FUN WEEKEND... to be sure, to be sure.

HUNDREDS of visitors joined with local families to celebrate the Koroit Irish Festival last weekend.

HUNDREDS of visitors joined with local families to celebrate the Koroit Irish Festival last weekend.

The town was awash with green as festival goers enjoyed a wide range of activities, food stalls and entertainment.

The sun was shining, the smiles were wide and the parade was colourful as the theatre, Village Green and the local streets came alive in celebration and

song.

The windows of Koroit’s local stores were decorated with shamrocks, leprechauns and Irishthemed merchandise and several street stalls were also set up as part of the festivities.

Koroit’s village green staged free entertainment for children while entertainers such as Maria Forde, The Rummagers and Apolline kept visitors entertained.

The Koroit Irish Cultural Trail, a new addition to this year’s program, also proved popular as did the ‘Kortraits’ art exhibition which gave young artists

an opportunity to display their work, telling stories about the people and places of Koroit.

Large crowds lined Commercial Road for the festival’s main attraction – its parade.

Bagpipes, classic automobiles and members of the Christine Ayres School of Irish Dancing, the Koroit and District Historical Society and the local kindergarten all took part in the parade.

Sunday’s program included a Gaelic Games Day at Victoria Park.

MAJOR Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision in Port Fairy on Wednesday evening.

It is believed a car and an empty livestock truck collided on the Princes Highway just before 6pm.

The driver, a 38-year-old Portland woman, died at the scene.

The driver of the truck was not injured and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

This year’s guest soloists will include Eleanor Donelan on flute, Craig Everingham (lyric baritone), Tristan Forster (violin), Jeanette Hajncl (recorder), Tamara Joukoff (cello), Matt Toffolon (bassoon) and Charlie Young (trumpet).

“I believe the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day would be to enjoy a special family lunch together and then come to the concert in the afternoon,” orchestra president John MacInnes said.

Tickets for the concert can be purchased at the Lighthouse Theatre box office on 5559 4999, online at www.lighthousetheartre.org.au or at the door.

St Joseph’s Church is located in Lava Street, Warrnambool.

life for old timber

SEVERAL large, historic wooden beams have found a new home in the McGennans amenity block, currently under construction in Warrnambool.

The old timber beams, which were an integral part of the Edwards and Wollaston bridges for many years, were recently lifted in to place at the new facility, currently under construction at the entrance to the McGennan car park in Pertobe Road.

“The old beams were believed to have been installed in the bridges back in 1890,” Leigh Duffy, owner of Bolden Constructions said.

“They were extremely heavy and cranes were needed to lift them into place; they look amazing and we’re all proud of how the new block is coming along.”

The new building, which was identified as a priority in the Lake Pertobe Master Plan, will feature improved accessibility, junior toilets, baby change tables, bench seats and several external warm showers.

Two ambulant toilets will also be incorporated into the facility and some earthworks and reshaping of the hill will be undertaken before construction of an improved walking path from Pertobe Road to the Promenade.

It is anticipated the project will cost around $814,000 and will be completed by mid-October.

The project has been funded by Warrnambool City Council and the federal government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

From the Mayor:

At last week’s Council meeting we made a really important decision about the future of the Port Fairy Community Pool and Fitness Centre.

As Councillors, we understand how important the facility is to the wider community, and part of the decision we made was to continue supporting the center financially – even though it’s not a council owned or managed asset – until the next steps are taken.

We also voted to explore the option of a new community-based group to take on the ownership and management of the facility and to have it run in a skills-based board structure.

A more formal board structure will ensure a strong level of governance and set some important policies and procedures to ensure the long-term stability of the facility. It was a key recommendation from an extensive six-month report Council commissioned looking at the best way forward for the facility. There is a strong desire form the community to not only keep the pool open, but to keep it managed by the community – we agree and that’s what we are taking this path.

In the not-too-distant future we hope to launch an expression of interest process for people in the community with the skills needed to join the board. If people don’t come forward and the new board structure can’t proceed, then it will be back to the drawing board and other options for the future of the facility will need to be considered.

We’ll make sure we let you know when we are ready to open that process.

We had some good news for local businesses last week – with the latest Spendmapp data for March revealing another strong month.

Spendmapp captures transaction data and shows how much money is spent in local businesses.

Across March $15.4 million was spent at local businesses right across the Moyne Shire - a 22.96 per cent increase from the same time last year.

Visitors spend was recorded at $11.2 million – which is a 27.22% increase on the same period in 2022.

The long weekend was a huge boost for businesses with events happening right across the Shire –headlined by the Port Fairy Folk Festival. Spend of $3.97 million was recorded across the shire on that weekend – with $3.1 million of that being spent at Port Fairy businesses.

Such strong visitor spending again shows Moyne continued to be a destination of choice.

Learning all things smart phones and tablets

If you or a someone you know wants to learn how to use a smart phone or a tablet to keep in touch with family and friends – the Port Fairy Library has the session for you.

The Digital Literacy for Adults course will give participants the skills needed to live, learn and work in our society where communication and access to information is increasingly through digital technologies, internet, social media and mobile devices.

The first small group session will be held on May 19 from 2pm to 3.30pm. Spaces are limited and you can book by calling the Library on 5568 2248.

The program is being delivered with funding support from the Victorian Government.

Wind farm investments under

MOYNE Shire Council will push prospective wind farm developers to meet a minimum community investment threshold before supporting any future developments.

Councillors resolved at last week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council to do further work and complete further consultation on a set of minimum benchmarks a wind farm company would be requested to provide the community in which they are operating.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster said wind farm companies already offer a range of community investment programs, but it was ad hoc and varied greatly between developments.

“At the moment we have some developments offering annual grants programs to the wider community as low as $300 a turbine and some as high as $3000 a turbine,” she said.

“There are also vast differences between what is happening across Moyne when compared to other areas of the state.

“We have said that there needs to be a level playing field for communities which are impacted by developments. There’s no minimum standard set by the state government or industry, so council will use the guidelines to advocate for the best outcomes possible for host communities.”

Cr Foster said council would not become the beneficiary of these grant funds but was simply trying to establish a set of standards to ensure each community hosting a wind farm benefited at the same level.

“We aren’t proposing a fundamental change to how the programs operate now,” Cr Foster said.

“The companies would continue to work directly with the community to plan a suitable program, but we want those overall investments to reach a minimum standard so host communities are on a level playing field,” she said.

“Council has no decision-making role when it comes to approving wind farm planning permits or setting their conditions but we have a role in advocacy and will use these standards to help drive a better deal for our communities.”

Cr Foster added that council had already spoken with the Minister for Planning, Minister for Local Government and advisors to the Minister for Energy, Resources and Climate Actions about the need for such standards and would continue to advocate strongly on behalf of the community for better outcomes.

The decision came after Moyne Shire councillors voted in September last year to oppose future developments of wind farms until the Victorian Government carried out strategic planning, which would include a threshold on the number of turbines operating in the shire.

Bridging the gap in dairy

ATTRACTING and retaining skilled people to the dairy sector is crucial to maintaining the development of dairy manufacturers’ engineering and other capabilities.

The Gardiner Foundation has taken a proactive approach to overcome this challenge by investing in the Monash University Industry Team Initiative (MITI).

The initiative places small multi-disciplinary teams of students with a dairy manufacturer to solve a specific company challenge over a 12-week period, during the university summer break.

When Jia Han Chew joined MITI in 2014, he didn’t know the opportunities it would bring him.

“The MITI program gives students work experience and exposure to challenges the dairy industry faces, while building interpersonal skills,” Mr Han said.

“It gives us the opportunity to build a professional network while still studying. Over the last few years, I’ve run into a lot of people I met through the MITI program and it helped accelerate a working relationship.”

Today, nine years later, he works as a continuous improvement engineer with Bega.

He has a bachelor’s degree and PhD in chemical engineering from Monash University, and during his MITI program he worked on improving the solubility of powder products.

MITI offers a unique opportunity for participating industry manufacturers to put forward a specific challenge in commercial confidence.

Monash University and the manufacturer decide on a multi-disciplinary team of students at differing stages in their studies,

who are embedded into the company and try to find a solution to this real world challenge.

“Monash is more research focused and students often lack the industry experience,” Mr Han said.

“MITI was able to bridge the gap and offer students industry insights.”

His team completed its program at Murray Goulburn in Cobram.

“We looked at modifying the raw ingredients, changing the amount of calcium and homogenisation pressure,” Mr Han said.

“We found that we had success by modifying the drying condition. By changing the vibratory fluid bed operating conditions, we had some success in improving the solubility of the product.”

His first job after finishing university was in Morwell, working for Lion Dairy and Drinks.

“Moving from the city to the country took some adapting, but I love the country now,” Jia Han said.

“A lot of students are based in the city and wouldn’t have thought of exploring the opportunities available in regional Victoria. MITI helps overcome the fear of the unknown and encourages students to explore what regional areas have to offer.”

Mr Han was born and raised in Malaysia.

“It’s great that the MITI program is open to international students, because they struggle to get the same opportunities as domestic students,” he said.

Since it began in 2014, over 200 students have been exposed to the dairy industry through the MITI program.

These students have gained invaluable exposure to relevant learning opportunities that relate specifically to their studies while at the same time, acquiring hands-on practical experience.

Smiles for miles running out West

WARRNAMBOOL West Primary School students put their best foot forward – and at a fast pace – last Friday.

Children from all year levels donned their school colours to take part in the annual cross-country event, held on the school grounds.

Ribbons and certificates were presented to the three fastest boys

and girls for each age group during a whole school assembly.

Five students have been successful in moving on to the next stage – the district cross-country that will be held at Premier Speedway next Tuesday, May 9.

Congratulations to Summreen Yousufi, Karla Recinos Najarro, Tyller Prescott, Ruby Storer and Tyrian O’Meara.

Residents cash in on power bonus

THE latest Victorian Government figures show thousands of south west residents have cashed in on the state’s power saving bonus.

The figures reveal more than one million Victorian households have cashed in on the $250 payment under the fourth round of the Power Saving Bonus.

In Warrnambool alone, 5040 requests for the power saving bonus were made, along with 298 from Dennington and 284 from Koroit.

More than 166 requests were made from households in Allansford and several hundred from surrounding towns.

Residents have also taken the opportunity to seek the best deal on power charges, with the latest round of the program seeing 40 per cent of applicants across the state find a better energy deal through the Victorian Energy Compare website.

The Victorian Energy Compare website is an independent comparison website, making it easy for Victorians to find a cheaper offer and keeping big energy retailers in check.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews encouraged all households to apply.

“The best way to lower energy bills is to look for a better offer,” he said.

“That’s why we’re encouraging Victorians to take advantage of another round of the Power Saving Bonus to make sure they are on the best deal ahead of winter.”

Applications for the payment can be made through the Victorian Energy Compare website, where customers can quickly and easily find the best energy

offers in their areas.

The Energy Assistance Program – a free service providing energy consumers experiencing hardship with one-onone assistance – has helped over 500 applicants to navigate the energy market, apply for eligible grants and concessions, find and switch to better offers and address billing errors.

For those without internet access, over-the-phone and in-person support is available through one of our Community Outreach Partners, including Brotherhood of St Laurence, Ethnic Community Council Victoria, Good Shepherd, State Trustees and hundreds of Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria. Victorians can also save on their household energy bills through the $1.3 billion Solar Homes Program.

Households which accessed both solar panel and hot water rebates saved up to $1500 on their annual energy bill.

The state government claims Victoria has cut its emissions by more than any other state, tripled the amount of renewable energy and created thousands of jobs as the state eyes the renewable energy target of 95 per cent by 2035.

Labor is also reviving the State Electricity Commission to replace unreliable, privatised coal with clean, government-owned, renewable energy to drive down energy costs and help create 59,000 jobs.

To access the $250 Power Saving Bonus, visit compare.energy.vic.gov. au or call 1800 000 832. To speak to an Energy Assistance Program advocate, call 1800 161 215.

Community enjoys new facilities

Learning, Community and Friendship

AT St Patrick’s

Primary School

in Koroit the smiles on young faces are wide, the facilities are fresh and modern, and staff are committed to providing education to suit the needs of all children.

With recent constructions now complete, the school community is enjoying new junior classrooms, specialist teaching areas and administration area, along with a covered basketball court area and specialist teaching rooms.

The project also saw some upgrades to the school hall, and the location and positioning of the two new classrooms is now allowing the school’s junior students to easily transition between the classroom, play area and undercover space.

“With construction of these areas now complete, students and staff are enjoying a greater ease of movement between all areas, along with the many benefits that new facilities bring,” school principal Nick Murrell said.

“We are extremely excited to have these works complete and with many programs and activities planned for this year I’m sure it will be an exciting and

productive one.”

Catering for the individual needs of students, the school has implemented ReLATE (Reframing Learning and Teaching Environments) in partnership with the MacKillop Institute.

This is a research and evidence informed model supporting schools to create the preconditions for improved teaching, learning and wellbeing.

Adding to this, SunLit (Structured Literacy) is a comprehensive approach to reading instruction that targets all aspects of language, including phonology, phonics, morphology, syntax and semantics.

“By focusing on these foundational elements of language, structured literacy aims to develop strong reading and writing skills in students,” Mr Murrell said.

At St Patrick’s the school is embedded in the Koroit community and, as such, endeavours to be a part of local events.

Once such event is the annual ‘Picnic in the Paddock.’

To be held on Sunday, October 29, this new, annual community event invites families from across the region to enjoy some great family fun.

For more information contact the school on 5565 8208.

Lights, camera, action!

PRODUCTION on a new film has begun in the heart of Terang as local cast and crew prepare to bring a David verses Goliath courthouse thriller to next month’s Warrnambool Storytelling Festival.

Shooting of the film, titled ‘The Tribunal’, is currently under way in Terang and Noorat as the Terang Theatre Troupe look to build upon the success of the inaugural involvement in the storytelling festival last year.

The script for the film was written by Commercial Hotel proprietor Les Cameron, who said the events were based on a true story circa 2003.

“I was living with a woman who had gone from living in poverty with a difficult family situation to owning four properties worth around six million,” he said.

“She bought a property in Dandenong, around 100 metres from the railway station, which at the time cost around $750,000.

“She had all these ideas of developing over four years, she had done nice things such as leaving it for refugees to use, but the government compulsorily acquired the land.

“So not only did it prevent something creative she wanted to do for the community, but she bought it for $750,000, four years later housing prices had gone crazy, but the government was trying to acquire it for $750,000.”

Mr Cameron said the woman had retained a lawyer and prepared for a fight brought VCAT, but was frequently told to temper her expectations as “the government gets what the government wants”.

“They were charging her $125 per minute or something, so one night she came home and said I should be her lawyer,” he said.

“I said I couldn’t possibly, I was just a teacher and the barristers retained by the government were heavy hitters, but I did eventually represent her after much persuasion.”

‘The Tribunal’ follows on from the success of ‘Wimmen Wild’ at the 2022 Warrnambool Storytelling Festival.

‘Wimmin Wild’ was believed to be the first feature film shot and created in Terang, with around 30 locals comprising the cast and crew while primarily shot on an iPhone with a shoestring budget.

Mr Cameron said the latest film was a natural progression of Terang’s cinematic origins, which he hopes to see create future opportunities for film and television in the region.

“If you look at any economic analysis anywhere in the world, to be able to declare yourself a film-friendly precinct can create opportunities in any area,” he said.

“I’ve got my eye not only on what economic value we can have, but we want to encourage people to tell their stories.

“To be able to say I can act, to be able to tell a story, it’s the authentic nature of it which is most important and we’ve shown it can be feasible here.”

‘The Tribunal’ stars a range of local talents including Anne Corbin, Rosemary Knight, Penny Lourey and Christina Lee, who have welcomed the opportunity to be part of the filmmaking experience.

Chris Streitberger, who moved to Terang around two years ago, will draw on his extensive broadcast experience

behind the camera.

In the past he worked with major television networks such as SBS, ABC, Seven and Nine, and relished the opportunity to put his skills to work in a country town.

“It’s challenging, but it’s amazing,” he said.

“The vibe here is very tangible, Terang is a very artistic community.

“I’m finding likeminded people, so it’s been good.”

Actor Christina Lee said not only had her involvement in the Terang Theatre Troupe helped her to create new friendships, but had given her

the opportunity to pursue a form of artistic expression she had long found captivating.

“It’s something I have always been interested in,” she said.

“I did drama at secondary school, where I first got a taste for it, and was involved in the drama group when I first went to teacher’s college.

“When I heard about this group starting, I thought I would just give it a go.”

The Warrnambool Storytelling Festival will run from June 9 through to July 2.

Tickets for the premiere of ‘The Tribunal’ will be available at www. warrnamboolstorytelling.com.au.

Everything about bees and their environment BUZZ the B U Z Z

Are you waggling for World Bee Day?

What is World Bee Day?

The main purpose of World Bee Day events is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival. Simply proclaiming World Bee Day does not do much for bees and other pollinators; the main work of safeguarding their existence still needs to be undertaken.

World Bee Day is an excellent opportunity to put bees at the centre of the national conversation for a day and encourage actions that create more bee-friendly landscapes.

Beekeepers and nature conservationists are united in encouraging improved conditions for bees to build pollination security and to safeguard our food security.

What is World Bee Day?

Slovenia proposed that the United Nations (UN) proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day.

On 20 December 2017, following three years of efforts at the international level, the UN Member States unanimously approved Slovenia’s proposal, thus proclaiming 20 May as World Bee Day.

The purpose of the www.worldbeeday.org. au website is to present the initiative and

its implementation, raise awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping, inform the public of major beekeeping events around the world and celebrate World Bee Day. There’s lot on for World Bee Day here in Victoria, so take a look at https://www.worldbeeday.org.au/region/ vic/ for some great events, including a free webinar that I’ll be speaking at, about Powerful Pollinators, on 21st May.

Why do we need bees?

Food security

Bees – honey bees and the thousands of species of native bees - are important to our livelihood as they help to pollinate most of the crops we eat and many that feed farm animals. Nearly two-thirds of Australia’s agricultural production benefits from bee pollination.

Bee populations, particularly native bees, are under threat. Destruction of their natural habitat, intensive farming practices, and pests and diseases are just some of the complex reasons driving a decline in both the number and diversity of bees.

Without bees, our food security is at risk.

Bees & biodiversity

There are over 20,000 species of bee that exist globally and Australia is home to around 2,000 species of native bee. Native bees have co-evolved with our unique native flora over thousands of years.

Some species of plant can only be pollinated by a particular species of bee. In the absence of pollination, the plant species cannot reproduce so if that bee species dies, so too will the plant.

Without bees, biodiversity is at risk.

Ecosystem health

Bees are keystone species that play a vital role in preserving ecosystem health. Bees provide essential pollination services for plants.

Maintaining plant diversity supports other essential ecosystem services including helping to regulate climate, purify air and water, build soil and recycle nutrients. Without bees, ecosystems are at risk.

Waggle Dance for World Bee Day

Join the hive jive and participate in the Worldwide Waggle Dance for World Bee Day!

Bees communicate in the hive using a waggle dance to tell other bees where to find pollen, nectar and water to drink. You can buzz like a bee and spread your wings to share the importance of bees by doing a human waggle dance! The aim is to have over 20,000 participants, equal to the number of bee species on planet Earth. Encourage friends, family and even your school to be involved. Visit the World Bee Day Waggle Dance Challenge website, dress up in your best bee costume, practice your dance steps, and upload your waggle dance for World Bee Day.

Free tickets now available

FREE registration to one of the biggest parties of the winter is now open – and everyone is invited.

The neon-themed Solstice Search Party in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens will this year be held on June 24 and families are encouraged to grab their free tickets online.

First held in 2022 and attracting over 5,000 attendees, this event is a spin-off of the popular Solstice Searching scavenger hunt – which also makes a return on June 23.

The scavenger hunt invites participants to follow the cryptic clues to find the all-new neon sculptures by artist Carla Obrien, hidden throughout Warrnambool. Attendees at Solstice Search Party can see all of the sculptures from the previous night’s scavenger hunt in one place, as well as explore other light-themed wonders.

One Day Studios will be creating sound and light installations while Nurture in Nature will lead you through a lantern-lit storybook trail.

The event runs from 3pm until 9pm with live music by Leslie D King and the Trembling Shakes, Wade Northcott, Gabby Steel, Matt Price and Good Intentions DJ.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott encouraged everyone to embrace winter and enjoy two amazing nights out.

“Winter Solstice is the darkest time of the year, so what better time to hold a festival celebrating light,”Cr Arnott said.

“It’s dark nice and early so the whole family can rug up, venture out and see what they can discover.

“Both the scavenger hunt and the party in the Botanic Gardens are such great concepts and people have really embraced them.

“Warrnambool is of course known as one of the best places in Australia for whale watching in winter, and what our solstice events aim to do is to provide another compelling reason to visit Warrnambool in the off-peak tourist season.

“While it’s free to attend, we really encourage people to pre-register online to help us gauge the numbers so we can have the right infrastructure in place to help everyone have the best night possible.”

For more information on winter events visit www. warrnambool.vic.gov.au/winter.

You can also visit www.humanitix.com and search “Solstice Search Party” to register for your free ticket.

Clues for the Solstice Searching scavenger hunt will be published on the Warrnambool City Council and Warrnambool Visitor Information Centre Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as on council’s website, on the day of the hunt.

Snakes, ladders and fun times

THERE’S now plenty of snakes to be found in the Pecten Avenue playground.

The popular Warrnambool playspace is now home to some colourful snakes (and ladders) – of the friendly, painted variety.

Thanks to the recent completion of Jimmi Buscombe’s latest public artwork in Warrnambool, visitors to the playground can now enjoy playing snakes and ladders with family and friends.

The 3D-effect game was completed as part of Warrnambool City Council’s ‘Home is where the Art Is’ project.

The project aims to use art and creativity to bring neighbourhoods together by asking ‘how can we make our neighbourhood more friendly?’

The West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House worked with local residents and primary school children to come up with three projects they would like to bring to their neighbourhood.

The first two projects – yarn-bombing trees in Laverock Road and decorating old shoes to use for pot plants – were completed in October 2022.

The snakes and ladders game, created by Jimmi Buscombe, coincides with the renewal of the Pecten Avenue playground, which was completed last month.

Mayor Debbie Arnott said she was excited to see the finished product and the benefits it will bring to the neighbourhood.

“One of the reasons why this project is so special is because it’s led by the local community,” she said.

“Last year the West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House worked with local residents and school children to see what projects they thought could make their neighbourhood an even friendlier place and they came up with three wonderful ideas.

“They spent hours knitting and crocheting together before yarn bombing trees in Laverock Road, they decorated old shoes and repurposed

them as pot plants, and the snakes and ladders game created by Jimmi Buscombe is the third aspect.

“With the playground renewal scheduled for Pecten Avenue in March, it made perfect sense to line this up with the Home is Where the Art is project, with a concrete pad built especially for Jimmi to create the snakes and ladders game.

“We know how important strong neighbourhood connections can be in creating happy and healthy communities, and public art projects like this, especially where the locals themselves are involved in the whole process, are just so terrific to see.”

Mr. Buscombe said the response from the community had been positive and immediate.

“There were so many kids, and the moment I took off the bunting and said “okay, it’s dry” they just stormed onto it, which is great. It’s exactly what it’s for,” he said.

“Seeing how many kids are here now that the park has been re-done is

amazing.

“Public art is art for the public, so if you can add an element of interactivity to it, it’s great.

“We found a couple of examples online (of snakes and ladders games) which were kind of 3D, then I had the idea of doing the A-frame ladders which take it to the next level. It was just heaps of fun.”

Still to come is a small concrete marker which not only shows you the ideal viewing angle, but acts as a dice roll mechanism.

The marker is surrounded by six dice squares with numbers on them, so you can spin around and wherever you point, that’s the dice roll.

Residents are invited to a community event at the Pecten Avenue playground next Wednesday, May 10 from 1pm until 3pm to celebrate Neighbourhood House Week.

There will be a free sausage sizzle, fresh fruit, coffee van, face painting, kite flying, children’s games and live music.

Orford and district table tennis results

PORT Fairy has opened its account in the Orford and District Table Tennis Association with a win over Glengleeson.

Attunga just pipped Warrnambool Vikings for ladder leader, while Myndarra is the other undefeated team after its win this week.

It’s believed Myndarra’s winning streak may end when they run into the Vikings - but will Port Fairy sneak into the four at Myndarra’s expense, in a week that the top sides play the lower ranked teams?

Week three will see Warrnambool Vikings v Myndarra

Warrnambool Vikings may have too much fire power for the Myndarra team while the undefeated Attunga will face Orford.

Port Fairy will have the chance to make it two consecutive wins when it faces Tarrone.

Warrnambool Warriors will most likely be singing a happy tune back to the big smoke after playing Glengleeson.

Results from week two: Warrnambool Warriors lost to Warrnambool Vikings 3.11/8.24. Rehan (Vikings) won his three rubbers only after a come from behind win in his rubber against Warriors’ Peter Owen, 9/11, 9/11, 11/5, 11/7 and 11/6.

Peter then won his two rubbers in four games.

Another tight rubber was the first doubles which Vikings won 17/15, 14/12 and 11/6.

Myndarra defeated Orford 6.19.305/5.16.301.

The absence of David Rowbottom (Orford) opened the gate for a

Myndarra win.

Aaron Rowbottom (Myndarra) won his three rubbers but not without a fight from Orford’s Russell Hussey in the night’s last rubber, when he won in four games.

Ally Rowbottom won two rubbers for Myndarra while Russell was best for Orford winning two rubbers. He was supported by Jayden Clapp and Chloe Bartlett with one each.

Attunga defeated Tarrone 9.30/2.9.

Val Wortley (Attunga) won her three rubbers with Ian and Kelly Wortley two each.

David Warhurst, after winning two tough rubbers, was Tarrone’s winner.

David defeated Kelly 11/5, 5/11, 8/11, 11/3 and 12/10.

His win against Ian was a four-game rubber.

Tarrone was unable to make any headway in either of the double’s rubbers.

Glengleeson lost to Port Fairy 4.145/7.27.

Port Fairy was made to work for its first win with six of the rubbers extended and a number of games going over the mandatory first to 11 –the longest went 17/15.

Port Fairy’s Ray Young won his three rubbers after being extended by Peter Drendel (Glengleeson) 6/11, 13/11, 11/8 and 12/10.

Tony Storer (Port Fairy) played the longest game defeating Bill Lyons 10/12, 13/11, 17/15 and 11/2.

Unofficial ladder:

Attunga 8 points, 18 rubbers, 60 games; Warrnambool Vikings 8, 18, 56; Myndarra 8, 12, 39; Warrnambool Warriors 4, 10, 38; Port Fairy 4, 9, 38; Orford 0, 9, 29; Tarrone 0, 7, 24; Glengleeson 0, 5, 18.

Darlington speedway kicks into top gear

DARLINGTON Speedway came alive last weekend, with the first of three race meetings to be held in May.

The Mortlake Speedway Club season has begun and although the start is later than normal (beyond the control of volunteers) those who attended the event on Saturday were thrilled with the night’s racing.

The race program included production sedans, standard saloons, hot rods and junior sedans.

The production sedans saw Portland’s John Calderwood win a heat race and Shaun Queale of the Wimmera win two heats before the feature event over 15 laps produced a great finish by the two heat winners.

Calderwood held on to defeat the quicker Queale, with Heath Riley from Hamilton finishing third and Dean Hughes and Haydn Riley closing out the top five. Colac’s Miller Throckmorton was a favourite in the Top Stars category of the national junior sedan class, and he began with a win in the first heat race.

He backed that up in the second race although it was much closer with pressure from Jayden Lock before Throckmorton defeated Lock, Jake Bradley, and Pary Das in the final.

In the developing juniors’ New Stars category of the national division Jackson Warrener from Portland, a brand-new racer this season, won the first heat race by almost one complete lap while James

Peacock took victory in the second heat. In the feature event Peacock claimed the win in another close result.

In second place was Cruz Carlin from Portland, Tyler Wilson from the same club, then Charlotte Leerson and Taylor Hose.

Eight-cylinder fans were not left out either, with the Hot Rods of the Speedway Drivers Association of Victoria given three heat races and a final.

Andy Kemp won his first ever feature in the class, defeating Shannon Meakins, Kali Hovey and Tony Green.

For the Victorian Speedway Council Junior 1200cc sedan title race, Mortlake club hosted day one of qualifying before Daylesford club hosted the second day of racing at Darlington.

Leek (representing Drouin) went on to claim the title on day two ahead of Baxter, Riley Taylor, Sheedy and Andrew Mitchell.

Mortlake’s feature class of the day was the Standard Saloons.

Around 15 competitors put in a great day’s racing with Portland’s Cody McCabe coming out on top.

Racing for the Mortlake club returns on Saturday May 13 with the Hanna Memorial for street stock in memory of local Mortlake racer Brendon Hannabury. Also on the program will be the Col Grist Memorial to honour the super rodaligned Grist family, along with formula 500s in seniors and juniors.

‘Bool comes alive

NOT even rain and overcast skies could dampen the spirits of racegoers at the Bool this week.

The three-day May Race Carnival once again attracted thousands trackside and organisers couldn’t be happier.

“The atmosphere has just been absolutely amazing; not even the cold, wet and windy Warrnambool weather has kept crowds away which has been great,” Warrnambool Racing Club interim CEO Carl Hufer said.

“We had just under 8000 people through the gate on the first two days and we’re expecting the same today (Thursday).

“The program has run very smoothly, which is a credit to everyone involved, and I’ve been absolutely blown away by the popularity of this year’s carnival. We’ve seen some great racing.”

Day one (Tuesday) saw the ladies dress in high fashion to enjoy the iconic ladies’ luncheon while others trackside took advantage of the on-site catering and various marquees.

The Brierly Steeplechase, over 3450m, was one of the highlights of day one. This was won by the Symon Wildetrained ‘Britannicus’, ridden by Aaron Kurum.

Second place in the Brierly went to ‘Flying Agent’ (trained by Amy McDonald, ridden by Lee Horner), with ‘Valac’ in third (trained and ridden by Steven Pateman).

Persistent rain overnight on Tuesday saw the track rated a ‘heavy 10’ for Wednesday’s program.

Day two of the carnival featured the Sovereign Resort Galleywood Hurdle over 3200m – won by ‘Saunter Boy’ trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and ridden by Steven Pateman, and the listed Midfield Group Wangoom Handicap (1200m) which was won by ‘Outlaws Revenge’ trained by Daniel Bowman, ridden by Dean Yendall.

Day three of the carnival (yesterday) featured the highly anticipated Brandt Grand Annual Steeplechase over 5500m and the Sungold Milk Warrnambool Cup

over 2350m.

The results of both events – which attracted several local entries – were not yet available when the Warrnambool Weekly went to print, however Mr Hufer said early Thursday morning he was again expecting a great day’s racing.

“The grand annual is always one of the main events of the carnival and I’m sure this year will be no exception,” he said.

“The track is again rated a heavy 10 but I’m sure we’ll have another great day of racing.

“The May Race Carnival really has put Warrnambool on the map and it’s something we can all be proud of.”
