Students develop no vape, all game campaign WARRNAMBOOL teenagers have developed a new anti-vaping campaign that swaps scare tactics for a simple message - vaping can stop you enjoying the things you love right now. The campaign was created by Emmanuel College students Eve McGrath, Sophie Ryan, Emily Porter, Liddell Cooper and Rushleigh Jeffries as part of their Fit4Life class. Rushleigh said that rather than trying to scare young people with long-term consequences, the aim was to show how vaping can impact life in the short term. “We have two slogans - out of breath out of game, and no vape, all game,” she said. “A lot of teenagers that we know play sports. Having it connect to that we thought would really resonate with them because that’s their social outlet, that’s how they connect with peers. “If they can see how vaping can impact their performance, they might not do it. “It’s not just people who play sport, for you, ‘all game’ could be anything in life.” Fit4Life students worked in teams to draft an anti-vaping campaign, with the winning team going on to further develop it with assistance from One Day Studios. The finished result is a 30 second video that will be shown at the cinema and on social media, as well as posters to be displayed in schools and in public areas frequented by young people. “It was so fun to make it and then to really see what we created come to life,” Rushleigh said. “Making it more real, with acting and proper cameras, it was really cool and it’s spreading a great message.” One Day Studios founding producer Gareth Colliton said the students had a well thought out campaign. “The winning team had written something that was really strong, so it made it quite easy

to turn that into a professional production,” he said. “It’s all about the writing and they’d written a really good 30-second ad, so they were a pleasure to work with.” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain congratulated the students on their hard work to improve the health of their peers. “This is a powerful campaign because it speaks directly to young people in a language they understand, and it’s been created by

young people themselves,” he said. “It’s really encouraging to see these students thinking not just about their own health, but about the wellbeing of their friends and teammates. “They’re setting a great example for our whole community.” Funded by VicHealth, the co-design project is part of the Barwon South West Vaping Prevention Coalition’s efforts to tackle vaping among young people in our region.

The coalition is a partnership with the Barwon South West Public Health Unit and Barwon Adolescent Taskforce as well as local councils, health services and community organisations in the Greater Geelong, Colac Otway, Surf Coast, Corangamite, Warrnambool and Glenelg local government areas. Volunteers call for urgent reform MEMBERS of the CFA Volunteers Group (CFAVG) are calling for urgent structural reform on how these services are funded, equipped and supported. The call comes on the back of the recent devasting fires across Victoria, and following repeated warnings that the state was not bushfire ready. Secretary/treasurer of the CFAVG, Leigh Harry, said the recent fires – which destroyed homes, livestock and bushland, have once again exposed long-standing shortcomings in preparedness, particularly in regional and rural Victoria, where volunteer brigades form the backbone of the emergency response. “Despite government claims of increased funding, the reality on the ground remains unchanged for many brigades,” Mr Harry said. “Volunteers continue to respond using ageing appliances, under-resourced stations and outdated equipment, often in increasingly dangerous conditions.” Mr Harry said many brigades still operate 30 year-old tankers, facilities often failed to meet the needs of female volunteers and that volunteers continue to face fatigue, retention pressure and increasing fire intensity. “CFA volunteers acknowledge climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme fire weather, but this makes preparedness more critical, not less,” he said. “Rising risks demands better fuel management, modern appliances, fit-forpurpose stations and sustainable support for volunteers.”

The CFA Volunteers Group stood on the steps of parliament earlier this month and warned that the lack of long-term support for volunteer brigades was putting communities and ﬁreﬁghters at risk. Mr Harry said volunteers were not asking for praise they simply wanted action. “We need long-term, guaranteed funding for volunteer brigades, modern appliances and upgraded stations, facilities to support all members, proper fuel management and

preparedness planning. “We also need full exemption for all volunteers from the ESVF tax. The bottom line is CFA volunteers will always turn up for their communities but goodwill and sacrifice are not a fire strategy.”

Mr Harry believes if Victoria was serious about bushfire safety, the government must “move beyond headlines and deliver real, long-term preparedness and support for the volunteers who form the backbone of the emergency response.”

Councils disappointed with wind farm approval MOYNE Shire mayor Jordan Lockett has expressed his disappointment with last month’s decision by the Victorian Planning Minister to grant a permit for the proposed Swansons Lane wind farm. After previously objecting to the applications, the mayors of both Moyne and neighbouring Corangamite shires (Cr Kate Makin) have spoken out against the decision. Cr Lockett said the lack of engagement meant there was little detail about any community and economic benefits from the wind farm. “The people and farmers who will be most impacted by these turbines have heard very little about what lasting benefits will come to their local community,” Cr Lockett said. “What we did hear were objections to this project from the community; over 100 submissions were lodged with the Department of Transport and Planning against the application. “We maintain that having a wind farm less than five kilometres from the Garvoc township

is simply too close, it is not the right location, especially being prime agricultural land.” Both mayors also cited concerns over the impact on the local road network, and potential for negative outcomes for neighbouring farming operations. The Victorian Planning Minister announced on December 29 last year that a permit had been granted to the wind farm proponent RE Future. Corangamite Shire mayor, Cr Kate Makin, claimed the developer had made “virtually no effort” to engage with all affected landowners throughout the application process, “showing little respect for our community.” “We can’t understand how this project was approved when it sits well outside the state government’s own proposed Renewable Energy Zones, and fails to meet so many of the proposed guidelines in the draft Victorian Transmission Plan,” she said. The same developer has also lodged an application for the Mumblin Wind Farm (west of Cobden) which is further away from the proposed REZ than Swansons Lane wind farm.

Town rallies for giving tree appeal WARRNAMBOOL has once again proven the power of community, with more than $100,000 set to support locals on the back of last month’s Meli Giving Tree Appeal. Busy New Year’s for paramedics AMBULANCE Victoria paramedics have worked through one of the busiest New Year’s Eve periods in recent years, responding to a sharp increase in emergency demand across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

In metropolitan Melbourne, caseload between midnight and 2am was 150 per cent higher than previous years, with Geelong and the Barwon region recording a 300 per cent higher caseload in the hours after midnight. In the Melbourne CBD and surrounds, paramedics were dispatched to more than 80 emergency cases with 62 patients treated

and 33 transported to hospital. Ambulance Victoria was well resourced across the night, with additional paramedics rostered on across metropolitan Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and key regional centres to support planned New Year’s Eve events and manage increased demand. Ambulance Victoria chief executive officer Jordan Emery said paramedics responded to a wide range of serious and complex incidents overnight. “Our paramedics treated a number of high acuity cases, including stabbings, serious assaults and fireworks related injuries, alongside the usual mix of medical emergencies, alcohol related illness, trips and falls,” Mr Emery said.

“This was a much busier night than previous years, and our teams worked exceptionally hard under sustained pressure to ensure patients received timely and appropriate care.” Several serious incidents required urgent ambulance response across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, and a number of fireworks related injuries that resulted in significant trauma. Mr Emery also praised the role of event first aid providers, who treated more than 120 patients in the Melbourne CBD alone. “The support from first aid providers was outstanding and made a real difference,” he said. “By managing a large number of lower

acuity patients on site, they allowed our paramedics to focus on the most serious and time critical emergencies.” Despite the increased workload, early evening crowds were generally well behaved, with demand escalating later in the night as celebrations continued. “I want to thank our paramedics, first responders, Communications Centre staff and our command teams for their professionalism and teamwork during a very demanding shift,” Mr Emery said. “As we head into the rest of the summer period, we’re reminding people to celebrate responsibly, look after one another, and take care with alcohol, fireworks and risky behaviour.”

Vintage treasures roll in to town

SOME rare, classic cars rolled in to town last weekend and headed to Lake Pertobe for the annual vintage car display. The vehicles were showcased by enthusiasts from far and wide and this year’s event (once again hosted by the Warrnambool and District Historical Vehicle Club) featured a showcase of classic German marques – celebrating 100 years of Mercedes Benz. The Warrnambool club was founded in 1973 and comprises members with a shared passion for restoring, preserving and sharing veteran, vintage and classic vehicles. This includes trucks, cars, tractors, motorcycles and stationary engines. Over the year’s the club’s annual Lake Pertobe display has become a favourite among not only local residents but also visitors to the region over the busy holiday period.

Flagstaff Hill service manager Ashley Ansell said that the first

two weeks of the year had been very strong. “The first couple of weeks of January have had that inbetween weather where it’s warm enough to get out and about, but not quite a beach day,” he said. “Flagstaff Hill is perfect for a day like this. There’s plenty to see and do, and the school holiday program adds that extra layer of fun for families. “The Penguin Protectors Warrnambool sessions with the Maremma dogs have also been very popular this year.” He said the second half of January could be a great time for locals to visit.

“The second two weeks of January are usually a bit quieter than the first, as visitors from outside the region head back to work,” he said. “For locals, that makes it a really good window to come in. “Everyone who lives in the Warrnambool City Council municipality gets free entry, and with our school holiday program running until January 23, there’s still lots of fun on offer.” As well as the garrison activity, the school holiday program includes storytelling, hands-on crafts, cooking and more. Small railways bring big smiles MODEL railway enthusiasts of all ages were treated to a range of colourful displays at St Joseph’s Primary School last weekend. The annual exhibit, organised by members of the Warrnambool Model Railway Club, once again attracted large crowds to the event – all eager to browse the 22 layouts across the hall. According to club president, Luke Van Rijthoven, the event was once again a popular one. “We have been running this annually for the last 10 years at this venue (St Joseph’s

Primary) and before that in the Archie Graham Centre,” Mr Van Rijthoven said. “It’s always a lot of fun and we as a club are very proud of our exhibits. “The Warrnambool club started in 1980 and we have around 32 members. Last weekend we had 22 layouts and five vendors which was terrific.” The Warrnambool Model Railway Club meets each Tuesday from 6pm at its clubrooms on Merrivale Drive. 3D boost for cancer centre THE latest in 3D technology is now being used to produce vital parts for equipment at South West Healthcare, Warrnambool.

Thanks to the generosity of Peter’s Project Foundation donors, the hospital has recently upgraded its 3D technology, which is being used by staff in the radiation department of the South West Regional Cancer Centre. The new $15,700 printer will allow staff to produce larger parts in a shorter time frame according to biomedical engineer Geoff Ward. “If the cancer centre needs a spare part for a piece of medical equipment, this new 3D machine is able to print it,” he said. “This will not only cut down the amount of time it takes to produce parts, but it also expands the size of the parts our team can actually reproduce. “We are extremely grateful to the Peter’s Project Foundation for this donation.” The original 3D machine, also donated by the foundation, will now be used by the healthcare’s biomedical engineering department. Hamilton agents yarded 10,000 sheep for the first sale of the year at Hamilton with quality described as very good showing excellent weight and finish. The yarding comprised approximately 60% crossbreds and 40% Merinos. All regular buying groups were present

although not all were fully active. Despite this, the market was stronger across all classes lifting $15 to $20/head and in some cases more compared to preChristmas levels. Heavy weights averaged 600 to 700c/kg cwt while medium to light trade weights

ranged between 780 to 850c/kg cwt. Top prices included heavy crossbred ewes reaching $286 /head with Merino ewes with skin to $255 and Merino wethers with skin topping at $279/head. Terminal sires sold from $60 to $95/head. Market Reporter: Chris Agnew, MLA

SALEYARD REPORT YARDING 2,020 CHANGE 620 more

At Mortlake, agents yarded 2,020 head an increase of 603 on last week’s offering. Overall the quality was very good across most sections displaying more weight and better finish. However there was a tail of dairy and crossbred cattle present in the trade section albeit lower numbers. The cow offering comprised 60% beef cows with the balance being dairy bred. Not all regular buyers were in attendance for the yarding which consisted of 470 bullocks, 658 trade cattle, 810 cows and 82

grown bulls. The market was generally softer across most categories by 10 to 15c/kg and in places more so for the better end with secondary cattle losing 20 to 30c/kg. There was a more restricted demand for well-bred feeder steers and heifers. Heavy cows lost 10 to15c/kg while mediumweight and dairy cows were only softer in places. Grown bulls were generally 20 to 30c/kg easier. Bullocks sold to a top of 480c/kg. Better quality trade cattle ranged from 430 to

484c/kg. Heavy beef cows made between 385 and 415c/kg while medium weights sold from 330 to 378c/kg. Dairy cows particularly those with better coverage ranged from 340 to 378c/kg with one pen reaching 410c/kg. Manufacturing steers reached 427c/kg. Grown heifers ranged from 400 to 456c/ kg and grown steers sold to a top of 470c/ kg. Grown beef bulls reached up to 421c/ kg while dairy breeds made up to 378c/kg. Younger bulls sold to 440c/kg. A STABLEFORD event at the East Framlingham Golf Club attracted a scratch on 38 and David McLaren taking out the handicap event on 46-15.5-30.5. Z. Bowe won the men’s non handicap scratch on 42 while the non-handicap went strong field on December 20.

The A grade winner was Peter Harlock on 38 points, followed by Murray Smith to J. Woodhouse 38-13.5-34.5. The super sedans were exciting once again, with Brock Atkins claiming first followed by Brad Pascoe, with Dylan Barrow rounding out the top three. In the street stocks, Mick Clark claimed victory ahead of Mick Dann and Jack Jordan.

Off-track action this weekend ALONG with a stacked Sprintcar program, this Sunday’s race meeting at Premier Speedway will also see plenty of activities off the track for kids. The excitement level will reach a new notch for some of the younger race fans this weekend, with a dedicated Kids Zone set up on the Warrnambool side of the facility. The zone will be jam-packed with games and activities for the little ones while the big kids will have the chance to score a free ticket for a Sprintcar 2-seater ride. The on-track action this Sunday will include the running of the

ARB Warrnambool International Sprintcar Carnival – the ultimate prelude to the Classic, with a massive $15,000 cheque to the winner. The event will be supported by the Junior Formula 500s. Gates will open at 4pm, with a pit walk until 5pm and racing from 6pm. This Sunday looks set to be an exciting kick start to the annual ‘Classic Week’ celebrations. The running of the 53rd Flying Horse Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic will take place over the weekend of January 23-25 with three nights of action at the Allansford track.

Tigers turn pink

THE Merrivale Cricket Club community is once again throwing its support “The Merrivale Cricket Club takes great pride in its efforts of using our platform to push a cause that is greater than ourselves, to inflict real behind the McGrath Foundation. Several pink stumps events have been organised by the club in the hope to raise both awareness and funds for this vital organisation. The club recently launched its new pink uniforms for the campaign and encouraged all members, supporters and the general public to show their support through donations – no matter how large or small. Tomorrow (Saturday, January 17) the Premier division team will take on Russells Creek at Merrivale. Supporters are encouraged to get along to the clubrooms and enjoy a special pink afternoon tea as part of ‘Pinkfest.’ The pink campaign will continue on January 24 when the 3s will face Spring Creek, with the final day of the campaign due to be held on January 25.
