Heavy load breaks the darkness

THE dark of night was broken with the sights of flashing lights as a 372-tonne superload made its way through the heart of Warrnambool in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The impressive Hitachi power transformer arrived in town shortly after 1am on its way to its final destination at the Tarrone Terminal Station.

Rolling along on 128 tyres, the heavy load left the Port of Geelong late last

Sunday night and travelled through to Cobden on Monday, where it spent the day, before leaving later that night to make its way to Warrnambool.

In order to reduce the impact on other road users, and to allow for a safer travel environment, the 78-metre long load was moved at night, travelling at speeds of up to 60 km/h – and slowing to around five km/h when travelling over bridges and around corners.

Due to its 4.5 metre width, the superload didn’t take up the entire road, proving

THE TYRE FACTORY

motorists the opportunity to pass under supervision.

Traffic management officers and load escorts accompanied the superload for the entire journey, making sure that roads were safe during and after the move. The officers also ensured the vehicle manoeuvred safely around corners, temporarily removing signs and lights, placing steel supports over existing drainage and then putting everything back in place once the superload passed through.

Council questions windfarm application

Moyne Shire Council has expressed disappointment a planning permit application for a new six turbine wind farm at Garvoc has been lodged with the Minister for Planning with no prior community engagement.

Council officers had minimal information about the planned wind farm until the application was lodged.

While Council has no formal approval role in decision-making when it comes

to wind farm applications, developers generally engage with council and keep them informed of their plans.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster said it is usually standard for a developer to engage with the community they plan to build in.

“On a broader scale, that hasn’t happened in this situation. The first anyone knew about this was when the application was lodged with the Minister,” Cr Foster said.

“I’m sure they have engaged with the landowners who will host turbines, but there has been no engagement with the

wider community.

“It’s disappointing and goes to the point we have been making about social license for wind farms being non-existent. Actions like this don’t help the situation.

“Council will make a submission to the application process which include real and meaningful engagement with community.”

Cr Foster said now the planning permit application has been lodged, it immediately impacts all land within 1km of the boundary of the site.

“This now means for all land in the

farming zone, a planning permit will be now required for any proposed dwelling, extension to existing dwellings, accommodation uses and rural worker housing,”

It’s disappointing that the residents around the proposed development haven’t been consulted or engaged and now they have restrictions placed on them.

“I would ask the Minister to consider the lack of community engagement and consultation when considering the planning permit application.”

Turning heads

IT’S not every day you see two miniature donkeys walking down the main street of a small country town….unless you’re in Panmure.

On an almost daily basis, local Terry Lane walks his two pet miniature Mediterranean donkeys Basil and Baxter – turning heads and slowing traffic as motorists “take a second look.”

The trio can often be seen walking along the side of the highway, enjoying the fresh air and, more often than not, being stopped by passers-by.

“Quite often people drive by, notice us and then do a u-turn and come back for a pat and a chat,” Terry said.

“I guess it’s not every day you see donkeys going for a leisurely walk –unless you’re here in Panmure.”

Terry and his wife Sharon, who also own two alpacas fondly named Charlie and

Marley, have been the proud owners of Basil and Baxter for more than two years.

“Sharon saw an ad with a photo of Basil so we went and had a look,” Terry said.

“Basil was at Green Hills, out the back of Penshurst, and we both just fell in love with him. But he needed a mate so we got searching and it was only two months later that Baxter arrived here in a horse truck from Glenrowan.

“They’ve fitted in really well with our alpacas at home and I walk them around town most nights. It’s good for them, and for me.

“It’s amazing how many people stop to have a pat and want to know all about them. They’re very sociable animals.”

Living off pasture hay and oaten hay –and the odd carrot as a treat – Basil and Baxter seem right at home when in the spotlight.

“They love all the attention.”

PORT Fairy’s St Patrick’s Primary School has been nominated for two categories in this year’s Sustainability Victoria Awards.

This recognition is based on the work of the school’s sustainability group during 2022 and 2023.

Year five/six teacher Benson Steere and the sustainability leaders will travel

BACKYARD

SAND

to the MCG on June 15 to showcase their projects and be present for the announcement of the award winners.

“We are extremely proud, as a school, to have been recognised for these awards,” Mr Steere said.

The two categories are Student Action Team of the Year and ResourceSmart School of the Year.

The school’s sustainability team, which involves 93 students, runs school-wide activities based on studying and working on natural resources.

In order to finance future activities, the team runs a fortnightly sustainability raffle with the prize being fresh

produce from the garden.

Each month the group also participates in a beach monitoring activity run by the Port Fairy Coastal Group.

Students from St Patrick’s also supported the Port Fairy Coastal Group by recording and monitoring data on erosion levels at two local beaches.

The collected data is used in literacy and numeracy classroom activities, with the findings later reported to the community.

“The passion of these students is so contagious that a nearby school has joined them in their coastal mission,” Mr Steere said.

Shearwater session

HAVE you ever wanted to find out more about the local Shorttailed Shearwater population?

An informative evening featuring a discussion by environmental educator Jodie Honan entitled Short tales of Short-tailed Shearwaters will be held at the La Bella Room on the ground floor of the Pavilion Café on Wednesday, May 24 at 7pm.

The Short-tailed Shearwater is a migratory species that breeds on both Griffiths Island and Middle Island, travelling all the way from the Aleutian Islands near Alaska every year.

The Short-tailed Shearwater was at one stage one of Australia’s most abundant bird species.

As the fledglings are attracted to light, there is a program involving switching off street lights to prevent disruption of their night-time migration.

Hosted by Warrnambool Coastcare

Landcare Network (WCLN), the evening will also include Deakin student Nikita Dubberly’s research on metal concentrations in Little Penguins from Middle Island and St Kilda. Organiser Lillian Maher will provide an introduction to WCLN and the Middle Island Little Penguin monitoring program.

Later in the evening Lillian will present information on the camera and acoustic monitoring program to occur in the 2023-24 breeding season. Refreshments and supper will be provided at the evening.

People wishing to attend this free event are encouraged to RSVP via email to facilitator@wcln.org.au by Monday, May 22 May, including any dietary requirements.

A dream comes true for Sue

The Paper Store Port Fairy’s owner and graphic designer Sue Bruce finally realised a long-held dream when she opened in Sackville Street at the end of January this year, combining her existing business Azeus Print & Design with her love of beautiful stationery.

This unique little shop in the heart of Port Fairy is full of well selected stationery and gifts, many of which are Australian made. There is a lovely bygone feeling on walking into this store, the smell of paper and ink and a sense of years gone by.

The Paper Store offers exclusive greetings cards, notebooks, journals, art supplies, quality wrapping paper and giftware with a focus on Australian products and suppliers. Letter writing sets and note card sets are very popular, Sue says, as adults as well as children are returning to the joys of giving and receiving a handwritten letter. So amazing to see in this digital age!

‘Bool turns pink

THERE was a sea of pink in Pertobe Road last Sunday as families and friends gathered to take part in the annual Mother’s Day Classic.

Much to the delight of organisers, a large number of runners and walkers enjoyed the seven kilometre and three kilometre events, with many dressed in pink in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation. In perfect conditions, participants enjoyed the opportunity to spend time outdoors while raising much-needed funds into breast cancer research.

For many, the event was followed by Mother’s Day celebrations with loved ones.

Making a difference

VOLUNTEERS are the heart of the community, making a difference in the lives of many people on a daily basis.

National Volunteer Week 2023 (which runs until this Sunday) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and this year follows the theme of ‘The Change Makers.’

Warrnambool mayor Debbie Arnott this week took the opportunity to thank volunteers for all that they do.

“Warrnambool simply wouldn’t be the vibrant, liveable place that it is without the quiet efforts of an army of incredible volunteers,” she said.

“Earlier this month council allocated $110,000 to 29 community groups via its Community Development Fund.

“Looking through the list of recipients, every single one of them would have volunteer involvement, and it just shows how vital volunteering is in so many areas of our community.”

Cr Arnott said volunteers also played an incredibly important role at council. Its meals-on-wheels volunteers deliver 20,000 meals each year to support older residents in the community, volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre provide a warm welcome to Warrnambool for visitors, and there are many costumed characters at Flagstaff Hill who volunteer their time.

“That’s just a few of the many areas at council where volunteers are involved, and last night (Thursday) we held a special event to officially show our gratitude.”

New research released by Volunteering Australia this week indicated that following a sharp drop-off in volunteer rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteer numbers were on the rise with over two-thirds (69 per cent) of volunteers now back in person.

“It’s encouraging to see that volunteer numbers are beginning to recover, but as I’m sure many community groups locally and across Australia would attest, we are still some way off prepandemic levels,” Cr Arnott said.

“One of the things COVID-19 reinforced is the importance of community connections, both for the happiness of individuals, but also as a way of building a resilient, caring society.

“This National Volunteer Week, I’d encourage everyone to have a look at some of the volunteering roles available in Warrnambool, or create your own, and have fun while helping others.

“Volunteering is one of the most powerful things you can do to make a difference in your community.”

Staying connected

A NEW app, giving elderly residents access to their weekly appointments at the touch of a screen, is proving beneficial to many.

Warrnambool-based home care package provider La Bella Life has launched its very own mobile device app, linking carers and families.

The recent brainchild of friends

Meridith McKinnon and Tricia O’Keeffe, the mobile app can be used by both home care clients and carers, allowing them to view upcoming care shifts, receive instant notification of changes to shifts and view all the services provided to a client.

“Many of our clients are very capable of using technology to communicate with their friends and family and perform online tasks such as banking or shopping, so this new mobile app has been a great addition for them to be involved in managing their own care package,” said Ms O’Keeffe. The app can also be used by client families who are involved in their daily lives, supporting them to continue living independently.

Clients Carmel and Harold Stoll jumped at the opportunity to use the app to manage their own home care packages and

said it makes planning their week easier.

“We have in-home care or respite up to six days a week and before the app I felt like I was chasing my tail to know

which day our appointments were booked for,” Carmel said.

“Now, when Harold asks me who’s coming today, I can go straight to the app and see who our carer is, what time they’re scheduled for and if there’s

been any last-minute changes or alterations.”

The Stolls both agree the app is a great tool and very user friendly.

“I encourage everyone to give using the app a go; I’m always

telling people how great it is and showing them how it works. I don’t think you’re ever too old to learn new tricks.”

The La Bella Life Carers app is available from the app store and Google Play

Big win for Cats

ALLANSFORD’S senior footballers thrilled their home crowd last weekend with a 64-point victory over South Rovers.

The Cats, currently sitting sixth on the Warrnambool District ladder – just percentage below Russells Creek – got off to a strong start, adding six goals to the scoreboard while containing South to 22 points.

The home side continued its momentum in the second quarter, adding a further five majors to go into the main break with a handy 38-point lead.

The last half saw the Cats dominate all over the ground, kicking seven goals, seven behinds while containing South to just three goals, five.

Final scores were Allansford 18.13.121 to South Rovers 8.9.57.

Best players for the home team were Zavier Mungean, Aiden Gordon, Zach Jamieson, Robert Hare, Mitchell Gristede and Bradley Edge.

A scoreless last quarter proved costly for Allansford’s reserves last weekend, going down to South Rovers by eight points, 5.6.36 to 6.9.45.

Best for the Cats were Wayne Parry, Conor Dickson, Jeremy Ellis, Dylan Dorman, Darren Kelly and Brett Membrey.

Goals went to Ben Lenehan (2) and one each from Kalin Jans, Membrey and Shaun Watson.

Orford and district table tennis

NEW windows in the Orford Hall, which allow moonlight in, may help players see the ball better – and they certainly improve the look of the hall.

The installation of LED lighting used fully last season made a big difference to playing and general use of the hall.

Warrnambool Vikings are now a game clear on top of the ladder with Attunga, Warrnambool Warriors and Port Fairy rounding out the four.

Glengleeson jumped from last to sixth with their win this week.

Either Orford or Tarrone will open their accounts next week when they play each other.

In week five, Warrnambool Vikings are expected to bring to an end Port Fairy’s winning run.

Orford versus Tarrone should be a close 6/5 encounter; much will depend on player availability for Orford and either teams’ ability to win one or both the doubles rubbers.

Predictions are a victory to Orford, if Russel Hussey can defeat David Warhurst, if not Tarrone will win Myndarra will face Glengleeson. Myndarra, led by Aaron and Ally Rowbottom, should be too strong for Glengleeson without the Drendel combination.

Warrnambool Warriors versus Attunga will be the battle for second spot on the ladder, with the loser relegated to third.

Patience will be the name of this encounter!

Don’t expect this match to finish before midnight as both sides can play the long game, not only extended game points but five game rubbers too.

Even the points can go so long that the watchers are either hypnotised or gone to sleep.

In their last encounter in 2022 Warriors took the points 6/5, previous Attunga had the upper hand. Both Warriors - Peter Owen and Neil Ford – will need to win their three rubbers, or the Wortley family will come out winners.

Results from week four:

Attunga lost to Warrnambool Vikings 3.11/8.27.

Warrnambool Vikings’ Rehan Icbal and Dom Angarano both won their three rubbers.

Dom had to withstand a long rubber before defeating Val Wortley 12/10, 5/11, 9/11, 11/8 and 11/8. By winning both doubles, Vikings rounded out the win.

Port Fairy defeated Orford 7.20/4.16.

Orford’s Russell Hussey won his three rubbers (it’s that new bat) while all of Port Fairy won two rubbers each in a night where only three games went past the mandatory 11 points and only two rubbers were extended.

Glengleeson defeated Tarrone 6.23.363/5.16.330.

Going into the last rubber at 5/5 Glengleesons’ Gareth Spring defeated Steven Young from Tarrone to take the four points for the night.

David Warhurst (Tarrone) won his three rubbers after being challenged by Gareth in a five-game rubber 11/3, 11/8, 3/11, 11/13 and 11/8.

The game points indicate why this was a close night; four rubbers extended, many games also long, 14/12 being the longest.

Both Gareth and Bill Lyon won two rubbers, while

John Homan after a six-year absence also won a rubber.

Tarrone’s Steven Young won a rubber and teamed to win a doubles.

Myndarra lost to Warrnambool Warriors 4.13/7.24. All Warrnambool Warriors players won two rubbers while Aaron Rowbottom (Myndarra) won his three rubbers.

Both Neil Ford and Marshall Worthington challenged Aaron, taking him into the fourth game of their rubber. Marshall found it particularly hard trying to pick the spin/slice Aaron is able to produce on the table tennis ball.

Unofficial ladder:

Warrnambool Vikings 16 points, 34 rubbers, 109 games; Attunga 12, 31, 101; Warrnambool Warriors 12, 26, 89; Port Fairy 12, 23, 80; Mydarra 8,19, 63; Glengleeson 4,13, 51; Tarrone 0, 16, 58; Orford 0, 14, 52.

13 and under – Allansford defeated South Rovers 25-6.

Rebels head to Ikon

TALENTED South Warrnambool junior footballer Maggie Johnstone will head to Carlton’s Ikon Park this weekend with the GWV Rebels squad.

Johnstone, who has performed well with the under 16s Vic Country program, will be looking to back up her strong performances with the Rebels on Sunday. She will be joined by South’s Olivia Wolter who is back in the 24-member Rebels squad after strong performances representing her club and school.

Warrnambool’s Alysha Ralston and Lily Jenkins (emergency) have also been

named in the squad for this weekend.

The GWV Rebels girls will take to the ground for the first time in five weeks against the Gold Coast Suns Academy team on Sunday.

It’s been a busy five weeks off for the girls, who have been entwined back at their community clubs and within their school programs.

“It’s been great to see the girls back at their local clubs, fully buying into the programs, not just on the field but also off the field,” talent operations lead Brooke Brown said.

“To see the girls giving back to their

clubs by volunteering in the canteen, as an umpire, a runner, or a water carrier has been delightful to see.”

This Sunday’s match will be a great test for the squad.

“It’s been so good to be back training after the community break,” head coach Sally Riley said.

“The squad is 95 per cent fully fit and players have worked on things over the break, so team selection wasn’t easy this week.

“To see the likes of Olivia Wolter back in the team after taking on feedback and showing resilience to continue to improve

shows reward for effort and that’s why she is back in the team.”

Riley said training had been “a buzz” this week, with the first match in five weeks approaching.

“Gold Coast Suns are coming off a win against the Brisbane Lions Academy last weekend and they are a fit and fast outfit with some really strong, key talls so we’ll have to bring our best for four quarters to beat them,” she said.

Sunday’s game is part of a double-header with the boys’ program.

13 and under – Allansford defeated South Rovers 25-6.

Narrow win for Saints

KOROIT returned to the winners’ list last Saturday with a narrow fourpoint win over the Blues.

Coming off a 62-point loss at the hands of top-side South Warrnambool in round four, the Saints were keen to get back on the board last weekend.

In perfect conditions at Reid Oval on Saturday, the third-placed Saints got an early jump on the home side, kicking six majors in the first quarter while keeping the Blues to just two.

To their credit, the Blues fought back hard in the second quarter, adding two goals six to the scoreboard while restricting the Saints to just one behind.

The Saints held a slim eight-point lead going into the third but piled on four majors for the term.

The final quarter proved a tight contest between the two, with the Blues almost taking a come-from-behind victory –falling just four points short on the siren.

Final scores Koroit 10.11.71 to Warrnambool 8.19.67.

Best for the Saints were Paddy O’Sullivan, Thomas Baulch, Jack Block, Finn O’Sullivan, Clem Nagorcka and Tom Couch while for the Blues, Reggie Mast, Rhys Jansen van beek, Nicholas Hooker, Will Lord, Daniel Weymouth and Jye Turland were among the best.

Tom Couch booted five for Koroit and was well supported by teammates Jayden Whitehead with two and singles from Matthew Bradley, Connor Byrne and Paddy O’Sullivan.

For the Blues, Jackson Bell and Damien McCorkell kicked two each, while Sam Cowling, Rhys Jansen van beek, Harry Ryan and Jed Turland added one each.

The loss left the Blues in seventh spot on the Hampden ladder, with just two wins on the board but only a game out of the five – percentage behind sixth-placed Cobden and a game behind North Warrnambool Eagles who round out the top five.

Koroit will take on the fast-improving Camperdown at Leura Oval tomorrow, in a third versus fourth match-up.

In other Hampden League matches this weekend, the Blues will host Hamilton, Portland will travel to Cobden to take on the Bombers, Terang Mortlake will host South Warrnambool in a top-of-the-table clash while North Warrnambool will be home to Port Fairy.

In the reserves, the Blues proved too strong for the Saints, 12.12.84 to 4.3.27.

McKenzie Royals booted three for Warrnambool, while Isaac Duerden and Finn Radley added two each and Nicholas Cowan, Darcy Dobson, Matt Holt, Steven Lampton and Noah Turland each added one.

Among the best for the Blues were Jordan Foott, Steven Lampton, McKenzie Royals, Declan Hoffman, Jack Dowd and Nicholas Cowan.

In last week’s under 18.5s match at Reid, the Saints enjoyed a 35-point victory over the Blues, 9.10.64 to 4.5.29.

Best for the winning side were Harry Noonan, Zaine Atkins, Talor Byrne, Jordan Lathwell, Jag McInerney and Connor McDonald while for the Blues, Sam Carter, Sam Barker, Hugh Morgan, Kye Brereton, Lachie Cook and Ryan Barnes were best.
