Record-breaking donation
A $100,000 cheque, presented to the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute yesterday afternoon, marks the biggest milestone in the Gillin Boys Foundation’s three-year history.
The Gillin family, of Warrnambool, is well known across the district for the incredible work it has done to create Muscular Dystrophy awareness and raise much-needed funds for further research into the disease in the search for a cure.
From 2016 to February 2020 the Gilly family raised more than $150,000 which was shared between Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation and Muscular Dystrophy Australia. With the inception of the Gillin Boys Foundation in 2020, the organisation has managed to donate a further $280,000 to assist with research and clinical trials.
“When Aaron and I decided to start raising money to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy, we knew it wouldn’t help us,” Christopher said.
“We also lost our cousins Ben and Zach to the disease and wanted part of our legacy to be helping give other families like ours a fighting chance to be treated for the disease, or better yet, cured.”
Sadly Aaron passed away in 2017 at the age of 24, giving Christopher even further incentive to carry on raising awareness and funds.
Christopher, together with board chair Peter Headon and secretary Ellie Fitzgerald, welcomed Murdoch Children’s Research Institute scientists Chantal Coles and Peter Houweling to Warrnambool yesterday to make the presentation.
“We cannot be happier to be able to make this substantial contribution to this amazing research organisation, which is leading the way into helping find a cure for muscular dystrophy,” Christopher said.
“Aaron and I, along with our parents Ashley and Mandy, started this mission from humble beginnings back in 2016 by selling green shoelaces and stickers, and to be here to present $100,000 in one hit really does defy belief.”
Also at the presentation was Murdoch Children’s Research Institute philanthropy manager Katherine Gill and associate Rebecca Harford.
“Today is a special day for the Gillin Boys Foundation, and a day that not just the Gillin family should be proud of, but those who have donated money to our cause to find a cure for this insidious disease,” foundation chair Peter Headon said.
“To think that a family from Warrnambool has managed
to contribute almost half a million dollars to research into Muscular Dystrophy in just over six years is astounding.”
Mr Headen said yesterday’s donation was made possible through the contributions and support of people living not only in the south west but also right across Australia.
“This donation is the result of the efforts and contributions made by those who have helped host fundraisers and have, themselves, donated to Chris and Aaron’s plight,” Mr Headen said.
“While the foundation has had the opportunity to provide this amount to the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, it’s because of the generosity of our supporters that this has been made possible.”
Receiving the donation, philanthropy manager Katherine Gill said the money would go a long way towards helping find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy, in particular Duchenne.
“We have a core focus on all strains of Muscular Dystrophy, but the Duchenne strain is at the top of the priority list and it is fitting that Christopher, his family and the Gillin Boys Foundation made this contribution today as Duchenne is what has affected their family the most.
“It’s stories like theirs that inspire us every day to continue the work we are doing.”
The next major fundraising event will be the 2023 Gillin Boys Foundation telethon – a music event featuring local and nationally acclaimed artists on Friday June 23.

Racing did not disappoint
Dear Sir,

I want to congratulate the Warrnambool Racing Club on another outstanding May Race Carnival.
Topics to be discussed will include defining customers, marketing, sourcing, operations, people, OH&S, and management.
Through the boot camp, participants will refine their ideas and prototype, ready for the pitch event where they will have the opportunity to pitch in front of local businesses, possible investors and win $10,000, $5000 or $3000 towards their business idea.
Mayor Karen Foster said she looked forward to seeing what initiatives come from the program. “This is a fantastic program which helps turn dreams into reality,” Cr Foster said.
“It’s so exciting to think the next big thing could be right here in our backyard and I’m looking forward to hearing what ideas are put forward.”

Poignant insight from war vet
A BOOK by former Warrnambool local Rob deKok, inspired by his experiences in the Vietnam War, has been described as ‘a poignant masterpiece’ by readers.
The fiction novel, ‘The Clearing’ follows Tim (a conscript) from 1969 to 1999 – from his return from Vietnam to the last night of the century as he struggles with PTSD.
Throughout that time Tim has been carrying a personal souvenir from the Vietnam war, a diary he took from the one man he killed.
That man was Khai, a Viet Cong soldier.
Like Tim, Khai’s story is told in time-jumps of a larger life span.
However, unlike Tim’s chapters, each of Khai’s unfold back into his past.
Turning the pages of Khai’s story compresses two bloody decades in his homeland into personal significance.
After 30 years of battling his personal demons, Tim finally seeks out a translator for Khai’s shattered journal.
It is the weave of both these lives, and their fatal encounter, which provides the make-up for ‘The Clearing’.
Having previously been published by several wellknown companies, Mr deKok (who now lives in Adelaide) was encouraged to write ‘The Clearing’ after receiving an Arts South Australia grant.
Alongside the grant, he also received the Nova award for best new poem at Adelaide Writers’ Week.
“While I no longer live in Warrnambool I have many fond memories of the town,” Mr deKok said.
“I grew up in Warrnambool and it was my point of embarkation when I was drafted into the Vietnam war in 1970.”
Despite his experience as a writer and a writing tutor, it took Mr deKok almost 20 years to get the book right
– to write towards one shot, one bullet and one death from both sides of the action, and about the deep effect that combat has on the survivors.
“The Clearing is a landmine brought back from Vietnam, buried for 30 years and now detonated in a barely-controlled explosion,” he said.
To date, readers have describe the book as ‘full of powerful and haunting imagery… of extraordinary poignancy … crafted by Rob’s superb imagination and polished by his craftsmanship.’
A special launch of ‘The Clearing’ will take place at the Warrnambool RSL from 7pm on Thursday, May 25.

Fox baiting program expands
TO help further protect native birds and animals, including the penguin colony on Middle Island, Warrnambool council is expanding its fox baiting program.
The usual springtime baiting in key fox activity areas is being complemented with an additional program from May 15 until June 23 – just prior to the fox breeding season.
Bait will be laid on council-managed land west of Thunder Point, in areas of Lake Pertobe, along the foreshore at Pickering Point and behind the skate park.
Warrnambool City Council acting director city infrastructure Julie Anderson said a carefully planned and fully compliant fox baiting program was an important measure to kerb the threat posed by foxes.
“Birds and animals native to Warrnambool just aren’t equipped to deal with an introduced apex predator like the European red fox,” she said.
“The reality is that foxes are a threat that will never be eliminated, but it’s important to take steps like targeted baiting programs to limit their impact as much as possible.
“We have had positive results with
baiting in the past, and the aim is to continue this success with an additional baiting program to further protect our native wildlife, especially the Little Penguin colony on Middle Island.”
Ms Anderson encouraged all pet owners to familiarise themselves with the baited areas and to make sure their animals stay well clear.
“Pets are banned from all baited areas during the baiting program and for four weeks after it finishes,” she said.
“The baited areas will be clearly signed, but we would urge everyone to visit our website and look at our fox baiting map.
“The bait is designed to target foraging carnivores. It is a meat-based bait that will be buried away from any paths, and the location of each piece will be recorded via GPS so staff can remove them at the end of the program.
“The risk of secondary poisoning – a bird or animal being impacted after foraging on a fox carcass – is also very low.”
Ms Anderson said the poison used is called para-aminopropiophenone, more commonly known as PAPP.
As well as being considered more humane than the most common alternative, 1080, there is also the potential for an antidote to be
administered if a cat or dog were to ingest it.
“There is only a very short time, about an hour, between an animal eating poison bait and an antidote being effective,” Ms Anderson said.
“So if you believe your pet may have been in a baited area and you notice any unusual or uncharacteristic behaviour, especially blue discolouration of the tongue and gums, lethargy and loss of limb function, you need to take it to
a vet that carries the antidote straight away.”
Any pet suspected of PAPP poisoning should be taken to The Vet Group Wollaston, at 59 Mortlake Road Warrnambool (5561 6911) or the Warrnambool Veterinary Clinic at 514 Raglan Parade (5559 0222).
Residents who find fox carcasses on their property can contact council on 5559 4800 to have them removed.

Kindness in giving
MANY hands make light work – and they sure can make a difference in the world.
A group of local women who took part in Social Quilting for Good, which was part of the Progressing Cobden and Cobden Business Network-led Cobden Connection and Kindness Campaign, helped create a number of quilts.
The quilts were recently donated to the Mackillop Family Services on Friday to be given to foster children in the district.
Cobden’s Helen Smith said 13 women took part in the sessions when ever they had the
time free.
“Quilters were invited to come together at Cobden Sewing Machines to sew quilts for charity,” she said.
“We ran eight sessions which were free to attend and included fabric, morning tea, a cup of coffee and friendly chat.”
The aim of the Cobden Connection and Kindness campaign was to spread kindness, encourage gratitude, connect and reconnect people within the community.
The project received grant funding from the South West Community Foundation and Regional Renewal.
Two large community painting were also completed as part of the initiative.
Mrs Smith said she was pleased with the outcome of Social Quilting for Good.
“A huge thank you to all of these wonderful ladies who came along and worked on these quilts,” she said.
“The Cobden Kindness and Connection Campaign also acts as a reminder that there are still many things to be grateful for.”
Mrs Smith said the funding for the program came about due to COVID.
“We have four quilts to donate, with three finished so far,” she said.
“I’ve also made bags to match the quilts.” Mackillop Family Services’ Hayden Mitchell and Loreto Dunn attended a morning tea to present the quilts in Cobden.
Mr Mitchell said Mackillop Family Services appreciated the donation which would be given to local foster children.
“It (the quilt) can be a safety thing for them, it can be a safe place for them,” he said.
“We appreciate any donation, but the work and effort that goes into these is a lot more meaningful.”

Bringing joy in the garden
WHEN it comes to running a successful business and giving back to the community, Craig Walker and Emma Brown are to be commended.
What began as an idea to help locals who enjoy gardening but, for one reason or another, are unable to bend down, is today a thriving business that is giving back to the community.
Sharky’s Raised Garden Beds produces high quality beds that enable even those with limited physical abilities, the chance to enjoy gardening and the great outdoors.
“Our aim is to offer friendly service, great communication and an outstanding product,” Craig said.
“A major part of our business is the gifting of free beds to those who would otherwise be unable to garden.
“We sell to the public and use some of the proceeds from sales to purchase materials and make garden beds to gift to those in need.”
To date, more than 40 garden beds have been donated to grateful recipients including those in wheelchairs, people with MND and others with sight impairments.
Vicki (surname withheld on request) was one such recipient.
“I was so grateful to be gifted a raised garden bed because I love to grow organic food,” she said.
“I have very limited eye sight but thanks to this new garden bed I’m able to walk into my backyard and easily identify and pick edible plants. This has made such a positive impact on my life.”
Katie Lane, who spends most of her time in a wheelchair, was another happy recipient of a gifted garden bed.
“I absolutely love gardening but I spend most of my time in a wheelchair – without these raised beds I wouldn’t be able to get out and dig around and plant veggies and flowers. I’m very grateful for the donation. They are the perfect height for someone in a chair.”
Craig and Emma are strong believers in the therapeutic effects of ‘hands in the dirt’ and raising and caring for flowers and vegetables.
“Research has proven gardening requires the use of several key bodily functions that could ultimately stave off common elderly health issues,” they said.
“Using your body and mind to plant, cultivate, and maintain a garden can keep you physically and mentally fit which is why we are so passionate about donating garden beds to nursing homes, respite homes and individuals living independently at home who
are wheelchair bound or suffering from a mobility or major sight disability.
“Being able to go into your garden and pick fresh, nourishing produce is great for the mind, body and spirit. If we can help people achieve this in a small way, we are accomplishing our agenda at Sharky’s Raised Garden Beds.”
Craig and Emma can be contacted at sharky6571@yahoo. com.au or phone Craig on 0456 293 069 or text Emma on 0439 342 950.

Funding boost for local projects
THE Federal Government will provide an additional $1.567 million to Moyne Shire Council as part of an expanded Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program.
Moyne mayor Karen Foster said the funding was the fourth round of the program, which has helped Moyne complete a range of important community infrastructure upgrades.

AFL honours for Reid
WARRNAMBOOL’S Reid Oval has been named the best new community football facility in Australia by the AFL.
The newly redeveloped Reid Oval was named as the national winner of the AFL Ken Gannon Community Football Facility Awards by the head of AFL Victoria Ben Kavenagh on Tuesday afternoon.
Ken Gannon is a former CEO of the Geelong Football Club and of AFL Victoria, and spent over a decade working to improve community football facilities.
Completed in 2022, the $10.7 million Reid Oval upgrade involved the construction of a new state-ofthe-art pavilion with facilities which cater equally for males and females, new lights bright enough to host night games, a new playing surface and better training facilities.
Warrnambool City Council Mayor Debbie Arnott said to have Reid Oval recognised at a national level was a great honour.
“It’s amazing recognition for the hard work and dedication of so many people over many years, from securing the funding, to developing the project, managing construction and of course, making the most of the state-of-the-art facilities for the betterment of the wider community,” she said.
“As a council, we see the immense value sporting clubs have in creating healthy communities. And part of our role is to do what we can to get as many people as possible involved in sport.
“Two of the major objectives of the redevelopment were to increase female participation and to have a facility capable of hosting regional and national competitions, so it was especially pleasing to be able to combine these two when we hosted our first ever AFL women’s game in October.
“To think about what Reid Oval has hosted just in the past year, from the AFLW game, to junior girls footy under lights, local league grand finals, AFL community camps, it’s just so exciting to know that this is just the beginning.
DO you know a business that has fantastic customer service or is making brilliant products in Moyne Shire?
Why not show them some love and nominate them for the annual ‘Love Local’ awards?
Nominations will close this Sunday for this year’s awards, which recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions of local businesses to the Moyne Shire community.
Mayor Karen Foster said the Love Local program
“We’re a city that loves its sport, and we now have a showcase venue that matches that passion.
“Throughout the project we spoke regularly about Reid Oval being the jewel in Warrnambool’s sporting crown.
-What today’s award recognises is that Reid Oval is also a jewel in the crown of the Australian football community and that’s something that as a city, we should be immensely proud of.”
Head of AFL Victoria Ben Kavenagh congratulated all involved in the project.
“At AFL Victoria we aim to support the provision of well-positioned, welcoming, accessible, fit for purpose
was born out of the COVID pandemic as a way of encouraging people to support local businesses during lockdowns.
“It has grown from that to become a key program for council to promote and celebrate the fantastic things local businesses are doing – and these awards are a key part of that,” she said.
“We have four categories people can nominate their favorite businesses for - Most Innovative Business, Best Customer Service, Most Community Focused, and Made in Moyne.”
football facilities that support our game’s growing strategic priorities,” he said.
“The redeveloped Reid Oval has delivered on all of our facility priorities in spades.”
The AFL formally adopted the creation of the Ken Gannon Community Football Facility Awards to annually recognise best practice in community football facility development across Australia and recognise the people, the clubs and the many other critical stakeholders driving the best projects.
The Reid Oval redevelopment was funded by the Victorian Government, Warrnambool City Council, AFL, Cricket Victoria and local clubs and associations.
According to Cr Foster, the response so far has been “terrific” however more nominations were welcome.
Residents have until midnight this Sunday to lodge their nomination via council’s website.
Cr Foster said nominated businesses would be put to a community vote to determine the winners, which will be announced at an event in June.
Nominations can be made online at https://www. moyne.vic.gov.au/Our-Community/Love-LocalAwards.

Sheepvention set for another year
ALL roads will lead to Hamilton early August when the annual Sheepvention Rural Expo returns for another year.
Following a number of years trialling a three-day format, this year the event will return to two days – Sunday, August 6 and Monday, August 7.
The two-day format will open up to a wider range of exhibitors and competitors.
“Last year’s event was a huge success considering the circumstances we all faced,” newly appointed Sheepvention president David Botterill said.
“As a committee we’ve had to make some changes this year, to ensure the event continuous to be successful.”
After a lot of feedback the committee decided to return to two days, allowing families and school children to come through on Sunday and corporate organisations on Monday.
“We’re also going with a slightly new look in terms of marquees, by combining pavilions,” Mr Botterill said.
The group is keen to continue welcoming children up to 18 years of age free of charge, thanks to support of the Victorian Governments’ Children Entry COVID Recovery Grants Program.
For the past two years, most of the state’s agricultural shows have been significantly impacted by COVID-19 and the grants help organisers return to pre-pandemic attendance and revenue.
“Free entry for kids makes it easier for families to come along and see firsthand best on-farm practices and to immerse themselves in learning experiences to better understand agriculture,” SarahJane McCormack, Agriculture Victoria executive director, policy and programs said.
Following the hesitancy of the
pandemic in 2022, an increased number of exhibitors are expected to trade this year.
The event provides a platform for agribusiness, machinery, equipment, livestock and professional services to come together to showcase their products and services.
Trade exhibitors are now encouraged to apply online, with applications closing on Friday, June 2.
In addition, the renowned ‘inventions competition’ will again highlight some of the most creative ideas from entrepreneurs and inventors.
Keen inventors are now encouraged to put their thinking caps on and start ticking away on the tools to make their great ideas come to life.
Applications for all competitions, including the Hamilton and Western District Sheep Show, Victorian Yard Dog Championships, inventions competition and wool handling competitions are now open.
The societies dedicated volunteer network has declined over the years due to an ageing demographic and limited time availability, and like many other organisations, the committee has found that it has been difficult to engage new volunteers in recent years
Volunteers play a vital role in the event’s successful running each day, assisting in the management of pavilions, competitions and activities throughout.
Moving forward the committee hopes to implement strategies to decrease volunteer hours to make volunteering more attractive for all.
Anyone interested in volunteering is encourage to contact the society.
More information about the event can be found at www.sheepvention.com.

Mortlake agents yarded 1,280 cattle this week with numbers dominated by some 680 cows. The quality overall was good to some plainer types, however, some very good beef cows were yarded with the quality a little plainer than the previous weeks market. Not all the regular buyers operated and restocker interest was also restricted providing a softer and at times very erratic market. Along with the larger cow offering, 200 grown steers and heifers were sold along with 400 trade. Cows were softer by 30c/kg more so for the heavier end. Trade cattle were 10 to 15c/kg cheaper for the top end. Manufacturing cattle remained firm with grown steers and heifers back 10c/kg. Yearling steers and heifers sold from 345c to 386c and grown types topped at 380c/ kg. Manufacturing steers sold to 324c/kg. Good heavy beef cows made between 255c and 292c/kg. Medium cows 210c to 270c with well covered dairy cows realizing 220c to 275c/kg. Grown bulls to 242c and younger cubs to 266c/kg. Market Reporter Chris Agnew.

Orford and District table tennis
THE loss to Warrnambool
Vikings has seen Myndarra drop from third to fifth, while Port Fairy sneaks into the top four of the Orford and District Table Tennis Association.
The clash of the undefeated Attunga and Warrnambool Vikings headlines this week’s matches.
Tarrone has a chance to post its first win and Port Fairy has a chance to make it three in a row.
Week four will see Attunga v Warrnambool Vikings and going off last year’s outcome, the Vikings may continue to cut a path through opponents.
Port Fairy also has a chance to continue its winning streak when it faces Orford.
With Orford’s David Rowbottom still sidelined, the new team on the block certainly looks good.
Glengleeson will play Tarrone but Tarrone, on paper, looks too strong for Glengleeson who are without the services of Peter and Andrea Drendel.
Led by David Warhurst,Tarrone should win enough rubbers to open its account for the year.
Myndarrawill face
Warrnambool Warriors and it is anticipated the Warriors will be singing a happy tune home after their win against the young Myndarra side.
Results from week three were
as follows:
Warrnambool Vikings defeated Myndarra 8.26/3.11.
The scores may have looked one sided but close examination of the scoresheet shows there were games that were very competitive.

Vikings won the first doubles in a five game rubber, 11/4, 5/11, 11/5, 13/15 and 11/7.
All Warrnambool Vikings players won two rubbers.
Orford lost to Attunga 1.7/10.30 This was a percentage boosting win for
Attunga.
Russel Hussey (Orford) won his first rubber with a new bat after 20 years wearing out the old one, while Val and Kelly Wortley both won their three rubbers for Attunga - although both had extended rubbers against Russel, before he got his eye in to defeat Ian in the last singles round.
