Arts abound in the West End Theatre District

They don’t call this the West End Theatre District for nothing! Our trio of performance venues offers an eclectic mix of music, theater, dance, film, art and more, all summer long. Why spend the money, time and hassles on a trip to New York, when you can find top-quality entertainment practically at your front door? Muhlenberg College’s storied Summer Music Theatre marks its 35th anniversary with three lively shows. n Avenue Q mixes live actors with rod- and hand-puppets, as the characters face the challenges of entering adulthood, despite repeated childhood assurances that they “could do anything.” Although patterned after “Sesame Street,” this is definitely not a show for kids. June 10 28, in the Baker Theater in the Trexler Pavilion. n Widow, socialite and matchmaker, Dolly Levi is determined to help others --

especially herself -- find true love in Hello, Dolly! July 8- 26, in the Baker Theater in the Trexler Pavilion. n SMT presents a special treat for the younger set -- Grimm! Billed as a “fantastical fairytale adventure,” the interactive show mixes puppetry, music and magic as the Grimms race to keep “Rumplestiltskin” and many other classic stories from unraveling. All they need is you and your imagination. June 17 to July 25 in the Studio Theatre in the Trexler Pavilion. Get more information on these shows, or order tickets, by visiting http://www.muhlenberg.edu/main/ academics/theatre-dance/tickets/ index.html The Civic Theatre will buzz with activity during the summer months, offering everything from silent films

to acting classes. June 6: Tonys and Tapas -- the Civic’s major fundraiser will feature live performances, food, beverages, a live auction and more. 6:00 p.m. June 9: Pirates of Penzance -- The English National Opera’s production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved comic opera, in HD. 7:30 p.m. June 15: From Here to Eternity: HD presentation, from London’s West End, of Tim Rice’s musical about the soldiers of Company G (and their lovers) as World War II approaches. 7:30 p.m. June 21: Grease: Sing-a-Long -- Dressing up in poodle skirts and black leather jackets (don’t forget the barrel of Brylcreem!) will be de rigeur for this rollicking event. Belt out “Greased Lightning,” “Summer Nights,” and all the other songs from this favorite movie musical -- all of the lyrics will be on-screen! 2 p.m.

June 26 - 27: Follies -- A live staging of Sondheim’s play about former showgirls who take the stage one last time, it’s accompanied by a 24-piece orchestra. 7:30 p.m., both days. June 29: Showboat -- HD presentation of Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern’s masterpiece, filmed live at the San Francisco Opera Company. 7:30 p.m. July: The Civic Theatre again offers acting classes for budding thespians in grades K - 12. Both of the 12-day sessions offer full-day and half-day programs, depending upon age. Some need-based scholarships are available from the Betty T. and Bob Muir Theatre Scholarship Fund. Session 1: July 6 17; session 2, July 20-31. More: Managing director Michael Traupman added that other treats are in store for us. Because many aspects of the programs were in negotiation at press time, he couldn’t be too specific -- but he hopes to offer “Musical Mondays,” with big-screen presentations of classic song-and-dance movies, and a Charlie Chaplin silent feature with live organ accompaniment. “Of course, you can also count on seeing many mainstream art-house films at the 19th St. Theater and at Theater 514 all summer long,” he added.
