Shopkeepers’ donations prove a real lifesaver

A group of traders who clubbed together to buy a defibrillator, fearing their shops were too far from the nearest one, have saved a person’s life within three weeks of its installation.

Shopkeepers in Dorchester’s Durngate Street were shocked when another trader in their street moved to different premises – and took the defibrillator she had installed with her.

So they set about raising the £1,900 needed to install a new one, getting £1,100 from Dorchester Business Improvement District (DBID) and splitting the rest of the cost among themselves.

Andrea Smith from The Hair Gallery said: “For every minute that someone’s in cardiac arrest without receiving CPR and having a

defibrillator used on them, their chance of survival decreases by 10%. That’s why it’s so important to act immediately.

“We worked out it would take about seven minutes to retrieve the nearest defibrillator and thought we must do something about that.”

Lisa Ryall from Dorchester Aesthetics said: “It’s just fantastic that the defibrillator was nearby and could help a patient so quickly after being

installed. We are all so chuffed that it worked.

“We couldn’t believe it when the last defibrillator was removed. We had people coming in the shop to look for it.

“So we approached the BID, who agreed to help.”

There are other machines at Wetherspoon’s, Goulds and the Post Office, funded by the BID, and others at County Hall and Boots. But the machine at Boots, nearest Durngate Street,

is only accessible during opening hours.

Volunteer needed to coordinate Home Library Service The Home Library Service in Sherborne needs a local volunteer coordinator.

A spokesman for the service said: “Are you a keen reader? Can’t bear to be without a good book? Then you’ll understand how important it is to be able to carry on reading, even if you

can’t get to your local library.

“We are looking for a volunteer to join and lead our team of volunteers at Sherborne Library, coordinating the service with support from the service manager and library staff.”

The volunteer will need a clean driving licence and the

use of a car.

Pensioners stage protest on fossil fuels

Pensioners in Dorset are calling for an immediate end to investment in fossil fuels by the county council.

Dorset Action on Pensions voiced its opposition to Dorset County Pension Fund’s plan to invest in fossil fuels at a county hall committee meeting.

Following the meeting, JulieAnn Booker from Dorset Action on Pensions said: “There is not a single justification to keep investing pension fund members’ and council taxpayers’ money in planet-destroying fossil fuel companies.

“Divestment is morally, environmentally and economically the right thing to do. Even the likes of Blackrock have said there is no financial drawback to divesting from fossil fuels.”

Julie-Ann, a pensioner in the Dorset scheme, said she feels ‘terrible’ that her income is linked to what she describes as ‘damaging companies’.

She added: “We urge Dorset County Pension Fund to do the right thing: stop funding fossil fuel and invest in our future, a genuinely green future for our children.

“This will also create good jobs and provide energy security, which we need now more than ever.”

Citing a report by pension fund campaign group Make My Money Matter, a spokesman for Dorset Action on Pensions said: “We have looked closely at the research commissioned by Make My Money Matter in partnership with financial services company Aviva.

“It shows that pension fund divestment will effectively help decarbonise the personal finances of approximately 80,000 Dorset pension fund members. The positive impact in terms of carbon dioxide reduction is immense.

“For every £1 invested in sustainable financial products instead of fossil fuels, a carbon saving of 0.64kgs is made.

“Therefore, divesting the circa £128million currently invested in fossil fuels by Dorset’s Pension Fund will realise a carbon saving of 83,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.”

Dorset Pension fund member and anti-fossil fuel campaigner Caz Dennett said: “Now is the time to clean up our Dorset pension fund, not just from those who wage war on other countries, but from fossil fuel companies who persist with operations in the full knowledge that they are devastating life on earth.”

Boosted by its success in the three categories of this year’s Dorset Tourism Awards the centre is now open six days a week for the summer season.

Buried in Time features the coastal geology of the West Bay area and celebrates the 20th anniversary of the World Heritage Coast designation. It includes superb fossil specimens of creatures from the Jurassic age, some 170 million years ago.

Buried in Time also tells the story of three individual fossil collectors, including how a boy’s first chance fossil find near West Bay led to a lifetime of interest that in turn helped shaped scientific understanding of the development of the earth.

School’s art scholars’ work goes on show Aspiring young artists have been showcasing their creativity.

Pupils from Years 7 to 13 at Leweston School organised an ‘art scholars’ exhibition to show off their work. Exhibition organisers say the artists’ aim has been to inspire others to be creative.

A school spokesman said: “The opportunity to exhibit works from Years 7 through to 13 has been a great experience for all

involved and received huge appreciation from students and staff alike.

“Works in the exhibition present interests outside of the classroom, with

many works having been created in students’ free time.

“Inspiration for the works has a wide breadth, from nature – in both

vegetation and the human and animal form – to architecture and political commentary.

“Works have been created in a variety of media including drawing, painting, darkroom processes and collage.

“The school hopes that the exhibition has inspired the school community. The artists should feel extremely proud of their achievements and the high standard of work.”

Sign up for series of tree planting West Dorset residents of all ages will come together to plant trees along a rural bridleway.

The Piddle Path Action Team is holding a tree planting session for pupils of Piddle Valley First School from 11am on Friday, March 25.

A tree planting event for the wider community is being held between 11am and 3pm on Saturday, March 26.

A spokesman for the Piddle Path Action Team said: “The first event will see about 50 children from the Piddle Valley First School planting five trees.

“The school pupils, aged four to nine, will walk along the Piddle Path and each class will then plant their chosen tree.

“The children will continue to visit and water their adopted tree over the course of the year.”

The pupils are adopting their trees in return for a donation to raise money for people in Ukraine and to build a new bike shelter for the school.

Headteacher Jayne Browne said: “By not only planting but also ‘adopting’ the tree, our children will learn how to care for trees and will also establish a strong

connection with their natural surroundings.”

A further 45 trees will be planted by other members of the community on Saturday, March 26, and all are welcome to attend.

Anyone wishing to adopt a tree should sign up in advance by emailing amandagair@me.com The minimum suggested donation is £5.

Participants should bring a spade and a watering can.

The Piddle Path café will be providing hot drinks.

The selection of saplings being planted include English oak, silver birch, aspen, green beech,

common alder, hornbeam, rowan and goat willow and were all donated by The Conservation Volunteers.

The Piddle Path initiative is a community-led project which aims to restore the bridleway linking Piddlehinton, White Lackington and Piddletrenthide. n Piddle Valley First School is hosting a ‘walk to school’ event on Thursday, April 7 at 8.20am along the main road to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by pedestrians and cyclists using the road.

Artist’s message of hope for Ukraine Bridport-based artist Hugo Grenville is sharing a message of hope with the people of Ukraine.

Mr Grenville will give a talk in front of his painting Soul by Soul and Silently at St Mary’s Church in South Street, Bridport from 5pm on Sunday, April 3.

The illustrated talk will examine the history of western art during moments of crisis and war.

A spokesman said: “Hugo Grenville’s Soul by Soul and Silently was exhibited by the Société des Artistes

Français at their annual salon, the oldest and most prestigious exhibiting society in the world.

“Mr Grenville’s six-foot wide painting, inspired by the unfolding tragedies in

Syria, Iraq and Palestine, was on display at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2014. The painting has an added relevance as we look on impotently as Russia unleashes a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine.

“The scene, which is entirely imagined, shows a displaced family gathered amongst the debris of smashed buildings: a young woman talks to a soldier, a mother holds her dead son across her lap, a girl raises her hands towards the

soldier in a supplicatory gesture, and behind her an old man stares out bleakly at the viewer.”

The painting Soul by Soul and Silently can be viewed at St Mary’s Church on weekdays from 10am to 4pm or during services.

Tickets for the talk are £5 on the door or can be booked in advance at the website Eventbrite.

All proceeds will go to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal through the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Group busking for DEC and Red Cross Gathering show Kind-hearted singers from 12.15pm to Ukraine support Local Vocals are 1.15pm on performing throughout Dorset to raise money for the people of Ukraine.

Singing group leader Lesley Whatley has arranged for singers to go out busking to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee and the Red Cross.

Street performances will take place at Bucky Doo Square in Bridport from 12.15pm to 1.15pm on Monday, March 28 and Monday, April 4.

Singers will also perform in South Street, Dorchester, outside the former Marks & Spencer shopfront,

Tuesday, March 29 and Tuesday, April 5.

The performance in Sherborne will take place outside Waitrose and/or the Post Office on Thursday, March 31 and Thursday, April 7 from 12.15pm to 1.15pm.

There will also be performances at Stoborough, Wareham Quay and/or Rempstone Passage, through to Sainsbury’s, on Friday, April 1 and Friday, April 8 from 12.15pm to 1.15pm.

The performers will sing peace songs and the Ukrainian National Anthem.

People wearing yellow gathered at Dorchester’s Borough Gardens in support of people in the Ukraine.

The vigil was introduced by the Mayor, Gareth Jones.

Prince of Wales headteacher Gary Spracklen spoke of the school’s collections for refugees and Town Crier and former Mayor, Alistair Chisholm read a poem by Thomas Hardy.

West Dorset Leisure Holidays won top honours at this year’s Bridport Business Awards.

The owner of five familymanaged holiday parks in Dorset was declared Overall Business of the Year.

It also collected the award for Green/Eco Business of the Year.

In total, 14 awards were presented at the annual awards, staged by MW Events at Highlands End Holiday Park.

Organiser Nigel Reeve said: “This is the third year of these awards and entries grow year on year.

“However, within this, there are interesting trends.

“Three years ago interest in

the Green/Eco category was low. Now it’s a category with one of the highest number of entries.

“We have to acknowledge the huge support we have received from local businesses, the Bridport Chamber and the Bridport Town Council.

“This support has ensured these awards have become a major event in the local business calendar.”

Chinese clothing firm takes a Shein to Dorset artwork A painter from West Dorset says a Chinese clothing firm used her artwork without permission.

Vanessa Bowman from Cattistock was emailed a link to a Shein web page, showing a jumper with what appeared to be one of her paintings on it being sold for £17.

“They didn’t remotely bother trying to change anything,” Vanesa told The Guardian.

“The things I paint are my garden and my little village: it’s my life. And they’ve just taken my world to China and whacked it on an acrylic jumper.”

Vanessa said she is unlikely to try to challenge the use of her copyright material through the courts because of how costly and stressful it would be.

She said: “I was really angry

that somebody could just take something I’ve worked so hard to produce.

“They obviously don’t care.

All I want to do is paint in my studio, I don’t want to get involved with lawyers and could feel myself getting really stressed.

“It was a bit of a David and

Goliath situation and I was completely overwhelmed.”

Vanessa is not the first artist to accuse Shein of using their copyright material without permission.

Dozens of people have posted about their designs being stolen online, sometimes using the slogan

#ShameOnShein on social media.

Companies such as Dr Martens and Levi Strauss have also launched legal actions against the Chinese firm in the past.

A spokesman for Shein said the company “respects designers and artists, and the intellectual property rights of others,” adding that it takes “all claims of infringement seriously”.

The spokesman added: “When legitimate complaints are raised by valid IP rights holders, Shein promptly addresses the situation.”

It added that suppliers were required to certify that their products did not infringe the intellectual property of third parties, with “appropriate action” taken when “noncompliance is found”.

Land sale fears over Local Plan delay Fears are growing that a delay to the publication of Dorset Council’s Local Plan is discouraging landowners from selling their land to property developers.

A spokesman for Burton Bradstock Community Land Trust said the organisation is still looking for a site in the area that is suitable for development.

But the spokesman also said the trust’s board believes the delay to Dorset’s new Local Plan – not due now until later in the spring – may discourage landowners from offering a site until it is clear where development will be allowed.

later this month to review sites previously considered for development and to establish whether future works may be possible.

Trust board chairman David Dixon said: “It is disappointing that so far we have not had a positive response to our enquiries regarding pockets of land that we feel could be used for a small affordable housing development.

“The covid restrictions

over the past two years have not helped, in that we were restricted in meeting landowners.

“We are also conscious that the delay in Dorset’s Local Plan may put off landowners from considering land for a trust development, which would usually form an ‘exception site’ used for affordable housing in perpetuity, but which would not normally be able to be used for

housing. But we aren’t giving up; if anything, the housing need has become even greater in this area, so we would be very grateful to hear from anyone in Burton Bradstock with ideas or suggestions of areas that we could consider.

Parish councillor Jacqui Sewell is calling for new housing to be ‘reserved’ for local people only.

The Broadwindsor councillor said many rural villages and small towns in West Dorset have ‘nowhere left to build’ because certain areas are considered not sustainable for development.

She proposes that some of these areas that fall outside of current development boundaries should be earmarked for affordable housing for local families.

Mrs Sewell said: “Lyme Regis is a prime example of this problem; all they have left is a very small piece of bog land, and because social housing areas aren’t designated as exception

sites, anyone from anywhere can bid on the social housing, and often do, and are allocated.

“Surely these properties should be reserved for local people only and should be designated as rural exception sites.

“Time and time again we see families from other areas allocated our social housing, causing great concerns for local residents, especially when their own children have to move into towns because they can’t afford the private rent in villages. Then we have the problems from those that have moved from urban areas into our small villages, complaining that there isn’t a bus service – no shops, no doctor’s surgery.”

Stanley to represent Dorset on youth parliament A student from The Sir John Colfox Academy has been elected as the county’s new Member of Youth Parliament.

Stanley Bowden beat two other electoral candidates to secure the majority of the 5,762 votes cast by students.

were elected deputies. The election results were announced at a ceremony at County Hall in Dorchester.

New homes backed despite concerns

Plans to build four new homes east of Fairways at West Bay have been given the go-ahead.

Dorset Council members have now approved the application to build four properties off Station Road.

The initial plan for five homes to be built at the site was refused by councillors in April 2020 over fears the buildings would be ‘incongruous’.

Despite the new, scaledback application now being approved, the development has still met with criticism.

In a letter sent to Dorset Council, Charles Wild of the Bridport Environment Group said that ‘the absence of affordable housing in this proposal does not justify the visual impact’ on the Jurassic Coast and the nearby Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Bridport Town Council’s planning committee members also opposed the application for four homes, claiming that it falls outside of defined development boundaries.

The committee members also claimed that vehicular

access and egress from the site would be ‘dangerous’ and that the new homes will have no provision to fit solar panels.

Despite the concerns and objections, Dorset Council approved the new application, stating that development must start within the next three years.

The council’s approval for the new properties requires the developers to mitigate the impact of construction on the area’s biodiversity.

Developers are also required to submit separate plans for lighting installations at the site to

the local planning authority.

A planning officer’s report on the new development of four homes said: “New hedging and trees will enhance the setting of the development on a site which at present has no landscaping.

“The proposed materials and designs will create a varied street scene which is considered to be a slight improvement over the previously approved scheme and as such would not be harmful to the character of the area or the wider landscape.”

A solar scheme covering 40 acres of farmland near Maiden Newton, producing enough green energy to power 4,800 homes, has been submitted to Dorset Council.

Energy company Environmena want to build a 40-acre 11.8 MW solar installation on two fields at Cruxton Manor Farm, which is 0.7km south-west of Dorchester Road on the A356.

The plan is one of almost 1,000 solar farms in the planning pipeline across the country to help provide green energy.

Environmena says that the installation is not only vital to meet the government’s sustainability targets but secure the UK’s future renewable energy supplies, not least in the face of global threats from incidents like the current war in the Ukraine.

Renewable energy is also a vital resource in tackling the rising cost of energy which is having a huge effect on household spending.

In addition to creating jobs, use of a local supply chain will provide a significant economic benefit to the

local area which should not be underestimated.”

However, the plan has been met with some concerns from Dorset Wildlife Trust, The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership and Maiden Newton Parish Council among others, who would not approve the scheme in its current form.

A statement from Maiden Newton Parish Council reads: “Maiden Newton Parish Council agree in principle to the application of the solar farm but given the amount of construction traffic that

this development will require on the small narrow lanes and its impact on the local community we cannot support the proposal to install ground-mounted solar panel photovoltaic solar arrays, substations, inverter stations, security fencing, access tracks, landscaping and other ancillary infrastructure in this location.

“The council would like to point out that there has been a lot of work within the community to assist with flood alleviation with the maintaining of gullies and grips, this will all be lost with the number of oversized vehicles that will be using these routes on a daily basis until it has been constructed.

“The chosen route is also part of Nation Cycle Network 26, which is a frequently used route by the visitors to the area, the local community and many children. This will impact on the safety of this route.

“Should the planning authority support this application then a more safe and suitable access to the site will need to be arranged.”

Concerns over access route for increased traffic Kingston Russell resident Nick Jones wrote to Highways England raising concerns that the proposed access route uses the unsuitable Greenford Lane to deliver the ‘hardware’ to the site from the A35.

He said: “Highways England have not been approached, judging by the submitted documentation, probably due to the distance from the A35 to the site.

“This is despite the extension to the reservoir at Bredy Hut that occurred in 2019-21 requiring a complete

reconfiguration of the access point at Long Barrow Farm – directly opposite the Greenford Lane turning.

“That turning has remained unchanged in decades and, I would suggest, is not geared up to the proposed size and volume of traffic.”

Richard Brown of Dorset AONB landscape planning officer, said: “Due to the nature and significance of landscape and visual effects, which in my opinion cannot be

adequately moderated, there is a clear conflict between the application and the AONB’s primary purpose, this being the conservation and enhancement of the area’s landscape and scenic beauty.”

Your chance to voice views on village changes West Dorset MP Chris Loder has urged West Dorset residents, especially around Cerne Valley and Piddle Valley, to attend and engage in the Boundary Commission’s upcoming hearing at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester on Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1.

The Boundary Commission for England is proposing that the villages of Sydling St Nicholas,

Godmanstone, Cerne Abbas, Minterne Magna, Piddletrenthide, Piddlehinton and Buckland Newton transfer to the North Dorset constituency of Gillingham, Blandford and Verwood.

Mr Loder said: “This is one of the few opportunities for local residents affected by this change to share their opinion with the Boundary Commission about their proposals,

especially if they think their village should remain in the same constituency as Dorchester.”

Under current plans set out by the Boundary Commission, the areas immediately surrounding Cerne Abbas and Puddletown would be absorbed by the North Dorset constituency under new constituency boundaries set to take effect from 2024.

Concern over raw sewage discharge

Gallons of raw sewage was discharged into the sea at Burton Bradstock, West Bay, Seatown and Charmouth on March 16 when storm overflows released wastewater at the Wessex Water sites to prevent properties from sewer flooding after heavy rainfall.

Raw sewage overwhelmed underground networks and was dumped into the sea.

Charity Surfers Against Sewage said there had been 400,000 sewage discharges into UK waterways in 2020, and it had collated more than 150 health reports of people becoming unwell after entering the water.

A spokesperson from Surfers Against Sewage said: “Sewage pollution is being poured into our blue

spaces at an alarming rate and water companies are getting away with it.

“In 2020 alone, sewage was released into the environment over 400,000 times equating to 3.1 million hours of discharge.

“We’ve called on the government to address this sewage scandal.

“We’ve reported the health risks this pollution puts on all water users.

“We’ve exposed the regulators and testing regime for ignoring the truth. Now we need to take our message to

#EndSewagePollution straight to the doors of water company HQs.” Wessex Water said the waste that was emptied off the Dorset coast on Wednesday was ‘highly diluted’ although provides information to local councils, Surfers Against Sewage and others when storm overflows operate that could ‘potentially affect bathing waters and inland swimming sites’.

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “We’re committed to completely eliminating the discharge

of untreated sewage, starting with storm overflows that discharge most frequently and those that have any environmental impact.

“Every month we’re investing more than £2.5million to reduce storm overflows, with £150million being spent between 2020 and 2025.

“In an ideal world we wouldn’t have storm overflows at all.

“They are a legacy from the past to protect properties from flooding which have no place in the 21st century.”

A National Day of Action on Water Quality is being organised by charity Surfers Against Sewage on April 23 to protest against the use of CSOs by water companies.

The protest against Wessex Water is being held in Bath.

Campaigners make a STAND against homes plan Campaigners against plans for 4,000 homes north of Dorchester will recreate one of Thomas Hardy’s most memorable scenes, The Skimmity Ride from the Mayor of Casterbridge, with effigies of a property developer and town planner in a protest march through the town on April 2. STAND wants everyone to meet at Maumbury Rings at 10am.

A STAND spokesman said: “Anyone who cares about the future of the county town should think seriously about making their voices heard.

There will be music, speeches and, of course, that Skimmity ride.”

Sometimes referred to as a Skimmington Ride, this rural tradition was intended to heap shame on adulterers or other miscreants.

Effigies of the offending couple would be strapped to a donkey and paraded through the village. In the novel, effigies of Lucetta and Henchard are tied back-to-back on the donkey. Organisers say the ride will draw attention to Dorset Council’s plans to ‘desecrate’ the very countryside which inspired so much of Hardy’s writing.

Early adopter of permaculture flying

For Pat Bowcock, 70, one of her greatest thrills has been the acquisition of a shiny new twin tub which runs off her solar panels and wind turbine. This is a big win.

Pat, a former dispensing receptionist, arrived on the five-acre site in Litton Cheney 21 years ago, having become drawn to the ethics of permaculture.

Aged 48, having brought up two children and recently divorced, she was looking for a different way of life – one that wouldn’t cost the earth both figuratively and literally.

It wasn’t a widespread ideal back then, this lowimpact lifestyle. But in recent years we’ve all had to consider ways to reduce our imprint on the planet and Pat is light years ahead of the curve, having lived off grid since June 3, 1999.

“I was idealistic about how it would be,” she said. “I hadn’t really grown much in the past and I hadn’t built a shelter since I was seven.

“But I drew up a permaculture design in those first three months on the site.

“I didn’t miss anything about my old life at first. It was so quiet, such a relief.

“People come here and they also fall in love with it. They are idealistic about it too. Of course it’s wonderful, incredible. But running any business isn’t without stress.

“I’ve learned patience and trust. Things get done.”

Pat had taken courses in permaculture, including one at Kingston Maurward, and was on the lookout for land in Ireland when the site, which she has called Ourganics, came on the market, as a pony paddock.

“It’s just under five acres of ancient watermeadow,” she said. “There’s a high

water table and clay, very good for growing but no good for animals.

“I decided to buy it as my parents were getting older and I wanted to be here for them. I still go back to Ireland whenever I can because I love it there. The air is very light.”

At first, Pat lived in an old caravan while she

established her market garden and dug channels for the water to feed the site. “That’s the only time I’ve had major equipment up here. For the most part I rely on sharing equipment, so I welcome people with a strimmer, for example.

apple juice. There’s no point us all having these things if we can utilise the sharing economy.”

Once the groundwork was done, Pat set about building her home, affectionately known as The Shed.

“We called it The Shed, after someone said, ‘What a lovely shed’ when it was

first built,” she smiled.

The Shed is a gorgeous, cosy space with a kitchen, living area and bedroom with lovely handmade patchwork quilts, a woodburner and a few electricals, running off solar and wind power stored in batteries outside.

It’s comfortable, clean and welcoming. But it’s taken

time to establish and there was a time when Pat started to miss small parts of the life she had left behind.

She said: “I began to miss certain things, such as hot running water, a washing machine and a fridge and freezer. I’m only missing the freezer now, as I’ve got all the others.”

The River Bride flows along the bottom of the site, past a little area people call ‘the beach’, perfect for paddling. A stream fed by a spring in the village flows into the top of the site and along a channel with little sluice gates to control the water table.

Water is pumped from a well, filtered and boiled.

Pat said: “It would have been astronomically expensive to connect to the mains water system. So I came up with another way.”

There’s always another way. And there are always people willing to help.

Many people come here to help out as volunteers, or attend one of Pat’s courses in permaculture. It’s a stunning site, created over years of hard work, with many surprising features tucked away in its various areas.

“I’m very, very grateful for what I have,” said Pat. “I feel deeply privileged.

What we see today is the result of a lot of hard work by many people and I’m very grateful to them all.

I’m especially grateful to my parents, who embraced my way of life wholeheartedly. They were absolutely fantastic, supporting me when they sometimes didn’t really understand what I was doing.”

Pat is accompanied everywhere by Sam, a nine-year-old lab-collie cross.

She said: “Sam is my right-hand man. He looks after the chickens, keeps n CONT ON NEXT PAGE

the fox away and lets me know when people are coming. He’s a delight – always ready to play, but he’s a great worker.

“He makes sure the chickens don’t go where they shouldn’t.

“Occasionally he’ll let me have a rabbit he’s caught, though not always. He loves people.

“During lockdown he sat at the gate for a month, wondering where everyone had gone.”

There is a mixed flock of chickens here, who provide eggs to eat and to sell, and many top bar hives for the bees.

This year Pat also hopes to keep some of the bees in trees and baskets.

Veg and flowers grow in abundance in the 27-metre polytunnel and fruit on the trees in the orchard area, which surrounds a dewpond.

Pat mainly eats seasonal produce, with the odd illicit chunk of chocolate or glass of wine.

She sometimes swaps her produce for local meat, and sometimes buys it.

Swapping and bartering is a big part of this lowimpact life.

Pat said: “I wanted to live off-grid because I wanted to lower my imprint on the planet, take fewer of its resources.

“It’s something we can all do if we just use less.

“Having bought this land I decided to live off what the land gave me. I aim to be an ethical eater.”

Even in the depths of winter she works the land, growing food.

“I really love the winter,” she said. “It has a beauty

of its own. I grow seasonal veg flowers and fruit and bottle the fruit to eat in winter. I have grown melons in the polytunnel.

It’s mostly salad in here, with a lot of seeds growing on shelves.”

Pat uses the produce to not only feed herself and people who come to help and come to stay. She also sells all she produces – the honey, the eggs and the

flowers too.

She said: “There are a few things I have to buy, such as fuel for the car, rice, chocolate and wine, though I have made wine from rhubarb and apple – it was revolting!

“I eat what I grow and buy locally.

“I wasn’t going to do animals, as it gets so muddy here, the clay sticks in their feet. Even

donkeys can’t handle clay.”

A woodland at the bottom provides plenty of willow to sell and the polytunnel acts as a dining room, sitting room and meeting room, and a venue for a sewing group Pat’s involved in. It’s a very useful space – and houses the shower, twin tub and more.

The site has been used for weddings and there’s an area of open space where guests can camp, as well as the caravans dotted about the site.

It’s a chance for others to experience the life Pat craved all those years ago and which still brings her so much happiness. It’s still a quiet life. But one which she welcomes guests into with open arms and good coffee.

“I don’t think about the future, I just get on with everyday life,” said Pat. “It’s as stressful as I allow it to be. Everything always gets done.” n Pat offers tours and visits to groups including schools, clubs and individuals, and courses in permaculture. Call 01308 482455 to book.

Violin restorer takes a bow with the

A violin restorer from Cattistock is bringing a cello which belonged to Thomas Hardy’s grandfather back to life.

Hardy’s grandfather, also called Thomas, played in the Stinsford Quire between 1800 and 1840.

Over the last six decades, John Dike has been bringing back alto, soprano and tenor radiance into the violinfamily instruments he is asked to restore.

He learned the alchemy of his craft at the London College of Furniture in the late 1970s under the guidance of Patricia Naismith and restoration under Harold Herne.

And it was John who was the obvious choice to join Wessex folk musician Colin Thompson to look at the cello.

For several months, John has been working his magic on the instrument, which has been resting at The Hardy Society since it was bequeathed by the late Frank Herring.

John said: “The history of the instrument is fascinating because of its association with the family of Thomas Hardy.

“The restoration of the cello has been difficult owing to the amount of worm damage.

“I’ve replaced some areas with new wood, patched and strengthened other areas and now the instrument is back together and hopefully, will be soon playing again.”

It was inevitable Thomas Hardy would foster a deep love of music, given his father and grandfather, both named Thomas, were musicians and together with Uncle James, were members of the Stinsford Quire, playing regularly in the gallery above the nave.

In 1847, the Stinsford Church Band played at John and Mary Antell’s wedding at Bockhampton,

where the young Thomas Hardy, aged just seven, played second fiddle alongside them.

The project started after Colin Thompson received an email from chairman of The Hardy Society, Dr Tony Fincham, about a cello which was suspected to have been played in the Stinsford Church Band.

Colin said: “This instrument had been

donated to The Hardy Society from the estate of the late Frank Herring of Herrings Art Supplies of Dorchester.

“Frank acquired the instrument from Hubert Gale, a carpenter who lived in Orchard Street and had a workshop in a three-storey building opposite Greys School Passage, who was related to the Antell and Hardy

“John and I were able to examine the inside of the cello using an endoscope with a built-in camera.

“The first observation was that the cello was well made with craftsmen like blocks and linings.

“We found an old repair patch fitted to strengthen worm damage in the upper right bout and the belly which had appeared to have less worm damage but was in fact riddled.

The holes had been filled and well disguised on the outside.

“Now came the real revelation, a small oval repair label reading ‘N Sparkes repairer Bristol’

and even more exciting was the writing in black ink on the underside of the belly – ‘Repaired by N Sparkes for J Antell 1892’.

“On the outside is a label addressed Mr J Antell, Puddletown and on the inside ‘when empty please return to N Sparks, 9 Stuart Street. Barton Hill Road’.”

Nathanial Sparks was of course Hardy’s cousin and

John Antell was a musician and poet who played in the Stinsford Church Band.

The Thomas Hardy Society secretary Tracy Hayes said: “We can confirm the cello belonged to Thomas Hardy the first and now this historical piece has been restored, we are hoping to house it in the Dorset History Centre.”

£13k windfall for healthcare projects A crop of creative ideas put forward by NHS staff in the Dorset Healthcare’s Dragons’ Den competition has secured more than £13,000 to give patients extra support.

Some 1,300 people voted for their favourite suggestions and the top five have now earned a cash injection to make them a reality.

Combat Social Isolation of the Elderly received £4,710 which will be used to trial a weekly group to bring people together and Healthy Body and Brain was awarded £3,548 which will go to the Memory Assessment Service to establish a support group for people with mild cognitive impairment.

Dragons’ Den invites staff from across the trust’s community and mental health services to come up with fresh ideas to improve patient care – using evidence of likely benefits and showing how such projects could be sustained over a long period.

Activity day fosters relationships between families A family day for the fostering community was held at the South West Regional Assessment Centre (SWRAC), near Dorchester.

Some 18 families attended, with 21 adult carers and 37 children aged from six weeks old to 17.

A scavenger hunt kicked off the proceedings followed by kite flying, arts and crafts plus pizza making at lunchtime. The children and young people were able to enjoy and engage with nature, with some even taking the resident goats and donkeys for a stroll.

Relationship-building was the focus of the day and carefree fun for the children, whilst creating an opportunity for the families to connect with each other in-person.

Cllr Andrew Parry, Dorset Council briefholder for Children, Education, Skills and Early Help, said: “Family days like this are so important because not only did it give our fostering community a chance to build relationships with each other, it gave us a valuable opportunity to hear directly from those being fostered.

“So much fun was had by all and the feedback we’ve received has been really positive. I was delighted to be invited to come along and join in the activities.”

Brewers’ new discount card for key workers Dorset brewer Hall & Woodhouse has introduced a discount card for essential workers to use in its pubs.

In this corner of the county the Blue Light Card can be used in The Duchess of Cornwall in Poundbury and The Red Lion in Dorchester among others, giving a 15% discount to essential and public sector employees as a ‘thank you’ to for their community service since the start of the pandemic.

Check list to avoid being sold a pup People who are looking for a new dog are being asked to run through some basic checks before buying a puppy to help prevent illegal breeding.

Dorset Council Trading Standards and Environmental Health Teams are raising awareness of the multimillion-pound puppy breeding trade.

Since covid-19, there has been more demand for dog ownership and as such a significant increase in selling illegal puppies with the cost of puppies soaring.

This has become a lucrative market resulting in puppies being sold from unlicensed breeders, too often without any consideration of the welfare and environmental needs of the puppy.

Cllr Laura Miller, Dorset Council briefholder for customer and community services, said: “We hope that residents will support our efforts to make a change in the illegal dog breeding market.

“Many families across Dorset have dogs, including myself, and the thought of them being mistreated is awful.

Simple, natural and beautiful: The

A Simpsons sky is turning the Chick family’s 900 acres into a breathtaking scene on a warm March day.

The land at Compton Valence, where they’ve farmed for three generations, is dotted with sheep about to lamb, new life springing up everywhere you look.

The surrounding area, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and part of the AONB, is particularly head-turning on this sort of crisp, spring day. It’s the perfect place to sit and remember a loved one and an inspired choice for a burial ground.

The Dorset Downs Natural Burial Meadow has been evolving over the last two years, after Jeremy and Tessa Russell, (nee Chick), won planning permission to use the land for interments.

Here, you can be buried whatever your religious beliefs, in the simplest and most natural of ways. You can even be buried with your pet.

Former Army officer Jeremy adores this landscape, and two years ago he set about making a part of it a haven for burials. The wheat was cut, the soil topped up and it was reseeded with wildflowers, with the aim of providing a really special, low-key, beautiful place for people to be interred.

A small wood is already on the site, which was planted 25 years ago.

“It took a while to get going,” said Jeremy, who worked all over the world before settling in Dorset, keen to see his three children grow up. “We are planning another wood at the top to shield the site from the road. In 15 years’ time this place will look very different.”

In the summer the burial meadow is quite a spectacle, with poppies, cornflowers and daisies waving in the breeze.

The sheep sometimes graze on the meadow, where there are no headstones, no sign people are buried here. However GPS lets people know to within a centimetre or two where to go, and there will be names up on oak

memorial plaques in the memorial shelter and small plaques in the new woodland.

The idea of creating this sort of idyllic resting place was born when the Leedham family from Wales were looking for an alternative to traditional burials. James Leedham’s Auntie Betty had retired to Dorset and loved the countryside, Thomas

inspired choice for a burial ground Hardy, trees and woodlands and so the family wanted to reflect that.

But even the woodland burial services they found seemed too commercial: there were regimented rows of graves, and there were all these add-on services which seemed contrary to what they wanted, which was a simple burial somewhere beautiful.

Twenty years later and the family firm oversees ten sites around the country.

Dorset Downs is one of their newest, and all have the same sustainable ethos – you won’t find florist’s

foam or polythene wrapping here. The use of natural materials such as willow is actively encouraged.

Living life with more sustainability Environmental charity campaigners are calling for West Dorset residents to support their cause.

Sustainable Dorset, based in Dorchester, works throughout the county to increase people’s awareness of and involvement with sustainable living projects.

These projects include sustainable transport schemes that promote cycling over driving in suburban areas and sustainable food projects, including a community garden in Poundbury.

Sustainable Dorset also works to support the founding of Transition Town schemes, where local schemes aim to combat climate change and the use of Peak Oil. A charity spokesman said: “Sustainable Dorset is the central hub of all sustainable and resilient activity across the county.

“We aim to raise awareness and so increase interest and involvement in sustainability.

“We connect people and communities, supporting individual well-being,

community enterprises and businesses in order to nurture resilience.

“We bring together the many and diverse sustainable activities across the region, and showcase to the world at large what we are already achieving.

“We provide sensible advice on how you can live more sustainably, and more importantly, we can connect you with projects and like-minded people across the county who are already on that journey and can provide

practical ways to be involved.”

Plenty of treasure to be found hidden in rubbish

Today, I am on the hunt for the skeletons of Pink Sea Fans and driftwood. We are on the Chesil Beach at Abbotsbury.

Like most, this beach has a very different character in the summer than the winter. Unlike most, it is not overtaken by buckets and spades but fishing rods and tents.

Of course, the Chesil is famous for its pebbles being curated by the methodical tide and wild hands of the waves from the largest at Portland to the smallest at West Bay. Some beachcombers

collect particular pebbles here, some are drawn to naturally striped ones or ones with animal shapes.

As Stocks and Lewin write in The Book of Pebbles ‘a favourite pebble can become a talisman, a minor household god’.

Scanning the strandlines, I always pick up some rubbish during beachcombing and it seems the more litter you pick up the more treasure you are rewarded with.

Having said that, it’s not really possible at this beach

to have one bag for rubbish and one for treasure as the two are often entwined.

Until I moved to West Dorset I had no idea that we had coral around our seas. Or that coral is classed as an animal and not a plant as it does not make its own food.

Fishermen’s line is one of the things to rip coral from the seabed. The coral I find is called Pink Sea Fan or Warty Gorgonians; they are dead, sadly, but still beautiful. Here I have used the coral in the peacock

collage as a new skeleton, this time for a bird.

I find driftwood fascinating. I love the odd shapes tide and time have wrought and the more blanched the better!

Driftwood crafts have blossomed in recent years, and I often see driftwood Christmas trees for sale in season. On Facebook there is a great group called Driftwood Around the World which feeds my addiction when the weather is cautionary.

Due to the stones and shingle makeup of the beach, it is hard walking.

Dogs are welcome all year up to the Tank Teeth boundary which is locally known as the Dragon’s Teeth.

Talking of teeth, please watch what your dog eats during your visit as occasionally there can be fishing hooks caught up in the debris.

Making a bee-line for the stinking hellebores Sally Cooke lives in Tolpuddle with her husband, two grown up sons and her spotty rescue dog. Sally will be writing seasonal pieces for The West Dorset Magazine and you can see her work, Sparrow in a Puddle at Instagram.com/ sparrows.puddle.photos The increasing warmth of the sun over the past few weeks has encouraged the bumblebees out of hibernation and into my garden looking for food.

The sound of them buzzing between the flowers looking for nectar and pollen is one of my favourite signs of spring.

My March garden has plenty for them, they love the crocuses, the freely spreading grape hyacinths, the polka-dot lungworts and the unfortunately named stinking hellebores.

They’re not the only pollinators enjoying the spring flowers though as the sunshine also brings out other bees, some early peacock and brimstone butterflies and that furry bee-mimic with its long straight proboscis, the beefly.

The joy of working in the garden again after the winter fills me with optimism and, as I think ahead to the summer I’m excited by the promise offered at the garden centres by packets of seeds and bedding plants.

But, although all the labels offer us colourful and

attractive plants for our gardens, flowers are not all equally attractive to bumblebees and other pollinators.

Monty Don of Gardeners’ World caused huge controversy a few years ago when he described begonias as ‘repulsively ugly’, whether you agree with him or not, a flowerbed full of them provides no nourishment for the bees.

Pansies, petunias and busy lizzies also provide little or no pollen or nectar.

There are of course many wonderful summer flowers that will make our gardens look spectacular but will also fill them with pollinators.

A little bit of careful thought when choosing can make all the difference, look out for labels that say ‘perfect for pollinators’ and look and see what the bees are enjoying in your friends’ gardens!

One last thought, please teach your children not to be afraid of bees, if one accidentally wanders into your house this spring, just calmly escort it out again.

Down to earth PAGAN VIEWS

I had been commissioned to take some photos at St Michael’s church in Stinsford.

The project was to catalogue some restoration work by local stonemason Rebecca Freiesleben (abbotsbury stonework.com).

The photos included a carving of St Michael defeating the devil in the shape of a dragon. From a Pagan point of view the dragon can be seen as representing the mass of ‘heathen’ religions before Christianity held sway. All a heathen means is a ‘person not belonging to a widely-held religion’.

Once the job was over, I had a wander around the corner. It really did feel like this tree tapped me on the shoulder. Its presence is spine-tingling! Then a lady and her daughter appeared and seeing me staring at the tree recounted the story behind it.

The lady pointed up to a rope which blended in so well with the loops of branches that I would not have noticed it without her intervention, saying: “Those ropes once tethered Thomas Hardy’s horse of the day. They were lifted up high as the tree grew… that’s how the story goes!”

I guess horses gave way to automobiles, so they just left the ropes hanging there... Next, she pointed me in the direction of a ‘secret door’ into the tree’s garden. I was

hesitant to go but you don’t question ladies who suddenly appear and tell you just what you had been wondering about!

Whether this tree is THE TREE which gave its name to his book Under the Greenwood Tree, I do not know. But Hardy used Stinsford church as the

model of Mellstock Church in said novel.

St Michael’s was his parish church. He was christened in the font and grew up to teach Sunday school here and now this is where his heart is buried. He once described this area as ‘the most hallowed spot’.

St Michael’s is a beautiful, rural, mostly 13th century church. The church is immediately off the A35 roundabout at the junction with the B3150. Turn onto the minor road towards Kingston Maurward College and gardens and then right on to Church Lane .

Utter smut! The shocking truth about plants FORAGING

I promised this in the first edition of WDM, so here it is.

Be warned, however, it is for neither the squeamish nor the prudish. Until the late 17th century, the very idea that plants were sexual organisms and that flowers were sexual organs was absurd at best and blasphemous at worst.

Surely God would not allow these emblems of innocence to involve themselves in such base behaviour? But, for the most part, they do. It was not until the early years of the 19th century that any discussion of this matter outside botanical circles was considered remotely acceptable.

Most plants have male and female flowers on the same plant, while others come as male plants and female plants – dioecious plants, the word meaning ‘of two houses,’ More shocking than sex in plants, is that they can suffer from sexually transmitted diseases, caused, you guessed it, by the

appropriately named Smut Fungi. Smuts are common, and there is every chance that your garden plants have, at one time or another, suffered these ‘wages of sin’.

One group of plants, the perennial and dioecious Campions, suffer mightily from this pestilence, most commonly with the smut fungus, Microbotrium violaceum, on Red Campions.

The fungus infects the entire aerial plant, then when it flowers, produces its conspicuous black spores on the anthers (the male organ), replacing the

expected yellow of pollen.

The spores are transmitted to an uninfected plant of either sex with gay abandon, via the normal routes followed by the pollen it has superseded. It will germinate on both sexes, and colonise both sexes. In any male plant, it will eventually produce spores on the plant’s anthers. If, however, it has infected a female plant, it cannot produce spores, because only males have the anthers on which they may be produced. The female flowers, with their female pistils, are useless to the fungus, even though

they are larger and thus potentially more productive of spores. To circumvent this seemingly impossible obstacle, the infecting fungus supresses the expression of female parts (pistils), and allows anthers to grow where none should be by removing the female plant’s normal suppression of male parts. Effectively, it forms a transsexual plant.

Red Campion is common in our hedgerows, so when they appear, do keep a look out for any with a blackened, sooty centre.

School helps with aid package to Ukrainians The Leweston School community joined forces to send essential aid to families in need in Ukraine as it became a ‘drop-off’ point for the lorry en route to Poland.

Year 12 student Julia said: “Thousands of Ukrainian civilians had to flee from their country. Most of them found asylum in Poland, where residents are being offered transport and accommodation.

People all over Europe are responding to this devastating time, and are donating vast amounts of food, hygiene essentials

and clothing. For this reason, our Leweston community organised a collection of the most necessary products such as

food, toiletries, medical equipment, children’s clothing. We are hoping that our donation will support and inform the

women and children at the border, that they are not alone. The number of items given was massive, which was truly heartwarming to see.

“Sixth form students volunteered to help with the segregation and packing donated items in Sherborne. This opportunity reminded us that selfless help is fullfeeling and wonderful.

“Especially during time of Lent, it’s good to reflect on our own actions and how we can make positive contribution to the wider community.”

Students digging in for Chelsea date Horticulture students from West Dorset are digging in to create an exhibition for the Chelsea Flower Show.

Poundbury Gardens near Dorchester is supplying shrubs and herbaceous perennials, as well as supporting staff, for Kingston Maurward College’s submission, named The Space Within Garden.

The students’ submission will appear in the Sanctuary Garden category at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May. Kingston Maurward’s horticultural students have been developing design ideas and potting up and growing plants donated by Poundbury Gardens, while wildlife and conservation students are building a sanctuary wall using reclaimed timber from the college estate.

Platform structures for use in the exhibition garden are being built by the college’s welding, fabrication and blacksmithing department.

A spokesman for Poundbury Gardens said the company’s donation to the garden exhibition forms part of the company’s initiative to support 15 community planting projects in celebration of

its 15th anniversary.

They added: “Designed by Kingston Maurward’s own garden designer, Michelle Brown, The Space Within Garden takes inspiration from the gardens of the French Riviera, combining styles from Europe and Dorset.

“In keeping with the project’s zero waste philosophy, Mike Burks,

managing director of The Gardens Group, which operates Poundbury Gardens, is supplying around 30 varieties of plants and recycled pots that have been brought back to the garden centres by customers.

“Sourced locally, the herbaceous perennials include Omphalodes Cherry Ingram, Heuchera Green Spice and Tiarella Pink Skyrocket, with Buxus sempervirens, Fatsia japonica Variegata Sarcococca Ghorepani.”

The Space Within Garden will be among 12 Sanctuary Gardens on show at RHS Chelsea Flower Show from Tuesday, May 24 to Saturday 28.

More than one way to strip a lynchet I cannot agree with John Wright that strip lynchets were formed by ploughing (Down to Earth, February 25). On hillsides the top soil is quite thin. You would end up with three feet of top soil on the downhill side and raked chalk on the rest of the flat area. I would think it more likely that the top soil was removed, then the land levelled and then the top soil was put back.

Heartwarming response to refugee homes plea The Government’s launch of the Homes for Ukraine Scheme has been met with an unprecedented wave of support. Over 170,000 people have already expressed interest in housing a refugee family and I expect this number to rise significantly over the coming weeks. Sajid Javid’s announcement over that weekend of the 21 very poorly Ukrainian children having arrived in the UK to commence lifesaving treatment also made for heart-warming reading. n The Government’s Economic Crime Bill is also a massive step in turning off the taps for Russia’s economy. The Home Office has also raised an additional 35% tariff onto imported

goods from Russia and Belarus – on top of the hefty sanctions already in place.

While some may question the effect these sanctions have, they are indeed a very potent weapon to use.

Sanctions imposed after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 had already caused stagnation in the Russian Economy, and the sanctions imposed since the invasion will be crippling. n I want to thank everyone for their support in my campaigns to promote the cleanliness of our beaches, rivers and seas. The OFWAT investigation into Wessex Water announced two weeks ago is something I

very much welcome. I pursued both Wessex Water and South West Water in November and questioned rigorously the outflow statistics they provided. I hope this investigation will provide the impetus to invest in better technology to cut down on sewage discharge. n On March 31 and April 1, there will be a Boundary Commission hearing in Dorchester at the Corn Exchange.

This provides a further opportunity for local people to share their views on how the upcoming boundary changes due in 2024 might impact them, and to voice any opinions or concerns over the proposal, especially those

living in the Cerne and Piddle valleys who are proposed to transfer into the same constituency as Blandford, Gillingham and Verwood. n Last Tuesday, I attended a very moving unveiling of a memorial to Belgian Airman Jean De Cloedt who was helping the Royal Air Force delivering Spitfire planes across the country during the Second World War. In 1942, 80 years ago on Tuesday, in thick fog, his plane crashed into Lewesdon Hill in Broadwindsor and he was killed on impact. The memorial event was attended by members of his family from Belgium and Broadwindsor Primary School who shared memories of him.

We need to act fast to help Ukraine refugees As I just started to write this column a news headline appeared – ‘Three million Ukrainians flee conflict’.

Every hour thousands more join them. A few days ago I saw a news report on the last refugee train to leave Kyiv.

The desperation on the faces of so many was disturbing, especially as the huge crowd trying to leave became aware that the train was full. Already thousands have died.

All Ukrainians want is to be free and to be part of Europe.

Is this so unreasonable?

Now I want to do what I can to help. In Dorchester I’ve taken sacks full of blankets and essential supplies to the Prince of Wales First School who organised a donation point. I

have also helped persuade both Dorchester Town Council and Dorset Council to fly Ukraine’s flag.

Our country has a proud history of helping the victims of conflict. Of helping those fleeing conflict and persecution.

But this Conservative Government has a different approach. They have spent the last decade tightening the rules for refugees and asylum seekers. They made it just about as hard as they could for people escaping from Afghanistan.

It is shameful that we have had to drag the Government inch by inch towards making a real commitment to the Ukrainians now fleeing Putin’s war machine.

Even as the Russian missiles rain down the Home Secretary was dragging her feet by failing to open a fast and simple refugee scheme for Ukrainian refugees. Worse, she is pressing ahead with her AntiRefugee Bill that would criminalise any Ukrainians who come here to seek asylum.

The Government should withdraw that Bill.

It is a measure of how generous we can be that over 100,000 people have offered to house a refugee for up to six months.

The contrast with the attitude of

the Conservatives couldn’t be greater!

At last the Conservatives are taking meaningful measures against Putin and his cronies.

For years they have looked the other way as criminal money has poured into the UK and created “Londongrad”. This illegal money should be seized now.

Too many leading Conservatives have financial links with Russian interests.

No matter what has happened in the past this cannot be allowed to continue.

We must stand with Ukraine in their hour of need, help them to retain their freedom and provide a place of safety for refugees.

Food for thought over countryside changes Given the difficulties now facing the world, thought must be given to both the urbanisation of the countryside and importantly to how we in Britain approach food security. In terms of food production there is little doubt that farmers have been put in a difficult position by the agreements the Government has reached with New Zealand and Australia post-Brexit.

They give our small farmers dilemmas, both in making both a living as well as animal welfare.

But in terms of the continuing urbanisation of the countryside, something must change. At present in Dorset we have the developments in Dorchester and Bridport to

take into consideration. In both cases the present Government supports the developers to a degree that is unacceptable. 52% of developments within Dorset, the Cotswolds, the Chilterns and High Weld are within Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Over the last few years there has been an increase of developments within the AONB of 135%, but only 16% of those houses built in the AONB have been what is described as affordable. Of course we need more genuinely affordable housing, but it must also be where local people can find

work. This is made even more difficult in Dorset by the poor bus services, and the low pay offered to local workers. Urbanisation of the countryside is welcomed by developers due to relatively low land and construction costs, and they make vast profits at the expense of local people.

Meanwhile the Conservative Government continues with ever increasing U-turns, and now it would seem that local people will have even less say in how developments are agreed, especially at Town Council and Parish Council level.

An area can be deemed a Growth Area, which will be granted automatic outline permission. Or

what are described as Renewal Areas will have the statutory presumption of development and will be fast tracked. Lastly there will be Protected Areas, but these still not with an absolute prohibition of development. So much for consulting local residents; developers must be laughing all the way to the bank.

A great deal has been made of the value of the countryside given its help with mental health due to its relaxing aspect. In this respect the NHS certainly needs all the help it can get, as it seems to be at risk of collapsing under the intense pressure it’s currently under. It could completely disappear, as well might the BBC.

We can work together, but with conditions Chris Bowers, the Liberal Democrat advocate for a closer working relationship between Labour, Lib Dems and the Greens, has argued that it is unlikely that Labour can win the next General Election by itself.

Gaining the 120 seats it needs to have a working majority, he said in a recent Guardian article, “is a near impossibility in the current electoral landscape”.

I agree that the three parties need to work together in the run-up to the next General Election, but on three conditions.

First, that there is a national agreement.

I think it important that there is a quid pro quo attitude to any coordinated

approach to defeating the Tories, with no bullying of small parties at the local level by parties who feel they have a right to fight the seat. Any agreement should be done strategically and as objectively as possible.

Second, that this is a oneoff deal. Whilst such an agreement would secure decent press coverage for the Green Party at the national level, thus ensuring that the Green Party are not side-lined, this would not necessarily be the case locally. If a

local Green Party agreed to stand aside in a particular constituency on a regular basis this could quickly affect its support base and popularity. A General Election is a much higher profile event than local elections.

Third, it should be an agreement to achieve an agreed objective. Over and above the removal of a party with a large working majority after gaining just 43.6% of the vote, we need to ensure that such unfairness does not occur again. All three parties need to agree, therefore, that reform of our voting system through the introduction of some version of proportional

representation will be a priority for any new coalition government. This should not be a promise of a referendum on the issue, but an absolute pledge for reform prominent in all three election manifestos.

The next General Election may seem a distant event with all that is going on at the moment. In all likelihood it will be in May 2024, to coincide with the local elections, but it could be as late as December of that year. Two years is not long, however, to reach such agreement. We need to start thinking about it now. And who knows what scandal is lurking around the next corner that could force an early vote?

Offering light in a very dark world

This week in the news we have watched as men, old and young, have been reduced to heart-wrenching sobs.

Struggling to put into words the horror they are living through, and failing, as Ukraine is battered and bombed.

We have all watched, hearts in our throats, as we see men and women, old and young, desperate to protect others and keep body and soul together.

Mothers distraught, young soldiers crushed by what conflict looks like close at hand in residential areas. In the places people live, work, go to school and deliver their babies.

And it made me think of these words of Jesus, words of raw lament: “How often have I

desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!”

Words which seem to speak into the desolation and terror of these days.

This image of a mother hen, yearning to shield her little chicks from danger, is one we see even in the darkness of this time. For despite the horror and brutality of this vicious war, there are so many examples of light in the darkness, of people offering refuge, hope and kindness.

Think of those who have opened their homes to refugees, those who put themselves at risk in Russia to

protest, those who open their hearts in so many ways.

Don’t we need that image today – of a mother longing to gather her chicks, poignant and true for so many?

In St Mary’s Church, Bridport we have on display a painting entitled Soul by Soul and Silently by the artist Hugo Grenville.

(See Page 11).

The huge canvas depicts refugees in a battlescarred landscape reminiscent of the images we see daily on our TV screens. Among the displaced people, we see the crucified Christ taken down from the cross, a mother cradling his lifeless body.

This startling painting has become the focus for our

weekly prayer vigils for Ukraine and for all those suffering through war.

Our world is overwhelmed by such pain and suffering. God’s love and grace, glimpsed in the action of those who gather to themselves the lost and suffering like a mother hen, are signs of hope in the darkness of this hateful war.

Calling us to stand with others, help where we can and remain constant in prayer for those who live in fear, so they may also find refuge under the shadow of the wings of Jesus the mother hen.

It’s a shore thing: Top quality food

When scathing food critic the late AA Gill poured four vinegary stars of five over a Burton Bradstock beach café in a Sunday Times Magazine review in 2005 – the café quite literally became a destination overnight.

Out-of-town foodies travelled for miles to reach The Hive Beach Café to be swallowed whole by huge skies and rolling ocean while dining on fish soup, described by the famed critic as ‘not remotely grand, but tasting nicely of its constituent parts’ or the ‘particularly good’ ginger and spice cake.

And while this shoreline gem had always hummed with hungry locals, dog walkers and visitors, this little visit from Mr Gill while he was staying with his mate Billy Bragg up the hill, propelled the café into something gastronomical.

Steve Attrill and his GP wife Debbie took ownership of The Hive in 1991, and along with their daughters, Maisy and Emily, submerged themselves serving the finest seafood, embracing sustainability and taking care of their team of four.

As their reputation flourished, food awards followed and the team swelled.

Today Steve employs 175 people, mostly locals. The premises have grown too.

Now they own their own

They have also developed The Top Marquee and taken ownership of The Club House in West Bexington and The Watch House Café in West Bay, which sits just yards away from the golden cliffs

made famous by ITV’s Broadchurch.

This isn’t showboating but a real desire to meet the tidal wave of demand. The companies who supply The Hive Beach Café company feel the tides too.

Steve said: “It’s always been our mission to use locally sourced, sustainable ingredients and support local suppliers wherever possible, which is some task when you have a couple of hundred covers at lunchtime. We serve seafood and shellfish and support sustainable fishing methods.”

vegetables arrive from neighbouring Tamarisk Farm, cheese arrives from the West Country Farmhouse Cheesemaker at nearby Ford Farm and Steve buys vodka from Black Cow Vodka and raids the larders of Chesil Smokery and Lyme Bay Winery.

The café nestles on the sea shore amid the cliffs, a hugely popular part of the Jurassic coast, particularly with dog walkers. Steve caters for the dogs too – giving them their own menu with special biscuits, chewy bones and dogfriendly ice-cream.

Raising a glass or two to the joys of

Nestled in amongst the sheep-laden hillsides of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, lies a small but beautifully formed English country vineyard.

The village of Litton Cheney is home to the whispering, single estate wines of Bride Valley Vineyard – the brainchild of the late and very dearly loved wine legend Steven Spurrier.

In the late 1980s, Steven had the foresight to recognise that much of our Dorset coastline – in fact extending all the way to the

He realised the unique combination of clean and chalky terroir, the exceptional microclimate and the vineyard’s fine, south-facing slopes would provide the ideal conditions for cultivating the classic Champagne varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

‘Meunier’ in French means ‘miller’ and the leaves of the vine bear a whitish coating at peak growing season, almost as if they have been dusted with flour.

After meticulous preliminary investigations, numerous soil-sample analyses and following indepth consultations with renowned oenologist friends and associates in the trade, Steven chose the optimal sites across his wife Bella’s 200-acre sheep farm and ordered specially selected grafted vine clones from the Bourgogne, to capture the mineral-rich elegance of some of the world’s finest

Burgundies.

Planting on the super steep inclines proved beyond challenging, with much of the terrain being inaccessible by tractor, so planting on the accessible slopes was by machine for pinpoint accuracy. The couple’s steely determination to produce their very own estate wines prevailed and by 2011 a first harvest was gathered, entirely by hand.

The result was the 2014 release of three fine sparkling wines, made in the traditional Champagne method: a classic Blanc de Blancs, a Brut Reserve and Rosé Bella for summertime drinking, in Bella’s honour.

The summer of 2018 saw the vineyard achieve the optimal balance of ripeness and acidity thanks to perfect weather, and the estate yielded a record harvest, resulting in production of almost 60,000 bottles. They then made their first still wines: Dorset Chardonnay and Dorset Pinot Noir, released in 2019 to great

acclaim. Steven even released England’s first and only home-produced Crémant, with its unique Protected Designation of Origin status – showing the wine comes from a specific area and is made in a certain style.

Vineyard manager Graham Fisher says Dorset Crémant was a ‘wine of necessity’ after a cool ripening year in 2015, which meant that the base wine resulted in being ‘somewhat racy’. The conditions resulted in the signature, high acidity profile of other Crémants from France and Alsace).

Comprising predominantly Chardonnay (59%) to add acidity, structure and freshness, this is a white sparkling also made from the black grapes in the ‘traditional

Champagne trilogy’ featuring the red berry characteristics of Pinot Meunier (27%) - think wild strawberries and possibly rosehip and cranberry - and the delicacy of Pinot Noir (14%) which serve to contribute body, mouthfeel and allimportant texture to this supremely elegant wine.

Traditionally, Crémants are bone dry, with vibrant acidity, light to mediumbodied with different aromas.

Bride Valley Crémant has a bright, attractive pale lemon colour with a persistent fine mousse.

It won silver in the Wines of Great Britain Awards 2021 and is sold by “all good wine merchants worth their salt,” as Steven used to say.

Steven died last spring, just shy of his 80th birthday, leaving behind as an enduring legacy. Today, the tasting room is housed within a

charmingly converted stable block at Steven and Bella’s home in Litton Cheney – just off the A35 between Dorchester and Bridport – set against the

backdrop of enchanting, landscaped gardens, complete with an art gallery featuring Steven’s personal collection of pictures, artefacts and array of awards from half a century’s career.

The importance of colours in our food is crucial. Our brain uses colour to help us choose what our body requires in our diet. Our brains enjoy the food before consumption!

An interesting fact – in embryos, the first part of the neocortext to develop, is the part which will represent the mouth and tongue. Think of the importance in the ‘presentation’ of a meal, what would the brain tell you if everything was… brown! Grim thought. So, as I ventured out, the chilly spring rain dropped like silver nails, the clouds grey and taut, my mind craved ‘colour’...

Simple Tuscan Sausage Casserole Cook six sausages in a deep-frying pan, (I can recommend Washingpool’s pork sausages) when cooked and golden brown, add some onions, garlic, diced carrots, yellow cherry tomatoes, tin of cannellini beans and 500ml of stock.

Simmer for 10 minutes then add some finely chopped greens or Cavolo Nero. Serve with chunks of warm crusty bread.

Home-made bread is a cheesy feat Soda bread If you fancy making bread but really don’t want the faff of a yeasted loaf, this one is for you.

Frequently attributed to the Irish, although some Americans claim they thought of it first, it’s traditionally cooked in a skillet.

I use the gorgeous tasty cheddar cheese from www. openair dairy.co. uk and I love www. cerneabbas brewery. com beer – though you could use Guinness if you want the full Irish experience.

I always weigh my liquids as it is more reliable than measuring volume in a jug.

This easy un-yeasted bread doesn’t keep for longer than a couple of days but you can make it in super quick time – fling it in the oven and it’ll be out by the time you’ve said ‘Hello – can I take your coat?’

Sift flour, baking powder and spices into a bowl.

Add the syrup mixture and the egg and stir until well combined.

Thoroughly drain the apple slices and dry on kitchen paper. Add three quarters of them and all but 15ml/1 tablespoon of the chopped ginger to the cake mixture to the cake mixture and stir until evenly combined.

Add the buttermilk and remaining beer and mix quickly. You may need to add little more liquid as the flour varies in how much it absorbs (and if you use wholemeal you definitely will need more).

Pour the contents of the bowl on to a work surface and shape it into a round loaf approximately 5cms deep and 20cms in diameter. Put the loaf on to a baking tray lined with parchment.

Cut a deep cross into the top (this is to let the fairies out although it also makes sure that the bread cooks all the way through).

Spread on the beer and cheese mix.

Put it straight in the oven and cook for 30-35 minutes. It’s done when the base sounds hollow when tapped.

Take it out of the oven and allow it to cool for around 30 minutes.

There are several advantages to growing your own.

It allows you to select your desired texture, flavour and even colour, choosing types that never make it to the supermarket shelves.

Shop bought, non-organic potatoes are bombarded with pesticides, which are not needed for home grown plants.

This relative of deadly nightshade, tomato, petunia and tobacco, is one of the most productive crops you can grow.

Their cultivation has vocabulary that could leave the novice bewildered.

THE EYES HAVE IT: One potato, two potato...

maincrop, earthing up, blight and scab are all common terms associated with growing potatoes.

Let me explain...

Visit garden centres and nurseries in spring and you won’t fail to notice signs for ‘seed potatoes’, in this context ‘seed’ doesn’t mean the seed of potatoes, but instead refers to small, virus-free potatoes grown specifically for planting.

These are termed tubers.

Tubers are the way some plants retreat below ground during unfavourable growing conditions and lie dormant until the weather improves.

In the case of potatoes, the tubers are in fact modified, underground swollen stems complete with dormant buds. Garden centres typically have a dozen or

more cultivars on offer, but if you go to a specialist nursery, such as Mill House Nursery in Owermoigne, you will be able to browse over 80 from traditional white flesh types to those intriguing blue and pink kinds that retain their colour during cooking, adding creativity to your mash and chips.

The next interpretation required is selecting between the variously grouped potatoes for sale.

First earlies, second earlies and maincrop. Basically, first earlies need the shortest growing season, followed by second earlies then maincrop.

If you want ‘new potatoes’, select first or second earlies, otherwise maincrop should suit unless you’re a connoisseur.

Once home, the seed potatoes will need to be chitted.

Chit is an early 17th century term for shoot or sprout and is achieved by placing potatoes in the light, encouraging dormant buds, called eyes, to sprout. Once chits are a few centimeters in length, they are ready to plant.

Place c.10cm deep, 30cm apart and 60cm between rows, then observe over the next few weeks for signs of emerging shoots.

Once seen, lightly cover with soil, or horticultural fleece if a frost is predicted.

Once plants are 10-15cm tall, use soil from between the rows to earth them up.

This encourages underground stems to form increasing your crop.

Potatoes are largely untroubled by pests and disease.

Blight, a micro organism, originally grouped under fungi, is the most troublesome during warm and humid summers.

If you have alkaline soil your potatoes are likely to have scabby skins, fortunately it does not affect the crop or their flavour but would probably prevent you from winning first prize at a horticultural show. Potatoes are also successfully grown in containers, but alas space prevents me from detailing this here.

Cellist Arturo Serna at the Grandsen Classical music lovers will be in for a treat tomorrow evening, March 26, when Dorset County Orchestra performs in the Grandsen Hall in Sherborne.

Gifted soloist and the orchestra’s conductor, Arturo Serna will be performing Mozart’s Overture to the Marriage of Figaro, followed by Dvorak’s Cello Concerto culminating with the flourish of Schumann’s – Symphony No. 3 The Rhenish.

Dorset County Orchestra has long been active on the local orchestral scene, and usually perform three concerts a year, in varying venues across the county, but like many musical organisations during the past two years, have had to cancel or scale down their performances.

But now they are delighted to be bringing this programme to Sherborne, home to their resident and guest conductor John Jenkins.

Venezuelan-born British conductor Arturo Serna has a dynamic career as a conductor, cellist and teacher.

His musical journey began as a second generation graduate of El Sistema in Venezuela and was influenced by his mother, a violinist with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra.

After leaving Venezuela, he studied in France, Switzerland and England and holds a Masters in

conducting. Arturo currently conducts the Dorset County Orchestra, Exeter Symphony Orchestra, Axe Vale Orchestra and Shaftesbury Symphony Orchestra.

are now studying at world class conservatoires and university or play active roles in the music profession.

Leader Bärbel Glaser graduated with a diploma in orchestral music and a degree in music education from the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Academy, in Leipzig, in

former East Germany.

Now with more than 20 years’ experience as a freelance musician in Dorset and Hampshire, she leads the Dorset County Orchestra, Dorset Chamber Orchestra and Wimborne Chamber Orchestra plus many choral societies. She is also the leader of Magna Sinfonia and the Parry String Quartet and enjoys solo recitals, as well as teaching at local schools and privately.

John Jenkins joins the orchestra to conduct the Cello Concerto. He has led a varied musical career, from chorister at Bristol Cathedral, organ scholar of Durham University where he conducted both the

University College Orchestra and Chamber Choir. He has conducted the Derwent Singers, enjoys regular engagements as organist and continuo player, whilst his choral work with young people has embraced music courses across the country.

John was appointed organist of Sherborne School for Girls in 1992, becoming Director of Music in 1996, and co-conductor of the Sherborne Schools’ Symphony Orchestra and Choral Society.

Ta-da! Celebrating a hundred years

Thespians at Wessex Musical Theatre (WMT) are celebrating the centenary of their first stage performance with a medley of their best shows over the century.

The oldest theatrical society in Dorset will bring A Night at the Musicals to Weymouth Pavilion as a fitting tribute to its anniversary and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, between June 1 and 4.

Director and producer Paulie Beecroft said: “Having been a member of WMT on and off for over a decade, I really wanted to put on a medley of songs from some of our favourite musicals.

“There’s a huge variety of numbers included from over 16 different shows, all of which we have performed at some point over the past 100 years.

Our musical director, Alistair Dean, has done a fantastic job at arranging the medleys which show the diverse range of styles we’re able to perform.

“After a twoyear break due to the pandemic, everyone is really enjoying taking part in rehearsals again and we can’t wait to stage this production over the Jubilee weekend.”

Lane in 1921 under the name of Weymouth Operatic Society, some 139 shows have been staged, the annual musical in the Pavilion Theatre and a Christmas show in Hope Church, with just a short break during the Second

World War and the coronavirus outbreak.

Edgar was a great friend of Thomas Hardy, renting his home from the wordsmith and composing music for him. When Edgar died in 1938, he was honoured in the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Express as one of the most distinguished musical figures to be associated with Dorset.

In 1892 Edgar was

appointed organist and choirmaster at St Peters Church in Dorchester. He settled in Dorset, moving to a house in Cornwall Road with his new wife Sarah, who he married in 1893.

After the First World War in 1919, Edgar established the Weymouth operatic Society, which was merged with his Madrigal Society and became independent in 1921.

Edgar’s surviving manuscripts, letters and performance billings are held in the Edgar Lane Collection at the Dorset History Centre in

Dorchester.

Musical theatre has moved on dramatically since those early days and the Wessex Musical Theatre has adapted to staging modern musicals, not just operatic or classic shows.

A Night at the Musicals celebrates the society’s musical experience from Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore to Cole Porter’s Anything Goes

and from Roger and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma to Monty Python’s Spamalot.

An author has penned a book about the people who have lived near Chesil Beach throughout history.

Judith Stinton of Maiden Newton said she was inspired to write Chesil Beach: A Peopled Solitude while at Moonfleet Manor Hotel.

Mrs Stinton said: “I was sitting in the subtropical garden of the hotel in Fleet, hearing the sounds of the waves crashing against the pebbles on Chesil Beach, when the idea came to me: many shelves of books have been written about the beach – its geology, birds, beasts and flowers – but no one had yet explored the lives of the people behind it.

“Although it looks a lonely landscape, deserted and unchanging, there have always been people living there.

“Poaching, smuggling and wrecking were common practices, but the beach also sheltered undercover agents, experimental communities and hushhush weapon testing.

“D-Day soldiers left for France from this coast, and the Spanish Armada battled in its waters.

“The sea provides rich pickings, but could become an enemy, a devastatingly destructive force. The seabed is crowded with shipwrecks, and in 1824

the villages of Fleet and Chiswell were swept away overnight, in the worst disaster ever to hit Lyme Bay. Chesil Beach itself is always vulnerable – to exploitation as well as weather.”

Judith added: “This is my tenth book and has taken me five years to research, write – and, above all, to walk.

“One of my earlier books is called A Dorset Utopia and has recently been translated into Japanese

and is due to be published in May. “After deals fell through with a couple of publishers, I decided to publish Chesil Beach: A Peopled Solitude myself.”

Judith says the book is available from harlequinpress.net and from Abebooks. She added that several Bridport shops are stocking the book, including Cilla & Camilla, The Bookshop and Bridport Tourist Information Centre.

Poet Ben’s bid to fund book tour and land agent A young poet from Charminster has published a collection of his works.

Print shop owner marks ten years in business

A print shop owner is celebrating ten years in business.

James Collins established Print Shop Express Ltd in Lynch Lane, Chickerell, after a ten-year career in the film and television industry.

Mr Collins, who runs the business with his partner Holly, said: “I worked all over the world for the BBC and ITV, but a serious injury put this career on pause.

“After a few months with very limited mobility, and with the bills still needing to be paid, I leant on another skill set: graphic design. I set up a business called Simply Design, offering a design service to local businesses.

“It wasn’t long before I was being asked if I could offer a printing service, so I scraped together enough funds to purchase a small printer.

Using this and some trade contacts I already had, I began to offer a design and print service which quickly proved more popular than I could have imagined.

“I strongly believe that the young, fresh approach and

fast actioned responses to enquiries really helped establish a solid early foundation.”

Mr Collins went on to set up Print Shop Express Ltd, moving premises and developing a website offering print and signage work including vehicle graphics.

After setting up the business, Mr Collins said he put ‘every spare penny’ into developing

a new print plant.

Lyme Bay Holidays is under new ownership after it was acquired by leading operator Sykes Holiday Cottages.

The award-winning, family-run Lyme Bay Holidays will operate as a sister agency to Sykes from its office in Uplyme Road, Lyme Regis.

The business was established 40 years ago with the Matthews family at the helm since 1999.

It manages more than 330 holiday homes throughout Dorset and Devon and employs 20 people.

All will remain in post.

Reach for the skies: Sculpture takes

It’s an eye-catching sculpture paying homage to a former RAF base and its iconic Spitfire fighter aircraft as well as the ecology and birdlife for which the location has become known.

To The Stars! now sits in pride of place next to the Hurricane Spa at the luxury Silverlake holiday home development on the site of the former RAF Warmwell near Dorchester.

The sculpture is the creation of artist Nadine Collinson who won a competition staged by Silverlake and Sculpture by the Lakes.

Artists of all levels, from amateur to professional, were invited to submit innovative and sustainable designs to create a new, unique sculpture for Silverlake.

Habitat First Group, the family-owned development company, acquired the former RAF base and quarry in 2011 and broke ground five years later.

The estate’s military history has been of paramount importance in the subsequent development.

The logo of Silverlake is a Spitfire while each of the villages created on the site are named after pilots, male and female, stationed at RAF Warmwell.

All of the facilities at Silverlake are also named after aircraft including the Hurricane Spa. RAF Warmwell played a key role in the Battle of

Britain as home to both Spitfire and Hurricane squadrons before its later use by the United States Army Air Force’s Ninth Air Force.

A Wellington bomber, based at RAF Warmwell, also trialled early versions of Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bomb at Chesil Beach.

It was later used in the famous Dambuster raids by 617 Squadron on the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams in Germany’s Ruhr

Valley in May 1943.

The village of Crossways now exists on the site of the airfield.

A sizeable area of the RAF base, which was in operation from 1937 to 1946, later became Warmwell Quarry before being acquired by Habitat First Group.

The company, led by Red, Ruby and Rory Paxton, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021.

Under her watch the former Warmwell Quarry has been transformed into a spectacular nature reserve.

It’s home to around 150 bird species throughout the year including many red and amber listed species of conservation concern including Woodlark, Nightjar, Peregrine, Marsh harrier.

The large range of invertebrates include more than 60 species of bee and wasp, several red data book invertebrate and around 300 species of moth.

Other wildlife includes the rare Smooth snake, a wide range of bats and dormice, otters and great crested newts.

Nadine Collinson’s winning sculpture To The Stars! honours the connection between history and nature at Silverlake.

It also marks the celebration of Habitat First Group’s 25th anniversary by including 25 secret stars embossed and hidden amongst the trails of the birds on the sculpture.

Nadine said: “When I first saw the brief for the sculpture competition, I was totally inspired by Silverlake’s rich history as an RAF base, its logo depicting the Spitfire and the abundant ecology at this beautiful estate.”

Red Paxton, director of Habitat First, said: “All the entries were of an extremely high standard, but we were hugely impressed by Nadine’s design.

“The judges felt her sculpture truly encapsulated everything Silverlake represents.”

Simon Gudgeon, sculptor and co-owner of Sculpture by the Lakes, said: “There were many wonderful entries and it was a real pleasure to be part of the competition judging panel and to see the creativity and imagination it has inspired. I was impressed with Nadine’s subtle and graceful design, capturing the energy and movement of flight within its curves and lines.

“It’s a beautiful interpretation, which will make a fine and fitting addition to Silverlake.”

Education providers celebrate decade

A Poundbury firm focusing on education and social welfare is celebrating their ten-year anniversary next month – and opening a new office in Weymouth.

Whitehead-Ross Education and Consulting (WREC) was founded in 2012 to deliver a variety of high-quality skillsrelated programmes and social services provision.

Programmes include support for unemployed people to retrain and secure jobs, vocational training programmes, adult education and social services provision.

The firm opened its Poundbury office in 2018 to fulfil a contract with Dorset Council, promoting foster care to meet a huge need in the area.

They went on to offer after school courses for parents across West Dorset, offering them a chance to get creative with their children and have since undertaken a number of different contracts in this area.

TEAMWORK: The whole team get together

Managing director Ian Ross started the business part time alongside his role as an economics teacher. They had 14 staff at the time – there are now 84 based in Wales, Swindon, Brighton, Newquay, Worcester and Dorset.

Over the past four years, provision in Dorset has expanded to include traineeships for 16-24-yearolds, adult community learning with short courses in support work in schools, team leading, health & safety in construction (CSCS), employability courses as well as family and parenting support programmes and skills for young people within

schools. Details of all courses can be found at wrecltd.co.uk WREC is now opening a new centre in Weymouth, which will include a dedicated traineeship facility, meeting rooms, adult community learning room and administration office.

Ian said: “One of the most exciting programmes we are offering this year is the Malaga programme funded through Erasmus and Turing funding. The programme offers people a two-week work experience with a Spanish school or hospitality setting with accommodation, food and travel all fully funded. This is open to

anyone aged over 18.”

He added: “One of the reasons for our successful growth has been down to the benefits of networking and partnerships.

“Top tip – partner up and don’t go it alone. So much more can be achieved when working collaboratively.”

Anyone who would like to go and see the new centre and join the 10 year anniversary celebration is invited to an open day on Tuesday, April 19 from 2pm at Whitehead-Ross Education & Consulting, 52 St Mary St, Weymouth.

Harry McGrath scored his first goal for the Magpies to secure a vital win in their quest for survival, as they produced a blistering start to the second half to come from behind against fellow strugglers Kings Langley.

McGrath coolly slotted home on 51 minutes, when Olaf Koszela’s blocked effort rebounded into his path, to complete a fantastic comeback and enable them to return to Dorset with the spoils.

The Magpies’ performance in the second period was in stark contrast to their first half display, in which they mustered only one effort on target, and deservedly trailed to Bradley Wadkins’ 33rd minute strike.

Chances were at a premium in a tight opening, although Dorchester may have snatched the lead within the first minute had Stanley been able to make any connection with Billy

Bridport goalkeeper Josh Lucas was awarded the man of the match award against high-flying Mousehole.

However his heroic performance could not prevent another heavy defeat and his team’s relegation to Division One of the Toolstation League.

The match, played in hurricane-like conditions at Trungle Parc with driving rain and gale force winds, was effectively over as a

contest within the first 15 minutes as Mousehole went 3-0 up with goals from Louis Price, Callam McOnie and Mark Goldsworthy.

With the howling wind at their backs, the home side increased their cushion to 5-0 at the break, with McOnie adding his second and Hayden Turner also finding a way past the over-worked Lucas.

The Bees enjoyed their best spell at the start of the second half, and Riley Weedon reduced the arrears with a well-struck shot

which arrowed into the bottom corner. Town had further chances to score with long range efforts from Weedon and Mike Hill almost catching out the Mousehole keeper, and Ezra Osei-Kumi and Harry Burwood also going close.

The visitors tired in the last quarter of the game, allowing the hosts to score three more to make it 8-1, which flattered them somewhat.

McOnie completed his hattrick on 79 minutes, and Goldsworthy added a late pair to stake his own claim

for the match ball.

Despite being outplayed and outgunned, the Bees’ again showed plenty of fight, character and professionalism, which drew praise from their opponents’ camp.

Mousehole manager Jake Ash said: “It says a lot about Bridport Football Club that they managed to get this one done today on a horrible day. Great group, great manager.

They managed to put out a decent side today that caused us a lot of problems and kept going to the end.”

Bridport avenged their December defeat at the hands of local rivals Puddletown, with two moments of magic producing the decisive tries in this hard-fought encounter at the Brewery Ground.

In a match hampered by a strong wind, and punctuated with a seemingly endless string of penalties, the Blues’ backs combined superbly to enable Corben Newman and Jordan Neil to cross over for the crucial scores.

Defences had been firmly on top for the opening 20 minutes, although Puddletown, with the wind at their backs, enjoyed the greater territorial advantage, and the visitors may have opened the scoring following a driving

Instead it was the Blues who scored first when Corben Newman rounded off a superb move from the Bridport backline, which began deep in their own territory. A breath-taking convoy of Jaguar cars will be winding its way from Weymouth through the villages and towns of West Dorset on Sunday, April 24 to raise money for Childline.

The event is being hosted by members of the Dorset Region of Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club as part of Drive-it Day, a national event organised by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, but you don’t need to be a member to join the procession, all you need is a Jaguar, old or new!

Peter York, event organiser for the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, said: “We are expecting a wide spectrum of Jaguars ranging from some of the early models right up to the modern-day cars. The cars will be leaving Weymouth Promenade at about 11.30am for a drive that will take in some of West Dorset’s lovely villages culminating in a pub lunch in Charminster.

“All owners of Jaguar cars

are welcome to join the club members on what should be a very enjoyable day, but prebooking is essential.”

Weymouth Council has given permission for the day to start with an eyecatching collection of cars to be displayed on Weymouth Esplanade, near the clock tower, between 10.30am and 11.30am.

National Drive It Day was created by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs in 2005.

Historic vehicle enthusiasts and motor vehicle fans have the chance to celebrate the One Thousand Mile Trial, which was organised in 1900 to prove the viability of the new invention - the motor vehicle.

The event also raises awareness and support for the historic vehicle movement and keeping transport heritage on UK roads while raising money for good causes.

A spokesperson from the FBHVC said: “FBHVC will continue to support the NSPCC’s Childline to raise money as an integrated part

of Drive it Day in order to use our movement to contribute to a section of society that has needed huge help and support during the pandemic – vulnerable children.

When my horse-mad daughter bought her first four-year-old horse several years ago, it was love at first sight.

Things went well at first, Florence spent hours building their bond, quietly building on his confidence, instilling trust and gently pushing him forward.

But then Mars began to buck whenever she rode.

Not little bucks, but huge shape-shifting bucks, which could unseat the most seasoned rider.

Florence has been surrounded by horses since she was two years old.

She has ridden since she was four. She rang the vet.

She rang the saddler.

She rang the dentist. She rang the nutritionist.

She turned him out for longer. She was stricter with his routine.

Mars carried on bucking.

Mars threw everyone off.

Every single day.

Florence rang the vet, again and swallowing the costs, they agreed that Mars was to have a scan.

The scan revealed a slight nerve problem in his back, which would respond well with three weekly laser treatments over a three-tosix-month period.

Fast forward a few years and Mars no longer has nerve issues, however, he is a delicate flower, and as such Flo wanted regular physiotherapy sessions for her beloved.

She was given the number

Shannon arrived, her special magic toolkit in hand, and put Mars (who

frankly is a tricky beast) at ease without needing sedation. Flo felt reassured and Shannon worked on the beautiful Criollo cross.

Shannon said: “I really enjoy becoming involved in the work-up process, helping uncover problems or providing routine maintenance.

“Some are having post-

operative rehabilitation for various conditions such spinal or ligament injuries as well as fracture repair.

“Other patients may be suffering from sprains, muscle strains or arthritis.

Electrotherapy may sound scary, but surprisingly Mars loved it and eventually relaxed into the treatment without trying to kick out or, ahem, bite.

rewarding, its mentally and physically challenging.

“Some patients co-operate while others won’t. If my patient won’t do an exercise I want them to do, I have to think fast and work out another way to achieve the action I need.

My days vary enormously and are highly fulfilling. I

have the return patients that are coming for maintenance and then also the challenging cases where no one is entirely sure what the problem is.

Health A therapy used by patients and therapists in West Dorset can help with a huge range of human conditions – and is even used on horses and dogs.

Deep Oscillation is a medical device used by therapists and patients for many conditions, including Achilles problems, arthritis, dead legs, plantar fasciitis, strains, sprains and breast-feeding problems, through to chronic back and shoulder problems.

One of the first therapists to use it in the UK was Christine Talbot from Wareham, who has changed the lives of the lymphoedema patients with manual lymphatic drainage combined with Deep Oscillation.

The machine uses a gentle, electrostatic intermittent pulse where the layers of tissue are attracted and released up to 250 times a second, reaching up to 8cm beneath the skin to drain excess fluid. Therapists apply

Patients love the fact they can take the unit as hand luggage and manage any post flight swelling with their personal unit.

It does not electrically stimulate the tissue like Tens, or heat the tissue like ultrasound and so it can be used immediately post op and injury. it can also be used over implanted pins/plates, prosthesis and breast implants.

Deep Oscillation, a patented therapy, was brought to the UK from Germany by sports and holistic massage therapist Julie Soroczyn of Physiopod UK. She said: “I’ve treated a variety of conditions with it and it is just amazing.”

Julie teamed up with her sister Mary Fickling to establish PhysioPod UK Limited, which distributes the machine exclusively in the UK and Ireland.

One of the main conditions it is used for is lymphoedema; a chronic condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues, this can be primary or secondary. Primary is caused by a developmental

abnormality of the lymphatic system. Secondary can develop after cancer treatment which involves lymph node removal/ radiotherapy. When the lymphatic system isn’t doing its job of fighting infection and draining lymph fluid this can cause swelling in the area affected with increased risk of cellulitis developing.

Lymphoedema is thought to affect more than 200,000 people in the UK, and affects around 20 per cent of people who have undergone breast cancer treatment.

Other causes of lymphoedema include obesity, immobility, venous disease, inflammation, trauma, infection, insect bites and cellulitis.

Julie’s mother-in-law had suffered terribly with lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment and Julie wanted to ensure cancer patients could access the therapy easily which is why they focussed their business on getting it into NHS hospitals. In 2019, Christine teamed up with Dorset Cancer Care Foundation to host a special patient gathering in honour of Mary and Julie to celebrate Deep Oscillation being in the UK and

Ireland with Silver Island TV recording seven interviews with local patients who had successfully received treatment.

Another very similar sounding condition – lipoedema – can also be treated.

Unlike lymphoedema, which is fluid-filled swelling, lipoedema is an abnormal fat swelling, where the hips, buttocks, legs and sometimes upper arms, are out of proportion with the rest of the body. Unlike normal weight gain caused by overeating or lack of exercise, lipoedema fat can can be painful or feel heavy and hurt when banged or scraped, even gently. It also can bruise easily.

Deep Oscillation reduces pain, oedema (if present) and inflammation.

Deep Oscillation is currently used in top level sport and in the NHS lymphoedema services as well as by private therapists. Physiotherapists, sports, complementary and equine and canine therapists have also added this gentle, effective, therapy to their skills.

Walking West Dorset

FROME VALLEY This is a short walk of about four miles. You won’t need wellies as it doesn’t go close to the Frome but there’s one rather muddy spot near Chantmarle.

The walk links up with the previous one but this time were going ‘upstream’.

Park at the roadside at Sandhills, the hamlet to the north of Cattistock.

There used to be a pub there, The Three Horse Shoes.

Walk down past the old pub and over the railway bridge, then turn right up Holway Lane. After about half a mile of walking uphill, where the road

swings to the left, you carry straight on through a gate at Holway Farm.

The path, which is quite well signed, takes you round the rear of the farm buildings then heads north across three fields with wide views.

You will now be close to North Holway Farm where the path veers to the right, then left after a short

distance, taking you uphill across another field. This part of the route isn’t as well signed and you might wish you had a map and compass with you!

When you reach a hedge line you turn right and follow a track down towards Chantmarle, entering some woodland.

Exiting the woodland you enter what appears to be a

building site. Soon you find a track to your left which has recently been surfaced. It swings round to the left and enters a field. Now you meet the section of the Frome Valley Trail you followed on the previous walk (if you’re doing the walks, not just reading about them!).

Take the unpaved, unclassified, unsigned, County road westward up the hill for half a mile until you meet Holway Lane.

Then turn left and it’s nearly all downhill back to your car.

Cognitive dissonance: Friend or foe?

In psychological terms cognitive dissonance describes the discomfort felt when your beliefs are inconsistent with one another or with your actions.

Personally I’ve learnt to welcome cognitive dissonance because I know that’s what creates change.

And my job is all about change. All about growing, evolving, moving forward and letting go of old stuff that has caused us to get stuck in certain behaviour and beliefs.

Cognitive dissonance is all about conflict and if we use it as a strength it will

propel us forward and show us the way to become more true to our authentic selves and our true values.

However if we try to ignore it, or if we feel powerless to follow that compulsion within us it can cause us to sink into a deep depression. So what can we do about it?

These days there is so much information available to you whatever it is you want to do.

There are YouTube videos on everything, there’s the worldwide web, there’s endless online courses you can take on any subject and of course there’s still books which are more accessible than ever with kindle and audible etc. Then there’s therapy.

If you can’t afford a

therapist there’s so much you can learn to do for yourself. Self-hypnosis, EFT, Havening are all wonderful therapies that you can use on yourself.

Self hypnosis completely changed my life. And if you’re stuck in a situation and can’t see a way forward just find something small that you can do for yourself starting today.

It could be watching a video, getting a book from the library, starting a free course, joining some Facebook groups for like minded people or starting your own group. Just find something for you. Once you start to take action, no matter how small, to bring you closer to living the way you feel you should

be, that ‘trapped’ feeling will ease? You’ll no longer be in conflict with yourself as you’ll know that you’re growing, you are moving forward and you are no longer just staying ‘stuck.’

Spring turnout is approaching and while this is a relief for many, it comes with plenty of considerations.

The spotlight of this feature focuses on biosecurity and disease risks at pasture.

While TB always seems to dominate discussions, there are other infectious disease risks to be aware of around turnout, namely BVD, leptospirosis and, to a lesser extent, neospora. The biosecurity measures outlined in the CHECS accreditation are a highly effective way of reducing the risk of TB and other diseases. The following risk factors and control measures outline the top considerations for grazing: Neighbouring cattle can be a significant risk to your herd, particularly if you do not know their disease status. Avoid shared grazing and ensure you have effective barriers in place, either double fencing or a minimum three-metre gap to prevent nose-to-nose contact. This is vital to reduce disease transmission.

Shared equipment and facilities will also increase the risk of disease spread from herd to herd.

Spring has sprung... time to consider the risks of disease carry TB. Foxes and other canines can be a potential source of neospora infection. The first step to controlling wildlife is to establish the activity on your farm. Restricting cattle access to high-risk areas such as sets and latrines will help to minimise infection from badgers, in addition to restricting wildlife access to feed and water sources.

Feed and water sources at grazing must be carefully managed to reduce disease risk. When feeding at pasture, only feed the amount required each day so there is none left over for wildlife. Ensure feed, water troughs and mineral licks are raised as high as possible (at least 90cm) with sheer sides and no footholds so badger access is limited. Use mains water where possible, fence off

stagnant ponds and shared watercourses. Remember, for unvaccinated herds, shared watercourses can also pose a risk of leptospirosis which can have a severe impact on health and productivity.

Speak to your vet to discuss leptospirosis vaccination if this is not something you are currently undertaking.

Slurry spreading and grazing – TB and MAP (the bacteria that causes Johne’s disease) can both persist for significant periods in slurry.

Slurry should be stored for six months prior to spreading, and after this should not be grazed for a minimum of two months to minimise risk of TB. And remember, to reduce transmission of Johne’s disease, this land should not be grazed by youngstock for at least 12 months.

There are plenty of other turnout considerations such as parasite control and pasture management, your vets can advise on any of the above at this time of year should you need it.

New moves to reduce use of pesticides finds to be Red Tractor’s ‘lack of targets’ to reduce pesticide use and a failure to require its certified farmers to adopt alternative approaches such as growing disease resistant crops and using biopesticides.

Martin Lines, a farmer and chairman of the Nature Friendly Farming Network who co-authored the report, said: “There will always be a balance to strike between pesticide reduction and the quality and quantity of the crop produced, but Red Tractor has an opportunity to provide the right support and guidance in driving an uptake of different methods

Farmers in West Dorset are being urged to reduce their reliance on pesticides.

A new report by the Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN) calls for reduced use of pesticides in the production of food carrying the Red Tractor certification.

The Sub Standard report, backed by Pesticide Action Network UK and the RSPB, claims Red Tractor urgently needs to ‘review and strengthen its promotion of non-chemical pesticide alternatives’.

The report highlights what it

You herd it here first...

with Rachel Hayball Don’t get distracted and end up floored by flying cows

Rachel Hayball is a married mum of six from Beaminster.

She is a herdsperson and has a small flock of sheep and sells lamb.

It was a beautiful day and I was in a field feeding a group of heifers and beef cows. I had poured the feed out in lines across the grass and the cows were all busy eating, so I took the opportunity to take a few photos of the view and one of the cows.

Then bang, I was suddenly

run into by a cow and was sent flying sideways. I remember hitting the ground with force hurting my neck and hitting my head. I briefly laid on the floor in a fair bit of pain before telling myself that I really needed to get up to avoid being trampled.

I did get up and got back on the quad bike and back to the farm and then to A&E, where they were quite rightly horrified that I had hadn’t called an ambulance as I could have done some serious damage. Thankfully I was lucky. I was fine, just bruised with a bit of whiplash. But it could have been so much worse.

I had got distracted. I had failed to notice until it was too late that the cows had finished eating and that some of the younger girls had got excited and started chasing round after each other. I

could have easily prevented that accident from occurring had I just been a little less distracted.

The HSE states that the rate of deaths in agriculture is now 20 times higher than the average across all industries.

We have the poorest safety record of any industry in the UK. Everyone who works in farming knows of someone who has been seriously injured when working in farming.

Now when you take into account that we are working with large animals, machinery and often working long hours it’s not surprising.

People make mistakes, they also cut corners at times to try and get the job done quicker as there is always something else that needs doing. However, it’s not something that we should just accept.

Farmers branch out with more trees Hundreds of NFU members across the south west have received some 90,000 trees as part of the #MoreTrees4Farms project.

The trees were provided by The Woodland Trust to tackle the impact of ash die-back, as well as locking up more carbon on farms, which will help deliver the NFU’s ambition for agriculture to be net zero for greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The tree packs included varieties suited to hedgerows, copses, wet

woodlands or encouraging wildlife.

NFU South West regional director Melanie Squires said: “As custodians of the South West’s fabulous landscapes which provide so much, not just in terms of providing the food we eat but as the foundation of our vital tourism industry, farmers know how important it is to keep it looking at its best, which includes having plenty of healthy trees.”

Rob Daulby, assistant outreach officer for the Woodland Trust, said the

trees would provide a boost for the environment and for farmers.

“Trees give shade and shelter for livestock, provide habitat for birds and other insects and improve water quality and soil health.

“More trees mean more connectivity of woods and trees across the landscape providing vital wildlife corridors.

“What’s more we have a carbon offer that could enable farmers to earn an income from planting trees.”

We all need to slow down and avoid cutting those corners. Use safety gear, wear that helmet, maintain equipment and make life a bit safer for everyone. Yes, there will sadly always be incidents with animals and accidents with machinery, however by making better decisions we can reduce the number of injuries and fatalities.

We need to remember that we have husbands, wives, partners, children, parents, siblings and friends who care about us and want us to be safe. We have a responsibility to look after ourselves not just for our sake, but for theirs. None of them want to get a knock on the door from the police, or a call from a hospital saying that the worst has happened.

Mud-phobic Tria Stebbing lives on the outskirts of Sherborne with her farmer partner and two dogs in a converted stable. She keeps sheep, both stock sheep and pedigree rare breed sheep. She is working on her first book, in between working in a village school to pay the vet’s bills.

A sunny and warm few days has meant that the hedge laying can be finished off before the end of March deadline.

It has made the field feel very exposed down one side but has also allowed sun to come in for the first time in years.

Why lay the hedge?

Hedgerows are like a microclimate for birds, insects and small mammals but have a tendency to get thin on the bottom and thick towards the top, a lollipop effect. Traditionally laying the hedge down at an angle, partially cutting through the stems near ground level and arching them without

and it was a race to get it done before the invertebrates spawned. The people that established the pond innocently planted pond plants that have completely taken over the water, choking anything that tries to grow.

The worst offender being Parrots feather (myriophyllum aquaticum), it was first bought to the UK from South America in the 1960s.

We rake it out and stand it on the edge for a few days and then make a pile and cover it ready to burn, it is spread just by walking it on your boots to other parts of the pond, so it has to be done carefully.

It is an easy task compared to getting on top of the bulrushes, a sedge that colonises itself in the pond, grasping a clump and cutting them below the water before disposing of the growth again is time consuming but well worth the hard work. With the grass in the paddock now starting to shoot it is time to turn our thoughts to weed management and thistle spotting.

The hard graft does not last for long, and is far out weighed by the enjoyment that the field gives the whole family in the summer months…lambing is only four weeks away!

We need more buck for our bangers, warns chairman National Pig Association chairman Rob Mutimer says farmers are facing ‘beyond desperate’ times, with wheat around £300 a tonne.

Last year, Dorset pig farmer Robert Lasseter urged the supermarkets to support producers struggling with low prices and rising costs.

In a year of heavy financial

losses, things are getting worse for pig farmers after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has pushed up the price of wheat.

Many pig farms in the southwest are ‘on the brink of total collapse’ according to the NPA, which is calling on retailers to pay more for pork after an unprecedented spike in feed costs. The NPA is

asking retailers to pay enough to at least cover pig farmers’ costs of production.

Mr Mutimer said: “Nobody can survive with wheat at £300/tonne. The situation is now beyond desperate and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. We need a large and immediate price increase from retailers. Our current

pricing mechanism has failed to keep up with unprecedented events around the world.

“We are staring down the barrel of a total collapse of the British pig industry, which is not only a tragedy for the producers, themselves, but will leave UK consumers short of one of their favourite and most versatile meats.”

Dorset top for holiday home earnings Dorset is the highest earning region of the UK for holiday home owners, a new report has found.

The average four-bedroom holiday home owner in Dorset made £35,864 in 2021.

Meanwhile, similar properties available in the Cotswolds and the Peak District fetched just over £35,000 and almost £34,000 respectively.

According to Sykes Cottages’ report, the average annual income generated by a holiday home in 2021 was almost £28,000 – a 33 per cent increase on 2019.

The report added that this was partly due to a 35 per cent rise in occupancy rates, with the covid lockdown cited as a major reason for the increase

in the popularity of ‘staycations’ in 2021.

Bev Dumbleton, chief operating officer at Sykes Holiday Cottages, said: “2021 was certainly the year of the staycation, as we saw the strong demand for UK-based accommodation culminate in record occupancy rates and a significant boost in average yearly income.

“With the interest in holidays closer to home likely to remain a fixture for years to come, those considering investing in a holiday home in 2022 could see great success – particularly if they choose a location which has proven fruitful for those already in the market this year.”

After Dorset took the top spot

for average holiday home rental incomes of £35,864 in 2021, The Cotswolds came in second with an average income of £35,027 for an average four-bedroom property.

In third place was the Peak District, with an average income of £33,833, and in fourth place was Devon, with an average income of £33,071.

The fifth position was taken

by Somerset, with an average annual income of £32,708.
