GATEWAY Plaza will once again host the MacKillop Family Services Christmas Gift Appeal.

The WarrnamboolWeekly is a member of the Regional Media Connect.

Plaza shoppers and visitors will again have the opportunity to donate gifts for foster children, and other vulnerable families and children across the district, this upcoming festive season. Gateway property manager Sarah Porter said last year’s appeal received overwhelming support, with almost 500 gifts donated along with several gift vouchers. “The generosity of people last year was just incredible and we’re hoping to raise the bar even further this year,” Sarah said. “We know many people in our community are doing it tough so it’s amazing to see just how generous

families and children in our community via the agencies and services.” According to Ms Umbers, last year’s appeal meant that foster carers were “completely sorted with gifts” and didn’t have to purchase out of their own pockets – and it also meant there were enough gifts for a few for each child. “The community went above and beyond with the gifts that were donated to the appeal via Gateway Plaza,” she said. The Christmas tree will be set up from Monday, November 9. “We will hang gift tags on the white fence at the tree for people to grab a boy or girl tag,” Sarah said. “Presents don’t need to be wrapped, just a tag stuck on, and these can be left under the tree.”

Feasibility study into aquatic needs

MOYNE Shire Council has welcomed a $40,000 Victorian Government funding commitment to support a feasibility study and business case for a potential new indoor aquatic facility in Moyne Shire.

The funding will complement council’s existing commitment of $80,000, enabling the detailed investigation identified as an immediate priority in the recently adopted Aquatics Facilities Strategy 2026-2036. Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the funding was an important step forward in understanding whether a future indoor aquatic facility could be delivered in Moyne Shire. “Good decisions start with good information,” Cr Lockett said. “We need to understand whether an indoor aquatic facility is feasible, where it may be best located, what services it should provide, how much it would cost to build and operate, and what level of community benefit it would deliver. “This study is about gathering the information we need to make evidencebased decisions for the future and we are grateful for the government’s support through this funding.” At its June 2026 meeting, council adopted the Aquatics Facilities Strategy 2026-2036 following extensive community engagement and stakeholder consultation. As part of that decision, council committed $80,000 in the 2026-27 Budget to commission a feasibility study and business case for a new indoor aquatic facility within Moyne Shire and resolved to actively pursue external funding opportunities to support the work. Cr Lockett said aquatic facilities

require significant capital investment and ongoing operational funding, so it was critical council properly understands the opportunities, challenges and long-term implications before considering any next steps. “Securing external funding for this study is an important step forward,” he said. “It gives us the opportunity to properly explore what an indoor aquatic facility

could look like for Moyne and what would be required to make it a reality. “This is the beginning of an important planning and decision-making process. We need to understand the options, the costs and the long-term sustainability of a facility before we can make informed decisions about future investment.” Cr Lockett said the community deserved

a thorough and honest assessment to understand if an indoor aquatic facility in Moyne was possible, so that any future decisions were grounded in good information, realistic costs and the needs of the community. Council will now undertake a procurement process to engage a specialist consultant to deliver the study, aiming to start work early in the new year.

The St Ann’s class of 1966 gathered in front of the Grotto for Emmanuel College’s first ‘homecoming reunion’ on Saturday.

Students come ‘home’ THERE are some places that never One group of former students particularly enjoyed revisiting their school days, and in a really leave us. No matter how many years pass, returning to where we went to school brings back memories, friendships and moments that helped shape who we are. That was the spirit of Emmanuel College’s first Homecoming Reunion Weekend, which welcomed alumni from seven year levels (from 1966 right through to 2016) for a memorable celebration of friendship, community and shared history. From the moment alumni arrived on campus, there was an unmistakable sense of excitement. Familiar faces emerged, old friendships were renewed, and conversations quickly turned to stories of school days past. Walking through the college grounds once again sparked plenty of “remember when?” moments, with classrooms, corridors, home rooms, the chapel and sporting fields bringing back a flood of memories. For some, it was their first visit in decades, but the sense of belonging remained.

playful nod to the past, they even swung on the rope and rang the old school bell. The reunion also offered an opportunity to reflect on how much the college has changed, while celebrating the history that connects its past and present. Attendees enjoyed the historical storyboards, magazines, symbols, badges and photographs on display. Across the seven year levels, there were countless stories of careers, families, achievements, challenges and adventures. Yet, despite the different paths everyone had followed, the connection to their school remained strong. Alumni who had not seen one another for years were soon chatting and laughing as naturally as old friends. The celebrations continued beyond the school gates and late into the evening, with year levels gathering for lunches, dinners and drinks, providing more opportunities to catch up, reminisce and strengthen old friendships.

Next stage of path renewal begins THE next stage of Warrnambool City Council’s CBD footpath renewal program has begun, with ageing asphalt footpaths in Lava, Koroit and Timor streets to be rebuilt. The works will cover sections of Lava Street, Koroit Street and Timor Street (between Liebig and Banyan streets), replacing worn, patchy and uneven asphalt with new, smooth surfaces. Work will start in Lava Street before progressing to Koroit Street and Timor Street. Work is expected to be complete by late November, depending on weather conditions. The project forms part

of council’s ongoing program to renew asphalt footpaths throughout the Warrnambool CBD as they reach the end of their useful life. Sections of footpath have already been renewed in Lava, Kepler, Gilles, Fairy and Banyan streets, as well as Raglan Parade. Properties will remain accessible for the vast majority of the works. Access will need to be restricted for a few hours to remove the existing footpath, and then again while the new asphalt is laid, however the footpath and properties will be accessible in between these times. Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the finished result would be a much smoother footpath.

Visitors to the Warrnambool CBD will soon enjoy new, smooth footpaths across many areas.

“The asphalt footpaths have become worn and uneven over the years, and we are progressively working our way through

the city centre and making them safer and easier for everyone to use,” he said. “An important part of the planning for this multi-year project is cooperating with utility companies who may need to access their infrastructure beneath the surface of the footpaths. “For example, with the AusNet gas works currently under way in Warrnambool, we’ve worked with them to only schedule footpath renewals in areas that they

have already completed their gas works in. “We know there are still more asphalt footpaths to be rebuilt across the city centre and these will be done in stages over the coming years, but if you ever encounter a hazard on any footpath across the city, please contact us so we can investigate.” Cr Blain thanked nearby residents and businesses in advance for their patience while the work took place. “Our staff have

been working directly with businesses and property owners in the affected areas ahead of construction to minimise disruptions,” he said. “There may be shortterm changes to vehicle and pedestrian movements during the project, so please be aware and observe all signage.” Council staff will continue to liaise with impacted properties as the project progresses.

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

Proposed minor development of Baxter Street Reserve Council is seeking feedback on proposed works for Baxter Street Reserve, Port Fairy. A list of options can be found in the survey on our Engage Moyne website, and include landscaping, path upgrade, barbecue, furniture and more. A proposed landscape plan shows potential layout and elements, as guidance. We would like to hear how residents use the space, and what park users would like to see.

Funding announced for Koroit Youth Space Council has welcomed the announcement of major step forward for the Koroit Youth Space, with $500,000 in Victorian Government funding secured to help bring this community-driven project to life. A key element of the application was the contribution of over $100,000 by the Koroit community to help fund this project. The funding will help deliver some of the features young people and the community have been asking for, including a brand-new pump track, accessible footpaths, new seating shelter upgrades and improvements to the existing court area. Combined with Council’s $400,000 budget commitment and the money raised through local community efforts, there’s now significant momentum behind the project. Council will continue to pursue funding for future stages, including landscaping and playground development. People’s Choice victory for Daisy WARRNAMBOOL’S Daisy Ye has taken out the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the 7NEWS Community Achievement Awards (Australia). An elated and humbled Daisy was presented with the award during a special ceremony in Melbourne last Saturday night. She was also named as one of 28 finalists (across seven award categories) in the Regional Development Victoria Leadership and Innovation Award (from among more than 200 nominations state-wide). “It was so inspiring to hear all the incredible achievements of the other finalists,” Daisy said. “I’m so proud and so humbled to have ranked number one in the People’s Choice Award. I’m so very grateful for the support of the Warrnambool community and for the way the entire district has welcomed me and embraced my culture and my differences.” Born and raised in Shanghai China, Daisy travelled to Australia just nine years ago with her husband Phil. The couple spent time with Phil’s family in Bundaberg and then planned to tour the country in their caravan, exploring various states. “We had big plans to travel the country in our van but

along the way I fell pregnant and amid all our medical appointments we found the staff at Warrnambool were the most welcoming,” Daisy said. “So we stayed put. Warrnambool was such a welcoming town and a wonderful place to raise our son; no-one seems to mind my English with an accent.” While she has only lived in Warrnambool for a relatively short period (seven years) Daisy has already made a huge impact on the local community. As president of the Warrnambool Multicultural Association, this inspiring leader continues to work hard to break down barriers for migrants and refugees, and to help encourage acceptance and a sense of intrigue and curiosity among the entire community. “We have so many wonderful volunteers doing wonderful things, not just associated with our multicultural group, but across the Warrnambool community in general,” Daisy said. “This People’s Choice Award is not just about me, it’s about our entire community and I sincerely thank everyone who took the time to vote for me. “This award reflects the work we are all doing, in so many different ways, to promote acceptance and understanding. Our community is thriving and we need to continue to work to create space for all.” While Daisy was extremely grateful to all those who had

supported her on her journey since arriving in the district, she was particularly grateful for the support of her family. “I’m very lucky to have such a supportive husband who always has my back,” she said. “Phil and his family introduced me to the way of life in Australia and they have always supported my ideas and the many voluntary hours I have given through various groups and events.” Earlier this year Daisy landed what she considers the perfect role for her at Deakin University – with the team at Deakin Create. Create stands for Centre for Refugee Employment, Advocacy, Training and Education. It is focused on supporting refugees and migrants to rebuild their careers through research, career clinics, education access and policy advocacy. “I am working with local refugees and migrants to help improve their employment, education and career outcomes,” Daisy said. “It is a very rewarding role that allows me to use my experiences and my knowledge to help others as they settle into life in this beautiful part of the world. “Shanghai and Warrnambool are certainly worlds apart but I feel very privileged and honoured to call Warrnambool home.”

Love your cat? Keep them home at night KEEPING your cat home at night can help protect it from cars, fights, disease and other dangers, with Warrnambool cat owners being reminded to bring their pets in before sunset. RSPCA Victoria research shows cats that are allowed to roam can have their life expectancy reduced by up to 10 years, while vet bills and visits for roaming cats are 400 per cent higher. Warrnambool has a night-time cat curfew, requiring cats to be confined to their owner’s property between sunset and sunrise. Warrnambool mayor and cat owner Cr Ben

Winners! FIVE lucky families have won themselves free entry to this year’s Port Fairy Show. The 171st annual show, to be held on Saturday, November 7, looks set to be a day filled with colour and excitement. Congratulations to the winners of the ticket giveaway, whose names were drawn from a hat earlier this week Marea Sholly, Kat Chersicla, Stephen Brennan, Shakira Lamb and Christine Stevens. Each family pass will entitle the holder to free admission for two adults and three children.

Blain said reducing the amount of time cats spend roaming was one of the best things owners could do to help keep their pets safe. “Cats are amazing animals. They make great companions and they each have their own unique personalities, so they really become part of the family,” he said. “And that’s why it’s so important to keep them safe, because it can be easy to underestimate the dangers cats face when they are out roaming, especially at night. “Sadly, the loss or injury of a cat is something that many owners have faced. According to RSPCA Victoria research, two out of three cat owners have previously lost a cat to a roaming-related incident.” Staff and volunteers at the Warrnambool Animal Shelter see it every day - caring for cats that are lost or injured. Making sure your cat is microchipped, registered and that your contact details and address are kept up to date are so important, because if something happens to your cat, it means we can get it home safely much sooner. “Even if your cat has always come home safely in the past, it only takes one incident to lead to trouble,” Cr Blain said. Cr Blain said that keeping cats contained also helps protect native wildlife. “Cats are natural hunters, so keeping them safely at home is good for your pet and good for the birds, mammals and reptiles that call Warrnambool home,” he said. “According to the Australian National University, each domestic cat kills an average of 110 native animals each year, and they only bring home a small proportion of what they kill.” Cr Blain said cats could still live happy and stimulating lives while being contained, either indoors or in a suitable cat enclosure.

Animal attendant Lillian Teal and Warrnambool City mayor Cr Ben Blain are encouraging cat owners to keep their animals safe at night. Picture courtesy Warrnambool City Council. “People may think that cats need to spend a lot of time roaming to be able to express their natural behaviours, but there are lots of ways to keep cats active and entertained at home,” he said. “Toys, scratching posts, climbing spaces, spending time playing with them or providing a secure outdoor enclosure are all great options. “There are lots of really useful resources available online to help you and your cat

make the transition to a new routine.” Cat owners can find practical tips and ideas for keeping cats happy at home through RSPCA Victoria’s Rethink Roaming website www.rethinkroaming.com.au and the Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife campaign website at www. safecat.org.au. Locals shine at state awards

WARRNAMBOOL residents continue to shine on the big stage, with two locals named among just 16 recipients state-wide to receive a Victoria Senior Achiever Award. Locals Jeanette Hajucl and John MacInnes were each presented with a Victorian Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria Senior Achiever Award at Government House. “For Warrnambool to have two people recognised among just 16 award recipients across Victoria is a fantastic achievement and something our community can be very proud of,” mayor Cr Ben Blain said. “John and Jeanette have each made an enormous contribution to Warrnambool’s cultural life, not just with their own musical talents, but by creating opportunities for others through their countless hours of volunteer work and leadership.” Cr Blain said local clubs and groups rely heavily on the dedication of volunteers, and Warrnambool was very fortunate to have people like John and Jeanette who have helped quite a few organisations thrive for so many years. “These awards are also a great reminder of the important role older residents play in our community,” Cr Blain said. “John and Jeanette are both great examples of people who continue to share their experience and enthusiasm for the benefit of the wider community.” Following a new focus for the award (established in recent years), the COTA Victoria Senior Achiever Awards shine a spotlight on local champions within Victorian communities. Recipients are proven to go above and beyond to improve not only their local areas, but the lives of those within them. “This year’s honourees remind us that older Victorians make extraordinary contributions to every part of community life,” Ben Rogers, chief executive officer of COTA Victoria and Senior Rights Victoria said. “We’re proud to recognise this remarkable group of community leaders, whose achievements span culture, emergency services, health, the arts, inclusion and practical support. “These honourees are united by a determination to help others feel valued, welcomed and connected. Their generosity and commitment challenges outdated assumptions about ageing and demonstrate the lasting impact older people make across this state.”

Save the date Town earns heart safe status DONATIONS of new toys and non-perishable foods are now being accepted for this year’s Warrnambool Motorcycle Toy Run. The toy run will take place on Saturday, December 5 with bikers set to leave Rafferty’s Tavern at 1pm. The ride will finish with a free community barbecue at Lake Pertobe. All donations will support the Salvation Army. Donations can be left at various locations across the district, including Bendigo Bank (Warrnambool and Port Fairy branches), Toyworld, BBQs Galore, the Koroit Newsagency and Eureka Sheds Warrnambool.

THE township of Koroit was one of 12 across the state to recently graduate as a ‘Heart Safe Community.’

This brings to 66 the number of heart safe communities across Victoria, thanks to a 12-month program run by Ambulance Victoria and the Heart Foundation. The program, which empowers more community members to take life-saving action, allows

participants to learn the simple skills that can make the difference between life and death. This includes recognising a cardiac arrest, giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using an automated external defibrillator (AED), registering publicly accessible AEDs and signing up as GoodSAM responders. Over the past year, across those 12 towns, Ambulance Victoria trained more than 4300 community

members to call, push, shock – and there are now 172 registered AEDs, with 70 of them publicly accessible 24/7. In Koroit alone, 252 community members have trained in ‘call, push, shock.’ The town has also registered nine new AEDs (bringing to 12 the number of machines in Koroit), with five of those publicly accessible 24/7.

Walking club hits its stride A WALK in the fresh air followed by a hot cuppa and easy conversation with new-found friends sounds like the perfect way to spend a relaxing morning.

Warrnambool’s recently formed Sonder Social Club gives local residents of all ages the opportunity to meet once a month for a gentle walk and a friendly catch-up. According to support lead with Sonder Living, Maddie Cook, this new group is open to residents of all ages and abilities – you don’t need to be super fit, in fact, if you prefer not to take part in the walk and would just like the chance to meet new friends and enjoy casual conversation, this group is also for you. “The Sonder Social Club is something I’m really excited about because it’s about much more than simply going for a walk,” Maddie said. “It’s about connection, inclusion and making sure that everyone in our community has somewhere they feel welcome. “Through Sonder Living, we support people living with disability and older members of our community and one thing we see time and time again is how important genuine social connection is.” Maddie said it can be surprisingly difficult for people to find opportunities to get out, meet new people and feel like they are part of something - particularly

for people who may have limited mobility, live with disability, be socially isolated or simply not have a big social circle. That’s where the idea for the Sonder Social Club came from. “We wanted to create something that was completely free, genuinely inclusive and open to absolutely everyone,” she said. “It isn’t a service, there’s no referral or funding required and you don’t need to be a Sonder Living client. It’s simply a chance for people from all walks of life to come together, have a chat, get some fresh air and hopefully make a few new connections along the way.” The group plans to meet at the Pavilion at 10am on the first Sunday of each month for a relaxed community walk before heading back for a coffee and catch up afterwards. “People can come on their own, bring a friend or family member, or come along as a carer or support person,” Maddie said. “Accessibility is a really important part of what we’re trying to achieve. The walking route is fully accessible so people are welcome to bring walkers, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. “There is also a ramp into the Pavilion, making it easy for everyone to join us for the social side of the morning too.” And there is absolutely no prize for being the fastest. Maddie insists the walk isn’t

the walk, or would prefer not to, is also welcome to go along for a cuppa and catch up. “The social connection of these events is really the heart of it,” she said. “I think one of the things that makes Sonder Living a little different is that we genuinely want to be part of the community, rather than simply provide a service within it. “Ultimately, we’d love for the

Sonder Social Club to become something people look forward to each month; somewhere they can turn up not knowing anyone and leave having had a good conversation, a laugh and perhaps even made a new friend.” The first walk will begin at 10am on Sunday, November 1. A sign will be placed on the grassed area near the Pavilion Café as a meeting point.

MOYNE Shire Council is bringing safer road crossings to Port Fairy with new raised pedestrian crossings to be installed at Griffiths Street and the Ocean Drive/James Street intersection ahead of the summer visitor season. These improvements follow concerns about pedestrian safety at Griffiths Street near East Beach and at the intersection of Ocean Drive and James Street, where busy roads and high pedestrian activity can create challenges for people trying to cross. Funding for the planning and construction of the raised platforms has been provided by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) through the Safe Local Roads and Streets program. With permits and approvals in place, Moyne Shire Council will project manage the works and construction will be delivered by Warrnambool contractor, Elite Spray Seal & Asphalt.

Works are being scheduled to minimise disruption and ensure the new crossings are in place ahead of the busy summer peak visitor season, but council advises that traffic management will be in place at these locations. Construction is expected to take around six weeks at each location, with works scheduled in the following stages: Griffiths Street crossing - mid-October to November 2026; Ocean Drive and James Street - midNovember to early December 2026. As with any road construction, there will be some temporary disruption while the crossings are built. Traffic conditions and access may change as works progress and road users are asked to slow down, follow signage and allow extra time when travelling through work areas. The short-term inconvenience will help create safer, more pedestrian-friendly streets for locals and visitors alike. For more information, visit the Engage Moyne section of the council website.

Perfect weather for little athletics

LAST Friday saw approximately 70 little athletes attend the showgrounds track in bright sunshine and perfect athletics weather.

Members of the Port Fairy Little Athletics club were eager to try some new events for the first time – with the committee event helpers focused on teaching technique, while giving a chance for fun and friendship. Some fantastic efforts were recorded on the track, with all athletes trying longer distances and some of the younger athletes getting a chance to try the on-track program. There was also some ripper throws in the discus cage, with the night finished off with many happy, smiling faces. The club thanks all parent helpers who made the night so much easier. Congratulations to all athletes who continue to show every week that athletics is a great way to have fun and make new friends while gaining life-long skills. New registrations are still open, and a two week trialling membership is a fantastic way to give aths a go. Check out the Little Athletics Victoria website for more information.
