West End Alliance presents the

West End World of Food Festival Allentown, PA -- The West End World of Food Festival will makes its debut Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm in Allentown’s West End Theatre District. The festival is an outgrowth of the West End Oktoberfest that the West End Alliance programmed for the past 6 years.

The Festival will be held on 19th street between Tilghman and Liberty streets in Allentown’s West End Theatre District.

The West End Alliance, which will host the event, is planning a cultural event that features a diverse selection of food, entertainment, vendors and community organizations – spread out over the are surrounding Allentown’s 19th Street Theatre.

“The West End World of Food Festival has something for everyone – arts, culture, children’s activities, music, beer and a wide variety of food to sample,” said Scott Smith, chairman of the Festival. “Join us for lunch, dinner, the whole day or a few hours in

the West End.” The School of Rock – Lehigh Valley, which recently relocated to the neighborhood, will be the first of the featured bands at 11:00 am.

Additional bands will play until 10:00 pm including Yancarlos

Sanchez, Lily and Winston, The Trophy Husbands, Scott Marshalls Highway, and James Supra with Sarah Ayers.

The focus of the festival, however, is on food. Among the food vendors who are scheduled to be present at the event are The

As an organization dedicated to promoting the West End of Allentown as a local residential neighborhood center, the West End Alliance will entertain adults and children with a day of live music, activities and food from around the world.

Meet John Williams, the new president of Muhlenberg College Eisteddfod competition in Wales).

Williams is also an accomplished pilot, and holds the “airline transport pilot designation,” the FAA’s highest and most exacting ranking for both single- and multiengine aircraft.

Despite his hectic schedule, he found time to engage in a Q & A session with West End Living:

ushered in global supply chains in which a wide variety of jobs have shifted relentlessly to low-wage countries. Yet, the U.S. remains the global leader in the innovation of new products, new services, and new ways of creating value; in short, the creative economy.

The liberal arts -- including natural sciences, social sciences and humanities -- represent the essential core of the creative economy, where success requires original and breakthrough thinking, not just rote application of rules from a textbook.

Q What is your overall philosophy, as you join Muhlenberg College?

On July 1, John I. Williams became the 12th president of Muhlenberg College. He brings to his new position a varied background in finance, business and academia, such as: n Concurrent J.D. and M.B.A. at Harvard n Member of the Amherst College Board of Trustees, 1984 - present; named a Life Trustee in 1996. n Former partner in the higher education practice of The Bridgespan Group, a strategy consulting firm that assists non-profits n Manager of the consulting practice at Eduventures, an education-related information services company. n Participant in three major capital campaigns n Expert-in-Residence at Harvard’s Innovation Lab since 2011, mentoring students from all across the university. n Parents’ Council of Washington University in St. Louis (with his wife Diane) He’s also traveled through the U. S. and 40 other countries, whether on business, for pleasure, or in concert with the Mastersingers (a male chorus that took first prize at the International

A Muhlenberg is a college with a long, proud history in which it has served several generations of students extraordinarily well over its 167-year history. Accordingly, I enter the presidency with deep regard for the faculty, staff, students, alumni and parents who comprise the global Muhlenberg community and a deep respect for all the generations of leaders and contributors whose efforts have built this fine college. There are certainly challenges ahead, but Muhlenberg is well-positioned to meet those challenges.

Q What are your goals for the college? And how do you plan to implement them?

A My first goal is for Muhlenberg to be much better known for the quality educational offerings we provide. Muhlenberg has a terrific story to tell in so many areas of our program -- starting with our outstanding faculty and powerful student outcomes -- and deserves to be much better known nationally and globally. We will tell our story more widely and effectively.

Q Why are the liberal arts

important? How will they impact the shift from the knowledge economy to the creative economy?

A We have witnessed a global economic transformation over the past 30 years that has evolved at breathtaking speed and has

is occurring?

A In the Creative Economy, represented by organizations such as Apple, Uber, Sonos, and Samsung, the coin of the realm is ideas; new, original ideas. Ideas, particularly new and original ones, emerge from a process of thinking deeply about problems with an awareness of both wellestablished and newly-evolving models. The liberal arts, including both the arts and sciences, provide an essential foundation for just this sort of thinking.

The leaders of tomorrow will emerge disproportionately from fine liberal arts colleges such as Muhlenberg.

What a fantastic area!

Q Tell us your perception of

“town and gown” relations; how can the college and the neighborhood work together?

A I’m just beginning to learn in this area, as our students have just arrived. I know we are committed to being good neighbors and that will certainly continue.

Q What sort of community

involvement do your foresee for Muhlenberg? What programs will you maintain? Any new ones?

A Muhlenberg is highly involved in the Allentown community, particularly in the schools, where our students provide programs for Allentown’s youth. I’m quite sure we will sustain this and other programs and look to expand our community engagement wherever possible.

Q Acceptance of a new job is

influenced by the position itself, as well as its location. What was it about Allentown that attracted you?

A Allentown is undergoing an

incredible renaissance, which makes the area attractive. In addition, the city’s proximity to Philadelphia and New York is a strong plus. The parks are wonderful and the people are warm and welcoming. What more could one want?

Q What are your three favorite things about Muhlenberg College?

A The faculty, the students, and the staff. The beautiful campus is terrific also. n

Local experts offer interior design tips to upgrade any room As surely as the leafy canopy above Allen Street will change from summer green to autumn brown, so will many of us develop an itch for changing the looks of our living spaces. Even if a total makeover would make your home improvement budget explode, you can still find ways to refresh and update your home without breaking the bank.

Two West End Theatre District experts gave us the professional lowdown.

One of the key truths of redecorating -- whether you take the DIY route or hire a professional -- is that YOU must make the final decisions.

David Stengel, owner of HangUps custom framing and art gallery at 602 N St Cloud St., puts it rather bluntly: “If a decorator says ‘Put this up,’ but it’s not really to your taste, don’t do it! Sometimes clients

hesitate to disagree, because they don’t want to upset the designer.

Just remember -- you must like whatever you put in your house.”

And Chris Gabellini, owner and president of Gabellini Designs, LLC at 1952 W Allen St, concurs.

“I urge my clients to be as honest with me as I am with them. When we’re pre-shopping, I’ll guide them through styles, colors, and finishes, and will explain why this piece will work, but that one won’t. And they should tell me if they really dislike one of my choices. I won’t be offended because, in the end, it’s their house and they have to live with the results. I don’t.”

Good design is a process -- so don’t be surprised if plans evolve and change. In fact, Stengel encourages his customers to be flexible. “I often suggest taking home samples of mats and frames to see how they really look in your

home,” he said. “I can do the same with actual artwork; take it home for a while, and see if it works as well as you think it does.”

Style trends “Mid-century modern -- that ranges from the ‘40s to the ‘60s -- is a popular look right now. It features clean, simple lines and neutral finishes, such as teak.

Even Ethan Allen, which sold very traditional designs, carries mid-century-inspired pieces,” Gabellini said. “They’re practically works of art themselves, not just furnishings.” The Danish-modern style is a good example, he said.

Regarding wall hangings, Stengel said, “Nationally, people seem to be leaning toward bolder, brighter, more cheerful colors -- almost like comic book colors. In the Lehigh Valley, at least, photos just don’t fly much; prints are more popular.

And I sell many more landscapes that I do abstract images.”

Materials and colors Organic wool and cotton accessories are gaining popularity, Gabellini said, prompted by the burgeoning “green” movement.

“Mohair is making a big comeback.

It’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. And, although it’s an expensive fabric, it’s very durable.

Some of my own furnishings are mohair; even at 40 years old, they still look as good as the first day.”

Instead, think about using accessories -- such as throw pillows -- that pick up different colors in a rug or couch, or that work well with your artwork’s mats or frame.

It’s a simple way to tie a room together without making it look too uniform.

He also sees a trend to brighter solid colors and to patterns on smaller pieces, such as throw pillows. “They’re easy to change for different seasons or holidays,” he added, enabling you to refresh your décor easily.

Do it right Whether you favor abstracts or landscapes, riotous colors or monochrome, Stengel recommends investing in quality artwork, rather than simply putting something on the wall. “A $20 poster in a $500 frame just doesn’t make sense,” he said. “You’ll do better by saving until you can afford a good piece.”

And when you acquire that piece, frame it right the first time.

Poor techniques or materials can lead to deterioration over time.

“Twenty-five years ago, we framed with whatever was on hand,” Stengel said. “We just didn’t know that acidic materials could destroy a picture.”

At Hang-Ups, art is framed with conservation mounting; that is, acid-free mat boards and backing boards, and glass faces that protect against damaging ultraviolet light.

In keeping with his “try before you buy” approach, Stengel offers this decorating tip: If you want to hang a cluster of pictures, lay them out on the floor, and then re-arrange them until you find the combination that pleases you. It’s much simpler than hanging, and re-hanging, and re-hanging again.

Coordination Stengel cautions against trying too hard to make everything match. For example, “If your furniture is a particular color, you don’t have to use the same color for a frame -- it might not complement

“If you find a couch or sofa that has nice lines and form -- even if it’s beat-up -- you can get a new look just by reupholstering it,” Gabellini said. “Often, you’ll spend just a quarter of the price of a new piece.”

You can also save money by repurposing materials.

Gabellini described butcher-block countertops he’s created from the wooden floors of tractor-trailer rigs. “The finished counters showed incredibly warm, rich colors” even though the material could have been considered scrap.

He’s also used cabinetry from old office buildings to create distinctive kitchen storage units -- at half the price of new gear.

Stengel adds that people often obtain one-of-a-kind art pieces by surrounding children’s projects with brightly colored mats and quality frames. “When they’re presented properly, those efforts can look wonderful on your walls.”

Gabellini offers a final tip. “As a client, go into the situation with an open mind. A good designer will help you to determine what you really like and want. The mayhem centers on Truffaldino, a servant who doubles his wages (and meals) by serving two masters at once. Many roles feature masked performers, on a minimally decorated stage, in the traditional 18th-century style.

The 18th Amendment compelled people to open “speakeasies” where alcohol could be purchased and served.

It was the era of Prohibition: the 18th amendment to the Constitution had outlawed the production and sale of alcohol throughout the United States.

But, in many places, you could still get a drink -- if you had the right connections. They’d tell you the secret location, the entry password, the special handshake.

The illegal joints were known as “speakeasies,” and they flourished.

Allentown was no different.

But did you know that a former speakeasy still exists right in our neighborhood?

Ron Devlin, a former Morning Call reporter, filled us in.

He had befriended Harriet Crouthamel, the founder of the Hava Java coffee shop at 526 N. 19th St. One day, she took him to the back of the shop, led him into the basement, and took him to a small secret space that had once served as a speakeasy.

“It was a small room,” Devlin recalled, “and even had a sign with its name -- although it escapes me now. The serpentine bar was built from glass blocks, 12 WEST END LIVING www.westendliving.com

and there were about four tables.

Near the bar were several smaller spaces, like stalls,” perhaps used by “painted ladies” to entertain their clients.

Apparently, the main entrance was through an alley door, located at the rear of what is now The Jewelers in the same block.

But here’s where the story gets really interesting. According to rumor, a street crew discovered an underground tunnel decades later that led from the gin joint to the basement of the Civic Theatre. If true, Devlin speculated, it would have provided a quick exit in the event of a raid.

After all, who would stop to question a respectable citizen, walking out of a movie?

Donecker Mansion Legacy Project Supports Historic Preservation Efforts Following the demolition of the Donecker Mansion, a group of concerned Allentonians has organized “The Donecker Mansion Legacy Project.”

The group will first assess the West Park neighborhood (12th Street to 20th Street, and Hamilton to Gordon Streets) to identify significant properties that are already protected by the Historic Building Demolition Overlay District or the West Park Historic District designations. From there the group will develop various strategies to extend protection, and prepare information on the economic benefits of historic preservation.

The group consists of prominent multi-disciplinary professionals featuring experts in zoning, historic preservation, art and architecture, community development, economics, business and real estate development and management as well as both new and lifelong city residents.

Thomas J. Yuracka, President of the West Park Civic Association, remarked “While we are focusing on the West Park neighborhood in the short term, we look forward to working with other neighborhood groups in the city in expanding our efforts.”

War Memorial Update We’ve made some progress on the World War II memorial at 19th and Allen streets. One of our readers, Frances N. Ritter, sent us a hand-written letter that filled in some details. (Thank you, Frances!)

Dear Sir: In regard to the Veteran’s Memorial at 19th & Allen Sts: There was a shoemaker named Sam -- his shop was at the alley on 19th St. behind what is now Ruffino’s. I believe he made the original wooden monument. We moved here in 1950 and he was very upset that they took the monument away.

It seems he asked the city to erect a monument and they wouldn’t. So he made one and put it up himself.

I don’t remember his last name but perhaps if you go back in city records you should come

up with the information on the shoemaker’s hop and his name. I’m pretty sure it is an Italian name.

The address would have been 530 or 532 19th St. He wanted so badly to honor our veterans!

Thanks to a diligent search through city records by Allentown Library reference librarian Kenny Woolley, we determined that Samuel A. Russiano indeed ran

a shoe repair business at 532 N. 19th St. Although we were unable to find more information about Sam himself, we determined that his widow, Althea, died in 1990.

Sam and Althea had two sons -David and Theodore (who served as a local district justice between 1971 and 1995 -- and daughter Rita. We have traced Theodore’s son David to Zionsville…and

that’s where the trail grew cold.

We’ll continue to dig, and update you when we can. And if this information triggers any more memories, please let us know! n

PennDOT is in the midst of a four-month resurfacing project of Tilghman Street in the City of Allentown and South Whitehall Township. Completion is slated for early October.

The improvement project stretches from Route 309 in the township to 10th Street in the city and includes milling, paving and new curb ramps.

Daytime lane closures with flagging or lane shifts will occur duing nighttime and overnight hours (8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) for milling and paving work. Motorists should expect lane restrictions with flagging or lane shifts.

The impacted section of Tilghman Street handles as many as 19,000 vehicles a day.

The $2.8 million project is paid for from state funds from Act 89.
