Kitchen Remodeling

How to modernize and update your kitchen

(With help from neighborhood businesses) An old Pennsylvania Dutch proverb holds that “No matter where I serve my guests / It seems they like my kitchen best.”

That may be one reason why kitchen remodeling can have such a solid payback on your investment -- around 70 percent of its cost, in many cases.

If you’re planning to sell your home soon -- or just have a yen for a new look -- you’re in luck. Three establishments that can help with kitchen design and equipment are within just blocks of each other in the West End Theatre District.

We talked with each of them, and got some tips on emerging trends that might start your wheels turning.

Maximizing space Kerry Aumiller, lead designer at Kitchens by Design, noted that, “many people in the Valley have small kitchens, so they need to have every available inch working for them.” She has seen clients gain visual space by sacrificing a formal dining room. “Taking out part of the defining wall provides a sense of ‘shared space.’ And more psychological openness results from having a clear view between the rooms.”

And as an alternative to the typical dining room layout, Aumiller suggests installing banquette seating along the back of the room and moving the dining table closer to it. The gained floor space could be assigned to the kitchen.

Textures Aumiller said that differing textures can add appeal to kitchen surfaces: “On stone countertops, for example, ‘leathering’ is becoming popular. That gives the surface more of a matte finish, which provides a good contrast with shiny floors and appliances.”

She added that her showroom features a wooden backsplash reclaimed from old barns. “The wood is treated to make it suitable for a backsplash,” she explained, “and its rough appearance adds outstanding 2 WEST END LIVING www.westendliving.com

depth to the space. We’ve had a lot of good feedback on it.”

Colors/finishes According to Faye Motsenigos, owner of Bella Casa Kitchen and Bath Renovations, “contrast is important. For example, I’m seeing dark espresso cabinets paired with light or white countertops,” she said. “Although people like the look of carrara marble [a white or blue-gray stone], it can be hard to maintain. Certain quartz countertops can mimic that look.

And granite suppliers are showing lighter colors. Just a short while ago, everyone wanted dark granite.”

Painted cabinets are more popular than ever, said Aumiller. And colors are subtle -- light grays and even some shades of blue are becoming mainstream. Motsenigos agrees.

“White or off-white are traditional colors, but a light gray stain or painted finish often replaces them,”

products. It’s even spilled over to dishwashers; “Although the exterior size of the units hasn’t changed, adjustable interior shelves and racks are really becoming a big thing,” said Al Schaffer, manager of Allentown Appliance.

“Glazed” cabinet doors are becoming more popular, too.

“Glazing adds richness, and highlights the interesting parts of a door,” Aumiller said. The process involves hand-applying a thinnedout second color -- often brown or gray -- over an opaque finish. The glaze tends to “hang” in corners and crevices, but that’s just part of its charm. “It’s much like ‘antiquing,’ but done with a lighter hand,” she added.

Fixtures Fixtures are adopting some bold looks. “What used to be a simple faucet now features an industrial design. And people are adding big light fixtures above their kitchen islands,” Motsenigos said.

And while chrome and nickel are still popular finishes for fixtures, other metals are emerging -- in particular, matte-finished bronze and brass. “I’m really excited about the new brass,” Aumiller said. “The matte finish offers a sense of warmth and decadence, compared to the shiny look of ‘80s brass.”

Storage Small kitchens are generally short on storage space as well — so maximizing the space you have is essential.

Motsenigos suggests exploring different ways to store spices, cutlery and other items. “Instead of just a plain cabinet, think about storing things in layers, or use a roll-out device,” she said. (Fans of “Good Eats” may recall Alton Brown’s Velcro-affixed spice tins, or his narrow-but-deep roll-out storage rack.)

Aumiller added that cabinet manufacturers are responding to consumer concerns about flexible storage by increasing the degrees, and ease, of adjustability in their

Just as cabinet manufacturers are offering increased flexibility, so are appliance producers. “The big trend is toward limited customization,” Schaffer said. “That means the units themselves are still mass-produced, but are available in different configurations.”

For example, traditional refrigerator/freezer combos had predetermined capacities and sizes.

But now customers can pick from a range of three-inch increments and divide the functions in a way that reflects their actual needs and desires. “Some people might want a 24-inch refrigerator, with an 18-inch freezer drawer, or a much bigger fridge with just a freezer drawer,” Schaffer explained.

Higher-end manufacturers, such as Sub-Zero, Wolf and JennAir, are featuring what Schaffer calls “European kitchen” designs.

That is, the faces of appliances are essentially flush with the surrounding cabinetry, resulting in a sleek, symmetrical look. And some customers go even further, hiding those flush-mounted appliances behind wood panels that match the other cabinetry.

Stainless-steel finishes still rule, he said, although black is making some inroads. Even so, he added, they still commonly sport some stainless steel trim to break up the mass of solid color.

Commercial-look stoves and ovens are still in. “They look like restaurant equipment, with big knobs and handles, and lots of burners. Many have built-in griddles or grilling areas,” he said.

Miller said it’s a great activity for date nights, bachelorette parties, baby showers, milestone birthdays – practically any special occasion.

And the studio can accommodate all ages. “We offer ‘story time and paint’ for toddlers; we read aloud, and the kids paint a picture based on what they hear. And on Sunday afternoons, our ‘family painting’ sessions are perfect for parents and children. The classes are shorter, the paintings are easier, and there’s less formal guidance,” Miller said.

Of course, individual artists of all ages are welcome to drop by for “open painting” on Saturday afternoons. Just buy a blank canvas and go to town!

Oakmont Tennis Club

Tennis anyone?

Oakmont offers a place to learn, play and love the game Oakmont Tennis Club is easy to overlook as you travel through the West End. There are no flashy signs, no ornate landscaping, no blinking scoreboards.

But those red clay courts at 21st and Allen streets hold a lot of history.

According to board member Jeff Wenck, the club’s roots stretch to 1919. A group of World War I officers, who had been stationed at Camp Crane in Allentown, formed a tennis club and decided to develop some property at 20th and Liberty Streets. They named their new club “Oakmont” because of a large oak tree on the property.

Oakmont remained there until the mid-1920s, when it was moved to its present location. And it’s been open ever since -- even during World War II. Wenck’s own connection Oakmont

goes back almost as far. His parents, Lucille and Taylor, played there as children and as young adults in the ‘30s and ‘40s. “Around 1960, my mom decided that dad was spending too much time playing golf. She suggested he take up tennis again, and teach us kids. I’ve been an active member ever since,” he said.

Adding to the mystique is its playing surface – they’re the last set of clay courts in Allentown and some of the only ones in the entire Lehigh Valley. (Wenck explained that Cedar Beach and Jordan Park replaced theirs long ago).

“That’s one of the neat things about Oakmont,” said tennis enthusiast, West End resident and retired attorney Anthony Muir.

In its heyday, Wenck said, Oakmont was THE place for West End kids to play tennis. “From the ‘60s to the ‘80s, we’d have up to 300 juniors [players under the age of 18] taking lessons. Your parents could drop you off, or you could bike over, and stay the whole day, playing and socializing,” Wenck said.

In those days, players hung out in a DIY clubhouse. “The original was

started in the ‘20s,” Wenck said. “It was gradually made from five do-ityourself buildings purchased from Sears and Roebuck.” The current clubhouse was erected in 2000.

Nearly a century later, Oakmont is still going strong. In 2008, it was named “Club of the Year” in the Mid-Atlantic States Eastern PA District by the United States Tennis Association. And in 2011, Tennis Destinations recognized Oakmont as

one of the “Top Twelve Best Places to Play on Red Clay.”

Although Oakmont is considered a private club, it’s certainly not exclusive. “You must be a member to play there, but membership is open to anyone,” Wenck said.

Simply pay the membership fee, and you’re in.

Muir added, “Even though you pay dues, everyone pitches in to help set up and tear down the courts, and to maintain them -- players even sweep the courts themselves when they’re finished playing. It really fosters a sense of community.”

The 501(c)7 non-profit club has a history of giving back to the neighborhood as well. Oakmont has been the home court for William Allen High School’s tennis team (including Muir, when he played for Allen in 1966) for decades and

provides summer training for the team. It also hosted Lehigh Valley SportsFest’s tennis tournament for several years.

And it’s embarking on a beautification program as well. “We take pride in being part of the West End so, over the next few months, our volunteers will be planting and maintaining flower boxes along the perimeter of the club,” Wenck said.

Oakmont also offers lessons to all levels of tennis players, from beginners to elites, and new members are always welcome.

“Some things haven’t changed in years,” Muir concluded. “And Oakmont is one of them. Just like the game of tennis itself, it has endured. It’s a throwback -- but in a very, very good sense.”

WEYC: setting things straight You may have heard rumors that the West End Youth Center is dissolving. In order to set things straight, we talked to WEYC board president Paul Krempasky.

He confirmed that the building itself is for sale, but the organization will continue to operate.

“We found it in our best financial interest to divest ourselves of the building,” he said. “We have an agreement for sale, and hope to close on it by the end of June.

“We will maintain an office there, and we’ll continue to focus on the activities we’ve done best for the past 60 years -- serving the youth of our community.”

WEYC’s sports activities include spring baseball and softball (perhaps in the autumn months too) and winter/summer basketball, and karate lessons throughout the school year.

The Center serves about 250 families annually, with over 300 registrations each year. “We are always looking for more people to coach, or to be involved with the Center in other ways,” Krempasky added.

Mayfair

Mayfair celebrates third season in West End As we went to press with this issue, the Mayfair Festival of the Arts had just wrapped up its 29th celebration, and its third at the Allentown Fairgrounds site.

The festival has substantially improved its visual arts component (glass, painting, sculpture, photography, etc.) since the 2013 move, and this year’s edition brought another difference -- a series of mini-music festivals.

Mayfair jettisoned its tradition of mixing musical styles each day in favor of themed programs.

“It’s clear that people are really passionate about genre-specific events,” said executive director Arlene E. Daily, so attendees were treated to day-long blocks of bluegrass, folk, classic rock, jazz, country and Celtic performances on indoor and outdoor stages, plus 3-1/2 hour sets of the blues each evening.

With its ample parking, dependable water/power infrastructure and other amenities, the Fairgrounds property has been an ideal location for the festival.

And the neighborhood has stood behind it. “From our experience in the West End itself, we know it’s an area that supports arts and culture,” Daily said. “Many West End residents simply walk over to the festival, because it’s practically

next door. When we examine the ZIP codes of attendees, we find more and more people have come from the 18104 area. And many of our volunteers live in the West End, as well,” she concluded.

We’re thankful that Mayfair selected to relocate near the West End Theatre District. We wish the festival many years of success in its relatively new home. n

WWII memorial

What do you know about the WETD war memorial?

Each Memorial Day is a special time to honor those who served our country in the military. The monument on the southeast corner of 19th and Allen streets lists 221 names of “the boys and girls from the fifth, sixth and seventh districts of the eleventh ward, Allentown, PA” that served overseas in World War II. Although it has stood (in one form or another) since 1943, there is little background information about it available. We’re calling on you, our readers, for help.

WARM Weather Tips

Get ready for summer with advice from local healthcare experts George Harrison was right -- it really was a long, cold, lonely winter. And the prospect of warm and sunny days is sure to inspire us to head outside and soak up as much of the sun as we can.

But the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer can be mixed blessings.

Although the warm weather can be delightful, it can also pose many health risks. So before you venture out, heed the advice of two local physicians and avoid many of summer’s potential pitfalls.

Do your best to stay cool Stay out of the sun when it’s hottest, advised Dr. Shawna Murphy, DO, an emergency room physician with Lehigh Valley Health Network. That’s typically between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

And if you’re going to be active

during that window, try to stay in air-conditioned spaces. That’s especially important, she added, during times of excessive-heat warnings.

And although many people think leaving children or pets in a car with partially opened windows is okay, it really isn’t. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a car parked in direct sunlight can heat up to 131˚F when the outside temperature is 80˚F. “Never leave kids, elderly people or pets in a hot car,” Murphy said. “Their body temperatures rise faster, and that can lead to a serious condition called hyperthermia.”

Stay hydrated “You lose plenty of fluid every day just being alive,” said Dr. Dennis McGorry, MD, with McGorry & Matta

“If you’re exercising in warm, humid weather, you can dehydrate in about 30 minutes,” he said. That’s

why he recommends drinking about a pint of fluid before your workout, and breaking every 20 minutes or so for another 4-6 ounces. Be sure to avoid alcoholic drinks -- they’ll dehydrate you even faster.

Murphy also suggested freezing a bottle of water before you start exercising outdoors. “It will melt slowly, and stay cold,” she said.

And both doctors agree that -unless your routine is extremely vigorous -- the various “ades” and other commercial drinks are usually not necessary.

Stay away from bugs Lyme disease is especially prevalent from May through October, McGorry said. And, although woody areas with high grass are the likeliest spots for tick bites, there is still some risk even in your own backyard. “And your pets can be vectors for the disease, too,” he said.

That’s why it’s importance to check yourself -- and your furry friends -- for ticks. If you find one, “the best way to remove it is to pull near the head with tweezers. If you squeeze the tick’s body, you increase the risk of exposure to the infectious agent,” McGorry said.

Clothing Stick with loosely fitting, lightweight and “breathable” clothing to keep cool. A widebrimmed hat will offer portable shade, too. “It’s better not to wear too much make-up in hot weather,” Murphy said. “It can impede normal sweating, and make you feel even hotter.” Metallic jewelry can rapidly heat up, too. And sandals can be good summer footwear. “Don’t go barefoot,” she cautioned, “especially on hot pavement and sand. You can easily burn your feet.”

Gardening is a very healthy activity, but it is important to protect yourself from harmful UVA rays and be sure to hydrate regularly.

Sunscreens Excessive sun exposure isn’t just painful -- it can be downright harmful, too. There are two primary forms of ultraviolet radiation: UVA and UVB. “UVA rays are more abundant, and can cause long-term damage to the skin,” McGorry said.

“And, although UVB is necessary for us to produce vitamin D, it can also cause sunburn, skin cancer and cataracts.”

McGorry’s recommendations?

Check the day’s UV index, and time your exposure accordingly. And be sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF value of at least 15.

Talk to your doctor Many medications caution to “take with food,” or “with plenty of water,” or warn you about mixing certain meds. But the sun can also interact with many commonly used drugs. “It’s a long, long list,” Murphy said. “It includes psychotropic drugs like Haldol, medications for Parkinson’s disease, diuretics, even certain antibiotics.” If you’re on medications, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your possible need to avoid exposure to the sun.

One final tip The most sensible approach to dealing with to weather is to emulate the Boy Scouts, by being prepared. “Check ahead on weather conditions, dress right, and use sunscreen before you venture outside,” Murphy said.

It’s simple advice that can have a huge impact on your health. n

A record 839 runners – most dressed for the festive occasion – completed the seventh annual West End St. Patrick’s 5k race preceding the traditional St. Patrick’s Parade, March 22. The race raised more than $12,000 to support neighborhood development activities in the West End Theatre District. Ian Walsh of Easton won the men’s race in the record time of 15:31. West End resident Amy Grab (right) was the top female, finishing in 19:04. Special thanks go to Air Products and Muhlenberg College for their continued support of the race.

EF High School Exchange Year Program Muhlenberg College will host over 900 high school students from 13 countries in this prestigious immersion program. “World of Food” Festival coming September 19 Despite differences in languages, religion, politics, or skin color, everybody has one thing in common: We love to eat.

And you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better mix of the world’s cuisines than at the inaugural “West End World of Food” festival on September 19.

“Although it had a long and very successful history, we determined that our Oktoberfest celebration has run its course,” said Scott Smith, head of the District’s events committee. “It had to compete with similar events, and we wanted something that would be distinctively ours.”

And given the growing diversity of the Lehigh Valley, the food fest was an obvious replacement.

Smith already anticipates vendors of Greek, Italian, Korean and Pennsylvania Dutch cookery, with many more sure to come as the brand-new program develops -and all of it washed down with an assortment of beers from around the globe.

Smith said the festival’s layout will be similar to Oktoberfest’s -plenty of food trucks and stands, a stage for live performances, and a children’s area that will be run by Lafayette Bank.

But there will be differences, too. A secondary stage, in the alley between the Civic Theatre and Lafayette Bank, will be dedicated to younger performers and their fans.

Rodale Farmer’s Market

Innovative markets to open in Allentown Parts of Allentown qualify as food deserts: low-income communities, limited access to food choices, and limited mobility. But that situation will improve a bit, thanks to the Rodale Institute. It’s opening a new farmer’s market selling only organically grown produce at the Allentown YMCA, 425 S. 15th St. The Rodale Institute Organic Farmers Market will be open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays from June 6 to October 31. A similar market at St. Luke’s Evangelical Church, 417 N. 7th St., will be open Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from June 13 to October 31.

The fruits and vegetables are grown on-site in a series of “gardening towers,” vertical garden boxes that can hold up to dozens of plants. They’re made from welded wire and black garden plastic, and filled with compost (recycled from Allentown’s leaf collection program) and straw. Planters bring summertime color to neighborhood The West End Alliance’s Theater District planter program is humming along. Although weather conditions forced us to delay our Spring planting, colorful blossoms are now in place. We’ve also installed and filled eight new planters along Liberty St. at 19th.

It’s an ambitious project -- the West End Alliance provides $6,700 throughout the year for greenery and maintenance at those locations, as well as at the World War II monument and the Allen St. Market and Deli, by Yogi’s Landscaping and Hardscaping. n
