations. “The race itself (ran from Lascelles to Warrnambool last weekend) raised $25,650 through business and private sponsorship of the birds,” Ms Morey said. “We also had four significant donations which saw the closing of the $115,000 appeal.” Prior to the race, donations were also received from the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East ($5,000), South Warrnambool Football Netball Club ($950), Warrnambool East Primary staff ($1,124) and the Kirky Cooks ($500). “This appeal is another example of how our wonderful community comes together to support compelling community needs,” Ms Morey said. “We can now start the procurement process for a brand new prostate cancer detector system for the men in our region; it’s a fabulous result.”

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the plan had been shaped by community input at various stages of its development. “Thank you to everyone who has shared their ideas and feedback to help get the plan to this point,” he said. “We had really good engagement from people, and I think that shows just how much the community values all of the things that make living in Woodford and Bushfield so special. “And that’s why this is such an important plan, because we want to make sure future growth happens in a way that protects what people value about the area.” Cr Blain said that before council

Shining the light on prostate cancer WARRNAMBOOL’S skyline is set to turn blue this month as South West Healthcare (SWH) joins forces with local organisations to shine a light on prostate cancer. The month-long campaign aims to encourage local men to start a conversation about their prostate health. The campaign, which began last Friday (August 28), will see the Fletcher Jones Silver Ball and the two tower cranes overlooking the almost $400 million Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment site, light up in blue. SWH prostate cancer specialist nurse Bridget Hill said the campaign was about making prostate cancer visible and encouraging men to take action. “Prostate health can be a difficult conversation for men to have, but it is a conversation worth having,” she said. “We want to create a visual reminder for men and their families to learn about prostate cancer, understand their risks and seek advice if they have concerns. “We want to get people talking – because starting the conversation is an important first step.” Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Australian men, with almost 29,000 Australian men expected to be diagnosed in 2026. Around 11 Australian men die from prostate cancer every day. The need for awareness is
particularly important in regional communities. Men living in regional and rural areas of Australia have an approximately 24 per cent higher rate of dying from prostate cancer than men living in urban areas. Locally, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in males in the Barwon South West region, while Warrnambool has a higher risk of prostate cancerrelated mortality than the Victorian average. SWH’s prostate cancer specialist nurse is funded by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and provides free support to men and their families affected by prostate cancer throughout south west Victoria. The service is available to anyone who would like information, support or advice about prostate cancer. Men and their families can selfrefer and do not need to wait for a referral from a doctor. “Whether you have questions about prostate cancer, have been diagnosed, are supporting someone who has been diagnosed, or simply want to understand more about your own risk, we encourage you to get in touch,” Ms Hill said. The campaign also coincided with last weekend’s The Great Australian Pigeon Race – a creative event between SWH and the Warrnambool Pigeon Racing Club to raise vital funds towards the purchase of a prostate cancer detector system for Warrnambool Base Hospital.
Andrea Janes (director of cancer services, South West Healthcare), Matt Smith (project manager, Hansen Yunken) and Bridget Hall (prostate cancer specialist nurse, South West Healthcare) are looking forward to seeing these cranes lit up in shades of blue.

Do your ‘knit’, show you care DO you enjoy knitting and would love to be a part of something special? As part of Carers Week 2026, Mpower is inviting carers, family members, friends and community members to contribute a knitted section to its ‘Carers Connection Community Scarf’ project. Every stitch celebrates a carer in our community so why not help create something symbolic? “We’re hoping to create a giant scarf and invite knitters of all ages and skill levels to participate,” carer support facilitator with Mpower Tracy McKendry said. “Together we’ll create one giant scarf that recognises and celebrates the many unpaid carers across south west Victoria. “Each knitted piece will represent the care, support and compassion carers provide every day.” Knitters can drop their completed scarf section (approx.. 15cm wide and of any length, colour, pattern or style) to Mpower – located at 71 Koroit Street, Warrnambool. All knitted contributions will be due by Wednesday, September 30. The completed scarf will be proudly displayed during Carers Week (October 11-18, 2026) to raise awareness of the invaluable role carers play in our community. For more information contact Tracy McKendry on 5561 8111 or email tmckendy@mpower.org.au
Tracy McKendry (Mpower) and volunteer Jeanette Ruwoldt are encouraging others in the community to pick up their knitting needles and join the community scarf project this month.

Cash flows for 18,000 new trees
ALMOST 18,000 new trees will be planted across Moyne Shire after council recently endorsed $55,000 in funding through its 2026/27 Council Community Carbon Offset Program (C3OP).
Two community organisations will share $2,990 through the public land component, while 17 private landholders will receive a combined $52,662 to establish indigenous vegetation plantings on their properties. The successful projects include revegetation works on both public and private land across communities including Panmure, Wangoom, Woolsthorpe, Nirranda, Koroit and Port Fairy. Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the program continued to deliver environmental benefits while empowering local communities to take practical climate action. “The projects supported this year are expected to capture the equivalent of approximately 3,587 tonnes of carbon dioxide over their lifespan, roughly the same as taking 780 cars off the road for a year,” he said. “This is a really simple but effective way council can work with the community to create positive and lasting benefits for our environment. “Beyond the environmental benefits, revegetation projects can improve farm resilience by providing shelter for stock, reducing erosion, improving soil health and boosting farm productivity.” Since the program began in 2010, more than 138,000 trees have been planted across public and private land throughout Moyne Shire, helping to improve biodiversity and create wildlife habitat. “This program has delivered significant benefits that will last for generations, and I’m proud that council continues to work
Moyne Shire Council has allocated $55,000 to plant close to 18,000 new trees across the municipality. alongside the community to deliver these projects,” Cr Lockett said. “Nelson Henderson said ‘The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit’. This program is the perfect reflection of that.”
Book sale this weekend BOOK lovers of all ages will find something to interest them at this weekend’s Rotary Warrnambool second-hand book sale.
The sale will run from 9am until 3pm tomorrow, Saturday, September 5, at AL Lane Pavilion in Hyland Street, Warrnambool. Hundreds of books will be available for
purchase, ranging from modern titles and books for collectors through to non-fiction topics, a large collection of classics and much more. Entry is via gold coin donation, with both cash and card welcome. Funds raised from the sale of books will go towards the Rotary club’s various local projects.
The Council Community Carbon Offset Program was established in 2010 to offset emissions from council’s light vehicle fleet through community tree planting projects. In 2021 it was expanded to include private land projects in response to council’s
climate emergency declaration. Council’s environmental sustainability strategy identifies the C3OP as a key action to offset vehicle emissions and support biodiversity outcomes across the municipality.

Liberals pledge six carriages, all services SIX carriage trains will become “the norm” across every Warrnambool service if the Liberals are elected to govern in November. Earlier this week Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell and Shadow Minister for Public Transport Matthew Guy met with locals at the Warrnambool station to say there would be “light at the end of the tunnel” for frustrated passengers. “We have a clear pathway to deliver six-carriage trains across every Warrnambool service, with five VLocity trains to be redeployed to the south west,” Ms Britnell said. The Liberals’ suburban train commitment for Melbourne’s western suburbs will free up 25 threecarriage VLocity trains, with five to be redeployed for use on the Warrnambool line. This will provide the additional rolling stock needed to ensure every Warrnambool service can operate as a six-carriage train, with the possibility of additional services to be considered. According to Ms Britnell, this week’s announcement builds on the Liberals’ commitment earlier this year to increase capacity on the Warrnambool line – and could now clearly identify the source for the additional trains. If elected in November, the Liberals have committed to immediately redeploy the current surplus stock to ensure the majority of the Warrnambool line will have six carriages, seven days a week. “For too long Labor has told us this can’t be done. We kept pushing because south west passengers deserve better than being told to simply put up with overcrowded trains. “Five additional VLocity trains for the Warrnambool line means we can deliver six-carriage trains across every service and finally give south west passengers the capacity they deserve.” Shadow Minister for Transport Matthew Guy said Warrnambool line passengers deserve increased capacity and reliability. “We’re offering more capacity, better services and a

Like many others, Warrnambool’s Bob McMillan regularly catches the train to and from Melbourne for medical appointments and said he welcomed this latest announcement. “A lot of friends my age also travel on the train regularly, some needing to go to Melbourne for cancer treatment,
and they need to be able to sit down,” Mr McMillan. “Expecting people, especially those our age, to stand for hours on a train is just not possible; it’s imperative they have a seat. “We would also like to see the return of the café on one of the carriages. Now that we have this pledge of more seats, let’s hope the café is next.”

The council delivered $24.5 million in capital works while continuing to invest in community services and infrastructure. The surplus result was boosted by the early receipt of $9.9 million in Commonwealth Financial Assistance Grant funding for the 2026-27 financial year. While the operating surplus reflects all income received during the year, including the early grant payment, council’s underlying financial performance also remained positive, with an underlying surplus of $3.40 million. The underlying result removes capitalrelated items such as capital grants, capital contributions and asset disposals to provide a clearer picture of council’s day-to-day operating performance. Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said strong financial management allowed council to continue delivering services and investing in infrastructure. “Strong financial management is about more than balancing the books. It gives council the capacity to plan for the future, respond to community needs and continue advocating for investment in Moyne Shire,” he said.
“During the year we delivered almost $25 million in capital works, maintained essential community services including early years, waste management, aged care and libraries, while investing in the facilities and infrastructure that make our towns stronger, more connected and more livable. “By maintaining a sustainable financial position, we’re better placed to secure external funding and ensure local ratepayers receive the greatest possible return on every dollar council invests.” Council’s cash and investment holdings totalled $22.9 million as at June 30, 2026, while capital expenditure reached $24.5 million, representing 88 per cent of the annual capital works program. Several major projects will continue into the current financial year, including the Gipps Street Bridge (Port Fairy) replacement and the Koroit Township Renewal Project. Cr Lockett said maintaining a strong financial position also strengthened council’s ability to advocate for funding and investment opportunities. “Every dollar we attract from other levels of government helps deliver projects and services that would otherwise place greater pressure on local ratepayers,” he said. “Our focus remains on making every dollar count, delivering community priorities and ensuring Moyne Shire is well positioned for the future.”

Remembering those lost and still missing CANDLES glowed in the darkness of the Civic Green on Wednesday night as crowds gathered to pay their respects and remember those lost and still missing following the devastating floods in Nepal. As rescue efforts continue across the flood-ravaged areas of Nepal and China, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported on Tuesday that 987 deaths had been counted in the country, with almost 4000 people still missing, including over 580 foreigners. President of the Warrnambool Nepalese Community Deepesh Baskota this week spoke of the heartbreak felt by so many in the community, and expressed his gratitude to the wider Warrnambool community for its support. “We may be thousands of kilometres away from Nepal but tonight we stand together as one to remember those who have lost their lives, those who are still missing and families who have been torn apart,” he said at Wednesday night’s vigil. “Thank you all for standing together with us tonight. We are showing that compassion has no distance, no culture and no religion. We may be here in Warrnambool but our hearts and our families are in Nepal.” Deepesh and his wife, Nikita Pokharel, came to Warrnambool from Kathmandu in 2013 and have since welcomed two children (now aged five and two). “We love living in Warrnambool and we

Fifty years of tools, trust and tradition VERY few small businesses can lay claim to surviving 50 years of trade, but Port Fairy’s very own Home Hardware store is next week celebrating that special milestone.
This locally owned and operated business has truly stood the test of time, not only providing employment for local staff but also giving back to the local community that has shown its loyalty over many years. “We are very grateful to the many tradies who continue to support us, and to all our loyal customers who have not only become repeat customers but also friends over many years,” current business partner Julie Mischkulnig said. “This business really has become entrenched in the town, and we are proud to be able to give back to those who support us, including local schools, sporting clubs and community groups.” The Brookes Hardware story began back in 1976 when Ken and June Brookes, along with Ken’s brother Owen and their father Colin, purchased what was then known as ‘Brown’s’ at 39 Bank Street. Seven years later the Brookes family purchased McLean’s Home Furnishings in Sackville Street (numbers 61-63) and over the following few years also bought the stores located at numbers 57 and 59.
History showed the family undertook a major renovation at the sites in 1993, filling in the driveway between 59 and 61 Sackville Street and creating a new front entry doorway – which is still the one used today. “In October 2021 Ken and June retired and sold the business and buildings to the Pausewang Family Group (of which I am a part),” Julie said. “This business truly is steeped in history and we felt it was important to recognise and celebrate its 50th year. “This is our chance to not only honour the past but also recognise and say thanks to all our local tradies, businesses, community groups and families who have shown their support throughout the last 50 years. “In times when so many small businesses are struggling, or closing their doors, we’re proud to have stood the test of time – and we’re looking forward to many more years of serving the Port Fairy community and beyond.” As part of the birthday celebrations, members of the local Lions club will cook up a storm on the barbecue from 11am-1.30pm next Wednesday (September 9) alongside a CoastFM radio broadcast and supplier demo’s. There will also be loads of great specials in-store from Wednesday through to Saturday and all customers who spend $50 or more will go in the draw for the chance to win a brand new 58cm TV.
The original Browns Hardware business/building (purchased by Ken and June Brookes in 1976) was located on the corner of Bank and James streets.
The front of the shop, including the infilled driveway that joined the two shops of the original hardware store (in Sackville Street, closest to the library). The laneway infill building works were carried out in 1993.

Warrnambool Helping Hands manager Deidre Bidmade hosted 27 carers and staff for an afternoon of conversation, good cheer and a delicious afternoon tea. The event recognised the dedication and compassion of those who provide care to elderly people throughout the Warrnambool district. Ms Bidmade praised the team for the skilled and dedicated in-home care they provide to clients, applauding all employees for the dedication, compassion and kindness they demonstrate every day. Carer Gerard Bourke spoke about the gratification and fulfillment employees experience from making a positive difference in the lives of their clients. “With the support of Deidre, we are all so proud to work for Warrnambool Helping Hands and to bring a smile to our clients through the assistance and care we provide each day,” he said. The high tea provided an opportunity for staff to celebrate Aged Care Employee Day, by coming together to reflect on the importance of their work within the community.

Labor announces South West Coast candidate ANDREW Govanstone is hoping to win the seat of South West Coast at the November election. A Portland local, Andrew is the Labor candidate for South West Coast. “I grew up in Ballarat, spent 10 years living in and studying horticultural science in Melbourne and have now lived in Portland for the past 35 years,” Andrew said. “My wife Tilley and I have two daughters and with a family of my own I know how important the cost of living relief for families and individuals really is.” Andrew believes every regional community deserves access to quality education, secure jobs and the services families rely on. For decades Andrew has helped communities work together to protect the places they love while creating new opportunities for the future. He played an integral role in helping bring together government agencies and Traditional Owners to restore Lake Condah, which paved the way for Budj Bim to become a world heritage-listed cultural landscape. Andrew sees renewable energy as an opportunity to create local jobs, lower energy costs and strengthen the south west economy. “I truly believe Labor builds communities and provides the settings for people to achieve their potential through education and training,” he said. “Cost of living relief, better roads and building strong communities are all high on my priority list.” If elected in November, Andrew said his immediate thoughts will turn to continuing to advocate with the Minister for Health for a PET scanner for Warrnambool Base Hospital and to complete the hospital redevelopment “in a timely manner.” “Improving the condition of our main roads, including key feeder roads to the Port of Portland which carries increasingly heavier loads, with increasing traffic volumes, will also be a priority,” he said. “It is my hope that when people walk into the voting booth late November they are making an informed vote, in consideration of policies and principals rather than a protest ‘I’ve had a gut full’ reaction.” Labor candidate for South West Coast, Andrew Govanstone.
Push for pathways continues CONNECTING Warrnambool members are now exploring what they believe may be an “achievable” first stage of a future walking and cycling connection north of Warrnambool.
that a nature-based pathway following parts of the Merri River and surrounding countryside may have potential in the next few years. “It would not initially extend all the way to Bushfield or Woodford, but it could provide a meaningful beginning for North Warrnambool residents According to group leader Elise and create a foundation for future McKinnon, early discussions indicate connections,” Ms McKinnon said. “Any pathway would remain subject to
landholder agreement, environmental assessment, planning, engineering and funding. “However, a number of landholders, environmental organisations and community members have already expressed an interest in helping investigate what may be possible.” A dedicated community engagement process will follow as this work develops.
“Connecting Warrnambool would particularly welcome hearing from North Warrnambool residents interested in helping create a lasting network of active pathways, nature connections and recreational places for local children, families and future generations.” Further information is available on the group’s Facebook page @ connectingwarrnambool

Orlando ready to hit the stage Adapted for the stage by Neil Bartlett from the celebrated novel by Virginia Woolf, and first performed in London’s West End in 2022 (starring Emma Corrin), Orlando begins in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Orlando’s extraordinary journey travels through wars, revolutions, romance, and social change, crossing boundaries of time, gender, and identity along the way. Playful and poetic, Orlando searches for freedom to be at home in their own life, a story that remains as daring and relevant today as when Woolf first imagined it and continues to resonate with audiences nearly a century later. “Orlando was published in 1928, but questions of ‘who am I?’ are just as relevant to audiences now as they were back then,” Warren Easley, director of the production and Warrnambool Theatre Company vice-president said. “What makes the adaptation so
interesting is that Neil Bartlett has included the character of Virginia Woolf herself on stage, writing the novel and transforming into all of the characters that her story puts in Orlando’s way, splitting off from the chorus, getting dressed up and playing all of the various other people who Woolf-asauthor throws into her creation’s path.” Penny McLeod is Warrnambool heatre Company president and producer of Orlando. “We are so excited to bring thought provoking theatre to Warrnambool,” she said. “This story was based on real life experiences of Virginia Woolf and her great love, Vita Sackville West, who was the inspiration for the character of Orlando and who the book was dedicated to.” Dean Field is a producer and vicetreasurer of the company. “You hear Virginia Woolf and expect serious literature but this script is funny,” he said. “In her diary in 1935 Virginia Woolf said Orlando was meant to be “half laughing, half serious: with great
splashes of exaggeration” and Neil Bartlett has really turned the dial up on the humour.” The production, proudly supported by the Warrnambool City Council’s community development fund, showcases a talented local cast and creative team who have worked together to bring the world of Orlando, from Tudor England to Constantinople and all the way through to 2026, to life through clever staging and bold costuming. The roles of Orlando and Mrs Grimsditch are performed by a double cast. Rachel Pitt-Lancaster and Kate Head will perform on Saturday, September 12, Thursday September 17 and a matinee on Saturday September 19. Dusk Baulch and Angela Verspay will perform on Sunday, September 13, Friday September 18 and an evening performance on Saturday, September 19. Valuable discussion on election process PARTICIPANTS at last week’s South West Regional Advocacy Network meeting had the opportunity to learn more about the Victorian Electoral Commission’s democracy ambassador program. The network meeting, held at Warrnambool’s Reid Oval last Wednesday, was hosted by the Self-Advocates Connected group. The Regional Advocacy Network is made up of participants from disability service providers Cooinda, Mulleraterong, Kyeema and Southern Stay, along with members of Self-Advocates Connected. The meeting included a presentation by a representative from the Victorian Electoral Commission’s (VEC) Democracy Ambassador program who educated participants about who can vote, how to enrol to vote, how to vote correctly and where to get help to vote. The VEC’s Democracy Ambassador program supports voters, who are under-represented at the ballot box, to learn how to make their vote count, including at the upcoming state election in November and at local council elections. This includes people with intellectual disabilities and those who have neurodevelopmental conditions like autism. Meeting participants also learnt about the low-sensory voting centres the VEC is rolling out in every Victorian electorate. Selected venues, including the Archie Graham Community Centre in Warrnambool, will be quieter, with a controlled temperature, extra space around voting booths and natural lighting to address barriers that make in-person voting overwhelming or inaccessible for neurodivergent voters. The presentation was followed by South West Regional Advocacy Network’s quarterly meeting. Participants shared their news on all the wonderful projects they are working on including the successes and achievements since the last meeting in May. If you have an intellectual disability or acquired brain injury and are interested in joining Self Advocates Connected (or are from an organisation that works with people with intellectual disabilities and are interested in joining) contact project coordinator Rachael Gleeson on 0493 214 996 or email rachael@selfadvocatesconnected.org.au
Participants at last week’s South West Regional Advocacy Network meeting enjoyed learning more about the voting process.

It was a very mixed quality yarding of cattle particularly in the trade offering. The bullock offering included some good heavy weights however, there were fewer supplementary fed cattle on offer reflecting a typical winter yarding. Cows accounted for almost half of the yarding. The cow offering comprised 42% beef cows with the balance being dairy bred. Most regular buyers were in attendance although not all were fully active. There was still good feeder activity on the yarding which included 143 bullocks, 343 trade cattle, 505 cows and 71 grown bulls. Despite the mixed quality, the market was generally stronger. Trade cattle and bullocks were dearer by 10 to 20c/kg in places.

Prelim final venue change THE Warrnambool and District Football Netball League preliminary final this Saturday, September 5 will now be held at Davidson Oval. The decision to move the preliminary final from Reid Oval was made late last week following discussions between council and the league. “This is the right decision for the league and will help ensure Reid Oval is in the best possible condition for our WDFNL grand final,” league president Larissa Barclay said. “We know it has been a challenging season weatherwise, and the wet conditions have made it difficult for grounds to recover. “The decision to move the preliminary final allows council to undertake the necessary maintenance works at Reid Oval ahead of grand final day.” Ms Barclay said the league was looking forward to a great preliminary final at Davidson Oval and to continuing what has been a fantastic finals series so far. “I encourage everyone to
get along, support their clubs and enjoy what is shaping up to be a fantastic finals series.” Warrnambool City Council chief executive Andrew Mason said the announcement meets a joint commitment made with the leagues earlier this month to share any plans around the scheduling of finals. “This is a sensible move and I acknowledge the support of the WDFNL,” Mr Mason said. “Council curators are continuing the ground maintenance program at Reid Oval and that includes aeration, over-sowing, fertilising and top dressing of low-lying areas. “We want to improve turf health, surface consistency, and provide the highest quality playing surface possible for the upcoming finals. “These proactive measures will help ensure the ground is in peak condition for players, officials and spectators at both grand finals.” This year rain was recorded on 48 of 61 days across June and July, including almost every game day which gave grounds little time to recover.
In A reserve, Merrivale had a 30-29 win over Allansford in the second semi-final, with the first semi-final going the way of Nirranda who had a 37-26 win over Russells Creek. Merrivale is through to the decider, with Allansford set to meet Nirranda in this Saturday’s preliminary final. In B grade, the second semi saw Merrivale defeat Allansford 33-30, with the first semi-final going the way of Nirranda who had a 43-24 win over South Rovers. With Merrivale through to the grand final, Allansford and Nirranda will meet in this week’s preliminary final. The 17 and under second semi-final saw a 36-35 win to Old Collegians over Allansford, with Russells Creek having a 25-17 win over Timboon. Allansford and Russells Creek will play in the preliminary final, with Old Collegians through to the grand final. Timboon is through to the grand final in the 15 and under competition after a 44-29 second semi-final win over Russells Creek, with Dennington scoring a 29-28 win over Allansford in the first semi-final. Russells Creek will pay Dennington this week for the right to play Timboon in the grand final. In the 13 and under second semi, Timboon scored a 29-22 win over Merrivale, with Dennington having a strong 43-16 win over Russells Creek in the first semi.
