DAY WEATHER FORECAST

FOR some exciting school holiday entertainment head to Warrnambool’s Emmanuel College to see The Mik Maks.

The popular children’s entertainers will appear live on stage at the college from 11am until 11.45am on Tuesday, September 19. Youngsters will dance and sing the morning away with brothers Joel and Al McInnes, ‘Drums’ the Panda and Joel’s teenage daughter Ava who recently joined the group.

The concert is being brought to town by the Kiwanis Club of Warrnambool.

Don’t miss The Mik Maks ROAR

“We’re excited to bring The Mik Maks here and I’m sure they’ll be very popular among children and local families,” Kiwanis Club member Sandra Mugavin said.

“Children will be able to meet the group members after the show and we will also have face painting and food available.

“This is the second time we have brought them here and I’m sure the show will be amazing. We encourage everyone to purchase tickets online prior to the day.”

LIONS District 201V2 is one that is highly regarded at both national and international levels.

The district extends from the nearer western city suburbs through to the South Australian border, and as far north as Skipton, Hamilton, Horsham, Ararat, Casterton and Kaniva.

This district – which encompasses your local clubs – is well known for its continued involvement in far-reaching and community benefitting activities.

This includes health and welfare, youth and disaster response.

And the district has been well-supported by your local Lions club which has been at the forefront in many innovative and successful activities.

This includes a trip by Macarthur Lion Andrew Duyvestyn who drove a stage coach from Macarthur to Melbourne.

This coach was supported by Lions clubs along the way who raised many thousands of dollars to purchase vital equipment for The Royal Childrens Hospital.

The Port Fairy Club’s development of the instrument storage and transport of instruments (between storage and venues) at the annual folk festival has been applauded by both national and international musicians.

The club’s smoke alarm program (part of its on-going Lion Assist activity) which includes the annual check and battery replacement of up to 100 smoke alarms in the homes of elderly and infirm, was recognised at state CFA level.

Warrnambool Lions Club’s active support of the Lions Eye Health program and eye sight education and testing in local schools has certainly extended its esteem.

The detection of many potential early eye sight problems in young children and the early treatment resulting has ensured that more severe problems and even blindness will not be theirs in later life.

All local clubs have also been recognised for their response to disaster situations – fire, flood tsunami and drought.

This not only involves raising and soliciting immediate support to and for the stricken

areas and the people affected but also for their support during the recovery process.

This includes everything from clean-ups and restoring services to providing personal succour and assistance.

And then there are all those small occasions that are often thought to be some fundraising efforts by your local club, like the barbecues (sausage sizzle).

However, many of those barbecues are provided by Lions to assist other community organisations.

For example, Port Fairy recently ran barbecues for the sheep dog trials and little athletics meetings.

Macarthur is well known for its catering support to activities such as their annual Camp Draft event, Koroit Lions often man the football ground gate, not only for the football but for other local events, and is predominant in its gate keeping role at the Irish Festival.

And all has been achieved by volunteers who receive the greatest reward of all –satisfaction.

Fire Night at Flagstaff Hill

TOASTED marshmallows, cannon firing and live music will all be part of the family fun at Flagstaff Hill this weekend.

The maritime village will host its inaugural ‘Fire Night’ tomorrow (Saturday) from 5pm-10pm. The event, which is $5 for adults and free for children and members, will feature live music, food vendors, a twilight cannon firing and fires along the waterfront – with marshmallows available for toasting.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said the aim of the event was to encourage people to embrace the conditions and enjoy a unique event.

“We’ve seen with the success of the Solstice Search Party that people are willing to rug up and head out for winter events,” she said.

“It’s all about using the conditions to your advantage. The early sunset means things like a cannon firing at dusk and toasting marshmallows on a fire can all be done at a more family-friendly time.”

As well as being home to Australia’s richest collection of shipwreck artefacts, Flagstaff Hill really is a haven for kids.

With farm animals, open spaces, and a working 19th century cannon, Flagstaff Hill offers something for everyone at an affordable price.

Tickets to tomorrow night’s event will be available at the door.

Community grants now open

ROUND one of Moyne Shire Council’s 2023/24 Community Assistance Fund is now open for applications.

The well-subscribed annual program aims to build stronger communities and deliver benefits to residents and visitors through grants to communityled projects and facility improvements.

Moyne Shire mayor Karen Foster said the community assistance fund was a valuable council program and she encouraged all eligible community groups to consider applying.

“This fund helps us support even more groups in our community with their important work,” Cr Foster said.

“Up to $3000 is available for small community-based projects or activities, and up to $15,000 for larger purchases or capital works.”

Four different funding streams are available so it is important people head online to read the eligibility criteria.

One of the mandatory requirements is applicants must first speak with a council program officer before lodging their application.

Applications close on Monday, September 11.

Information on eligibility and how to apply can be found online at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/CommunityAssistance-Fund.

Repair cafe open Saturday

THE ever-popular Port Fairy Repair Café will be open for customers tomorrow (Saturday).

Each month the repair café, at the Port Fairy Community House in Railway Place, becomes a hive of activity as locals take along a variety of items in need of attention.

One of the café’s newest volunteers, Sandra, will be available to help out with any IT problems.

Sandra has been working with IT for decades, and loves to work through issues with people.

These issues may include such things as an email that won’t work on a tablet or phone, alerts that won’t stop, or not understanding

how to use a device to its full potential.

Many other ‘fixes’ will also be able to be looked at from 10am including bikes, jewellery, wooden furniture, electrical items, clothing, mechanical items and general household fixing.

Residents and visitors to the town are invited to go along and meet the friendly team, learn a new skill and give broken things a new lease on life.

The repair café at Port Fairy Community House will be open from 10am until 12 noon.

Walk-ins are most welcome or bookings can be placed on the group’s Facebook page. Repairs are offered free of charge.

School celebrates science week

WARRNAMBOOL West Primary School students were excited to embrace this year’s National Science Week theme of ‘Powering Future Industries.’

This week’s celebration of all-things science saw the school participate in a special Science Fair, organised by Heath Hackett.

The year four, five and six students also showed their coding skills by creating games for children to play on school laptops.

This included cats jumping over muffins, kicking soccer balls into the net past a goal keeper, and flying chickens who had to dodge obstacles.

Students were also given the opportunity to bring experiments from home to display in front of the school.

These included volcanic eruptions with bicarb soda, dishwashing liquid mixed with dye, an egg being sucked into a bottle without breaking, floating magnets and ‘magic milk’ with dye and washing detergent.

Three judges gave scores out of 10, with each participant receiving a certificate and ‘Smarties.’

“The students really embraced Science Week and we had a wonderful display which included oil and water coloured fish, coffee filtered markers on paper and prints from vinegar, baking soda and dye,” visual arts specialist Renae Blake said.

“It was an amazing fair.”

Fundraiser at Capitol Cinema

MOVIE goers will also have the opportunity to help raise funds for a great local cause next week.

Students from Warrnambool College’s Childers House are hoping to raise much needed funds for the Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Network (WCLN) by hosting a screening of the new Barbie movie at the Capitol Cinema next Friday, August 25.

Each house at the college holds an on-site and off-site event every year to raise funds for their charities.

Childers House has chosen to support WCLN as its local philanthropic organisation.

Arwen Bounds, captain of Childers House at Warrnambool College, is passionate about the natural environment and is thrilled her leadership group chose WCLN.

“We are inviting the public to support a future where young people like us can live in a beautiful, healthy, natural environment where plants, animals and humans all thrive,” Ms Bounds said.

The evening starts at 6pm for drinks and nibbles and includes a brief talk from a WCLN representative at 6.30pm, followed by the movie at 7pm.

Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased from Warrnambool College front reception or at the cinema on the night.

Bargains at the shed

BARGAIN hunters and those who enjoy giving back to the community should head to the ‘furniture shed’ at Koroit tomorrow (Saturday).

The Koroit Lions Club’s shed is well stocked with a great range of secondhand furniture, with all proceeds going back into the community to help those in need.

With everything from tables and chairs and a range of other household furniture, the shed is a bargain hunters dream.

With local football scheduled for Koroit this weekend, entry to the shed will be via King Street.

WCLN has been running successful community environment programs for decades.

Volunteers have revegetated the dunes around Lady Bay, discovered native animals which were thought to be locally extinct, protected the amazing Little Penguins and Short Tail Shearwaters on Middle Island and work with farmers to help them improve biodiversity and sequester carbon in the soil.

The decision to desex

THE decision of whether or not to de-sex your pet is a big one, as this will no doubt be the most significant surgical procedure they will have if they live a healthy and event free life.

While pets can be desexed at any age, including during their more mature years, it can be done as early as six weeks of age - but most pets are done between five and six months of age.

Veterinarians recommend desexing to prevent unwanted pregnancies in females.

This is especially important for cats as it is not always possible to tell when she is 'on call.'

In female dogs, desexing automatically stops their cycles and the associated bleeding and attention from male dogs. Castration can also help to control male dominance aggression problems and also reduces their wandering instincts if a female dog in the neighbourhood is on heat.

Tomcats have a tendency to roam and fight with other cats which can lead to other medical implications such as cat bite abscesses and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus).

Spaying can also reduce the risk of mammary tumours (which can be life threatening) while castration reduces the risk of prostatic disease, perianal tumours and testicular cancers.

Desexing may also be recommended in your pet to prevent hereditary diseases being passed on or for treatment of some diseases such as prostatic hypertrophy or pyometra.

There are also several behavioural problems (some of which can have medical implications) that may be helped by desexing.

These include:

Dogs - helps to control male dominance aggression problems; reduces the instinct to wander and seek female partners for male dogs; reduces male territorial marking.

Cats - reduces a tomcat's tendency to roam; reduces a tomcat's tendency to spray and mark; desexed male cats are less likely to fight which reduces the likelihood of cat bite infections.

For further information on desexing your pet, contact your local vet clinic.

Keep your pets warm

WITH the cold weather now here, fires are lit and some extra layers of clothing are added when dressing each morning.

While we make sure we dress appropriately for the change in temperature, so too should we remember that our pets may also feel the cold and may need some extra attention.

While your furry friends may have a ‘built-in coat’ it’s still a good idea to be mindful of how you can keep them as warm and as comfortable as possible.

The cold can be lethal to some pets due to the risk of hypothermia developing after exposure to extremely low temperatures and/or wind and rain.

To keep your pets safe (and warm) in cold weather there are a few things we should consider before leaving home.

Allow your pet to be in your house or garage in severe weather; bring your pets inside during the cold of winter if possible.

Provide more food to outdoor pets in cold weather.

If your pets are in a chilly environment through winter, they may need more calories to maintain their core body temperature – so keep an eye on their food intake.

Just like in the warmer months, pets also need access to clean drinking water in the colder temperatures.

Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure they have access to non-icy drinking water.

Before heading out in the car, check under your vehicle.

Due to their smaller body sizes, pets aren’t able to generate heat as well as their owners so they may find your car to be a warm and inviting spot to cuddle out of the wind.

This could include under the hood, on top of the wheels and in other tight spots.

Always check your pets’ whereabouts before starting your engine.

THE August meeting of the Warrnambool Floral Art group brought some wonderful creations.

The ladies showed off their talents with creations using just one flower.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, September 4 from 7.30pm at Our Lady Help of Christians in Selby Road, East Warrnambool.

For details contact Judith on 0419 382 465.

Brigades warn of soot danger

FIRE brigades across the western district are reminding all homeowners to prioritise cleaning their chimneys this winter to help prevent a fire.

A chimney fire in a house just outside Beaufort late last month was a timely reminder to all home owners of the importance of cleaning their flues.

The flue at that home was 95 per cent blocked by soot, which led to a significant build-up of black tar – which evidently caused the blockage and a fire to ignite.

So far this year brigades across the state have responded to 48 chimney fires.

Residents are urged to use a torch to regularly check for soot build-up or obstructions to reduce the risk of a fire starting from a fireplace or wood heater.

Recent statistics show most fatal fires start in sleeping and living areas so, for best protection, smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, living and hallway area.

Maintaining a working fireplace is essential for home safety.

A fire screen should always be used in front of an open fire and wood, clothes and other combustibles should be kept at least one metre from the fire.

Award-winning photographer

YOUNG local photographer Curtis Finch has won the ‘Win in Winter’ photo competition. The Warrnambool City Council staged the competition to help showcase how special Warrnambool is in winter, with participants encouraged to visit a local attraction, event, business or iconic location, take a photo and enter it online. After over 150 entries, the judging panel had the difficult task of choosing five finalists, with a public vote determining the winner.

Curtis Finch’s action shot of a Hampden League clash between South Warrnambool and Warrnambool at Friendly Societies Park was the most popular pick, with Curtis winning $1000 in gift vouchers to a mix of locally owned and operated businesses of his

choice.

He chose to receive his vouchers from Friends Of, Pitstop Menswear, Taylor’s Surfodesy and Bojangles.

The 16 year old Warrnambool College student has been shooting for about a year, and said he enjoys attending local footy games with his camera in tow.

“I love winter in Warrnambool because no matter the weather, rain, hail, or shine, sport still continues meaning muddy, exciting games of footy which makes amazing photo opportunities just like this one,” he said.

Mayor Debbie Arnott congratulated Curtis, and thanked all entrants for taking part.

“To have such a keen eye for detail so early in a photographic career, I can’t wait to see more stunning

local shots from Curtis in the future,” she said. “Curtis’ shot of a local footy game, along with the photos from the other finalists including a whale, fishing, kayaking on the Merri and the mighty Hopkins Falls are all excellent examples of some of the things that make our part of the world special in winter. “While our peak season is in summer, there’s a lot to love about Warrnambool throughout the year, and with over 150 entries in the Win in Winter photo competition, it looks like there are plenty of people who agree.”

Jennifer Monk’s photo of a kayak on the Merri River received the second-most votes, scoring her $500 in vouchers while finalists Robin Sharrock, Adele Griffin and Wendy Alderman earned $250 in vouchers each.

Vision for the future

WARRNAMBOOL Lions Club members are working hard to ensure a clearer future for local children.

Through the Warrnambool Lions Eye Health Program, the club offers free eye tests to primary school aged children across the district – providing a vital link between families and the health profession.

The club is excited to be involved in this community-based education program which allows trained club members to promote healthy vision and raise awareness of the causes of preventable vision loss.

Currently, one in five children have an undetected vision problem yet most children accept vision problems and adapt

very rarely complaining as they believe everyone sees the world just like they do.

Vision disorders can have a profound effect on a child’s growth and development, with up to 80 per cent of a child’s learning occurring through their eyes.

Once detected, most eye conditions in children can be easily corrected.

Through the Lions club program, children can have a picture of their eyes taken with a spot vision screener (a state-of-the-art

portable camera).

The camera can detect any vision issues associated with myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (far sightedness), astigmatism (blurred vision), anisometropia (unequal refractive power), binocular vision (eye misalignment) and anisocoria (unequal pupil size).

Visual acuity determines how sharp vision is at longer distances while colour vision determines if the child perceives colour as most people do.

Stereo depth perception can assess the binocular function of the eyes at near tasks.

Each set of tests only takes a few minutes to complete, so disruption to class is minimal.

Personalised letters are written and addressed to the relevant parent/guardian and within each letter the results of the screening are identified, highlighting any areas of concern that should be referred to an optometrist for further examination if required.

All screeners are Lions volunteers who have successfully completed a training and accreditation process.

A working with children check is mandated.

MORTLAKE

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by MLA’s

YARDING

822 CHANGE 371 less

Mortlake agents yarded 825 cattle this week a decrease of 370 on the previous weeks offering. All on offer were showing the effects of the winter season again with a good lead and an extended tail in the trade cattle. The cow offering also provided a good lead for both dairy and beef types with all weights and grades covered along with a number of manufacturing types. Feeder interest was sound with most beef breeds and trade cattle purchased by feeder operators. Most regular buyers were in attendance and some were not operating to full capacity on 260 grown cattle, 360 trade types and 285 cows. 24 grown bulls were also penned.

With the exception of some well finished grain fed cattle, the market for grown and trade weights along with manufacturing types was softer by some 10 to 15c/ kg. Most cows lost 20 to 25c/kg with the middle weights being least effective. Trade steers and heifers sold from 270c to 340c/ kg with grown cattle topping at 285c/kg. Manufacturing steers sold from 178 to 245c/kg. The lead beef cows sold from 210 to 242c with the medium weights 160c to 193c/kg. Dairy cows were generally selling between 170 and 240c/kg with grown beef bulls to 235c/kg.

Orford dominates the tables

ORFORD players dominated the tables at last weekend’s twoday Minor League tournament in Warrnambool.

Teams from Colac, Terang, Orford and Portland competed in the tournament.

The event saw some great games played and no doubt there were a few sore, tired but happy players fronting up to work this week – and more table tennis at various locations.

President Colin Venn noted in his presentation speech that Orford had “raised the bar that other associations had to rise to or it could be Orford versus The All Stars next year.”

Orford Association president David Rowbottom thanked all his players for putting their hands up to play for the weekend, making it easy to field five teams from the nine-team pennant competition the association runs over winter.

The extra A grade team that filled the void left by Terang allowed extra players to enjoy the high standard of table tennis, playing with and against other players. This was the third time an association had dominated all grades and the second time Orford has won all grades since being accepted into the tournament in the late 1990s when Camperdown couldn’t field a team in A grade.

Since then Orford has gradually added grades and now competes in all levels.

Over the years numerous Orford players’ names have adorned the aggregate

trophies and this year all were won by Orford players and in some cases returning to Orford players for a second consecutive year.

Players also used the weekend as a good hit out before starting the finals on Wednesday night.

Congratulations to all players who contested the various grades last weekend.

Results were as follows:

A grade Winners – Orford A: Aaron Rowbottom, Gordon Gunn and Rebecca Cain.

Aggregate: Aaron Rowbottom

This is the fifth time that Aaron Rowbottom has won the Finlay Lucas Aggregate Trophy, being undefeated for the weekend. Both Gordon Gunn and Jason Smith were equal second after losing a rubber.

Aaron is still behind the record of Finlay Lucas (eight times) but has time on his side to equal or pass.

Orford B- Sarah Lazzaro, Darren Smith, Joey Sinnott and Daryl Dyson.

B Grade Winners – Orford: Roger Learmonth, Peter Owen and David Warhurst. Aggregate: David Warhurst.

This is the first time David Warhurst has won the aggregate trophy and is a highlight from a 40 plus year table tennis career.

C Grade Winners – Orford: Gordon Gray, Ian Wortley and David Rowbottom. Aggregate: Gordon Gray.

Proving you are never too old, 75-year old Gordon Gray scooped the pool in this grade using his 65yrs of table tennis experience to outlast his opponents. Gordon has played longer than some of his opposition has walked.

D grade

Winners – Orford: Tony Storer, Gareth Spring, Kelly Wortley and Norbet Kraft.

Aggregate: Kelly Wortley and Tony Storer.

In her first year of playing pennant with the Orford Association Kelly Wortley joined veteran Tony Storer as joint aggregate winners.

Tony commented that the score sheets may have indicated easy wins to Orford over the weekend but when you have a large number of rubbers going to four or five games each match, the wins aren’t as

easy as the scoreboard says.

In the Saturday afternoon championships the majority of Orford players didn’t take part as they returned to their farming duties.

A grade

Singles champ Jason Smith (Portland), runner-up Gordon Gunn.

Doubles champ Jason Smith and Gordon Gunn.

B grade

Singles champ Andrew Deroon (Terang), runner-up Darren Johns from Colac; doubles champ Adrian Lane and Darren Johns from Colac.

C grade

Singles champ Gordon Gray, runner-up Tim Hol (Portland). Doubles champ Warren Williamson from Colac and Gordon Gray.

Tight race to finals

WITH just two rounds remaining, the Hampden League top five is all but settled.

South Warrnambool is sitting a comfortable two games clear of its nearest rivals, Koroit, and should be confident of finishing the home and away rounds as minor premiers.

They will wind up their home and away season with games against Cobden and Portland.

However, the finishing positions of the remaining four are yet to be finalised, with only a game separating second to fifth.

The second-placed Saints will face fifth-side Terang Mortlake this weekend before a final round clash with North Warrnambool (currently sitting third).

North Warrnambool handed the Roosters their third loss of the season last weekend, gaining the Eagles valuable points on the leaderboard.

Playing at Friendlies on Saturday, the Eagles came from behind in the third term and took their momentum into the final quarter to run home four-point victors.

In what was a low-scoring affair, the Roosters went into the main break with a 12-point lead, however, the Eagles put the foot down in the third, adding a valuable two goals three while keeping

THE final

the Roosters to just a point.

The third quarter proved the winning one for the Eagles, who finished with a marginal victory, 6.13.49 to 6.9.45.

Best for the Eagles were Jarryd Lewis, Benjamin Mugavin, Charlie McKinnon, Jackson Grundy, Jett Bermingham and Callum Grundy.

Bermingham booted two goals for the day and was well supported on the board by team-mates Jackson Grundy, Dylan Parish, Fletcher Timms and Adam Wines who each contributed a goal.

For the Roosters, Ricky Henderson kicked three, Will White two and Ollie Bridgewater contributed one.

Best for the side were Isaac Thomas, Luamon Lual, Daniel Nicholson, Ricky Henderson, Ollie Bridgewater and Jeremy Mugavin.

In other round 16 Hampden League games, Cobden defeated Port Fairy, Camperdown had a win over Portland, Koroit took the points over Hamilton and Terang Mortlake were 20-point winners over the Blues.

Round 17 tomorrow will see Hamilton and Camperdown meet at Dunkeld, Koroit will host the Bloods, Warrnambool will be home to North, Cobden will travel to Friendlies to meet South while Port Fairy will host Portland.

Big wins at the top

of

and away season saw some big wins to the top sides.

The undefeated minor premiers Merrivale capped off a dominating season with a 182-point win over Russells Creek, while second-placed Nirranda posted a 187-point win over Old Collegians.

Panmure’s home and away season also finished on a high with the thirdplaced Bulldogs defeating Timboon by 104 points.

The district’s minor premiers, Merrivale, finished on a high in front of their home crowd, defeating Russells Creek 31.24.210 to 4.4.28.

Star Tiger Dylan Weir was named in the best for his side after a huge day in front of the posts, booting home 13 majors, while Hamish Gurry added six to the board and Nathan Krepp three.

Other goal kickers for the Tigers were Jayden Brooks and Jalen Porter with two each and singles from Bradley Bell, Angus Campbell, Sam Gleeson, Jack Neave and Manny Sandow.

Brooks, Jack Gleeson and Henry Owen were also named among the best.

For Russells Creek, Logan McLeod, Thomas Smith, Caleb Templeton, Dakin Morris, Sam Alberts and Patrick Brady worked hard all day while Seamus Brady, McLeod, Smith and Templeton each kicked a goal.

At the end of the home and away season, the top five were Merrivale, Nirranda, Panmure, Kolora Noorat and Russells Creek.

In the reserves, ladder leaders South Rovers finished a game clear of Merrivale in second, followed by Panmure, Russells Creek and Nirranda.

Mortlake’s DC Farran Oval will host tomorrow’s qualifying final which will see Merrivale take on Panmure in the reserves match from 12.40pm before Nirranda and Panmure face off in the seniors from 2.20pm

Vikings take A grade

DESPITE the television coverage of the Matildas’ soccer game, there was a good group of supporters at the Orford Hall on Wednesday night to support teams in the grand finals.

The top table saw some fast, hard-hitting games while at the other end of the hall a more sedate pace saw the B grade match progress.

Congratulations to both winning teams.

In the A grade final, Warrnambool Vikings defeated Warrnambool Warriors 6.21-2.9.

Going into the first doubles, Vikings were 2-1 up.

Peter Owen (Warrnambool Warriors) defeated Warrnambool Vikings’ Dom in a four-game rubber 114, 11-13, 11-5 and 11-3.

Vikings won the doubles in regulation three games, 3-1.

The second round of singles started with two nailbiting five game rubbers.

Vikings’ Tess defeated Warriors’ Neil Ford in a highclass rubber with low flying hard hitting rallies, 11-7,

7-11, 9-11, 11-8 and 11-3.

Warriors’ Peter defeated Vikings’ Rehan in a fivegame rubber. Balls were flying in long rallies, with tactics employed by both players.

The high-class rubber finished in the fifth with Rehan unfortunately timing a serve, hitting the table end.

Peter won 11-9, 5-11, 11-8, 10-12 and 11-5.

After the fast rallies in the previous rubbers, Dom and Marshall Worthington played a gentler game, Dom winning in three.

The Vikings were 5-2 going into the second doubles.

Even though Peter and Marshall moved Rehan and Gillies across the back of the table and played some very good winning shots, they were unable to tip the match their way going down in a hard-fought close rubber 11-7, 8-11, 12-10 and 12-10.

Peter was Warrnambool Warriors’ winner while Tess was Warrnambool Vikings’ best with two rubbers, winning both of the doubles rounded out Vikings winning score.

In B grade Myndarra defeated Tarrone 6.18-2.7. Myndarra lost only one singles and the first doubles on their way to victory.

The Myndarra youngsters held their nerve, with Nick Bartlett defeating Tarrone’s Andrew McGrath while Ally Rowbottom defeated both Andrew and Steven Young. David Warhurst was Tarrone’s only singles winner, combining with Andrew to defeat Ally and Jensen Rowbottom in the first doubles.

Jensen teamed with Aaron to win the second doubles against Tarrone’s David Warhurst and Steven Young 11-1, 11-5, 8-11 and 11-6 (the only extended rubber of the night).

Aaron also won his two singles.

Ally Rowbottom rounded out a successful month with this win after she represented Warrnambool Association in its junior team, winning their section of the O’Donahue Shield a fortnight ago.

A reminder that presentation night will be held on Wednesday August 30 from 6.30pm at the Warrnambool Football Club in Cramer Street. All past and present players are welcome to attend.
