Bringing smiles to young faces

WHILE Christmas for many children is a happy time filled with presents, food and family, for others it can be a time of sadness.

For children in care, Christmas may not always be a happy time – but that’s where a small, dedicated group of local volunteers with big hearts step in to fill the void.

Led by coordinator Shanika Ramanayaka, ‘Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, South West Victoria’ fills and distributes Santa sacks to children in out-of-home care.

Last year more than 600 sacks were packed and given to children in care in and around Warrnambool and this number is expected to be even higher come December.

With that in mind, volunteers across Warrnambool are now working hard collecting donations and compiling Santa sacks for children who otherwise may not receive gifts on Christmas morning – and these kind-hearted ‘elves’ need some help.

“We make and fill sacks for children up to the age of 17,” Shanika said.

“We make sure the children receive something to love, something to read, something to do and something to share.”

Members from both the Kiwanis Club of Warrnambool and the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak work together, along with other volunteers, to make this happen each year.

“It’s a joint project and one that we are all very passionate about,” Shanika said.

“Lots of community groups are also behind it and we welcome contributions big and small; we need to have the sacks finished by the end of October ready for distribution from the first week of December.”

Games, activity sets, toys, sports items, craft items (non toxic), story books and new soft toys are among the items most in need.

“Along with the Santa sacks at Christmas time, we also deliver ‘my essential’ (backpacks) packs to children in need.”

Since September 2018 more than 500 packs have been delivered to local family services.

These packs include new children’s clothing, towels, drink bottles and lunch

boxes, toiletries, school stationery and story books, sun hats and more.

“The backpack project was initiated by former Warrnambool locals Jennifer and Peter King to help children going into foster care and to help foster care families,” Shanika said.

“Often children are placed quickly into foster care without much more than what they are wearing at the time. We aim to provide them with a backpack with a few essential items to help with the transition.”

Both the backpack and Santa sack projects rely solely on donations to ensure their continuation.

Anyone wishing to make a donation towards the Santa sacks or backpacks can contact Shanika on 0450 231 601.

Ready to spread some Christmas cheer to children less fortunate across the district are Leonna Bell, Sandra Mugavin, Cheryl Bellman, Diane Riordan, Janice Burns and Shanika Ramanayaka.

Big crowd at Fire Night

A CROWD of more than 600 people rugged up and headed to Flagstaff Hill last Saturday night to enjoy the annual ‘Fire Night’ festivities.

Despite the cool conditions, people of all ages were happy to wonder the grounds of the popular tourist attraction, toast marshmallows, enjoyed food from several vendors on-site and listen to music.

Hot chocolate from the tea rooms once again proved a crowd favourite, as did the rare firing of Flagstaff Hill’s swivel gun, ‘Thunderchild.’

Cult classic returns to the stage

A TALENTED cast of students from Warrnambool College will take to the stage next week to present ‘Little Shop of Horrors.’

It has been 10 years since the college last brought this cult classic to life on stage and they are now thrilled to return with a bold new vision – and a student team that’s bursting with talent, energy and heart.

This year’s production is a sci-fi musical comedy like no other, blending hilarious characters, toe-tapping tunes, and a bloodthirsty, talking plant from outer space into one unforgettable night at the theatre.

For those unfamiliar, the show follows Seymour Krelborn, a shy florist’s assistant who discovers a strange plant during a solar eclipse.

As the plant – Audrey II – grows, so too does Seymour’s fame… and the danger around him.

What sets this production apart is the incredible student leadership and involvement powering it.

At Warrnambool College they are passionate about student voice, and this school production is one of the most exciting examples of that in action.

Students have taken the reins in pivotal roles - not just on stage, but behind the scenes as choreographers, band members

and creative leaders.

They’ve spent countless hours rehearsing, developing routines, refining harmonies and bringing the show to life with infectious enthusiasm and professionalism.

From the pit to the spotlight, students have poured their creativity into every moment of this performance.

Their resilience, teamwork, and drive have transformed ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ into something truly special – a celebration of what young people can achieve when given

the chance to lead.

Performances will be held at the Lighthouse Theatre on Friday, August 29 at 7pm, and Saturday, August 30 with both a matinee and a 7pm performance.

Tickets are available now via the Lighthouse Theatre website.

Whether you’re a musical theatre buff, a sci-fi fan, or just looking for a great night out, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ is weird, witty, and absolutely wonderful.

Don’t miss it.

Large crowds braved the cool weather and headed to Flagstaff Hill on Saturday night for another successful winter event.

Grass off limits to free campers

THE grassed area in Panmure’s free camping site will be a ‘no go zone’ until October 1 this year.

Following consultation with the Panmure Action Group, council erected signage advising the grassed areas were closed to campers from May 1 to October 1 each year.

However, despite the signage campers have continued to park on the grass.

As a result of damp ground conditions in recent weeks, there has been increased turf damage on those sites.

Bollards and locked chains have recently been installed to prevent further camping in those areas.

Council hopes to re-open the grassed areas from the start of October, pending weather conditions.

The grassed areas in Panmure, previously used for free camping, are currently closed.

WARRNAMBOOL Library will this Saturday celebrate the 80th anniversary of Children’s Book Week.

To mark the occasion the library and the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) will hosting a Birthday Book Adventure and everyone is invited.

Guests are encouraged to dress as their favourite book characters while celebrating the 2025 CBCA Book of the Year winners.

The party will be officially opened by Cr Vicki Jellie, who

Library to celebrate 80 years

will read from one of the winning books before leading the happy birthday cheer and cake cutting.

Partygoers will also have a chance to browse and buy shortlisted and winning titles thanks to Collins Booksellers.

The fun continues with Storytime and Nature Craft with local author and CBCA member Tania Moloney (Nurture in Nature), 80 cupcakes for 80 years, face painting and creative activities for the whole family.

“Children’s Book Week is always special, but this year we’re celebrating eight decades of stories that have shaped generations,” Cr Jellie said.

“It’s the perfect time to come together, dress up, celebrate Australian children’s literature and share the joy

of reading.”

In the lead-up to the big celebration, the library’s regular Storytime, Toddler Time and Baby Rhymetime sessions will take on a special Book Week twist.

Everyone is encouraged to dress as their favourite book character, and enjoy stories and songs inspired by the magic of this year’s theme: Book an Adventure.

Warrnambool Library is proud to partner with the Children’s Book Council of Australia Victorian Branch for this event.

Bookings are essential so to secure your spot visit library. warrnambool.vic.gov.au or call 5559 4990.

Birthday celebrations on the agenda

MEMBERS of the Twin Rivers Probus Club continue to enjoy regular outings and meetings and welcome new members. The club recently enjoyed a trip to the Kirkstall Hotel for lunch.

Members are now preparing to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary on Wednesday, November 26. All past and current members are welcome to attend the celebrations, which will be held at the Russell Creek Football Club rooms. A general meeting will be followed by a two-course birthday lunch, entertainment and shared memories. Anyone interested in joining the Twin Rivers Probus Club can call the secretary, Jenny, on 0412 689 775.

Well done Warrnambool, you’ve earned this!

Welcome aboard flight WWPS 365...

WARRNAMBOOL West Primary

School students were ‘flown’ to the destinations of their choice during the school’s Book Week celebrations.

School principal Karen Holdsworth said staff took students on an adventure of a lifetime.

“Staff dressed as flight crew, a pilot and an air controller and welcomed students on board flight WWPS 365,” Ms Holdsworth said.

“We gave an in-flight safety briefing and allowed passengers to use their imaginations to take them to wherever they wanted to be.”

Students went to school dressed as their favourite Book Week characters, adding plenty of colour to the schoolgrounds.

Sinead Grey, Tanya Tampion, Karen Holdsworth, Petra Lammers, Georga Whiting, Fiona Ludeman, Brianna Kavanagh, Zoe Evans, Christina White and (front) Sasha Suckling prepare to welcome ‘passengers’ on board. Allira Brown was keen to dress in character.
Indigo and Ivory Fitzpatrick enjoyed Book Week activities. Charlotte Cowley enjoys some quiet time.
Illuka Briggs-Burns dressed as Superman.
Namayah Theobald-Daly, Sieanna Cowland and Addilyn Walker-Daly were ready for action.
With her pink cowgirl hat, Jameka Flemming was ready to take on the day.

Families celebrate science

TODDLE on Hoddle families recently enjoyed some special activities to celebrate National Science Week.

More than 20 children up to the age of five and their families took part in a range of activities centred on science and technology last Tuesday.

The day was supported by playgroup coordinator and F/1 classroom teacher Renae Blake, West Warrnambool Community House coordinator Jill Bourke and Deakin University Bachelor of Social Work student Amy Primmer. Participants enjoyed science-based experiments such as ‘exploding colourful lemons’ and art with watercolours and lemon.

Every week is a fun week at Toddle on Hoddle, with many events, celebrations, culturally significant days, season and themes all celebrated throughout the year. Toddle on Hoddle is a free playgroup held at Warrnambool West Primary School (with West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House) each Tuesday of the school term from 9.30am-11am.

Challenging two days for students

ALMOST 300 students from across the district converged on Deakin University last week to take part in the Great South Coast Science and Engineering Challenge.

The annual event once again attracted participants from several schools, with students in years 9 and 10 competing in a range of activities on Monday, and students from years five and six enjoying the event on Tuesday.

Kings College continued its dominance of the ‘Challenge Day’ on Monday, finishing in first place.

Warrnambool College was awarded second place, followed by Terang College and Good Shepherd (Hamilton).

The students from Kings will now head to the state final in Ballarat on September 3 (where the winner from that day will be invited to the national final in Newcastle the following month).

Tuesday’s ‘Discovery Day’ was won by St Joseph’s Primary School (team B), followed by Merrivale Primary, St Joseph’s (team A), Kings College, Terang College and

Warrnambool East Primary.

“This was the first time we have run the Discovery Day program with year five and six students and it was a great success,” local organiser for the challenge, Brooke McLeod said.

“This year’s challenge attracted roughly 300 students over the two days and we also had 30 volunteers from nine different organisations, which was wonderful.”

Organisers are appreciative of the efforts of members of the Rotary clubs of Warrnambool, Warrnambool Central, Warrnambool East, Warrnambool Daybreak, Port Fairy and Camperdown – along with the Neil Porter Legacy and South West Tech School.

The program will return in 2026, with a tentative date of August 10 and 11.

Organisers are again looking for sponsors and industry partners that can help the program grow.

Anyone wishing to assist is urged to contact the Rotary Club of Warrnambool.

Sweet fundraiser for Let’s Talk

WARRNAMBOOL West Primary School was filled with the smell of freshly baked treats last week as the Student Congress hosted its very first bake off and bake sale.

The event was held to raise money for the Let’s Talk Foundation, which supports mental health in our local community.

Students, parents and friends rolled up their sleeves to create a delicious spread

of cakes, slices and savouries.

A big thank you to the panel of judges who had the very tough job of tasting them all.

Winners took home some amazing prizes kindly donated by local cafes. The day was filled with fun, food and community spirit, with all proceeds going to support an important cause.

Table tennis finals await

FROM minor premiers to out of the finals race, Warrnambool Vikings was defeated by Attunga in the A grade preliminary final of Orford and District Table Tennis last week.

For the first time in three years, Vikings have missed the chance to play on the last night of the season.

The grand finals of both grades will be played at the Orford Hall next Wednesday, August 27 from 7.30pm.

There will be another close encounter in B grade when Myndarra and Tarrone meet – they had a 6-5 result in the earlier final.

Neither final will lead to an early night as the standard of table tennis from all teams will see long rallies and extended rubbers.

In finals, once a team wins six rubbers play stops.

Preliminary final results:

A grade – Attunga defeated Warrnambool Vikings 6.20-3.11.

Attunga has come home flying in the last few rounds of the season and continued their form in the final.

With four of the nine rubbers extended only into the fourth game, Kelly Wortley won her three rubbers for Attunga, surviving a strong challenge from Gilles Gunderman 7-11, 11-9, 11-4 and 11-4.

Chad Ryan was best for Vikings winning two rubbers, defeating Ian Wortley 11-9, 11-2, 9-11 and 11-5, and Val Wortley 7-11, 11-8, 11-7 and 12-10.

Attunga won both doubles, contributing to their score.

B grade – Tarrone defeated Orford 6.18-3.9.

Tarrone’s David Warhurst won his three rubbers, with a close defeat of Russell Hussey 11-5, 11-13, 11-9, 5-11 and 11-0.

Tarrone also won both doubles, the first an extended rubber 11-8, 11-6, 10-12 and 13-11.

Andrea Drendel added her rubber to Tarrone’s scoreline, while Jadden Clap won a rubber for Orford, defeating Steven Young 5-11, 11-0, 14-12 and 11-4.

Try This...

How smart is your right foot?

This is hysterical. You have to try this.

It is absolutely true. I guess there are some things the brain cannot handle.

1. While sitting in a chair, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number ‘6’ in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.

I told you so! And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you’ve not already done so.

MORTLAKE MONDAY, AUG 18, 2025

SALEYARD REPORT

by MLA YARDING 1200 CHANGE 55 more

Agents yarded a total of 1121 head at Mortlake a number consistent with the previous sale.

The overall quality improved across most categories with a noticeable increase in supplementary-fed cattle particularly within the trade weight classes.

The bullock yarding was mixed featuring a few more manufacturing types although there was a distinct tail of lighter-conditioned crossbred cattle.

Approximately 70% of the cow offering comprised dairy breeds while beef cows presented with more weight and condition than seen in previous sales.

Most regular buyers were present and actively operating across the yarding which included 100 bullocks, 394 trade cattle, 581 cows and 46 grown bulls.

The market for bullocks remained firm, however the better end grainfed trade cattle softened by 10 to 15 c/kg.

There was strong and continued demand for well bred feeder steers and heifers which saw price increases

of up to 40c/kg and more in some cases. Manufacturing cattle held firm.

Heavy beef cows improved by 10 to 15c/kg while medium weight cows and dairy breeds were generally firm to 5c/kg stronger.

Very light cows gained between 10 and 30c/kg and cows returning to the paddock sold at stronger rates. Heavy grown bulls were firm to slightly dearer.

Top prices included bullocks selling to 494c/kg with better quality trade cattle ranging from 450 to 500c/kg.

Heavy beef cows made between 380 and 446c/kg while medium weights sold from 360 to 390c/kg.

Dairy cows particularly those with better coverage ranged from 340 to 396c/kg and cows returning to the paddock sold to a top of 380c/kg.

Manufacturing steers reached 395c/ kg.

Grown heifers ranged from 400 to 474c/kg and grown steers also sold to a top of 494c/kg.

Grown bulls reached up to 434c/kg.

HAMILTON~ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2025

A total of 6400 sheep and lambs were yarded at Hamilton comprising 3900 lambs down 100 from the previous week and 2500 sheep which was an additional 400 head representing an overall increase of 300 head compared to last week.

The yarding was more even and of better quality overall than the previous week’s offering.

Cold weather continues to impact the market with the better lambs being supplementary fed however, away from these lambs quality declined rapidly.

Not all regular buyers were present or active.

Prices were generally softer falling by $10 to $20/head.

Despite this, very good neat trade lambs held firm in some instances due to quality.

Trade lambs realized between 950 and 1150c/kg cwt with a pen of heavy lambs topping the sale at $388/head.

Feeder and restocker competition remained subdued.

Light lambs 12 to 16 kg sold from $70 to $162/head while

lambs weighing 18 to 22 kg made between $178 and $236/ head.

Lambs in the 22 to 26 kg range sold from $229 to $295 and Hoggets reached up to $230/head.

There was a better quality yarding of trade sheep including both crossbred and Merino types mainly in the heavy and medium weight categories.

Again, not all buyers were present or active.

The mutton market was softer with prices down $15 to $25/head and returns realizing between 550 and 720c/kg cwt.

Heavy crossbred ewes sold to a top of $290, Merino wethers reached $206 and Merino ewes with skin made $156/head.

Terminal rams sold to $162 while Merino rams with skin reached $166/head.

Roosters named in Elevate program

SOUTH Warrnambool netballers Ruby McKinley and Sophie Smith have been selected for Netball Victoria’s (NV) high performance program, ‘Elevate.’

Earlier this week NV announced the state’s top 25 netballers in both the 19 and under, and 17 and under age groups who have earnt selection in the Elevate program in preparation for the 2026 National Netball Championships.

Over the last two weeks, the top 50 in each age group have trialled and been reduced to squads of 25 who have now been invited to take part in ‘Elevate.’

This program provides athletes with targeted physical preparation before they’re again narrowed down to teams of 12 set to compete at the National Netball Championships next year.

The Victorian state teams will be announced in December.

Elevate prepares athletes with the delivery of holistic skill development, strength and conditioning and court work sessions within a controlled daily training environment, led by pathway coaches set to be announced in the coming weeks.

Ruby McKinley and Sophie Smith will be joined by fellow Hampden League representative, Piper Stephens (Camperdown).

Final round for Wolves

THE Warrnambool Wolves’ division one men’s side celebrated victory under lights last weekend.

The Wolves defeated Port Fairy Plovers 7-1.

Round 13 continued with a matchup between the Wolves and Port Fairy Plovers division two teams at Harris Street.

Entering the match, both sides were on equal win-loss points, with the winner to move into second place on the ladder.

With the scores tied 2-2 at half-time the Wolves kicked away in the second half with five goal scorers for the game, defeating the Wolves 5-3.

Round 14 this weekend will see the end of the home and away season for the Warrnambool Wolves.

The elimination and grand finals will be held in September.

Maggie named in All-Australian side

TALENTED South Warrnambool

footballer Maggie Johnstone has been named in the AllAustralian under 18 girls side.

Johnstone’s selection in the team followed her outstanding form in the 2025 national championships.

“This is a wonderful achievement by an outstanding young woman,” Brooke Brown, GWV Rebels talent operations lead said.

“Maggie is exactly what you would love out of any player moving through a

talent pathway program.

“Her dedication, desire to improve, her grit and determination once she crosses the boundary and her leadership is something Maggie should be very proud of.”

Johnstone plays an integral role in the Rebels’ under 18 squad and performed well during last Saturday’s clash against the Dandenong Stingrays.

Brisbane Lions Academy female head coach, Emma Zielke, was this week announced coach of this year’s under 18 All-Australian side.

Win for Cashin

LAST Saturday’s stableford digit day attracted a quality field to the East Framlingham Golf Club.

The A grade event was won by David Cashin on 36 points, followed by Jordan Cashin 35, Ayden Bosse 33, Greg Kelly 33 and Gerard Eccles 31.

B grade was won by Ray Eccles on 33 followed by Justin Fedley 30, Bradley White 29, Anthony Eccles 28 and Callum Henriksen 28.

Nearest the pins: super pin 3rd Neil McDonald, 6th Jordan Cashin, 7th Greg Kelly and 9th Leigh Chilton.

The social winner was John Eccles while the digit day winner was Brett Willsher on +19.

Next week will be stableford.

HAMPDEN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE AROUND THE GROUNDS

Two rounds remain

A 24 POINT win by the third-placed Koroit Saints over ladder leaders North Warrnambool sets the scene for a close Hampden League finals series.

With just two rounds of the home and away season left to play, the Eagles were handed their third loss of the season last weekend.

Playing in front of a home crowd on Saturday, the Saints were quick out of the blocks, booting home four majors in the opening term while containing the ladder leaders to 3.2.

Their dominance continued in the second, giving them a handy 20-point lead going into the half-time break.

This was extended to 31 points by three-quarter time and despite a strong final term from the Eagles, the Saints celebrated a 13.9.87 to 9.9.63 win.

Connor Byrne, William Couch and Sam Dobson had a great day out for the Saints, kicking three goals each, while Thomas Batten, Charlie James, Lachlan Wines and Luke Wines kicked two each for the Eagles.

Despite the round 16 loss, the Eagles sit 10 points clear of nearest rivals South Warrnambool, with Koroit, Warrnambool and Terang Mortlake rounding out the top five.

Round 17 this weekend will see Portland at home to the Roosters, Camperdown will host Cobden, Koroit will travel to Reid Oval to face the Blues, North Warrnambool will host the Bloods and Port Fairy will be at home to Hamilton.

Blues and Saints to contest Cup

BRAGGING rights will once again be on the line this Saturday when Warrnambool Football Netball Club takes on the Koroit Saints for the 2025 Cassign Cup.

The Cup, which originated in 2019 as a means of raising awareness and funds for Muscular Dystrophy, will be awarded to the club who takes out the most wins in all grades of football and netball this Saturday.

All players from both clubs will be encouraged to once again wear green laces to spread awareness of Muscular Dystrophy and to show their support of The Gillin Boys Foundation and its fight for a cure.

“This will no doubt once again be another great day of football and netball and we thank both clubs for their ongoing support of the Cassign Cup and our foundation,” Christopher Gillin said.

“Our foundation merchandise will be available for purchase at Reid Oval on game day and if anyone has some spare change there will be donation tins at the gate.

“The more funds we raise the quicker we find a cure.”

Since its inception six years ago, the cup has yet to be won by the Warrnambool club – with honours going to the Saints in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 204.

“The Cup wasn’t held in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID outbreak,” Christopher said.

“I’m sure Warrnambool will be keen to break the drought and take the overall win this weekend.

“We wanted everyone involved and that is why we made the winner the club that has the most wins (in both football and netball) on the day.”

KOROIT Primary School’s ‘All Stars’ basketball team has won its way through to the next round of the Hoop Time competition.

The team, comprising year four students, gave 110 per cent during their round-robin ‘Hoop Time’ competition at the ARC stadium in Warrnambool earlier this week.

The team won its way through to the grand final where they defeated St Patrick’s Koroit by two points, 1210.

Throughout the day the team played (and defeated) Woolsthorpe, two Port Fairy Consolidated teams and St Patrick’s Koroit.

Koroit Primary was well represented on the day, with 44 students playing across various divisions throughout the day.

Congratulations to Bayden, Charlie, Lawson, Jase, Davey and Patrick who will now head to the next round, which is anticipated will be held in Hamilton.

‘All Stars’ shine on court

After winning their Hoop Time grand final at the ARC last Monday, Bayden, Charlie, Lawson, Jase, Davey and Patrick have now qualified for the next round.
Christopher Gillin with the prized Cassign Cup. Warrnambool and Koroit will meet at Reid Oval tomorrow (Saturday) and the club with the most wins across all games played will take home the Cup.
