Young artists on show

THE artistic talents of young people across the district is now on show at Warrnambool’s F Project.

The ‘Artolescence’ exhibition will no doubt attract widespread interest from across the community.

Victorian Minister for Youth, Natalie Suleyman MP, paid a special visit to Warrnambool this week, calling in on the exhibition on Wednesday morning.

During her visit, Ms Suleyman also had the opportunity to meet with a number of the young artists. The exhibition was officially opened this week and showcases the creativity of young people from local secondary schools.

It is curated by the students themselves, in conjunction with the youth department of The F Project.

‘Artolescence’ is one of 12 events taking place as part of South West Youth Fest – the local branch of the wider Victorian Youth Fest. South West Youth Fest features events and opportunities for young people as well as events brought to the whole community by young people.

Multicultural festival returns

THE Civic Green will come alive with all the colours, smells and tastes of a wide range of nationalities next month.

The Warrnambool Multicultural Festival will make a welcome return on Saturday October 14 thanks to the efforts of a group of dedicated local volunteers.

The event, which took out the 2022-23 Warrnambool City Council Community Event of the Year, will once again feature a wide range of music, food, activities and entertainment.

President of the Warrnambool Multicultural Association Daisy Ye and fellow volunteer Wei-Lin Mai are confident this year’s event will be “even bigger and better” than the inaugural one, held last year.

“We had lots of positive feedback last year and that really encouraged us to make sure it (the festival) ran again,” Daisy said.

“We are a not-for-profit organisation and we are all volunteers who put in endless hours to organise and ensure the event is a success.

“We are very grateful to our team of workers and would welcome more volunteers, particularly those who can help on the day with collecting feedback from those who attend.”

Following on from the success of last year’s event, the 2023 celebration will again highlight and promote many different cultures including Mexican, Sri Lankan, Thai, Dutch, Korean and First Nations to name just a few.

The lush lawns of the Civic Green will again be covered in a variety of food vendors, offering many wonderful dishes and treats for all ages to taste, experience and enjoy.

“When we first opened for expressions of interest in July we had over 100 submissions, some from as far away as Geelong and interstate,” Daisy said.

“We have managed to cut that back to 27 (confirmed) because the Civic Green isn’t overly large and we also need room for our entertainers and for people to sit and enjoy.”

Along with the food on offer, the entertainment will also be varied and exciting, including such popular acts as the Coco Blokes, the Warrnambool

Pipe Band, St Brigid’s Irish music, Thai Temple dancers and some young Chinese performers.

There will also be art and craft stalls, information stalls and free activity stalls including face painting.

“We have plenty of entertainment, plenty of food (and drink) vendors and now we just need some more volunteers to help us on the day, particularly with collecting feedback from visitors,” Daisy said.

Daisy and Wei-Lin also welcomed anyone who wished to join the Warrnambool Multicultural Association committee.

“Along with Wei-Lin and I, we also have Oksana Yakushchenko, Kerrie Nicholson, Jasmin Senchenko and Belinda Payne (aboriginal cultural engagement consultant) on our committee and we would love to hear from anyone else eager to volunteer.”

The committee is grateful for the support of the Fletcher Jones Foundation, Warrnambool City

Free session for young drivers

A FREE session for local young drivers, to be held next Monday, aims to help give them new skills and keep them safe on our roads. The informative, hands-on session will be held at the Warrnambool airport from 8.30am-4pm.

Moyne Shire mayor Karen Foster said the FUSE South West program of free training courses and hands-on experiences was a positive initiative that responds to what young people are saying they want and need.

“We know there are many young drivers who would love to learn skills that will keep them safe on our roads,” Cr Foster said.

For more information and to book a spot for next Monday go to www.moyne. vic.gov.au/fuse

The session will be run by Murcott’s Driving Excellence and will feature defensive driving skills, incorporating learning through practical in-car experiences as well as safe vehicle use and driving strategies.

Prehistoric fun

GATEWAY Plaza is the place to be for school children of all ages these holidays.

Throughout this week the plaza is home to a very special exhibition from Museums Victoria.

Offering something new and exciting each day – with activities ranging from colouring and making Triceratops masks through to learning about oceans, shells, sharks and ancient marine animals that lived millions years ago – this display is one not to be missed.

Today (Friday) visitors can look at an Australian animal taxidermy collection and make their own knob-tailed gecko climber to take home.

Museums Victoria outreach learning facilitator Josh WilsonDouglas said he and his team were thrilled with the number of visitors to the interactive display.

Speaking to the Warrnambool Weekly on Monday afternoon, Mr Wilson-Douglas said visitor numbers had already exceeded expectations.

“We’ve already had 350 people come through this morning and the line-up continues,” he said.

“It’s certainly bigger than we anticipated which is great; the children (and adults) are asking lots of questions and really enjoying the activities we have on offer.”

And for those looking for some fun and colour, make sure you head to Gateway Plaza next week to take part in a face painting workshop.

These will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday, September 26 and 27.

The Colour Angel will hold two sessions daily, however bookings are essential and can be made by emailing info.gatewayplaza@cbre. com.

The perfect pinic spot Spotlight on Koroit

AS the weather begins to improve and the days get longer our thoughts turn to spending more time outdoors.

Koroit’s heritage-listed Botanic Gardens is a wonderful place to stroll, explore and enjoy a picnic with family and friends.

The garden is one of the earliest provincial botanic gardens in Victoria and features more than 100 rare and unusual trees from around the world.

In 1857 the district surveyor, Thomas Watson, provided a 20-acre allotment for public gardens in Koroit immediately south of the National School reserve.

In 1873 the site was permanently reserved as a public gardens and recreation area.

The northern portion, Victoria Park, was used in the 1870s for sporting events and the south west section became a cricket ground from about 1873 - and is now known as the Jack Keane Oval.

Famed garden designer William Guilfoyle prepared a plan for the area in 1880, which covered about 12 acres of the southern part of the reserve.

The 1880 Guilfoyle plan, drawn by Robert Whitworth, is a rare surviving 19th century landscape plan and the gardens is substantially intact to the 1880s plan today.

A stroll around the gardens will uncovered seven

trees which are listed on the National Trust Register of Significant Trees, including a Rapanea Howittiana and Dracaena Draco which is included on the world’s rare and endangered list.

With so much to see, explore and discover, make sure you head to the gardens these school holidays.

Audiences taken on magical tour

AUDIENCES were taken on a colourful trip around Australia during Warrnambool West Primary School’s (WWPS) end-ofterm concert.

The concert, held at Brauer Secondary College’s Anderson Theatre last Thursday, attracted a packed house.

Students from all year levels combined to showcase their talents on stage, boarding the WWPS Magic School Bus and heading off for adventures across the country.

The evening began with many of the school’s Koorie students captivating the audience with a traditional indigenous dance.

Each class performed an item consisting of dancing, instruments, singing and plenty of colour and movement.

Old classics from ‘Home Among the Gumtrees’ to more modern day rock songs such as Wolfmother’s ‘Joker and the Thief’ entertained the audience.

The whole school then performed John Farnham’s ‘You’re the Voice’ in Auslan, led by the school’s Auslan specialist and classroom teacher, Geraldine Mitchell.

WWPS parent Jenelle McColl and son Hamish wore traditional Scottish clothing to accompany the students with a drum and bagpipes.

Staff completed the show with a surprise ‘Nutbush’ dance and were soon joined by 130 students on stage.

The student’s Australian art decorated the foyer and entrance to the theatre to help set the scene.

Visual arts specialist, classroom teacher and concert organiser Renae Blake was immensely grateful for all staff’s efforts leading up to the big night.

“I couldn’t be any prouder of each student’s confidence and their love of performing on stage which shone throughout the evening,” Ms Blake said.

“Congratulations to all our wonderful performers and many thanks to the Warrnambool West community for its support of the evening.”

Year 3/4E students travel onto the stage for their item, ‘Home Among the Gumtrees.’ 2023E

Lions to celebrate 50 years

BOTH the Koroit and Macarthur Lions clubs celebrate their golden anniversaries this year.

Koroit will host an anniversary dinner on February 24, 2024. Both clubs are eager to hear from previous Lions members or their families who would like to help share the memories and friendships resulting from 50 years of valued service to their communities.

Koroit Lions have a busy schedule over the next few months.

In addition to the pending opening of their barbecue and shelter at the railway precinct, they will hold their annual art show in November and their op shop operation involves 400-500 volunteer hours a month from both Lions and non-Lion volunteers.

Another very special occasion for the club will be hosting the visit of the Lexus Melbourne Cup on October 6 for which they are organising a happy, festive occasion for their community and district.

Port Fairy-Belfast Lions Club will also host a special occasion on October 24 when it provides a luncheon for the Classic Triumph Car teams.

It is anticipated 50 plus cars will tour their town and district, spending the morning in Port Fairy before moving on to Warrnambool for an organised show.

The horrific earthquake that devastated Morocco, killing 2000 and injuring 2000 more, has resulted in many clubs accepting donations, with the Lions Club International Foundation providing a $100,000 major catastrophe grant and a $10,000 emergency grant as immediate aid to the affected areas.

The International Foundation and our own Australian Lions Foundation are renowned for their immediate response to disasters and emergencies in both providing financial and physical assistance.

Every cent raised by those foundations is directed to the emergency areas for which they were donated.

starts on underground basins

WARRNAMBOOL motorists should take extra care when travelling in and around Japan Street as work beings on installing two underground basins.

The two basins, with a combined capacity greater than the indoor pool at AquaZone, will be installed over the next two months to help alleviate flooding in the area.

During a storm, the basins will catch and retain up to 960,000 litres of water before slowly releasing it into the drainage system – a move that aims to reduce incidents of flash flooding.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said the low-lying nature of the area meant that flooding would always be a risk, but the new project aimed to reduce its impact as much as possible.

“A similar system, although on a smaller scale, was installed in Gibson Street recently and is working well,” she said.

“Where you have a one in two year, or a one in five-year rain event that often led to flooding in Japan Street, these are the events we expect

this system to be most beneficial with.

“As part of the same project, we have installed new drainage pits in the area to help get more stormwater into the basins more efficiently during heavy rain and this will limit the amount of water entering the nearby holiday park and neighbouring properties.”

Japan Street will be closed between Koroit Street and Williams Lane from last Monday, September 18, for about four weeks while the first basin is installed.

Once this is finished, Japan Street will then close between Williams Lane and Barkly Street while the second basin is installed, again with the closure expected to be for four weeks. Access to properties will be maintained.

At its June meeting council awarded the tender to Duggan Civil for $936,977.

The project utilises $850,000 in Australian Government funding via the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, with the balance to come from council’s drainage fund.

Fox baiting program to start

PET owners are urged to familiarise themselves with prohibited areas as the Warrnambool City Council prepares for its spring fox baiting program.

The program will run from September 26 until October 24.

Bait will be laid along Pickering Point, in vegetation behind the skate park, in areas of Lake Pertobe and west of Thunder Point.

A detailed map is available on council’s website while hard copies were also mailed to residents in the vicinity of the baited areas (and are also available at the Civic Centre in Liebig Street).

Warrnambool City Council director city infrastructure

David Leahy said baiting was a proven method of reducing fox numbers.

“We have been undertaking fox baiting in spring for a few years now, and this year was the first time we introduced a second baiting program in May,” he said.

“Each fox can carry out a huge amount of damage to native birds and animals on its own, and while foxes will always be a threat to native wildlife in this part of Australia, every fox we can remove from the environment is a very good thing.

“Bait will be buried to make it attractive to foraging carnivores like foxes, while protecting birds, and each piece will be mapped using GPS so that our staff can remove all of the unused bait at the end of the program.”

According to Mr Leahy, the bait used is called PAPP, which is considered more humane than the most common alternative, which is 1080.

The other advantage of PAPP is the risk of secondary poisoning, that is, a bird or animal foraging on the carcass of a dead fox and getting poisoned itself, is practically non-existent.

“The other key advantage of PAPP is that there is an antidote that can be administered if a non-target animal

Baits laid Tuesday, September 26 to Tuesday October 24, 2023 Area closed to dogs and other pets (including dogs on leads), during and up to four weeks after the fox baiting program.

such as a pet cat or dog eats any bait,” he said. “Pets are banned from all baited areas, but if you believe that your pet may have been in a baited area and is showing signs of lethargy, loss of limb function, blue discolouration of the tongue and gums, or any other uncharacteristic activity, it needs to be taken to a vet immediately as the window to effectively deliver the antidote is only about 60 minutes.”

In Warrnambool, the following vets carry the necessary antidote:

New role for Port controller

FORMER Port Fairy SES unit controller Stephen McDowell is the new operations manager for Barwon South West Region.

Having spent many years as unit controller and an emergency management volunteer, Mr McDowell brings to his new role extensive experience in planning for food emergencies, fire manager and local disasters.

He has been unit controller of the Port Fairy unit since 2012 and was integral in seeking funds for the new VICSES Port Fairy Unit facility.

With over 40 years of experience as a Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteer, he is currently a Lieutenant with Kirkstall Fire Brigade and a Deputy Group Officer of the Belfast Group.

Mr McDowell comes to the role with a wealth of experience and credentials, including qualifications as an Incident Agency Commander, sector and division commander and strike team leader, as well as a Certificate III in Public Safety.

The new facility will be officially opened next month and will be located on the Princes Highway.

The new ‘fit for purpose’ facility reflects VICSES’ commitment and dedication to the local community.

The larger, modern facility will allow the unit to expand its offering to the community during storm and flood events and will better accommodate the retention and recruitment of new volunteers.

Funding for the new building was part of the government’s High Priority Infrastructure Program and was

delivered by the Emergency Services Infrastructure Authority (as part of the community safety building authority).

The important role local SES volunteers play within each of their communities was highlight recently following the recent wild weather which hit across the district.

More than half of the requests for assistance received by VICSES came from the south west of the state.

This included reports of trees down over roads and properties and building

damage.

After a weather event such as this, volunteers also spend time ensure their equipment is ready for next incident –which may include refuelling vehicles, sharpening blades and chains, and replacing and repairing any broken equipment.

Volunteers may also be required to fill out reports on weather conditions, job locations, distances travelled and the severity/details of incidents attended. They also note whether they

established a system for controlling traffic at incidents, the size of limbs and the obstruction created, the number of members mobilised, and other emergency services they may have worked with at the time.

While the role of an SES volunteer can be varied, it is also deemed as rewarding by all those involved.

To register your interest in becoming a volunteer visit www.ses.vic.gov.au/ join-us/volunteer or contact a member of your local unit.

The Mad Splatter, Monk and Quiet Riot headed to Melbourne to compete as part of Team Regional Victoria (TRV) team last weekend.

The Mad Splatter, Monk and Quiet Riot were part of TRV which played against Rockabellas Roller Derby League in the first game.

While the Rockabellas were victorious scoring 315 against TRV 43, Quiet Riot showed some really strong technique and picked up the team award for TRV.

The second game for TRV was against East Vic Roller Derby. Although East Vic displayed excellent skills and game play, TRV found their groove and got some good blocks in and racked up a few penalties.

Final scores were TRV 74 going down to East Vic 257.

Sinnott tops league

CAMPERDOWN footballer

Hamish Sinnott has taken out Hampden League’s top award.

In what was a closely-contested vote count, Sinnott was named winner of the Maskell Medal during last weekend’s annual vote count and presentations, which was live streamed to clubs on Sunday.

Sinnott topped the poll with 18 votes, just one ahead of joint runners-up Jarryd Lewis from the North Warrnambool Eagles and Josh Saunders from South Warrnambool.

The talented 19-year-old also took home the football ‘Rising Star of the Year’ award, topping off a huge 2023 season for the teen.

“To be honest I was totally surprised to win it (the Maskell Medal) but I’m absolutely stoked,” Sinnott said.

“I really thought there was a few boys ahead of me. I was sitting seventh with three rounds to go and then I polled two threes which put me at the top.

“No-one else up there polled in the final round so that’s where I stayed which was a great surprise.”

While the two awards make welcome additions to his trophy cabinet, Sinnott preferred to focus on his home club’s success this year and of his game time at VFL level.

“Camperdown is a great local club and this year we won twice as many games as last season so that’s a huge achievement,” he said.

“We also defeated Koroit at home which is the first time since 2012 (I believe) and we beat North as well and they’re now in the grand final so we have a lot to be proud of as a club.” Sinnott’s two games for Carlton in the VFL were also highlights of the season and he is hoping to get more game time under his belt next year – but as to where he will be playing that is yet to be confirmed.

“My ultimate goal is to play more VFL games next season, and do well, and then hopefully work my way up to the AFL draft,” Sinnott said.

“But I’ve got a lot of work to do. My

first game with Carlton I did alright but in the second we struggled against the big Werribee side.”

In between training sessions both locally and in the VFL, Sinnott is also committed to one more term working at Parade College in Bundoora as a trainee PE teacher and finishing his university studies.

“At the moment I’m not sure where I’ll be playing next year,” he said.

“I’ve had talks with Carlton, Geelong has invited me to do a preseason down there and a few other VFL clubs have

also shown interest so I’ll probably make a decision in the coming weeks.”

No matter where his boots land, this talented midfielder will always be grateful for his opportunities at grassroots level.

“Camperdown is a great club and I’ve got some great mates here; my brother Zac also plays seniors with the Magpies and I have two sisters playing netball here,” Sinnott said.

“Work and study means I’m living in Melbourne at the moment but it’s always great to be back in school holidays to catch up with family and friends.”
