FROM defensive driving and first aid through to shearing and barista basics, the FUSE South West program has given young people new skills to help them long into the future.

More than 1,000 participants from across five local government areas recently took part in the VicHealth funded FUSE program.

The small towns place-based vocational and mental health connection training program responded to the needs identified by young people in the south west region.

A diverse range of opportunities were delivered as part of the program, enriching participants with skills connections, personal growth, self-confidence, and wellbeing.

A range of free workshops were provided including first aid training, pool lifeguard training, traffic management, food handlers, introduction to shearing, defensive driving, barista basics and more.

A total of 56 workshops were delivered across five local government areas, attracting 1,028 participants.

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the program created a positive impact for young people by providing cost-free qualifications.

“FUSE also had a role in bolstering local employment opportunities, fostering community resilience, and positively influencing general wellbeing,” Cr Smith said.

“We are grateful to all the young co-design participants who generously shared their insights and ideas, contributing to the development of a program that truly resonated with the aspirations of local young people.

“The targeted workshops not only responded to the immediate needs identified by young individuals but also fostered social connections crucial for community vitality.”

Step back in time

MOYNE Shire is marking the Australian Heritage Festival with a series of open days, events and a historic photo exhibition with a modern twist.

The historic photo exhibition for the festival (which began last Friday and runs until Saturday, May 18) will give viewers a look into the past with 27 historic photos linked to QR codes around the shire.

The QR codes are printed on A4 signs located outside selected historic places and buildings.

When visitors find a sign, they can simply scan the QR code with a smart device and be transported to the past to view a historic photo of the site or building.

The QR code signs will be available throughout the duration of the festival.

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the signs were located in public spaces, easily accessible for everyone to get involved.

“It will be a fun challenge to locate all 27 signs,” Cr Smith said.

“The festival is a great opportunity for the community to explore our rich and diverse heritage.

“The 2024 festival’s theme of Connections acknowledges our link to people, places and the past, which create enduring connections.”

Scheduled events in Port Fairy will include walking tours, cemetery tours, a lighthouse open day and historic house open days. Koroit will offer self-guided heritage walking

trails, using walking maps that highlight historic locations in each town. QR codes in Port Fairy and Koroit can be found at the following locations: Koroit – Commercial Road, Art of Tea, Mickey Bourke’s Hotel, Koroit railway station, Koroit Convent and Lake View Road, Tower Hill.

Port Fairy – Griffith Island, Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club, Battery Hill, South Beach, Pea Soup Beach, West Beach Cantina, Ironbird Bookshop, Moyne River Wharf, Battery Lane and Drill Hall.

Other Port Fairy locations are Star of the West Hotel, Bank Street, Sackville Street, The Stump, Monday Distillery, Oak and Anchor, Seacombe House, Salt Hair and Port Fairy Botanic Gardens

Palliative care volunteers needed

SUPPORTING patients with a life-limiting illness or disease can be an extremely rewarding experience.

South West Healthcare is offering palliative care training to volunteers of any age to help patients through their last stages of life.

Executive director for nursing and midwifery, Sue Anderton, said volunteers were so important to any organisation and this was especially so at South West Healthcare.

“Our volunteers assist across a number of areas including administration assistance, wards, palliative care and allied health departments,” Ms Anderton said.

“We’re grateful for everything they do and are looking forward to providing training to those

interested in the palliative care area.”

Commencing on Wednesday, May 15, South West Healthcare is looking to train community members interested in the opportunity to volunteer and support patients in the local area with a life limiting illness or disease.

Volunteer coordinator Julie Evans said the sessions would run every Wednesday for five weeks, with attendees completing the course on June 12.

“We’re seeking to boost our volunteer numbers and through the training hope to develop our skilled volunteer base particularly in the palliative care unit,” Ms Evans said.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is asked to contact Ms Evans on 5563 1459.

Interested in becoming a councillor?

ARE you interested in shaping the future of Moyne?

With council elections to be held later this year, now is the time to learn more about leadership opportunities that enable you to make a difference.

Councils are the closest level of government to community.

To represent their communities successfully, they need great quality candidates to put their hand up for election.

Potential council candidates are encouraged to engage with the Municipal Association of Victoria’s (MAV) Stand for Council campaign.

To support potential candidates Moyne Shire Council, in partnership with the MAV and other councils in the region, is hosting a Stand for Council information session at the Lighthouse Theatre on June 27.

The MAV will also be providing a Citizen to Councillor Guide 2024.

This guide for prospective candidates will help them further understand the roles and responsibilities of a councillor and the importance of this elected position.

Moyne Shire Council acting chief executive officer Jodie McNamara said strong local leadership was extremely important.

“For a council to be effective it needs community leaders to put their hands up and become candidates,” Ms McNamara said.

“I encourage anyone considering standing in the election later this year to come along or log into the information session and use the resources of the MAV’s Stand for Council campaign.”

MAV chief executive officer Kelly Grisby said the MAV Stand for Council campaign was designed to encourage and support a diverse range of candidates from across the Victorian community including First Nations, and new and emerging communities.

“If you are thinking of nominating for council as a candidate, these sessions and resources will help you to further consider the broad responsibilities of a councillor, the wide range of issues you will be required to make decisions about and the time commitment,” Ms Grigsby said.

For more information on the MAV Stand for Council campaign go https://www.mav.asn.au/stand-forcouncil-2024.

Lest we forget Generations unite in remembrance

GENERATIONS stood side by side to remember and pay their respects at ANZAC Day services across the district yesterday.

Not even the early, cold winds could deter a large crowd from attending a dawn service at the Warrnambool War Memorial and by mid-morning an even bigger crowd gathered for the annual march and service.

Warrnambool RSL commemorations convenor Colin Davies welcomed a large gathering at the Warrnambool War Memorial, as veterans, school students, families and representatives from various community, service and sporting clubs stood side by side to remember the fallen and pay tribute to all those who served, and continue to serve, our nation.

“Today is of great significance as we gather to remember and pay tribute to all those who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations,” Mr Davies said.

“It’s wonderful to see so many veterans here today, along with so many young people and that reassures us all that the Anzac spirit will live on.”

Sitting quietly among the crowd, reflecting on the past and remembering mates long gone, 102 year-old Jack Bullen was happy to again be a part of the commemoration.

A World War II Army veteran, Mr Bullen was proud of the efforts of his fellow Australians.

“I managed to get in (the Army) when I was 18 because I didn’t quite tell the truth about my age,” he recalled.

“I rolled up to enlist, filled out the forms, told them I was 18 and they said come back in two years – so I went outside for a few minutes,

walked back in and when they again asked me how old I was I said 20. I was right to go then.”

Guest speaker Lieutenant Colonel Cate McGregor paid special thanks to all veterans and current serving members and emphasised what a “blessing” it was to now live in peace.

“I attended my very first Anzac Day service in uniform in 1974 and today this may very well be my last (in uniform),” she said.

“But I am so proud to wear this uniform and to stand alongside comrades. We commend those Aussies who gave their lives in service; who were willing to face danger and death.

“I’ve been privileged to lead Australian soldiers overseas and to hear them speak of their love for their mates and their general desire to never let their team-mates down.

“If our fallen soldiers could see these young people today they would be so very proud.”

Members of the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums earlier led a procession along Liebig Street to the memorial where crowds gathered to watch and cheer as war veterans marched, along with members of the Air Force and Army cadets, school groups, guides, scouts and various community groups and service organisations.

Throughout the morning a large number of floral arrangements were laid including those from Warrnambool City mayor Ben Blain, veterans’ groups, schools and emergency services personnel among others.

Yesterday also saw crowds gather for services across the district, including at Port Fairy, Yambuk, Panmure, Koroit and Dennington.

Enjoy a walk through time

LOCALS and visitors to Port Fairy can enjoy a ‘walk through time’ on Friday, May 10.

The annual, free event will again be presented by the Port Fairy Historical Society and will give people the chance to learn more about some of the town’s historical buildings.

The walk will begin at Fiddler’s Green, on the corner of Bank and Sackville streets, at 1pm.

The stories of the many businesses in Sackville Street, and one in Cox Street, will be presented by Richard Patterson, Carol Heard, Dr Frances Guyett, Glen Foster and Anthony Phillips.

The guest speakers will talk about the history of the various buildings chosen and then break into smaller groups to walk around the streets, answering questions at the site of the buildings.

Some of the buildings that will be visited include Jago’s Garage (which has been in the Jago family for over 100 years) and the current supermarket (which originally had five different shops).

The site of Tennyson’s Hotel, which was burnt down in the 1970s, will also be visited, along with Brookes Hardware (formerly Guyett’s Furniture Store).

Koroit comes alive

THE Koroit Irish Festival has begun and the famous village is already kicking its heels up.

The population of Koroit is expected to double this weekend with 4000 people enjoying festivities.

This will include high-class Irish performers such as the Christine Ayres School of Irish Dancing, Old Melbourne Road, Kellys Wayke and Maria Forde.

There will also be two national titles handed out, Australia’s Most Irish Name and the Australian Danny Boy Championship.

The popular street procession will return as will the Flaming Folk Person of the Year, the Gathering of Green Eyes and the famed Spud Trilogy: Picking-Peeling-Eating.

Saturday will be the festival’s main day, with the official opening concert tonight (Friday).

Sunday is looming as a big day as well with live music, a big breakfast, a

Gaelic Games carnival and a Sunday market.

Koroit Irish Festival president Adele MacDonald said the build-up to the festival had been huge.

“It’s been extraordinary, the work the committee has put in and the involvement of the community,” Ms MacDonald said.

“There is just so much excitement around town, shops and houses are decorated, everyone’s talking about the festival and there are so many visitors, it’s amazing.

“We want everyone to come along and have the best time ever; to have so much fun.”

The festival ambassador for this year is Koroit legend Maureen Keane.

Ms Keane will be interviewed at the opening night concert and will lead the street procession.

The Irish Ambassador to Australia, Tim Mawe, will also be in town for the festival.

A timetable of events can be found on the festival website

Be aware of fox baiting areas

PET owners are advised to keep their cats and dogs well clear of baited areas as the Warrnambool City Council continues its fight against foxes.

Bait will be laid in scrubland at Pickering Point, behind the skate park, sections of Lake Pertobe and areas west of Thunder Point.

The baiting program will run from April 22 until May 20, with pets banned from all baited areas until June 17.

Warrnambool director city infrastructure David Leahy said that fox baiting was carried out to help protect native wildlife, but it was important that pet owners were aware of the baited areas.

“Pickering Point and Lake Pertobe in particular have a year-round ban on dogs in any case, but we want every pet owner in Warrnambool to be aware of the baited areas and to do what they can to keep their pets clear of them,” he said.

“As well as the map on our website, all baited sites have physical signs warning people of the dangers.”

Mr Leahy said that the poison used, PAPP, has an antidote, but it needs to be administered by a vet quickly.

“If you notice your pet is lethargic, has loss of limb function, blue discolouration of the tongue and gums, or any other uncharacteristic activity, and you believe it may have been in a baited area, please take it to a vet that carries the antidote immediately.

“The window of time between the pet eating the bait and the antidote being effective is only about an hour.

“Bait will be buried to help protect birds and deployed away from paths. It will also be tracked via GPS to allow for removal at the end of the program.”

Mr Leahy said the risk of secondary poisoning was also practically nonexistent.

In Warrnambool, the following vets carry the necessary antidote:

• The Vet Group Wollaston, at 59 Mortlake Road Warrnambool, 5561 6911.

• The Warrnambool Veterinary Clinic, at 514 Raglan Parade, 5559 0222.

After expanding its fox baiting program in 2023, council will continue with a May-June as well as a SeptemberOctober baiting program.

“The aim is to target foxes both before and after their winter dormancy,” Mr Leahy said.

“The areas where we will be baiting are home to diverse and vulnerable native fauna species, but they are also areas where foxes either live or pass through.

“While foxes will always pose a threat to wildlife, even a single fox can cause a lot of damage in a very short time, so every fox we can remove from the environment has the potential for a big impact.”

Residents who find fox carcasses on their property can contact council on 5559 4800 to have them removed.

Merrivale to host repair cafe

DO you have something that needs mending, repairing or altering?

The Merrivale Community Association is currently planning to host regular ‘Repair Café’ sessions at the Merrivale football clubrooms, starting in June. The association looks set to host the free café for residents to repair, reuse and renew household items such as bicycles, clothing, garden tools, toys, furniture and more.

Repair Café is a worldwide movement that encourages people to repair and reuse items rather than discard them.

This then helps extend the lifespan of products, reduce waste and lower the environmental impact of consumption.

A community information session has been planned for Friday, May 3 at the A.L. Lane Pavilion in Hyland Street, Warrnambool.

Guest speaker will be Brenda O’Connor from the Merrivale Community Association.

A second information session will be held on Monday May 6 from 7pm-8pm at the Merrivale football clubrooms, Merrivale Drive, Warrnambool.

Guest speaker will be Natasha Mills from the Port Fairy Repair Café.

The Merrivale group is keen to hear from residents about what they feel needs repairing and/or what skills they may be able to contribute.

For more information contact Brenda O’Connor (association secretary) via merrivaleca@gmail.com.

For plant enthusiasts

PLANT enthusiasts across the district are now enjoying the fourth edition of the ‘Plants of the Great South West.’

The book was launched in Warrnambool last Friday by author Kevin Sparrow, who is a long-time member of the Society for Growing Australian Plants (Warrnambool and District Group).

In front of an audience of more than 60 enthusiasts, Mr Sparrow (who was joined by chief executive officer of the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority Adam Bester) gave an insight into his journey as an author.

“When I began this journey some 20 years ago, I could never have imagined that by now I would be completing the fourth edition of what has been a very popular book,” he said.

“That first book consisted of 160 pages, featuring 185 species. This fourth edition has 528 pages featuring 725 species.”

In the mid-2000s Kevin discovered digital photography and set out to photograph as many plants as he could find.

His wife Joyce assisted him as a ‘spotter’ – finding all the plants she could for him to photograph.

Together they enjoy travelling the countryside on the hunt for plants, especially orchids.

The second edition was published in 2013 (with Jodie Honan as editor) and comprised 368 pages featuring 490 species.

Six years later the third edition was released – with 448 pages and 608 species.

“I have always wanted to include more indigenous content in the new editions and I’ve been conscious of the fact that our traditional owners have been looking after

country for thousands of years, nurturing and caring for the plants and animals and I wanted to find ways of recognising this aspect in this new edition,” Kevin said.

“The inclusion of indigenous knowledge and artwork in this new edition is not only respectful but enriches the book’s value by honouring the deep connection between the land and its traditional custodians.

“The artwork featured on the front cover (Murnong – yam daisies) was painted by Lee-Anne Clarke.”

TEDDY bears came out of the woods last weekend for an extra special picnic at Flagstaff Hill.

Some of the youngest visitors to the Warrnambool attraction enjoyed spending time touring the village before their favourite teddies underwent a ‘medical check up’ – and once given a bill of good health, the teddies and their owners enjoyed a special picnic on the lawn.

Live music, story telling and craft sessions were also enjoyed over two funfilled days.

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT

by MLA’s

YARDING 1000 CHANGE 1761 less The quality was very plain compared to last week with cattle showing seasonal effects of the dry conditions with trade cattle appearing the most effected. Less weight was on offer with the bullocks and grown cattle. The mixture of beef and dairy cows was mostly good to fair quality with more lightweight cows on offer. Not all the regular buyers were present or fully active on a yarding consisting of 149 grown cattle, 387 trade weights along with 446 cows and 18 grown bulls and as a consequence the market was very soft over most categories and lacked motivation to be 20c to 30c/kg cheaper and more in places.

Some categories, like grown heifers and steers remained firm to slightly softer with all feeder weights 20 to 30c/kg dearer with local interest the driver.

Vealers sold between 280c and 355c/kg. Trade steers and heifers were selling from 250c to 318c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 326c with manufacturing steers selling up to 245c/kg.

Heavy beef cows sold from 200c to 262c/kg for one pen with the medium weights selling between 130c and 185c/kg. Covered dairy cows were generally between 160c/kg.and190c/kg grown beef bulls to 210c/kg.

HAMPDEN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE AROUND THE GROUNDS

Run continues for Roosters

AFTER three rounds of the 2024 Hampden League season, South Warrnambool has continued to dominate and sits undefeated at the top of the ladder.

The reigning premiers, who are now sitting four from four (having played their round four match against Koroit on Good Friday) travelled to Hawkesdale last Saturday to take on the Hamilton Kangaroos.

An even first quarter saw the visitors one point down after kicking four straight goals, but a second quarter comeback saw the Roosters go into the main break with a handy 31-point lead.

The Roosters stepped up their intensity and pressure on the ball in the second half, dominating the play and making good use of the ball, adding six goals on the scoreboard while limiting the Kangaroos’ scoring opportunities.

Final scores were South Warrnambool 15.11.101 to Hamilton 6.4.40.

Best for the Roosters were Myles McCluggage, Nick Thompson, Daniel Nicholson, Patrick Anderson, Harry Lee and Riley Thomas.

Shannon Beks, Sam Kelly, Myles McCluggage, Daniel Nicholson and Riley Thomas each contributed two goals.

Patrick Anderson, Jack Dye, Josh Folkes, Max Irving and Nick Thompson kicked a goal each.

In other round three Hampden League matches, Koroit defeated Camperdown, Terang Mortlake were big winners over Portland, North Warrnambool defeated Port Fairy and the Blues went down to Cobden.

Round four tomorrow (Saturday) will see Portland host the Kangaroos, Warrnambool will be at home to Camperdown, Port Fairy will host Cobden and North Warrnambool and Terang Mortlake will meet at Bushfield.

THE Western District Showjumping Championships made a successful return after soaring temperatures forced the event’s postponement earlier this year.

The popular event was originally scheduled to be held in March but was postponed due to 39-degree weather.

Competitors descended on the Mortlake Showjumping Grounds at Tea Tree Lake reserve in Mortlake across the weekend, putting on a display of pageantry and ability for spectators to enjoy.

Caramut Riding Club president Tim Haworth said it had been a “terrific weekend” of riding.

“The weather was spot on and we had plenty of competitors,” he said.

“There was not as many as we would have had, but we still had very good fields.

“We had some of the top-class riders from both South Australia and Victoria.”

Mr Haworth said some of the highlights included strong performances from former Olympian Russell Johnstone,

and Scottie Barclay finishing third in the Binni Barcly Grand Prix, an event named in memory of his mother.

“A lot of riders enjoyed success across all the events; it wasn’t just one person, with a lot of major competitors managing to win a class, spreading out the quality field.

“But the surface was good, and we are very pleased with the whole event.”

In the Class 1 Ackroyd & Dadswell Woolbuyers 1m Super Page 2, Clyde Shera Jones (Koyuna Izzy) was successful with Sophie Sawicki (Valiant Star) and Andrew Long (Hidden Option) finishing second and third, respectively.

Andrew Long (St James’ Palace) was first in the Class 2 Southwest Equine 1.10m, followed by Monique Johnstone (Winterwood Banjo) and Clyde Shera Jones (Si Si Strike).

The Class 3 Mt Shadwell Hotel 1.20m saw Adam Johnston and Gonna Fly Now live up to the name for a first overall result, followed by Kristy Bruhn (Pure Diamond) and Russell Johnstone (Cantara).

Win for Team Kenna

round series,

continued their run of success with victory in the Class 4 Batron Equine 1.30m, followed by Scottie Barclay (Cashed up) and Kristy Bruhn (Viva Baluna).

In the WestVic Tyres 1m 2Phase Nellie Rogers (Snow Valour) was named winner ahead of Rachael Gane (Minnamurra Park Apona) and Tim Haworth (Silent Night).

The John Barcly Memorial Junior Championship saw Lucy Borrack earn first and second riding Beethoven and Mighty Tosca, respectively, with Jemma McCormack (Parole E) third.

In the Mount Shadwell Championship Andrew Long (Hidden Option) clinched the win followed by Greg Smith (Diamond B Bugsy) and Jessica Kent (Canuda Enigma).

The Binni Barclay Grand Prix saw Russell Johntone (Cantara) secure first place with Mikayla Hogg (Bellhaven Corringa) and Scottie Barclay) rounding out the top three.

Kristy Bruhn (Pure Diamond) claimed victory in the Olivine Championship, with Rachael Gane (Minnamurra Park Calatol) in second and Brooke Hickey (Benjamin Franklin BE) in third.

Lachie Wake (Riccardo MVNZ) took home first place in the Mini Prix, followed by Ally Wake (Olympia MVNZ) and Brooke Hickey (Kentaur Coconut). Last weekend’s event only featured two-days of the usual three-day program held over a long weekend.

The third day of events have been rescheduled to May 19 at the Hexham Equestrian Centre.

National selection for Eva

WARRNAMBOOL netballer Eva Ryan has been named in the 2024 Australian 17 and under squad. Ryan was one of seven Victorians named in the 36-member national team, announced earlier this week by Netball Australia.

The 66 athletes were selected for the 17/U and 19/U Australian squads (including 12 Victorians) following the recent National Netball Championships. The newly named squads will take part in training camps delivered by Netball Australia at the Australian Institute of Sport in July.

“We’re proud to have so many Victorian athletes selected in national squads, it’s a great reflection of the strength of our pathway,” Netball Victoria general manager, high performance and pathways, Megan Simpson said.

“National selection is a fantastic reward for our athletes’ commitment and talent, and an exciting opportunity to continue their development alongside peers from across the country.”

Ms Simpson said Netball Victoria would continue to evaluate and develop its pathway programs to ensure Victorian netballers have the best possible opportunities to thrive.

May Racing Carnival 2024

Welcome to Warrnambool

Welcome to May race week and if you’ve travelled to be here, a very warm welcome to Warrnambool!

The May Racing Carnival is a truly iconic event that puts Warrnambool on the map.

Often when I meet people who aren’t from the area and I tell them I’m from Warrnambool, it’s one of the things people from all over can associate with the city.

And it’s for good reason. It’s one of the biggest events on the Australian horse racing calendar.

Last year the event saw an attendance of almost 30,000 over the three days, including almost 14,000 on the Thursday for the Grand Annual.

And with many of these people travelling from far and wide to attend, it’s obviously great news for our local economy.

With people staying for multiple nights, it gives Warrnambool the chance to showcase its diverse and delectable range of cafes and restaurants, as well as various retailers and other services.

And of course, it’s an especially busy time for accommodation providers.

As a traditional summer destination, hosting a major event like this outside of our peak season is really important.

In addition to the significant economic boost (the carnival injects as much as $15 million into the local economy) it’s an excellent opportunity to market Warrnambool as a year-round destination.

Natural attributes like Lady Bay, Thunder Point, the Merri and Hopkins rivers as well as nearby spots like Tower Hill and Childers Cove can be enjoyed at any time of year.

And with winter approaching, our largest annual visitors, the Southern Right Whales, are preparing to return to the Logans Beach Whale Nursery to birth and raise their calves.

Add in attractions like Flagstaff Hill, Lake Pertobe and the Deep Blue Hot Springs and you can see why Warrnambool makes such an appealing location for a holiday, and council will have a marketing presence at the races to demonstrate what Warrnambool can offer.

There’s nothing quite like the May Racing Carnival, and there’s nowhere quite like Warrnambool, and I hope everyone in attendance has a wonderful time.

Large crowds again expected

CLOSE to 30,000 racegoers are expected to flock to Warrnambool over the three days of the 2024 May Racing Carnival.

With more than 12,500 expected on Thursday alone, the highlyanticipated event again looks set to boost the local economy.

Based on previous year’s figures, the Warrnambool Racing Club anticipates in excess of 5,500 patrons will enjoy ‘package experiences’ across the three days – which amounts to more than 30,000 food items served.

This doesn’t include the volume of food sold through on-course vendors; and drinks will also flow throughout the carnival, with patrons eager to enjoy their day/s out.

“The track is going well, with consistent grass coverage across the course, including in the paddocks,” a racing club spokesperson said last week.

“Representatives from Racing Victoria recently visited to conduct an annual site inspection and we’re thrilled with the positive results we received from the review.

“The rail will be in the true position and racegoers again look set to enjoy an amazing carnival.”

Local stable in the mix

WARRNAMBOOL-based stables, Dabernig Racing, will no doubt be a crowd favourite at the track during the May Racing Carnival.

Tom and Cassi Dabernig relocated to Warrnambool in 2021 to begin what has become an exciting chapter in their racing story.

Having worked his whole life at Lindsay Park with his family, the decision to move to the seaside town was not an easy one for Tom.

With the support of his young family, Tom established his own training operation and today Dabernig Racing has a team of 60 horses in-training and employs about 25 staff.

“I’m always striving to evolve as a trainer and with support from my wife (Cassi) and family we’ve really hit the ground running since moving here,” Tom said.

“I’m passionate about the country environment as a preferred place to train horses and I’m eager to incorporate the beach and all that Warrnambool has to offer into our training regime.”

In just a few short years Tom has established himself as a well-respected and successful trainer.

Since earning his trainer’s licence in 2004, his list of credits continues to grow. His story is one of success and triumph.

He entered into a training partnership with David Hayes in 2014 and three years later won the Racing Victoria Fred Hoysted Medal (recognising excellence during the season).

He took out the Victorian and Metropolitan Trainers’ Premiership in both 2019 and 2020, when he also

became head trainer of Lindsay Park and was awarded leading trainer of the 2020 Flemington Spring Carnival.

Between 2014 and 2020, Tom won 19 Group 1 races in the Lindsay Park training partnership.

Now running his own business from the heart of Warrnambool, Tom is keen to build on his success.

“We really appreciate the support of the Warrnambool Racing Club as well as local businesses and suppliers,” he said.

“Last year we had a number of runners at the May Racing Carnival, with a frustrating six placings; the previous year we did have a winner.”

Dabernig Racing is planning on entering a number of runners over the three-day carnival.

On day one (Tuesday) the stables will have its first entry over the hurdles under the Dabernig banner, Maatsuyker, in the maiden hurdle over 3200m.

They will also look to run Picaroon in the open 1700m race with local jockey, Tom Madden, as well as Calico Jack in the BM70 over 1220m (part-owned by well-known local businessman, Colin McKenna).

“We’ll have a number of runners over days two and three, however these are yet to be finalised.”

To date, Tom’s biggest success at the May Racing Carnival was as trainer of the 2019 Warrnambool Cup winner Furrion.

“The Warrnambool carnival is a great annual event and it’s something we always enjoy being a part of,” Tom said.

“The community really gets behind this in so many ways which is fantastic. Let’s hope we have a winner or two.”

WHEN the final race of the program is run and won, the entertainment continues trackside on Tuesday and Wednesday.

There’s no need to leave the track once the day’s race program is over, with live bands set to take to the stage to continue the party atmosphere well into the night.

‘Queen Rocks’ (The Definitive Tribute) will feature on Tuesday evening, while on Wednesday crowds will enjoy a double shot of iconic Aussie rock with ‘The Australian Midnight Oil Tribute Show’ (and Cold Chisel – Keeping the Legend Alive).

‘Queen Rocks’ authentically captures Queen’s unique sound and theatrical stage show, performing all of Queen’s iconic hits.

This show brings to life the showmanship, musicianship and majestic power that saw Queen rock stadiums all over the world.

‘The Australian Midnight Oil Tribute Show’ is a musical ensemble based in Melbourne, which pays homage to one of Australia’s greatest rock bands, Midnight Oil.

If you’re a fan of the iconic hits and passionate energy that Midnight Oil is well-known for, this tribute show will not disappoint.

The band consists of five players who work hard to recreate the magic of Midnight Oil’s concerts.

Rotarians encourage recycling

THE Rotary Club of Warrnambool Central is encouraging all racegoers to place empty cans and recyclable bottles in the designated bins trackside.

The May Racing Carnival is an ideal opportunity for the club to raise some vital funds which, in turn, will benefit the local community and beyond.

“We have placed 40 bins at various locations around the venue and they are all clearly marked for recycling,” Rotary Club of Warrnambool Central environment director Tony Davis said.

“We’re encouraging everyone who attends the carnival over the three days to please place all their empty cans and recyclable drink containers in these bins.

“And please don’t crush your cans because for every can or container (uncrushed) we collect we will receive 10 cents which really adds up to a considerable sum.”

Mr Davis said the money raised from the collection of the drink containers and cans will be put to good use through various projects supported by Rotary.

“All money raised is greatly appreciated and always put to good use. We run community raffles, fund students to attend the annual National Youth Science Forum and also help ensure communities in Papua New Guinea have access to clean water.

“These are just a small handful of the many projects we undertake and support and it’s through community support and donations that we are able to continue this great work.”

Mr Davis said not only will the recycling project at the May Racing Carnival be an important fundraiser, it will also help to ensure these containers don’t end up in landfill.

History timeline of the

The first colonists arrive and settle in Warrnambool.

Warrnambool’s first race meeting is conducted on a course close to the landing place in the bay, between Lake Pertobe and Lady Bay, known as Jetty Flat. These races became known as the ‘Annual Races’, and were generally held in March.

Mr Betts’ Harry Lorrequer wins Warrnambool’s first jumping race, a hurdle race over nine obstacles.

Warrnambool’s first steeplechase is run over three miles on the second day of the Annual Races. It is won by Woodbine, ridden by Mr Jellie.

The Government grants an area of approximately 100 acres, being part of the present racecourse, as a racing and recreation reserve. George Bostock, Francis Tozer and Samuel Macgregor are appointed as the first trustees.

The first race meeting is held on the new course. The two heats of the first race, a Maiden Plate, are won by James Wilson’s Saddler. Wilson subsequently founded the celebrated St. Albans Stud at Geelong. The second day features a three-mile steeplechase, worth 40 sovereigns. It was won by Mr Bostock’s Rambler, defeating six others.

The Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club is formed. It was briefly known as the Warrnambool & Belfast Amateur Turf Club, and held its first race meeting at Belfast (Port Fairy) in December 1859. Thereafter, the club conducted all of its race meetings at Warrnambool. It raced on the middle day of the May Carnival for many decades, and retained its entirely amateur status until it resumed racing after a break for World War II. It merged with the Warrnambool Racing Club in 1964.

The winning post and booths are moved to the town side of the course, after having been located on the opposite side of the course since 1859. In 1868 a small grandstand was erected opposite the winning post.

Jump into your new career here

The stewards – Francis Tozer, Henry Phillips, Samuel Macgregor, Anthony Mackenzie and John Russell Evans – lay out a new steeplechase course across the paddocks adjacent to the racecourse, in preparation for the first Winter Steeplechase Meeting on Thursday 13 June. The meeting features the Warrnambool Handicap Steeplechase (now the Grand Annual Steeplechase) over about three and a half miles, for 100 sovereigns with a sweepstake of approximately 33 sovereigns added. Prior defeated his ten rivals, to give owner Thomas Skene, jockey William Harden, and trainer Andrew Ferguson the honour of victory in the first running of the race.

The first Warrnambool Cup is run over two miles on Thursday 20 March (the second day of the Annual Races), for a stake of 200 sovereigns with a sweepstake of approximately 35 sovereigns added. Villiers (by Panic), owned by Edward Twomey and ridden Rees, won the race.

During the course of a crowded meeting, chaired by Henry Phillips, at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday 5 April 1873 to make arrangements for the Winter Steeplechase Meeting a motion – moved by James Astley Bromfield and seconded by Robert Hood – that a club be formed to be called the Warrnambool Racing Club is passed with great enthusiasm. A subcommittee of five; Bromfield, Phillips, Francis Tozer, Samuel Parker and Richard Lane is appointed to draw up the rules of the club. The club was officially constituted during a meeting at the Commercial Hotel on 19 June 1873. Robert Hood, Henry Phillips, James Astley Bromfield, Francis Tozer, Octavius Palmer, Anthony Mackenzie, Robert Brand Paterson, William Ross, Thomas Rutledge, Richard Lane, and Augustus “Gussy” Bostock were elected to the first committee.

A new lawn grandstand (subsequently extended, and still in use) is officially opened by the Governor of Victoria, Sir George Bowen at the Amateur Turf Club races and used for the first time that day, and at the Annual Races on the following two days. The grandstand was part of extensive improvements, including a new stone building containing the stewards’ room, secretary’s office and weighing area.

What is now known as the May Carnival begins to take its current shape. The Steeplechase Meeting is moved from June to May and there are three days of racing, with the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club racing on the middle day. The Annual Races were scaled back and were not held after 1882.

The name ‘Wangoom Handicap’ is used for the first time, although the race that still carries that name has for a long time been considered to have its genesis in the Handicap Flat Race of 1880 and the Flying Stakes of 1881 to 1885. The race has always been run over six furlongs or 1200 metres (since 1973) – save for 1886 and 1887 when it was contested over a mile.

The Racing Club purchases 20 acres of ‘Brierly’ for £1400 before the scheduled auction of 150 acres of that property on 18 November 1890. After protracted negotiations, in 1899 the club purchases the other paddock that the steeplechase course traverses from James Granter for £800.

The Warrnambool Handicap Steeplechase is renamed the Grand Annual Steeplechase. The name Warrnambool Cup returns, that race having for a time been known as the Handicap Flat Race (1880—1887) and the Railway Stakes (1888-1894).

A major scheme of improvements, costing more than £4000 and featuring the laying out of a new

track, is completed. The course is now left-handed rather than right

bringing it into line with almost all other

racecourses, and meaning that all flat and hurdle races are now run ‘the Melbourne way’.

A grandstand capable of seating over 800 people is erected on the hill, along with spacious new booths and additional seating on the grassy slopes.

Some patrons arrive at the course by aeroplane for the first time at the Summer Meeting in January. A few months later an aeroplane follows the field in the Grand Annual, and contributes to five of the seven runners falling.

An on-course totalisator operates at Warrnambool for the first time at the Summer Meeting. An illegal totalisator had first appeared at Warrnambool, on the flat below the hill, on the first day of the Steeplechase Meeting in 1879. The off-course totalisator was not introduced in Victoria until March 1961.

As World War II intensifies racing at Warrnambool goes into to recess following the 1941 May Carnival. Picnic meetings were held at Warrnambool by an assortment of clubs from 1943. The WRC resumed racing with a picnic meeting on Easter Monday, 1944. It conducted professional meetings in 1946 but the Summer Carnival and the May Carnival did not resume until 1947.

Prior to the Summer Carnival the winning post is moved half a furlong down the straight to around its present location, in order to lengthen the run home.

After the May Carnival a new members’ enclosure is constructed opposite the winning post, the centrepiece of which is a new members’ grandstand that is constructed following the dismantling and relocation of the old hill grandstand. Part of that grandstand is still in use.

The steeplechase course undergoes major alterations, with horses to now turn right rather than left after jumping the Tozer Road double (save for on the first circuit in the Grand Annual). Steeplechases will be completed in the same direction as flat and hurdle races and finish at the flat race winning post, rather than the special winning post opposite the public grandstand that had been in use for some years. A late decision was made not to use the new course at the 1970 May Carnival due to the heavy state of the track. The first steeplechase over the new course was the December Steeplechase in 1970. Beau Dallo, ridden by Kelvin Bourke for Flemington trainer Bob Winks, won the race. The 1971 Brierly was run over the new course, but with the washout of the second and third days of that year’s carnival the new course was not used for the Grand Annual until 1972.

H.R.H. Prince Charles becomes the first member of the Royal Family to attend a race meeting at Warrnambool. Following the Prince’s departure the Minister for Agriculture, Ian Smith, officially opened the new members’ grandstand complex.

The Wangoom Handicap, traditionally held on the first day of the May Carnival, is moved to the middle day and carries substantially increased prizemoney.

The Galleywood Hurdle is introduced to the programme on the middle day of the May Carnival. It was named after the local legend that won the 1986 Grand Annual after he had crashed at the last fence in the 1984 renewal of that race. The State Government officially recognises the May Carnival as a Victorian Major Event.

A full track reconstruction is completed, at a cost of $2.25 million. The reconstruction included laying new drainage and a new base, and the sowing of warm and cool season turf.

Construction of a new grandstand complex between the existing members’ grandstand and the public stand is completed, at a cost of $2.2 million. The complex features the Matilda Room, which is named in honour of the connection the Warrnambool course has with ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s unofficial national anthem, Waltzing Matilda.

The Thackeray Steeplechase and the Kevin Lafferty Hurdle (named the Tom Corrigan Hurdle in its first year) are introduced in July.

The Jericho Cup, a $300,000 Benchmark 90 flat race run over about 4600 metres and taking in a large part of the famous Grand Annual Steeplechase course (with the jumps removed), is run for the first time. It is won by High Mode, ridden by Clayton Douglas and trained by Anthony Freedman. The impacts of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic saw the 2020 TAB Warrnambool May Racing Carnival reduced from three days to two days, with a restructured program. Day one, Tuesday 5 May hosted an all-jumps program with eight jumps races and day two, Wednesday 6 May featured a nine-race program exclusive to flat races. All five feature races were ran over the two days.

Extensions to the Matilda Room complex, including The Deck, Winner’s Room and the Corrigan Cafe are officially opened. The new facilities, which cost approximately $5.6M, had been ready for use at the 2020 May Carnival.
