A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The 2025/26 season closes with a mystery. In Cheyenne Scott’s Wolf Cull, we follow five young women into the woods, drawn by a shared dream. What unfolds is a spiritual, metaphysical journey through darkness and danger, toward self-knowledge and self-empowerment. Staged in the round, Wolf Cull is also an immersive and thrilling theatrical experience. We are proud to be giving this work its premiere on the Pavilion stage.

We’re also very excited that Cheyenne has been able to welcome The Indigenous Resurgence Project into the space. The art you are enjoying in the lobby has been brought to us by the Stínesten Gallery, a space created by the IRP for the support and mentorship of Indigenous artists and the creation and display of their work. The practice of storytelling, in whatever form, is a powerful tool for self reflection, for learning how to be in community, and how to be one’s integral self. We are honoured to have the work of these artists enriching the live theatre experience during the run of Wolf Cull.

And as our 50th Anniversary season winds down, our attention turns to the excitement ahead! WCT’s 51st season, and the first that I have programmed for Kamloops, will open with a smash musical on the Sagebrush Stage. I’ve loved Little Shop of Horrors forever, and I’m thrilled to be leading a brilliant team bringing this camp classic back! The rest of the season pulls together stories from across the country, written or adapted by artists representing the diverse voices that make up our Canadian landscape. We have new work from Ins Choi, Rachel Mutombo, and Diane Flacks, and we’re bringing back some favourites from Tomson Highway and Farren Timoteo. And at the Pavilion we’re offering young families a couple of unique theatrical experiences. First a classic book comes to life in a fully interactive adventure, then a home grown creative team will bring the magic of Narnia to our stage. Pick up a brochure, or go to wctlive.ca to explore everything on offer, and book your subscriptions early! Western Canada Theatre belongs to you Kamloops, and you help us make this a place where our stories grow.

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES

I was inspired by hunting in Greenstone with my father and mother over the many years I have lived in Kamloops. On our first day of rehearsal we went up to the hunting grounds so that the full team could experience the impact of this place and carry it forward into our work. I hope that you, dear audience, recognize the elements of the land and its influence and relationship to this pack, from the dangerous river, to remnants of wildfires.

In connection to the predators and prey of that land, I wanted to explore a future where we could address and conquer the “creature” that lives in each of us. Systemically there have been real efforts to devalue and exterminate Indigenous Womxn. This is similar to our perception and culling of wolves. This play is my love letter to Indigenous womxn and a desire for us to be everything we want to be including wild, rebellious, leaders, strong, curious, and feral.

I am so incredibly proud and honored by the bravery of this team who have joined me in the unknown of developing new work. We have endeavoured to bring you a story with integrity and an artwork unlike what you may have ever seen before. Every movement, sound, set piece, and lighting state have been made with such heart. Please take a moment to appreciate the details of the trees, stumps, floor, and branches. We invite you to immerse yourself into the world of this play through our partnership with Indigenous Resurgence Project who has built gorgeous visual art pieces in response to the play and its themes of empowerment and community.

YOUR COMMUNITY. YOUR THEATRE. YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS.

For 50 years, Western Canada Theatre has been shaped by the community that surrounds it.

From the beginning—when a local high school teacher’s passion for theatre and the persistent support of parents and teachers within the community sparked what would become WCT—to today’s vibrant productions, this company has always been built right here in Kamloops. When you support Western Canada Theatre, you’re doing more than helping put shows on stage. You’re helping sustain a creative community.

Your donation supports local playwrights, like Laura Michelle, whose play Echoes of the Homesick Heart premiered with WCT and lead to the creation of a bursary supporting local students pursuing post-secondary studies in Secwepemectsin. It supports emerging storytellers like Cheyenne Scott—whose new work, Wolf Cull, is bringing powerful local voices to our stage—plus directors, designers, technicians and more, many of whom live and work right here in our community.

You bring opportunities for local youth to discover theatre through youth ensembles, camps, and educational programming that inspire the next generation of Canadian artists while nurturing confidence and a sense of belonging both on and off the stage.

And behind the scenes, your support helps bring productions to life through local craftsmanship. Sets are designed and built here. Costumes are created here. Props are sourced locally, whenever able. All made possible through partnerships with communityminded businesses like Home Hardware and Cloverdale Paint—companies that share our belief in investing locally.

As the largest professional theatre company in BC’s Interior, Western Canada Theatre also plays an important role in the broader local economy. Our productions bring artists from across Canada to Kamloops—many discovering the city for the first time—while audiences travel from surrounding communities to experience live theatre here. Those visits support local hotels, restaurants, and businesses, helping the arts contribute to the vitality of our entire community.

For 50 years, Western Canada Theatre has been part of the cultural fabric of Kamloops. With your help, we can ensure the next generation of artists, audiences, and storytellers continue to find a home here.

Help us grow the next 50 years of theatre in our community.
