ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I’m writing these notes at the halfway point of our rehearsal process. We spent this week working with a Circus Acrobat who has been training us to jump from heights, a Fight Director who is creating amazing stunts, a Choreographer who has been cooking up some fancy dance moves, and a Musical Director who has been teaching the cast to sing all the intricate, beautiful songs. It is safe to say that this production requires our cast to use every different skill they have (and many new ones!).

To me, this production is everything that is great about theatre. It is fantastic, fun, innovative storytelling, which embraces theatre’s simple, transformative magic and asks you, the audience, to invest your imagination, your belief, and yourself in this story. The actors work as an ensemble, becoming hundreds of different characters and creating all the environments and magic themselves. And what a cast we have! This production is packed with some of the finest actors from across Canada.

I’m also incredibly proud to say that this production you’re about to watch is the Canadian Premiere! WCT is the first theatre in Canada to get the rights to this production after it’s very successful run on Broadway. Proving once again, that if you want to see great theatre in Canada, you need to come to Kamloops! (Tell all your friends on the coast to race up here to get a ticket – because they can’t see it in Vancouver!)

I have two young sons (6 and 3 years old) who love the story of Peter Pan. I wanted to program a story they would love. I can’t wait to watch them watch this production. As a dad, I’m captivated by Peter’s ability to hold on to his youthful hopes and dreams and imagination in this story. I hope my boys never lose that. I hope I never lose that. As Peter says, “To have faith, is to have wings.”

BIOGRAPHIES Nick Apivor Percussion At WCT: Percussion: Les Misérables, Fiddler on the Roof, Nunsense; Composer/Sound Design: Scaredy Cats in Love.

Nick received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria in 1986. In the Classical/ New Music World, he has played with the Victoria Symphony, Vancouver Island Symphony, and The Drosera Ensemble and recorded with Grammy nominated composer Paul Dolden. As a Jazz Vibraphonist, he has performed with the N.O.W. Orchestra, Out of the Woods, Mimosa, and many other groups.

Nick has played in over 35 Music Theatre Productions, including The Vancouver Playhouse’s 2008 production of The Drowsy Chaperone and the 2009 Canadian Tour of this show, which ran at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. For the past 20 years, Nick has immersed himself in a variety of Latin Musical Styles, performing and recording with the JunoNominated group Rumba Calzada, Ache Brazil, The World Jive Big Band, John Gilliat Group, and many others. He has also performed with the Canadian Tenors, saxophonist Kenny G., legendary singer Petula Clark, comedian Don Rickles, and the great Persian vocalist Dariush. Most recently Nick has toured with Canto-pop stars The Wynners.

BIOGRAPHIES Evan Buliung Black Stache At WCT: Debut.

Evan’s spent 9 Seasons with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. This year he played Titania, the Queen of the Fairies... from which he’ll be drawing much inspiration this evening no doubt (he’ll be heading back to Stratford for a 10th Season to play Pericles) and 4 seasons with the Shaw Festival, playing many serious roles, a few comedic roles and more than a handful of spear carrying roles in his misspent youth. As well, he’s had the honour of working for Soulpepper in Toronto, playing an Austrian, a Brit and a drunk in Idiot’s Delight, Farther West and Long Day’s Journey Into Night. He’s worked for the Mirvish organization in Toronto on more than one occasion, playing a hero of all things, Aragorn, in Lord of the Rings, the musical (yes there were singing dwarves) and another evil doer, Khashoggi, in We Will Rock You. This is his first time in Kamloops. Love it! A beautiful city in a beautiful part of the world. Hope you enjoy the show as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together for you!

BIOGRAPHIES Cayman Duncan Sound Designer At WCT: Les Misérables, Never Shoot A Stampede Queen, Educating Rita and Betrayal .

Cayman is excited to be a part of WCT’s production of Peter and the Starcatcher. He is a founding member, playwright and actor for the Kamloops-based Saucy Fops Theatre Company, which has performed for the past 13 years in various cities and fringe festivals across Canada. Cayman is also a proud Dad to one-year-old twins and would like to thank Adalyn, Easton and their mom, Terri, for all the love and for enjoying theatre as much as Dad does.

Valerie Easton Choreographer At WCT: Choreographer: Closer Than Ever, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Choreographer/Assistant Director: Fiddler on the Roof; and Actor: Anne in Anne of Green Gables.

Valerie has worked across the country with such theatre companies as The Arts Club, The Vancouver Playhouse, Neptune Theatre, Bard on the Beach, & others.

Nicholas Harrison Fight Director At WCT: Silent Chap, Les Misérables, Merlin and Peter Pan. Other: Nicholas trained as an actor in London, England, at the London Academy of Performing Arts and has a Masters in Directing from the University of Victoria and a PhD from the University of British Columbia. He is a veteran improviser with the award winning Vancouver Theatre Sports League and is a well-known radio personality in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. In addition to being a former member of the Waking Crew on JRFM 93.7, he was the morning show producer on CKZZ 95.3. He won the Canadian Gold Ribbon Award during his time at 95.3. He co-wrote A Twisted Christmas Carol and Sword Play, which were both nominated for Canadian Comedy Awards. He has been a Fight Director for several years and has choreographed hundreds of fights for live theatre, film and television. He has been the Fight Director at Bard on the Beach for over sixteen seasons and recently finished choreographing the fights for Vancouver Opera’s Stickboy, as well as directing The Government Inspector for Capilano University. Nicholas is presently developing a play (Boudicca) about the life and death of the Iceni warrior queen.

BIOGRAPHIES Stephen Jackman-Torkoff Ted At WCT: Debut.

Stephen is a recent graduate of the National Theatre School and has just finished his first season at the Shaw Festival appearing in Arms and the Man and The Charity that Began at Home. Stephen is overjoyed to be working on this magical play with a great group of people. He thanks his parents for instilling at a young age that his big dreams were possible.

Andrew is a Toronto-based actor, playwright, and creative director of Project: Humanity (www.projecthumanity.ca).

As a performer, he has worked with Canadian Stage, Catalyst Theatre, Buddies In Bad Times, Theatre Calgary, The Citadel, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and the Shaw Festival, among others.

Most recently: John in Cock (Studio 180), The Gay Heritage Project (Buddies/ GHP), Leaf Coneybear in Spelling Bee (Thousand Islands Playhouse), and John/ Eric/J in Passion Play (Outside the March/ Convergence/Sheep No Wool – Dora Award, Outstanding Ensemble). Andrew’s newest play, Small Axe, will premiere in January 2015, a co-production between Project: Humanity and The Theatre Centre. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta BFA(Acting) program.

Christine Leroux Apprentice Stage Manager At WCT: Driving Miss Daisy, Closer Than Ever, Les Misérables and High-Wire Festival.

Christine, a recent graduate from Thompson Rivers University, is very excited to be joining WCT as their apprentice for the season!

Past productions include Assistant Stage Manager for Alice in Wonderland and The Last of the Dragons (Project X Theatre); Stage Manager for Catch, Curse of the Starving Class and Gossip, and Actor in Bright. Apple.

Holly is thrilled to be onstage with these brilliant collaborators. Most recently, she performed in Educating Rita at the Arts Club in Vancouver. Earlier this year, she was nominated for a Dora Award for her performance in the Canadian premiere of Tribes (Theatrefront/Canadian Stage/ Theatre Aquarius). Originally from Toronto, Holly has worked with Tarragon Theatre, Canadian Stage, Factory Theatre, Soulpepper, Grand Theatre (London) and Neptune Theatre, among others. As an ensemble member of Theatrefront, she was nominated as a co-writer and performer for the international collaboration RETURN (The Sarajevo Project). Holly is currently developing an epic, circus-inspired play for which she just returned from a workshop in Brooklyn with a German wheel expert.

Amitai is a Vancouverbased actor and graduate from the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER A PREMIERE PREQUEL Prequels are technically sequels about events that happen before the initial story.

Origin stories have been a trope in our cultural landscape ever since Homer wrote Cypria, which could be viewed as a prequel to the Iliad.

To lovers of the horror genre this is a familiar concept. Among many others, there is A & E’s Bates Motel (depicting the childhood of Norman Bates from Psycho), Hannibal Lector’s many incarnations, and the must-see origin story of not one but two franchises, Alien VS Predator.

The Wizard of Oz, Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables, Godzilla, Planet of the Apes, X-Men, Star Wars, The Hobbit, Shrek, Batman and Zelda all have prequels. We love discovering more about our beloved (or love-to-hate) characters, because we know them well already, and it is thrilling to dig deeper, to see the genesis, to finally know how, and why.

You know who else has a prequel? Richard III and Henry VI . That’s right, Shakespeare wrote some prequels too.

Peter and the Starcatcher is one of five prequels to J.M. Barrie’s revered Peter Pan written

by Dave Barry (Pulitzer Prize winning humourist) and Ridley Pearson (best known as a mystery writer) that became a smash hit in 2004. It then became a play by Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) in 2012, garnering the most Tony nominations in history with nine and winning five. The film version is imminent.

Peter Pan’s popularity is undeniable – but since his creation (first as a play in 1904, then as a novel in 1911), he always has been well loved. There have been various adaptations, ranging from pantomimes to a silent movie version in 1924. The first full-length film was created by no less than Walt Disney himself in 1953, and the Broadway musical (1954), starring Mary Martin as Peter, played several times over the next few years on NBC and cemented the show in global pop culture history. In December 2014 it will be shown on TV live again with Allison Williams (Girls) in the title role. The fact that Peter is typically played by a woman – and the ensemble this evening boasts only one woman (the luminous Holly Lewis as Molly) – is another conversation so nuanced as to be worthy of its own notes. *

A heartwarming fact – Barrie bequeathed the rights to Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London England, and Disney paid ‘a significant amount’ to the hospital to make the movie. The rights still survive to this day – the boy who would never grow up has made it possible for hundreds, if not thousands of children to grow up and have children of their own.
