The sky’s the limit

FLYING model aircraft takes patience, precision, practice... and more practice.

For members of the Warrnambool Model Aircraft Club, the art of flying is something they continue to work at and is a hobby they enjoy sharing.

Each year the club hosts a ‘Fun Fly’ event from its base in Koroit, and this year’s event will run next weekend, March 16 and 17.

“Our Fun Flight days attract fliers from not only our club but from many interstate as well,” club vice-president Peter Haberfield said.

“The weekend gives fliers the opportunity to show their skills, their craft and to talk with visitors who are always interested in what we do and how the planes are built.

“The weekend also acts as abit of a fundraiser for our club because we ask a gold coin donation. The weekend is fully catered and we’re expecting around 40 to 50 planes over the two days.

“But like most public events, its success also depends on the weather. If the winds are too strong that won’t be favourable.”

Members of the public will be most welcome between 10am and 3pm.

Organisers are hoping that among the large number of model aircraft on display will be one from Adelaide with a wingspan of around 13 foot.

“Now that will be something that will create a lot of interest,” Mr Haberfield said.

“Most of us have models much smaller because, in reality, the bigger the wingspan the more difficult they are to manoeuvre, not just in the sky but

also on land in terms of storage and transport.

“But in saying that, those (planes) on the smaller scale can get lost in the sky which also makes them hard to navigate as well.”

While it can take several months to build a model aircraft from scratch, learning to fly can take even longer.

“It’s not as easy as some people may think,” Mr Haberfield said.

“We’re always learning and most of

us have had a crash (or several) in the process. It takes time, practice, patience and more patience but it’s a lot of fun and something we all enjoy.”

Women in the spotlight

MOYNE Shire Council will today celebrate the incredible women who make our community special.

With an overwhelming response, council received over 50 nominations for the 2024 Inspiring Women of Moyne awards.

The awards aim to recognise and celebrate women in Moyne who contribute meaningfully to our community - whether through their work, studies, families, relationships, or community involvement.

The awards will be presented at a free breakfast event at Glyph Gallery in Port Fairy this morning, Friday March 8 –International Women’s Day.

The event was hosted by deputy mayor Cr Karen Foster and featured guest speaker Kirsten Diprose.

Mayor Cr Ian Smith and Cr Karen Foster have selected the winners from an extensive list of nominees.

Cr Foster said it was important for women in the Moyne community to be acknowledged for their valuable contributions.

“Each of the women nominated are

examples of the strong, capable and generous women amongst us,” Cr Foster said.

“These women have been nominated because they make a difference in the world around them, inspiring others.

“These awards are a passion of mine and provide a wonderful opportunity to celebrate women making positive impacts in the community while continuing the push for greater gender equality.”

The award recipients will be featured in next week’s edition of the Warrnambool Weekly

Classic cars head to Cannon Hill

MORE than 120 classic cars will converge on Flagstaff Hill on Wednesday, March 20 as part of a four-day rally.

The first car in the Targa Classica rally is expected to arrive at Flagstaff Hill at 7am.

Among the cars to be featured will be Bugatti, Porsche, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, alongside Australian classics including the Holden Sandman, Torana and a range of Fords.

For car lovers this will be a feast and anyone heading to Flagstaff Hill between 7am and 9am to check out the cars will also be able to buy a bacon and egg roll and a coffee.

“We’re thrilled to have Warrnambool included on the itinerary and Flagstaff Hill provides a great stop for motorists and an opportunity for motoring enthusiasts to check out some rare cars that have been beautifully maintained or restored,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said.

“At the community breakfast people can chat with the drivers, check out what’s under the hood and witness the spectacle as the cars depart.”

Targa Classica organiser Andrew Lawson said the rally would cover more than 1,100km and showcase the Goldfields, Grampians, Great Ocean Road and the

Macedon Ranges.

“We wanted to create an event that celebrated cars, the event’s Italian roots, and also Victoria’s regional centres,” Mr Lawson said.

“With direct links to Italian heritage through the event, we feel it’s important to show off the highlights of our amazing state, in keeping with the tradition and foundations of the event’s Italian connection.”

Mr Lawson, who founded Targa Classica, was inspired by his own experience of competing in Australia as well as in Italy at the Targa Florio in Sicily and the Mille Miglia.

The Targa Classica (the only event like it in the Southern Hemisphere) takes its inspiration from the iconic classic car events of Italy - a much-loved tradition since 1906.

Today, the Coppa Delle Alpi, Coppa Milano Sanremo, Mille Miglia, Nuvolari, and Targa Florio are considered the pinnacle for classic car enthusiasts.

Mr Lawson said the event was expected to inject more than $1 million into regional economies, with more than 1,500 hotel beds filled and 4,500 meals served.

Visitors will travel to the event from interstate and it is anticipated that this year’s event will generate more than $1.5 million of activity spread across six Victorian regions.

Stage two works underway

MOYNE mayor Cr Ian Smith has laid the first bluestone paver on the stage two township renewal works in Koroit.

The pavers signified yet another step forward for the project.

“It’s great to see this project taking shape, it’s been a longheld wish of council and the Koroit community to give the main business area a refresh and now we are delivering,” Cr Smith said.

“Starting work on the paving is a major milestone and over the next few weeks residents will see the new footpath take shape.”

Starting at the Woolsthorpe Road intersection, contractors will work their way back towards IGA where the pavement will meet the existing bluestone pavement.

Cr Smith said access to businesses would be maintained at all times, but there would be some disruption.

“We will have to move pedestrians around work sites, so there will be some diversions and footpath closures in place,” he said.

“Businesses will be fully accessible, with paving works in front of entrances to be completed outside trading hours.”

Council’s project management office team is in regular contact with traders to ensure they stay informed and that any issues are addressed.

“I’d encourage everyone to continue to shop locally and to enter the weekly raffle which is still running,” Cr Smith said.

“All you have to do is spend $15 in one transaction at a Koroit business, write your details on the back of your receipt and put it in the barrel at Daly’s IGA or the Koroit library.”

Each week one lucky winner will receive a $100 voucher to the Koroit business of their choice.

The raffle will run for the duration of the stage two works.

Once paving work is complete, new street furniture will be installed and street trees planted.

Stage two works were funded with a $1 million allocation from council’s budget.

The major works are on track to be completed ahead of the Koroit Irish Festival late next month.

Council has also lodged an application to the federal government’s Growing Region’s Fund for $2 million in matched funding to complete the remaining footpaths in Commercial Road and for works in High Street. An announcement on that application is expected soon.

Your chance to support Cancer Council

WITH the 2024 ‘Shitbox Rally’ fast approaching, two local entrants are calling on the community to help them raise their $15,000 target for the Cancer Council.

Warrnambool mates Stan McCullagh and Greg Bos will drive their 2007 Toyota Camry from Adelaide to Perth next month across some of the toughest roads in the land.

They will join an anticipated “cast of hundreds” for the rally, which raises much-needed funds for Cancer Council.

To date they have raised around $13,000 but are hoping the community will support their last raffle to get them to their target.

“We’re currently selling raffle tickets in Koroit Street each Saturday morning and they are also available at the George Taylor’s stores,” Stan said.

“We have been extremely well supported by some very generous local businesses who have not only bought tickets but provided some wonderful raffle prizes, for which we’re very grateful.

“The raffle will be drawn on Saturday, March 23 so we’re hoping we can sell quite a few more tickets before then.”

The Shitbox Rally is not a race. It’s a challenge to drive cars

worth no more than $1,500 and this year it will start in Adelaide. Participants will take three days to travel the Oodnadatta Track to Uluru, past Kata Tjuta and towards the Gibson Desert

for the journey down the Great Central Road to the southwest and their final destination, Perth.

The route has several unsealed roads and includes a stretch of

over 1,000 kilometres where participants won’t have access to fuel.

“Hopefully our car holds together long enough to get us to the end,” Greg said.

“We’re looking forward to meeting some amazing people, going past some equally amazing landmarks, all the while raising important funds for Cancer Council.”

Council seeks airport funding

WARRNAMBOOL City council is seeking investment from the Victorian Government to secure the longterm prosperity of the Warrnambool airport.

While work is currently underway to strengthen a section of pavement at the airport, council is calling on the government to support not only the Warrnambool facility, but others like it across regional Victoria.

At its March meeting, council voted unanimously to submit a motion to the upcoming Municipal Association of Victoria meeting that calls on the state government to establish a funding program for improving infrastructure at airports in regional Victoria.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said he hoped to partner with higher levels of government to ensure the airport continued to provide a service to a wide variety of stakeholders.

“Right now, we’re strengthening about 2800 square metres of the apron to help it better handle the size of modern aircraft, and that work is being funded by council,” Cr Blain said.

“When you have big aircraft like the Ambulance Victoria helicopter or some of the larger chartered planes, this new apron will be able to manage their weight a lot better.

“While we would love to see a passenger service return, and it really is an important service for a city like Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Airport still provides a vital service, and a really diverse one at that.

“The Ambulance Victoria helicopter averages an urgent flight every day, with Ambulance Victoria and the Royal Flying Doctor Service using fixed wing flights twice a day on average.

“The airport is also an important base in the event of an emergency. Fire-bombing aircraft can be filled with water in three minutes, and extensive water supplies can also be made available for firefighting tankers.

“As well as emergency services, the airport is used by other agencies such as the Victorian Government to monitor whales, plus a wide range of businesses, chartered flights and training providers.

“Regional airports are crucial pieces of infrastructure for the entire state, and that’s why we have decided to submit

this motion that would call for the Victorian Government to set money aside each year to improve them.”

Cr Blain said while the airport is a council asset, the benefits are enjoyed by a wide range of groups.

“We want to work with the Victorian Government to maximise these benefits as much as possible,” Cr Blain said.

Work on the airport apron is expected to be completed in April.

Great results at beach clean-up

WARRNAMBOOL’S Thunder Point now looks much cleaner thanks to a huge effort by a group of 30 volunteers last weekend.

As part of this year’s Clean Up Australia Day event, the volunteers collected an impressive 76.5 kilograms of litter on Sunday afternoon.

The day was organised by Beach Patrol’s Genevieve Bale, Colleen Hughson and Mandy Shute, alongside Jill Bourke from West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House and Chris Hose from Aurora Surf.

“We were thrilled with the number of volunteers who lent their time and effort to the cause,” group leader with Beach Patrol Colleen Hughson said.

Among the haul were 26 bags of rubbish, containing a whopping 7,268 items of litter.

The majority of items collected were lightweight softplastic food wrappers and takeaway packaging.

Notably, volunteers encountered a significant number of cigarette butts, totalling 1200, scattered around the carpark, indicating a pressing need for increased awareness about responsible disposal practices.

However, it wasn’t all trash and debris - amidst the clean-up, volunteers stumbled upon intriguing relics from the past, including vintage beer bottles dating back to the 1930s, marked with the distinctive ‘M.B.C.V’ insignia, and a rare Reeves soft drink stubbie.

Strange finds also included a crucifix that had been wrapped up in a black garbage bag and a cane baby bassinet.

These unexpected finds added an extra layer of excitement to the day’s activities, sparking curiosity among participants of all ages.

Families turned out in force for the event, with children eagerly embracing the opportunity to wield ‘litter pickers’ and contribute to the clean-up effort.

The sense of community spirit was palpable as volunteers worked together to restore Thunder Point to its natural beauty.

“Amidst the celebration of community spirit, there was also sobering reminders of ongoing challenges,” Ms Hughson said.

“Alcohol bottles remained a significant issue, with 122 glass bottles, 42 plastic drink bottles, and 131 cans predominantly of alcoholic origin were collected.

“And the prevalence of litter in the bushes underscored the need for continued efforts to combat irresponsible disposal practices, exacerbated by the apparent misuse of the area as an impromptu restroom.”

Reflecting on the day’s events, Beach Patrol leader Genevieve Bale suggested it may be worth putting up signs stating where the nearest toilets are located.

“The signs may deter this quite disgusting and unhygienic practice of just going anywhere,” Ms Bale said.

“Overall, the Clean Up Australia Day event at Thunder Point Coastal Reserve served as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the enduring commitment to environmental stewardship.

“As we look towards the future, let us continue to work together to preserve and protect our precious natural spaces for generations to come.”

Restoration rally to draw a crowd

EVERYTHING vintage

will be on show when the South Western District Restoration Group opens its gates for the annual group rally over two jampacked days.

The annual group rally will be held tomorrow, Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 with thousands of people expected to flock to the Grayland Street location from across the country as a variety of historical artefacts and displays go on show.

The 48th annual rally is shaping up to be a busy one, according to group vice president Brian O’Shannessy.

“We’re looking forward to it; it should be good,” he said.

“Hopefully the weather is kind to us.

“In the last few years, the rally has been growing in both engines ad exhibitors and attendance.”

Displays over the weekend will include shed displays which feature a variety of paraphernalia, steam engines of all sizes and model boats.

Mr O’Shannessy encouraged attendees to have a look at a new feature at this year’s rally, with a horseworks on display.

A horse walking in a circle attached to the horseworks

would power stationary farm machinery.

“We’ve got it set up and people will be able to push it,” Mr O’Shannessy said.

Various pieces of history will be up for sale at the annual action including a Sunshine five horse power engine on its original transporter.

The auction always proves popular and starts at 11am on the Saturday.

The vintage tractor pull will be on again to the delight of tractor pull enthusiasts.

There will also be a display of model boats as well as displays from the Warrnambool Model Train Group and the Warrnambool Model Aircraft Club.

A feature of the weekend is a special exhibition from the International Harvester Club of Australia.

Youngsters will be well catered for throughout the weekend with a host of vintage themed children’s games to play including a bowling alley and quoits.

The South Western District Restoration Group began in 1978 at the original Bookaar site, before moving to Cobden in 2011 where the group has continued to flourish.

“We’re trying every year to

have something new,” Mr O’Shannessy said.

“If anyone is interested in having a shed, display or joining the club talk to any shed member on the weekend.

“We get a lot of exhibitors from other clubs around Victoria.”

The weekend is fully catered and camping is available. Entry fee for each day is $15 for an adult and 16 years and under are admitted free. All money raised on the day goes to the South Western District Restoration Group.

Gates are open 10am to 4pm both Saturday and Sunday.

The South Western District Restoration Group is located at 75 Grayland Street, Cobden. For auction information contact Brian O’Shannessy on 0408 529 408.

‘Townie’ helps new genetics generation

AFTER growing up as a selfconfessed “townie”, Penny Welch has embraced the genetics industry and been rewarded for encouraging a new generation.

The genetics material export officer at Total Livestock Genetics has been honoured with a National Herd Improvement Association of Australia (NHIA) Young Achiever Award.

Penny, a former Warrnambool student, is the third female staff member from TLG to receive the award in the past four years, following in the footsteps of Emma Hallyburton and Helena Carter.

Penny’s dedication to supporting young talents and advocating for the herd improvement industry earned her the prestigious acknowledgment.

She was nominated by TLG’s operations manager Ruth Barber, who said Penny’s infectious passion for agriculture and her encouragement for the next generation was outstanding.

It’s a far cry from her teenage years when she was one of only a few girls in a class of 30 studying agriculture at school.

“I’m a townie by birth,” Penny said. “I met a dairy farmer looking for a relief milker at an Emmanuel College open day. I had no previous connections. I started milking cows as a teenager and TLG came to the farm and flushed cows when I was about 17 and I thought it seemed pretty cool.”

She started working in the live export industry and moved into semen collection before exporting semen.

“I really enjoy the science behind it and what we can do to get bloodlines overseas to countries where they have never been,” she said.

Now aged 33 and living in Terang, Penny’s role involves working with colleagues to export product from TLG and private clients all around the world.

Penny was on the committee for the Western District Youth Camp which was revived in January 2024 after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re trying to get the next generation excited about the industry,” she said.

“There were a number of students who had never worked with dairy cattle before and it was good to give them a calf to raise for a couple of days.”

Penny also works with the Neil Porter Legacy.

“I’m always trying to showcase what the industry has to offer,” she said.

“When I started studying agriculture at Emmanuel College, I was one of three or four girls in a class of 30. When we ran the camp, it was mostly women. There has been a massive swing in the past 20 years.”

Penny is also a former winner of the Power of Women in Dairying scholarship.

This allowed her to travel to World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin, and she continues to work with the power of women to promote their contribution to the industry.

As part of her award, Penny has received funding for career development from NHIA has invested in the Marcus Oldham Rural Leadership Program.

“I want to gain more experience to go

the extra step in the industry and in the company if I can,” she said.

Penny said she was humbled by the award.

“It means a lot. It’s recognition from peers who I’ve looked up to my whole

life which is incredible.”

NHIA also presented its inaugural award for outstanding contribution to industry to Christian Hickey, who has now retired from National Herd Development Co-op.

Keert to lead new tech school

PLANS for the new Warrnambool Tech School continue to take shape, with a director to lead the school announced this week.

After more than a decade as Cobden Technical School’s principal, Rohan Keert has announced he would be taking on the role.

He said he would take up the new position from mid Term 2.

As part of the new role, Mr Keert will be tasked with establishing and leading a new Tech School in Warrnambool.

He said it would be a hi-tech STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) centre of excellence.

“Warrnambool Tech School will be housed within the South West TAFE campus site and engage secondary students from government and non-government schools across the three local government areas of Corangamite, Moyne and Warrnambool in single or multi-day programs linked to the curriculum at their home school,” Mr Keert said.

“All programs and bus transport will be provided entirely free of charge for schools and students.

“The new centre will connect schools and industry in contemporary learning programs

that challenge students to solve problems in a real-world context – bridging the gap between emerging industries and future innovators.”

He said the Warrnambool Tech School would be designed to “elicit an immediate positive reaction from students and visitors”.

“Learning spaces will be designed to support the learning programs on offer, providing a variety of spaces for different activities, including the regular use of hi-tech equipment chosen to support the learning programs including 3D printing, robotics, coding and other emerging trends,” Mr Keert said.

“It is anticipated that the Warrnambool Tech School will be opened and operating by Term 3, 2026.”

Mr Keert said there had been a number of highlights over the past 10 years which made him proud to belong to the Cobden Tech community.

“These include the establishment of the Corangamite Trade Training Cluster, the 50th Anniversary celebrations, and the way our school adapted to the relocation to Camperdown College during the St Patrick’s Day fires,” he said.

“However, it is the small, everyday interactions with students that I will miss the most.”

New clubhouse now open

GOLF enthusiasts from far and wide can now enjoy a new multimillion dollar facility in the heart of Warrnambool.

The Warrnambool Golf Club recently opened its modern clubhouse and its members couldn’t be prouder.

“This new facility is just wonderful and it is testament to the work put in by all our members in their endeavours to raise a considerable amount of money towards its build,” general manager Ashlee Scott said.

Originally anticipated to cost around $5.5 million, estimates have now put the project at closer to $7.5 million.

“We had a strategic plan back in 2019 to develop a concept and feasibility study for a new clubhouse,” Ms Scott said.

“We had a design concept early the following year and in February 2021 I submitted a funding request to the federal government for a $2 million grant. Eight months later I was told it was successful.”

The former clubhouse was demolished in June 2022 and work began on the new build in October that year.

“Along with the government funds, our club invested $3.5 million and we’ve been busy fundraising to offset our loan facility,” Ms Scott said.

“We have just over 1,000 members and they are all extremely proud of this new clubhouse.”

While the golf club caters, primarily, for lovers of the sport, it is very much a “community facility to be enjoyed by all.”

“We want everyone to come here and enjoy this beautiful space; it’s a place where people can meet, educate, socialise and network.

“This is a hub for the entire community – where community groups who may not have their own bricks and mortar can gather and utilise our meeting room downstairs.”

Since the building’s construction, the club has gone from strength to strength. Where it currently employed one fulltime staff member and two casuals, it now has the equivalent of five full-time staff.

“Over the past few weeks we’ve had great feedback not only from golfers but also non-golfers who have come to meet with friends, have a drink and a snack and just take in this wonderful view overlooking the course.

“Our course is rated in the top 50 in Australia and that’s something we’re very proud of. Alongside Port Fairy, we now have two premier courses in the district which is perfect.”

The clubhouse doesn’t have pokies but what it does offer is a welcoming, friendly atmosphere to golfers and nongolfers alike.

“The original clubhouse also included a caretakers’ residence on-site. This is our third and we are confident this will now take us well into the future.”

Wind farm zone concerns council

WARRNAMBOOL City and Moyne Shire councils have expressed concern over a decision to declare a wind farm zone off the coast of Warrnambool and Port Fairy.

The Australian and Victorian governments have declared a 1000 square kilometre wind energy zone, 15-20 kilometres off the coast, that will pave the way for the construction of off-shore wind turbines.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain and Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said there were too many unresolved questions in relation to the potential impact of the decision on the Warrnambool and Moyne municipalities.

“It’s early days and we’re still reviewing the decision,” Cr Blain said.

“But we have some serious concerns about the impact of the decision.

“Will the turbines be visible from the coast while you’re enjoying a walk along the Promenade or a swim in Lady Bay?

“While we understand the value of the

renewable energy and the employment that will flow from this declaration, we are looking for further explanation as to why the original 5000sqkm zone has contracted to a 1000sqkm zone off the coast of Warrnambool and Port Fairy.”

Cr Smith said he was pleased to see the large number of jobs projected to stem from the project but there was little at this stage to indicate the employment opportunities that would emerge for Warrnambool and Moyne.

“At this stage it appears most of these positions will be based in Portland,” Cr Smith said.

“Given that Portland has the industrial scale port, the smelter and major power transmission infrastructure, we’re keen to understand why the declared zone did not extend further west.

“We also want more details on how the cables and infrastructure will come ashore and how that looks for our beaches and marine environments.”

Cr Blain said the two councils were also

looking forward to reading a summary of the community consultation findings along with how the impact on marine life will be managed.

They also needed to know whether there would be an adverse impact on the tourism industry.

“There will also be seismic testing and we need to know how significant this would be,” Cr Blain said.

“We’re also keen to have a commitment from the Australian Government about placing any associated power lines underground.

“It’s a delicate issue. We’re in favour of renewable energy and we’re also conscious of not wanting to default to a NIMBY attitude.

“But we do have a number of genuine concerns and questions that remain unanswered and we’ll engage with the Australian and Victorian governments to get the answers our community needs in relation to a decision that has some perplexing elements.”

Incentives to build in small towns

MOYNE Shire Council is offering cash incentives for people to build or relocate a home to the shire’s smaller towns.

The Small Town Incentive Grant will provide 10 eligible applicants up to $2,000 when they build or relocate a home to a town in the shire with a population less than 500 people (using suitably zoned land).

Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the grant could be used to help people establish their new homes.

“It might be things like getting plans drawn, installing wastewater systems, establishment of driveways and fencing or installation of solar panels,” Cr Smith said.

“The aim of this grant is to help unlock existing vacant lots in our smaller townships and encourage growth in those communities.”

Cr Smith said new builds or relocations in towns such as Garvoc, Woolsthorpe and Panmure would be eligible.

“There’s an eligibility criteria that includes ensuring

the proposed build is within the township boundary and already appropriately zoned along with a few other key areas,” he said.

“This is a great way to help encourage people to look at our smaller towns, where land is affordable and in good supply, there are good access to services and a strong sense of community.”

Eligibility information and details on how to apply will be available soon, with grants open until the funding is exhausted.

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT

YARDING 2607 CHANGE 1201 more

With no livestock market next week and diminishing dry feed available numbers jumped to 2,600 head at Mortlake this week.

For the top end quality cattle, over most categories it was a good result, however there was a large number of cattle starting to show the effects of the dry conditions in most areas of the market and none more so than the trade types.

The trade cattle and bullocks carried good weight along with the lead of the cow offering with both beef and dairy types also showing effects of the conditions.

The market comprised 823 grown cattle, 924 cows along with 815 trade and 45 grown bulls. Not all the regular buyers attended and those present were not fully engaged in a market softer over most categories.

Bullocks lost 10 to 25c/kg with manufacturing steers back by 50c/kg. The better vealers were cheaper by 30 to 40c/kg and trade steers and heifers were back by up to 40c/kg in places. The better covered cows generally remained firm with the medium weights losing 10c and the very light cows softer by 50 to 70c/kg. All secondary types were softer by 50 to 70c/kg with limited competition. Bulls gained 15c/kg.

Vealers made from 272 to 340c/kg with trade steers and heifers making between 245 and 328c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 328c whilst manufacturing steers sold to 210c/kg. heavy beef cows made from 220 to 245c/kg with the medium weights between 165 and 190c/kg.

Dairy cows with cover were making generally between 170 and 232c/kg with grown beef bulls selling to 234c/kg. Market Reporter Chris Agnew.

Club celebrates 80 years

NESTLES Cricket Club recently celebrated its 80th anniversary.

A packed house gathered at the club’s social rooms at Reid Oval to enjoy a special evening of reminiscing.

Along with the re-naming of the rooms to the Ian Lefty Wright Social Rooms, another highlight of

the evening was the awarding of a life membership to Geoff Anderson.

Geoff was a worthy recipient of the award having played in five premierships for the club (captaining one of the teams) and contributing both on and off the field.

During his 130 A grade matches, Geoff has taken

48 wickets and made just over 4,000 runs.

The club has enjoyed 80 successive years of cricket since its first game against the Woollen Mill on October 21, 1944.

It currently fields four senior men’s teams, a senior women’s team, seven junior sides and a Woolworths Blasters program.

Special honour for 'Lefty'

IAN ‘Lefty’ Wright will forever hold a special place in the history books at Nestles Cricket Club.

While Lefty’s playing stats are well known across the district, it’s his behind-the-scenes efforts spanning many years that has earned him a special honour with the club.

During Nestles’ recent 80th anniversary celebrations at Reid Oval, the club’s social rooms were aptly renamed the Ian Lefty Wright Social Rooms.

And it’s not difficult to see why such an honour was bestowed on a gentleman who has contributed so much to the sport, not only at club level but also at association level and beyond. A life member and prominent ‘legend’ of the Warrnambool District Cricket Association (where he was an executive member for 12 years and president for five), Ian was also a member of

the combined association/Corangamite Cricket Zone board for 10 years.

Ian was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000, presented to him by Bob Merriman on behalf of the federal government.

The following year, as chairman of the Australian Country Cricket Championships executive, he played an integral role in getting sponsorships and enlisting the support of the local community to ensure the event was successfully held in Warrnambool.

Locally, Ian has been involved with Nestles Cricket Club for almost 60 years. He played his first year of senior cricket as a 14 year-old and retired at the age of 44 after 29 seasons on the pitch with Nestles.

During that time his accomplishments are large and many.

He has coached countless junior cricketers, has been an active committee

member and was captain of the club’s A grade side for 10 years – during which time he won three league ‘Cricketer of the Year’ awards along with the league’s Umpires Award in 1959/60.

He has also celebrated 15 A grade premierships (including five as captain), 16 centuries, two 10-wicket matches (including one in a grand final) and has best bowling figures of 8/21.

After 342 A grade games (which included 371 innings), Ian is ranked the club’s number one player for matches played, wickets taken and runs scored.

The Ian Wright Trophy is now awarded to the division one champion trophy winner each season in recognition of his contribution to the sport.

Ian’s sporting abilities also stemmed to football where he enjoyed a great career with Warrnambool Football Club in the Hampden League.

Close final for Gators

ALLANSFORD Panmure’s under 17 cricketers fell just a few runs short of a grand final victory last weekend.

The young Gators, who finished the home and away season undefeated on top of the Warrnambool District League ladder, earned their spot in the grand final after a semi-final win over West Warrnambool the previous week.

The Gators faced Mortlake Cobden at Warrnambool’s Reid Oval last Sunday morning and put on a great display of skill with both bat and ball.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first, the Gators’

openers Archie Poumako (3) and Jake Carman (4) were both caught by Mortlake Cobden’s Campbell Walsh off the bowling of Ryan Mottram.

Vice-captain Matthew Gome settled and made a wellearned 44 runs from 70 deliveries in a spell that included three boundaries.

He was well-supported on the scoreboard by teammaters Connor Brisbane (45) and Sam Willsher (21).

Also contributing to the run tally were Morgan Cook (7), Logan Kermond (5 not out) and David Boyd (3 not out).

At the end of their 45 overs the Gators were 7/142.

In reply, Mortlake Cobden got off to a relative slow start with the bat, with opener Taj Podger run out on seven

and fellow opener Campbell Walsh caught on 12. Cobden’s Edmund Walsh steadied with a handy 24 runs, Edmund Walsh made 24 and Parker Walsh made 29 while team captain Oscar Ritchie contributed 17. Mortlake’s Josh Slater proved instrumental on the scoreboard, making a quick unbeaten 30 from 26 balls in an innings that included three boundaries.

Cobden Mortlake finished the day on 6/145 in the 44th over to claim the premiership.

Best of the bowlers for the Gators were Mack Mills who took 2/24 from eight overs, Izsak Dean 1/23 from eight, Jake Carman 1/25 from nine and Connor Brisbane 1/30 from nine.

Hampden appoints netball coaches

HAMPDEN Football Netball League has announced its Association Championship netball coaches for 2024.

The league will compete in the Western Zone Association Championship qualifiers in Ballarat on June 2, before moving onto the state titles on June 16.

The Open division team will be coached by South Warrnambool premiership coach Will Jamison.

Will has guided Hampden’s Open team

for the past two seasons, resulting in semi-final placings.

New Koroit Open coach Danielle McInerney will lead the under 17 squad.

Danielle, who returns from Townsville this season, has been involved in four previous HFNL Association Championship campaigns during 2017 – 2020.

The under 15 squad will have joint coaches, with experienced mentors Leah Kermeen and Josie Ellerton at the helm.

The duo has a combined 500 games of

Hampden League experience and were the under 15 and under 15 reserves coaches at South Warrnambool in 2023.

Koroit legend Kate Dobson has been appointed the under 13 coach and will be assisted by Lianna Harrison.

Kate has been involved with senior and junior coaching for the past 20 years at multiple levels and this season is the under 13 Saints coach.

Lianna, a newcomer to the league, has had previous coaching experience in south-east Melbourne and north

central Victoria.

Hampden head of netball Dot Jenkins said the league was absolutely thrilled with the appointments.

“Our coaches are extremely good communicators who focus on the strengths of the players and the teams they coach,” Ms Jenkins said.

“The league’s first aim is to expose the girls to the next level of netball.

“Players coming together to represent the league allows the development of friendships, camaraderie and respect for each other and opposing teams.”

Logans to host state titles

THE action will heat up at Warrnambool’s Logans Beach later this month, with the staging of round two of the bodyboarding state titles.

Bodyboarding Victoria committee member Adam Williams said the group was thrilled to host round two of the titles in Warrnambool over the weekend of March 23-24.

The group is hoping to see some of the sport’s leading competitors take to the water at Logan’s Beach.

“The sport of bodyboarding really is growing at a rapid rate and with so many wonderful beaches right here (in Warrnambool) at our doorstep it’s no surprise really,” Williams said.

“I’ve been bodyboarding for about 35 years; I was previously in Newcastle but moved here a few years ago and joined Bodyboarding Victoria.

“There’s now a big appetite for bodyboarding across the nation which is fantastic for the future of the sport but when I look around at the various divisions (juniors, women’s, men’s, masters and grandmasters) there is an apparent lack of youngsters.

“There’s not many below the age of about 35 so that’s something we need to work on.

“It’s a sport that anyone can enjoy, whether for social reasons or for competition. If you can paddle and swim, you can get out and try to catch a wave.”

According to Williams, the more competent swimmers seem to catch a wave relatively quickly and then progress to learning to ‘trim’ and perform other tricks which can earn points in competition.

“What could be better than getting out on a beautiful day and into the surf?

“Having the state titles here in Warrnambool gives everyone the opportunity to come down to the beach and see what bodyboarding is all about – and we hope to see a big crowd here to watch competitors in action and cheer on their favourites.”

The second round of the titles will also allow selection of the Victorian team that will head to Port Macquarie for this year’s nationals (which will form part of the 2024 Festival of Surfing).

“Last year we had about 60 entries so we’re hoping to replicate that,” Williams said.

“We’re also hoping the conditions will be good and we’ll see some decent waves.”
