Cash pledge for Neighbourhood Houses

WarrnamboolWeekly l 126 Manifold St, Camperdown. 3260 Telephone (03) 5593 1888 TO CONTACT US

THE Liberals have pledge to spend $10 million on the state’s Neighbourhood Houses over the next four years if elected to govern.

Editorial: For all editorial copy, photographs and news tips, email news@warrnamboolweekly.com.au or telephone 5593 1888. Layout of each edition begins on a Tuesday morning and the earlier copy is submitted, or arrangements made for publication, the more likely material can be published in that week’s edition. All copy should be lodged by midday Wednesday unless prior arrangements have been made. Display and Classified advertising: For all advertising bookings, contact sales@warrnamboolweekly.com.au or phone 5593 1888.

Houses in East Warrnambool, West Warrnambool and Port Fairy will be among the many to benefit from the cash boost if the Liberal party is elected next month, according to Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell. “Neighbourhood Houses are especially valuable, particularly when rising costs are putting families under pressure and leaving some people feeling isolated,” Ms Britnell said. “When money is tight, asking for help can be hard. Our Neighbourhood Houses are welcoming places where people can find practical support, join an activity or simply sit down with someone who cares. “They can be a sanctuary for someone going through a difficult time. Having somewhere to belong and people who notice you when you turn up can make a real difference to a person’s wellbeing.” In East Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Neighbourhood and Community Centre brings people together through community lunches, children’s playgroups and its children’s community garden. West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House offers playgroup, school holiday activities and a range of classes. Port Fairy Community House runs a repair café along with creatives arts and wellbeing programs. “These programs help families make ends meet, give children opportunities to learn and play, and offer people who may be lonely a way to connect with their community,” Ms Britnell said. She said the Liberal commitment would provide additional, recurring funding for existing Neighbourhood Houses and extend state funding to houses that currently receive none. A separate $6 million growth fund would help establish or expand Neighbourhood Houses in fast-growing areas of the state. “The staff and volunteers behind our local houses achieve so much with limited resources,” she said. “A Liberal Government will back their work with more dependable funding so they can keep welcoming people through their doors and responding to what their communities need.”

Bookings should be made as early as possible. Copy and late classified bookings should be lodged by 12noon Wednesday. Advertising sales contact

Follow the clues to complete the mission FLAGSTAFF Hill Maritime Village will become the setting for a giant interactive historical mystery when international theatre company Live History comes to Warrnambool this weekend. ‘In Time: an Immersive Maritime Mystery’ will see attendees follow clues, solve puzzles, uncover hidden stories and interact with live performers as they work together to complete a maritime mission before time runs out. Since launching in Canada in 2015, Live History has performed at over 300 venues across 10 countries, with each show created specifically for the museum or historic site where it is performed. Live History founder Jasmine Bowen said the idea for the company came to her while visiting a museum in Bermuda in 2014. After spending some time there, she eventually realised she was the only visitor. “I used to go to museums every weekend with my grandma, and they were packed. They were amazing places to hang out,” she said. “I wanted to find a new way to bring audiences into museums, to bring history to life, to make it immersive and to make people feel like they’ve stepped through time. “We’ve done everything from the bronze age in a crannog in Scotland all the way up to shows that have characters in the 1990s.” She said that the Live History team enjoyed delving into the history of Warrnambool and the Shipwreck Coast to prepare for the show, including the stories behind some of Flagstaff Hill’s rich collection of shipwreck artefacts.

General Brock and 1812 soldiers greet Live History founder Jasmine Bowen. “Flagstaff Hill is an amazing site with lots and lots to explore,” she said. “We were really spoiled for choice there in terms of what we were going to bring to life, and each one of those artefacts has a person connected to it, a story connected to it.” Visitors will receive a mission briefing when they arrive before being given an hour to explore the site, complete tasks, solve clues and interact with performers. Ms Bowen said the format often helped

people discover stories about their own communities. “A lot of the comments we get are from locals who say, ‘I’ve lived here my whole life and I didn’t know that part of the history’,” she said. “Come prepared to immerse yourself in the experience. Talk to the characters, solve the puzzles and just enjoy your time in the past.” In Time: an Immersive Maritime Mystery will run at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village

from 9.30am to 4pm tomorrow (Saturday, October 10) and Sunday, with timed group departures at 15 minute intervals. The experience is suitable for all ages, with the puzzles and deduction best suited to ages eight and over. Regular Flagstaff Hill admission fees apply, with free entry for Warrnambool City Council residents via the Local Ambassador Program. To find out more visit www.flagstaffhill. com.

Festival to celebrate cultural diversity

WARRNAMBOOL will once again gather to celebrate its cultural diversity with the 2026 Multicultural Festival to be held on Saturday, November 7.

This free celebration of the many cultures, stories, traditions and talents that make the region such a vibrant place to live will run from 10am until 3pm at the Civic Green and the nearby Lighthouse Theatre. The annual festival is the flagship event of the Warrnambool Multicultural Association and is again expected to attract thousands of people for a fun day of music, dance, food, art, cultural activities and community connection. Now a major event on the south west calendar, the festival welcomes more than 4000 visitors each year from across Victoria and interstate. The event was also recognised as Warrnambool’s 2023 Community Event of

the Year. “This festival is about much more than celebrating different cultures,” Warrnambool Multicultural Association member Daisy Ye said. “It’s about bringing people together, creating opportunities to meet new people, sharing our stories and discovering the many things we have in common. Everyone in our community has a place at this festival.” The 2026 program will showcase an exciting mix of cultural and contemporary performances from Australia and around the world. Audiences can experience cultural and traditional performances from Warrnambool’s diverse multicultural community, alongside folk-pop, rock, jazz and a surprise act this year – KPOP Party (with a KPOP random dance challenge and the KPOP Demon Hunters cosplay competition for all ages).

Food will once again be a major attraction of the celebration, with local and regional businesses serving up flavours from around the world. This will include Nepalese momos, dumplings, bao, Balkan food, Indian and Asian flavours as well as woodfired pizza, icecream, donuts and much more. The festival is designed to be interactive, with hands-on workshops and cultural activities taking place in the Lighthouse Theatre foyer. More than 40 stalls will feature local makers, artists, small businesses, community organisations and cultural groups. Handmade crafts, Indigenous art, books, fresh produce, henna and balloon art will

be among the many attractions. Several community groups and service organisations will also be on hand for people to learn more about the many and varied opportunities available across the region. “Our region is home to people with connections to so many different countries, cultures and communities,” Ms Ye said. “One in four people in the south west were born overseas or had a parent born overseas. “The festival gives us an opportunity to celebrate that diversity while building stronger connections between all members of our community.” Entry to the festival is free and all ages are most welcome.

Remembering the lives we hold in our hearts EMOTIONS will run high next Thursday evening when the community gathers to remember some special little lives lost too soon. ‘Light the Way Warrnambool,’ an official Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day event, will be held on the Civic Green from 6pm on Thursday. Organised by Wish Collective and Love From Dad, the evening will provide an opportunity for the community to gather for the premiere of a video featuring local voices (and those from afar) answering the question, ‘What does pregnancy and infant loss awareness mean to you?’ At 7pm participants will join the international ‘Wave of Light,’ with flameless candles provided as our community remembers babies and pregnancies lost, and stands alongside the families who carry them with them. For the Warrnambool event, 180 flameless candles will be available, allowing those at the Civic Green to ‘light’ a candle together in a shared moment of remembrance. “For the past two years we have informally encouraged local businesses and landmarks to light up pink and blue in recognition of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month,” co-founder of Wish Collective Sarah Wallace said. “This year, we are taking it further and inviting the whole community to be a part of it. “Throughout the day businesses, organisations and residents are being encouraged to light up pink and blue, wear pink and blue, and share their participation.” Those attending are encouraged to take along a picnic rug or their own seating, as well as food and non-alcoholic drinks, and settle in for the evening. “The gathering is designed to be relaxed and informal, giving people time to connect with one another before coming together for the Wave of Light at 7pm,” Sarah said. “This event is all about creating a space where pregnancy and infant loss could be acknowledged openly and families could feel seen, supported and remembered. “Pregnancy and infant loss affects so many families, but it can still be something people feel they have to carry quietly. We want Light the Way to show families that their babies matter, their experiences matter, and there is a whole community willing to stand beside them.” Love from Dad’s Matt McConnell said acknowledgement was one of the simplest but most meaningful ways a community could support bereaved

Picture supplied. families. “For families who have experienced the loss of a baby, knowing that their child is remembered matters enormously,” Matt said. “Light the Way is creating a space where our babies can be spoken about, remembered and acknowledged, while showing families that they don’t have to carry their grief alone.” Wish Collective and Love From Dad are currently inviting people to take part in a community video, with contributions welcomed from bereaved parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, health professionals, support people, local businesses and other community members. Anyone who would like to be part of the community video is encouraged to contact Wish Collective. Video contributions can be submitted via email to wishcollective@outlook. com and must be received by 5pm this Saturday, October 10. Contributors will also need to provide consent for their video, image and name to be included in the finished video and shared through associated social media

channels. “This isn’t only an event for bereaved families,” Sarah said. “It’s an opportunity for our whole community to stand alongside them. Sometimes acknowledgement can be as

simple as saying I remember with you; that’s really what Light the Way is about.” Organisers are hoping to livestream the evening so those who aren’t able to attend, or who are not comfortable attending in person, can participate from home.

Free day out for all ages FOR a fun-filled, inexpensive day out with family and friends, head to the Warrnambool Showgrounds this weekend.

Barnesy to headline Red Hot Summer Tour

AUSSIE rock legend Jimmy Barnes will headline an all-star line-up when the Red Hot Summer Tour returns to Warrnambool on Saturday, January 16.

Australia’s best-selling local artist, Barnes will be supported by a classic lineup featuring Jon Stevens (Noiseworks and INXS), Birds of Toyko, Eskimo Joe, Baby Animals, Chocolate Starfish and Sarah McLeod (The Superjesus). Warrnambool will be the second stop on the tour and just one of eight venues

chosen nationally. Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said he was looking forward to another big event at the Warrnambool Racecourse, following the success of the 2026 Red Hot Summer Tour. “The Red Hot Summer Tour was really embraced by locals and the big influx of visitors we have in Warrnambool each January, so it was a really big success,” he said. “We’re really excited to be partnering with the event again this year, and the Red Hot Summer Tour crew has put together

another amazing line-up. “Jimmy Barnes is unstoppable. I think everyone in Warrnambool of a certain age has a story about seeing him at the Lady Bay, and at 70, he’s still going strong, with his most recent album topping the ARIA Charts. “Looking at the rest of the line-up, many of them being chart-toppers themselves, they are all known for the quality of their live performances. “I remember seeing Birds of Tokyo in 2022 at Rod Laver Arena and it was such a powerful set; full of energy.

“It’s going to be one of the biggest events in Warrnambool for the year, so get your tickets nice and early and get ready for what will be an amazing music festival, right here in Warrnambool.” Telstra pre-sale tickets went on sale on Wednesday morning (October 7). The Red Hot Summer Tour and Face to Face Touring pre-sale will start at 11am today (Friday, October 9) with general public sales from 12 noon. Tickets are available at www. redhotsummertour.com.au.

Group celebrates 30 years of growth THE banks of the Merri River, near Harris Street, are thriving with vegetation thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Network. Network members this week celebrated the group’s 30th anniversary with a special ceremonial tree planting near the Harris Street bridge last Wednesday night. Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Network founded the ‘Harris on Merri’ revegetation project in 1966 and since that time dedicated volunteers have worked to revegetate the banks of the Merri River near Harris Street. The group aims to restore indigenous vegetation to provide habitat for fauna, encourage

biodiversity, control weeds, improve water quality and create a beautiful public open space. Multi-storey planting has included trees (Drooping She-oak and Allocasuarina verticillate), bushes and scrubs (Correa species), native grasses and groundcovers (including Coast Twin-leaf and Zygophyllum billardiere). The group has successfully worked in partnership with the South Warrnambool community, Merrivale Primary School, South West TAFE, Warrnambool City Council and Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority to achieve the regeneration of the riparian zone at this site. The group meets on the third Thursday of the month from 9am11am for a working bee. New members are always welcome.

The ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos show the benefits of the revegetation project along the banks of the Merri River (near Harris Street).
