FOUR years ago automotive mechanic Shehroz Norton Motor Group service manager James Norton said the DAMA had proved successful for the business, and this new Fayyaz started his new life in Warrnambool.

Originally from Karachi in Pakistan, he had most recently worked in Dubai before moving to Warrnambool through the Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA).

The agreement helps regional employers address critical workforce shortages by providing access to skilled overseas workers in occupations that cannot be filled locally.

With support from his employer, Norton Motor Group, Mr Fayyaz settled into his new workplace and completed further training, progressing from vehicle servicing to general repairs.

After spending his first year in Warrnambool alone, he was joined by his wife and now seven year-old daughter.

Mr Fayyaz said his family was enjoying life in Warrnambool.

“We just like roaming around. My daughter really likes walking in the city centre,” he said.

“It’s a good city, the coastal areas, I like it very much.

Australians have been really welcoming, especially my neighbours.”

To help make the settlement process easier for new migrants, the Great South Coast councils have launched a new online settlement guide.

Developed by the Warrnambool City, Moyne, Corangamite, Colac-Otway, Glenelg and Southern Grampians councils, the website brings together trusted information in one place.

This covers housing, healthcare, education, employment, transport, community groups, emergency services, recreation and everyday life.

“The DAMA has been really successful for us. We would have had 10 to 12 over the years and eight of them are still with us, which is really good,” he said.

“You spend a lot of time with them, which is a good thing, but having this new resource is going to be great for us so that they can land on their feet and get settled as quickly as possible.

“When they get settled quickly, they’re going to be better at work and also more likely to stay for a long period of time, and that’s what we want.”

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the initiative recognised that attracting skilled workers to regional Victoria was only part of the solution.

“We were the first region in Victoria to establish a DAMA in partnership with the federal government, and since 2019 we’ve seen skilled workers move to the region to fill critical shortages in key areas,” Cr Blain said.

“If new arrivals can settle in and feel part of the community, then they’re more likely to stay for the long term.

“The website has been set up with migrants in mind, but realistically it’s a handy resource for anyone moving to the region looking to connect with services and groups.”

Dedicated menopause clinic now open WOMEN across the southwest can now access free, specialist menopause care close to home.

South West Healthcare has this week opened a dedicated (public) menopause clinic at the Warrnambool Base Hospital, giving women across the district free access to specialist menopause care locally – with the clinic now accepting GP referrals.

Funded through the state government’s women’s health clinics program, the menopause clinic brings a multidisciplinary team together under the one roof.

This includes gynaecologist and clinical director Dr Rosy Buchanan, and midwife and nurse specialist Sarah Pohlner.

They will be supported by a physiotherapist, a social worker, and South West Healthcare’s dietitians and continence nurse.

Appointments will be free of charge, with the clinic located on level four (women’s health service) of the hospital.

The menopause clinic will offer women consultation to understand menopause and peri-menopause, along with menopause hormone therapy (MHT) advice and alternative options, prescription and management.

Referrals will also be available to other services and allied health clinics to assist with symptoms of peri-menopause/ menopause including mental and sexual health, and pelvic pain.

Referrals can also be made to assist with sleep, diet and overall health.

The menopause clinic is the latest clinic designed to support the health and wellbeing of women at South West Healthcare alongside pelvic pain physiotherapy (also open to trans patients), the sexual and reproductive health hub (open to all genders) and public fertility care in partnership with The Women’s Hospital.

The clinic will also work alongside the Birth Reflections Clinic, providing support and closure to families (including fathers) who experienced traumatic or an unexpected birth.

Antenatal wellbeing appointments can also be scheduled with a social worker or perinatal psychiatrist.

Menopause can affect a women’s physical, mental and emotional health – and every woman will experience this differently.

mental health impacts, sleep disturbances and weight gain to name a few,” Dr Rosy Buchanan said.

“For many women menopause can be managed with their GP, but for those who need specialised care, or for those who don’t have access to a GP trained to manage menopause, our clinic is here to assist.”

Chief executive of South West Healthcare Craig Fraser said the service was proud to offer a clinic dedicated to menopause care for women in the region.

“Thanks to funding from the state government’s women’s clinics, we’ve been able to recruit some amazing staff to this team to ensure local women have equal access to specialist menopause care as those in metro areas,” Mr Fraser said.

Women who are unable to see a GP to obtain a referral are encouraged to utilise the free women’s health virtual clinic which is open 9am-5pm weekdays.

Cash boost for festivals and events THE Koroit Irish Festival and Port Fairy Marathon are just two of more than 20 events that will share in almost $150,000 of funding through Moyne Shire’s 2026/27 Festival and Event Funding Program.

Moyne Shire Council will invest almost $150,000 in 21 festivals and events across the municipality, supporting a calendar of activities that collectively help drive millions of dollars into the local economy.

At a recent council meeting, councillors approved $149,600 through the 2026/27 Festival and Event Funding Program, providing support for a diverse range of community, cultural, sporting and tourism events across the shire.

The funding comes as new economic impact data highlights the significant value of events to Moyne communities.

In 2025, events across the shire generated an estimated $22.1 million in economic output, supported 92 jobs, attracted more than 105,000 attendances across 103 events, and generated an additional 31 cents of economic activity for every dollar spent at events.

Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the figures demonstrated that events were much more than entertainment.

“Events play such a vital role in our communities. They bring our people together, attract visitors, support local businesses and create economic opportunities across the shire, but most

importantly create phenomenal longlasting memories,” Cr Lockett said.

“From large-scale festivals that draw thousands of visitors to smaller community celebrations that strengthen local connections, these events help showcase everything that makes Moyne such a great place to live, play and visit.

“It’s not just our opinion either. Port Fairy was ranked by Australian Traveller in May 2026 as the number one town in Australia for festivals and events, and the top town in Victoria to visit.”

Cr Lockett said the strong response to this year’s funding program reflected the passion and commitment of the shire’s community organisations and volunteers.

“We received 21 applications seeking more than $175,000, highlighting both the demand for support and the incredible range of events on offer across Moyne,” he said.

Cr Lockett said council was pleased to support a mix of long-established events and new initiatives.

“Popular events such as the Koroit Irish Festival, Moyneyana Festival, Port Fairy Marathon, Koroit Truck Show, Spring Music Festival and Port Fairy Jazz Festival continue to be important drawcards for our region, delivering significant economic and community benefits.

“It’s also exciting to welcome the Macarthur Pool 60th anniversary celebration as a first-time funding recipient.

“These events are only possible

because of the dedication of volunteers and community groups, and we’re really pleased to support their efforts through this program.”

Funding was awarded following an assessment process against criteria including economic impact, community engagement, need for funds, retention and reinvestment, and the overall quality of applications.

Ready to roll in China THE shearing pavilion at the Warrnambool Showgrounds has become somewhat of a second ‘home’ for two of our district’s most talented hockey players on wheels.

Thomas Dark and Tim Edwards, both members of the Warrnambool Roller Hockey Club, are currently competing at the Asia-Oceania Clubs Champions Cup in China.

Speaking with the Warrnambool Weekly late last week (before they flew out on Sunday night) the pair said they were eager to test their skills against players from other countries.

“It’s pretty exciting to be heading overseas to play,” Thomas said.

“It’s my first time overseas. We have a pretty full-on program so I’m not sure how much sight seeing we’ll get to do, there’s quite a lot of game time and training sessions.”

In order to qualify for the Asia-Oceania Cup, the team needed to win the Australian Club Championships.

“Our Warrnambool club didn’t have enough players to compete in the Australian Club Championships in Brisbane last October so Thomas and I joined with players from the Mordialloc club to make a team,” Tim said.

“We won that tournament which qualified us for the next level in China.

The winner of that will head to the World Club Championships.”

Roller hockey, while classified as a non-contact sport, can be quite physical and Thomas and Tim train regularly to keep themselves fit.

“Teams have four floor players out there at any one time plus a goal keeper,” they explained.

“We wear quad skates and yes, the ball is quite hard and can hurt if you get hit, but it’s all part of the challenge of the game.

“We were both raised around the sport, with family members involved when we were kids, so it was a natural progression really.

“We love it and it’s great to be able to play our sport at quite a high level.”

Thomas and Tim will fly home this weekend.

And for Tim the international experience will continue in October when he represents Australia at the World Skate Games in Asuncion, Paraguay from October 10-18.

Melbourne in January with absolutely no expectations whatsoever,” he said.

“When I was told I’d made the Australian team I was pretty surprised to be honest but it will be an amazing experience.”

Tim will be one of more than 10,000 athletes at the games, representing over 100 countries in 12 sports.

In the intercontinental group draw (group B), Australia’s men’s team will take on Colombia, Brazil, Egypt and South Africa.

Group A includes Switzerland, Austria, the United States, India and Mexico.

The council recently endorsed three motions it will put forward for consideration at the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) State Council.

The motions call for increased funding for aquatic infrastructure, the reinstatement of the Country Roads and Bridges Program, and ongoing flexible infrastructure funding for local government.

These priorities reflect some of the most pressing challenges facing Moyne and rural councils across Victoria.

Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said council was committed to ensuring the needs of local communities were heard at the highest levels.

“Strong advocacy is one of the most important roles of local government, and Moyne will continue to make the case for the investment our communities need,” Cr Lockett said.

“Whether it’s maintaining vital road networks, upgrading community infrastructure or ensuring our aquatic facilities can be replaced and upgraded, regional councils need fair and sustainable funding” The motions recognise the critical role local infrastructure plays in supporting liveable, connected and resilient communities, while highlighting the increasing financial pressures facing councils.

“These are not just Moyne issues, they are challenges being experienced by councils across rural and regional Victoria,” Cr Lockett said.

“By working together with other council’s through the MAV, we can strengthen our voice and advocate for practical solutions that deliver real benefits for our communities.”

This unique event is being held to celebrate the centenary of the Warrnambool Racing Pigeon Club and to help raise the money needed to purchase a new Prostate Cancer Detector System for the Warrnambool Base Hospital.

According to event coordinator and community partnerships manager at South West Healthcare Suzan Morey, it is hoped the general public and local businesses will get behind the event and sponsor a bird.

“These beautiful birds have small wings but big hearts, and we’re hoping the hearts of those in our community will once again get behind this very worthwhile fundraiser,” Ms Morey said.

“The race is certainly a very unique one.

The pigeons will compete in a 320 kilometre flight from Lascelles to Warrnambool via the Little Desert, Grampians National Park and the volcanic plains of western Victoria to Warrnambool.”

According to Ms Morey, there are three ways to be involved.

This year’s community fundraising auction for the Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre will once again feature more than 100 donated items.

The online auction, which started last Saturday, August 1, will run through until this Sunday, August 9.

This year there are many items to choose from, including 18ct rose gold earrings made in Milano, Italy, Barb’s famous raspberry and white choc muffins, Ariel’s Lego castle, bam stone paving, an outdoor setting, gym memberships and local food and wine vouchers.

The Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre is a registered charity supporting women and families.

Run by a volunteer committee comprised of professionals and users of the centre, each year the committee raises funds to ensure the sustainability of the centre.

Town signage on council radar TOWN signage across Moyne Shire has been the focus of a recent council audit.

Moyne Shire Council has completed a comprehensive audit of township entry and locality signage, identifying priority upgrades to improve the presentation, visibility and consistency of signs across the municipality.

The audit assessed 148 signs across the shire, including gateway entry, locality name and feature signs as well as signs hosting local clubs and organisations.

It found 32 locality name signs are missing, damaged or in poor condition and require priority replacement.

Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the audit would help council focus investment where it is most needed.

“Township and locality signs are often the first impression people have when they arrive in our communities,” Cr Lockett said.

“This audit provides a clear picture of the condition of our signage network and identifies the locations where replacements should be prioritised.

“Maintaining quality

signage helps strengthen community pride and ensures visitors are welcomed by towns that present well.”

The audit found 64 per cent of signs are in good, very good or excellent condition, while 81 per cent have good, very good or excellent visibility.

As part of the signage program, council has already replaced more than 40 municipal boundary signs and upgraded worn and faded Port Fairy welcome signage.

The project also included a review of council’s signage policy and the development of a framework outlining the process for any future consideration of Traditional Owner naming recognition on signage.

No changes to township names, locality names or existing signage are proposed as part of the audit.

Any future changes would be subject to separate council consideration and community consultation.

Council will now progress replacement of priority locality signs and undertake community and stakeholder engagement to help inform future signage initiatives across the shire.

Artist brings creativity to Koroit TALENTED Warrnambool artist Matthew Clarke has added a splash of colour and creative flare to an exterior wall at the Koroit Theatre.

Clarke’s original artwork is now on display as part of Creative Moyne’s new BIG ART.SMALL TOWNS public art program.

The inaugural exhibition features three large-scale works by Clarke, and a new artwork by Mortlake-based Wiradjuri artist Chrystel Galea at the Mortlake Community Hub. Moyne Shire mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the program was designed to make art more visible and accessible while supporting regional artists.

“Public art brings creativity into the places where we live, work and visit,” Cr Lockett said.

“This program creates opportunities for artists to showcase their work while giving residents and visitors something new to discover in our towns.

“In the age of AI-generated rubbish art there’s never been a more important time to celebrate the artistic wonder humans create.”

Matthew Clarke’s exhibition includes works inspired by personal experiences and people who have shaped his life.

The current artworks, on free exhibition, will remain on display until October 31, 2026.

The public art program will present four exhibitions each year at both locations, rotating every three months, creating an ongoing showcase of regional creativity across Moyne.

Visitors can learn more about the artists and the works by scanning the QR codes installed at each site or at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/CreativeMoyne RIGHT: Warrnambool artist Matthew Clarke has brought colour to Koroit.

At Mortlake agents yarded 1,070 head a decrease of Heavy beef cows remained firm while some medium and light weight dairy cows were slightly stronger by 5 to 10 c/kg 200 compared with the previous sale.

Quality was much more mixed reflecting a typical winter yarding with very few good heavy bullocks on offer.

More than half the yarding consisted of cows. The cow offering comprised 27% beef cows with the balance being dairy bred.

Most regular buyers were in attendance and whilst not all were fully active, there was solid feeder competition throughout.

The yarding included 74 bullocks, 324 trade cattle, 616 cows and 56 grown bulls.

Despite the mixed quality the market generally remained firm to dearer particularly for secondary cattle.

Some heifers suitable for feeding eased by 10 to 15c/ kg although results were erratic at times with the majority purchased by feeders.

Grown heifers were softer by around 20c while bulls improved by 15 to 20c/kg.

Bullocks sold to a top of 470c with grown steers reaching 500c and crossbred steers making up to 480c/kg. Grown heifers ranged from 440 to 494c/kg while dairy-bred manufacturing steers sold to 432c/kg.

Better quality trade cattle ranged from 500 to 536c/kg with feeders paying up to 525c/kg. Heavy beef cows sold between 395 and 435c while medium weight beef cows made from 360c to 390c/kg.

Better covered dairy cows ranged from 360 to 404c/kg.

Grown beef bulls reached 482c dairy bulls sold to 440c with younger bulls making up to 462c/kg.

Hamilton Agents yarded 2,400 lambs this week kg cwt with the market topping at $385head.

Light lambs weighing 12 to 16kg sold from $115 to $199/ an increase of 400 head on last week while sheep head. numbers fell by 180 head to 820 head.

Advertisers responsibility

The lamb offering was mixed with a very small selection of the better quality drafts most of which were supplementary fed medium-weight lambs.

There were also some heavier trade lambs and a limited number of quality lightweight trade lambs available although quality declined through the sale with a larger proportion of plainer lambs on offer.

Not all regular buyers were present resulting in a restricted buying field while some processors were operating with limited activity.

As a result the market corrected by $20 to $30/head overall with some categories recording even larger falls. Very few lambs attracted feeder interest.

Trade lambs sold to average between 1030c/kg and 1150c/

Upsets in first round of finals

WEEK one of finals produced some upset results in the Orford and District Table Tennis competition.

Steve Newell celebrates his first 180.

First 180 for Newell STEVE Newell threw his very first Brittain (Vikings) and Brendan Galloway 180 in last week’s Warrnambool (Panmure Mixed Nuts).

Colin Drewry form the Vikings had a high darts competition. peg of 116 on the night.

Drake wins A grade AFTER a good round on the fairways, Murray Drake took out the men’s A grade competition at East Framlingham Golf Club last weekend.

Drake finished on 81-9-72 to take the win, ahead of Anthony Eccles in second on 90-17-73 and Gerard Eccles third 82-7-75.

They were followed by Brett Willsher 79-4-75 and Ayden Bosse 87-10-77.

B grade was won by Josh McDonald on 97-24-73 from Bryan Langler 111-35-76, Brett Holmes 103-27-76, Rodney Mapleson 100-22-78 and Glen Tracey 106-26-80.

Nearest the pins: 3rd and 9th Jordan Cashin, 6th Ayden Bosse and 7th John Eccles.

The social winner was Glenn Tracey and the monthly medal winner Murray Drake.

This Saturday will be stableford. All welcome.

They have pushed the Warrnambool Warriors in past matches, but when it counted St Helens delivered the goods, using their past losses as education.

The win propels last year’s B grade winner into the grand final with a week off, which may or may not be an advantage.

Attunga, who was also expected to win, went out in a night of upsets earlier this week.

Both the A and B grade preliminary finals will be played in the Orford Hall next Wednesday starting at 7.30pm.

A final is won by the side who wins six rubbers, although this week a couple of teams got a little enthusiastic and played one more.

Presentation night will be held at the Kirkstall Hall from 7pm on Wednesday, September 2 and all present and past members are welcome.

The A grade preliminary final will be played between Koroit and Warrnambool Warriors.

The Warriors have had convincing 7-3 wins against Koroit in both encounters this year.

The Warriors will be out to again play off in the grand final after losing just the one match for the season.

The B grade preliminary final will be between Broadwater and Tower Hill.

Tower Hill has won both matches this season and will go into the match as favourites.

Results from this week: A grade, first semi-final saw Attunga go down to Koroit 4.13-7.22.

Unfortunately, Attunga played with two players, which meant they gave away three rubbers before starting.

Both Kelly Wortley and Gus Looney won two rubbers each but were unable to win a doubles or defeat Koroit’s Fergus Monsborough who won his three rubbers.

In the second semi-final, Warrnambool Warriors lost to St Helens 3.14-6.19.

Ally Rowbottom (St Helens) defeated Warriors’ David Cranwell and Neil Ford, both who had defeated her earlier in the year.

This helped set up the win, taking pressure off St Helens, winning both the doubles.

Neither were easy wins.

Ally defeated David 11-8, 9-11, 1311, 6-11 and 11-8.

Neil’s rubber was 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 5-11 and 12-10.

Aaron Rowbottom won his three rubbers, while Peter Owen and Neil Ford won a rubber each for Warriors as well as a double rubber.

In B grade, the first semi-final saw Tower Hill defeated by Orford 3.156.18.

Win the doubles win the match rang true for Orford as they won both the doubles in long five game rubbers, 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7 and 11-9.

The second double was won 8-10, 10-12, 12-10, 11-8 and 11-9.

The other plus for Orford was Russell Hussey defeating both Darren Smith and Gavin Rowbottom.

In the second B grade semi-final, Broadwater defeated Glengleeson 7.21-1.7.

Again, winning the doubles contributed to this win although the second doubles was hard fought.

Broadwater won 12-10, 14-12 and 11-9.

Both Andrea and Peter Drendel won two rubbers each for Broadwater.

Gareth Spring was Glengleeson’s winner.

The senior men’s Teal side defeated Hamilton 4-0, with goal keeper Malusi Msomi named best after making several great saves.

The women’s team took on the Wolves and celebrated a 2-1 victory, with Amber Cubitt named Player of the Match.

In the juniors, the under 17s defeated Hamilton 3-1 (Logan Wythe player of the match) while the under 14 Teal side lost to Wolves Yellow 2-3.

In the under 12, Blue defeated Grampians 8-nil.

Old Collegians were too strong for the Warrnambool and District Russells Creek, scoring a 55-38 win. senior football competition.

At Nirranda, the Blues had a 20.8.128 to 7.4.46 win over Merrivale.

Merrivale’s best were Manny Sandow, Sean Barnes and Sam Gleeson, with Tyler Anderton kicking two goals.

At Davidson Oval, Russells Creek scored a 21.8.134 to 8.7.55 win.

Blues in the finals mix A WELL-earned 47 point win over Cobden has given Warrnambool a four point buffer over South on the Hampden League senior football ladder.

The Blues are currently holding on to fifth spot with just three home and away rounds remaining for season 2026.

Playing at the Cobden Recreation Reserve last Saturday, the visitors went out hard in the opening quarter, kicking four majors to two before extending their lead to 15 points by the main break.

The third quarter saw the Blues add three goals five to the board while containing the Bombers to 1.4 for the term.

And in the final term, the Blues came home strong, kicking a creditable five goals four while the Bombers were restricted to 2.3.

Best for the Blues in a solid team effort were Amon Radley, Jordan Walters, Reggie Mast, Taylem Wason, Harry Ryan and Riley Holloway.

Mast was the most effective in front of goals, kicking four for the day, while team-mates Xavier McCartney and Heath Morgan-Morris contributed two each.

In other round 15 matches last weekend, Koroit celebrated a narrow six-point win over Portland, the Roosters enjoyed a 29-point victory at home over Camperdown, while Port Fairy went down to the Eagles by 60 points and the Bloods accounted for Hamilton by 116 points.

This weekend will see Koroit host Cobden, Camperdown and Portland will meet at Leura Oval, the Blues and Port Fairy will clash at Reid and North Warrnambool will host the Bloods.

South Warrnambool will travel to Melville Oval to take on Hamilton.

In Hampden League Open netball action, wins went to Warrnambool, Koroit, South Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Terang Mortlake.

South Warrnambool continued to dominate and remain two games clear at the top of the ladder, followed by Koroit, Port Fairy and Cobden, with Warrnambool rounding out the top five.
