Will’s wonderful walk Family, friends and strangers have applauded seven-year-old Will Hunns, pictured, from Godmanstone, who smashed his 40-mile running target to raise money for Shelter.

As reported in our first edition of The West Dorset Magazine, Will decided to take up the challenge of running 40 miles in February after seeing the stark reality of homelessness on a trip to London.

Mum Jo Hunns said: “Will finished his run on Saturday, February 26, after running 40.48 miles. He was met with a warm reception from his family and the Cerne Abbas Brewery patrons where Will is very well loved for his enthusiasm for life and they were excited to welcome him over the finish line. “The support he has received from his family, his friends and

strangers has been overwhelming. Cerne Abbas Brewery had a collection bucket on the bar and the patrons have been generously donating. ” Since the start of the month, there has been no stopping Will on his mission, who clocked up three miles every other day and has so far raised more than £430. Rehearsals in the shed Rehearsals for The Magdalen Whitewash are taking place in The Shed in Bridport ahead of the performance planned for late July at The Hayloft at the Bull Hotel. Playwright Valerie Goodwin, the former Beaminster School’s head of drama, wrote the play in 2002 and since then, it has been performed all over the world, securing awards in Dallas and Manchester.

Neighbourhood plans backed

Charmouth residents and people in Yetminster and Ryme Intrinseca have voted overwhelmingly in favour of two local neighbourhood plans.

Responding to a Dorset County Council poll, more than 90 per cent of Charmouth residents voted in favour of the authority’s Neighbourhood Plan.

And respondents to a poll on Yetminster and Ryme Instrinseca’s Neighbourhood Plan were more than 96 per cent in favour of it, which could pave the way for 115 new homes, business opportunities and community facilities.

The minimum target for new homes in Yetminster is 115 between 2017 and 2036. Four small sites have

been identified, to accommodate up to 14 dwellings.

The plan proposes adding more qualifications from the Dorset Housing Allocations Policy to define a local connection which would entitle people to live in any new homes and also supports a need for new community and leisure facilities.

The Charmouth Neighbourhood Plan supports the development of ‘small scale housing’ identifying a particular need for one-to-threebedroom homes and pedestrian routes.

The plan also identifies the need to support the ‘expansion and creation’ of small businesses in the area but notes that opportunities are limited’.

A spokesman for the

county council said: “These neighbourhood plans will now be taken to Dorset Council Cabinet, where councillors will decide whether to formally adopt them.

“If formally adopted, the neighbourhood plans will be used to inform decisions on planning applications in the area.”

Cllr David Walsh, briefholder for planning, said: “I am pleased that the community has come together to influence future development in its area.

“It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to bring a neighbourhood plan forward and have it supported at a referendum.

“I look forward to presenting this plan to members and am confident of a positive outcome.”

Frustrated villagers say their GP surgery has lost its way since joining forces with surgeries in Bridport and Beaminster.

Patients registered with the Ammonite Health Partnership, who use the former Tollerford Practice in Maiden Newton, say they have been kept waiting up to an hour outside in the cold to pick up prescriptions, and sometimes the medicines aren’t even ready when they reach the front of the queue.

They say the eConsult process is clunky and longwinded, and that it’s so difficult to actually see a doctor they’ve been forced instead to go to A&E or minor injuries units.

Diana Padfield is trying to organise a meeting with Ammonite, along with a parish councillor from each of the six parishes that feed the surgery. She posted on Facebook, asking for people to contact her with their concerns.

She said: “I need to collate people’s concerns about the surgery before the meeting…

“I hope we can use the meeting to help Ammonite solve some of our concerns.”

People were quick to respond, with one person saying: “Four attempts of trying to get my last prescription. I had to stand each time for around 30-45

Residents’ woe at GP surgery after health shake-up mins and have ME and can’t do it. I had to leave those four times as it got too much plus had two kids in the car. A friend had to collect my meds for me and queued up. One med was also urgent and should have been ready the week before but hadn’t been done so he then had to wait another 20 mins.

“Nightmare to get prescriptions, nightmare to get appointments or get through to even speak to someone.”

Another person posted: “Before becoming part of Ammonite we enjoyed a dedicated and committed group of doctors who provided a patient-centred and reliable service to this community.

“Sadly since becoming part

of a group practice our great doctors have disappeared and continuity of service to the community has gone.”

Another said: “Needs to go back to the original doctor’s surgery, to be able to speak to people at Maiden Newton not Tunnel Road down Beaminster or Bridport, have doctors at the surgery etc. It’s a total nightmare.”

Patients were quick to point out they do not blame staff at the surgery, who have been ‘doing their best’ since the merger.

One said: “The reception staff have been excellent despite their challenges. I would like to know how they intend dealing with the new evening and Saturday working directive.”

One person said they had

been unable to get a home visit for a 90-year-old in the village, while others said they had to help their elderly relatives and neighbours with the eConsult forms and worried about those who did not have help available.

One said: “My family have suffered awful stress caused by this surgery in the last few months. That said I would absolutely commend and sing the praises of the staff who are turning up every day as they must be getting verbally abused day in and day out due to the poor management of the place. I went this week, there was the lady on reception, doing who knows how many jobs, a dispenser, an admin and a nurse. NOT ONE DOCTOR! “I have to admit even I lost my temper and even though I apologised I still felt bad as those who are there, are trying their best and this should not be forgotten.”

Workers said they were considering changing surgery as they couldn’t get hold of anyone outside working hours.

Ammonite: We are under pressure and there’s no quick fix Senior GP Partner Dr Ian Platt said: “We absolutely recognise some people are frustrated and would like to apologise for any inconvenience they may have had.

“The problems we face are not restricted to Dorset and there is no quick fix.

“All our staff are working incredibly hard under difficult circumstances in order that we are able to continue to offer

primary care through our local partnerships and we thank people for their patience and understanding.

“We welcome the opportunity to meet with local parish council representatives at the earliest opportunity and are happy to explain in greater detail the challenges we face as demand continues to increase whilst at the same time, we deliver

business as usual following a huge volume of work as part of the national covid-19 vaccination programme.

“We would also like to ask people to help us by being considerate to staff, and when they need help to make use of other services that could be more effective for their needs and alleviate the pressure we are experiencing.”

Proof you’re never tutu old to enjoy

A bevy of older ladies are chatting excitedly when I arrive at Bradpole Village Hall on a Wednesday afternoon.

They are looking forward to their weekly ballet class – an incredible 11 of them, with the three oldest members all in their early eighties.

“Some of us have metalwork in our hips,” smiles Sharon ‘Shazza’ Morgan, 69, who returned to ballet aged 65 after a 57-year break. These are the Silver Swans – the saviours of Fee Jeanes’ ballet school, which looked for some agonising months to be on the wane during the pandemic, despite years of success.

Fee, 54, is a Bridport born and bred nurse who spent years working at Bridport Community Hospital before taking a new job at Dorchester’s Joseph Weld Hospice a couple of years ago.

Alongside her demanding job on the inpatient unit there she runs dance classes well into the evening, with all ages from one to 82 enjoying her brand of fun, enthusiastic teaching.

This isn’t the strict ballet tuition some of us might remember, where we had to pull our limbs into uncomfortable shapes to gain our certificates.

“Remember to hold on to that £50 note!” chuckles Fee, reminding her ladies how to extend their back

and pull in their bottoms – more to save their backs from pinging out during a plié than to win trophies.

I’ll leave it to your imagination where these imaginary £50 notes are to be held – suffice to say the class ripples with mirth each time they are

reminded to hold on tight to them.

For one of the oldest ladies there, Valerie Jones, 83, aka ‘Mama Elf’, Fee’s weekly sessions have saved her balance, her fitness and her long-term health.

Bailey, 67, from Bradpole, who came along with pal Jackie Dunn, 66.

Valerie has been coming here since the Silver Swans first started last September, having been told to get more exercise.

“I’m a lazy crow,” she said.

“I was always losing my balance before. Now I don’t feel so dizzy. I feel much better after a class.”

She added: “I’ve never done ballet before. I was born before the war and we didn’t have things like ballet classes. I didn’t go to school till I was seven.”

The pupils are full of praise for Fee, who started dancing when she was three at Bernard Gale’s School of Dancing in Bridport. Her sister Nikki runs Bridport Youth Dance – the love of dancing runs deep in their family.

She later helped Bernard run his classes and then started her own school, where pupil numbers peaked at 110 before crashing to 38 during the pandemic.

Undeterred, Fee launched classes on Zoom, and she still runs those for some pupils she acquired during that time but who live miles away – most local pupils now attend in person.

The sudden drop-off in numbers made Fee panic.

Costs of hiring the hall, insurance and other expenditure made her fear it could be the end for her school. But last autumn she had a brainwave and launched Silver Swans – a class predominantly for older people, but where

anyone can join in whatever their age. The idea was an instant hit, with 30 enquiries overnight. She now runs two classes for mainly older people, as well as her

classes for youngsters and younger adults.

She said: “Silver Swans has saved my school, it’s as simple as that. I was so worried when the numbers dropped.

“We had had such fun the last few years, even staging Cinderella, which cost £8,000 to put on. But suddenly it looked like the school was in trouble. I was doing hours and hours

of Zoom classes, but the classes in the hall were struggling till I started Silver Swans.

“I love this class. We do laugh a lot.”

Mandy Beer, 55, went to school with Fee and now drives from Somerset to enjoy the classes.

She said: “I have hypermobility and this gives me strength, which helps a lot.

“Fee teaches with a great deal of fun and joy. She has a great affinity for dance and it just rubs off on everybody. It’s great for your mental health.”

Susannah Hills, 69, from Beaminster said: “It’s very accepting here. I wrote on Facebook that I’d like to take up dancing but I didn’t want anyone looking at my bum, and people told me to come here.”

Other ladies chime in: “I always go away much happier…” “It’s massive for your mental health…”

“It helps with incontinence and short term memory…”

One thing’s for sure, they have a great time and you can clearly see how much the classes help them with mobility, balance and strength. n The school is trying to raise money to buy another couple of portable barres, which cost £350 each, and a few other expenses.

We stand together: Villagers show

A woman from Maiden Newton who works for a Ukrainian health charity staged a moving gesture of support for her colleagues caught up in the war – with a crowd of people gathering at the village war memorial.

Rebekah Webb has been in regular contact with colleagues as Putin’s armies move through their country and has been trying to get the word out about what they need.

One of her colleagues, Valentyna, remains in Ukraine with her 12-yearold son.

Rebekah said: “My colleagues are facing unbearably awful decisions about whether to stay and fight or to leave the country while they still can.

“In some cases, they have taken their children to the west of the country to be cared for by friends and relatives. It would be like me taking my son to Scotland and not knowing if I would ever see him again.

“They are still in shock over what has happened.”

Rebekah and friends Kim Sibley, Sarah Vintner, Claire Robinson and Jen Muggleton made blue and yellow hearts and flowers and invited villagers along to show their support and call for peace. They only expected a handful of people to turn out and were delighted when scores of people turned up,

many waving blue and yellow hearts and flowers they had made.

Kim said: “Speaking to Bekkie about the plight of her friends, put real places

and names in my mind.

“I wished I was nearer a bigger town or city to join in some of the acts of solidarity that were taking place.

“I felt that having something in the village would give people an opportunity to express their support for Ukraine and also for each other.

“The anxiety which people experience reading about the conflict and the sense of collective pain is another terrible consequence of this war.”

Kim’s daughter Isla, 12, said: “I wanted to support people of my own age going through something I can’t even imagine.”

People gathered around the war memorial to send a direct message to personal friends and colleagues as they watch their homes and former lives destroyed.

Support for Ukraine Award-winning novelist Dr Celia Brayfield says she is shocked over the ‘level of aggression’ being shown

by Russia against Ukraine.

The West Dorset based author of Pearls and Rebel Writers: The Accidental Feminists also said she feels that many people feel frustrated that they are unable to help.

Her comments come after she shared a photo online of a cardboard sign reading ‘twinned with Ukraine’ propped up by the Thornford village sign.

Dr Brayfield, senior lecturer in creative writing for Bath Spa University, said: “I saw the sign when I was out shopping, I just jumped out of the car and took the picture. I posted it online and it had 200 likes overnight. Everybody was leaving comments like ‘kudos for doing this’ and ‘thank you’. The sign’s still out there and, so far, no one knows who put it out.”

Dr Brayfield added: “I feel, along with the rest of the world, that we all share a sense of solidarity with Ukraine, and a sense of frustration – that it seems so little can be done by us to help. Someone in the

“I think everyone is appalled by Russia’s aggression. There is a family of Syrian refugees living in the village. I think that makes people around here particularly aware that we are lucky to live in this part of the world.

“I’m really shocked at the level of aggression that can take place in the 21st century.”

Dr Brayfield, who is

originally from London, is the award-winning writer of Pearls and Rebel Writers: The Accidental Feminists as well as a former journalist for the Evening Standard and The Times.

She moved to Dorset in 2016 after forming a love for the county during her childhood.

“My parents had a holiday home at Charmouth and I’ve always loved the area,” said Dr Brayfield.

“I spent many happy childhood days on holiday here at Charmouth Beach.

“When I realised a few

years ago that I could live in Yetminster, and easily get out into Wessex and on up to Bath, or over to Charmouth Beach at the weekend, it seemed like a dream to me, so I moved here.”

In her spare time, Dr Brayfield is also the secretary of her local church’s parochial church council and events officer for her local garden society.

“That’s the trouble with village life,” Dr Brayfield added, “people are always so successful at letting you know what needs doing!”

Town hall to be illuminated in gesture of support Bridport Mayor Ian Bark has spoken of his ‘outrage’ over the Ukraine conflict.

He said the town hall will fly the Ukrainian flag in a show of solidarity with the war-torn nation.

As a further show of support, the town hall will also be illuminated with the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

Cllr Bark said: “To see a sovereign democratic European country being subjected to a full-blown military invasion is something I am sure like you I had hoped I would never see happen again.

He added: “Bridport is proud to be the first Rights Respecting town in this country and as such we are

particularly appalled by the removal of basic human rights by military force. To let the world know the people of Bridport are looking on in horror at what Russia is doing, and to send a message of support to the people of Ukraine, the town hall clock will be lit in the blue and yellow of

the Ukrainian flag, and the Ukrainian flag will be flown.” n A donation point has been set up at Waves hair studio at Freshwater Holiday Park, Burton Bradstock. The business is taking blankets, toiletries, clothes, baby products and sanitary towels to go to people in the Ukraine.

Residents showing solidarity with people of Ukraine West Dorset residents are showing solidarity with the people of Ukraine by donating clothes and blankets.

Dorchester town councillor Janet Hewitt, who organised the collection, said: “The community of Dorchester and the surrounding district have been truly amazing.

has been overwhelming.

“Pupils from The Prince of Wales School are helping to label all the

boxes so these donations can get to those poor displaced people who really are in great need.”

County to fly yellow and blue flag County Hall in Dorchester will fly the Ukrainian flag and will be lit in blue and yellow to show solidarity with the war-ravaged country.

Dorset Council leader Spencer Flower said the move follows the ‘incredible generosity’ already being shown by county residents.

He also said the council stands ready to work with the government to support those fleeing Ukraine.

Cllr Flower said: “We are all deeply saddened by the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine.

“Our thoughts are with

those affected by this conflict. We recognise that there will be people within our own community affected by this situation.

“We are working closely with voluntary and community groups to provide support.

“I particularly want to thank Dorset Race Equality Council (DREC) for their work supporting local communities who are facing prejudices, and who are also helping to organise local donations.

“Many of us want to know how we can help, and it is wonderful to see the incredible generosity of

Dorset residents in making donations.

“The advice from local and national charities is that the best way to help is to make a cash donation to an organisation such as the British Red Cross or Save the Children who are responding to the humanitarian crisis.

“These organisations are already working on the ground and can direct support in the quickest and most appropriate ways.

“As shown with the recent conflicts in Syria and Afghanistan, councils across the country have a proud history of welcoming

refugees. We stand ready to work with the government to support any scheme helping those fleeing the conflict.

“To show our solidarity with the people of Ukraine we will shortly be flying the Ukraine flag from County Hall and also lighting up County Hall in yellow and blue. The scheme, if approved

by Dorset Council, will form part of the Government’s New Hospitals Programme.

The trust has additional plans to build a new twostorey main entrance, hospital support centre and key worker housing, forming part of the trust’s Your Future Hospital programme, which sets out plans for the DCH site over the next five years.

Interim Chief Executive at Dorset County Hospital Nick Johnson said: “It’s an exciting time for us at Dorset County Hospital and we’re delighted to have been included in the Government’s New Hospital Programme.

“We hope that these plans will make a huge difference to our patients, staff and visitors.

“It would help increase our capacity to meet demand and give patients the care and support they need, as well as provide staff with a better place to work,

enabling them to continue to provide outstanding care to those who need it.”

DCH have been inviting patients and communities to view and comment on the proposals, found at dchft.nhs.uk/your-futurehospital, which form part of the trust’s outline planning application.

As part of its development plans, DCH plans to use local tradespeople and reduce carbon emissions through sustainable design.

DCH is being supported by Prime, a specialist health and care property company, working in partnership with the trust to identify and plan improvements for the future. They have successfully teamed up on the new 650-space multistorey car park, set into the hill on a corner site at the bottom of Williams Avenue and Damers Road.

The car park is due to open this summer and will improve parking for patients, staff and visitors, as well as free up the space needed to develop the rest of the hospital site.

MP comes clean on village pillar box

MP Chris Loder issued a clean-up pledge having read the first edition of The West Dorset Magazine.

But the farmer’s son wasn’t talking the milking sheds of politics, more the sorry state of Britain’s oldest working pillar box in his old stomping ground of Holwell, near Sherborne.

The West Dorset MP went to school in the village primary school and was very close to his grandmother who lived in Holwell.

“I passed that pillar box every day on the way to school,” he recalls.

So when Chris read about the downbeat state of the box, he was moved to take up a mop and set to on the 169-year-old village icon.

The gilt and gold paint may have faded but a brisk brush-up and polish quickly brought through the vibrant red paint.

And a trim of a rampant clematis made it stand out on the roadside at Barnes Cross Cottage.

Chris has a long connection with Holwell: he was a choirboy and played the organ in the parish church – he was

also a bellringer and played his first quarterpeal in the church.

While a district councillor, he twice persuaded Royal Mail to rub down and repaint the octagonal pillar box, which was installed back in 1853 – and which attracts plenty of box spotters.

“We are well used to photographers outside our window, and callers to the door asking for information,” said Pat

Bush, who has lived in the cottage with husband Pete for 50 years.

The box will also benefit soon from a community initiative to clean up the ground around the box and other village features, including fingerposts and a working telephone box.

“The box is very much a focal point of the village and we are very proud of it” said Sally-Anne Holt, chair of the parish council.

“People still use it and it attracts a lot of visitors.”

Only schools and horses: How equine

“It’s about listening to the horses,” says Vendela Eversden of her daughter Rebecca Maslen’s new enterprise, helping anxious young people learn coping strategies using equine assisted learning (EAL).

Mum of three Rebecca has loved horses from an early age, having been inspired by her mum’s love for the creatures.

Various work in schools, and in another role helping parents of SEND children get the help they need and as a parent herself gave her an urge to use all of her experiences in life to make a difference to autistic young people struggling to find coping strategies.

She also works with young people with anxiety and related conditions.

During lockdown she applied for planning permission to use her land and stables at Notton, just outside Maiden Newton, for therapeutic sessions.

Sessions will be open to physically disabled people too, once the plans are executed, with a new track laid down for the horses, a kitchen and a disabled toilet.

Rebecca and her mum have eight horses there.

Some are much loved family pets, such as Cali,

an 11-year-old horse that technically belongs to one of her daughters but is Rebecca’s own favourite.

Three are on loan, being assessed for their suitability for EAL. Equine assisted learning is based on ‘natural horsemanship’, which is practised by many people, albeit in differing ways but essentially involves reading a horse’s body language to understand what they are ‘saying’.

Through that observation,

interaction and deep concentration a sense of calm is instilled in both learner and horse.

Learning takes place without pupils even being aware of it.

There’s very little talking, and no judging. It’s space to breathe for many of the young people, who find busy, noisy modern life and education frazzling.

“Our horses can say no,” says Vendela. “They are willing partners when they

Rebecca said: “We can get young people in here who are very high energy, very stressed and some of our horses sense that – horses are wary of high energy.

“They don’t get frightened by it, but they will refuse to take part.

“We use that experience to work on managing our emotions and energy so they can work safely with the horses. It’s a gentle, person-centred, learner-led

approach.

“What we do is undertake a range of activities which give learners the space and time to communicate. It’s not about getting them back into mainstream learning. It’s more about giving them techniques and strategies they can use to learn.”

Young people attending Notton Equine Assisted Learning (CIC) are currently offered many different activities, such as

grooming and equine aromatherapy (one of the herd is particularly partial to peppermint).

They get to work with the horses, feed them, take them for a walk, or… just sit with them, perhaps observing their behaviour.

“We have lesson plans,” says Rebecca.

“But they aren’t set in stone.

“We do adapt as the lesson goes on and find what works for each individual

young person.

“It’s an amazing therapeutic approach.”

Rebecca and Vendela have kept their horses in Notton for 26 years. But the pandemic made Rebecca re-evaluate what she wanted to do in her work life, and she set about starting a qualification in EAL. She is now affiliated to EAQ, and Notton is an approved centre, meaning she has specialist insurance, DBS checked staff, safeguarding and first aid qualifications. She is part of a network of EAQ centres, where they share their knowledge and experience.

She has been holding sessions to populate her course portfolio and is now inviting people with young people who could benefit from the sessions to contact her.

Free taster sessions are on offer, where you can look around and decide if it’s right for you.

Rebecca wants to mainly do one-to-one sessions because she finds more progress can be made that way. “It’s about communication techniques,” she said.

“One on one gives you the chance to really focus on the language you use.”

“The learning just kind of happens naturally,” says Rebecca.

Maria added: “Volunteers deliver books and share their love of reading with the people they visit. “They are a friendly face and a regular visitor to those whose mobility and social interactions are limited, and they provide a useful check on the safety and well-being of their readers, too.”

The organisers of the much-loved Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show will be celebrating the new season with the inaugural Spring Countryside Show at the familiar Turnpike Ground on April 23 and 24.

They are hoping the storms and cold weather of winter will abate so they can celebrate the sunnier days of spring with another agricultural delight.

The West Dorset Magazine caught up with event organiser James Cox to find out more about the new show.

He said: “Throughout the pandemic the showground put on a number of Food & Crafts Markets. While we were overwhelmed with the positive response, we knew these could not continue once normal events, similar to that of the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show in 2021, returned. We therefore decided to put more of our efforts into one larger event, to celebrate local producers while bringing to life aspects of rural life and a season that the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show cannot – the Spring Countryside Show was born.”

The woodland area will play host to the Axemen and wood carving along with rural demonstrators including Sticker Maker and Blacksmith, plus a willow workshop.

Social club with a historic past and

It’s such a traditional concept – a social club offering up classic league games of pool, skittles and darts, alongside bingo, entertainment and snacks.

And it’s possibly something very few people under the age of 40 has experienced – I well remember sitting in a swirl of cigarette smoke, chowing down on a pickled egg in a bag of salt and vinegar crisps at Briantspuddle Social Club in the early 80s.

These days though, the smoke is gone at Dorchester’s Trinity Club, an enormous building with a multitude of bright, airy spaces hiding in plain sight in the town centre.

Not only do you not choke on fumes, the committee is even installing ecofriendly air purifiers, which will have the dual effect of killing 99.9 per cent of viruses and creating a cleaner atmosphere.

The building was first used as a club in the 19th century and became The Comrades’ Club in the 1920s. It became the Trinity Club in 1967.

A little over two years ago the volunteer committee, led by chairman Dave Smith, decided to plough £100,000 into a complete revamp, and thank heaven they did, as prices have now risen so much they’d face a heck of a hike if they did it now. And the timing meant they were ready to reveal their

revamp as soon as the pandemic restrictions were lifted.

Dave said: “Back in 2010, ten of us got together to form a committee at a time when the club was losing £1,500 a week. We have since revamped everywhere in the club.

“We are trying to install the best facilities we can afford, so people can come here and enjoy themselves.”

All together, they’ve splashed £250,000 on refurbing every nook and cranny of the place, to bring it in to line with modern tastes and be able to offer a comfortable place for members and guests. An enormous ballroom allows the club to host weddings and parties, and there’s another bar next door. It’s a cavernous space, which is fitted with coloured LED

lighting for the stage area.

All the lights are now LEDS, and the committee is considering other ways to go green, such as installing solar panels.

The new air purifiers don’t even need batteries.

The club has about 800 members, most of whom play in the well-attended league nights for darts, pool and skittles.

for the evening. A core section of the membership enjoy cash prize bingo three times a week, on a Wednesday afternoon and on Saturday and Sunday evenings. There are usually 70 people there on a Sunday night, eyes down.

Skittles is a major deal for the club – it has three alleys and hosts 14 teams.

There are six darts teams, four pool teams and,

should anyone be short of something to do there’s also a snooker table and games machines.

The busiest night is a Friday, when it’s Thrift Club time and there’s a meat raffle, with 14 prizes of joints, breakfast boxes and more supplied by Colin Clark in Grimstone.

Dave said: “We also stage live music events and a Christmas party on the last Saturday before Christmas

Day. The last Christmas party we had, the main act cancelled and we got a Robbie Williams tribute who turned out to be fantastic. He had everyone on their feet dancing all night. So we’ve booked him again this year, when he will be appearing with a Peter Kay tribute act.”

On Wednesday, March 30, the club will host a charity bingo to raise money for Dorchester Foodbank and

Dorchester Food Share.

Dave said: “The club will fund the bingo prizes and there will be a raffle with prizes from local businesses, such as a meal at the Junction and a meal at The Gamekeeper.”

Cancer group’s allotment appeal

Allotment life can be the best therapy for cancer survivors and those facing tough treatment.

And a large allotment in Dorchester could soon provide the perfect space for peace and healing for members of a cancer support group if they can find a few volunteers to turn it into a thriving space to grow vegetables and flowers or to simply connect with nature.

When Butterflies cancer support group founder Melanie Whatley was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, nothing could really prepare her for the ordeal she faced.

What she most needed was the friendship and togetherness from other people who were going through similar journeys.

With the support from her counsellor, in 2015 she set up Butterflies in Dorchester to offer a hand of friendship, nurturing therapies, a place to meet up and talk giving members a little escapism from the challenges of everyday life.

Time has rolled on since those early days, and after

the challenges of lockdowns and the stopstart nature of face-to-face gatherings, Melanie has acquired a large allotment for her group members.

Melanie said: “My idea of a support group is not just sitting in a hall chatting, although that has its place, but it’s more about being with other people who would like the connection and friendship of other people who are going through, or have been

through, the same diagnosis and treatments.

“I am hoping by the allotment and through other activities, we can support the mind, body and soul – even if it’s just for a little while.

“I want people to be able to come and grow vegetables or plant flowers and herbs or take time out and sit with a flask and a sandwich. In our allotment I want to have raised beds and growing areas. We

now have a shed and some tools.

“We have been given slabs for seating areas and pathways and I just want this allotment to be a wonderful space for people with cancer, who have survived cancer or for their families to come and enjoy. Butterflies is really excited to let people know that we now have our very own allotment and we will be using the autumn and winter to get it ready for planting in the spring. Everyone who is a member of Butterflies along with their families and friends are welcome to come and help, no matter how much they can do.

Melanie added: “I am really pleased that you are interested in our story, as the more people who know about us, the more people we might just help and we may get some volunteers too!”

Abbey raising funds to help school and fight hunger Sherborne Abbey will be raising funds to help The Harbour Vale School in Sherborne and Save Afghans from Hunger (SAFH) to help those most in need during Lent.

Last year, during lockdown, Faith in Action raised £6,000 from the parish and hope this year more is collected for the charity.

Baheer for Afghans most impacted by the regime change. It is currently feeding 200 families a day, across seven districts of Kabul.

Students attend Harbour Vale School who are unable to cope with or benefit from mainstream school.

They receive a supportive curriculum, tailored to the individual, with teaching and support provided

in smaller groups and with specific needs in mind.

In awe of galaxies and globular clusters Kevin Quinn is a Dark Sky Custodian for the Cranborne Chase Dark Sky Reserve who lives in Cerne Abbas.

Read his blog at theastroguy. wordpress.com Without doubt, the most exciting time of the year for stargazing has to be early spring.

The evenings are beginning to get warmer, and spending a couple of hours outside at night isn’t so daunting.

Although there aren’t any planets to observe in the evenings this year, and it’s a bit early for the Milky Way, there are some real treats on view over the coming months.

First of all… it’s galaxy season.

There are so many galaxies visible at this time of the year, even with small to medium telescopes (and many visible even with binoculars).

Look to the east after sunset and you can’t fail to spot the constellation of Leo, the head of the lion represented by the ‘sickle’ or reversed question mark asterism.

To the left of the tail of the lion is Coma Berenices, with the naked-eye open star cluster Melotte 111.

Continue left and up a little and you’ll find the small constellation of Canes Venatici.

There are literally dozens of galaxies visible in these three constellations alone.

From the Leo Triplet (M65, M66 and NGC 3628), to the Needle galaxy (NGC 4565), to the Whale, Crowbar and Sunflower galaxies (NGC 4631, 4656 and 5055, respectively), one can

spend hours scanning around the region, observing dozens of individual island universes, each comprised of hundreds of billions of stars, trillions in some cases.

The densest cluster of galaxies, however, lies just below Leo and Coma Berenices.

Here you’ll find the ‘bowl of Virgo,’ home to the Virgo Galactic Supercluster (containing around 2000 galaxies, and lying roughly

60 million light years away). Just point a telescope or binoculars anywhere in this region and you’re guaranteed to spot at least one galaxy, and more likely several. For me, the highlight of this region, if I had to choose one thing, has to be Markarian’s Chain, a dozen or so galaxies strung in an arc spanning nearly two degrees of the sky (to give an idea of scale, the Moon spans about half a degree).

As well as the plethora of galaxies visible in the night sky, another type of deep sky object will be ideally placed for viewing over the coming months: globular clusters.

There are somewhere between 150-250 of these tightly packed ‘balls’ of stars (containing anywhere from 100,000 to 500,000 stars) orbiting the Milky Way. Some, like the Great

Globular Cluster in Hercules (Messier 13) and Messier 3 in Canes Venatici can be spotted with 10x50 binoculars (they’ll appear as small, bright, round fuzzy ‘stars’). Others require the use of higher magnifications to distinguish them from the background stars.

Telescopes with apertures of eight inches and up will resolve stars to the cores, and, on a dark and clear night, the view can be breathtaking.

Whatever equipment you have/use, it’s well worth having a look at some globular clusters, and the coming months are the ideal time to do so.

Galaxies and globular clusters are just some of the mind-boggling and aweinspiring objects, in terms of size and distance from the Earth, that can still be viewed from our small corner of the southwest.

I say ‘can still be viewed’ because, like much of the natural world, the night sky is under tremendous threat, and needs to be protected.

The dim, faint light from these distant objects, some of which has been travelling since the time of the dinosaurs, just can’t compete with overly bright and poorly designed or positioned street, business and domestic lighting …

BEACHCOMBING with JO BELASCO BA Hons History of Architecture and Design

It’s East Beach at Lyme Regis you want to head to for beachcombing.

That is where the landslip happened in 2008 from the Victorian tip above.

And comber beware – it wasn’t the last one.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and this is particularly true of East Beach.

In between squeals of joy as the glass hunter finds a piece of rare red you can also hear the parents reminding the children to mind the broken glass and jagged, rusty iron.

There is in fact a wonderful Facebook group for rust lovers called Rusty Rust. My favourite artist there is Jule Mallett, who dyes materials with rust.

Spotting a rust hunter is easy as they are so often bent double with the weight of their finds and a fossil hunter can be sighted pretty fast from their specific chisel tool used to crack open the rock around a potential fossil.

Crockery shards are another exciting offering at East Beach. However, as with sea glass it is not the smoothest-edged glass as it has not been bashed around in the waves for long. It is not ‘frosted’ with time, either unless someone has wedged it in

a tight spot to weather faster, (which is not unknown). On a sunny day when the sea-glass glints in the water you have to watch out for the beachcomber’s equivalent of beer-goggles.

Glinting in the sunshine and seawater the glass takes on a certain glamour which when you get it home you find has vanished.

Beachcombing can be quite a specialist activity. I am always curious to find

out what others around me are collecting but there is an unspoken beachcombing etiquette not to trespass onto another’s patch.

Having said that out of all the beaches I find East Beach to be the most welcoming of beachcombing sites.

Although we don’t all know exactly what each are collecting we do all share the enthusiasm of the hunt.

Many times we have been

gifted small fossils when we have come up empty.

We usually park at Charmouth Road car park (which has public toilets) and walk down the steep wooden steps.

Another great thing for us is that East Beach is dogfriendly all year round.

This takes you almost right to the stone steps to the beach. You have to time your visit well else you will have a long wait with the waves licking at your ankles.

Down to earth PAGAN VIEWS

My mum’s weekly pilgrimage is to the Baptist church, my father’s was to the great outdoors.

Mine, like many others, lies somewhere between the two and that is where we are going today – St Luke’s Chapel in the woods at Abbotsbury.

If you’re looking for magic this is the place. It’s steeped in mysterious history from being a 13th century Cistercian cell to the landed gentry’s private chapel.

Some say they can still hear the singing of the monks as they chant for the souls of the dead.

There is only the west gable end of the chapel left, as seen in the photo, and the altar and cross were apparently added at a later date.

When visiting a few years ago a friend spotted the stone carvings of a Templar shaped cross on the altar. A little bit of research later and we discover that Templars

A look at St Luke’s who were ‘kicked out’ from the sect were allowed to live out the rest of their lives in Cistercian houses. A lot of research later and my theory is slowed in its tracks by discovering that the Cistercian cross was indeed the same shape as

the Templars. It’s all a very tempting rabbit hole!

Moving on to firmer ground, in the 20th century, the MilneWatsons bought the land and built a mansion in the 1920s.

David and Olga were charmed by the remains of the Ashley Chase chapel

in the woods and breathed new life into it with new additions.

I became a little obsessed with finding out more about Olga Milne-Watson.

She and her husband and daughter are all buried there and the moss cross seems such a physical embodiment of the blending of Christianity and Paganism. To my joy I discovered Olga had written a book of poems and one is entitled Ashley Chase. In the poem she mentions the ‘circle and the standing stone’.

Amazingly in this area there are quite a few candidates for the circle – the nearest I believe is Kingston Russell stone circle sometimes called Gorwell stone circle which makes more sense map-wise. Or it could be Hampton stone circle or the valley of the stones circle or the one at Littlebredy – all within walking or pony and trap distance from their estate.

As Peter Knight mentions in his book, Ancient Stones of Dorset there is a very high density of sacred sites in this area.

Dorset Council installing low carbon technologies Work to improve energy efficiency and install low carbon technologies with £19m of grant funding has begun at over 60 businesses, schools and public spaces.

County Hall in Dorchester is the latest site where updates and upgrades are being implemented, with solar panels and replacement windows installed to help reduce emissions along with

an air source heat pump to and low energy lighting throughout. Free air cooling, an approach to lowering air temperature by using naturally cool air, will be installed in the council’s data centre.

During February half-term, solar panels were installed at Salway Ash Primary School, Cheselbourne Village School and Conifers Primary School.

The project is possible thanks

to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme grant, following a bid from the council’s Sustainability Team and Assets and Property. The works form part of the council’s plan to meet its 2040 carbon neutral target.

Cllr Ray Bryan, Dorset Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said: “As well as the impact it will have on

the council’s own carbon footprint, we hope the expected co-benefits, such as financial savings on energy costs, will encourage others to explore similar measures for their own properties.

“Colleagues are working hard to ensure the project is delivered on time, making the best use of the funding to make our buildings greener and cleaner.”

The builders are busy in our spring garden Sally Cooke lives in Tolpuddle with her husband, two grown up sons and her spotty rescue dog. The bird nesting season has started in earnest and everywhere I look there’s a bird gathering up building materials or heading purposefully off with a beakful.

Over the years at least six different species have nested in our garden and they all have their own preferred building methods and division of labour between the sexes.

I’m excited that robins are nesting in our garden for the first time this year.

It’s been wonderful watching the female taking moss, moss and more moss into a globe birdhouse we’ve positioned among some climbers on the fence.

The male robin doesn’t get involved but supports her with food while she’s building it.

The house sparrows are our main residents. They make their scruffy nests in holes in our wooden cladding and in terraced nesting boxes.

Both sexes get involved in collecting dried grass, moss and feathers, but one of their favourite nesting materials is garden twine. I

couldn’t work out why the strings around my broad beans kept unravelling until I spotted a gang of sparrows tugging at them!

In the hope that they’ll leave my beans alone now, every year I tie a bundle of cut lengths of twine on a nearby tree for them to help themselves to.

They’re also partial to the warmth and softness of dog hair, if I groom the dog outside the sparrows rush around gathering up the balls of fluff before they blow away.

The starlings (much to the sparrows’ disdain) also nest in the cladding. It is the male starling that starts the nest, he will then sing from the nearby pear tree to attract a female.

She’ll then go in and finish the nest off with fine moss and feathers.

Woodpigeons also nest regularly in our garden and both sexes will work hard, bringing in hundreds of twigs to make their nest in the hedge.

It’s a real privilege when a wild bird chooses to nest around our home so I’m always careful to give them the space they need.

Birds will abandon a nest if they feel threatened or disturbed too much.

Fortunately, I can keep an eye on the robin’s nest from a window and I have a nestbox camera to watch the sparrows!

Exploring multiple uses of the stinging nettle FORAGING

The stinging settle is the plant that fights back, and almost invariably the first one we learn. Tears are shed, parents either fuss or, as in my case, tell the little darlings to put up with it.

For all the trivial pain it causes, stinging nettles give back a thousand-fold as food, as a dye, a medicine, even as clothing, and they are at their very best now.

Nip off the top half a dozen opposite pairs of leaves.

These are the best, and the stem is still succulent and not so much like a length of string. Avoid any that have produced their drooping flowers, as the plant will be poor in flavour and texture

and can contain microneedle crystals of calcium oxalate that may cause health problems.

Now is the high season, but any nettle bed that is cut back will produce successive harvests of young growth, perhaps as many as four or five, running on until November. Apart from the obvious, and superb, nettle soup (for which I suggest including a potato for substance and using a good stock to add flavour), nettles can be used in any recipe that calls for spinach, with the slightly obvious exception of salad.

As it happens, nettles are

perfectly safe to eat raw and quite pleasant in taste, you just have to roll each leaf into a tight ball to crush the hollow, toxinprimed needles that cause so much distress. When cooking nettles, it is worth simply blanching them – one minute in boiling water, followed by a couple of minutes in iced water. This will cook them enough for most things and ensure that the colour remains a bright green, not an unappetising brown, as can often happen.

Once chopped, the blanched nettles can made into pesto or sauce to mix in with pasta. I frequently squeeze the blanched nettles dry in a tea towel,

then chop them until they turn into a (slightly damp) powder. This can be combined with flour and egg yolk to make a pasta verdi. You can even deepfry the individual leaves.

Whatever you do, you will be assured that your meal contains at least one outstandingly nutritious ingredient. Nettles provide an alphabet of vitamins and a substantial proportion of the periodic table, plus lots of ‘anti’s’ – anti-diabetic, antioxidant, antimutagenic, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, plus analgesic. A high-street apothecary shop in a leaf. Just don’t get stung too much.

I especially liked the article

by Nick Cole on the persecution of raptors, particularly to the whitetailed eagle recently killed in Dorset. He set out the facts of the situation clearly and dispassionately.

These splendid creatures are being hunted and killed by people looking to preserve their lucrative “sport” of (ironically) hunting and killing other birds. They justify their actions with tenuous claims of danger to livestock and pets. As with most crimes, the motivation is always money.

Delays not new I read your article dated February 25, (Grieving family’s anguish at 10-hour ambulance delay) and feel sorry for all involved.

My late mother-in-law was terrible for calling 999 for nonsense and, because she was over 90, they always came. In contrast was the time when my husband, then aged 66 and at that time recently diagnosed

with terminal brain cancer, collapsed in the kitchen only a few feet from the settee.

My family and I were trying to get him on the settee temporarily until we could get a hospital bed.

We rang 999 after trying for 20 minutes to move him a few feet to the settee and were told that paramedics couldn’t come until 8am the next day. His legs had given way at 10pm.

We spent the next two hours finding a way to move him the few feet which, with total agony on

This was in 2018 before covid.

Seek out the sweet violet next time you go for a walk.

Sweet violet (Viola odorata) Early flowering plants are often associated with woodlands, performing their urge to flower and set seed before becoming swamped by other vegetation. The sweet violet is a delightful native, a low growing perennial with oblong heartshaped leaves that colonise shady spaces including

hedgerows and gardens. As their vernacular and scientific names suggest, these plants are highly scented, but they also have an unusual effect on our sense of smell. The more you sniff them, the less they smell. A chemical in the flower’s fragrance momentarily disables our perception to it, only to be restored a short time later.

Standing up to constant Russian provocation I must begin this week with a huge thank you to the many local people who have donated and organised donations to be delivered to the Ukraine.

It is such a wonderful act of kindness and I’m sure we will need more in the coming weeks.

Most days in the House of Commons, we are receiving statements from the Foreign Secretary about Ukraine and the latest that the United Kingdom Government is doing to help.

Everything from sending arms to offering sanctuary and working with other nations to ensure an aligned approach.

I receive almost daily briefings from the Foreign Office on the latest. And I can tell you this is a very

serious situation that poses many mid- and long-term risks to us.

Ukraine surrendered its nuclear defence on the promise that it would never be invaded.

The Russian ambassador told the Foreign Secretary that Russia would not invade Ukraine - but of course they have, with full force.

It has become clear that our government’s efforts to reach a diplomatic and political solution are very unlikely to solve this situation.

Russia has told Sweden and Finland not to consider NATO membership as there will be political and military consequences.

The French Navy has intercepted a Russian ship in the English Channel on Saturday and we know that there are Russian submarines in the North Atlantic with considerable capability.

In Ukraine, on the television, we’ve seen courage from citizens taking up arms, in a way we would liken to the Second World War. I find that very moving but it makes me feel that we should do more to help an innocent democracy.

Direct involvement will trigger a third world war.

We will have to contend with Russia likely provoking our reaction in the coming days and weeks.

It wants us to react. It has

provoked us for many years.

We have not stood up to it previously – but I fear we shall have to put down some clear red lines and have to reconsider our position going forward, because we are dealing with a Russia that knows no bounds.

I met with Ukrainian Ambassador Vadym Prystaiko on Wednesday to discuss Ukraine and efforts taken by the people of West Dorset to provide help and support.

The Ukrainian Ambassador was extremely grateful to everyone in West Dorset who has helped and especially grateful to the Prince of Wales School when I showed him the photos of their colossal effort.

Why did you decide to open a removals business?

We saw that there was a lack of affordable and adaptable companies in the area. So, we filled the gap by offering a multitude of services all under one roof.

What does a typical day look like?

No day is ever the same!

Some days are very long if we are multi county or heading to Wales or Scotland. Other days are shorter and completely West

Dorset based. The variation keeps the work interesting for the team. One day they could be packing up a client’s entire life and doing an overnight removal to perhaps Edinburgh, and the next day we could be picking up local auction runs and laying new decking overlooking the Jurassic Coast.

What do you love about your job?

Without a doubt the mix of team and client banter and team work. We are a closeknit team and the reviews and comments we get make all the hard work worthwhile.

What do you like least about your job?

Cancellations and fuel prices!

Good earning potential?

It’s swings and roundabouts like all businesses. We tend to put it all back into the business which is why we have expanded from one vehicle in 2016 to a fleet of five and a team of 11 today.

Global solidarity needed in a complex situation It’s always precarious writing about fast-moving political situations but the Russian invasion of Ukraine is too monumental, and has too many implications, to pass without comment.

Whilst the complexity of this situation obviously resists any simple analysis, three particular issues are at the front of my thinking.

There needs to be an investigation and public debate about the extent to which the UK has encouraged the situation in Russia.

A recent article in The Economist reported a “strong connection between Russian money and illicit finance”, whilst in 2020 Parliament’s intelligence committee concluded that London was a “laundromat” for tainted

Russian money.

Of even greater concern, perhaps, is the accusation that since Boris Johnson became Prime Minister the Conservative Party has accepted more than £2million from donors linked to Russia.

We need to know what influence these donors have had on the government.

With the obvious exception that this conflict escalates into a nuclear exchange, a major threat to the UK arises from a global energy shortage resulting from Russia shutting down its gas supply to Europe.

As a matter of priority we need to become self-

sufficient in energy.

We need to do this, however, without resorting to the exploitation of any gas and oil reserves we may have – these need to remain firmly in the ground.

We need to rapidly develop our use of off-shore wind and on-shore solar such that we become far more resilient against global threats.

One of the mantras of the Green movement has been the need to “think globally but act locally”. As I’m hoping will be demonstrated, the way to deal with leaders like Putin is through strong international collaboration.

We must resist any urge to ‘go it alone’, and we must do all we can to avoid escalation. The only way is to show global solidarity and effectively isolate such

regimes, a response that requires us to prioritise international cooperation over competition.

We need global solutions to global problems, and this invasion must be understood and responded to as a major global threat. The potential effects, whether they be nuclear, financial or mass human migration, will affect us all. We need to work together to resolve them. But such cooperation should not prevent us from making the UK infrastructure, and particularly our energy supply, more resilient against potential global threats. And this global cooperation needs to be open to public scrutiny, not done via donations of ‘dirty money’ to political parties to gain back-door influence.

Let’s turn to West Dorset’s bus services for a moment.

Bus services have been decimated in Dorset over the last 12 years.

Local government funding has been slashed by over 40% and as Dorset Council struggled to meet rising demand with ever less funding, spending on buses was cut by 80%.

There are now just a handful of subsidised bus routes and private bus companies will not run services which they deem to be unprofitable.

Imagine how a single mum with young children is cut off and isolated in a West

Dorset village with no bus service: Going shopping or going to the doctor’s means paying costly taxi fares.

Weekends and school outings and trips are out of reach.

Dorset Council is waiting to hear whether there will be anything for us in the Government’s Bus Back Better fund but I won’t hold my breath.

The social, economic and environmental benefits that come from having affordable reliable and integrated public transport are truly worth investing in.

They extend to the whole community young and old which is why we need publicly owned transport that puts passengers before profit.

Putting passengers before profit on transport South Western Railway has reinstated its normal timetable and West Dorset MP Chris Loder seems to be treating this as a win thanks to his personal efforts.

The rail provider stopped through trains to London from stations west of Bournemouth because of staff shortages due to covid and there was concern that we might be stuck with this situation long term.

But Mr Loder completely ignores the fact that since March 2020 trains serving West Dorset have been cut from two per hour to just one an hour.

In addition, the late train from Waterloo was axed so I’m afraid nights out in London are off the cards

We’re on a mission to save our planet These youngsters are doing their bit to reduce plastic packaging in their school lunchboxes.

Pupils at Stickland’s Primary School in Evershot have formed an ecocommittee, which meets weekly to come up with ideas to protect the planet. The first mission the group set themselves was to cut as much

plastic packaging out of their lunches as possible.

Chloe in Year Six said: “I’m passionate about the world and climate as it’s where we live, and we need to help it. Stickland’s needs to become more eco-friendly so that the next generation knows what bees and dolphins are.”

Bea in Year Six said: “I’m passionate about saving our planet.

It’s important to make Sticklands an eco-friendly school so that our planet is protected.

“We must raise awareness – this means cutting down the amount of carbon dioxide we use and promoting a love for our planet.”

Crumbs! How the humble biscuit Sent to Dorset’s fighting men in Africa during the Boer War and reportedly a breakfast favourite of Thomas Hardy, the humble Dorset Knob biscuit is as popular today as it was when it was first created. With Dorchester’s Prince of Wales School making national headlines for introducing knob throwing to its curriculum and customer demand recently outstripping supply, what better time than now to look back at exactly how this tasty little snack was created before it worked its way into the hearts (and lunchboxes) of Dorset folk for generations.

Our story begins on March 22, 1815, in a grim and gritty Fordington, Dorchester, where William Pitcher from Powerstock and Maria Longman from Rimpton Mill were married at St George’s Church.

It is hard to imagine what would have drawn the young couple from their rural homes to the densely populated parish town but they did not stick around for long.

The newlyweds quickly quit the town and headed west, settling in Litton Cheney and worshipping at the town’s original church, dedicated to St Mary.

The couple went on have ten children, who were all baptized at the church, including their eldest daughter Maria.

A miller by trade, William Pitcher taught all his children how to bake, with many of them later becoming millers

themselves, but it was Maria who really took her father’s lessons to heart.

By all accounts Maria was a formidable woman, with striking looks and great strength.

She was known for handling a sack of flour as well as any man and had a reputation for getting her own way.

Early in 1852, Maria married John Bligdon, a boot and shoemaker from Litton Cheney. Soon after their marriage, Maria, who until then had been working as a servant, persuaded her husband to let her launch a bakery in the village.

This bakery became known as White Cross Bakers and, later, White Cross Grocer and Baker Shop.

The business started in a small way, with one assistant, but quickly grew.

Bakery products were delivered by horse and cart to villages within a tenmile radius.

In 1881 many villages in Dorset were cut off for days because of deep snow. To meet the pressing need of some of the villages, Maria sent out a convoy of horses shod with special nails to prevent slipping to ensure her customers had bread.

At this time Maria employed three bakers, and it is one of these bakers who brought her

achieved global fame, with knobs on

the recipe for the now world-famous Dorset Knob biscuit.

Named after the Dorset knob button, the recipe calls for a bread dough with extra sugar and butter.

The biscuits are then roughly shaped by hand and baked three times to achieve their crumbly, crunchy texture.

According to Thomas Hardy’s parlour maid, Nellie Titterington, the

speciality of the bakery and sold for sixpence a pound; Maria’s gooseberry tart was also very popular by all accounts.

During this time those who were less fortunate, living off parish relief and seeking employment, were given penny bread tickets, which the bakery accepted towards the cost of a loaf of bread, around four pence at the time.

Maria’s bakery would accept about £5 worth of tickets every month.

Given that in those days there were two hundred and forty pence to the pound, Mrs Bligdon’s bakery was clearly very busy.

Food, wool, holiday lets: Farm shop

The farm shop is a rapidly growing phenomenon.

There seem to be farm shops everywhere now, and long may they prosper.

But few only sell the food they produce.

In 1960, Arthur and Josephine Pearse started Tamarisk Farm in West Bexington, mainly to produce good food for their six children.

They then opened a shop to sell the meat, veg and arable products they reared and grew.

Their daughter Ellen and her husband Adam Simon joined them on the land in the 80s, gradually becoming more involved in the business until they took over in 2000.

Now a third generation has joined them, with the Simons’ daughter Leila, 31, and her partner Ben Scriven, 34, bringing the farm up to date with a super website and a lively social media presence.

food production. Their extended family live in the village too, and offer four holiday lets on the farm’s website, tamariskfarm. co.uk.

“It has been described as a bit Hobbit-like,” says Leila.

Leila and Ben were living wholly different lives in London when they decided

to return to rural life.

Leila was working in a fabric shop, Ben in a secondary school. But, six years ago, they realised they could have just as much disposable income working on the farm as toiling away for employers in the city, taking their living costs into account.

ourselves ‘apprentice’ farmers,” says Leila.

Ben grew up in a village in Wiltshire, but not in farming. He’s the tech savvy member of the family.

The pair threw themselves into the Tamarisk Farm activities, with Leila continuing to work with fabric on the side – she still toils away, making bridesmaids’ dresses, jackets and trousers after working on the farm all day.

“I like both,” she said.

“When I’m not farming, I’m dressmaking.

“I make bespoke items and try to make ethical stuff using organic fabrics. The ultimate dream would be able to make jacket out of my own fabric.

“Bespoke clothes are better fitting, with better quality materials and better made and that doesn’t come cheap. But it’s part of the ethical way we choose to live – having less but making sure it’s better quality.”

Prreset the oven to 180C or 160C fan oven

290ml/10fl oz milk 125g/4 1/2oz dried apricots, chopped

Ingredients 4 hot cross buns 60g/2oz butter 3 eggs, beaten 200g/7oz Greek yoghurt 60g/2oz soft brown sugar

Method Slice the buns vertically into thick slices. Butter one side of each slice.

Layer them a bit like roof tiles into a buttered oven proof dish. Scatter over the chopped apricots.

still evolving over more than 60 years their most popular offerings. Six years ago, Rosie Gilcrest was taken on to oversee this part of the farm, and she has employed a ‘no dig’ system. All your basic veg is here, with peppers, tomatoes and aubergines, but Rosie has also successfully grown melons, and likes to grow something surprising and new each year.

There’s no waste here, and nothing brought in to fatten the animals up.

The family’s beef cattle and sheep are all grass fed and slow grown, with extra food for the chickens coming from extra arable products also produced on the farm. They grow wheat, rye and barley and mill it themselves using a small electric stone mill.

Leila said: “We only sell wholemeal flour, which makes delicious bread but is also good for cakes.”

A bakery could be in the offing at some stage – Leila likes to experiment with the flour and has made some moreish digestive biscuits. As we speak, she is awaiting the

Leila added: “Most large mills nowadays are steel ones, which means the flour gets hotter as it’s milled and loses some of its nutrients.”

The family also use smaller machinery for the arable work because they can mostly maintain it themselves. “My dad is brilliant at fixing the machinery,” Leila said.

Continuing the no waste ethos, the multi-hued sheepskins produced at the farm are tanned in Devon.

Leila said “We have a delivery coming in the next couple of weeks, which is always exciting.

“We have five different breeds of sheep here: tablespoon to encourage them to absorb the liquid, then place the dish into a large roasting tin and fill with boiling water until it comes halfway up the side of the dish.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until the custard is set.

Serve with cream or yoghurt.

Hebrideans, Shetlands, Herdwicks, Jacobs and Dorset Downs, which makes for a huge variety of different colours and textures.”

They also sell undyed knitting wool in all natural shades – whites, greys, browns and blacks.

Leila said: “A lot of what we do is conservation grazing and the animals are a vital part of that.

“We grow a lot of different wildflowers that are quite rare nationally. We try not to let the animals munch on the special ones but by grazing on them they help rare plants grow.”

When we think of charcuterie, we automatically think ‘French’, because it is a French word, but the French it seems, no longer have supremacy: ‘Les Anglais sont arrivés’!

British producers have ventured into the world of charcuterie, and it seems they are proving themselves to be a formidable contender.

Nestled in a valley, surrounded by chalk hills of the Dorset Downs, lies the village of Rampisham, and it’s here that we find the enterprising multiaward-winning British artisan charcutier, Capreolus. Turning their hobby of curing meats into an industry, owners David, and Karen’s passion for their product is clear to see.

Delivering to retailers across the British Isles, they have developed their award-winning business.

n Summer is on its way, and a Charcuterie platter, with some pickles and fresh sour dough bread makes for easy, inexpensive but impressive entertaining.

Try the smoked mutton with a celeriac and apple remoulade. Mix grated celeriac and apple with four tbsp mayonnaise with one tsp Dijon mustard, three tbsp creme fraiche two tbsp chopped parsley with salt/pepper to taste.

Felicity’s Farm Shop is rather felicitous With the current rising costs in fuel, I am even more determined to shop locally. I stopped at Felicity’s Farm Shop, situated on the A35 at Morcombelake.

A truly welcoming place, its cheerfulness resonates around the building that locals will know, was once a petrol station. One wanders around taking in the splendour and selection of goodies with the

appreciation of a child in a sweetshop. A family business which began in 2010, Felicity is proud of what she has accomplished and quite rightly so.

I visited on a quiet Monday, but this place was buzzing. Its site is a holidaymaker’s honeypot, an oasis on a long journey west.

The scent of cooking bacon wafts around the rafters and hot coffee

entices people towards the lively takeaway. This place oozes quirky panache, with plants, bric a brac and plenty of ‘Made in Dorset’ merchandise, but it also provides practical products, with fresh crusty, floury bread and milk. Baskets of lush leafy cabbages complete with droplets of dew, only demonstrates the freshness of their products. Its humility is Felicity’s secret.

This is a great idea to make mum a cake for Mother’s Day but do make sure you clean up afterwards!

Fortunately that’s easy to do with this appealing and super-simple cake.

Blood Orange Cake Blood oranges are gorgeous at the moment.

Available from January to March, they have a deep red flesh so if you can get hold of any you will end up with a delicious pinktinged cake.

Look out for those from Italy or California – or anywhere where the night temperature drops to -1 degree.

The pleasant tart flavour gives a hint of sharpness to this recipe, but if you can’t get blood oranges, just grab a couple of regular ones from the fruit bowl – they will be delicious too.

All you need to do for this recipe is stick it all in a bowl and mix …

Ingredients 300g sunflower oil 320g caster sugar 5 eggs 120g almonds 220g self-raising flour 2 oranges (zest and juice) 100g soft butter 300g icing sugar Switch the oven on at Gas 4/180C Grease and line a 22 -23cm square tin cake tin with baking parchment.

Alternatively, use two 20cm round sponge tins.

Put the oil, sugar, eggs, almonds, self-raising flour and the orange zest in a bowl, mix it well and fairly quickly until the ingredients are just incorporated but do avoid over mixing.

Pour the mixture into the cake tin and pop it in the oven for around 25 - 30 mins until golden brown on top and a skewer comes out clean.

Take the skewer and prick the cake all over and pour a few tablespoons of orange

juice over the cake.

Leave it to rest for five minutes and then slip the cake out of the tin.

Leave the cake to cool.

In the meantime, put the softened butter in a bowl with the icing sugar and beat well.

I always drape a tea towel over the bowl and turn the mixer on otherwise you (and everything else) end up covered in icing sugar.

Add the rest of the orange juice and beat well until you have a smooth butter icing.

Cut your cake in half so

that you have two equally sized rectangles.

Spread the icing over the cakes and pop one half on top of the other.

Pop it on a plate and you could consider decorating it with flaked almonds or edible flower petals or just leave it as it is. Enjoy a slice with a cup of tea. n Lizzie can be found outside her home in Upwey every Saturday morning.

We all hate a soggy bottom – so do orchids Orchids are amongst the most popular houseplants to receive as gifts.

Their bright, showy, long-lived flowers make them perfect presents that continue to reward for months, and with the right care, years. Problems with their care often start after their flowers fade, when the showpiece of your room turns into a dull rosette of dark green leaves, making them easy to ignore.

Unsurprisingly, neglect means they can dry to a crisp or sit in water, often in quick succession. Their leaves then lose their lustre, get dusty, then get placed outside for a brief stopover before their final destination, the compost heap.

BEAUTY: The moth orchid

Fortunately, there is hope. By understanding their natural growing conditions, you can succeed with orchids and enjoy blooms year after year.

Most orchids sold as houseplants are quite different from most other plants.

This is because they naturally occur as epiphytes, high in the canopy of tropical rainforests.

Epiphytes are plants that find their home on another plant, they have no attachment to the ground and are not parasitic on their host. Orchids have evolved their successful way of life tens of meters above the forest floor, where light levels are more favourable than the ground below, yet shielded from intense direct sunlight by the leaves of its host tree.

Understanding this, we can deduce that orchids enjoy warmth, prefer a well-lit situation but not direct sunlight, experience frequent rainfall, but critically, live

somewhere where water quickly drains away.

If we can mimic these conditions at home, then success is in our grasp.

If you have (or have had!) an orchid, then you have probably noticed the plants are potted in course bark not soil.

This is like the type of material found in its high-rise home and provides superb drainage.

As a result, the watering technique differs from other houseplants.

The way I irrigate orchids is by placing each in an empty washing-up bowl, I then pour around a pint of water (with a small amount of orchid fertilizer), into the pot from a jug. The water immediately drains out into the bowl. Then remove the plant from the bowl and allow it to drain, before placing it back in its usual spot. The water and fertilizer mix in the bowl is then recycled back into the jug where I repeat the procedure for the next orchid.

Watering is done approximately weekly but reduced to every ten days or so in winter.

Orchids hate sitting in water, so it is vital to drain them sufficiently, especially if you place them into an attractive pot cover with nowhere for water to escape.

Unfortunately, orchids are sometimes sold in very inappropriate containers.

A friend delighted over a plant she received at Christmas; it was planted directly into a glass vase and consequently lacked drainage.

Despite looking attractive, the container made it impossible to water appropriately, buyer beware.

Another odd thing about epiphytic orchids is that they are often sold in clear, plastic pots.

Despite this, new roots are more inclined to wander around the pot rather than in it.

This might seem curious behaviour for a plant, it gets even more interesting when you notice that the roots appear greenish in colour. This pigment is in fact chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis. So, contrary to what you may learn in GCSE Biology, the roots of some plants are capable of photosynthesis and for this reason the clear pots allow light to reach the roots. To fully understand this, we need to return to the tropical treetops, where orchid roots creep along branches gaining a secure footing for the plant but at the same time contributing to photosynthesis. So, if you are tempted to take a pair of scissors to tidy these roots, think again, orchids rely on them.

When Oxford graduate, historian and author Bob Machin came to Dorset in 1969, he found the landscape so enthralling he never wanted to leave.

Bob embarked on a tour of the county and he never forgot the first journey along the many narrow and winding lanes.

Bob said: “I still remember trying to drive from Bridport across Marshwood Vale and after an hour I ended up where I had started from.”

Settling in Askerswell before West Bay with his wife Marcia, Bob became the resident tutor at Bristol University before teaching a sequence of evening classes in Yetminster on traditional Dorset farmhouses followed by the landscape history of Blackmore Vale.

Bob said: “Once I arrived in Dorset, I didn’t want to move anywhere else – I think it is the landscape that enthrals me,” he said. “And I was always left wondering how this landscape was created. Farmhouses took over my life but after retirement I revisited landscape history.”

Retirement provided time to investigate, and Bob spent the next five years reading the many hundreds if not thousands of documents in Dorset History Centre, researching the

information and piecing together all that they meant.

“There were several surprises,” said Bob. “Marshwood is not mentioned until 1100.

Before then it was ‘Hawcombe’ – an uncultivated waste used as a royal hunting ground.

There is no evidence for any settlement here before 897 when King Alfred built a ‘White Church’.

“The Domesday Book shows that in 1086 half the Vale was still uncultivated. Settlements were small, poor and scattered across the slopes leading down to ‘the marsh by a wood’.

“By the early 13th century this was dominated by two large deer parks that did not become farms until 1583.”

Armed with a hypothesis, Bob tested it on the

Marshwood Vale and said: “So many people living in Marshwood Vale became aware of what I was doing that I felt obliged to publish the findings.”

Bob has now published Marshwood Vale: The Making of a Landscape.

The book includes 49 maps and 31 photographs and already Bob has sold copies.

Strike up the band for 40 years of Once a year St Marys Church in Beaminster has been the perfect setting for a concert by the Fairey Band from Heaton Chapel, Stockport. The West Dorset Magazine takes a closer look at how one of the most famous names in banding has made the 500-mile round trip, every year for more than 40 years to the peace and tranquillity of rural West Dorset.

The inspiration for these concerts came from two former players of the long gone Beaminster Band, Tony and Margaret Greenham. Whilst Margaret had been a baritone player, Tony could be found on tenor horn and later, three of their children also joined the band.

In 1977 the Fairey Band performed a concert in Crewkerne. Tony and Margaret hosted three of the players and struck up a lasting friendship with bass player Cliff Colwell.

Tony said: “Cliff invited us to spend several holidays with his family near Stockport, and consequently we went to several Fairey concerts in the area. Cliff wanted the band to come to Beaminster, so at one of the concerts we asked musical director Walter Hargreaves if he would do just that. They were somewhat taken aback as he agreed there and then on one condition - that we supplied him with some bottles of whiskey!”

The concert was arranged for September 22, 1979, in the local school, but tragically Cliff, who had organised the event, suffered a heart attack and died suddenly on July 1, just weeks before the concert was due to take place.

The band performed at Beaminster Church, bringing with them the British Open Championship shield they had won at Belle Vue in Manchester and Walter had his whiskey. And as a tribute to Cliff, Tony and Margaret served steak and kidney pie and trifle at their home for all the band members, just as Cliff had requested.

Tony said: “Walter remained with us for another full week after the band had left, answering our telephone as if he lived there. On the Monday, Walter asked if there was a local band, which there

was in Bridport. A phone call later and there was Walter conducting and coaching them that evening, What and experience!

“The concert proved a huge success and two years after the first concert, we had outgrown

the school and moved the concert to the church.

Since then, the band has become a firm favourite in Beaminster, making many friends. We have also been lucky to have had many famous conductors leading the band including Walter Hargreaves, Dr Roy Newsome, Peter Parkes, Derek Broadbent, Gary Cutt and Howard Snell.”

Cornet player Brian Taylor has performed at every concert by The Fairey Band in Beaminster. He was just 20 years old when he first came to the town.

In the first concert he played The Water Mill by Ronald Binge and at the 30th anniversary in 2008,

Brian was presented a painting of himself at the water mill. Mark Peacock came to Beaminster with the Fairey Band during the 1990s and for the last eight years has conducted the band.

Over the years the concerts have raised more than £60,000 for charity with previous beneficiaries including Weldmar Hospicecare, Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes, Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance, British Heart Foundation and St Marys Church. Tony and Margaret’s efforts were recognised in 2013 when the band made them honorary vice presidents.

And in 2020 Tony was awarded The British Empire medal for his fundraising efforts and his work with The Royal British Legion.

WELCOME RETURN: The Fairey Band in Beaminster

In May this year, Tony and Margaret will attend the garden party at Buckingham Palace.

“It has been a team effort,” said Tony. “Many thanks must go to all helpers, hosts and sponsors in Beaminster and the surrounding areas who over the past years have helped make this all possible.

“All thoughts of retirement ended when we saw the reception and standing ovation the Fairey Band received at the conclusion of our last concert.”

Theatre lovers won’t have to wait until June for a taste of culture as thespians from Beaminster Festival have teamed up with the Horticultural Society to bring Old Herbaceous to the public hall on Friday, April 1.

Dubbed by The Guardian as ‘Downton Abbey with gardening tips’, Old Herbaceous by Reginald Arkell, dramatised by Alfred Shaughnessy with Peter Maqueen, pictured, playing Old Herbaceous, is love story about a gentle minded man with a passion for plants.

of a Gloucestershire manor house is Herbert Pinnegar.

Now in his twilight years he is full of memories and tales of a bygone era.

In between potting up and potting on, he recounts his journey from orphan boy to legendary head gardener Old Herbaceous and tells of his friendship with the lady of the house, Mrs. Charteris.

Culture Dorchester Drama will be taking its latest production, Trap for a Lonely Man, on a mini local tour in early April.

The group usually performs in Dorchester, so thespians will be holding evening performances, and treading the boards in village halls in Moreton, Broadmayne and Martinstown for the first time.

Written by Robert Thomas in 1963, the play is a taut psychological thriller, set in an isolated chalet in the French Alps concerning a man who has apparently lost his wife, and is rapidly losing his mind.

After reporting his wife’s disappearance to the police, his wife enters the chalet however, he is outraged to discover that she is not his wife, although she insists she is.

It becomes increasingly apparent that the protagonist is facing a conspiracy, The tension mounts as the mystery unfolds to its final moments.

String quartet in concert for St George’s Day The first ever Cattistock in Concert performance will be held next month.

The Cassandra String Quartet will perform at Cattistock Parish Church on Saturday, April 23 at 7.30pm.

Organisers say the concert will include Haydn’s Quartet Op 76 No 1 in G Major, Britten’s The Simple Symphony, Mozart’s Quartet in E flat major K428 as well as a ‘light-

hearted piece, with a possible reference to St George’s Day’.

The quartet consists of professional West Dorset based musicians Gillian Wallace on first violin, Polly OrrEwing on second violin, Deborah Johns on viola and Kathryn Foyle on cello.

There is no charge for this concert but suggested donations of £10 per

It’s a double date for New Elizabethans

For more than 60 years since its inception, the Bridport-based New Elizabethan Singers have performed a wide range of choral works, from the long-forgotten to the contemporary and covering most of the better-known classical compositions.

In April the singers will be joining the Broadoak Choir, in what they describe as a ‘privilege and great pleasure’ to present two concerts in Bridport and Crewkerne.

And the programme of beautiful music has been composed within the last five by two gifted local musicians, who both live in Broadoak.

New Elizabethan singer, Alan Hobby said: “Those who know the Bridport area well will not be surprised to hear that they have such sparkling talent living among them – it blooms in various forms of artistry all over the town

and surrounding countryside and has long done so.

“Do not miss this concert of wonderfully uplifting music, grown organically in the Marshwood Vale and composed and performed

Musical director Matt Kingston, pen-name Matthew Coleridge, has been at the helm since 2011.

His first composition, the Corpus Christi Carol,

appeared on BBC Music Magazine’s Christmas CD in 2015.

His Requiem was premiered in 2015 and has received numerous, acclaimed performances in the UK, the US and Europe, integrating broad lush vocal harmonies with exhilarating organ, string and percussion accompaniments and solo passages.

Matt said: “It was inspired by the joy of the arrival of

my first child and the beauty of the Dorset countryside.”

With his roots in folk and jazz, bass singer Chris Reynolds has written several liturgical pieces for the a cappella Broadoak Choir, which he has directed for 17 years. His 2019 choral cantata Three Trees, is a mystical, moving meditation on crucifixion and redemption and reflects on the mystery and magic of real trees and the beauty of creation and how close humankind is to destroying it.

The New Elizabethan Singers and The Broadoak Choir will perform two choral pieces on April 9 at 7pm in St Mary’s Church in Bridport.

Tickets are available at £12 from Goadsby in Bridport and is free to under-18s A repeat performance will take place at St Bartholomew’s Church in Crewkerne at 3.30pm.

The concert is free with a retiring collection.

Ever wonder what Hardy’s Tess did next?

An ambitious sequel to one of Thomas Hardy’s most beloved tales has been penned.

The Second Mrs Clare by Mike Langridge is a sequel to Tess of the d’Urbervilles, which was published in 1891.

The new novel follows the lives of the characters beyond the final chapter of Hardy’s classic novel.

The idea for the story came after Michael Langridge and his wife Caroline adapted Tess of the d’Urbervilles for the

London stage in 2018.

Mike said: “I have always been an enormous fan of Thomas Hardy novels and love the richness of his prose and the overwhelming poetical and emotional power of the stories.

“These books, with their convoluted narratives full of misadventure, love, and tragedy, have totally captivated me, and subsequently I have revisited them many times.

Folk looking forward to folk festival Excitement is beginning to build for the return of the Bridport Folk Festival from June 22 to 24.

For two days Bridport will buzz with live musical performances on open air stages, morris dancing, food stalls, creative workshops and kids’ activities on Millennium Green and throughout the town.

Organisers are now calling for sponsors and volunteers to come forward and help them put

the event together.

An event spokesman said: “A huge thank you to everyone who has contacted us about volunteering to help with the festival so far.

Brewery makes its move for Royal Lion A Dorset brewery is set to tap into a new market after buying The Royal Lion Hotel in Lyme Regis.

The 17th century inn will be the first pub to be owned and operated by Hall & Woodhouse in the seaside town.

Mark James, property director at Hall & Woodhouse, said: “We are delighted to purchase the highly successful Royal Lion Hotel and carry on the good work of former owner Lesley Stone, who operated the hotel for over 19 years.”

Sherborne is one of 100 towns offering a range of £5 deals from a host of independent businesses to highlight the contribution local shops bring to the economy.

Sherborne organiser Jane Wood said: “Fiver Fest happens three times per year and it is now a big part of our promotions for Sherborne. The

independent shops and businesses are what makes our town special and unique. The community support for local businesses has been amazing during lockdown, but it is easy to slip back into old shopping habits now that things are returning to normal.

Sherborne Market, GoatHill Farm, Vineyards and The Yeatman Hospital each walked away with two gongs at the second Sherborne Business Awards.

Sherborne Market was named Independent Business of the Year and also overall Business of the Year, GoatHill Farm received the Green/Eco Business of the Year and Excellence in Customer Service awards while Vinyards picked up the awards for Digital Innovation and Retail Business and The Yeatman Hospital won the Community Support and Ongoing Commitment to a Safer Working Environment awards.

Other awards went to Communifit, Elly Harvey Silver and Barker Group, among others.

Some 50 local business leaders attended the lunchtime presentation ceremony, which was held at Leweston School, with the framed awards presented to winners by the Mayor of Sherborne Anne Hall.

Organiser Nigel Reeve, of Marketing West Events said: “This was the second year of the awards and entries were up year on year by ten per cent. The category with the highest number of entries was the Green/Eco Business of the Year, which shows how Sherborne is adapting to current issues. This was closely followed by the Excellence in Customer Service award.

New staff help to slash land charge waiting times The time it takes Dorset Council to complete requests for land charge searches has halved, according to the latest figures, thanks to six new members of staff and system changes.

For the month of February, the average time to return a search was 26 working days compared to an average of 62 days last October.

A report to the council’s Place and Resources Scrutiny Committee last September explained the delays were mainly due to

a record number of searches requested during the covid pandemic, some staff vacancies and system changes.

In response Dorset Council employed six new members of staff to expand the team. As part of the Planning Convergence and

Transformation project the land charges team are now working on one software platform and this has helped the team reduce the delays.

Work will continue to harmonise the Land Charges registers from the former district and borough councils and the team are looking at creating a land charges portal where customers could submit and pay for their search enquiry electronically.

and Transformation, said: “This is an incredible achievement when last year we received almost twice the number of land charge searches that we normally manage.

“I am very grateful for all the hard work that the staff have put in we continue to work to reduce the time that searches take and hope to get them down to 10 days in the next few months “It is good news for anyone buying or selling their property, which we know can be a stressful time.”

Caring is natural: it can’t be taught

It is said that home is where the heart is, and at Coneygar Lodge in Bridport it is the big-hearted care staff and the owners’ vision which is giving residents the home from home experience.

Since Ted and Wendy Cross bought Coneygar Lodge in 1999, it has grown from a 16bed residence with 18 members of staff, to 22 bedrooms with 30 members of staff.

Wendy, a former RGN nurse, held a vision to create a care home that cared passionately about its residents and offer a ‘home from home’ and after purchasing the former stabling yard Colfox estate, her vision turned into a reality.

Coneygar Lodge has gained a solid reputation for providing ‘person centred care’ which is echoed in its ‘outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – the

highest accolade – in its most recent inspection.

In 2005, their son James joined as one of the directors and modernised the computer system to allow staff to spend more time with residents than on administration.

Drivers hit hard by fuel hikes Drivers filling up at Loders Garage in Dorchester were charged 176.9p per litre last week as fuel prices continue to rocket.

Meanwhile in Burton Bradstock during the same week, Texaco was charging 170.9p for diesel.

At the time of writing, RAC data showed the cost of a litre of unleaded was 153.50p, super unleaded 165.41 and diesel 157.47.

Average petrol prices have exceeded 150p per litre for the first time as the cost of oil continues to rise as Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine pushes the cost of fuel up worldwide. Russia is the world’s second-largest crude oil exporter behind Saudi Arabia.

Fears have been raised that Putin could respond to sanctions by restricting supplies.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “The question then becomes

where will this stop and how much can drivers take, just as many are using their cars more and returning to workplaces. If the oil price was to increase to 110 US dollars, there’s a very real danger the average price of petrol would hit £1.55 a litre.

“This would cause untold financial difficulties for many people who depend on their cars for getting to work and running their lives as it would skyrocket the cost of a full tank to £85. At 120 US dollars a barrel – without any change to the exchange rate which is currently at 1.35 US dollars – we would be looking £1.60 a litre and £88 for a full tank.”

Change thinking to help you change Hilary Charman is a hypnotherapist based at Partners in Wellbeing, Poundbury.

To make a positive change the first thing that you need to do is know what you want. The most important thing I teach my clients is that what you focus on is what you will get. I cannot stress this enough. Our sub-conscious cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is imagined, but it also doesn’t understand negatives.

So if you are constantly thinking I want to lose weight, I want to stop smoking, I don’t want to be poor, all you are doing is helping your sub-conscious to focus on weight,

smoking and poverty. And it will go to work to bring more of that into your life because it thinks that is what you want.

So you need to be very clear about what you want then train your brain to focus on it as often as you can. It will take a while to get used to doing it but eventually it will become a conscious habit to change those negative thoughts as they happen.

Let’s do an exercise to help you see what I mean.

All of my clients are familiar with doing their do wants/don’t wants.

Taught to me by my trainer Andrew Parr, author of the book The Real You, they are one of the most simple but powerful tools we use.

The Do Wants show us

what we should be focusing on and we can use them for visualisations and solution-based therapy.

The Don’t Wants can be used for analytical therapy.

So first of all write these things on a piece of paper, making sure you leave a few lines between each one.

Do Wants: Would Make Me Feel... Then I Could...

Don’t Wants: Makes Me Feel... Then I Can’t...

Now fill it in. For example if you wanted to lose weight you would not put lose weight under Do Wants.

We do not want to focus on weight. Instead we would put something like... To be healthy and slim, to like seeing photos of myself, To enjoy shopping for clothes.

Once you’ve done that think about how it will make you feel when you’ve achieved it.

And what you could do then that you can’t do now.

If you can’t think of your Do Wants start with the Don’t Wants and then write the opposite.

When you’ve got your Do Wants, really think about what it will be like to be like that.

Walking West Dorset FROME VALLEY I’ve decided to explore the Frome Valley and this is the first of a series of short walks based on the Frome Valley Trail which is marked by oddly shaped black arrows. It seems to coincide with part of the much longer Macmillan Way which has a lot more signs. Start at Evershot, where you can usually find somewhere to park in the village street near the church.

This walk doesn’t go too close to the river so you won’t need wellies although it’s rather muddy

near the farm yard. Walk up past the church, checking to see whether bees are flying from the gargoyle, then turn right along Back Lane. After a short distance you’ll find on your right an informative notice board next to a gushing spring

with retired Dorset rights of way officer Chris Slade

that is the source of the Frome.

Back Lane soon turns right and takes you downhill, eastward, past houses and an old chapel until, at the bottom you swing right to join the main street close to the Village Hall. Just beyond the Hall is a left turn that takes you past Stickland’s School. At the next bend, opposite Summer Lodge Hotel, is a gate into a field. Cross the field diagonally uphill to the far corner where there’s a gate. Follow the hedge line, enjoying the view across the valley to Frome St Quintin parish, the boundary of which runs

along the Frome.

Crossing another field you get to Fortunes Wood Farm where its muddy in places and there are electric fences to negotiate.

Continue south eastwards downhill across several fields until you’re getting close to Chantmarle. Turn right and follow the byway that weaves its way uphill to the road, Holway Lane, which takes you a couple of miles back to Evershot and your car.

Lens cap to scrum cap: Gill shooting

As people around the world celebrated International Woman’s Day on March 8, we raise a glass to a mum from Halstock who has been taking photographs for Sherborne RFC for more than a decade.

Gill Clark told The West Dorset Magazine how she took up rugby photography as a means of ‘saving my son’s embarrassment’ during his matches all those years ago.

Her sons Luke, 31, and Edward, 28, joined the junior teams of Sherborne RFC as children more than 20 years ago and both progressed into the senior ranks.

Gill first picked up a camera following pleas from her Luke, who played full back for Sherborne Firsts, to be less vocal while he was in action.

“I took up rugby photography because Luke complained about me shouting, hollering and cheering when he was playing,” said Gill. “I discovered I understood enough of the game to take good pics and, importantly, I couldn’t take photos and scream at the same time!”

Gill was delighted and set about teaching herself the tricky art of sport photography at club matches and, when at home, began honing her skills with landscapes and

nature.

Gill prides herself on being able to spot a great photo opportunity and when it comes to rugby photography, she attributes this skill to her understanding of the game.

“I don’t just point and press or take loads of pictures and hope I get a

good one,” said Gill.

“I like to think that I can read the game pretty well and I often know what’s going to happen next. I think that if a number eight

is likely to peel off the back of a scrum, my camera is fixed on the number eight waiting for the right shot.

“There might be

photographers out there with much better equipment than me. My sons bought me my first Canon and I’ve never invested in anything else.”

The family have a long association with the club, following their move to Dorset from Berkshire in 1994. Along with rugby,

they excelled at other sports. Both boys played county cricket for Dorset, and Luke had trials with Somerset Under-17s Rugby and more recently has excelled on the golf course.

Edward played football and hockey at school and lacrosse at Liverpool University.

Gill’s husband, Andy, also has an excellent rugby pedigree. He managed the Sherborne Colts for many years, many of whom now play for Sherborne Firsts.

Andy also helped to develop Sherborne’s trio of current Premiership stars, Ollie Deveto of Exeter Chiefs, Northampton Saints’ Tom James and Tom Lawday, who plays for Harlequins.

Gill combines her passion for rugby and photography with her role as team leader in the vaccination programme. She is also first responder in the small team covering Corscombe and Halstock.

Gill loves taking pictures on the pitch and has no plans to stop snapping the action, and now Luke has hung up his rugby boots, taking team pictures might become a little easier.

Gill said: “If I ever tried to get the team together between the posts for a photo, they would all be up for it – apart from Luke.

I’ve never taken any money for my work, but always suggest donations to the club if people want to pay for one of my photographs.

“I love what I do, and I love our club.”

Spot-on Dan bags a point for Bees Bridport FC Brislington

A late Dan Baggs’penalty earned the Bees a deserved point against Brislington, the substitute smashing the ball home from 12 yards after Callum Arnold had been brought down by opposition goalkeeper, George Dorrington.

Bridport’s players and fans wildly celebrated their first draw of a troubled season, which followed another gutsy, moraleboosting performance from Shaun Annetts’ team.

The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges in very blustery conditions at St Mary’s Field, and Josh Lucas in the Bees’ goal had to be alert to tip over Ashley Kington’s swirling effort from outside the box.

The home side weathered the early storm and slowly became more of an attacking force, and it was the Bees who took the lead on the half-hour mark,

before the interval, when Joe McLennan fired in an equaliser from the edge of the box, via the inside of the post.

Normal service looked like it had resumed when the visitors took the lead

on 59 minutes with McLennan adding his second with a curling, long-range effort which gave Lucas no chance.

But to their credit, the Bees did not allow their heads to drop, and although visiting defender Scott Lewis’ bullet header was just inches away from putting the game beyond doubt, they held on to give Baggs the chance to snatch a dramatic late point.

Organisers said: “The terrain is typical of West Dorset, with hills and some steep climbs but the most incredible views to see when you reach the top.”

With something for everyone, the organisers hope that the Wild West Dorset will appeal to families, with

free entry offered to under 12s taking part in the 5k trail.

The course will be well-marshalled and there will be fuel stations at intervals en route. Finishers can look forward to a complimentary beer or soft drink, together with a unique finisher medal. A variety of wellearned local refreshments will await at journey’s end.

ALL KICKING OFF: Maiden Newton’s youth football teams are looking for new pitches following the club’s expansion

Maiden Newton Youth Football Club has issued an impassioned plea for more playing fields as they are rapidly outgrowing their facilities following a sharp increase in budding young talent.

The club is a well-run and progressive community club and their numbers have swelled to more than 100 members, but now members of the committee are concerned they may have to start turning children away unless they can secure more pitches.

Maiden Newton Youth FC started 14 years ago, and has grown to six teams playing weekly in the Dorset Leagues.

And next season the club is set to expand to eight teams, with the launch of Under 6s and Under 9s girls’ teams.

field, as well as the use of Greenford Primary School’s field for five-aside games.

The club have also forged strong links with the local

senior team, Maiden Newton & Cattistock, who have allowed the youngsters to use their Cattistock pitch for Under 13 matches.

However with the senior team now playing first and reserve team matches, the pitch is struggling to cope with the increased footfall, particularly in the wet, winter months.

Vice-chairman Steven May said: “The club consistently provides development in the sport, in an enjoyable and fun way. We’d like to

continue for many years to come and, to do so, access to further local playing facilities is paramount. !In three years’ time, we hope to be able to field four teams playing 11-aside matches, but will only be able to meet this goal if pitches can be found.”

Steven hopes more youngsters will go on to play in the senior ranks at Maiden Newton & Cattistock, now that there is a clear pathway for talented local footballers.

A first-half brace from prolific striker Alex Murphy was enough to secure another three precious points for the title-chasing Zebras, extending their winning streak to a remarkable 13 league outings, and enabling them to open up a 10-point gap at the top of the table.

Town celebrated winning their second consecutive Toolstation Division One Team of the Month award, and continued their relentless charge towards promotion, with a comfortable win against struggling Bishops Lydeard.

Closest challengers Warminster Town slipped to an unexpected defeat at AEK Boco, and although the chasing pack all have games in hand, the Zebras’ destiny is now firmly in their own hands.

The Zebras had to overcome a late Wells City rally to secure the three points, with Alex Murphy’s second of the afternoon finally settling matters at the Athletic Ground.

Town were at their fluent best during the opening half and goals from Declan Cornish, Murphy, and Ash Guppy looked to have made the win a formality,

but second-half complacency allowed Wells back into the game and the home side responded with two goals to make for a nervy finish.

Town’s first-half showing was certainly impressive, and Cornish opened the visitors’ account with a crisp strike from 12 yards following good work from Ant Herrin and Murphy.

Herrin and Ollie Hebbard had chances to increase the Zebras’ lead as the visitors continued to dominate, before they duly doubled their advantage on 34 minutes courtesy of Murphy’s fine curling strike from 25 yards - his 22nd goal of the season.

We are all dust... but life is precious

This week we have stepped into the season of Lent, a time of penitence, when we are encouraged to look at our lives, and consider how we might live more generously.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent. And in many churches on that day we did that strange thing of putting ash on our heads, as a sign of our mortality.

This year it felt to me like more people wanted to gather and have a cross of ash smudged on their foreheads.

More were drawn to come together, almost as if the terror of war in Ukraine and the slow emergence from the pandemic made those big questions of life and death feel very close.

With Spectam Scour Halt supply issues, I thought it would be helpful to consider more about Watery Mouth control for 2022.

Spectam Scour Halt has now been discontinued and Synergy Farm Health has no licensed products available for the prevention of Watery Mouth in lambs. We asked our flocks to evaluate their other prevention strategies ahead of lambing this year.

We recommend you speak with your own veterinary practice, to discuss their strategy.

What do we know about Watery Mouth?

Watery Mouth is a bacterial infection caused by E.coli and other similar bacteria that release toxins in the lamb’s gut and cause the clinical signs we see: salivation, reduced gut movement, collapse and death. Hygiene is the key to keep lambs safe environment, so hygiene is key. Remember, as well as deep, clean straw beds in the lambing and individual pens, consider the cleanliness of the passageway a lamb is put in whilst waiting for a pen or quadbike trailer for our outdoor lambers. They are babies after all, and we need to think about their hygiene in those terms.

Colostrum is essential in combating the bacteria that cause watery mouth and inadequate colostrum intake is another key risk factor.

Both the quantity and

quality of the colostrum a lamb receives is important.

The rule of thumb we work by is that a lamb (or calf for that matter) should receive 20% of bodyweight in the first 24 hours of life; half of which they should receive in the first 6 hours. For an average 4kg lamb that’s 800ml of colostrum in the first 24 hours, 400ml in the first six hours. Close supervision of ewe and lamb to observe effective suckling is a great place to start.

For high-risk lambs (triplets, small or weak

lambs, lambs of sick or thin mothers) that need colostrum supplementation, consider the source of that colostrum. Ewe colostrum is best (we can test the quality using a Brix Refractometer – check out our “Winter Sheep News” on our website for information); where ewe’s milk is not available consider cow’s colostrum (tested for Johnes, BVD and anti-sheep antibodies) or synthetic supplements. However, be aware not all colostrum supplements are considered equal. We would always recommend getting forage analysed and a pre-lambing diet formulated as a great place to start to optimise ewe colostrum. Your vet would help you with this.

Plan to create new nature reserve

More than 800 trees will be planted to create a new nature reserve in the heart of Dorset.

Non-profit company 9Trees CIC is working with a farmer to convert the five-acre site near Fifehead Neville.

Agriculture Mud-phobic Tria Stebbing lives on the outskirts of Sherborne with her farmer partner and two dogs in a converted stable. She keeps sheep, both stock sheep and pedigree rare breed sheep. She is working on her first book, in between working in a village school to pay the vet’s bills.

With just six weeks to go we were finally able to navigate the trailer across the muddy field to pick up the flock and take them back to our own field in readiness for lambing.

The stock trailer is small and usually meets our needs, this time however, the ladies are carrying multiple lambs and are already on the large side.

Luckily for us they are used to paddock hopping and loading them onto the trailer is stress free, usually the whiff of a ginger biscuit is enough to get them moving. What we had not foreseen this time was the sheer volume of pregnant ewes that needed transporting, and it was certainly a bit of a squeeze. Movement papers completed we set off for the field, a short journey down some

The previous day we had been over and put up the electric fence as we plan to strip graze and manage the available grass as best as we can. they have been back to the field three years running now to lamb and as we pulled up and opened the back of the trailer, they paused, and you could almost see them thinking ‘now it all makes sense’.

The mud has resumed its relentless takeover and the waterproof over trousers have become the go to item in my wardrobe once again. I have also packed my lambing bag of essential things to have with me. A curious assortment of things,

Iodine for navel dipping, disposable gloves and lubricant, replacement colostrum and feeding tube, disinfectant, bale twine (multiple uses) a small dog coat and so it goes on. My own bag contains a bottle of water, a large bar of chocolate, woolly hat, bale twine, anti bac wipes and extra phone charge, it pays to get organised before you become sleep deprived during lambing, each year something new is added to the bag.

The ewes are checked on at regular intervals both by us and the villagers, who love having them back. Feeding has been increased and as mentioned previously we are on the look out for Twin lamb disease, when the growing lambs take out too much from the ewe and their own health starts to decline. The next job is to organise the pens into a functioning maternity unit, brush off the heat lamps and keep everything crossed for some warm sunshine. We can only hope.

NFU’s £25,000 support for Ukraine’s farmers The NFU is sending solidarity to Ukranian farmers and has donated £25,000 to the Disasters Emergency Committee for its humanitarian appeal.

NFU President Minette Batters said: “Like everyone watching in absolute horror as the people of Ukraine are bombed, homes are destroyed, and families are torn apart by a war we thought we’d never see again in Europe, we want to do everything we can to help, to show support and solidarity with those affected.

“I know many farmers want

to do all they can to help.

They have friends and coworkers in Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian families here working on farms. This war is creating a humanitarian disaster, the impacts of which will be felt by us all.

“Those families fleeing, as well as those staying to fight to defend their country, will be facing unimaginable challenges, and I hope our donation to the DEC Appeal goes some way to showing our support at this truly terrible time.”

Tell your daughters: Farming is not just for old men

Rachel Hayball is a married mum of six from Beaminster.

She is a herdsperson and has a small flock of sheep and sells lamb.

If you Google the word farmer and look at the image results you will see lots of images of men. If you ask someone to describe what a farmer looks like they will often describe an older male.

Neither of those things are surprising as at the end of the day the majority of farmers in the UK are men and the average age of a farmer in the UK is 59.

Women are often seen as good calf rearers and carers of orphan lambs. Women have often found themselves doing the farm books, whilst being great suppliers of mugs of tea and slices of cake for the hard working men out on the farm, however things are changing.

The number of Women in agriculture is increasing.

More Women are farmers in their own right then ever before. There are more female farm workers, tractor drivers and farm managers then before, and we are finally being seen as equals on the farm, and yes, we are great at it!

So, if you are a young girl reading this column with an

interest in farming then this message is for you. I was told as a teenager that I shouldn’t go into farming. I was discouraged from studying agriculture and even my school careers advisor told me that farming is for men.

All of those people were wrong. Farming is what I am good at. Its my passion, my first love and its my lifealongside my family of course.

If you want to farm then go out and grab it! Study agriculture, gain some experience on farms and get talking to other female farmers. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t or shouldn’t farm. You have as much potential as anyone else, and yes you can farm and have a family.

More and more agricultural employers are recognising the importance of a work life balance and are happy for women to do shifts that fit

around their children or job share. My employer is

fantastic and has no problem with me leaving the farm to pick up a poorly child from school, or swapping around my days off so that I am home for my children’s birthdays.

British farming needs us women. It needs us out caring for livestock, driving tractors and managing farms. It also needs women who want to be that amazing farmers wife who keeps the books balanced, calves fed and husband supported.

Whatever role you want, is there for the taking. All you need is a bit of passion and some determination, oh and the ability to ignore those who say you can’t do it.

Because you can.
