Mayor welcomes longer trains

Complaints process: A copy of our complaints policy can be obtained by emailing publisher@ warrnamboolweekly.com.au or on our website warrnamboolweekly.com.au.

LAST week’s announcement that six-carriage trains will soon operate on the Warrnambool line has been welcomed by mayor Cr Ben Blain. The longer trains are expected to begin taking passengers on select Friday and weekend services later this year. “This is great news for Warrnambool and a common sense solution to the discomfort of crowded trains, which often meant people were standing for hours,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said. “Council, along with local media and public transport users, had argued for trains with greater capacity for some time. “The state government and V/Line have responded with a commitment to introduce trains that can carry more passengers, which is a really positive outcome.” The current three-carriage trains carry about 220 passengers, the six-carriage

trains will double that. “We had been told the sticking point was that our platforms were not long enough to accommodate longer trains,” Cr Blain said. “This explanation was difficult to accept because this issue had been overcome on other train lines so we knew it was possible on the Warrnambool line. “If we were to wait for longer platforms at our stations, it would be years before we had trains big enough to meet the demand. “V/Line is to be commended for this really sensible approach which will involve door banners, on-board announcements and monitoring by conductors to ensure passengers enter and exit the longer trains safely. “Testing of the new carriage configuration is already under way and we’ve been advised by V/Line the longer trains with greater passenger capacity will be operational later this year,” Cr Blain said.

Bigger trains for Warrnambool line SIX carriage trains will begin running on the Warrnambool line later this year. Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora last Friday morning announced the state government was boosting capacity for Warrnambool line passengers, with six-carriage VLocity trains to run for the first time in the coming months. V/Line is now in the final stages of planning and commenced testing the six carriage trains last Thursday night. Once testing is complete, the six carriage trains will operate on busy Friday and weekend services later this year. The introduction of the longer trains follows the recent completion of the Warrnambool stabling facility, which has enabled more trains to be housed in Warrnambool overnight. To safely operate the longer trains, V/Line conductors and staff will communicate with passengers when the trains approach stations. Passengers who want to reserve a seat for their journey should continue to book ahead before they travel. “This improvement is backed by the completion of the Warrnambool line upgrade which improved safety and reliability, delivered additional services and allowed modern V/Locity trains to travel on the line for the first time,” Ms Ermacora said. “We continue to bring costs down for families, with half price fares for everyone until the end of the year.” Since the introduction of the regional fare cap, Warrnambool line passengers are saving more than $70 on return trips.

Western Victoria MP Jacinta Ermacora with one of the passengers on the first V/Locity train as it arrived in Warrnambool late 2024. “Whether you’re heading to the city for a medical appointment, sporting event, or to visit family and friends, we’re providing more capacity and making it easier to find a seat on our busiest services with six carriage trains,” Ms Ermacora said. Minister for Public Transport Vicki

Ward said boosting capacity on the Warrnambool line would ensure more people can take advantage of the cheaper fares. “We’re continuing to invest in south west Victoria with more services, a new stabling yard for trains, and upgraded

level crossings,” she said. When asked if the introduction of more carriages to the line would also include the re-instatement of an onboard café, a representative from Ms Ermacora’s office replied “not at this stage – the emphasis is on building passenger capacity.”

Fundraiser ready to take flight THIS Sunday will see 150 pigeons take to the skies for the much-anticipated Great Australian Pigeon Race fundraiser for South West Healthcare (SWH). Members of the Warrnambool Racing Pigeon Club have joined forces with SWH to celebrate the club’s 100th birthday and help raise $115,000 for a new prostate cancer detector system. This Sunday, the pigeons will race 320 kilometres from Lascelles to Warrnambool. Since announcing the appeal in the Weekly just three weeks ago, race organiser Suzan Morey said the fundraiser had “really taken flight.” “Eleven Warrnambool club members have registered 150 of their beloved birds for the competition which is amazing,” Ms Morey said. “They’ll fly across the Little Desert, Grampians National Park and the volcanic plains of western

Victoria before coming in to land in Warrnambool. “We are absolutely thrilled with the broad communitywide response this initiative has received, with sponsors from as far away as Canberra, Mornington, Echuca and Penola. “This includes businesses, auxiliaries, clubs, families and individuals – they’ve all enthusiastically become involved by sponsoring and buying the naming rights to each of these pigeons.” According to Ms Morey, $10,000 was raised in one day alone. “This fundraiser really has gone even beyond all expectations,” she said. “It has been a huge amount of fun for everyone and we’re all looking forward to Sunday’s race.” The pigeons will take off at around 10am Sunday and by 7pm that night the race results will be known – with updates on South West Healthcare’s Facebook feed on Monday morning.

Road safety campaign continues REDUCED speed limit signs have been erected along the Hopkins Highway between Warrnambool and Bushfield. The new 80 km/h speed limit signs mark an important milestone in local residents’ push to improve road safety for families and communities travelling between Warrnambool, Bushfield and Woodford according to founder and campaign lead of Connecting Warrnambool, Elise McKinnon. “The speed limit has been reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h between Warrnambool and Bushfield Oval, with the 80 km/h zone also extended further north of Bushfield,” Ms McKinnon said. Ms McKinnon believes the changes will help create a safer road environment for local families, freight operators and everyone travelling along the corridor. “It was incredibly special taking my children, Luca and Daisy, out to see the new signs,” she said. “Our children and families travel this road regularly. Seeing the speed limit reduced is a tangible reminder of what can be achieved when the community, government and road authorities work constructively together. “The northern extension provides motorists, trucks and B-doubles with additional distance to reduce speed before approaching the Bridge Road and Hopkins Highway intersection.” According to Ms McKinnon, the Department of Transport and Planning has also reviewed line marking around the intersection as part of the safety improvements. “Road safety changes often require extensive assessment, coordination and approval, so we are enormously grateful for the constructive and timely response from DTP and Warrnambool City Council,” Ms McKinnon said. “Connecting Warrnambool only began in May, and the progress achieved since then reflects what can happen when community evidence, government support and respectful collaboration come together. “This is not an achievement belonging to one person or organisation. It is a shared result made possible by residents who contributed their experiences, council’s advocacy and DTP’s willingness to listen and act.” Since May, Connecting Warrnambool has gathered more than 330 community survey responses; secured unanimous recognition and support from Warrnambool City Council; met directly with the Department of Transport and Planning; and helped build evidence supporting the reduction of the Hopkins Highway speed limit from 100 km/h to 80 km/h. The group has also supported the

extension of the reduced-speed zone further north of Bushfield; contributed community observations to the review of the Bridge Road intersection and its line marking; and continued working behind the scenes on safer active-transport connections into Warrnambool’s north. Ms McKinnon said the reduced-speed environment could also support future investigation of a safe, separated walking and cycling connection along or near the highway corridor. “Reducing the speed limit does not, by itself, make it safe to walk or cycle beside the highway,” she said. “However, it creates a more appropriate road environment in which potential corridor widening, greater separation and dedicated active-transport infrastructure can be properly explored. “Bushfield, Woodford and surrounding communities have very few local services and rely heavily on Warrnambool for education, employment, shopping, sport, health services and social connection. “People who cannot drive currently have very limited alternatives. Children should have the opportunity to travel safely to school, visit friends, attend sports training or access the services they need without depending entirely on their parents to drive them.” She believes a safe, separated connection would also provide cyclists, families, older residents and people without access to a vehicle with a practical alternative for reaching Warrnambool. “The new 80 km/h environment is therefore more than a road-safety improvement for motorists. It is also a positive first step towards considering how this corridor could safely connect people as well as vehicles.” She added that Connecting Warrnambool members would continue working with government, landholders and potential partners to identify practical opportunities for safer walking and cycling connections. “Any future pathway would require proper planning, engineering, funding and engagement with relevant landholders and authorities,” Ms McKinnon said. “There appears to be suitable space along parts of the corridor that may offer future opportunities, including the potential to widen or better separate an activetransport connection from the road. “That work is still at an early stage, but the reduced-speed environment creates a more positive foundation from which those possibilities can be investigated.” Connecting Warrnambool will also continue advocating for an urgent review of a targeted 60 km/h zone through the Bridge Road intersection and along the Bushfield Recreation Reserve frontage.

Local children Luca and Daisy McKinnon at the new signs. The reserve attracts hundreds of children, players, families, volunteers and visitors for football, netball, Auskick, cricket and other community activities. Many local families and Woodford Primary School students live on the opposite side of the highway and must cross it to access school, sport, friends and community facilities. The intersection has also been associated with crashes, vehicles leaving the road, heavy-vehicle incidents and repeated impacts with roadside infrastructure. “A targeted 60 km/h zone would not replace the need for longer-term engineering and safe-crossing improvements,

however, it could provide an immediate and proportionate safety measure while the intersection, traffic volumes, heavyvehicle movements, crossing activity and contemporary road environment are properly assessed. “We are proud of what the community and our government partners have achieved together in a relatively short period, but the work is not finished. We do not want to wait for a fatality or serious injury before every reasonable safety option is considered. “But for today we are celebrating a meaningful step towards a safer road and stronger connections for our children, families and wider community.”

Historic restoration underway

A PANMURE duo has fulfilled their long-awaited dream of securing a 117-year-old German howitzer cannon (scarred with bullet holes from the allied forces) to be refurbished to its former glory.

South Western District Restoration Group Inc (SWDRG) president Brian Cockayne and Panmure Action Group president Ian Wallace were beaming with excitement when announcing they had finally secured possession of the historic piece of military equipment, which was previously on display at Warrnambool’s Cannon Hill. The cannon was developed in 1909 as a fierce addition to the landscape of World War One, boasting a maximum range of 7000 metres using a 15.8-kilogram shell. The cannon is a German howitzer long barrel which was captured from German artillery in 1917 before being brought back to Australia as a war souvenir. “When the war ended in 1918, part of the armistice was that the guns must fall silent,” Mr Wallace said. “There were thousands of them in Germany and something like 500 came to Australia and New Zealand. “Two guns were allocated to Warrnambool before going on a carriage all around Victoria to promote the purchase of war bonds. “They’ve got their own history.” Mr Cockayne said the cannon had remained on public display at Cannon Hill until it was removed around 20 years ago, having been

deemed unsafe for exhibition. “A car crashed into it, which I think was from hoon driving, and it was deemed unsafe as it was rusty,” he said. “Instead of doing anything with it they put it in the old pit and it sat there for a number of years before it was found. “People were not happy about that so it was put into storage at the Warrnambool Saleyards, where it sat for around four or five years. “They tried to get people to have a crack at taking it on but nobody would because they were quoted at around $150,000 to get it back into reasonable shape. “Of course, there’s no money for that when they can’t even fix potholes.” Despite the deteriorated condition of the cannon and the estimated repair bill, Mr Cockayne and Mr Wallace pushed ahead with their attempt, with the support of Warrnambool RSL member Doug Hazelwood, Warrnambool City Council and Corangamite Shire Council. “I said we were interested so he (Mr Hazelwood) started the ball rolling with the city council,” Mr Wallace said. “We got a chance to look at the gun at the saleyards but as soon as I saw it I knew it was just too much for our little group – but it’s not too much for Brian’s group.” The Cobden-based SWDRG will tackle the arduous task of meticulously restoring the cannon over the next few years, which will draw on the talents of a diverse range of members and the pursuit of grant funding.

Panmure’s Ian Wallace and Brian Cockayne have secured a long-forgotten piece of history. “We’re going to have a crack over the next few years at rebuilding the gun carriage,” Mr Cockayne said. “Over the next month or two we’re going to take the barrel off and put it in a molasses electrolysis bath to be de-rusted. “We’re hoping to have this gun as close to operational-looking as possible, so it can be displayed out at Cobden at our World War One lone memorial tree. “We’re hoping to have around sixto-10 blokes working on it who can strip it down, get the engineering done, rivet and weld it, put the axel through and restore the elevator.

“Hopefully there’s enough local talent to be able to carry out the works needed.” The process is expected to cost around $40,000 in total, with SWDRG members giving their time to avoid the otherwise insurmountable labour costs. When finished, the goal is for the cannon to become an integral part of ANZAC Day services. “We’ll do our best and hope to have it on display but it can also be used at Anzac Day Services such as at Panmure or if the Warrnambool RSL want it back for the day,” Mr Cockayne said.

“We’re really happy to get it because you don’t get a cannon like this very often. “We’ve already got $10,000 which came with the cannon, and that will go a long way towards doing most of the work on the subframe. “Hopefully over the next two or three years we will be successful in receiving grants to fix it.” Mr Wallace said he had zero doubt the SWDRG members would be able to restore the equipment – proudly telling Mr Cockayne he expected the cannon to be making noise in a year or two.

The duo has obtained a damaged World War One German howitzer cannon, which the South Western District Restoration Group Inc will spend the next few years restoring.

The front of the cannon still had dents from bullets which allied forces had fired at the German soldiers operating the artillery.

Senator Jacinta Price and Wannon MP Dan Tehan spent the afternoon speaking with business owners in Warrnambool earlier this week.

Business concerns in the spotlight LOCAL business owners had the opportunity to air their concerns and challenges when Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price paid a visit earlier this week.

Community forum on the state of the roads Where: City Memorial Bowls Club, 50-58 Cramer St, Warrnambool When: 5:15pm September 2, 2026 Hear directly from the experts at the National Transport Research Organisation about the causes of our road issues and the solutions they recommend. Your experiences matter to me, so come along and be part of the conversation.

Our roads are in crisis State Member for South West

At the invitation of Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan, the Shadow Minister for Small Business (and for Skills and Training) took time to chat with locals during a special ‘round table’ discussion at City Memorial Bowls Club on Monday afternoon. “We discussed the Coalition’s plan to support small businesses, cut red tape and back the local businesses that keep our communities alive,” Mr Tehan said. And their plight wasn’t lost on the visiting Senator. “During our travels around Warrnambool today we’re hearing the same things over and over again; the difficulty of running a small business these days is getting greater and greater,” Senator Price said. “There is so much red tape, so much paperwork; the compliance burdens these small businesses face and the paperwork they have to deal with constantly is just making things so challenging. “Then there’s the workforce labour shortage that is a big issue across many business sectors.” The Senator believes that one of the biggest competitors for many small businesses is the government itself. “NDIS is a huge issue for many who are losing staff because they want to go out and start up a new NDIS business or something like that. “And when it comes to construction or civil construction small businesses are competing with big government projects where the conditions of pay for workers is a lot better than what small businesses can offer so effectively their staff are being dragged away from them and towards these big projects. “There’s no doubt that many small businesses are doing it tough. Some are struggling through start-up pains while others are counting the cost of skyrocketing fees, taxes and charges. “We need to help those sectors that require workers and we need to ensure that their concerns are heard and addressed.”

Next wave of artists released FOR almost 50 years like-minded music lovers and listeners have made their annual trek to the seaside town of Port Fairy for ‘the Folkie.’ Next March the festival will celebrate its golden anniversary, welcoming generations of music lovers back to the village for four days of music, fun and entertainment. The Port Fairy Folk Festival organisers have this week released another wave of artists for its 50th anniversary line-up, bringing together much-loved favourites, international stars, and emerging artists from across the globe. Announcing the first 38 artists coming to Port Fairy in March, festival program director Justin Ridge said the community was working hard to put together an amazing event to honour the milestone, as well as set the event up for the next 50 festivals. “Additions to the line-up include previous Artists of the Year, festival favourites new and old, and performers travelling to our town from all over the world,” Mr Ridge said. “As we enter our final ticketing tier we encourage all folkies, whether regular goers or those considering their first visit, to make sure they secure a ticket to what will be a very special moment in Australian music history.” Included in this week’s release of artists were America’s Alice How and Freebo, The Milk Carton Kids, Ordinary Elephant and Sixpence None the Richer; Ireland’s Eleanor McEvoy, Joshua Burnside, and Luke Bloom; England’s Kate Rusby, and artists Sue Ray, Steph Strings, John Butler, Mia Dyson and more. The Folkie will be a celebration of the deeply connected, nurturing community

The Port Fairy Folk Festival will next year celebrate its 50th birthday and organisers believe it will be even bigger and better than before. that Port Fairy is renowned for. This special event will celebrate the music lovers who have gathered in the township for five decades; the old friends returning to familiar stages, the new generations discovering the festival for the first time, and those countless songs shared ‘en masse’ in the Shebeen. With more artists still to be revealed, the 50th festival is shaping up to be one of the

biggest and most memorable yet. “For more than 30 years I’ve been involved with the Folkie and during that time I’ve seen the festival grow from a little gig on the back of a big red truck in the Botanic Gardens to a large-scale celebration that draws music fans and artists from all over the world,” festival committee president Bruce Leishman said.

“Fifty years is such a feat for our seaside village and we’re proud to be a part of this community-led event. “We thank all our sponsors, friends and family, and most of all the Port Fairy community for getting behind this great event for 50 years.” Gates will be open for the 50th Port Fairy Folk Festival at 12 noon on Friday, March 5.

Plaza turns all shades of yellow VISITORS to Gateway Plaza were greeted with splashes of yellow throughout the centre last Thursday morning. As part of the centre’s Daffodil Day celebrations, visitors were invited to purchase daffodils or muffins by a simple gold coin donation. Adding to the fun, they could also try their luck on a special spinning wheel, with prizes given away throughout the morning to anyone lucky enough to land on the star. “Daffodil Day is a wonderful way to raise funds and awareness for cancer research and support services,” centre manager Sarah Porter said. “The annual event encourages community participation through various activities, including purchasing daffodils and participating in fundraising events. “We are extremely grateful to all our tenants who added to the atmosphere of the day by dressing in yellow and joining in on the fun, along with those who generously donated, tried their luck on the wheel and purchased muffins and daffodils.” Next month the plaza will participate in Liptember, helping to raise awareness and support for women’s mental health.

Scholarship opens doors for lactation support THE Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre is strengthening local lactation support through its international board-certified lactation consultant scholarship. A new initiative, this scholarship provides financial funding and in-kind support. Eligible applicants need to be qualified health professionals meeting IBLCE eligibility requirements, must live and work in the south west and demonstrate a commitment to breastfeeding support. The scholarship winner must also commit to completing the IBCLC examination within 18 months of accepting the scholarship. This year’s successful applicant, Ashton King, was excited to combine her midwifery experience with her newfound knowledge of lactation to assist mothers in becoming the mothers they have envisioned. Going into midwifery, Ashton thought her passion would be in the birth suite, helping a woman become a mother. After becoming a mother herself, she realised that birth is only a small part. Ashton’s own breastfeeding story revealed to her that there was a lack of support and a knowledge gap when it came to breastfeeding that can often leave women confused and unable to access what can be beautiful bonding moments between a baby and mother. With three young children, amid an economic crisis and limited ability to work, this scholarship allowed Ashton to accelerate her professional development in a field she had always wanted to explore. Allowing her access to more family-friendly working hours means she can be present for women and families while balancing work and being present for her young family. The Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre hopes to continue this scholarship in coming years to help strengthen and expand support available for all breastfeeding mothers.

Once away from the grain-fed cattle on offer, the yarding was plain and very mixed in line with a typical winter offering with more than half of the yarding consisting of cows. The cow offering comprised 36% beef cows with the balance being dairy-bred. Not all regular buyers were in attendance although most were active and with good feeder competition throughout the sale. The yarding included 141 bullocks, 315 trade cattle, 621 cows and 52 grown bulls. Despite the mixed quality the market remained firm to slightly dearer for trade cattle and bullocks. Grown heifers eased by 10 to 15c largely due to quality factors while manufacturing cattle were back by around 10c/kg.

Premiers

SOUTH Warrnambool’s under 14s have brought home the 2026 Hampden League premiership flag. The Roosters put on a great display of teamwork and skill during their 3.6.24 to 2.3.15 victory over the Hamilton Kangaroos last weekend. Mortlake’s Wilsons DC Farran Oval was a sea of red and white on Sunday as supporters gathered to cheer on the Roosters, who finished the home and away rounds in third place with 12 wins and just two losses. Both sides struggled to make inroads on the scoreboard in the first half, with the Roosters heading into the main break with just 1.4.10 on the board while keeping the Kangaroos scoreless. While the second half was a relatively even affair, with both sides kicking just the two majors, the Roosters’ first half dominance was enough to get them over the line on the final siren. In what was a great team effort on Sunday, Oscar Saywell, William Kerr, Zavier Nelson, Cooper McCosh, Aaron Lougheed and Nico Savage were named best for the premiers. Goals went to Cole Burleigh, Logan Hunter and Zavier Nelson.
