Behind the Scenes at Pines Dinner Theater During Wild Wintertime

When you spend an evening at the Pines Dinner Theatre, 448 N. 17th St., as a member of the audience, your mind is on the food and the show. And that’s as it should be.

But those performances belie the many hours of behindthe-scenes-effort by the theater’s management and production team: Amber Blatt (box office manager, choreographer), Oliver Blatt (producer, director, choreographer, set and lighting design), Stacy Bechtel (musical director and house manager) and Stacey Yoder (producer, props and costume design, casting director). And those are just their official responsibilities.

For the holiday season, The Pines’ latest productions are A Pines Country Christmas and Santa’s Christmas Sing-along Celebration. Bringing a show to life begins long before the season’s first production premieres, Bechtel said.

She and Blatt develop a “wish list” to frame-out the upcoming season. “We call it a ‘wish list’ because we can’t always do the shows we want; we might be unable to get the rights for one or another, so we need to have alternates,” said Bechtel. “Sometimes, we include an all-original show, and that’s when we decide whether it will be a revue, a ‘book show,’ or another form.

For original shows, I write and arrange the music, and Oliver writes the lyrics.”

When the shows are locked in, Yoder works on casting by using a master list of each character needed for the season. She relies on a pool of local actors, as well as some Lehigh Valley transplants who live in New York. She also attends StrawHat Auditions, a three-day session in Manhattan. There, actors, singers, and dancers audition for a roomful of casting directors from cruise lines, smaller regional theaters, and other outlets. Each director chooses prospects and

sets up callbacks for individual meetings with the desired performers.

Hired cast members also fill out personal measurement sheets.

“That’s so we can begin meeting our costume needs,” Bechtel said. Many times, the theatre combines various items in its “costume closet,” often adding proper accessories and tailoring.

“We have to think outside the box sometimes, because of budget and time constraints,” she said.

When necessary, the Pines will rent or purchase what’s needed.

Color is a key factor, even in shows that call for ordinary streetwear.

“Costumes must fit the show’s color scheme, and the colors must look right under stage lighting. If we need to create a costume, we test the fabric under those lights before we begin sewing,” said Bechtel.

While large venues may have a dedicated pit band, the Pines selects musicians for each show, based on their availability and ability to play theater music.

Bechtel said that the style has particular demands, and someone who’s not experienced in it might not be a good fit. She also works separately with the players to 2 WEST END LIVING WINTER 2019

review the arrangements and noting their entrance cues, cutoffs, transitions, and repeated sections in the score.

Then cast rehearsals begin. And it’s a no-nonsense approach—the cast and musicians go from icecold to stage-ready in just two weeks. During the first week, the cast learns the order of the show and Amber Blatt’s choreography and the songs. “By the end of the first week, everyone can get through act I and act II. Their performance might be a bit wobbly, but Oliver and I can get a sense of the show’s arc, seeing what works and what might need improvement,” Bechtel said.

Over that weekend, the production team lays out the next week’s schedule, concentrating on specific segments of the show. During week two, the cast rehearses with costumes, stage lights, sound effects, and the full band, as Bechtel and Blatt continue tightening, tweaking, and polishing the overall production.

At last, the cast and musicians are ready for the public stage (well, almost). “We always have a ‘preview night,’ which is our final dress rehearsal,” Bechtel said.

“Our staff serves as the audience, so the actors and musicians can gauge their reactions. Some shows require audience participation, and the staff plays right along.” There’s an added benefit: Because the staff has seen the show, they’re able to provide patrons with detailed answers to their questions.

And then the curtain rises.

The crew has one more task at this busy time of year, and that is adorning the interior and exterior of the Pines with decorated trees, ribbons, bows, and other festive holiday trimmings that welcome their guests.

Developing two overlapping productions is a major undertaking, but “That’s the magic of theater,” Bechtel said. “We all work together to pull it off. New Openings Bring Food, Jewelry, and Baskets to the West End location for nearly 15 years,” said co-owner Timothy Statler, “and had planned to extensively renovate it. But when we learned that Counter Culture was vacating its space, we dropped our original plans and moved.” The arrangement allowed the jewelry store to maintain its existing workflow while the new space was prepped.

“People are completely blown away by our new location,” Statler said. “It’s more modern-looking— more light and brightness—but with some darker cabinetry for contrast. In addition, we have more counter space, more display area, and additional work space.

And that means our range of selections has expanded.”

Richard Perose, Statler’s former partner, retired last December, and Harsh Zaveri, owner of Zaveri Jewelers at 1403 N. Cedar Crest Blvd., joined the company. He’s a fourth-generation jeweler and graduate diamond gemologist

owned/operated eatery, recently opened at 2301 W. Liberty St., the site of the former Café Frais.

Lyell Scherline, co-owner of real estate development company The Scherline Group, said the restaurant offers high-quality food at reasonable prices. But he also hopes that it becomes a neighborhood gathering place for quiet conversation, off-campus studying, or taking a break from daily routines.

A portion of the property’s lower level will continue to operate as a self-storage facility, now called A-Town Self Storage, and there are plans to develop the upper floor.

But the makeover of the restaurant presented a challenge: no one involved had any experience in that business. So, the company turned to the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Department at Muhlenberg College. Two professors gave their students some real-world experience by assigning them to help develop the new eatery. “They were excited to get the students involved,” Scherline said. “We gave them some guidance: ‘What would you look for in an off-campus meeting spot?’ They worked in small groups and pitched their ideas to me.”

The result? “Our menu will include a few different salads, soups, sandwiches, and some other foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” Scherline said. “And they’ll be of very high quality.

Over time, we’ll develop a rotating menu, based on customer feedback.” Operations manager Matt Feehan said the goal is to offer quality that’s comparable to Panera or Chipotle.

Prices should appeal to students who are already on a meal plan, as well as for neighborhood residents. “We want people to get good food without breaking the bank,” Scherline said. It will also offer a mix of seating options— lounge furniture, counters, tables—suitable for various activities. “We were also recently

approved to add more table seating,” Scherline said.

Feehan added that Jay’s Local will feature an airy, open floor plan and an exposed kitchen. “We’ve also met with lots of local vendors to be our suppliers,” he said.

“We want to have a sustainable business model, as well as a stable environment for ourselves, our customers, and employees.

The West End is a growing area, culturally, and economically. And the area feels friendly. We’ve found it very welcoming to a new business. We plan to be here for the long haul, so we want to be a staple that grows as the community does,” he said.

“We’d dealt with Harsh for about 10 years and he supplied us with many castings, settings and other products,” Statler said. “His family is growing, and he wanted to get off the road, so the timing was just right. And Harsh’s family owns a jewelry manufacturing company, so we can buy materials directly, instead of through a wholesaler or other middleman.”

He said Timothy Zaveri differs from other jewelry retailers in two key ways: “The owners are always on-site, and you can deal with us directly. And we do all of our jewelry repairs ourselves, instead of sub-contracting them.”

Statler said customers will also see another familiar face when they stop in; Lisa Shoenberger, formerly of Boutique to Go, now handles sales duties.

Jenny’s Gift Baskets has moved into

the retail space formerly occupied

by The Sign of the Bear natural foods store at 514 N. St. Cloud St. “We wanted to increase our foot traffic,” said owner Cheri Pagliaro, “because we’re expanding our offerings beyond baskets. We’ll be carrying candles, soaps, sportsthemed items, even merchandise for pets. Our former location just wasn’t conducive to walk-in business.” (Of course, online and phone ordering are always available.)

Pagliaro said the shop will maintain its “industrial farmhouse” design sense, with antiques rescued from her grandmother’s barn for use as furniture and as display cases.

Much like florists, Jenny’s offers a range of standardized baskets, “but we assemble them individually at the store,” Pagliaro said. “And we really fill them up. Some places pad their baskets with straw or foam.

Jenny’s will continue to offer themed baskets, including spa products, kitchen goodies, healthy nuts, sports teams, chocolatecentric, salsas and others. Latest additions include beer buckets (featuring Stella Artois, Blue Moon, and Bronx Brewery IPA), a Bloody Mary kit (including locally distilled Kilimanjaro vodka) and wine baskets that include bottles produced by Walnutport’s Soaked Winery.

Basket prices vary widely, because there are so many options, but Pagliaro said they generally range from $10 to $350. The store will continue to provide local delivery (same-day, by request) as well as shipping anywhere in the country via UPS or the postal service.

Taking over the property represents a sort of homecoming for her. “I grew up in the West End, and went to Muhlenberg, Trexler and Allen,” she said. “My dad was a football coach at Trexler, and a guidance counselor at Raub, and my parents still live at 25th and Washington. I love the West End, because there’s just so much good stuff here.”

There’s another family connection as well – her son married restaurateur Fred Wert’s granddaughter!

‘Mom and Pop’ Groceries Once Populated the West End

When I was growing up in the 1950s and ‘60s and someone needed a few groceries, such as a loaf of bread or a quart of milk, there were many so-called “Mom and Pop” type grocery stores here in the West End to choose from— almost one per neighborhood.

Some people turned their garages into such stores. (I understand that this is no longer legal but it certainly was convenient.)

Growing up in the Nineteenth St. area, another convenience was the presence of two great supermarkets, both within walking distance of my home.

One was an A&P (formally known as The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company) built around 1943. It was located on the east side of Nineteenth

St. between Tilghman and Allen, where the Shanty on 19th now stands. If you remember the original Shanty, you may remember the large A&P sign that was part of the wall décor. The other neighborhood supermarket was an Acme built around 1950 and located on the southeast corner of Nineteenth and Allen.

When we needed a bag or two of groceries, my mother and I would simply walk down to one of the two stores. I remember having to open the doors into the buildings by hand, until the Acme installed an automatic door opener—a convenience we now take for granted. The A&P installed theirs not long after. The Acme sported grey doors, and the A&P had red ones. Since the buildings were built out to the sidewalk, the shopping carts had

to be kept inside the stores.

I remember the smell of the Eight O’Clock coffee at the A&P. Back then, you ordered your coffee at a counter, and it was ground for you on the spot. I also remember the old cash registers at both stores. Cashiers had to be careful when the drawers flew out to avoid getting hit in the stomach.

Of course, if we were buying a large amount of groceries, it was necessary to go by car. Neither store had massive parking lots like the supermarkets of today, but each had enough space for at least 20 cars. The A&P had additional parking across the street, in a lot now used by Volpe’s Sports Bar. In 1964, a new Acme was built at 16th and Liberty Streets, still within walking distance for us.

The front of the old 19th Street Acme became the Merchants Bank; later, other banks occupied the spot including Ambassador and now Quakertown National Bank. In the back, several businesses came and went, including a CVS drug store. CVS was there from the 1980s until the year 2000, when it moved into the 16th and Liberty building after the Acme closed altogether. Salvatore

Ruffino’s much-expanded restaurant replaced CVS in 2000; today, that location is home to the Sleepy Cat Urban Winery, the Udder Bar ice cream store, and Truth hair salon.

The A&P closed in 1972, when Jack Dankel purchased the building and turned it into a used car showroom. Around 1979, Don and Diane Saylor relocated their Shanty restaurant from Lafayette and Allen Streets (where Henry’s Salt of the Sea now operates).

When the Shanty closed in 2005, the building was vacant until TC Salon occupied it for less than a year. After extensive renovations, the Shanty on 19th opened; other current tenants there are the School of Rock and the Lawrence Roth salon.

The “Mom and Pop” grocery stores are virtually gone now.

The West End still has some great supermarkets such as Giant, Weis and Wegmans, but how many of them are within walking distance?

In the ‘50s and ‘60s walking to the supermarket was the norm.

Here in the West End we were fortunate to have had two of them—both in one neighborhood and on one street. n

Strengthening the Heart of Allentown Less than two years ago, St. Luke’s University Health Network acquired Sacred Heart Hospital, and began rejuvenating the iconic Allentown institution. “Since the merger, St. Luke’s has committed to investing $31 million in improvements to Sacred Heart,” said Frank J. Ford, president of the St. Luke’s Sacred Heart campus. “All the great care that we provide through our network is now available to centercity residents.”

The physical plant is undergoing a makeover that includes a renovated lobby, new flooring, spruced-up bathrooms, improved HVAC performance, and a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the parking facility, said Rev. John M. Gibbons, pastor of the namesake church.

The merger also means that Sacred Heart patients now have access to St. Luke’s broad range of specialists. “A unified medical staff means all of our patients receive a consistent level of quality of care,” Ford said. At the same time, some of Sacred Heart’s existing programs—such as its vascular access program—will complement the St. Luke’s network.

Rev. Gibbons dismissed concerns that Sacred Heart’s traditional Catholic policies would disappear as a result of the takeover. “An essential aspect of our agreement was that Sacred Heart would continue to uphold its Catholic values and St. Luke’s has stood by that.”

“Along with their commitment to preserving Sacred Heart’s original identity and Catholic values, St. Luke’s is clearly committed to strengthening our community,” Gibbons adds. “They’re working hard to bridge inner-city social challenges and improving the

health of our community. They’re helping to transform our inner city,” he continues.

Two behavioral health inpatient units have moved from Bethlehem to center-city Allentown, for a total of five units; its 109 beds far exceed the original 67. “Those two units are completely new,” Ford said, “and we will bring the original three up to our overall standards.”

A behavioral health residency program is developing at Sacred Heart, too. “We expect to train five residents each year and help place them in the local community,” Ford said.

Maintaining community health requires more than drugs and surgery. “Social determinants, such as housing, education, employment, and other factors, can impact our health,” Ford said. “We are partnering with community organizations to start moving on these things.

One good example is the PA CareerLink Lehigh Valley satellite office that is scheduled to open in July at 325 Chew St.” Ford explained that residents will be able to access CareerLink’s many services, while St. Luke’s will offer support such as training programs for health care jobs.

“Our basic mission is to improve the health of the community in every way we can,” Ford said. “But we also want to be a catalyst for positive changes in the city. As the hospital’s facilities and capabilities improve, everyone in Allentown benefits.” n

QNB Serves the Community far Beyond Banking To many megabanks, “community support” means issuing a few large checks to the local offices of national charities.

But QNB isn’t a megabank, and it takes a decidedly different approach.

“Community support is a major pillar of our beliefs as a community bank,” said Brian Schaffer, CFMP, senior vice president/chief marketing officer.

“We have a defined market area, a radius of about 25 miles from Quakertown, and we try to help many worthwhile causes around here,” Schaffer said, adding that funding for these actions comes straight from QNB’s earnings.

In 2018, that commitment translated to over 550 fulfilled requests. “We get far more ‘asks’ than that,” Schaffer said. “But many of them are duplicates, and

some are for statewide or national organizations. We prefer to stay local.”

That said, QNB does support three national causes: the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life,” the March of Dimes’ “March for Babies,” and the American Diabetes Association’s “Tour de Cure.”

“We support our local community in many ways,” Schaffer said. “For example, we participate in some capital campaigns, such as St. Luke’s effort for its Quakertown campus. But our employees also sit on numerous advisory boards, and offer other assistance to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bucks County’s bowling program, the Rotary Club, the Exchange Club of Western Lehigh County, and the Lions Club.”

For the past nine years, QNB has sponsored a “Batting for Books” campaign with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. The bank pledges $25 for every double the ‘Pigs hit in Coca-Cola Park, and donates

the proceeds to a local library.

“This year, the team slugged 130 doubles, so we presented the Allentown Public Library with $3, 250,” he said. Since 2011, QNB has donated $33,950 to local libraries.

Their olives are excellent too—as is their dirty martini mix (if you’re having that kind of Thanksgiving).

The dessert: Carbohydrate Row This is the term affectionately bestowed upon the area of the farmers market that begins at Amish Village Bake Shop and ends at Kiffle Kitchen. True, it is a short section, but it is dense with bake goods that will further test the waistband of your Thanksgivings pants. Two recommendations: The luscious apple crumb pie from Amish Village and the bet-you-can’t-eat-just-one apricot kiffles from Kiffle Kitchen.

The appetizer: Heckenberger’s Seafood Few apps are as easy and as impressive as shrimp cocktail and this family-run operation has the best shrimp in the area: fresh, plump, and sweet. Buy a bunch raw and poach them at home. Or order them precooked—with some Kelchner’s cocktail sauce, of course.

The coffee: Heffelfinger’s Coffee, Tea & Specialty Foods You’re going to need a little pep after all that food unless you want to fall asleep in front of the Cowboys game. family would spend 24 hours entirely within the neighborhood. Jasmine is the Vice President of the Rose Garden Neighborhood Association and Santo is the owner of assembly88, a men’s clothing store in Downtown Allentown.

We always feel like we’re always on the run. Fortunately, everything we need is within close proximity of home. Our perfect day would start with breakfast at home, and then the quick commute to Muhlenberg Elementary where our kindergartner spends most of his day. After school he’ll walk to the Jewish Community Center, where there is always tons of fun for kids (and adults). Free swim Fridays and pick-up basketball are some of our favorites. Jasmine will sneak in a workout at their gym before picking up the little guy. After the JCC, Jasmine and our son Amani will make a quick run to the Allentown Farmers Market to pick up groceries for dinner— Mr. Bill’s and the Red Barn are weekly stops. After dinner, you can find us taking a stroll around the Allentown Rose Gardens. Even though the weather is getting cooler, we still like to end our busy day with a treat from the Udder Bar. Santo will order anything with Oreo and what kid doesn’t love a classic soft serve with jimmies? There’s no better way to end a day. n
