This inspirational man, who finds satisfaction and solice in finding time for others, signed up to an R U OK? month-long campaign back in 2023 on a “spur of the moment decision.” But what transpired since has been an incredible community effort. “Living a life that has been impacted by suicide, I really wanted to turn that pain into a purpose,” he said. “The K’s for R U OK? campaign is a monthlong campaign where you set a target goal, both in distance walked and money raised. “You then get out there and undertake the campaign at your own pace. Every kilometre covered and every dollar raised goes into providing the community with educational resources and both online and physical toolkits to help create conversations around suicide prevention and how you can go about checking in on a friend.” Nathan was bestowed the honour of being the 2025 Warrnambool Citizen of the Year for his commitment and determination to put such a hard topic into the public space and to help facilitate awareness and conversations around suicide and suicide prevention. Nathan also received a Wannon Electorate Outstanding Volunteer award in 2025. In 2024, he helped get the R U OK? Conversation Roadshow to Warrnambool and said it was a great moment to see members of the community support the visit. “Receiving such awards is an acknowledgement of what a community can achieve,” he said. Nathan has been named the ambassador for the 2026 campaign, which kicked off yesterday (October 1). “This will be my third consecutive year as an ambassador,” he said. “It’s really rewarding to be involved with, and be supportive of, so many other everyday people who are just having a go at making a difference.”

To the Editor, With school holidays now here I feel it is timely to remind parents to please keep an eye on your children, to stay aware of their surrounds and to keep abreast of where they are going, what they are doing and the company that they are keeping. I refer to a traumatic incident that occurred to a lovely friend of mine in July. My friend was simply in the driveway of her Koroit home one day when a group of young people (age unknown) threw some stones in her direction. One of those stones hit her right eye, leaving her in immense pain with no vision in that eye.

Since then she has endured three operations (with more to come) and still has no sight in that eye. Not only has this unprovoked attack left her with physical injuries, but also emotional scars. I’m unsure whether or not my friend was known to these youngsters or whether they were visitors to the town or locals. What I do know is that this was totally unprovoked. It was disgusting behaviour and it certainly saddens me that the actions of these young people have had such a profound and lasting impact on another human. Please supervise your children whenever possible. School holidays should be an exciting time for all, not a time for reckless behaviour that can affect others.

Immerse yourself in maritime history HISTORY will come to life at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village next weekend with ‘IN TIME: An Immersive Maritime Mystery.’ Visitors will step into the historic village over the weekend of October 10 and 11, meet live characters from Warrnambool’s maritime past, uncover clues and work together to solve the mystery before time runs out. The experience runs for around 60 minutes, with groups departing every 15 minutes. It is family-friendly and suitable for all ages, with the puzzles and clues particularly suited to children aged eight and over. There will also be plenty happening across the village throughout the weekend, including live music and the cannon firing at 1.30pm each day. Stella Maris Tearooms will be open serving hot food and Devonshire teas, while Mrs Kucks Lolly Shop will have plenty of sweet treats available. Flagstaff Hill sales and marketing coordinator Rachel Edwards said the weekend offered visitors a different way to experience the village. “People won’t just be watching history, they’ll actually become part of the story,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for families to explore the village, meet the characters, solve the mystery and enjoy everything else happening across the weekend.” Eligible Warrnambool municipality residents who are members of the Flagstaff Hill Ambassador Program receive free entry. More information and bookings are available at flagstaffhill.com.

Council invests in business facades TEN Port Fairy businesses were among 15 Council received 28 applications this year, with across Moyne Shire to be allocated funding businesses seeking more than $86,000 in funding from pool of $40,000. through the council’s 2026-27 Business a Cr Lockett said the strong response highlighted the Façade Improvement Program. pride local businesses have in their communities. The 15 local businesses and property owners will receive funding to help bring fresh life to shopfronts and commercial buildings across the shire. The program provides matched funding to support upgrades such as painting, signage, restoration works and other improvements that enhance the appearance of business premises and main streets. Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the program was a practical way for council to support local businesses while improving the look and feel of communities across Moyne. “Our town centres are often the first thing people see when they visit a community, and attractive, wellpresented businesses help create a lasting impression,” Cr Lockett said. “This program helps business and property owners invest in their buildings, while also contributing to more vibrant and welcoming town centres for our residents and visitors.”
Before: Borough Chambers was a past recipient of a grant through council’s Business Façade Improvement Program.
“It’s encouraging to see so many business owners willing to invest in their properties and in the future of their towns,” he said. “These projects might involve a fresh coat of paint, improved signage or restoring the character of an older building, but collectively they make a real difference to the presentation and appeal of our main streets. “The program also helps stimulate local economic activity by encouraging additional private investment and creating more attractive places for people to shop, work and visit.” Funding has been allocated to 15 projects across the shire, with priority given to eligible applicants who had not previously received support through the program. Cr Lockett said council remained committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen local businesses and contribute to thriving communities. “Strong local businesses are at the heart of vibrant communities, and this program is one way council can help support that success,” he said.
After: The ‘new look’ Borough Chambers.
Among the successful applicants were: • Oak and Anchor Hotel, Port Fairy – 1903.25 for painting and minor stonework; • Port Fairy Day Spa, Port Fairy - $2174.11 for replacement signage; • 110 Commercial Road, Koroit - $4529.40 for repainting; • Coffin Sally, Port Fairy - $2885.23 for painting and minor repairs; • Koda Deli and Rotisserie (Port Fairy) - $1235.87 for new fascia and window signage; • Blarney Books and Art, Port Fairy - $4529.40 for window works; • Laneway Eatery and Sassy’s Street, Port Fairy $393.60 for signage; • Kever Investment (old Killarney Pub) - $4204.35 for painting; • DOT Architects and Sol’s Pantry, Port Fairy $1811.76 for fascia and signage; • Lagom, Port Fairy - $2690.46 for signage and painting; • Cat Street Store, Port Fairy - $905.88 for window signage; • Community Bank, Port Fairy - $4529.42 for awning.

Six carriages on line later this month TRAIN travellers will soon have access to more seats on the Warrnambool line, with six-carriage V/Locity trains to be introduced later this month. Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora last week announced that as from Friday, October 23, the six-carriage trains will operate on the line for busy Friday and weekend services. According to Ms Ermacora, the introduction of the longer trains was made possible by the recent completion of the Warrnambool stabling facility, which allows more trains to be stabled overnight and supports longer trains. From October 23, V/Line will operate six-carriage V/Locity trains on the following Warrnambool line services: Friday 5.09pm Melbourne to Warrnambool; Saturday 8.48am Warrnambool to Melbourne; Sunday 8.05am Melbourne to Warrnambool; Sunday 12.22pm Warrnambool to Melbourne; Sunday 1.10pm Melbourne to Warrnambool; and Sunday 5.27pm Warrnambool to Melbourne. “The six-carriage trains provide more capacity for passengers during the busy weekend periods, with data identifying these services as the ones that will best meet the needs of users,” Ms Ermacora said. “The increased capacity builds on the completion of the Warrnambool line upgrade which improved safety and reliability, delivered additional services, and allowed modern V/Locity trains to travel on the line for the first time.” To minimise the safety risks at short platforms, V/Line will use controls including door banners and conductor monitoring to ensure it can safely operate six-carriage trains as work continues on more permanent solutions. With half-priced travel on public transport until the end of the year, a trip anywhere along the Warrnambool line will still only cost $5.70. Since the introduction of the regional fare cap, Warrnambool line passengers are saving more than $70 on the former price of a return trip. Passengers should continue to book ahead before they travel to get a seat. “We are making it easier to find a seat on busy services travelling to and from Warrnambool,” Jacinta said.

Wear orange, help make a difference
ARE you looking for a way to contribute to your local community?
VIC SES Port Fairy is currently searching for more volunteers. As a junior-accredited unit, the group welcomes new members from the age of 15. “We would love to see new faces at our meetings,” member Bree Emonson said. “Volunteering with the SES is very rewarding and it can fit around everyday life. “A lot of people assume they need heaps of spare time to become a member when really that isn’t the case.” The Port Fairy unit is currently looking for new members aged 15 and over who are keen to get involved alongside adults and learn valuable skills, build confidence and become part of their local community. “And we’re looking for people from all walks of life,” Bree said. “This includes parents, full-time workers, shift workers, people who work away, semi-retired or retired people, and anyone looking to learn new skills, meet new people and give something back to their community. “We’re particularly hoping to reach people within our local response area, which stretches from Port Fairy through to Koroit, Yambuk and Macarthur. We’re also keen to hear from people who have, or would like to work towards, their truck licence, as this is an important skill within our unit.” As part of the Port Fairy SES, members
Port Fairy SES members (from left) Phil Worrell, Ray Young, Victoria Ottanelli, Hannah Torney, Colin McKane, Ally Thomas and Bree Emonson. can become involved in a range of incidents, including road crash rescue, storm and flood response, working at heights, 4WD, chainsaw operations, community engagement along with many other training opportunities.
There are also different roles within the unit – ensuring there really is something for a wide range of people. The unit currently meets and trains each Tuesday night from 7.30pm until 9.30pm; providing an opportunity for members to
build skills, gain new qualifications and take on new and interesting challenges. Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a member of the Port Fairy SES unit can simply attend a Tuesday night meeting.
Planning scheme in the spotlight
MOYNE Shire councillors have These updates are largely policy-neutral endorsed the Moyne Planning and administrative in nature, ensuring the planning scheme remains current, Scheme Review 2026. This review is a comprehensive, independent assessment that confirms the planning scheme is performing well while identifying opportunities to strengthen planning policy and support future growth across the shire. As required under the Planning and Environment Act 1987, councils must review their planning schemes every four years. The review was undertaken by Schemology and Cummins Planning, with funding support from the Department of Transport and Planning. The review found that the Moyne Planning Scheme provides a robust strategic and statutory framework for managing land use and development and acknowledged council’s work on key projects including the Port Fairy Coastal and Structure Plan, Rural Housing and Settlement Strategy, and Koroit Structure Plan. It also recognised council’s leadership in addressing coastal inundation risks and highlighted the need for ongoing land use and settlement planning through the Moyne Futures Blueprint – Land Use Strategy. Council will now seek authorisation from the Minister for Planning to prepare and exhibit a planning scheme amendment to implement the review’s recommendations.
consistent and aligned with recent strategic planning work and council priorities. Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the review provided a valuable roadmap for the future of planning in Moyne. “This review confirms that our planning scheme is serving the community well while identifying practical improvements that will help ensure it remains current and effective,” Cr Lockett said. “It recognises the significant work council has undertaken in areas such as housing, coastal planning and sustainable economic development, and provides a clear direction for future strategic planning across the shire. “Importantly, the next stage will include public exhibition of the proposed planning scheme amendment, giving our communities and stakeholders the opportunity to have their say on the recommended changes.” Any amendment arising from the review will be publicly exhibited, with community members and stakeholders invited to provide feedback through a formal submissions process. “We aim to constantly improve our planning processes while continuing to meet state guidelines and support good planning outcomes for our communities.”

Deadline looms on pool closure THOUSANDS of school-aged children could be left with nowhere locally to learn to swim if the education department goes ahead with its decision to close the Warrnambool College indoor pool later this year. And with more than 200 members, the Warrnambool Swimming Club is also facing an uncertain future following the recent announcement the college pool will close in coming months and be demolished. President of the swim club, Katie Gleeson, this week urged the department to give the community time to “work on a solution.” “We want to see the report, to see what exactly needs doing to save the pool if that’s an option,” she said. “We just haven’t been given much time and that is also frustrating. To learn less than a fortnight ago that everyone needs to vacate the pool by December 20 is just beyond belief; we need more time.” When news of the closure spread throughout the community a fortnight ago, locals were quick to gather – with an onsite rally last Sunday week (September 20) attracting a crowd estimated in excess of 500. A petition, presented to parliament the following week, had more than 2200 signatures. “There is anger and there is frustration in the community,” she said. “The large crowd that gathered just wanted to show the education department that its decisions affect real people. The pool is home to more than 1400 learn-to-swim students, 240 Warrnambool Swimming Club members, large numbers of adult and recreation squad members, as well as those using it for sports recovery and surf club members training in the off-season. “And, most staggering of all, there are around 4200 school-aged children who have education department mandated swimming lessons utilising this pool.” The community is hoping to delay the planned closure, giving it more time to create a plan moving forward.
“We would also like to see the report that apparently deemed the pool in need of closure and demolition,” Katie said. “If this (closure) goes ahead as planned, this will be the third pool across our district to close in the last year. “First, the Cobden pool was closed and more recently the Port Fairy indoor pool, and now Warrnambool. The Cobden community is fighting hard, raising money and awareness to get the doors re-opened and we want the opportunity, if possible, to do the same. “We have all been left in the dark with very little explanation as to why this decision was made – yet alone given the opportunity to help save the facility. This has such a huge flow-on effect within the community.” Should the pool be demolished, Katie fears thousands of swimmers will be left with nowhere to go. The future of the swim club may be in jeopardy, families may struggle to find
places for their children to learn to swim, and the club’s squads will have nowhere to train. “AquaZone is already near capacity and our squad members, under the dedicated coaching staff from Jayson Lamb’s Splash Factory, train here at the college pool up to four mornings a week plus afternoon sessions at AquaZone. “There is simply not enough lanes or availability at AquaZone to accommodate them all, yet alone leave room for the general public and others.” While the opening of the outdoor pool at AquaZone will provide some short-term relief for the club over the summer months, the winter period will see the club left “high and dry.” “AquaZone also has its own issues, and the facility is in need of upgrades, but we’re hearing council has no funds for that and is struggling to find avenues for revenue. That just adds another layer of concern.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora acknowledged the benefits the Warrnambool College pool had offered in the past. “The Warrnambool College pool has been a wonderful asset for our community, with many local children learning to swim there and many of our elite squad swimmers training at the facility,” she said. “I acknowledge that the pool has been in declining condition and that discussions have been ongoing with Warrnambool College and the Splash Factory for some time. “I look forward to meeting with the club and community to identify how we can better assist parties in this transition, in addition to the engagement government bodies have had with Splash Factory over previous years.” • Pictures courtesy Penny Turner, Warrnambool Swimming Club.

Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell has committed $10 million to redevelop the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club if the Liberals are elected next month.
Liberals pledge $10mil for surf club
WARRNAMBOOL Surf Life Saving Club will get its longawaited redevelopment if the Liberals are elected to govern next month.
Speaking from the Warrnambool foreshore on Wednesday, Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell said a Liberal government would deliver the long-awaited facility, pledging $10 million to fund the project. “If elected, we will fund a new, fit-forpurpose facility to replace the ageing and inadequate clubrooms,” Ms Britnell said. “This redevelopment will provide Warrnambool’s life saving volunteers with the modern facilities they need to patrol the beach, respond to emergencies and continue training generations of young people in water safety.” This commitment comes after years of advocacy from the club, which has actively campaigned for redevelopment funding through annual state budget applications for years. Backed by overwhelming community support, the club has updated its Precinct Master Plan as of March 2026, finalised its business case, and prepared a concept design; rendering the project shovel-ready for construction. The current facility presents significant operational challenges, including restricted visibility of the beach, congested emergency access and conflicts between lifesaving operations, pedestrians and cyclists. The new facility would transform those operations by delivering improved beach surveillance, dedicated patrol areas, firstaid facilities, suitable equipment storage and modern change rooms. “This project is a critically overdue investment in a club that punches well above its weight,” Ms Britnell said. “The Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club is a decorated regional powerhouse, recently recognised as the 2025 Victorian Surf Life Saving Club of the Year and a national finalist. “Approaching its centenary, the club has grown to 850 members and
successfully hosted the Victorian State for hospitality, functions and community “everything that is good about Championships for 13 consecutive events overlooking one of the state’s volunteering” – people giving their time, years, making it a major contributor to most spectacular coastlines.” developing our young people and looking local tourism.” Ms Britnell believes the club represents after others. Ms Britnell believes the club’s volunteers have waited long enough. “The community’s overwhelming support was proven last year when a grassroots campaign raised $67,000 over the three-day May Racing Carnival. “With an application submitted in March 2026 to designate this a state significant project, a Liberal government will back this shovel-ready initiative and deliver a facility worthy of Warrnambool’s magnificent foreshore.” Beyond emergency operations, the redevelopment will create a facility the entire community can embrace. The vision includes a superb base for a restaurant alongside function and reception facilities, creating a destination that showcases extraordinary views across the coastline. The Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club stands as one of the region’s greatest volunteer organisations. Annually, it trains 270 Nippers and 80 new Bronze/Surf Rescue Certificate candidates, while running vital community programs like Brophy Youth Surf therapy and producing national elite iron-level competitors. Ms Britnell believes this redevelopment would ensure those volunteers had facilities worthy of the work they do for decades to come. “This is our commitment to deliver an iconic new facility that Warrnambool can genuinely be proud of; a landmark on our foreshore that serves our lifesavers, our Trained volunteers and community and our visitors. “Our surf lifesavers give their time to no referrals required keep our community and visitors safe. They should not be expected to operate from an outdated facility that restricts Enquiries to their view of the beach and makes emergency access more difficult. support@wdchospice.org.au “Our vision is bigger than simply or our mobile 0488 271 224 replacing a clubhouse. WorkSafe is coming to Warrnambool
WORKSAFE is coming to Warrnambool to share expert advice on workplace health and safety and support injured workers. Employers and workers are invited to a free event, to be held at the Lady Bay Resort next Thursday, October 8 as part of WorkSafe’s annual Health and Safety Month roadshow across Victoria. A complimentary breakfast will be followed by a session with inspectors discussing current health and safety issues, local data trends and the resources and support available from WorkSafe. Other topics will include an in-depth discussion designed to build confidence and capability in meeting return to work obligations, as well as insights from WorkSafe’s strategic approach to regulating the healthcare and social assistance industry. The event will wrap up with a chance to connect with WorkSafe experts over morning tea. WorkSafe chief health and safety officer Sam Jenkin said the presentations will focus on local health and safety issues while also highlighting WorkSafe’s role in the community. “These sessions are designed to give local employers and workers the information and tools to make a real difference to health and safety in their workplaces,” Mr Jenkin said. “This is a great opportunity for local businesses to network with each other and get expert advice from WorkSafe on reducing workplace harm and improving outcomes for injured workers.” WorkSafe’s series of in-person events across regional Victoria and Melbourne will be followed by a week-long series of Health and Safety Month webinars in the final week of October. Data released last week for the 202526 financial year showed WorkSafe inspectors conducted 407 visits to
workplaces in Warrnambool, issuing 134 compliance notices. During that financial year, there were 204 injury claims accepted by WorkSafe in Warrnambool, including 25 mental injury claims. Of those claims, 53 related to health care and social assistance, 25 to construction and 21 relating to public administration and safety. For more information or to register for next week’s session visit worksafe.vic. gov.au/events/hs-month-2026-mildura

BeachPatrol targets Discovery Bay
MORE than 108,000 pieces of marine debris has been removed from Blacks Beach in Discovery Bay by a group of dedicated volunteers.
The debris, which together weighed almost 202 kilograms, was removed by members of BeachPatrol 3280-3284 during last Sunday’s annual clean-up. The group has organised annual clean-ups at Blacks Beach since 2022, transporting volunteers by bus from Warrnambool, Koroit, Port Fairy and Portland. Last weekend’s clean-up removed another huge amount of waste from the sand thanks to 31 dedicated people. But it’s not all going to landfill. About half of the material recovered on the weekend has been taken to the Killarney Arts Residency for use in ‘Stories From The Sea’, a Regional Arts Australia project developed with BeachPatrol 3280–3284. “Fishing ropes and nets can be used for basket weaving, plastic fragments for mosaics, fishing crates for storage, and broken fishing equipment for sculptures and larger installations,” co-leader Colleen Hughson said. “Bottle lids, toothbrushes and other recognisable objects will also contribute to data displays and artworks showing how ocean currents transport debris, including items from Indonesia and other countries, to the south-west Victorian coastline.” Ms Hughson said the ‘come and try’ sessions give community members opportunities to work creatively with recovered marine debris, learn about ocean pollution, become involved in clean-ups and gather to discuss the problem together. Sessions held so far have included basket weaving, mosaics and making balls from recovered fishing rope. Upcoming activities include creating an eye splice using traditional marine rope skills and recycling ocean plastics. Although this year’s collection was the smallest so far by weight and volume (the biggest clean-up was in 2024 when volunteers collected 760 kilograms in just two hours), this year’s volunteers concentrated heavily on collecting and sorting the thousands of small plastic fragments scattered across the beach. Ms Hughson said the smaller pieces made this clean-up particularly confronting. “Collecting large ropes, nets and fishing gear is physically demanding, but it also feels satisfying because you can immediately see what you have removed,” she said. “Collecting small plastic fragments feels like a never-ending task. The more you collect, the more you see. Our volunteers gathered more than 100,000 small hard-plastic remnants, but that did not even scratch the surface.” The fragments have broken up from many different plastic products after prolonged exposure to waves, sand and sunlight. As they continue to degrade, they become increasingly difficult, and eventually impossible, to collect. The beach is also heavily contaminated with microplastics smaller than five millimetres. Rather than counting every small fragment individually, volunteers estimated the quantity by volume. BeachPatrol volunteer Judy Spencer had previously counted and retained 34,252 small plastic remnants as a reference collection. The volume gathered at Blacks Beach was over three times that amount, producing an estimate of more than 104,000 pieces. “All remaining debris was sorted and counted individually so the data could be used in BeachPatrol’s research and advocacy work,” Ms Hughson said. “The ocean connects us all, and its currents carry rubbish from the west towards our coastline. “We recognise that whatever is not collected from Discovery Bay can eventually wash back out to sea and make its way further along our coast, more degraded, more fragmented and much harder to remove.”
More than 108,000 pieces of marine debris was removed from Discovery Bay. The 975 bottle lids were another striking feature of the collection on Sunday - many were heavily weathered and are likely to have travelled at sea for years and across thousands of kilometres before reaching Discovery Bay. Ms Hughson said BeachPatrol began organising group clean-ups at Blacks Beach after recognising that the scale of pollution was too overwhelming for individuals to face alone. “For people visiting this beach for the first time, seeing so much plastic is genuinely shocking. It makes the enormous scale of ocean plastic pollution very real,” she said. “These organised clean-ups allow us to face the problem, and the feelings of overwhelm, together. People leave with a strong sense of achievement and connection to others in the group.” Among the items collected on Sunday were 975 bottle lids, 751 pieces of fishing rope, 145 broken rock-lobster pot pieces, 70 plastic drink bottles, 40 toothbrushes, 742 pieces of polystyrene and more than 104,000 small hard-plastic fragments. “A huge thank you goes to the 31 volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the day, alongside staff from Glenelg Hopkins CMA and the Victorian Fisheries Authority,” Ms Hughson said. The clean-up was sponsored by Glenelg Hopkins CMA, supported by the Victorian Fisheries Authority, and made possible with a bus and volunteer driver provided by Coles Coaches.

Cats celebrate ALLANSFORD footballers and netballers have celebrated season 2026 with two special presentation nights. The junior presentation evening, held at the clubrooms on September 17, was well attended by families and supporters while seniors celebrated the season with an evening at the Timor Street Bowls Club on September 19. A highlight was the awarding of the Jack Morgan Club Person of the Year trophy to 2026 recipient, Bridget Foster. Bridget, who played netball with the A reserve team this season, also coached the under 17 side, was on the social committee and a tireless volunteer who contributes a great deal behind the scenes. This year’s Norma Adams Under 23 Award (voted on each week) was presented to Rani Jamieson. Congratulations to all award recipients.
