Ken began his walk at Warrnambool’s Snap Fitness on the morning of Saturday, October 17 with the aim of walking around 260 kilometres over 16 days. His plan is to arrive at Buckingham Reserve in Melbourne early next week. Inspired to complete the journey after watching a group of Buddhist monks walk across America, Ken is raising some muchneeded funds for UNICEF – an agency working through the United Nations to protect children’s rights across more than 190 countries and territories. “I was watching a group of Buddhists walk across America for world peace, and then I thought about all the violence in the world – children are suffering because of things they have no control over,” Ken said last week. “Those Buddhist monks doing what they were doing inspired me, and I also remembered the children in places such as Gaza and Iran, so I wanted to do something. “I decided to do a walk from Warrnambool to Melbourne to raise funds and awareness for world peace, and that’s my main motivation. “I’ve just been trying to walk about 18 to 20 kilometres a day and get there when I get there.” Ken said his first day was really hard – tackling hills around the Hopkins Road. “I got to just before Panmure and I was exhausted. Luckily, my niece lives in Panmure too, so that’s where I stayed for the night. “My niece took my bag to a friend’s place

Pledge could break scanner stalemate WARRNAMBOOL’S long wait for a PET scanner may soon be over, with Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell this week pledging its delivery under a Liberal Government. “Warrnambool hospital will receive its long-awaited PET scanner under a Liberal Government,” Ms Britnell said yesterday. “We are committed to delivering this vital diagnostic service if elected to govern, reducing the need for patients and their families to travel long distances for essential diagnostic services.” A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner is an advanced medical imaging device used to detect and monitor cancers, as well as diagnose certain heart, brain and other medical conditions. The technology plays an important role in early diagnosis, treatment planning and monitoring patients’ response to treatment. The scanner was originally promised by the Labor Government during the 2022 state election as part of a statewide commitment to deliver eight new PET scanners, including one at the Warrnambool hospital. However, four years on, the community is still waiting. “The Liberals will deliver the promised scanner and ensure

that the investment translates into improved healthcare services for regional patients,” Ms Britnell said. For people undergoing cancer treatment and managing serious health conditions, access to diagnostic imaging closer to home can make a significant difference. It can also help reduce travel burdens, time away from family and additional costs during an already difficult time. “This announcement reinforces the Liberals’ commitment to strengthening regional healthcare, improving access to essential medical services and ensuring regional Victorians receive the high-quality healthcare they deserve, close to home.” Ms Britnell added that for patients facing a cancer diagnosis, access to timely scans and treatment is critical. “They should not have to travel hundreds of kilometres for medical services that should be available closer to home. “Labor promised Warrnambool a PET scanner four years ago and the Liberals will deliver on the promise Labor have reneged on. “As a former nurse, I know how important early diagnosis and timely treatment area. This technology can make a real difference to patients and their families.” Ms Britnell said she had seen first hand examples of people

funding for the new scanner had already been provided for in the state budget. “What our community needs now is delivery,” Ms Crozier said. “This is about delivering the services our community needs,

Winning idea makes play more accessible AS a speech pathologist specialising in early intervention, Jasmin Beks knows how important it is for everyone to have a way to communicate. And when she saw that the Warrnambool City Council had grants available for community-led projects, she saw an opportunity to help people beyond her own clients. Jasmin successfully applied for funding to install a communication board at the main Lake Pertobe playground via the Cheers to Ideas program. The board features pictures, symbols and words that people can point to in order to express themselves, helping people who have difficulty communicating through speech. “Communication symbols are a really popular form of communication for a lot of people,” she said. “They are used on paper-based boards and in apps, so this is another way that the boards can be used in public spaces.” She said that as well as helping people with additional communication needs, she hoped the new board would start conversations about the different ways

people communicate. “When we think about accessible spaces and supporting those with additional needs, we often think that we need to sort out physical spaces, which we absolutely do, but communication challenges can be harder to see,” she said. “By having this board here at Lake Pertobe we are able to create conversations around what communication access looks like, what different kinds of communication look like and we create a space where everyone feels included.” Cheers to Ideas provides funding of up to $2,500 to support clever ideas to improve public spaces. Finalists are shortlisted, with a public vote helping to determine the winning project. Jasmin said she had never undertaken a project like this before, and the support she received from council staff had been a big help. “Everyone at the council was so helpful,” she said. “Being a first time mum, and this happened around a similar time to me having my baby, it was great to have the support from everyone at the council and it was a great project for me to keep my brain ticking over.” With the next round of funding now open,

Jasmin encouraged anyone with an idea to make a submission. “It doesn’t hurt to put it out, let it grow, and go from there,” she said. And while this is the first communication board in a public space in Warrnambool, she hopes it won’t be the last. “Let’s talk about communication, make it

accessible for everyone and hopefully we’ll see some more boards pop up,” she said. Visit www.warrnambool.vic.gov.au and search Cheers to Ideas to find out more and to submit your idea. Applications for the next round close on Sunday, November 8.

Lawyer finds creative spark DAVID Brozinski can look at a motorcycle fuel tank and a pile of old spoons and see an owl. By day he’s the principal solicitor for the Emma House legal program, but in his spare time he transforms discarded metal into intricate sculptures. It’s an unlikely shift for someone who had never considered himself as being particularly artistic. David first took up woodworking as an adult, before an uncle gave him a stick welder during the Covid-19 pandemic and sparked his interest in metalworking. He has since transformed his shed into a smithy, complete with a forge, an anvil and other metalworking tools. While many blacksmiths make functional items such as knives, David has increasingly gravitated towards artistic sculptures made from recycled materials. He said that the appeal is a combination of working with his hands and expressing his creativity with something tangible to show for his efforts. “I kept doing it because it’s really nice to have something to show at the end. A sense of accomplishment, which you don’t always get from paid employment,” he said. “It’s very different from being a lawyer. “It’s good for your mental health.” Of all the sculptures he has created, David said he was particularly proud of his owl, the first large piece he made. The sculpture is impressive at first glance, but like much of David’s work, reveals more of its character the longer you look at it. Its body is an old motorcycle fuel tank, its eyes are ladles and its feathers are made from spoons. David said the project required numerous visits to op-shops to collect enough cutlery. “There were a lot of trips to op-shops to find more and more spoons, and I was very excited when I found the gold ones,” he said. The motorcycle fuel tank that forms the owl’s body had been picked up by his father at a clearance sale. “I go to clearance sales with my dad and

he bought the fuel tank. And when he did, I said ‘what are you buying that for? It’s just a piece of scrap. You don’t need that’ and then 12 months later I was like ‘you know that fuel thing? Can I have that?’” David said that there is a strong online community of metalworkers to draw inspiration from, while sometimes, just seeing an item can be enough to start forming an idea of what it could become. “The moose started because the green bits were off an old mower that was just on the side of the road,” he said. “It’s just about finding the right bits of scrap to put it together.” David will be among more than a dozen artisan makers at the WreckFest Rare Trades Festival at Flagstaff Hill this Sunday, November 1. Last year’s WreckFest was one of his first opportunities to demonstrate his skills and sell his work to a large audience. He said the experience had been incredibly rewarding, particularly the opportunity to share his passion with people who had never tried metalworking. One interaction with a young girl who stopped to watch him making metal flowers has stayed with him almost a year later. “A little girl came up and she was really interested and was asking lots of questions,” he said. “That was really nice to maybe spark an interest in somebody else.” WreckFest will feature demonstrations by blacksmiths, coopers, cane fishing rod makers, leadlighters, leatherworkers, potters, brewers, woodworkers, lace makers, knitters, silversmiths, glass etchers, hand shearers, quilters, embroiderers, felters and herbalists. There will also be demonstrations of traditional food preserving and even a town crier. The Warrnambool Garrison will fire the 80-pound cannon and there will also be live music and food vendors on-site. Regular admission fees apply, with free entry for Warrnambool City Council residents via the Local Ambassador Program. For more information visit www. flagstaffhill.com

Foundation donates another $100,000 THE Gillin Boys Foundation has celebrated a significant milestone, surpassing $600,000 in funds raised over the past five years to support vital research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The milestone was reached during the foundation’s annual Gala Fundraising Dinner, held at the Warrnambool Golf Club last Friday night - which raised over $17,000. The evening brought together community members, medical researchers, families, donors and supporters, all united by a shared commitment to advancing research, raising awareness and improving the lives of those affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Hosted by Daniel O’Keefe, the gala featured an inspiring program of personal stories, meaningful conversations, medical research updates and a significant funding announcement. Among the evening’s guest speakers was Ben Cunnington, former North Melbourne AFL player, who delivered an inspiring presentation centred around the theme Survive to Thrive. His message highlighted

the importance of resilience, determination and finding strength through adversity, encouraging guests to look beyond life’s challenges and embrace the opportunities for growth, hope and purpose. The evening also featured heartfelt contributions from Laura, Kate, Hayley and Jess, lifelong friends of Christopher Gillin, who shared their personal perspectives and reflected on the importance of friendship and community but most of all stories about Christopher’s strength and resilience. The evening also welcomed Dr Chantal Coles, Dr Peter Houweling, Emily Galea and Leon Kiriaev from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI). They each provided guests with an update on current research developments and advancements in understanding and treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. They also discussed the critical role that community fundraising plays in supporting medical research and progressing towards improved treatment options and, ultimately, a cure. A major highlight of the evening was the announcement of a further $100,000 donation to the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, reaffirming the foundation’s

ongoing commitment to supporting Duchenne research. “We are incredibly grateful for every donor, supporter and advocate who believes in a future without Duchenne,” a spokesperson for the Gillin Boys Foundation said. Christopher Gillin reinforced

the importance of maintaining momentum and continuing the foundation’s fundraising efforts. “The more funds we raise, the quicker the cure,” Mr Gillin said. The foundation extended its sincere appreciation to everyone who attended the gala, contributed to the fundraising efforts, shared

their personal experiences or supported the event. The Gillin Boys Foundation remains committed to building on its achievement, strengthening its partnership with medical researchers and continuing its mission to help create a future without Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Australia national shearing and woolhandling championships. “Apart from the Northern Territory, each state across Australia will be sending a team of 21 to the show to compete,” Warrnambool X Bred Shears secretary Brooke Siegle said. “There’ll be non-stop action in the shed from around 8.30am Saturday, with competition across several categories including open, senior, intermediate, novice and open blade shears along with open, senior and novice wool handling. “The Trans Tasman event, between Australia and New Zealand, will kick off Friday (today) at 8am and that will no doubt be a cracker of a day.” Make sure you take the time to visit the wool shed to see some of Australia and New Zealand’s best woolhandlers and shearers in action. “The Trans Tasman was held in Jamestown last year and was won by Australia so we’re hoping for back-to-back titles,” Brooke said. “Last year’s open shear was won by South Australia’s Sam Bacon while the open wool was won by Alexander Schoff from Queensland. “We’re looking forward to a cracking

couple of days in the shed and showgoers on Saturday should definitely head there to see all the action.” Once again a kids zone will be set up for the day, offering loads of free activities including a circus playspace with HoopSparx (juggling, poi and dancing ribbons), interactive giant bubbles, an animal nursery and mini zoo, free face painting and a giant sandpit. Several community services and groups will also have interactive displays set up across the showgrounds, including the CFA, Warrnambool Model Railway Club, South Western District Restoration Group, SES, ADF Careers and Victoria Police. Make sure you also browse the Wannon Rooms where you will find some wonderful displays of floral art, craft, horticulture, cookery and photography as well as an array of trade stands. Horse and show jumping events, as well as the best cattle, sheep, poultry and fleece in the region will be on show – with the alwayspopular dog high jump competition also set to draw a crowd. With so much to see and do, make sure you head to the Warrnambool Showgrounds tomorrow (Saturday) for a fun-filled day out.

Come for work, stay for pleasure MOYNE Shire’s Work and Play program is helping seasonal workers turn a summer job into the summer of their lives, with local employment opportunities and subsidised accommodation opening the door to life in one of Victoria’s most spectacular regions. If you’re dreaming of a summer by the coast, keen to earn money, meet new people and discover somewhere new Moyne Shire is the place. With seasonal jobs available through local businesses and support to help make accommodation more affordable, the Work and Play program is inviting travellers, working holiday makers and adventure-seekers to make Moyne their home for the summer. From the beach vibes of Port Fairy to the wide-open landscapes and closeknit community of the surrounding shire, there’s so much to discover when the working day is done. Moyne Shire Council mayor Cr Jordan Lockett expressed his enthusiasm for the program, saying finding work while travelling can be exciting. “Finding somewhere affordable to live while doing it can be another story,” Cr Lockett said. “We want to welcome new people to the region to experience our way of life and see what Moyne is all about. That’s where Work and Play can help.” Delivered through a partnership between Moyne Shire Council and

A summer job in Moyne Shire can lead to time spent enjoying a range of activities and events across the municipality. Commerce Moyne, the program connects seasonal workers with local employers and helps participating businesses access subsidised accommodation for eligible summer staff. The program is particularly focused on hospitality and tourism businesses preparing for the busy summer visitor season. Opportunities can include seasonal roles in hospitality and tourism, with

connections to local employers helping workers find their feet and become part of the community. “Whether you’re up for a morning surf, pottering around some of our cozy towns or spending a lazy weekend along the coast, Moyne offers the chance to combine earning an income with experiencing regional Victoria at its best. “And there’s something really special about becoming part of a small

community, even if it’s just for a season.” If you’re planning a working holiday, travelling south-west Victoria or simply looking for a seasonal opportunity somewhere special, now is the time to explore what Moyne has to offer. Find out more about seasonal work opportunities and the Work and Play program through Commerce Moyne, and explore workforce and accommodation support at Make It Moyne.

Advocacy continues for better roads

A LEADING advocacy group has welcomed the state government’s 2026/27 Roads Maintenance Program but said significant gaps remain across the south-west road network. SouthWest Victoria Alliance (SWVA) chairman Cr Dennis Heslin said any investment in regional roads was positive, but many of the roads causing the greatest concern for communities were not reflected in the announced program. “We welcome any investment in southwest roads because our communities desperately need it,” he said. “Communities want to see road crews on the ground and works being delivered. “However, when you look across the region, it’s difficult to argue that the roads highlighted in the program are the roads causing the greatest concern for our local communities.” SWVA noted several south-west councils appeared to receive little or no investment through key elements of the program, despite ongoing concerns about the condition of major statemanaged roads across the region. The alliance said the program’s release comes at a time when independent reports are increasingly highlighting the condition of Victoria’s regional road network. RACV’s 2026 My Country Road survey ranked the section between Portland and Port Fairy as the second most

dangerous regional road in Victoria – behind the Princes Highway west between Camperdown and Colac. The Victorian Auditor-General has also found roads across the state are deteriorating faster than they can be repaired. “Those findings mirror exactly what councils and communities across south-west Victoria have been saying for years,” Cr Heslin said. “Councils, freight operators and residents continue to raise serious concerns about a number of key statemanaged roads that don’t appear to feature in the works program. “From our perspective, there are some significant priorities that have been overlooked.” While welcoming the announced works, SWVA said they should be viewed as only part of the solution. “This Roads Maintenance Program is welcome, but it doesn’t change the fact that there remains a substantial backlog of road rehabilitation and reconstruction works across the south west,” Cr Heslin said. “Regional Victorians don’t expect perfection, but they do expect the roads they rely on every day to be safe, reliable and properly maintained. “There’s still a long way to go before we can say we’ve achieved that.” SWVA said it would continue advocating for increased investment in both state-managed and local roads to support community safety, freight productivity, tourism and regional economic growth.

The hidden world of Lighthouse Theatre SOMETIMES the most compelling stories at the Lighthouse Theatre are played out behind the curtain.

With four different productions coming to the theatre in just six days, the team behind the scenes is preparing for one of its busiest weeks of the year. The fun starts tonight (Friday) with Songs of the Canyon, followed by Kate Ceberano on Sunday (November 1), Fountain Lakes Y2K on November 2 and Guy Sebastian on November 4. Lighthouse Theatre manager Meg Deyell said tight changeovers were sometimes unavoidable with national touring shows, but they also brought a sense of excitement to the theatre, with more than 1500 people expected through the doors. She said the busy schedule was also a reflection of the Lighthouse Theatre’s strong reputation among touring artists, which was something the team took pride in. “Kate and Guy have been here a number of times, so if they weren’t enjoying it when they came here, they just wouldn’t come back,” she said. “I’m super proud of the work that the Lighthouse team does because they do a really good job and they maintain that excellent reputation.” While audiences might attend a 90-minute performance, Meg said there were about 60 hours of staff time involved on that day alone to make sure everything runs smoothly, on top of work completed in the preceding days, weeks and months. “There’s a lot happening behind the curtain. Depending on the show, there can be as many people in the wings as there are on stage,” she said. “It’s like the Wizard of Oz said: ‘Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. He is of no importance.’ “Whereas that’s where we live our best lives. In the wings, making the magic

happen.” For ticketing services supervisor Megan Couch, the work begins before a show is even announced. “There can be up to 12 months of preparation beforehand,” she said. “We make sure we have all the right collateral, working with the promoter, and making sure that when it does go on sale, that the process is as easy and simple as possible for people to purchase tickets.” For theatre technician Elliot Cooper, who also works front of house, the busy week will mean some tight turnarounds as one

CHOOSE

production makes way for the next. “For something massively sold out like Guy Sebastian, it will be a load in with their show crew and ours,” he said. “We’ll be a team of anywhere from eight to 12 people, all working to get the show up. “Between sound, lighting and vision if there are any projections, they might need a flyman if there is anything suspended above the stage. “Then the bump out as well. With a week so jam-packed full of awesome stuff, you’ve got to get them out as quickly and efficiently as they came in and get ready to do it all again.” And while it will be a busy week, Elliot said he wouldn’t have it any other way. “Having that many shows come through here in such a small space of time and the community getting behind them as well, it

feels incredible,” he said. “I’ve been on both sides of it. Performing is amazing and a real thrill. “Hearing people say that they enjoyed your performance whether that’s making them laugh, cry, feel inspired… but being part of the team that can make a show go up, gives me the exact same feeling. “There is a big team making these things happen, and the majority of us do it for the same reason as me, because we love it, and we want other people to enjoy it too.” While the Guy Sebastian show has sold out, tickets for Songs of the Canyon, Kate Ceberano and Fountain Lakes Y2K are still available. Members of the Warrnambool Aero Club are currently looking for people who would love to join them for the 2027 event. Warrnambool Aero Club secretary Janek Krause is eager to hear from anyone who would like to join club members for the trip. “Our club is currently putting together a coach trip to the Avalon Airshow next February and we’re opening this up to everyone in the community, not just our club members,” Janek said. “Thanks to an arrangement with

Warrnambool Bus Lines, the coach itself is covered so travellers only need to chip in towards running costs. “We will have pick-ups in Warrnambool and then Terang, Camperdown and Colac.” According to Janek, the trip will run on one of the public holidays, depending on what the majority prefer – either Friday, February 26 (with the option of staying for the Night Alight evening show), Saturday, February 27 or Sunday, February 28. “We need around 40 people for the trip to go ahead so we’re keen to hear from everyone,” Janek said. Kitchen upgrade for Gunditjmara GUNDITJMARA Aboriginal Cooperative Ltd is set to receive a commercial kitchen fit-out thanks to the latest round of Regional Health Infrastructure Fund (RHIF) grants.

The state government grants were announced by Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora earlier this week. The co-operative has been allocated $250,000 for the kitchen fit-out – one of 12 grants announced. “This latest round of funding will deliver better facilities and equipment, delivering

more capacity to treat patients,” Ms Ermacora said. “This is a big win for the local community. Since 2016 the fund has delivered more than 750 projects, supported local jobs and helped regional health services attract and retain skilled workers. “These upgrades mean better equipment, better facilities and more support for the hard working doctors and nurses our communities rely on. Labor is investing in regional healthcare because we know how much it matters to local families, patients and health workers.”

All roads lead to Dennington ALL roads lead to Dennington on Sunday, November 8 for the 14th annual Dennington’s Day Out. Hosted by St John’s Primary School, the event looks set to once again attract a large crowd to the schoolgrounds for an inexpensive day out the whole family can enjoy. The event continues to grow every year, with an expected attendance of more than 3000 people next month.

The event encourages community partnerships, with a large range of clubs and associations, along with local kindergartens, encouraged to become involved. This is a fun day out for the whole family, with a huge range of rides for the children, including the Music Machine, a mini ferris wheel, piggy train, fun factory, laser tag, chair swing and Neptune VR and inflatables. Once again there will be a vast array of food trucks catering for every taste,

a pop-up shop market with great quality items, and many free activities for children to explore. The day’s program also includes an assortment of entertainment including dancers and singers, along with craft stations and face painting. According to organisers, Dennington’s Day Out continues to receive tremendous support from many local businesses which allows the day to grow each year. Free entry provides an opportunity for

everyone to be involved and have some fun. Unlimited rides wristbands can be prepurchased for $30 or on the day for $35, with single ride tickets just $10 each. This year Dennington’s Day Out (on Sunday, November 8) will run from 10am until 3pm and is definitely an event not to be missed. For more information contact organisers at ddo@sjdennington. catholic.edu.au.

South C Dragons members Marlene O’Brien, Janet Goodall, Glenda Mugavin, Judy Conn and Anne Wallis have returned from France where they competed in the IBCPC Dragon Boat Festival.

FIVE women from Warrnambool’s South C Dragons have recently returned from France where they participated in the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission Dragon Boat Festival. The group joined members from Dragons Abreast Gold Coast to form one of half a dozen Australian teams entered in the festival. “The festival was held in the town of Aixles-Bains and it was just wonderful,” team

member Judy Conn said. “It truly was a celebration and recognition of all breast cancer survivors along with a very moving tribute to those lost to the disease.” In their classy pink berets, matching lifejackets and oars, and specially designed tops, the Dragons (Judy Conn, Anne Wallace, Marlene O’Brien, Janet Goodall and Glenda Mugavin) joined 177 teams from across the world for the festival. “The number of paddlers and supporters there was just mind-blowing,” Judy said. “The festival was for all breast cancer survivors and attracted around 4500

participants.” The Dragons and their Gold Coast teammates competed in the 200m race and finished third in both their heat and the final. “It was amazing to finish third but the festival is more about developing friendships, memories and just having a great time – rather than who finishes where in the finals. “But in saying that, we’re also very proud of our efforts on the water. Finishing third was certainly a very proud moment for us all and we’re very grateful to our local community for its support.” The dragon boat festival is held every

three to four years and is an international, non-competitive participatory event for breast cancer paddler teams who engage in dragon boat activities as post breast cancer diagnosis rehabilitation. This year was the first time since the establishment of IBCPC in 2010 that the event was held in France. The event concluded with a highly emotional flower/closing ceremony. “The closing ceremony was one of the highlights for us all,” Judy said. “This was a very emotional and moving time of reflection, to pause and remember all those lost to breast cancer.”
