Sweet surprise for Matilda

MATILDA Cowling’s Easter got off to a delicious start last Thursday.

The Warrnambool youngster was thrilled to receive a basket of Easter goodies as the lucky winner of the Warrnambool Weekly ‘guess the number of hidden eggs’ competition in last week’s edition.

Matilda and several other readers from across the district found and entered the exact number of hidden eggs, and her name was randomly drawn from a hat.

The Weekly thanks all those who took part in the competition.

Western district digs deep

DESPITE the pressures of high fuel costs and general living expenses, residents across the district once again dug deep for The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

The generosity of residents and visitors to the region once again shone bright last Friday, with the regional tally board showing Warrnambool ninth on the top 10 fundraising towns with an incredible total of $103,027.

Also on the regional board, the township of Garvoc collected $34,261, Port Fairy $21,788 and Koroit $9,206.

Koroit fire brigade captain Steve Giblin expressed his gratitude to volunteer collectors and those who donated.

“We had a wonderful response in our town; we collected just over $5,000 in the tins and a further $1,000 online which was amazing. Our community is very generous.”

Overall, the 2026 Good Friday Appeal raised a record-breaking $25,268,485 for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

The 95th annual appeal saw Victorians unite to support sick children, surpassing the previous year’s total by more than $1.4 million.

Eighteen towns across regional Victoria marked 50 years of fundraising, including Koroit and Port Fairy.

An incredible $2,150,000 was raised by the CFA this year, with over 225 brigades fundraising.

Penny Fowler, chair of the Good Friday Appeal, said each year was a reminder of just how far the work of The Royal Children’s Hospital goes across the state.

“Giving for the kids is at the heart of the Good Friday Appeal,” she said.

“The incredible generosity of regional Victoria continues to shine; from small towns to larger regional centres, communities have again united

to make a meaningful difference for sick children and their families.

“Families are doing it tougher than ever when it comes to cost of living.

“Their unwavering support highlights the compassion and strength of our regional volunteers, donors and supporters and we are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this year’s remarkable result.”

According to Rebecca Cowan, executive director of the appeal, this year’s appeal will continue its commitment to regional Victoria by funding essential equipment, scholarships and programs.

“A further $3 million will be distributed to five regional health services, bringing the total over three years of regional health service funding to $8.5 million.”

Since 1931, the Good Friday Appeal has raised over $517 million.

Seven decades of memories

DON and Phyllis Vaughan are not only husband and wife, they are soulmates who, together, have enjoyed 70 years of wedded bliss.

Married at the Christ Church in Warrnambool on April 7, 1956 the sprightly pair fondly remember their early days of courtship.

“I was 20 when I first met Phyllis back in the old hall at The Sisters,” Don recalled.

“She was only about 16 when we met at a dance; we had a lot of fun spending time together and with our friends.

“We really were just kids but it wasn’t that long and we were married. I can’t recall actually asking her it just happened. We had a lovely wedding and have had a wonderful life ever since.”

Born and raised in Framlingham, Don (who turns a sprightly 95 later this month) was an amateur jockey in the late 1940s and 50s, making his mark at various picnic meetings across the district and beyond.

“I rode a few winners in my time; I had a bit of luck,” he recalled.

“I also trained some racehorses but not once did I ever bet on the horses – and still haven’t. Nowadays I just enjoy watching them on the TV.”

The newlyweds spent their early married years on a 160acre dairy farm at Framlingham, milking about 60 cows in a walk-through dairy.

Only when the cows were dried off could they afford to take a short holiday away from the farm.

“We had some lovely trips,” Phyllis said.

“We raised four children on the farm; Glenda, Wendy, Kerrie and Sharyn. Don used to call us the petticoat government.

“But living in a house full of women did have some perks; he never had to wash the dishes!”

Phyllis, who celebrated her 90th birthday last October, found time in between raising children to volunteer with countless organisations including the CWA, Red Cross (volunteering at its Op Shop in Warrnambool) and was also on the parent’s club at the Framlingham Primary School.

“We were certainly busy as the children grew but we were all happy and healthy,” she said.

Phyllis’ health took a turn when, at the age of 37, she was diagnosed with leukemia.

“Don’s brother was a doctor at the time and I remember him telling us that my age was my biggest asset,” she said.

“And he was probably right. We just got on with things,

I had a husband and children who needed me and I was determined to get home to them.”

Phyllis underwent chemotherapy at the Alfred Hospital in Prahran, making the weekly journey to Melbourne for around 18 months.

“It was certainly a tough time for us all but we got through it,” she said.

“Our youngest was about to start school and our eldest daughter was off to high school so I had things to do at home.

“These days we’re very fortunate to have a cancer centre

right here in Warrnambool.”

Don and Phyllis moved to their current home in Dennington almost 20 years ago and are now content to enjoy a quieter life surrounded by family and friends.

“Apart from having a cleaner come in once a week, we’re still pretty independent,” Phyllis said.

“I still love to cook our meals and enjoy crocheting in front of the TV.”

They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary (and Don’s 95th birthday) at a special lunch at City Memorial earlier this week.

Phyllis and Don Vaughan have this week celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Pedestrian crossing for Otway Road

PEDESTRIAN safety on Otway Road is about to improve with construction now underway on a new raised pedestrian crossing.

The first project identified in the East Warrnambool Local Area Traffic Management Plan (LATM) is now under way, with construction on a new raised pedestrian crossing on Otway Road.

Work began earlier this week on the crossing, between Ilex Avenue and the rail bridge.

The East Warrnambool LATM was adopted by council in October 2025 and was shaped by input from more than 300 residents, students and organisations.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the project would improve safety at a busy location while also marking an important step in delivering on the recently adopted plan.

“It’s an increasingly busy road with about 7,000 vehicle movements a day, so a safe crossing point will be a big help,” he said.

“This is the first project from the East Warrnambool LATM to be constructed, which is really great to see.

“We worked with the community on the LATM and identified upgrades, big and small, that will help make the area safer and easier for people to get around.

“The Otway Road crossing is a good example of a project that is ready to go and able to deliver immediate benefits for the community.”

Cr Blain said council had secured $120,000 from the Victorian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Streets program, with council contributing approximately $30,000.

“Thank you to the state government for helping fund this important project,” he said.

“Some of the larger projects identified in the LATM, such as the Nicholson and Flaxman intersection and the Hopkins and Marfell intersection, need further investigation and substantially more funding before they can proceed, but they remain high priorities.”

The Otway Road crossing also lies on the route of the proposed Deakin Link shared path along the rail corridor.

Witnesses sought to e-bike collision

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a collision in Warrnambool last month.

Dashcam vision shows an e-bike rider crashing into a vehicle on Raglan Parade at 5.45pm on Monday, March 23.

It is believed the rider came from Parker Street and caused damage to the front passenger-side panel of the car.

He then left the scene without

speaking to the driver of the car.

The rider is perceived to be Caucasian, approximately 160cm tall, medium build, black hair and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top that said ‘play for keeps’ and a black and white helmet.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has footage or anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an online confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

“We still don’t have a timeframe on the trail itself as it would require funding support from other levels of government, but this crossing is a step forward,” Cr Blain said. Work is expected to take approximately six weeks.

It is anticipated this section of Otway Road/Flaxman Street will operate with a single lane of alternating traffic, with portable traffic lights on site, for the next four weeks.

The southern exit of Ilex Avenue will also be closed for the duration of the project, although traffic will still be able to enter Ilex Avenue from Flaxman Street.

“We’ve timed the works to make use of the school holiday period, but the alternating lanes will still be in place for the first two weeks of term two,” Cr Blain said.

“Thank you in advance for your patience.”

Koroit County flag to

THE tiny village with an Irish heartbeat has taken another step to enhance its claim as Australia’s most Irish town.

Ahead of its famed Irish Festival on May 1-3, Koroit has claimed the title of ‘Koroit - the 33rd County.’

And to lock that honour in, Koroit has come up with its very own Irish County flag.

Flags and the Koroit Irish Festival have long lived together - each year the 32 Irish County flags fly proudly in the town.

They stoke Irish pride in all as they march down the main street in all their glory for the festival’s street procession.

And this year, there’ll be a 33rd flag flying.

“As a festival and as a town we are just so proud of our Irish heritage,” festival committee member Jess Moloney said.

“I’m relatively new to the town and the festival but that community pride and the Irishness draws you in immediately.

“It’s an amazing feeling and I think that’s what makes the festival such a fun and happy place to be.

“And all the committee are volunteers, it’s a big job but a badge of honour at the same time.”

The 2026 festival will be the 30th staging of the annual event, with patrons expected to swell Koroit’s population from 2000 to 5000.

The festival will feature great Irish music, but is also known for its quirky and everyone-can-join-in activities.

These include a mad cow stampede

(a race in cow outfits), an en masse performance of the Rock the Boat dance, the Australian Danny Boy Championship, the Australian Split the G Championship, the Spud Trilogy - picking, peeling and eating competitions, the Flaming Folk Person of the Year, and more.

“Everyone loves the Irish, and everyone loves our festival because it is just so

much fun,” festival president Adele MacDonald said.

“Times are tough for many and we just want to be that place they come to and smile for the whole weekend.”

The festival ambassador for 2026 is Barry Brody, a lifelong Koroit man who has contributed greatly to the success of the festival.

Mr Brody is part of the Irish immigrant story, his parents leaving Ireland, only to find their own piece of home on the other side of the world.

“Barry is an absolute Koroit legend, we are so looking forward to honouring him,” Ms MacDonald said.

The Koroit Irish Festival will run from May 1-3.

Fun in the sun for families

THE sun was shining and the games were out as families headed to Lake Pertobe for a special Easter treat on Saturday.

The family fun day attracted a large crowd to the lawn area near the main playground, with children of all ages enjoying a range of fun games and activities.

From drawing and bubble making to puppet shows and an Easter egg hunt there was something for everyone.

Hosted by the Warrnambool and District Easter Arts Festival, the day proved one of community and connection.

“This is just wonderful,” Amy (a visitor from Geelong) said.

“Our family is camping at the caravan park here and we’re absolutely loving it. There’s so much to see and do in Warrnambool and this free event is amazing.”

Diability liaison officer

FOR many people with a disability, going to regular medical appointments can have a number of additional challenges and hurdles.

South West Healthcare is committed to making healthcare inclusive and accessible to all in the community with the introduction of a dedicated disability liaison officer on staff for those who need assistance navigating the health service.

Disability liaison officer Jason Kelly works closely with people with disability and their carers to ensure safe, inclusive and streamlined care experiences across hospital and community health, by ensuring patients have assistance with parking access and wayfinding, reading and understanding instructions, advocacy during appointments among other supports.

This free service is available at Warrnambool Base Hospital, Warrnambool Community Health, Camperdown Community Health and Camperdown Hospital.

Since his appointment in June 2025, Jason has supported over 150 people with disabilities and their families/carers access care at South West Healthcare.

Grace Kavanagh, primary carer for her son James, has been a vocal advocate for the service.

“I think it’s great now with Jason on board, he’s been amazing,” Grace said.

Being a primary carer comes with enormous responsibility and challenges, which is why having someone to ease the physical and emotional load is so important.

Following her experiences as a carer, Grace has become a passionate advocate for inclusion throughout workplaces, communities and conversations.

She believes respect starts with simple actions.

This includes individual care plans that are

empathetic to a person’s needs, fears and preferences.

“You don’t have to yell at people with disabilities, they can hear you and if someone is non-verbal, talk to them directly,” she said.

“They understand everything you say. People often ignore them, but they know and feel everything.”

Grace said Jason (Kelly) had written a care plan so when James does have to go to hospital, he takes it to the care team so they know exactly what he needs.

“It’s quick and easy to read and makes such a difference,” she said.

“It’ll say things like you’ve got to put the seat belts on him. James has a mouth guard that’s cemented in and he’s included that –that it’s cemented in, it doesn’t come out.

“He also hates the suction tip, so you’ve got to put a soft one in. Jason has put all this information in there and as soon as he knows James is in hospital, he’ll just hand it over.

“James was in hospital recently, and I had the flu so I couldn’t visit him. Jason went to see James every day and he messaged me to say he was doing well.”

For Grace, sleepless nights are a regular reality.

“Some days I’m just exhausted. I just need sleep. It’s very challenging when you’ve got to get up in the middle of the night to assist James,” she said.

Jason, with 25 years’ experience in disability advocacy, is driven by giving back to his community.

“I just love what I do, it’s a privilege to advocate for people with disability, and support communication of their needs to medical teams to ensure they have the best healthcare experience possible”.

If you or someone you know would like support accessing disability care at South West Healthcare, you can self-refer to the disability liaison service by calling 0478 258 117.

Photo competition on again

PHOTOGRAPHY enthusiasts are encouraged to look through their lenses and capture the varied and raw nature of breastfeeding for this year’s ‘Breastfeeding: No Filter’ photo competition.

Following great success last year, the photography competition and exhibition (organised by the Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre) returns next month and organisers are hoping to see a large number of entries. The competition aims to educate, normalise and encapsulate the breastfeeding journey.

It is hoped images will highlight breastfeeding while providing a platform for local professional and amateur

artists to showcase their talents.

In 2024 the Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre committee was looking for different ways to increase awareness, educate and celebrate breastfeeding – and this competition ticks all those boxes.

“It’s a great way to work with local artists and use imagery to educate and normalise children’s feeding,” committee member Barb Glare said.

“As a non-profit organisation that receives no annual funding, we hope this new element will be a fun way to shed light on breastfeeding and educate the community about the centre.”

The competition will have three categories and three major prizes - professional, amateur and a people’s choice award.

Both the professional and amateur awards will be announced at the opening of the exhibition at the Lighthouse Theatre at 5.30pm on Wednesday, May 20. People will decide on the people’s choice award, with the opportunity to vote in person at the opening or online. The winner of this category will be announced online on Monday, June 1.

The exhibition will be open to the public during theatre operating hours, allowing people to view the artwork before voting.

Applications will close on Friday, May 15.

The exhibition at the theatre will run until Sunday, May 31.

For information on how to enter, prizes and dates, visit warrnamboolbreastfeedingcentre.com.au

School petitions for new sports facility

PARENTS and students from Warrnambool College are campaigning for a new indoor sporting facility for their school.

They say that a new double court facility would ensure the continued success of their well-regarded Sporting Pathways Program.

“Warrnambool College is the largest government school in our entire region, and we deserve an indoor sports stadium with sufficient space for our school’s needs,” student representative on the school council, Monty Irving, said.

“Our current indoor sporting space is getting old and is not big enough for the number of PE classes at our school.

“There is also no indoor space which can fit all students for a whole school assembly. At the moment we either have to have assemblies outdoors, or students have to be split across two different spaces which is not ideal.”

Parents and students on the school council are disappointed that the Department of Education has not provided any funding for a new facility, despite the school consistently raising it as an issue for at least 15 years.

As a result they have decided to speak out themselves in an attempt to get a new sporting facility.

“We don’t think it is fair that our school is the only one without a double basketball court sized sports facility,” Monty said.

“A new indoor sporting facility would not only be great for the Sporting Pathways Program students, it would benefit the whole school.

“It would also be available outside of school hours to community groups, providing two extra courts for the regular basketball or volleyball competitions and tournaments.”

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

The group has organised a petition to the Minister for Education requesting funding for a new facility.

To date, the petition has been signed by more than 200 people from the school community, including students, parents and other supporters.

The group has delivered the petition to Member for

Technical investigation progressing at Port Fairy pool facility

The technical inve igation into the Port Fairy pool facility is progressing as planned, with detailed on-site assessments nearing completion, ahead of a nal report scheduled to be tabled at the May 2026 Ordinary Council Meeting.

Community members may have noticed increased activity and equipment noise at the site in recent weeks.

Speciali consultants have been undertaking live te ing of key sy ems within the facility, including pool pumping and ltration infra ructure, to fully under and their condition and performance.

As part of the inve igation, consultants are also undertaking intrusive inspections of the building, including removing sections of roo ng and cladding to assess the ructural integrity of the facility and identify the extent and causes of deterioration.

The inve igation is designed to provide Council with a comprehensive under anding of the condition of all major components of the facility - including ructural elements, plant and equipment, and compliance requirements - to inform future decisionmaking.

Mayor, Cr Jordan Lockett said the detailed nature of the inve igation was critical to ensuring Council has clear, evidence-based information.

“This is a thorough and methodical process. We will take the time to fully under and the condition of the facility before making any decisions about its future,” said Cr Lockett.

“We under and that the community is intere ed in the inve igation work, however we remind community members to be respectful to Council a and contractors whil carrying out inve igation work.”

Aquatic Infrastructure funding support advocacy to Federal and State Governments Council acknowledges the importance of aquatic facilities to the Moyne Shire community and notes that funding support was not included in our 5 priority projects for the 2026 Victorian State Election.

Mayor Lockett said this was a rategic decision about pursuing funding support at the right level of government and at the right time.

“To apply for any government funding Council mu provide a rong case backed by evidence. Speci c projects mu be “shovel-ready”.

At this age Council does not know the full condition of the Port Fairy pool facility, what works might be required, and how much they would co .”

“When the full report on the technical inve igation into the Port Fairy pool facility is presented to Councillors and the public at the May 2026 Ordinary Council Meeting, next eps can be considered.”

“At the same time, Council is working towards the completion of the Moyne Aquatic Facilities Strategy, which will use an evidence-based approach to inform Council’s long-term planning, inve ment, management, and delivery of aquatic services across the Shire.”

“In the meantime, we are raising pool funding as a critical issue with all the local members and mini ers we are meeting, at both State and Federal levels of government,” said Cr Lockett.

“We have also endorsed motions calling for dedicated pool funding programs to the Municipal Association of Victoria’s State Council meeting in late May 2026, and the Au ralian Local Government Association’s upcoming National General Assembly in June 2026.”

the Minister for Education.

“Our school deserves to have a sports facility that the whole community can enjoy and be proud of,” Monty said.

“The wellness centre complements our coffee shop, Sidro Chambers, which opened in January and is open seven days a week.”

Plans are also underway for a full-service restaurant to open in June.

“We have created these spaces with the Port Fairy community in mind.

“Together, they encourage balance of movement, coffee, food and social connection. We plan to grow and evolve with our local community.”

SALEYARD REPORT

Hamilton Agents yarded 14,000 lambs (200 fewer) and 3,300 sheep (also 200 fewer) this week compared with last week’s offering.

It was another very good quality yarding with shorn lambs displaying excellent finish and shape at the top end.

A good supply of lambs suitable for returning to the paddock or to feed on was available at the lower end of the market.

McFadden wins Easter Trail

A SECOND-place finish in last Sunday’s A-Main event at Premier Speedway was enough to earn James McFadden the 2026 Easter Sprintcar series title.

McFadden was top of the points table at the end of the three-night trail on Sunday, closely followed by Brock Hallett and Tate Frost.

Spectators at the Allansford track on Sunday were treated to some tight racing as drivers battled to earn a spot in the A-Main.

Jock Goodyer took line honours in the main event, ahead of a fast-finishing Dane Court, with McFadden rounding out the podium.

A highly successful season on the clay saw Hallett take home a $10,000 cheque after claiming the 2025/26 Sprintcar Track Championship at Premier – his second in his career after claiming the title back in 202/23. Last Sunday night’s final meeting on the Premier Speedway race calendar attracted a huge crowd, eager to see some close racing. And they weren’t disappointed.

The prestigious Super Rod Cup once again proved a great spectacle, with Stan Marco Jnr taking the chequered flag after a headto-head run to the line with Jacob Pitcher.

In a heart-stopping incident, Pitcher endured a dramatic final-lap contact which saw his car airborne as it crossed the line.

With the red lights activated after the chequered flag had been waved (the remainder of the field had not crossed the line and the race was declared complete), results reverted to the previous completed lap, promoting Shannon Meekins to third.

In a social media post earlier this week, it was said that Pitcher was recovering in a Melbourne hospital with a punctured lung and three fractured vertebrae in his neck but was in high spirits and was already talking of a return to racing once 100 per cent recovered.

Thoughts are with him for a speedy recovery.

The annual fireworks show and an appearance by the Easter Bunny added to the family-friendly atmosphere of the night.

“This is an ideal opportunity for some school holiday fun and, who knows, it may be the start of a long association with table tennis.”

Table tennis set to recommence

THE big news out of the annual general meeting of the Orford and District Table Tennis Association is that the youngsters have stood up.

Sportsperson’s Night for WRAD Health

CURRENT dual AFLW premiership coach

Darren Crocker will be special guest at a Sportsperson’s Night in Warrnambool tonight (Friday).

Crocker, a former AFL premiership player with 165 games under his belt, will no doubt provide an entertaining recount of his involvement at AFL level.

The evening has been organised as a fundraising effort for WRAD Health.

WRAD Health is a not-for-profit, community based health service providing vital bulk-billing medical, mental health, and alcohol and other drug supports across the region.

Every day this service supports individuals and families through its bulk-billing GP clinic at Handbury Medical Suites; mental health counselling and dual diagnosis support; alcohol and other drug treatment,

harm reduction and recovery programs; and allied health and wellbeing services.

It also offers pharmacotherapy and medical care, along with family education and peer support programs.

Funds raised through the Sportsperson’s Night will go directly towards sustaining and strengthening these essential frontline supports.

This includes clinical equipment, program resources, and service delivery tools not fully funded through existing funding streams.

The Sportsperson’s Night will be held in the Carmichael Rooms at City Bowls CLub on Cramer Street from 7pm.

The evening will also include supper and raffle prizes. For tickets and further information contact Chris Kendall on 5564 5777.

The association now has a Facebook page, moving into the 21st century, sorry the electric score boards and heated umpire’s chairs are still a way off - so, if you can google you will find the latest news from Orford thanks to Jaden Clapp.

In another move Kelly Wortley was elected to assist Andrew McGrath with all the new computer payments/reports required by Table Tennis Victoria. Andrew will continue his unbroken tenure as secretary, both he and David Rowbottom were returned as secretary and president.

The association is holding a Come and Try night on Wednesday April 15, 7.30pm at the Orford Hall. This is another way to encourage young and those not so young to play table tennis.

Bats will be available to use so no equipment purchase is needed.

Any new residents to the district are also encouraged to come along, especially if having played

table tennis previously.

Players will be there to give coaching on the night; cost is $2 per player.

Due to player shortage Tarrone will not enter a team this year.

Macarthur’s Drendel family has put their hand up to return, playing as a team after being part of Glengleeson in past years.

While the Warrnambool Vikings have spread their wings to all points of the globe as the international team, they are in recess for 2026.

Koroit has made arrangements to play in the Koroit Scout Hall, bringing table tennis back to that venue after an absence of 20 plus years; hopefully some will be available to play.

The opening tournament will be held on Wednesday, April 22 from 7.30pm at the Orford Hall.

Anyone interested in playing is asked to place their names before the start of pennant on Wednesday, April 29, 7.30pm at the venue of the home team.

Current venues include Orford Hall, Warrnambool table tennis stadium, Koroit Scout Hall and Attunga (played in Warrnambool). In the past Hawkesdale, Woolsthorpe, Port Fairy, Bessiebelle and several others played in well-ventilated wool sheds as home venues.

Success on and off the clay

Incoming general manager of Premier Speedway Rikki Stewart (left) with vice-president Geoff Rounds.

NIGHT three of the Easter Trail last Sunday signalled the end of what has been hailed a successful 2025/26 season for Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway.

The Warrnambool track has hosted 11 race meetings (including two, three-day events), with the season running from last November through to April 5, and has welcomed some of the best Sprintcars, Modified Sedans, Street Stocks, Super Sedans, Formula 500s, Speedcars, Wingless, Super Rods and juniors.

“Our season has been outstanding; the positivity and the overall vibe at the club is amazing,” incoming general manager at Premier, Rikki Stewart said.

“Easter Sunday was fantastic for us as a club. It was the perfect ending to an amazing season here in Warrnambool.

“The crowd was solid and the competitor numbers were solid despite the current fuel crisis.”

Stewart said the club was grateful for the support of the general public, as well as each competitor, for their support throughout the year.

“We came together as a club and steered the ship to another successful season at Sungold Stadium,” he said.

“Having started the season without a general manager, it was heartening to see the amount of support we received; people understood that we were in a transition period and supported us along the way.

“Crowd numbers were up on each

meeting this year and the racing was superb.”

Stewart said he believed all the “little changes that were made in the off season have improved our product massively” and the team will continue to build off the back of what was a successful season at Premier Speedway.

“Moving forward, we’re looking to continue building the positive vibe, making the venue a happy place and somewhere that families and competitors want to attend,” he said.

“We will continue to improve on our race surface; this season has been as consistent as I can remember in my time at the club.”

According to Stewart, the club now aims to install a permanent, large screen TV

at the venue which will offer replays and clear footage for everyone at the venue. They are also looking at adding extra corporate boxes, giving the public an opportunity to utilise a box on race nights.

“We have several projects listed but some of these may take a few years to complete,” he said.

“We’re looking at ways to increase our overall capacity in the venue, making it safer while offering our paying public a better experience.”

Stewart said he was grateful for the opportunity to become the next general manager of Premier Speedway and was excited for what the future holds.

The club will host its end-of-season dinner at the Warrnambool Racecourse on Saturday, May 16.

Community mourns Premier stalwart

CHARLIE Burley’s name will forever remain synonymous with Premier Speedway.

A founding member of the club, Charlie passed away last weekend at the age of 86.

Described by many as one of Speedway’s most likeable and popular identities, the former track commentator at Premier was often seen at the track alongside wife Jean.

Charlie joined the club in 1958, with Jean joining

him five or six years later.

Speaking with the Weekly in 2024, Charlie said his first Classic, in 1973, was as a driver.

“I didn’t go all that well but it was a lot of fun and something I’ll always remember,” he recalled at the time.

When Charlie stopped racing he became an announcer and proudly carried that role for well over 20 years.

Charlie and Jean are both life members of Premier Speedway, having spent the majority

of their years dedicated to volunteering at the venue.

During last Sunday night’s final race meeting for the season, Charlie was honoured with a minute’s silence and a special tribute.

“We will forever be grateful for Charlie’s dedication and commitment to Premier Speedway and we pay our respects to the former voice of Premier – the man with the mic – our thoughts and sincere condolences to Jean and the entire Burley family.”
