Kepler Street trees to stay

THIRTY mature New Zealand Christmas trees will be retained along Kepler Street.

Warrnambool City Council last week announced it would keep the trees in their current format in direct response to community feedback. Council had considered removing the trees, which are located within the footpath and have caused some damage to the path surface, and replacing them with trees planted in special pits that would reduce the risk of damage to other infrastructure. Before proceeding with any removal, council asked residents whether they were comfortable with the removal and replacement of the trees or whether they preferred to see them retained. “A clear majority of residents wanted the trees retained and feedback from Kepler Street business owners revealed most either liked the trees or felt neutral about them,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Blain said. “The overall feedback has informed our decision. Council still plans to proceed with the upgrade of the footpath to improve accessibility in our CBD, but we’ll now work around the trees. “It was great to have advice from the community and businesses about a preferred way forward and there was very strong sentiment around keeping the trees.” The trees feature in photographs from many decades ago and, as a result, have long been a part of the fabric of the city. “They provide year-round shade and stunning flowers over the Christmas period,” Cr Blain said.

Medical boost thanks to generous donors

Camperdown auxiliary members Ian Currell and Lou Ebbelaar, midwife Annita Opuku Agyeman, ENT registrar Dr Will Murphy, otorhinolaryngologist Dr Bridget Clancey, operating theatre nurse unit manager Nikki Delaney, Warrnambool auxiliary members Di Goodall, Margot Johnstone, Pamela Beechy and Carolyn Monaghan, Warrnambool College Murray-Moyne team’s Lester Campbell and Jack Frankel, and Scott Johnstone from Findex. 2024D. 2024E

THANKS to the generosity of locals, more than $140,000 of donated medical equipment has begun arriving at South West Healthcare’s Camperdown Hospital. The equipment includes a $43,000 foetal monitor and a tonsillectomy coblation system some of the bigger Melbourne hospitals don’t yet have. Three new patient trolleys for the

operating theatre – together worth $60,000 – along with a $20,000 patient trolley for the urgent care centre and the $3,000 12-month hire of a virtual-reality SmileyScope for hospitalised children are also part of the new arrivals. And according to South West Healthcare’s community partnerships manager Suzan Morey, this muchneeded medical ‘boost’ could not have been possible without the joint efforts of

individuals and groups from across the western district. “We are so grateful to these donors, and their supporters, who have worked really hard to raise $140,860 for us to purchase this new medical equipment,” Ms Morey said. “To be able to buy our first-ever coblation system, update our foetal monitor and four patient trolleys, buy a treatment chair for our urgent care centre’s isolation room, and hire a SmileyScope for our younger patients – all through donations – shows the incredible generosity of the local communities we live and work in.” Funded by members of the SWH Camperdown and District Hospital Auxiliary, a foetal monitor electronically records the heartbeat of an unborn baby and the contractions of their mum during labour. It provides a critical insight into the level of stress the baby is under during labour and birth. The tonsillectomy coblation system will be shared between theatres at Warrnambool and Camperdown. “Our Warrnambool auxiliary, together with the Murray2Moyne Cycle Relay team, Findex, and the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Bowls Club have all contributed towards this new system which is just amazing,” Ms Morey said. “This newer type of tonsillectomy

surgery is known to cause less pain than the traditional method, reduces the risk of bleeding and providers a quicker recovery.” Post-coblation, younger patients are frequently eating a normal diet within a few days and are often back at kinder/ school a week after surgery rather than a fortnight later. “This reduction in recovery time is a huge benefit for parents having to take time off work,” Ms Morey said. At a cost of $3,000 per unit to hire on a 12-month basis, the SmileyScope goggles take children on virtual-reality adventures to relieve stress and anxiety during their medical procedures. Looking through the goggles, children can swim with seals, snuggle kittens at cat cafes and relax under a starry sky. Used in leading children’s hospitals both in Australia and the United States, South West Healthcare trialled one in its paediatric unit (and one in the emergency department paediatrics treatment room) last year and had great success. “They are fantastic as a distraction for children undergoing procedures involving needles in particular,” paediatric unit nurse at Warrnambool Sophie Weir said. “Kids who have been anxious have often become more relaxed and have really enjoyed the adventures through the goggles.”

Smiles for miles in AMONG the big waves were even bigger smiles on the faces of participants at last weekend’s Disabled Surfers Association session. The Warrnambool beach was alive with laughter as a large group of volunteers and ‘champion surfers’ gathered to enjoy time in the water. For some it was their first time on a board while for others it was another opportunity to refine their skills. The sessions cater for all ages and abilities and a range of specialised equipment is on hand, including beach wheelchairs, larger boards with handles, surf bean bags for extra comfort – along with an enthusiastic army of well-trained volunteers. The next Disabled Surfers Association (Warrnambool) session is scheduled for Saturday, March 16. This will run from 9am until 1pm. All welcome.

More than 150 people of all ages enjoyed a day of food, fun, games and celebration on Saturday. Participants were encouraged to take along a favourite traditional dish to share during what was a wonderful, intercultural celebration. “We all gathered to celebrate the Year of the Dragon,” co-organiser Daisy Ye said. “The day wasn’t just for Chinese, we also had Filipinos, Indonesians, Vietnamese, Koreans, Fijians, Thai, Malaysian and of course quite a few Aussies. “It was wonderful. New lights for Gardens Oval

Local football and netball players will soon be able to train and play under new lights at Port Fairy’s Gardens Oval. 2024E

WORK has begun on the installation of new lighting at Port “Work started earlier this week and included the removal of the remaining light towers, new foundations, electrical connections and the installation of Fairy’s Gardens Oval. The project has been developed by the Port Fairy Football Netball Club in partnership with Moyne Shire Council. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said lighting at the netball courts had been removed because of safety concerns and the oval lighting did not allow for night games. “The football netball club is incredibly important to the town, and the new lighting will bring the facilities up to a modern standard,” Cr Smith said. “These new lights will mean the club will no longer need to hire generators and temporary lighting for weeknight training and will allow the club to host night matches.

new lights and light towers.” Work was expected to start last Monday, February 12, with the project to be completed in time for the start of the 2024 football/netball season (with works to cease over the March long weekend). During construction there will be restricted access to work areas throughout the reserve and the public is asked to follow amended traffic and pedestrian access. The total project cost of $740,500 has been funded by $360,000 (Moyne Shire allocation of federal government LRCI round four), $250,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria and a $130,500 contribution from the Port Fairy Football Netball Club.

Relay for Life this weekend

ONE of Australia’s most-loved charity events, Relay for Life, will take place at Deakin University’s Warrnambool campus tomorrow (Saturday).

Now in its 25th year in Australia, Relay for Life has seen more than 143,000 participants across the country raise more than $14 million each year. Relays are now held in every state and territory, with every dollar raised going towards funding Cancer Council’s vital research, prevention and support programs – many of which help people in local communities every day. The Warrnambool event will celebrate its 21st year tomorrow and local sisters Jodie Carey and Emily Veale are hoping for a big turnout at Deakin University, starting at 12 noon. “Relay for Life is a fun experience that unites a community,” they said. This year, Warrnambool participants are aiming to raise $50,000. “We’re planning a big celebration at our relay; people can participate either on their own or in a team so we’re hoping local schools, clubs, teams and organisations will join us and help create awareness and funds.” Jodie, Emily and their family will be walking for their beloved mum who sadly lost her battle to cancer 11 years ago. Another to participate will be Warrnambool’s Francesca Hynes who said she has had multiple levels of motivation to take part in Relay for Life for the last 20 years. “Initially, when I had first walked one of my grandparents had died of cancer,” she said. “I was also part of a Relay for Life team at the primary school where my children attended.” Francesca continued to be involved in Relay for Life with her colleagues at St John of God Warrnambool Hospital. “We have oncology services here, and I see the most beautiful people come in for treatment. It was not a difficult thing to go out and walk and do that considering what they go through. They really do the hard yards. “I found for me, personally, that by doing Relay for Life, I was doing something positive. I took part because I saw the importance of raising money and awareness and to achieve better outcomes for people affected by cancer,”

Warrnambool sisters Jodie Carey and Emily Veale are looking forward to tomorrow’s relay. 2024D Fran said. Warrnambool Relay for Life has helped raise $2 million over 21 years. “Every year, it astounded me how much the community could raise together,” she added. Francesca said one of the best things about Relay for Life is that you can be whoever you want to be. “If you want to be upset, you can be. If you want to be there as a support for someone, you can be. Relay for Life means different things for different people, and each event is uniquely beautiful,” she said. “Cancer Council is such a trusted brand, and you know by getting involved it’s making a positive impact.” Cancer Council Victoria’s community giving manager

Renee Gani said Relay for Life is helping achieve a cancer-free future. “As a not-for-profit, we rely on the generosity of the community to fund our vital programs and services. Through support from events like Relay for Life, more than 61,000 Australian lives have been saved over the last 25 years. “Improvements in cancer prevention and screening mean that less people will hear the words, “you have cancer”. Advances to cancer treatments allow those impacted by cancer to spend more time with their loved ones. “These achievements are only possible through the support of people like you. By continuing to participate in Relay For Life we will save more lives,” Ms Gani added.

Over 100 bands registered to play in the seaside town, highlighting music from the 1920s through to 21st century improvisations. There were also bands playing music from every other style period of the 20th century, with big band, swing, bebop, modal and fusions of rock and jazz ideas. There were groups featuring vocalists and every conceivable combination of instruments.

A feature of the festival was the John Huf Award for young performers, staged in the Lecture Hall on Sunday afternoon. This attracted a strong field of four participants including siblings Ella (vocal) and Matteo Pagano (piano) from Melbourne who entertained while opening the program. Everyone’s needs are different, and so too are their budgets, likes and wants. And sadly, all too often the perfect car will never exist. We all live different lives and we all want different things from our cars. However, you can pick the right car for our needs and that’s the best place to start – take a look at your lifestyle and your requirements. Maybe you are a typical family; two adults with two or three children. Or are you young, single and still want the wind through your hair from a roof-down convertible? Or are you a retiree searching for a solid, reliable car that will last you well into your golden years? Do you go camping every weekend out in the bush, or enjoy driving across the sand dunes? Do you slowly grind your way through peak-hour traffic on congested highways or do you travel on mainly bush tracks and dirt roads? Take a close look at all these factors and then start to narrow down the type of vehicle that would best suit your lifestyle. Do you require a sedan, SUV, station wagon, hatchback, sports car, ute or an off-road vehicle? Price will also play its role in your decision so group together like-priced vehicles within your budget range and don’t be afraid to stick to that. Think about servicing your vehicle of choice. Do you have a dealer near you who can handle your make and model? Is the vehicle known to be reliable and will it be easy to get parts when needed? Are spare parts for your preferred vehicle not only easy to get but affordable? This can include the replacement costs of fuel pump, brake pads, windscreen – and don’t forget insurance. This can also add a considerable cost to the vehicle. Safety is also important. While most modern cars today are very safe, also look for ABS anti-lock brakes – are they standard? Traction control on front-wheel drive cars? Stability control? Airbags? Many new car buyers also agonise about the fuel economy of a car. However, in contrast to the costs of servicing, parts, insurance and depreciation this doesn’t form the bulk of the cost of running a vehicle. Always check the condition of warranties and extended warranties and take the time to get out on the road and test drive the cars on your shortlist. Also take the time to drive a few that possibly may not be on your ‘preferred list’ to give some comparisons. A good car dealer will allow you to take the car for a drive. Use that time wisely. A new car is an investment so make sure you consider your needs and lifestyle are met with this purchase.

MORTLAKE

MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 2024 DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by MLA’s

YARDING 2227 CHANGE 42 less Mortlake agents yarded 2,827 cattle this week representing a similar number to the previous weeks market. The offering was not as even across all categories in comparison to last week but overall it was a good yarding. There was a larger tail of crossbred types in the trade offering and an increase in numbers of manufacturing types. The bullocks and grown cattle provided plenty of weight in the lead pens and the offering of cows provided a good mix of beef and dairy breeds. Not all the regular processors were present or active, especially in the cow categories in an offering comprising 910 grown cattle, 900 trade along with 950 cows and 60 bulls. The market was softer by 20c/kg for grown and trade cattle with manufacturing types back 20 to 30c/kg with the secondary types softer again. Cows lost 35 to 40c/kg over most categories and bulls slipped 50c/kg. Vealers were selling from 255 to 345c/kg with the trade steers and heifers making from 260 to 310c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 298c with manufacturing steers selling to 270c/kg. Heavy beef cows sold from 225 to 245c with the medium weights between 180 and 220c/kg. Dairy cows were selling generally between 160 and 220c/kg with grown beef bulls to 200c/kg. Market Reporter Chris Agnew.

SOME of the district’s youngest cricketers enjoyed a competitive but fun day at Bushfield last Sunday. Celebrating the final round of the home and away season in the under 11 West competition, the youngsters enjoyed a ‘bowl off’ at the conclusion of the round’s matches. Competing for the chance to win a new bat, players were keen to put their skills to the test with the ball. Eventual winners Liam Spooner (Strikers) and Levi Barker (Raiders) were thrilled to receive their prizes from president of the North Warrnambool Eels, Jamie Harry. “The kids all had a great day and it was a terrific way to end the home and away season before finals,” Harry said. “Our games run each Sunday morning at various locations across the district, providing a great introduction to the sport of cricket. “Once the games were finished we had the bowl off and abit of a sausage sizzle. The kids will play finals this Sunday from 9am at Russells Creek.”

Finals for indoor bowls

THE first week of summer pennant finals was enjoyed by Warrnambool’s indoor bowlers last Monday night. There were some exciting finishes in good, close games. In a high-quality match, the top two sides in division one, Heytesbury Honeys and Allansford Cougars, were neck and neck for the first nine ends. The Honeys, skippered by Allen Armistead, drew away to hold a four shot buffer by end 16, and were victorious winning 17-10 after the 18th end. This puts Heytesbury straight into the grand final on Monday February 26, while the Allansford Cougars have a double chance and will compete for the second spot in the grand final next week.

The other match in division one was Maureen Drennan’s Wannon Park Dogs versus Barb Draffen’s Allanford Panthers. The Dogs got off to a flying start, claiming five shots on the first end. The Panthers clawed their way back and by end seven had their noses in front 8-7. The score was level at 14 shots each on end 16, with only two ends remaining in the match. The Panthers went into the last end one shot down on the card and one down in the head as the skippers crossed to play their bowls. Two great shots by skipper Barb made three shots on the last end for a tight victory. The two Allansford sides will now meet in the preliminary final next week to see who will compete against Heytesbury in the grand final.

Eccles wins at East Fram

In division two, the double chance match was played between Debbie Keane’s Koroit Hornets and Ian Heatly’s Allansford Jaguars. The Hornets proved too strong on the night, winning six of the first nine ends to lead 145. The Jaguars fought back to win five of the last eight ends but the Hornets proved too good and so will progress straight into the grand final. The knock-out match was played between Gill Phillip’s Port Fairy Seagulls and Scott Pierce’s Dennington Dashers. The Seagulls held a strong 13-5 lead after end 12, but a strong finish by the Dashers saw them win five of the last six ends to trail by five shots, 9-14. On the last end, the Dashers had the kitty surrounded by yellow bowls and only a terrific shot by Gill Phillips cut the Dashers

score back to two on the last end to secure victory for Port Fairy, who will now meet Allansford Jaguars next week. Division three was fought out between Keith Cameron’s Dennington Devils and Clarrie Matthews’ Allansford Pumas. Although the Pumas won 7-11, the score was heavily in favour of the Devils who managed a 26-7 shot win. The knock-out game in division three was played between Max Heard’s Koroit Jets and Rylan Pech’s Grangeburn. This game came down to the wire with Grangeburn one shot behind going into the last end. Koroit was able to secure two shots to win 21-18. Preliminary finals will be played next Monday, February 19 from 7.30pm at the Val Bertrand netball stadium in Caramut Rd.

The four-week program will be led by HFNL Talent Identification and Development Program Coordinator Brett Taylor and Western Bulldogs Academy coach Ben Walsh. The aim of the program is to improve the opportunities for Hampden players, giving them every opportunity to realise their potential to compete in the elite talent pathways programs such as V-Line Cup, Coates Talent League, VFL and AFL. The inaugural squad of 35 will comprise of players from across all Hampden FNL clubs. Program coordinator Brett Taylor said this was a critical period for physical and skill development for young footballers. “The program aims to develop skills and knowledge in an

environment focusing on refining technical skills, decision making skills and game strategies through ball centred activities and modified games,” Taylor said. The squad includes: Paddy Hassett and Zavier Fowler (Camperdown); George Clark, Angus Ewing, Riley Iredell, Charlie Baker, Isacc Lehmann and Harry Mercer (Hamilton Kangaroos). Dylan Delaney, Mitchell McCosh and Blake O’Keefe (Koroit); Jake Denaro, Charlie Jellie, Max Hogan, Hamish Ross and Caleb Stuart (North Warrnambool); Louis Greene, Hugh Allen and Harry Pollock (Port Fairy). Judd Carter and Jensen Moore (Portland); Jacob Lucas, Paddy Sell, Jimmy Stevens, Patrick Ragg and Mali Lual (South Warrnambool). Darnel Nguena and Leonard Walsh (Cobden); Mason Barr, Tayte McMaster and Sam Wareham (Terang Mortlake) and Toby Hellessey, Archie McGrath, Jasper Moore and Oliver Turner (Warrnambool).

South girls make Rebels SOUTH Warrnambool footballers Maggie Johnstone, Scarlett O’Donnell, Grace Schrama and Oliva Wolter have been named in the GWV Rebels under 18s Girls Squad. The squad of 38 girls, for the 2024 Coates Talent League season, was announced yesterday (Thursday) by head coach Sally Riley. “We are really excited to have arrived at our final list of 38 players,” Riley said.

“These girls have worked really hard in the preseason and have shown great growth and development in their skills. “It’s so wonderful to see young women from across our Rebels region perform well at training and during trial games and now they have a real opportunity to take their football to the next level.” Riley added that there were “many” young footballers who would now face a variety of obstacles across the season, but she believed they would relish every challenge and represent the GWV Rebels jumper with great pride.

“Outside of Ballarat we have had three satellite programs in the southwest, Warrnambool and Horsham regions, where girls have been under the watchful eye of some of our very experienced coaches,” Riley said. “It’s wonderful to see that we have seven girls in our program for the very first time, they missed out on our 16s program, have gone back to local community football and really put their heads down and worked hard on their skill development,” she said. “That’s the most pleasing thing about our girls, their willingness to learn, seek honest

feedback and keep improving. The other exciting part of our squad is that two of our girls Tansy Seymour and Lucy Eales were a part of our development squad last year, didn’t miss a training in 2023 and have now made their way onto our playing list.” The girls will soon come together as a full squad once a week in Ballarat, be part of the Coates Talent League testing day and a practice match against Geelong before round one under lights at GMHBA stadium against the Geelong Falcons in the annual Easter Thursday clash on April 28.

“The ladies love the challenge of our course, the camaraderie of the day and this year’s event also gave people the opportunity to enjoy our new clubhouse which was opened last Thursday.” The Bowl, now in its 60th year at Warrnambool, honours Mrs Marjorie Robinson, a former women’s captain, president, secretary and life member of the Warrnambool Golf Club. Mrs Robinson was widely respected for her knowledge of rules and etiquette, her readiness to help beginners, her fairness and her approachable manner.

Played over 18 holes each day, this year’s event involved a four-ball better ball stableford on Monday, with a single stableford on Tuesday. Warrnambool Golf Club’s Jennifer McMahon, Anne Hunt, Susan Rea and Cheryl Carroll put on a strong performance on Tuesday to finish on top of the leader board. More than a dozen clubs were represented over the two days, with teams travelling from as far away as Mornington, Torquay, Horsham, Curlewis, Midlands and many others.
