Mayor appointed to panel

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Karen Foster has been appointed to a state government panel which provides advice directly to the Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne.

Cr Foster is one of 13 mayors from across the state to be selected for the Mayoral Advisory Panel which met for the first time last Tuesday.

Cr Foster said it was an honour to be appointed to the panel and she looked forward to working closely with the Minister and learning from the other mayors selected.

“The role of the panel is to provide advice directly to the Minister on legislative, regulatory strategic and policy relating to local government,” she said.

“This will provide a unique chance to highlight the opportunities and the challenges the local government sector is facing directly with the Minister.

“I am thrilled to be one of 13 mayors selected for the panel and will use the opportunity to raise critical issues our community is facing, while driving solutions and building important relationships with the other mayors and the Minister.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

The WarrnamboolWeekly is a member of the Regional Media Connect.

As we approach the Easter long weekend, with an expected influx of tourists driving to our beautiful regions, I want to remind Victorians to be mindful of the poor state of our road network.

Since 2020-21, the Andrews Labor Government has cut the annual road asset maintenance budget by over $230 million, and the impact is clear as day to all of us who live and work in regional Victoria.

Potholes, crumbling edges, and uneven surfaces are now commonplace, making travel unsafe for locals and tourists, but also add to the worries of the truck drivers who transport our essential supplies.

Putting up a rough surface sign and dropping speed limits isn’t good enough, yet all too often appears to be the solution from our city-centric Labor Government.

Tragically, we’ve already had 86 road fatalities in just the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 32 per cent on this time last year.

For the sake of those 86 people, their family and friends, and all regional road users, the Andrews Labor Government must take some responsibility and ensure that our roads are safe and wellmaintained.

In the upcoming May State Budget, The Nationals are calling on the Andrews Labor Government to immediately provide increased and ongoing funding

for both state and locally managed roads.

The Nationals announced a policy ahead of the November state election of $1 billion dollars every year for 10 years and the return of the successful Country Roads and Bridges Program.

I challenge the Andrews Labor Government to match it.

Anything less will only lead to further deterioration of our road network and risk more Victorian lives.

In the meantime, whatever you are doing this long weekend – please be patient, drive safe and watch out for the potholes!

Nasho Fair Go fight continues

SOUTH West Victorians are behind a high-profile fight to provide equal access to support for national servicemen who have fallen through the cracks.

The group Nasho Fair Go was launched in 2022 to lobby for recognition and medical support for those who did not serve in a war zone but were conscripted to national service after 1965.

The initiative is led by south west exports including president Geoff Parkes from Naroghid and vice president Ross Murrihy from Camperdown.

Their advocacy centres around the eligibility requirements of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) Gold Card, which covers the treatment of all medical conditions and provides access to a wide range of services and support for Australian veterans.

The Menzies Liberal Government introduced National Service in 1964 to bolster Army numbers due to the rise of conflicts in south east Asia.

Around 870,000 young men registered for national service, affectionately known as Nashos, with 63,375 conscripted between 1965 and 1972 – of which 642 would die from various causes, including 210 in Vietnam.

Of the Nashos only 15,100 who served in Vietnam would go on to be eligible to receive a DVA Gold Card at age 70.

However, around 48,000 members conscripted to National Service were deemed ineligible despite serving their nation, both domestically and overseas, due to not serving in a specific operational area (war zone), during specific periods of operation.

An estimated 31,000 of those ineligible men remain today, enduring the physical and mental scars of their conscription, and feeling they have fallen though the bureaucratic cracks as their benefits are short-changed in the name of government savings.

For Mr Parkes, he feels the imbalance in support based on if the Nashos were conscripted to an active war zone or not was an injustice.

“We are the only men in Australian history who have been forced in to military service in peace time – the Vietnam War was never a declared war which Australia was in,” he said.

“Men had to spend years of their lives to fulfil their obligations, and it ruined a lot of lives.

“We’ve got the Prime Minister standing in Parliament delivering a big, emotional speech about the guys who went to Vietnam.

“But Cobden boy Graham Parlour spent 15 months in Malaysia and was shot at; Ross Murrihy, whose dad was the barber in Camperdown, spent 15 months in Malaysia

and was shot at; I’m a Naroghid guy who spent time in New Guinea; Peter Gannon from Camperdown fell off a chopper two weeks before being sent to Vietnam has struggled with back surgeries ever since –we didn’t go to Vietnam, but it impacted our lives greatly.”

Mr Parkes said many members have struggled since leaving the army, acknowledging his own life had been “turned upside down”.

“My job of three years disappeared when I got out and I was told I would need to move to Canberra to get it back,” he said.

“My girlfriend had gone, I was without my friendship group, and I went off to Canberra but quickly became an alcoholic.

“The depression and the sadness of being out of my comfort zone, being out of the army, I was just cast outside like ‘Bugger off’ and we got no help whatsoever to get back in to civilian life.

“While we understand the terrible things that happened to the blokes sent to Vietnam, it doesn’t mean Nashos who did not go had it easy.”

Mr Parkes said a recent survey among members highlighted 20 per cent of Nashos Fair Go members had battled depression, 21 per cent suffered from anxiety and 70 per cent had a medical ailment attributed to their time in the army.

“Despite that we’ve not got a single bloody cracker; nothing,” he said.

“The only thing we got was a DVA white card, which everyone who served even one day in the defence force gets.

“The medical and psychological wellbeing of those conscripts who did not serve in Vietnam or a declared operational area has been neglected by successive governments.

“We are concerned that our plight is not being taken seriously and we urge the government to address this matter with generosity of spirit, compassion and an understanding of the long-term impact that being conscripted during the Vietnam conflict had on all those who served.”

Mr Parkes said he had travelled to Canberra to meet with Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel Matt Keogh and presented him with a 25,000-signature supporting the movement.

“We’ve gone up and down the country banging the drum, but the only positive indication we’ve had is the Minister has heard what we’ve said and may get some of what we want but won’t get a DVA Gold Card,” he said.

“In a nutshell, that’s where we’re at, but we don’t accept that and we’re not just going away quietly.

“It ain’t over until it’s over, as the baseball great Yogi Berra once uttered.

“We just want some sort of compensation that at least two years of our lives were taken, and some kind of acknowledgement that we too served our country.”

Seeking recognition: South west exports Peter Gannon and Geoff Parkes are among those leading a national movement in the hopes of gaining benefits for the national conscripts (Nashos) who served their country. 2023E

Landcare grants

MORE than $4 million in grants is on offer to help volunteers and the next generation of Victorians in caring for the state’s environment and biodiversity.

Minister for Environment Ingrid Stitt announced the opening of two rounds of grants – the 2023 Victorian Landcare Grants and the 2023 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants.

Through the Victorian Landcare Grants, environmental volunteer groups can apply for up to $20,000 for on-ground works and community education projects that protect or improve the natural environment, including native vegetation and wildlife, waterways and soils.

Grants of up to $500 are also available to help with group and network administration and running costs.

The Victorian Landcare Grants are open to environmental volunteer groups, including Landcare groups and networks, Friends groups, Conservation Management Networks, Committees of Management, Coastcare groups ad Aboriginal groups, to support their work in helping protect the health of Victoria’s natural environment.

Ms Still said Victoria has a wide range of important and valuable natural environments.

“We’re proud to support the community in working together to ensure they’re maintained for future generations,” she said.

“These programs are important in getting the community, and especially young Victorians, involved in protecting the environment.

“These grants will help achieve targets set in Protecting Victoria’s Environment – Biodiversity 2037, the Victorian Government’s 20-year plan to stop the decline of our native plants and animals and improve our natural environment.”

More than 200 projects were funded through last year’s grants, including rehabilitation of wetland near Anglesea, monitoring and maintenance of nest boxes for sugar gliders and brushtailed phascogales and the planting of thousands of Indigenous plants in East Gippsland.

Local childcare centres, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, Scouts and youth groups can apply for grants of up to $5000.

Cheaper fares raise questions

THE introduction of cheap regional fares on V/Line services began last week after the State Government slashed prices to metropolitan levels, but a south west MP has slammed the cuts as unaffordable.

The cost of a daily ticket on the entire regional Victorian network has now been capped at the same price as metropolitan daily fares – currently $9.20 for a full fare or $4.60 for a concession.

On a weekend or public holiday, daily fares are capped at $6.70 and $3.35 for concession.

The cap formed a key election commitment for Daniel Andrews’ re-election bid, vowing savings for regional Victorians while driving tourism to the regions.

The cap also offered families living in rural and regional Victoria more affordable access to visiting loved ones and health and education services in other regional cities and in Melbourne.

For those who take long-distance V/Line journeys, the regional fare cap can save people more than $40 for each and every one-way journey on the regional public transport network.

“We’re delivering for all Victorians - making public transport more affordable and accessible to passengers in every corner of our state to ensure they can get to

where they need to go,” Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll said.

“The regional fare cap will transform the way Victorians travel – and will also provide a huge benefit to regional tourism and businesses.”

But the opposition has hit out at the changes, citing a Parliamentary Budget Office report which revealed the policy would cost $358.1 million over the next four years, creating a $155 million shortfall.

Shadow Minister for Public Transport Richard Riordan, the member for Polwarth, said the prices cut would be a financial failure which contributes to growing government debt.

“Labor’s financial failure means it can’t afford to keep fares low in the long term,” he said.

“People from every corner of our state deserve cheaper fares and better services to get to important appointments, events or to see friends and family.

“Eight years of mismanagement and incompetence means that important services could be at risk. What services will be cut or when will V/Line fares be increased again?

“Labor is still yet to answer one simple question; how does it intend to deliver cheaper fares indefinitely without raising taxes or cutting jobs to make up the billion-dollar shortfall?”

“Resilient” Garvoc raises quarter million

GARVOC may only be a town boasting a population around 250, but there are over a quarter of a million reasons why it is the state’s most generous community.

Garvoc has officially surpassed $250,000 in donations for the annual Good Friday Appeal, even with decades of donations not counting towards the total.

The bulk of the funds have been raised through the annual Garvoc Community Goods and Services Auction, which was once again held over the weekend with 121 items up for grabs in support of the Good Friday Appeal.

Good Friday Appeal Garvoc area manager Cate Kelly said

“We had face panting for the kids, an Easter egg hunt and the Garvoc Country Fire Authority brigade cooking on the barbecue.

“It was a great day and a wellattended event.”

As Western District Newspapers reported last year, Garvoc broke its own record in 2022 with the annual auction raising an astonishing $26,665.

For comparison, regional and rural Victoria in total raised just shy of $2.6 million for the appeal in 2022.

While every dollar is crucial, Garvoc proves itself each year to be a community punching well above its weight. But it has only been since 2013 the community has officially been

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

From the Mayor:

You might have seen some action at the Southcombe Caravan Park, up behind the Lodge building.

The rst of ve new deluxe cabins have been installed in the park and more are expected on site over the coming weeks.

These new cabins will offer a new style of accommodation in our park and will feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms, living spaces and kitchens. For an added touch of luxury they also feature log re inspired heating and two will feature a bathtub on the front deck to have a soak and take in the views.

Animal registrations now due:

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

It’s a really exciting project and the cabins will be ready for guests mid-year.

They have been placed on an area that was previously used for campsites and parking, so no vegetation has been removed and the space will be signi cantly improved with new plantings and landscaping.

At our March council meeting Councillors adopted planning scheme amendment C69 and voted to send it to the Minister for Planning for her approval. This amendment lays out areas for growth in Port Fairy over the next few decades and could unlock up to 700 new housing lots in designated growth areas. This piece of work began in 2013 and has been through extensive community consultation along the way so it’s great to see it progressing to the next step.

I thank the community for their input and council staff for their efforts in this major piece of work.

We also implemented a code of conduct for our Windfarm Community Engagement committees. These committees are a unique initiative of Moyne and bring together community Members and wind farm developers to share information. Each is chaired by a Councillor and community members nominate to be a part of the committee.

We want these committees to be a respectful and meaningful way of sharing information, so the code of conduct lays out the way we expect people to engage in the committee’s meetings. Council staff and Councillors who sit on the committee are of course already bound by Moyne Shire’s codes of conducts.

I hope you have a fantastic Easter Break and if you are travelling, please stay safe and enjoy some time with family and friends.

Don’t forget, your animal registrations are due on Monday 10 April 2023. Ensure your furry friend is properly registered and their details are up to date. There are three ways to renew your registration; over the phone with one of our customer service representatives, in person at our of ces in Port Fairy and Mortlake or via BPAY - instructions on how to do this can be found in the reminder letter sent to all current registrations.

If you would like to register a new animal, head to www.moyne.vic.gov.au/animals

Keeping your animals registration up to date with the correct information will help us to return them if they get lost.

Need to bring something to our attention –there’s an easy way to do that:

Our crews do a fantastic job staying on top of things across the shire – but with more than 5000 square kilometres to cover, sometimes we need the community’s help.

If you spot something you think we need to attend to – the best way to let us know is to get in contact with us directly – there’s three simple ways you can do that!

 Call 1300 656 564 during business hours to speak to one of our friendly customer service team

 Head online and lodge a customer request via www.moyne.vic.gov.au/ServiceRequest

 Or email moyne@moyne.vic.gov.au

If it’s after hours or a public holiday and you see something we need to get to urgently – like a tree over a council managed road, damage to one of our public facilities or a stray animal, you can contact us on 1300 656 564 and follow the prompts to be connected to an on-call staff member.

Please note Council of cers aren’t able to assist with issues on state controlled roads like highways and other main roads, this includes wandering livestock on these roads. You can call Regional Roads Victoria to report issues on 133 778.

We are also not able to assist with sick or injured wildlife – you can call Wildlife Victoria on 8400 7300 to make a report.

Keep your heart health in-check

EVERY 30 minutes, one Australian loses their life to heart disease.

This frightening statistic is enough to jump-start us all into thinking about our heart health.

It takes 30 minutes or less to conduct a heart health check and just three simple steps to help keep our hearts healthy.

Heart Week is Australia’s national heart health awareness campaign held in the first week of May each year.

It provides an opportunity for health professionals and the Australian public to start a conversation about heart health and take positive steps to reduce heart disease risk.

For this year’s Heart Week, all Australians

are being encouraged to do three simple things to look after their heart – check their blood pressure, use the Heart Age Calculator to understand their risk of heart disease, and book a Heart Health Check with their GP.

For more specialised treatment and advice, the Jayne Graves and her team at Otway Heart Cardiology Services can help.

With a clinic in the heart of Port Fairy, Otway Heart can perform a wide range of specialised tests including ECG, stress echocardiogram and 24-hour heart rate monitor tests.

Cultural burning to heighten safety

TRADITIONAL Owners in the south west are being supported to conduct cultural burning on Country as part of ongoing work towards Aboriginal self-determination.

Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation will each receive a grant as part of the Cultural Fire Grants. State-wide, 10 projects will be funded by the $6.3 million program, assisting Traditional Owners to conduct cultural burns across the Victorian landscape. The grant program supports Aboriginal Victorians to care for Country, investing in projects that promote selfdetermination through land management and enhance cultural and environmental values on Country.

Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation general manager cultural landscapes John Clarke said the push to reinvigorate cultural burning practices would have farreaching benefits for the state.

“Eastern Maar has identified prime Warrian (bandicoot) habitat as our focus for returning fire to the landscape,” he said.

“The return of Maar Biocultural objectives into landscape management will have benefits for all Victorians as we return to the conservation model influenced by and developed for the local landscape.”

Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation executive manager programs Jane Walker said it was exciting to “continue restoring weeyn yakeen (fire dreaming) back in to the landscape”.

“This project is about enabling Gunditjmara Traditional Owners to heal Country and fulfil their rights and obligations to care for Country through weeyn,” she said.

“The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape is an incredibly special and unique place.

Warrnambool

The Warrnambool Easter Arts Festival is a jam-packed program of events, catering for all ages.

The ‘Way of the Cross Walk’ will begin at 11am today (Good Friday), with participants walking from Cannon Hill to Lake Pertobe.

Market goers will be able to enjoy ‘Market by the Merri’ at Lake Pertobe between 10am-2pm today (Friday) while youngsters can search for over 10,000 chocolate Easter eggs at Flagstaff Hill until 5pm today.

As part of its school holiday program, Flagstaff Hill will also host an ‘Autumn Adventures’ program – offering kids activities, farm animals, yummy food, fresh air and ocean views.

This Easter Saturday pack a picnic basket and some chairs and head to Lake Pertobe to enjoy some free live music between 11am and 1.30pm courtesy of the Lakes and Craters Band and the Warrnambool City Band.

From Good Friday through until Easter Sunday, the annual Easter fishing competition will once again run on the Hopkins River in Simpson Street, Warrnambool.

And for motoring enthusiasts of all ages, Premier Speedway will again host the final round of the annual Easter Trail.

The event is sure to have a great field of Sprintcars, offering exciting track action from around 5pm.

The Combined Churches will host an Easter Sunrise service at 6.30am Sunday at Cannon Hill.

Spoilt for Choice: Port Fairy Easter market. 2023E

Port Fairy

Visitors to Port Fairy this weekend will be spoilt for choice, with a range of dining and entertainment options, pristine beaches and the always-popular Port Fairy Community Market.

Ran by the Port Fairy Community House in conjunction with the local Belfast Lions Club, the Easter market will again feature more than 80 stalls offering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables through to jams, candles, clothes, local wine, flowers,

jewellery and collectables.

The large variety of quality stalls ensures there is something for everyone, while Lions club members will be on hand cooking a barbecue for hungry visitors. The market will run from 8.30am until 1pm at Railway Place, with live music provided throughout the morning.

There will be plenty of food trucks to keep market-goers well nourished, and a car boot sale will offer some great bargains.

Fire restrictions to lift Tuesday

SOUTH West CFA authorities are reminding landowners that fire restrictions will remain in place over the Easter long weekend across Corangamite, Warrnambool and Moyne shires, and burning off is prohibited without a permit.

While conditions are cooling and there has been some recent rain in these areas, it’s still not yet safe, or legal, to conduct private burn offs without an approved permit.

CFA District 5 assistant chief fire officer (ACFO) Richard Bourke said while some areas in these municipalities are beginning to green up, residents must adhere to the Fire Danger Period conditions while it is still in place.

“We’re urging the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires,” he said.

“Residents may have spotted visible smoke from recent planned burns across parts of the South West, however these are being undertaken with valid permits.”

Mr Bourke said the grassfire risk remains throughout autumn and fires can still take hold and spread quickly in the right conditions.

“No burning off is permitting during the Fire Danger Period without a Permit to Burn,” he said.

“Lighting a fire in the open without a permit while fire restrictions are in place is an offence and can bring significant penalties.”

Landowners who wish to obtain a Permit to Burn during the Fire Danger Period can apply through the Fire Permits Victoria website at www.firepermits.vic.gov.au.

There are very strict conditions attached to these permits and the liability sits with the permit holder to ensure they always act safely. Monitor weather conditions and do not burn-off during days of high winds. More information about burnoff restrictions specific to your area can be found by consulting your local council.

More information and restrictions are published at www.cfa.vic.gov.au/ warnings-restrictions/fire-dangerperiod-restrictions.

Victorians can find out “Can I or Can’t I?” information at www.cfa.vic. gov.au/warnings-restrictions/can or by calling VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.

The Fire Danger Period will be lifted as of 1am next Tuesday, April 11.

EMPLOYMENT

No incentive for pensioners

A WARRNAMBOOL pensioner claims the government’s “unretire” package provides no incentive for seniors to return to the workforce.

Lyn (surname withheld on request) had recently lodged her interest to “un-retire” and return to the workforce on a part-time basis but said that after looking into the payment scheme further, she claims she would lose too much of her current pension to make it worthwhile.

The 76-year-old currently spends more than 24 hours each week doing voluntary work between the Uniting Church Op Shop and Foodshare but is also keen to spend some time doing paid employment.

“Pensioners like me who, I feel, are still capable of being out in the workforce on a part-time basis have no real financial incentive to do so,” Lyn said.

“There are so many businesses crying out for workers, and the government says its encouraging seniors to un-retire but we have more to lose than gain.

“Going back to work, for people like me, would mean being able to afford to go out for a nice meal during the week or perhaps enjoy a small luxury occasionally. But sadly I’d lose more (financially) than I’d gain.”

When delving further into the prospect of returning to work, Lyn discovered that single pensioners like herself could only early up to $190 per fortnight before her pension would be affected – at the rate of 40-50 cents in every dollar.

On the Australian Government website it was noted that the ‘pension income test’ is designed to encourage pensioners to supplement their pension with additional private income.

The site stated...“A pensioner can receive an amount of private income before their pension rate starts to reduce”.

This is the income free area which, from September 20, 2022, is $190 for singlerate pensioners and $336 for couples (combined).

For each dollar of income above the income free area, the single pension is reduced by 50 cents.

“So, I would work to earn a few dollars and lose a chunk of my pension?” Lyn said.

“Where’s the incentive in that? The government really needs to revisit this socalled scheme if it is serious about helping pensioners return to the workforce and, in turn, help businesses get the workforce they desperate need right now.”

Your home is your castle

YOUR property is one of your biggest financial assets, so when it comes time to sell, it’s important to do everything you can to achieve a top price.

Deciding which agent is best to market your home is one of the first and most important steps in the selling process.

Talk with friends, neighbours and family members who have sold in the past or who are also looking to sell about their experiences.

To make the process both smooth and successful you need a great agent who knows the market and is well informed of your needs.

One who keeps sale prices up and stress levels down.

Choosing an agent can sometimes feel like a lottery so make sure you are well armed with as much information about your local agents as possible.

Finding a reputable, experienced local agent is critical.

They know the local market like the back of their hand, regularly speak to buyers and know what it takes to sell a property just like yours.

They know how to piece together the right strategy to sell your home and have relationships with active buyers looking for properties just like yours.

They will take charge of the selling process, saving you both time and stress.

They also know how to maximise key selling points of your home to find a point of difference in today’s competitive market.

Presentation is key. Many sellers overlook this important strategy and it can make a huge difference to your selling price.

Never underestimate the value of a great write-up for your listing, along with professional photos.

When looking at selling your property you also need to be aware of the potential costs involved. Some of the typical costs you need to be aware of include real estate agent commissions, marketing and advertising fees and discharge of mortgage (in many cases).

Other costs can include conveyancing fees, moving costs, capital gains tax (if you are selling an investment property) and stamp duty (if you are purchasing a new property).

Cosmetic renovations, cleaning and repairs when preparing your home for sale and home staging (if you choose to use a property stylist) can also add to your expenses.

With so much to consider before, during and after sale, your local agent should be warm, welcoming and above all else well informed of your needs and expectations.

Buck named Blues AFL coach Championship coaches

selected

HAMPDEN Football Netball League has announced its netball coaches for the 2023 Western Region championships. The league will once again send three representative teams to the championships, to be played at the Warrnambool City Netball Association on Sunday June 4.

The coaches are as follows:

17 and under – Jacqui Bowman and Leah Sinnott.

15 and under – Stacey O’Sullivan and Marie Wall.

13 and under – Jaime Barr and Kym Grundy.

FORMER Koroit assistant coach Mathew Buck will lead AFLW club Carlton in season 2023.

Buck was appointed Carlton Football Club’s senior coach of its AFLW side earlier this week.

His former Hampden League club congratulated Buck on his appointment stating on social media “those who know and have worked closely with Bucky over the yeas know how much he’s put in to developing his coaching skills and networks in pursuit of a role like this….we can’t

think of anyone more ready for this job than him.”

In a statement released earlier this week, Carlton Football Club said it was “delighted” to announced Buck was taking the reins of the Blues’ AFLW program after building a strong resume across several levels of the game, in a coaching career spanning almost a decade to date.

Buck is no stranger to IKON Park, having been part of the club since 2021 as VFL senior assistant with the Carlton Reserves, alongside Luke Power.

Buck has also impressed in his work with the current AFLW playing group, recently stepping up to conduct optional, skills-development sessions with the players since early February.

This club-first mentality is a standout train for Buck, one which will no doubt endear him the Navy Blue faithful. With a professional background in education, Buck shares a passion for development and maximising the talents of young people.

The Blues’ currently has 14 of the side’s 26 players aged 23 years or under.

Houston wins three-star

MELBOURNE-BASED rider Sheridan Houston has taken out the three-star event at the Heytesbury Horse Trials.

Last weekend’s Southwest Equine Veterinary Group event, held on the grounds of the Heytesbury Pony Club in Scotts Creek, attracted 247 entries.

“It was a wonderful weekend of competition, with great entry numbers across six height levels,” Kerrie

McKenzie, secretary of the Heytesbury Pony Club said.

“The event requires riders to compete in dressage, show jumping and cross-country. The weather was perfect and the competition was close yet friendly.

“We’re very grateful to the Vogels family who generously donated some of their land for the running of the cross-country section, and to all the competitors who travelled from far and wide – with some from as

far as Wagga Wagga, Adelaide and all over Victoria.”

Tara Anderson (who won the one-star class) and Kayla Lenehan were two of several local riders to enjoy success over the weekend.

“We’ve had some lovely feedback from participants and spectators and we’re very happy with how the weekend went,” McKenzie said.

“We’re also grateful to the many volunteers who helped make the event the success that it was.”

Life membership for netball stalwart

MARG Morgan has been rewarded for her unwavering support, work and dedication to promoting the game of netball over many decades with a Netball Victoria life membership.

A familiar face to many around the western district courts, Marg finds nothing more rewarding than seeing people of all ages and abilities enjoying the sport, and thriving at their own level.

Since the early 1960s, as a junior playing in Timboon, Marg has devoted her life to promoting the game and encouraging others to become involve and strive to be the best they can.

“There is nothing more rewarding than watching players, coaches and umpires develop to their full potential,” Marg said.

“To see players progress through the ranks and then see their daughters, with just as much talent, come through and play in western region teams is so rewarding.

“In contrast to when I set out on my netball journey, there are so many pathways for people these days and I’m here to show players and parents all the opportunities that are available to enable them to be the best they can, no matter what level or what role they choose.”

Marg prides herself on being fair to all and treating everyone equally.

“All I want is to see people enjoying netball, learning and progressing to the level they’re comfortable with. I earned my B badge (umpiring) but unfortunately a knee injury stopped me going any further. Now, for me, it’s all about mentoring, coaching and educating.”

Marg’s list of achievements and positions held, both on and off the netball court, is long and varied.

From her early days playing for the Timboon Netball Club (against other town clubs such as Port Campbell, Princetown, Scott’s Creek, Simpson and Nirranda) through to leadership and administrative roles at Terang,

Marg has never been one to sit and delegate, preferring to take a more active role.

“I became president at Terang in my early 20s and over the following 27 or 28 years a lot of my time was spent as president, vice-president, umpire or coaching coordinator; whatever role was needed I was happy to take it on,” she said.

“The friendships I’ve made over the years through netball are lifelong and I treasure each and every one of them. That’s the beauty of our game.

“Creating opportunities is what it’s all about; opportunities for players, coaches and umpires. There are pathways available and we need to get those messages out there.”

With a clear objective of making netball enjoyable and accessible for all, Marg is also heavily involved in the coaching and running of the Warrnambool All Abilities team and the all abilities teams at a state level.

“We currently have about 25 allability players at the Warrnambool stadium of a Monday night,” Marg said.

“Over the last six years Warrnambool City has had one or more girls in the state team for the Murray Little Shield; a national competition held annually.

“Last year Victoria was runners-up which was very exciting.”

Reflecting on her Netball Victoria life membership, Marg said while she was extremely surprised to be named a recipient, awards don’t sit well with her because “that’s not who I am or what I’m about.”

“I absolutely love what I do and do all I can to provide opportunities for everyone interested.

“I’m very position about my role.”

Marg will be officially handed her life membership award at Netball Victoria’s AGM in Melbourne on May 28.
