n A nest box at Purcombe Farm in Bridport is now home to a brood of five kestrels.

Ellen Kingston, from the Coppet Hill farm, put the box up last year but it remained dormant.

However she got into a flutter in May when she noticed a female kestrel sitting outside the box.

Ellen popped the camera inside and to her delight saw five eggs, which have all successfully hatched and the fledglings are being fed daily by both parents.

Confusion over boundary changes

The Boundary Commission has made its final recommendations on constituency borders in West, South and North Dorset – with some rather perplexing changes.

The moves are aimed at equalising the number of voters in each constituency.

But rather than moving borders based on geography, it seems the commission has made its decisions based on council wards.

Sherborne, in the north of West Dorset, remains in West Dorset, while the villages of Tolpuddle and Puddletown, to the south of the constituency, are being handed to MP Simon Hoare in North Dorset.

However Cerne Valley and Piddle Valley, to the north of the Puddles, which had also been earmarked for Mr Hoare’s patch, will remain in West Dorset.

Chickerell, which has long been an anomaly, with a Weymouth address but residing in West Dorset, will be handed to Richard Drax in

South Dorset. But Upwey and Broadwey, which had been pencilled in to move to West Dorset, will stay in South Dorset.

The changes have resulted in very wiggly lines between the constituencies, likely to give voters a bit of a headache as they try to

pinpoint who their current MP is.

And the decision has baffled those in Tolpuddle and Puddletown.

Charlotte Park said: “I live in North Dorset. Honestly it’s not a bad thing. But the boundaries will be very confusing. My parents live in Puddletown. I live 20 miles away.”

Mike Crankshaw said: “Beggars belief – what these muppets will think up next? I can get to the coast from Puddletown in 15-20 minutes, yet it takes nearly 50 minutes to get to Shaftsbury, which is actually in North Dorset!! I despair!!”

Penny Ruddock said: “We are NOT, nor have we ever been part of north Dorset, and why these two villages?

Both of them are south of the A35 and everything else is north of it.”

West Dorset MP Chris Loder said: “I am satisfied with the outcome of the Boundary Commission’s Final Recommendations.

“What was initially proposed late last year would have substantially changed the character of West Dorset. I am glad that the Boundary Commission listened to the hundreds of constituents who submitted their feedback, and to myself and Richard Drax MP who wrote a joint letter in opposition to the proposals.”

North Dorset MP Simon Hoare said: “I welcome and support the current proposals for the North Dorset Constituency. It is a great relief that the Dorset Council area has retained four parliamentary seats. The removal of a split ward is also sensible. In short the proposals put forward by the Commission look and feel right and sensible.”

Charminster First School’s family fun day returns for a sixth year 12pm-5pm – and it will be an even bigger, more elaborate, fun day than ever before.

Live music from Nathan Jon-Snell and Koast, dance shows, a forest school area where you can toast marshmallows on the open fire, make clay models and decorate your own pebbles to take home.

There will be a fire engine, miniature traction engine, digger and mini tractor on site and an animal area with Burmese pythons, corn snakes, a sand boa, a bluetongued skink, a bearded dragon, iguanas and a tortoise, along with goats.

There will also be bungee trampolines, an inflatable slide and bouncy castle, plus lots of stalls from crafts and photography to wildlife and games.

There will be a bar, refreshments, food and ice cream plus a raffle to win a TV, pressure washer, family tickets to attractions and a host of other prizes.

Tribute to the stars Dorchester’s Brewery Square is set to host a summer full of free musical performances by a range of tribute acts, kicking off on Saturday, July 22.

The line-up includes Elton John impersonator Martin Cox, whose one-man-band, Absolutely Elton takes audiences through the biggest hits of Elton’s 60year career, with melodic piano performances.

Queen tribute act, Flash, is A Coffee Morning and Tower Tours will be held at All Saints’ church, Wyke Regis from 10am to midday.

(and where’s it Friday, August 4 The sixth annual Duckfest – a family music festival raising funds for Ducks & Drakes Cancer Trust – will be held today and Saturday, August 5 at Hintock Farm, Charminster, DT2 7SG. You can camp for the weekend, or buy day tickets and enjoy a range of brilliant bands from rock to folk.

The trust was founded to create awareness of bowel cancer symptoms in young people, aged 18 to 30, to support bowel cancer patients and their families through the provision of specialist equipment and financial aid and to fund specialist nurses & support local cancer care organisations.

Ducks and Drakes Cancer Trust is based in Dorset and was founded by Andrew Drake and his family following his bowel cancer diagnosis aged 24.

Estate regeneration gets green light

A scheme to regenerate St Michael’s Trading Estate in Bridport, a plan which has been on the table for almost two decades, has finally been approved.

The plan to demolish some old industrial units, refurbish others and build a mixture of new housing and conversions, has been a hot topic in the town since the scheme was first dreamed up in 2007.

And now the development to build 83 new homes, of which 14 are ‘affordable’, with the potential to create 100 new jobs has been given the green light.

And while the amount of industrial and commercial space will be reduced, planners at Dorset Council last week also agreed a scheme to extend Lilliput

Buildings, in the north-east corner of the estate, to create six commercial units on the ground floor and build nine homes.

At the meeting, St Michael’s Trading Estate manager Martin Ridley of Hayward & Co, said: “As estate manager at St Michael’s, you might expect a biased view from

me but my comments are based on many years’ experience. They also represent the views of Norman Hayward, sole owner of the estate and therefore the applicant.

“The development and regeneration of St Michael’s has become a hot topic over the lifetime of this application with conflicting views and opinions – a healthy debate for some, a frustrating and negative delay for others, us included.

“However, there is one aspect on which all parties agree: St Michael’s is not sustainable in its present form.

Nobody likes to think about getting old, but it is certainly worth thinking about if you value your home. That is because your house could very well be sold by the local council to pay for your care fees.

As an example, let’s say you own a home jointly with your partner and you live there until one of you dies. The surviving partner continues to live in the house until they must go into a care home run by the local authority. At that point, the local authority will assess the surviving partner for care fees. If their capital and savings are worth more than £23,250, they will have to fund their own care.

Councils place a charge on the property, which is paid

when the house is sold.

Alternatively, you may be required to sell the house immediately to raise the cash. Money raised from the sale of the house will fund your care until your savings get down to £23,250.

There are two potential solutions to the problem available to you. One is a will trust which protects 50% of the value of your home from care costs. College launching new degree level courses Kingston Maurward College is launching new degree level courses in its new university centre from September.

The Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) in equine, animal welfare & science, and agriculture are two-year courses, equivalent to a foundation

degree, and are available to do full- or part-time.

The courses allow progression to full BSc degree programmes, some of which are delivered at the university centre, including Animal Welfare & Science, and Marine Ecology & Conservation.

Park revamp A £1m revamp of Radipole Park & Gardens is set to feature a new refreshment kiosk, play area, sensory garden, and toilet facilities.

Weymouth Town Council, working with the Friends of Radipole Park & Gardens, secured the cash from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Landslip repair work to delay traffic Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys after work began to repair a landslip on the A35 west of Chideock.

National Highways contractors began £2million-worth of excavation and stabilisation work at the site on July 3.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “To enable the complex operation, the westbound climbing lane at Chideock

Hill will be removed, with the eastbound lane utilised for construction traffic and access and the other two lanes remaining for eastbound and westbound traffic.

“To enable the work to start promptly on Monday, traffic management will be installed under the scheduled overnight maintenance closure of the A35 between Axminster and Bridport, from 8pm to 6am.”

The works are set to take five months to complete and will be carried out by South West Highways, Balfour Beatty and other sub-contractors.

National Highways service manager Stephen Potts said: “We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating but we need to carry out this work to ensure the long-term integrity of this section of the A35.

“This time of year provides

the best conditions for building earthworks and ground conditions are optimum now.

Unity protest over barge for refugees With news of the imminent arrival of the controversial refugee barge to Portland, Stand Up to Racism Dorset has called a Unity Demonstration to counter division and hatred being stirred up by some in the area.

Concern for West Bay traders after

Traders in West Bay say they are suffering badly after parking soared from £2 a day to £15.

The little seaside community, where shops are mainly small independent traders, used to be a magnet for day trippers, who would stay all day, buying from the shops and taking their time at eateries.

Now, Dorset Council has hiked the rate by 750 per cent, to bring West Bay into line with other seaside towns.

Anna Powell, director of Sladers Yard, said: “The hike in parking fees has certainly affected the length of time people spend in

West Bay. “Too often, I hear people saying they would stay for lunch but their parking is about to run out. It is when people stay for lunch that they really enjoy Sladers Yard and quite often decide

to buy a piece of artwork so this is doubly damaging for us.

“The additional change of putting so many spaces for camper vans in the prime short-stay carpark opposite Haddon House Hotel has

also affected all the businesses on West Bay Road/George Street.

“These spaces are very often empty when there are nowhere left for cars to park in West Bay.” Town clerk Will Austin said there’s still parking for £2 all day at Bridport Football Club, from where people can either walk to West Bay or take a bus.

He added: “West Bay is still an absolute ‘must’ as a day out in Dorset. As well as the beach, we offer stunning Jurassic Coast views, attractions like West Bay Discovery Centre/Customs House/children’s rides, fabulous eateries, events, independent shops, summer evening markets, boat trips, paddle boarding, rowing, fossil hunting, and a

“If you’re stuck having to pay £15 for a day out in Dorset, West Bay brings together everything that other coastal areas – where you pay the same fee – can only offer in part. Why on earth would anyone in their right mind go anywhere else, when you also get the bonus of the best market town centre offer in the county (I’d argue the best in the UK!)?”

Various people have suggested that the extra money generated by parking should go towards improving the toilets in West Bay. One said: “I doubt the council will reduce charges, but if they could advertise what the extra money is going towards then that may

help. If there could be pressure to get them to allocate the money taken in West Bay to go back to West Bay then I think that would be so much better.

“If the council could promise to re-do the beach toilets with the extra money then I am sure some people will feel less angry about the parking. Surely the

income generated by an area should go to improve that area.

“The public toilets by the beach are just embarrassing, especially from the view of a parent with a young family. They are just disgusting.”

Commenting on Facebook, one lady said: “I paid £4.50 to park just for a 90 minute health appointment last week. It does seem excruciatingly high.”

But another said: “These prices are nothing compared to places like Bournemouth or where I come from.”

Another pointed out the differences between West Bay and Bournemouth, saying: “All we have is a beach and food…”

Dorset Council were asked to comment.

Dorset Council’s Executive Director for Children’s Services, Theresa Leavy, has been named as the Municipal Journal’s (MJ) Corporate Director of the Year.

Dorset Council is appealing for help to identify young carers, so they can be offered extra help and support.

Young people aged 18 or under who care for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, mental health problems or an addiction, cannot cope without their support account for 1.2% of the 5–17-year-old population – about 590 children and young people in Dorset.

However, only 285 young carers are registered in the county.

A spokesman for the council said: “Young carers are more likely to suffer with poor physical and mental health. They can also find it difficult to fully participate in their education, finding time for homework and revision difficult. Recognising young carers remains a high priority for the council.”

County town toppled from first-time pass spot Dorchester has fallen off the top spot as the UK town with the highest pass rate among people taking their driving test for the first time. A

DVLA data shows Lee on Solent in Hampshire now has the highest firsttime pass rate for drivers in the UK. In order, the towns with the highest

first-time pass rates are Lee on Solent with 67.1 per cent, Chichester with 66.5 per cent and Dorchester with 65 per cent.

What a hoot! Barn owl back with its dinner This pair of barn owls are nesting in a barn in the depths of West Dorset.

Paul Coggins’ photograph was taken at dusk one evening. The barn owl’s habitat comprises of field edges, the edges of watercourses,

and grass strips alongside woods provide ideal hunting habitat for barn owls.

The barn owl population decline is largely a result of reduced food supply, with fewer areas of rough

grassland available for hunting.

The barn owl is becoming much less common generally - and in some places, rare, with between 4,000-5,000 pairs of barn owls living in the British Isles.

760-home estate finally given go-ahead A new housing estate of nearly 800 homes in Bridport has finally been signed off, on the understanding that three ponds, or ‘basins’ designed to cope with excess rainfall will be made safer.

Foundry Lea on the edge of Bridport will comprise of 760 homes over 430,000 sqm.

Nearly half will be ‘affordable’ and of those, 186 are due to be rented.

Foundry Lea’s website says: “Embodying principles of quality, community and connection with the environment, Foundry Lea will celebrate its landscape setting and

promote happy, healthy and sustainable living.”

However the plans have been fraught with controversy from the outset, with a welter of objections from numerous groups, who say that the town doesn’t have the required infrastructure for so many extra people and that the development will

be prone to flood, as well as causing new hazards for traffic.

Last year important hedgerows were destroyed by contractors at the site, leading to builders The Consortium of Barratt David Wilson and Vistry Group making hasty amends and fulsome apologies.

The estate, for which outline plans were approved in 2019, is due to spring up over the next six years.

Planners gave the overall plans the nod last year, but the features planned to cope with excess water at the site weren’t deemed

acceptable.

Now three ‘basins’ have been agreed with the Environment Agency in case of heavy rainfall.

Bridport councillor Kelvin Clayton said: “I personally have many reservations – not least being the extra sewage (from 2,000+ extra people) that will need to be processed by the existing sewage system, and a health service that will need to care for the same extra population.”

Planning officers are now expected to ensure the basins are fenced or landscaped to dissuade children from playing near them.

Revamped Martyrs ready to reopen

Tolpuddle’s historic Martyrs Inn is opening this weekend – after 196 shareholders raised nearly half a million pounds to rescue it.

The pub was closed in February 2020 and was expected to open again, once the pandemic had diminished.

However that didn’t happen, and villagers had to wait two-and-a half years for it to come back to life.

In December last year, villager Barrie Lovelock decided enough was enough and galvanised the village into action, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds in pledges in just a month, and starting work on the place a short while

later. Now the pub is ready to reveal its dramatic makeover, with a dark green ‘gentleman’s club’ style ambiance and all new kitchen fixtures and fittings ready to cook up a storm.

Food will be available from the get-go on Saturday, July 8 and feature pizzas from an industrial-sized Italian oven, paninis, fish and

chips and good value, well cooked pub grub that promises to be lower priced than many similar pubs.

Barrie said: “Daunting as it first appeared, it got worse and worse and the more we touched the more we had to do. But now we are well on top of it, we’re on the home run and it’s turned out better than we’d

hoped.”

All 196 shareholders have been invited to a ‘soft’ launch on Friday, July 7, before the inn officially opens on Saturday. Then, the week after the village will be filled to the gills with trades unionists for Martyrs weekend, which should test the new pub’s mettle, and there’s an official opening celebration that weekend too, on Saturday, July 15.

Barrie said “It’s gone wonderfully well. We were about a week behind as we had to throw the whole kitchen out and get rid of everything. We had to buy all new – fridges, freezer, pizza oven, steamer – we have gadgets coming out of our ears.” n Find the Martyrs Inn at DT2 7ES.

MP welcomes Rural Opportunities initiatives

Chris Loder, MP for West Dorset, has welcomed the Government’s publication of Unleashing Rural Opportunities – a set of initiatives designed to support housing and energy, connectivity and transport, communities, and economic growth across rural communities in England.

Initiatives include investment of £110 million as part of the Rural England Prosperity Fund to provide capital grants to rural businesses; £7 million to test new ways to bring together satellite,

wireless and fixed line internet connectivity to blackspots; £2.5 million specifically to boost the supply of new affordable housing in rural areas; and an increase in the number of doctors in underserved area through the Targeted Enhanced Recruitment Scheme.

Speaking about the initiatives, Chris Loder MP said: “These initiatives are a step in the right direction towards addressing the disparities that exist between rural and urban areas.”

“As part of the initiatives, the Government is committed to investing £5 billion through its Project Gigabit programme. Over 1.5 million premises will have access to gigabit broadband by December 2025, and all regional contracts in England will be announced by the end of 2024. The Government has also invested over £1 billion, jointly with industry, in the Shared Rural Network to improve 4G mobile coverage throughout the UK.”

Born to rewild: Why Mapperton is

Viscountess… TV presenter… yoga and health guru… mum of four… Just reading all that makes me tired – and in need of one of Julie Montagu’s smoothies.

The American entrepreneur fizzes with energy, spinning a multitude of plates in the air with a beaming smile.

Far from being a stuffy, titled lady of the manor she is engaging, humorous and down to earth. This sunny, engaging nature has drawn 175,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel, where she visits historic homes and explores their pasts, and led her to present on the BBC, ITV, Sky and more as a royal commentator.

When several of those plates had to be put on pause during the pandemic, she picked up several new plates – and one of those was the lush Mapperton Estate near Beaminster, the ancestral home of her husband Luke’s family.

Covid, it seems, did our patch of the planet a real service as since, Julie and Luke have thrown themselves into creating a legacy. Instead of plodding along, merely serving up cream teas and sandwiches (and why not, as Luke is descended from the originator of our favourite lunch, the Earl of Sandwich), the pair are transforming the estate into something of vitality and life.

‘museum’ style historic estates, where sprawling country homes stay frozen in time, Julie, 50, and Luke, 53, have embraced the concept of rewilding, turning acres of land over to wildlife. So far, over 450 acres at the 2,000-acre estate has been rewilded and they plan to

rewild 1,000 altogether.

“The point is with rewilding is that there should be an abundance of wildlife,” Julie says.

This bringing to life of a formerly fairly traditional stately home is accompanied by a new family-friendly focus. As a mum of four, albeit older children, Julie felt their rewilding efforts should be enjoyed by the very generation who stood to gain the most from it.

So she has set about installing play equipment there, with a new area for under-fives built from wood from the estate,

Julie said: “We are in the AONB here and also SSSIs. We want to teach children about nature recovery. We want families to come and enjoy the outdoor space, to experience nature where it’s not perfectly groomed – though we do also have formal gardens.”

Further plans include a camping and glamping area next summer, with shepherds’ huts, and family events. A Christmas fair held at the estate for the last two

years has grown enormously, with 2,000 visitors enjoying scores of stalls, with Father Christmas in attendance.

The main house is Tudor, while the small church at Mapperton is mediaeval.

A coach house has been turned into a restaurant, with artisan local crafts for sale and there are plans to create an exhibition space in an old stable.

The estate’s twice-yearly specialist plant sales are continuing, and every Friday there’s yoga there too. Children’s activities are being planned over the summer, and there’s a meet the keeper session around noon every Monday, for those who wish to quiz Percy the Tortoise’s caretaker.

Before a complete ban on the sale of peat-based composts comes into force in England next year, Groves Nursery and Garden Centre has launched its own 100 per cent peat-free, multi-purpose compost.

Created from a unique combination of Forest Gold wood fibre, composted bark, and clay, Groves’ multi-purpose compost is described by them as a ‘proven all-rounder’.

Garden centre managing director Charlie Groves said: ‘I’m proud to say we’re now 100 per cent peat free here at Groves.

“We’ve tested and tested it in our own nurseries to get the formula just right. We

were finding other peat-free composts were drying out too quickly so the added wetting agent in ours has been a real game changer.

“Our compost is freedraining, but still holds onto moisture as a result. The bark provides excellent aeration and drainage and we’ve added essential nutrients to last for three months.”

For those gardeners who have found going peat free frustrating, Mr Groves had the following advice: “Going peat free has been a learning curve for us all.

“We’ve found the key is to water slightly more frequently and to feed more frequently too.”

County show backing DCH charity Dorset County Show has chosen Dorset County Hospital Charity as its charity of the year.

The hospital is planning to build a new Emergency Department (ED) and Critical Care Unit on the site of the former Damers First School and is running a £2.5million capital appeal to fund enhancements to them.

Show chairman Nicki Ralph said she knows all too well how vital the hospital’s critical care services are after her farmer husband Nic was admitted last year with total kidney failure and sepsis.

Take the lead on dog restriction law Dog restrictions are the subject of a consultation by Dorset Council to identify where and when they should have access to green spaces and beaches.

The Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) has been in place since January 2021 and will expire at the end of the year.

Now people, residents, business owners, organisations, and visitors, can have their say on where and when there should be restrictions on dogs in public places, covering topics such as fouling and lead length.

“Most of the 664 affordable homes receive financial support from Homes England and are built by housing associations, such as Magna, Abri, Sovereign, Aster, East Boro, Stonewater and Hastoe. Some of the properties are where the council has used grants and capital resources to acquire and bring empty properties back to use, while community groups have also come together to form Community Land Trusts, working with registered providers to provide affordable homes for local residents in villages, such as Drimpton.”

A unique village famous worldwide Steeped in history and pretty as a picture, Abbotsbury is a haven for its residents and a thriving hub for artisan businesses.

Famed worldwide for its subtropical gardens and swannery, the village inspired author Ian McEwan to write On Chesil Beach, while director Thomas Vinterberg used it as a filming location for his adaptation of Far from the Madding Crowd.

And while the pace of life in the village may feel somewhat dreamlike – lending itself well to tales of romance and beauty – Ilchester Estate is a workhorse that provides a home to a truly eclectic mix of businesses to this day.

Martin Alderman, general manager for Abbotsbury Tourism, said: “It definitely feels like Abbotsbury is becoming a destination, and

the village and attractions work well together to welcome tourists and local visitors.

“The subtropical gardens are world-renowned, and the Swannery is such an amazing place, they are special unique businesses we are lucky to have at either end of the village. As a place of business, there is no more beautiful a setting than Abbotsbury and the Jurassic coast.”

The subtropical gardens will host a family-friendly, openair performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Sunday, July 30 at 3pm, and a plant sale on Sunday, September 10.

If you’re visiting the village this summer, it’s certainly worth a visit to the Ilchester Estate to peruse the other businesses that call the village home.

The pair have been busy renovating the premises to bring the 100-year-old business “into the 21st century” while maintaining what Cheryl called “that more traditional, almost retro look”.

Good causes win as Summerfest is a Weymouth SummerFest raised more than £23,000 for local good causes.

The one-day family fun festival was organised by Weymouth and Portland Round Table and ran at Redlands Leisure and Community Park last month.

Round Table members supported the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance after Round Tabler Grant Tewkesbury suffered a serious brain injury and required an airlift to Southampton Hospital.

Following months of rehabilitation, Grant was able to attend Summerfest as a guest of honour.

Beach toy library proving popular A popular beach toy library on Weymouth seafront has been expanded.

Litter Free Dorset has partnered with Weymouth Town Council and Weymouth and Portland Marine Litter Project to provide two more locations on the busy seafront allowing visitors to borrow and reuse toys for free, meaning visitors save money, help reduce waste and stop plastic entering our oceans.

The new toy libraries will be located at the slipway next the West Hills Donkeys and the slipway in front of Rossi’s Ices, in addition to the existing toy

library located on the slipway next to the beach office.

Most beach toys are made of plastic and it is estimated that over 80% end up in landfill, incineration or in our oceans. Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project currently picks up around 100kg of plastic waste every month – just from the coast around Weymouth and Chesil Beach.

To help reduce this, visitors can drop beach toys that have been left behind or that are broken into the toy libraries so they can be reused or recycled.

Burton Bradstock kids are respectful of rights UNICEF recognises Burton Bradstock Primary School as a Silver: Rights Aware School.

The award follows a

UNICEF assessment which revealed good progress towards embedding children’s rights in policy, practice and ethos.

Race from the Base boosts air ambulance funds

Hundreds of bike racers joined in Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance’s new ‘Race from the Base’ challenge last month.

Starting and ending at the ambulance’s Henstridge Airfield base, competitors raced on three routes of 30km, 60km and 100km.

The total amount raised from the event will be announced at a later date.

Aged 78, Kevon Rendell from Beaminster was the oldest

participant on the day, while 11year-old Annabel Hyland from Sherborne was the youngest.

Air ambulance fundraising manager Emma Jones said: “This was our first ever Race from the Base event and wow, what a truly fabulous day it was.

“The sun shone brightly, there was laughter and smiles everywhere and the courage and determination of the cyclists was inspiring for us all to see.

“It was so lovely to hear people say how brilliant the cycle routes were and how well the event was organised, so you won’t be surprised to know that we will be doing it all again next year.

“My thanks go to everyone who took part or supported the event and made it so special.”

The next event for the air ambulance is a 5K Twilight Shift at Henstridge Airfield on Saturday, September 23.

Civic honour for b-side arts festival In the build-up to its seventh annual event, internationally recognised arts festival b-side has won the inaugural Weymouth Civic Society Award for Arts and Culture.

The society bestowed the honour on b-side for its contribution to the arts and culture of Portland and Weymouth as it honours “buildings and projects that make a positive impact on the appearance and quality of the local environment”.

Civic society chair Keith Holdaway said: “b-side has been the outstanding local arts company for several years and is expanding its work and inclusivity. The festival has been

augmented by a series of exciting events that have been communicated in an engaging and lively style, which has brought contemporary arts into the lives of many.

“The winners of the new awards were all chosen for the outstanding way they engaged with local people, this is particularly important to make contemporary visual arts accessible to all.” b-side director Rocca Holly-Nambi said: “We are delighted to receive this award and be recognised

by Weymouth Civic Society. Together we are celebrating what community building and

contemporary art can do for the places we live, visit, and love. land protection as its major theme, the installation This Land focuses on two fragile and unique natural and built heritage sites that are identified as at risk – the last remaining area of original Portland landscape at Portland Bill and the ruins of the Tudor cottage, Brandy Row on the seafront at Chesil.

This year’s festival will take place on Portland from Thursday, September 7 to Sunday, September 10.

Disabled holidaymakers’ charity finds

Holidaymakers with disabilities have found a new and tranquil haven in West Dorset – and such is the magic of the place, supporters say some arrive not even speaking and leave ‘laughing and dancing’.

The Green Island Holiday Trust was formed in 1991, after Jo Davies, the owner of Green Island in Poole, opened it up to people with disabilities to enjoy a supported break away with a team of volunteer carers.

Jo, and fellow founder Peter Viney, are still trustees.

When she sold Green Island in 2005, the holidays moved to Holton Lee, a well-being centre set in 350 acres of tranquil countryside overlooking Poole Harbour.

Now the trust crosses Dorset to stay at one of the west of the county’s gems – the relatively new Wraxall Yard, near Cattistock.

The holidays, which cater for about 30 people with a whole range of disabilities a year, offering them subsidised weeks of great fun trips, entertainment and more, have been taken by people all over Dorset and Hampshire – but they are open to any adults with

a disability of any kind.

Green Island chair Debbie Dunford hopes their new venue will attract more people from the west of the county.

Wraxall Yard was established last year by farmer Nick Read, who wanted to create holiday accommodation where disabled people could stay comfortably, but that wasn’t institutionalised.

Debbie added: “We live like a family here. Every day we’ve had a trip out

somewhere. We were lucky in that this time we had enough volunteers.

“Our volunteers are asked to give us a day for training, then a week once a year. They don’t have to have experience of being a carer.”

Primary school pupils can get in the saddle and learn how to ride a bike thaks to a new countywide scheme.

Dorset Council is making 20 bicycles available to children who need to learn how to ride as part of the national Bikeability training programme.

The authority received £100,000 of funding from central government’s Active Travel Fund to provide the free training while the free bicycles were provided by the Bikeability Trust.

Instructors deliver lessons at schools and nominated centres, and participants will receive a certificate and badge for taking part.

It’s a wonderful world down on the farm Hundreds of people visited Denhay Farm, Broadoak for Open Farm Sunday.

The Marshwood Vale Farmers’ Cluster, Melplash Agricultural Society and team at Coppet Hill all helped show visitors what farmers do to grow food, care for livestock and manage the environment.

Families were taken on tours of the farm in tractors and trailers, stopping off at different points to learn about the crops that were growing, find out about the farm machinery that is used, see a newly born litter of saddleback pigs, get up close to a dairy cow,

County’s savings of £96m following unitary shake-up Dorset Council says it has saved £96 million since 2019, when the five former district and borough councils and the county council became one new unitary council.

The savings were achieved by bringing together similar services, reducing duplication and costs, increasing efficiency, and reducing the number of councillors and senior officer roles.

The council says the money has been “reinvested into essential frontline services, protecting them from cuts, and focussing on sustainable local services over the longer-term.

“This includes children’s social care, road maintenance, libraries, housing, planning and adult social services”.

The council’s transformation programme is credited with savings of £13.6 million over the last two years, with a further £17.4 million projected over the next three years.

As part of that programme a new care company was set up by Dorset Council in October, and adult care services were transferred from Tricuro to Care Dorset. It is also setting up ‘Family Hubs’ so people can access support from not only the council but partner services too.

Second site for SEN school approved The Department for Education has approved the establishment of a second site in Dorchester for the Arbour House special educational needs (SEN) school in Weymouth.

Education and social care provider Potens, which owns the school, has gained government approval to increase pupil numbers to 60 across both sites.

A spokesperson for Potens said the firm has completed a “careful restoration and modification” of Maen, a former residence off Culliford Road North in Dorchester, for its second location.

MP in talks over house-building pollution West Dorset MP Chris Loder recently attended a roundtable discussion on housebuilding pollution run-off at 10 Downing Street.

He was joined at the talk on “nutrient neutrality” by fellow MPs for constituencies in which Special Protection Areas (SPAs) are affected by nitrates and phosphates entering waterways.

Mr Loder attended because the rivers Frome and Piddle and their tributaries – which run through his West Dorset constituency – feed Poole Harbour, which is designated as an SPA. Mr Loder said: “I attended the roundtable to find solutions to unlock the issues we are facing with housing and planning.

“Since 2020, nutrient

neutrality has had an acute impact on our local planning system and developers, farmers and landowners.

“All parties are expected to mitigate, and ultimately neutralise, their emissions of nitrates and phosphates from entering Special Protection Areas. I think we need to strike a balance with all interested parties.”

He added: “A recent consultation inviting all local planning authorities

to comment on whether a Local Nutrient Mitigation Fund would unlock housing delivery in catchment areas is a step forward. “Additionally, a legislative solution to this matter lies with the return of the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill to Parliament, which I am continuing to push for.”

Mr Loder also met with John Halsall, chief operating officer of South West Water to discuss the

health of the River Lim and the redesignation of Church Beach as a bathing beach.

Mr Loder said: “Efforts to re-designate Church Beach are directly affected by the water quality of the River Lim, as the beach is adjacent to the mouth of the river.

“Operational improvements are scheduled for the coming months, and I will hold South West Water to account ensure that they actually deliver on their promises.”

Following the meeting, South West Water confirmed it will be applying to water regulator Ofwat in October to bring forward a £20million investment programme to clean up the River Lim.

Fears eased over pesticides on beach Sediment containing metals and pesticides deposited on Lyme Regis seafront poses “no risk to human health” according to Dorset Council.

The authority said a recent analysis of the deposits left behind after the annual dredging in March shows there is “nothing that could be a risk to human or marine life”.

Five sediment samples were taken and tested for metals, pesticides and polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons - chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil, and gasoline.

The samples were also tested for organotins, organic compounds

containing tin that are used as a pesticide.

A council spokesperson said: “The samples were tested for selected substances in a laboratory.

The substances that were tested for are often linked with dredging operations of this kind.

“The tests showed that all the substances tested for were well below the threshold level.

“This level is classified as the range where adverse reactions rarely occur. This shows that there is no risk to human health from the sediment taken from the harbours navigational channels to keep these routes operational.”

He added: “Some concerns were raised during the dredging about the colour of the dredged sand which was darker in colour. This is due to the lack of exposure to oxygen in the seabed sediment. Once exposed to the air it returns to its normal colour.

Dredging also causes the colour of the sea to change due to the disruption of the seabed with sand particles suspended in the water.

These particles can irritate swimmers’ skin, so swimmers were advised to avoid the area while the dredging was taking place.”

Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for highways, travel

and environment, Ray Brian, said: “It is good news that the analysis shows that there are no detrimental effects of the dredging on the quality of the beach material.”

Mark Roberts, chairman of the council’s harbours advisory committee, said: “This is great news for Lyme Regis, especially on the run up to summer. ” Lyme and Charmouth Cllr Belinda Baldwin said: “I’m particularly grateful the sediment testing was introduced as many people had expressed concerns about deposits on the beach and the quality of the sea water for swimmers during the dredging.”

Down to earth KIM BERLIN – A newcomer to the Rock

Wildflowers going wild on the island A wild walk on Portland at the moment will bring you a visual feast of wildflowers and butterflies.

Along the back of Chesil and Hamm Beach the thrift, or sea pink, Armeria maritima, that was in flower, rolling out the pink carpet for travellers on and off the island in May, has handed over its pre-eminence to the very rare calcareous grassland habitat at the top of the island, and the show has really got going! Great golden cloths of bird’s foot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus, kidney and horseshoe vetches cover vast areas, fixing nitrogen in the poor calcareous soil to the benefit of other plants that share this special space. Intrepid and knowledgeable botanists may even find the Portland Sea Lavender, Limonium recurvum ssp. portlandicum and Portland Hawkweed, Hieracium portlandicum, both unique to the Isle of Portland having evolved to adapt to the special conditions here.

Look closely and other wildflowers will meet your gaze. Tiny but colourful white and purple Eyebright, Euphrasia officinalis, so called because it was

traditionally used to treat eye disorders, the tiny round yellow flower balls of black medick, Medicago lupulina, hieraciums and wild marjoram, are woven together with many other species, including bee and pyramid orchids, to form a tapestry of wildflowers that has been described as one of the richest wildflower habitats in the British Isles.

food source are many animals, primarily the insects that pollinate and ensure the reproduction of the plantlife. Portland is home to more than half of the butterfly species that are known to live in the UK and at this time of year, the blue butterflies are commonly seen.

Adonis blues, small blues, common blues, holly blues, chalkhill blues, so many of them find the conditions here amongst the calcareous grassland and the bare rocky sides of disused quarry workings suitable for their habitat that, in a good year

you only have to walk through a wild area of the island, and the blue butterflies will be flying all around, along with many other species.

And yes, you guessed it, Portland has its own unique blue butterfly, the cretaceous silver studded blue, that lives only here, and a small colony on Purbeck.

Although not unique to this particular blue, some blue butterflies have an extraordinary life cycle.

The female lays her eggs near particular ants nests and the ants find the caterpillars when they hatch and carry them inside their colony. Here, the caterpillar rewards the ants for their protection by exuding sugars and amino acids that the ants feed on.

At night, the ants take the caterpillar outside to feed on its food plants, bringing it back inside afterwards. The caterpillar pupates in the ant colony and, on emerging as an adult butterfly, the ‘guest’ is escorted to the surface to begin its adult life.

So if a wildflower and butterfly walk appeals, now is a good time to come. Any of the wild areas are good to observe the plants and animals but Tout Quarry, Broadcroft, King Barrow Quarry and Portland Bill are all well known and easy to find.

I had heard that Lulworth Cove was a hot spot for sea-glass and decided to stray out of my home area to do a reccie.

It is often described as a horseshoe shape, but the form that popped into my head was a scallop shell.

The geology angle is that the thin limestone around the outer edge of the cove was worn away by the sea which then came rushing in and glacially eroded the weaker chalk to create the fascinating shape we recognise today.

At first I could not see any sea-glass and with the sun blasting down retreated to the blissful shade of The Boat Shed to rehydrate.

Local knowledge is very valuable so I enquired here and was told that there is not much beachcombing to be had, as

Loving the art of glass at cove

Lulworth Cove gets very little long-shore drift.

Yes, I saw her point – nothing much can get in or out of the tiny opening at the top. However, what was deposited there in the form of Victorian glass bottles or ancient shipwreck booty has no escape.

Going back to the beach I saw a few people sitting sifting the shale with their hands. They showed me their loot, ‘tinies’, as they are called. Plonking myself down in a shingle spot I could now see the odd piece of sea-glass.

These had probably been

revolving round the bay for decades, if not centuries – becoming more frosted and therefore more desirable in the world of beachcombing.

The more I looked the more I saw!

All it took was sitting down and taking a bit of time.

Back at home I decided to make the shape of Lulworth cove with the sea glass. Using a flat scallop as a base I used the colour sea foam for the water, and various greens from kelly green to olive for the grassland at the edge. The natural lines of

the scallop shell lent itself to the movement of the sea fanning into the bay.

This took me back to my days of home educating and I thought this could be quite a good project for art or geography or geology really? Having quite a few ‘tinies’ left I made a costume jewellery bracelet using up the inside of a Sellotape roll, perhaps a project for kids in the summer holidays? n Jo is available for talks on beachcombing or sacred sites. Devil’s birds at home at village hall Helping out the endangered devil’s birds I clearly remember the first time I encountered swifts. I was about eight and my parents were taking advantage of the long summer daylight to walk us to the park after tea.

As we reached an old Victorian church, we stopped to take in the spectacle of a huge group of these incredible flyers screeching low over our heads and then screaming as they flew high up towards the church roof.

In folklore, swifts were known as ‘devil’s birds’ as their screeching was thought to be like the sound of departed souls. I decided there and then that swifts were one of my favourite birds.

Swifts are dark brown with long wings that make a distinctive scythe shape when they fly. They are

summer migrants, but unlike swallows or house martins, you won’t see them perching on wires or aerials, as they spend almost their entire life on the wing – sleeping, eating, bathing and even mating while in the air.

The poet Wilfred Owen described them as ‘strung in tautest tension by the lust of speed’ and with a top speed of 69mph they do hold the record for being the fastest bird in level flight.

Sadly, you’re much less likely to encounter an appropriately named ‘scream’ of swifts now.

Their numbers have halved in the last 20 years, with extreme weather, a decline in their insect food and loss of nesting sites being put forward as

possible causes.

In the beautiful village of Briantspuddle, however, the swifts are doing well.

A visit to the lovely village shop is a chance to see how the swift families are faring on the wall of the neighbouring village hall. When the thatched roof of the hall needed replacing 14 years ago, the villagers were aware that as swifts nested in the roof it would make them homeless. Taking advice from Swift Conservation, they put up three specially designed nest boxes, pictured, near where the swifts nested. Two were used straight away but sparrows used the third one. The sparrows have been discouraged since by blocking the entrance holes until the swifts arrive from Africa in late

spring. Two more nest boxes have now been added and all five have swifts in them this year.

Some villagers have also put swift boxes up on their houses and the swift population is steadily increasing. The adaptable Briantspuddle sparrows find plenty of nest sites in the shop’s tiled roof and holes in the thatch of other cottages. Thank you so much to Angie for the information.

The RSPB encourages us to report where swifts are nesting (Swift Mapper), and Swift Conservation (swift-conservation.org), has a wealth of information on how to help our endangered swifts, including how to include special ‘swift bricks’ in new buildings and what to do if you find a swift on the ground.

Here they will land and, er, proceed to relieve themselves all over the spores and hyphae by wiggling their rear ends under the influence of a behaviour modifying chemical in the fungus. The flies lays eggs and the hatched larvae feed on the fungus.

The spores fuse to form winddispersed sexual spores on what has now become a bright orange fruiting body covered in fertile cups. If the

choke is troubled by too many flies it will produce a chemical which reduces the fly’s resistance to an endemic bacterium (Wolbachia sp.) which, let off the leash, sterilises the flies.

Despite all this, it seems that choke is not quite the parasite I have portrayed – it gives something back. Infected grasses are aided by three powerful alkaloids produced by the fungus.

First, they make the grass less palatable to grazing animals. Second,

they confer an almost magical ability to survive in drought conditions.

Third, and now mercifully rare, they can poison ruminants. This is visible as ‘fescue foot’, a form of gangrene due to vaso-constriction and ‘fescue toxicosis’ – a failure to put on weight, reduced fertility, a rough coat and an intolerance to bright light. There is also ‘summer slump’, but I think we have seen enough.

Cheers! Medals for Dorset cider firms Two West Dorset cider makers snagged wins at the British Cider Championships.

Dorset Nectar, based at Waytown, won a bronze and silver for their Old Harry Rocks Vintage Dry Cider.

Ryan Strong from Dorset Nectar said: “It was a very stiff competition this year, with over 500 entries from all over the country and even in the international classes, from abroad.”

A family-run cider company that can trace their roots to Sir Isaac Newton also had a reason to say cheers after winning medals. Isaac Cider, based at Coombe Down Farm in Beaminster, won silver for both their Calculus and Alchemy ciders in the medium cider category, as well as for Alchemy in the taste and presentation category.

The company overcame strong competition from almost all of the 503 competitors taking part in the championships at the Royal Bath and West Show last month.

Isaac Cider is run by salesman Giles Wood and his wife Fran, with their son Rollo as cider maker and his brother Bertie as chief design consultant, creating the company’s logo and labelling which helped scoop the taste and presentation award.

“We’re really pleased to receive these awards since we’re relatively new to cider making,” said Fran.

“We started three years ago, living on the farm where we grow the apples and make the cider.”

Their orchard was planted in 1973, years after the family discovered their lineage included Sir Isaac Newton, who famously formulated the

laws of motion after an apple fell from a tree onto his head.

“We knew about our Isaac Newton connection before starting the business,” Fran explained. “My husband’s great aunt did our family tree. Much like the apple, it all just fell into place. We had our own eureka moment. Sir Isaac didn’t have children, but our family is related on his sister’s side.”

She added: “Our son Bertie does the logos and we had some fun, family board meetings about that.

“We didn’t want ‘ye olde cider company’ branding. We wanted something new and people seem to love it.

“People keep asking us when

we will be bringing T-shirts out.”

Isaac Cider was encouraged to enter the Royal Bath and West Show by their consultant Bob Chaplin, who has decades of industry experience.

“Being a craft cider maker it’s difficult to get consistent apple yields year after year,” Fran said. “Some years are better than others, and we’re not a major manufacturer like Magners or Strongbow, but last year was a particularly good year.

“Bob took one sip of it and said, ‘that’s really good – you should enter this for some awards.’ You don’t really ignore advice like that.”

Fran said she and her family are still awaiting the results of their entry into the Taste of the West awards and are celebrating the launch of not only their award-winning Alchemy brew but also their own cider vinegar. n For more about Isaac Cider visit isaaccider.com

Pub really going places in destination awards The Brace of Pheasants pub in Plush, Dorchester was named the best destination pub in Dorset, Somerset and Bristol at the Muddy Stilettos regional awards.

Some 77,000 businesses were nominated and 800,000 votes were cast.

Publican Matt Gernetzky

said: “Being a small country pub in Plush we are so happy and excited about being nominated and winning in such a large group with so many excellent pubs in this area.”

The pub will now be entered into the national finals in the best destination pub category.

What more of a golden tip do you need? When it comes to food and critics, indeed any criticism to be honest, I always find it helpful to consider the source. In this case the source is golden as they know the form here.

Everything came with its own sauce so there was no need to use the sachets also provided that are a personal pet hate of mine.

Ripping the corners with your teeth until the thing explodes all over you and your guests.

The main menu was as diverse as the snacks drawing from many continents. Fritto misto, prawn tacos, Thai squid salad, beef tataki, pad Thai, Indonesian seafood curry etc, etc. A vast global food fest could be had here without the tedium of travel. The daily specials included local skate in brown butter with capers, a personal favourite and straight out of Lyme Bay. No room for puddings but heard they are delicious.

In short – well-run, great food, welcoming staff and just a lovely place to be.

Those little fruit tarts... they’ll all love ’em “Summer’s here and the time is right”; Martha and the Vandellas certainly managed to capture that quintessential party feeling and warm summer evenings are just perfect for any get together.

We have an annual gathering of ‘clans’ every June. Our family grows in numbers every year with new partners and new additions, and this year was no exception. It can be somewhat daunting catering for large amounts of people even for the professional.

Keep it simple; the most successful parties focus on simple, fresh, and seasonal ingredients. Plan, change the menu several times if necessary until you feel comfortable with your meal, and avoid trying that dish that you’ve never done before but looks lovely in the picture. When menu planning, factor in food that can be made in advance – quiches, terrines, pâté: these won’t spoil and will improve for a few

guests attempt to carve slices leaving your perfect joint looking like a scene in a gory horror movie. Sharp, unfamiliar knives is a perfect formula for that unscheduled visit to A&E.

STRAWBERRY TARTS FOREVER: A delight for summer

Asparagus, Leek and Hazelnut Tart This makes a large tart to serve 10 people Ingredients: 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil 2 leeks, cleaned and finely sliced 3 medium eggs 300ml double cream

300ml crème fraiche 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon thyme leaves, picked and finely chopped 50g butter, melted 4 large filo pastry sheets (Jus-Rol is good) 125g extra-mature Cheddar cheese, grated 150g asparagus spears, trimmed and

250ml of whole milk, 1 tsp vanilla paste, 50g of caster sugar, 3 egg yolks, 10g of plain flour and 10g of cornflour.

In a bowl mix together the egg yolks, sugar, and flours.

Bring the milk and vanilla paste to the boil, let it cool for a minute. Pour a third over the egg mix and whisk until smooth, Pour the egg mix back into the saucepan and continue to whisk until thick.

Leave to cool.

Spoon into pastry cases and decorate with fresh fruit.

Savoury Asparagus and Brie Bread Pudding Savoury bread and butter pudding is very adaptable, making use of whatever veg or cheese is in the house. This is great for leftover bread although I like a chunky loaf. If you have crusts and bits do make the most of them, storing odds and ends in the freezer until you have sufficient. I cook my asparagus until al dente before adding to the dish.

Use a small shallow oven dish or casserole, approx 1.5 litres.

Serves 4 4 tbsp butter 1/4 sliced onion 1 clove garlic or 1 tsp easy garlic 125g cooked asparagus 210g old bread 125g brie 125g cherry tomatoes 3 free range eggs 240g full fat milk 1/2 tbsp wholegrain mustard the processor or whisk by hand in a jug. Season well.

Preheat the oven to 180C or 160C fan and lightly brush a quiche dish measuring 28cm x at least 3cm deep with melted butter. Brush the top of a filo sheet with more butter and press into the dish, butter side up. Repeat with remaining filo sheets, rotating them so that the base and

same pan for about 10 minutes until softened.

Toss in the asparagus and cook for a further minute.

Remove from the pan.

Cut the bread into 2cm cubes, add to the pan and stir to soak up the juices.

Pack the bread into the oven dish. Cut the brie into small pieces (1cm) and tuck it between the bread so it’s evenly distributed. Put on the asparagus and finally the tomatoes.

WHAT A DISH: Savoury Asparagus Make up the and Brie Bread Pudding custard by Salt and pepper adding to a bowl eggs, 100g tasty cheese, grated milk, mustard, salt and pepper and whisk well.

Melt the butter in a pan Add to the bread, etc. over a medium heat and Squish it down until fully use 1 tbsp of butter to submerged in the custard grease the dish. Cook the onion and garlic in the sides of the dish are covered, leaving the excess hanging over the sides.

Pour in the cream mixture, then scatter over the grated cheese, leeks, asparagus, peas and hazelnuts. Brush pastry edges with any remaining melted butter.

Cook in the oven for around 45 minutes until the filling is set and the pastry is golden.

Put the oven on at Gas 5/ 190C. Scatter the cheese over top of the dish. Stick it in the oven and cook for around 25 - 35 minutes until the cheese is gently brown.

Check that the custard is cooked – when you press the pudding down there should be no liquid. If there is put it back in the oven for five minutes.

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Dish it up and serve with salad. There’s Ghana be a gospel choir at the Marine It’s not every day that a gospel choir visits Lyme Regis, let alone one from West Africa.

Alogte Oho, the number one artist from Ghana, is visiting the UK for a live session at the world-famous BBC Maida Vale studio – where everyone from David Bowie to the Beatles have performed. BIG DOLLS: Transe Express’ Poupées Géantes will be on parade through the streets of Weymouth

A celebration of culture and creativity, the Inside Out Dorset festival will return from September 15 to 24.

Activate Performing Arts will present performances, workshops, installations, parades and more to audiences at five locations throughout the county over nine days.

Throughout the festival there will be art installations on display at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest – including two pieces called Lachrymae and Saeflod – by pianist and Artmusic founder Helen Ottaway.

The Working Boys Club – Dorset-based identical twins Jason and Adam Dupree – will deliver a “multi-sensory” sound installation called Serving Sounds that aims to “create connection through music” at Wimborne on Saturday September 16 and at Poole on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17.

From Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24, the Wild Woodbury site at Bere Regis will host a programme of artistic workshops and talks as well as local food vendors.

At the site, French artists De Chair et d’Os will present Five Seasons, an artistic piece about “rituals and our connection to the earth”.

A clay oven will be built at the site as part of workshops ahead of the performance days.

The parade will see three giant dolls gliding through

the crowd, with the voices of three opera singers transforming the street into a theatre.

The singers will perform beloved classical pieces by composers such as Bizet, Mozart and Verdi, contrasted with rhythmic backing from Les Tambours.

Organisers say the festival “aims to remove

traditional barriers” to accessing the arts as well as encourage people to “discover and appreciate” some of the unique places across the county.

A festival spokesperson said: “At the core of Activate’s programming is the ethos that anything is possible and everyone is invited. The festival works across both urban and rural locations. In addition to the main programme, Inside Out Dorset’s engagement activities aim to attract new audiences to areas of the county and communities which have been shown not to regularly visit professional arts or green spaces.”

Organisers say the festival also aims to “support Dorset’s tourism sector in the post-summer ‘shoulder’ season”.

The spokesperson added: “Activate has cultivated relationships with Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and The National Association for AONBs, along with a set of European partners with complementary interests in the relationship between the landscape, artists, land stewards and the climate emergency.

“Many Inside Out Dorset events take place in natural landscapes, raising awareness of their environmental importance, and Activate’s planning ensures there is no negative environmental impact.”

The festival has been running since 2007 and, in September 2021, attracted over 28,000 people.

Culture Lower Bockhampton artist Anthony Paul is celebrating a double success after both his submissions to the Royal Academy’s summer exhibitions were accepted.

Attracting up to 17,000 entries from around the world, only around 850 works were selected to be part of the exhibitions.

Tony’s paintings, both still lifes, use paints made only from pigment, egg yolk and water, and will be on display in gallery six at Burlington House in Piccadilly, London.

One of Tony’s paintings, A Conference of Pears shows fruit in a glazed bowl while Fruits de Mer features a bowl of shells collected by his two daughters.

Tony said: “This pure and simple medium gives my brilliant, lightfast pigments their clarity and richness.

“The bowl was a delight to paint. Glazed pottery isn’t easy to represent, but it’s really satisfying when it works.”

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is open until Sunday, August 20.

New books explore county’s military history and castles Military historian, battlefield guide and former soldier Dean Hollands has penned a new paperback called Dorset’s Military Heritage.

The book explores the county’s military history from the time of the Durotriges tribes and their Iron Age strongholds to modern sea forts and Cold War nuclear bunkers.

Dean Hollands is a local and military historian who served in the Army and Surrey Police.

He conducts guided tours of First and Second World War battlefields in Europe and is an associate member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides.

He is also researcher and volunteer at Aldershot Military Museum.

And author Andrew Powell-Thomas has penned a new book called Castles and Fortifications of the West Country.

The new work explores the history of the castles built over the centuries in Dorset, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Mr Powell-Thomas writes military history, local heritage and children’s

fiction books, regularly speaking at events, libraries, schools and literary festivals across the South West.

He lives in Somerset with his wife and two young sons Dorset’s Military Heritage and Castles and Fortifications of the West Country are published by Amberley Publishing.

A celebration of place West Dorset writer Gail Aldwin has described her latest novel The Secret Life of Carolyn Russell as a celebration of the area.

The story introduces readers to 16-year-old Carolyn, who walks out of a West Country school in the 1970s and is never seen again. The contemporary storyline follows Stephanie, a redundant journalist who takes up podcasting to get to the bottom of the mystery.

After retiring from teaching, Gail volunteered at a refugee camp in Uganda through the Voluntary Service Overseas in 2020. During that time she discovered a passion for true

crime podcasts, inspiring the plot for her new novel.

Suzanne Goldring, bestselling author of My Name is Eva, said: “Using a keen ear to create the voices of a troubled teenager in 1979 and a frustrated midlifer in 2014, Aldwin captures the zeitgeist for each period with telling accuracy.”

The museum is hosting The Natural History Museum’s world-famous exhibition Wildlife Photographer of the Year from July 21-October 29, with more than 100 incredible images of nature and wildlife.

The National Festival of Archaeology runs from July 15-30, with a host of events.

Visitors can take a tour of the Roman Town House, one of the best examples of its kind in England. Or bring children to watch history come to life as the Vikings invade Dorset Museum. Yippee! United artists at Eype show Ten artists and makers from around Dorset are taking part in an exhibition at Eype Centre for the Arts, ‘Art@Eype’, from July 14 to 16, 10am-4pm.

The three-day show, which runs every summer, is put together by three Bridportbased artists – imaginative painter David Brooke, photomontage/mixed media artist Sally Davies and portrait painter Elizabeth Sporne – who invite a changing roster of colleagues from around the county to join them each year. Classical duo line up series of concerts An Italian cellist and a London-based pianist will unite to perform in West Dorset in September.

Born in Spilimbergo, Italy, Riccardo Pes studied at the Music Conservatory ‘BenedeJo Marcello’ in Venice and later graduated from the Royal College of Music.

Composer Alex Boyd enjoys an international career as both a soloist and chamber musician, after making his concerto debut in 1983 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Wonderful WDM seems to go like hot cakes Dear Miranda and all the wonderful team at the wonderful WDM, Have been out and about and, as is often the case, fail to see the wonderful WDM available. Used to be seen more frequently, but over the past few months seems to have been a tad rare.

I don’t want to resort to having to accost passers by – though the temptation to do so has come close at times – especially when I espy they have a copy upon their person and, surely, does one now have to assume that this much loved item has now reached the levels of only being found on the black market across the region?

Dear people, are you aware that, for some at least, this has become an important part of local lives and needed as much as regular medication – bar good wine.

Ed Re the underground bunker at Ringstead Bay (June), aged 99 I remember this RAF complex quite well, and point out that it was protected by extensive minefields, which were divided into sections which flanked the whole of the bay and extended well inland.

I was the officer in charge of clearing the last of these sections, which had been deferred since they were held too difficult to clear and hence needed

special considerations. In this case we took the approach ‘if you can’t find or lift the mines on the minefield then move the minefield’. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? But this is what we did. I have extensive coverage of this work which form the basis of my family records.

Unfortunately, some of the info given is incorrect. The school may have been started in 1939 but not in Herringston Road. It was started by a Miss Thompson in a small bungalow almost opposite St Mary’s Church in Edward Road.

I went there in 1940 and remember it well.

It moved to Herringston Road when Miss Thompson gave up. I was then sent to a convent, probably St Genevieve’s, which was then situated in a large house in Cornwall Road which has since been knocked down. It was replaced with the accountant’s office block at the junction with Albert Road.

China is leading the world on CBDC which differs from credit and debit cards in being programmable. Programmability implies a great deal of control, for example, if you tried to buy what the authorities thought was too much petrol, the transaction could be blocked, likewise you could be blocked from buying the ‘wrong type of food’. If they so decided they could impose a ‘use by’ date on people’s money in order to stimulate the economy. In Canada the government blocked protesting truckers’ bank accounts when they took their trucks to Ottawa.

Drawing a line under boundary moves

The Parliamentary Boundary Commission has just announced its final recommendation for the West Dorset constituency for the next General Election.

There was huge disquiet from the Cerne and Piddle Valleys, who did not want to be moved from West into North Dorset. But equally, scores of people from Upwey and Broadwey did not want to move from South Dorset. To think that the Cerne Giant was going to be in North Dorset was incomprehensible and I know that the thought of Minterne Magna and Sydling St Nicholas being in the same constituency as Verwood, and not Dorchester, was nonsensical.

However, the beautiful parishes of Glanvilles Wootton, Ansty and Hilton will all be welcomed into West Dorset from the next General Election, while it is farewell to Puddletown to

North and Chickerell to South. It took quite a lot to make the case successfully to the Boundary Commission. Both Richard Drax and I constantly made our representations on behalf of constituents to change their original recommendation. I was however sorry to read the official response of the Liberal Democrats that supported the Cerne and Piddle Valleys being moved out of West Dorset. It is duplicitous of their parliamentary candidate to claim on Twitter last week that he was really pleased that Cerne Abbas was staying in West Dorset when the original proposal was supported tenaciously.

In other news, the latest of the Clean Rivers of West Dorset (CRoWD) taskforce meetings took place in the Char Valley. The taskforce comprises of local river representatives across West

Dorset; Wessex Water; and the Environment Agency that I have brought together with the help of local campaigners. I was also pleased to be able to update the taskforce on a number of issues, but also the latest planned investment by South West Water to clean up the neighbouring River Lim. This will have a significant advantage to the ecology, and also to local residents’ ambitions to redesignate Church Cliff Beach as a bathing beach. It was also good to hear of positive news from the Environment Agency on its launch in June of the Chalk Stream Restoration Strategy Implementation Plan, and Wessex Water’s planned investment of £500 million in the late autumn to address storm overflow infrastructure – all of which will have a significant positive impact here in West Dorset.

Come and talk about the change that’s needed Three up-coming byelections (four if Nadine Dorries ever gets round to “immediately resigning” as she said she would weeks ago) will see voters in parts of the UK pass judgement on the track record of this Government and the behaviour of a Conservative Party that has strayed very far from the values it claims to espouse.

It is very easy to get distracted by the Westminster circus and the rolling news of depressing and predictably bad decisions being made by a party that has been in power for far too long, but decisions made in London have a real world impact on all of us here in West Dorset.

We see those decisions in our rivers, we feel them in our pockets, we bemoan them as we try in vain to get an NHS dentist’s appointment.

As well as our weekly canvassing sessions I’m spending June and July holding weekday Q&A evenings in village halls across West Dorset. There have already been meetings in Toller Porcorum, Bradford Peverell, Thorncombe, Askerswell, Stratton, Netherbury, Walditch, Holditch, and Broadwindsor.

We book the hall, and then leaflet everyone in the village

to let them know they can drop in if there is anything they want to discuss. This isn’t about me or the Liberal Democrats.

It’s an opportunity to chat about the issues that affect us all, and what we all think should be done to address them.

Unsurprisingly, there are many issues that are being raised again and again; local bus services (or lack thereof), NHS funding and nurses pay, the cost of food and electricity, sewage in our rivers and on our beaches, crippling mortgage rate increases, the climate crisis, teachers’ pay, protecting our farmers. The list goes on.

West Dorset has a

Conservative-run council, a Conservative MP, and a Conservative PM. If we want to build a better future for West Dorset and Great Britain we need to start changing that. We will have Dorset Council elections early next year but may have to wait a while longer for the Conservatives to give us the General Election we desperately need if we are going to get started on fixing our economy.

Sewage system problems will not just flush away The heavy rain parts of Dorset experienced last month once again resulted in sewage being discharged into the sea – this time at West Bay, Lyme Regis and at seven locations across Weymouth and Portland.

As a result people were advised not to bathe on certain polluted beaches.

This will continue to happen after heavy rain unless there is a massive investment to upgrade of our aging sewage system.

In fact the problem will only get worse as our climate warms and heavy downpours become more frequent.

The main problem with our sewage system is that just about all of it is a single system that delivers both foul water and surface

water to the treatment plants. Such a system is overwhelmed by sudden large amounts of surface water, and, at the moment, the only way to prevent foul water re-entering our properties is to discharge it into rivers or the sea.

Ideally we need to separate foul and surface water into separate systems so that excess surface water is safe to discharge.

This is not going to happen overnight.

As a start though, local planning authorities such as Dorset Council need to be given the power to require all new developments over a

certain size to be built with a dual system. It is madness to allow developments like the Foundry Lea estate on the outskirts of Bridport to be built with a single system.

It would be much cheaper to do this than retrofit in the future.

I accept that many new developments like Foundry Lea are built with attenuation ponds to slow the release of surface water into the system, but these are just sticking plasters covering a serious problem.

We could also try to reduce the amount of surface water that pours into our sewage system during heavy rain by reducing the huge amount of impermeable material we

use to cover the ground.

We should stop tarmacking, or paving over, our gardens and drives; and do we really need to tarmac our public car parks when permeable alternatives are available? I live opposite a tarmacked car park, and during heavy rain a small river runs off it into the drains.

But such actions will not solve the problem. What we really need is a massive government investment to upgrade our sewage system. We can’t delay doing this indefinitely. But this is not going to happen all the time our government believes in market solutions and our sewage is in the care of private, ‘for-profit’ water companies.

Barry’s alternative voice is well worth listening to Whilst campaigning in Sherborne recently some passers-by seemed surprised to see an active Labour Party in such a bastion of Conservativism.

Well, yes, everywhere in Dorset you’ll find Labour members and voters and I’d like to say thank you and well done to our candidate Nick Boothroyd who stood in the Sherborne West byelection.

Another by-election will be held on July 20 for Dorchester Town Council and if you live in Dorchester East, I urge you to vote for Labour candidate Barry Thompson. Barry is proud of his working-class background and Labour values and has taken an

active role in the community over many years.

He’s a voluntary director of the Dorchester Area Community Land Trust, which has brought forward plans to build 15 flats at social rents for young workers with a connection to the town. He’s also a member of the Dorchester Transport Action Group hoping to improve public transport locally. Having lived in the area for over 20 years, Barry knows the community well and will make a great town councillor, bringing an alternative voice to the “nearly one party” council.

In other news the Prince of Wales announced he would put a bit of his spare cash into some homelessness projects including in the Bournemouth and Poole area, and social housing on Duchy of Cornwall land. If Prince William continues in the same vein as his father did at Poundbury, that would be a 35% mix of social housing and shared ownership properties. That’s a welcome starting point but it is far below what is needed.

When we put this into context – £22 billion in annual profits from Duchy of Cornwall land, businesses,

and property – could it be that this is merely a token gesture by the prince to assuage a feeling of deep unease about the inequality of our society? That sense of injustice is further reinforced with the knowledge that the prince has certain privileges and vetoes on laws and planning regulations which mean he is unaccountable to the public and exempt from paying tax. His father as Prince of Wales voluntarily paid tax at an amount of his choosing. If the new Prince of Wales really wants to make a difference to people’s lives and tackle homelessness, he has every means at his disposal. I look forward to the day when he steps up to the challenge.

The participants will prepare and send to the Mediator a note of their position together with relevant documents.

The Mediator will prepare by reading the papers carefully to understand the positions of the participants and the case before the mediation hearing begins.

A legal representative, such as a solicitor, may attend the hearing with the participants.

Participants are given their own private ‘space’ to preserve confidentiality and so they can talk in private.

The Mediator then shuttles between the parties during the mediation, asking questions of the participants about the dispute and exploring whether an agreement can be achieved.

It may be that the participants will wish to discuss their issues altogether on a face-to-face basis but the consent of all participants concerned must be obtained and discussions will only take place in the presence of the Mediator.

Say ‘no’ to rejection and keep going William was a teenage orphan living rough in Liverpool docks. This was 200 years ago, long before children’s services were a thing. He was on his own.

He chose not to join the criminal vagrant community.

Schaw Lindsay grew his fleet to own one of the world’s largest shipping companies.

Not bad for a homeless, teenage orphan not afraid to hear ‘no’ over and over. But it wasn’t easy. In his extensive journals he records how, on both occasions, he came close to giving up. His life would have looked very different if he had.

If you talk to any seasoned business owner or salesperson, they’ll tell you William’s experience of hearing ‘no’, over and over, still happens today. They’ll also commend his persistence.

The ‘no’ comes in many forms: n ‘No, I don’t want your emails.’ (Unsubscribes) n ‘No, I don’t accept your proposal.’ n ‘No, I won’t come into your shop.’ (Walks on by) ‘n No, I don’t need what you’re offering.’

Every ‘no’ hurts. It feels personal. You’re being rejected.

But that’s not true. It’s not personal. They are not rejecting you, they’re telling

you that what you offer isn’t right for them at this moment.

Whether it’s the price, the method of delivery or the product itself – it doesn’t fit what they want.

In every crowd of a hundred people there’s probably only one or two looking for what your business offers, and who are willing to buy right now.

The challenge facing every business owner is to find those people. I know a cold-calling expert who loves hearing ‘no’.

Why? Because it means he’s one step closer to hearing a ‘yes’. He’s also keen to hear ‘no’ early in the conversation, because he doesn’t want to waste time talking to people who’ll never be interested.

Here are the lessons I’ve learned over and over, from William the orphan in Liverpool to some of today’s tops salespeople: n Expect to hear ‘no’ often. n Don’t take the ‘no’ personally. n Be persistent and you’ll find the ‘yes’.

It’s like digging for gold. You have to move a lot of dirt to find it.

The chairman of Sherborne Town is upbeat about ‘making new friends’ following his team’s unexpected change to the Wessex Premier League for the 2023/2024 campaign, which gets underway on Wednesday, August 2.

John Bowers said the switch, which follows failed merger talks between the Toolstation League and South West Peninsula League, came as something of a surprise but that the club will fully embrace the change.

John said: “We were a bit taken aback and weren’t expecting any changes following the breakdown of the talks between the leagues, but after the initial shock, we are looking forward to the season and it will be great to visit some new places and make some new friends.

“We didn’t have much warning and there is no right to appeal, but I think that would be disrespectful to the Wessex League in any case. We will still be playing in Tier 5, so there’s no reason to be anything other than positive. You

never know if there won’t be another change in future, and the merger idea may come back around, particularly if the FA intervene.

By Marina Cave The President’s Prize competition takes place annually and includes playing members from all sections of the Lyme Regis Golf Club Ladies.

The Golf Club President, Geoff Moss, was host to 66 ladies who enjoyed playing in a 3-Ball

Bowmaker competition, which was followed by a tasty cream tea. This competition was well supported by many of the playing ladies’ section.

The winners of the 9-hole competition were Heather Prior, Cyndy Mudford and Louise King, who scored a fantastic 40 points.

Winners of the 18-hole competition were the team of Marina Cave, Jane

Broom and Irene Fairley, who scored 71 points, closely followed by second placed Jane Andrews, Julie Duke and Tessa Gilks with a score of 69 points.

The golf course was in fantastic condition following the Club Championship Week and this combined with the fine weather contributed to a fun and competitive day of golf.

The chairman of Dorchester Cricket Club has been talking to The West Dorset Magazine following the publication of a damning Independent Commission for Equality in Cricket report, which was commissioned in the wake of allegations of racism in the game. Mark Derrien has spoken of the measures that the club has taken to ensure they are ‘ahead of the curve’ when it comes to inclusivity.

Mark said: “We are passionate about doing the right thing at Dorchester and are fully inclusive with regard to all areas highlighted in the report. I like to think that we set a strong example to other clubs.

“I am quite in tune with inclusivity and the needs of individuals. My background is in social work, I have regularly helped asylum seekers and am responsible for safeguarding in football, and am lucky to have likeminded people on the committee at the club.

“We have 150 members and some may have racist views or unconscious biases. My job is to seek them out, challenge and educate, and track positive change. If I can’t change the attitude of the member, then we will insist they cease their involvement with us.

“When recruiting players, I make it clear that we are a diverse group and insist that they embrace our culture of inclusivity.

“Classism and elitism are often overlooked and we are really sympathetic to those who might struggle to pay our fees. We have

added to our subs list that we are open to hardship requests and will always try to look on these favourably.

We don’t charge at all for young carers or those currently out of work, but I would certainly not want to turn these players away when the club can afford to subsidise them. It is about making cricket accessible for all and not making people feel bad because they cannot cover the costs.

“We are passionate about members with disabilities too and have three Disability Dorset players in our Third team – Tom Best, Charlie Thomas and Leon Richer. Our president, Mark Loder, has cerebral palsy and we are passionate about helping those with additional needs to enjoy our wonderful sport.”

Thunder storm to indoor league title in debut A group of young cricketers from West Dorset are celebrating after winning Dorset Cricket Board’s U12 Indoor League after entering the competition for the very first time. A remarkable run of form saw Western Thunder win seven out of their eight matches, to finish with an impressive 30-point lead over their nearest rivals, Christchurch.

The team – Patrick, Jamie, Noah, Charlie, Tom, Art and Georgina – who all play for different local clubs, decided to form a new team back in autumn 2022 to encourage other young people to take up the sport, and to shine a light on West Dorset, which is

often overlooked in favour of the larger and more influential cricket clubs in the east of the county.

The proactive young cricketers came up with their team name and even

designed their own vibrant kit. The team were all new to indoor cricket, and were coached by David Trots from Martinstown Cricket Club, who freely offered his time and expertise to

support the young players.

Across all of the indoor youth divisions, Western Thunder is currently the only team from West Dorset, but the team hopes that others from the region will be inspired to enter next season.

Charlie said: “I have really enjoyed being part of Western Thunder this year, all of the team worked really hard and supported each other throughout the season and I am so pleased that we came top of the league. I’m really looking forward to the next season.”

Doug Reed Cup final places at stake Dorchester and District Evening Cricket League

By Robin Potter The hot weather last month has meant that much cricket has been enjoyed, although, arguably, it has been better for spectators rather than the players toiling in the field.

The line-up for the Doug Read Cup semi-finals will see second division Bere Regis looking to upset perennial finalists St George’s, with Dorchester Casuals facing Martinstown. The winners are due to meet at Dorchester Rec on Friday, July 21, starting at 6.30pm and it should prove a good watch.

Casuals’ good league form continues with seven wins and just one defeat so far. St

George’s have also suffered just the one defeat so far, however Casuals’ wins ‘in the bank’ make them favourites for the title.

Charlton Down are suffering at the other end of the table, winless so far, including a defeat in the cup to second division side Bere Regis. Bere are also performing well and lead their division with six wins from seven games.

Charlton Down Reserves boast an identical record to head Division 3, meaning no team has a 100% win record across the leagues, although two teams are still awaiting their first victories.

We have seen four centurions in the league to date, with Cameron Robertson scoring two – 105 and 103 not out

for Bere Regis. Sam Roles’ 110 for Charlton Down was in vain as his team were on the losing side. Connor Wills hit a century for New Look/ASM in the same match as Cameron's 105, while Phil Holdcroft made an unbeaten 101 for Charlton Down Seconds.

For batting consistency, however, Charlton Down’s Roger Frapwell has the edge with 260 runs, ahead of T Atkins of Puddletown RFC 234, Tom Hewish of Dewlish 205, and Ben Buckland of Frampton 203.

As for the bowlers, Ryan Norman of Puddletown leads with 13 wickets so far, with Martinstown’s Charlie Durrant and Tom Swain of Bere Regis not far behind on 11.

Champion bowler Martin Puckett has been talking to the West Dorset Magazine following his recent double medal-winning appearance at the World Bowls tournament in Warilla, New South Wales.

Martin, who was crowned English National Indoor Bowls champion in Nottingham in 2022, was edged out in a close-fought semi-final against home favourite Aron Sherriff, and paired up with Somerset’s Kirsty Hembrow to also take bronze in the mixed doubles.

Martin said: “It was nice to win two medals, and although I was pleased with the way I played, I was actually disappointed not to do better. The singles semifinal was a tight, high-quality match and it came down to the very last end.”

Weymouth-based Martin is a busy man. He and his wife, Katherine, have a 9month old son, William, and Martin combines his love of bowls with his full-time job as a production manager for Canford Audio on Portland.

Martin said: “Bowls is not the day job, more of a hobby for me, although there are a few players who manage to turn it into a profession. In this country, there aren’t many endorsement or sponsorship opportunities other than from a few bowls manufacturers, and there really isn’t much coverage on the TV in the UK either compared to Australia. We get the World Bowls Tour Championship, which is televised on the BBC every

Champion Martin enjoying his bowls on the world stage January. That is my primary focus now. Qualifying is in October and I hope I can get through to the finals.

“In Australia, they have a bowls Premier League and the sport is on TV once or twice a week. There’s a lot more money in the sport over there and it’s far easier to turn pro.

“I started playing at Moonfleet in Weymouth when I was 11, my grandparents played there and my grandad used to coach me. They had a big U18s section there for a while and I really enjoyed it. I started representing Moonfleet, then the county before having trials for England U25s indoors and outdoors.”

Martin won the National Junior title in 2014 and graduated to the England senior team in 2015. He switched to Dorchester Bowls Club in 2019, and has benefitted from the outdoor and indoor rinks at the club.

Martin said: “It’s a really good, competitive club. We have a few players of a similar age to me and I would love to win something in a team competition with my clubmates.

“Many people think that bowls is for older people, but there is a good core of players aged 25 to 35 at Dorchester.”

Another highlight in Martin’s bowls calendar is

the British Isles tournament which takes place every March.

Martin said: “I played my first one of these in 2015 and they are big games, very competitive. Although the competition features Wales and Ireland as well, it’s usually England versus Scotland in the final. These tend to be massive games, with lots of music and noise, and a good atmosphere in front of a few hundred people.

“Top level bowls is certainly very tiring – not so much physically, but mentally. I have decided to take the summer off outdoor bowls, partly because I’m busy, but also because I missed the first three weeks of the season to go to Australia. I may focus more on the indoor bowls in future, the two versions of the game are quite different.

“I tend to play better indoors and it is more likely to lead to earning money or being employed in the sport.”

Despite Martin’s success at the sport, he remains grounded and still enjoys the social aspect to bowls.

Martin said: “It’s a very social sport, where you can have a beer and a laugh afterwards. It’s really accessible too, and you can enter tournaments and come up against a world champion in the first round.

“I am always happy to play against people new to the sport when I can and always try to be encouraging.”

Sport Our Bridport Rugby Club correspondent has been talking to the West Dorset Magazine to reflect on a mixed season for the Daggers and his passion for the club.

Stuart Briggs, who is Bridport Rugby Club’s publicity officer and has served as vice chairman since 2020, has spoken of his delight at seeing the Daggers’ first competitive girls’ match and the continued progression of the clubs’ Colts, and discussed the wider issues impacting Bridport and other clubs across the region.

Stuart said: “Seeing the girls play their first competitive game has to be a real highlight for me.

“They came up against a really strong and established team from Chard and did really well.

“They scored two really good tries and, although Chard ran out 38-10 winners, I hope it was the start of something special.

“They have worked so hard all season and it is great to see this come to fruition.

“Chard are a mature team and have been playing competitively for a while and you could see the difference in ability and experience, although to score two tries was fantastic as they don’t tend to concede them.

“Another highlight of the season was the emergence of some of the Colts, particularly Jack Pellow and Kian Bentley, who were selected for the Dorset U20s squad. We

tend to lose many of our young players, often to Dorchester and Sidmouth, or they move away to university, so it’s always good to see them when they remain with us and progress to the senior ranks.

“We had a reasonable squad for the first half of the season, but a run of injuries and with fixtures coming thick and fast after Christmas, the performances fell away.

“Overall, it’s been a good season for the team and included an excellent run of six unbeaten home games.

“Our pack, coached this season by Ross Duncan, are a real strength and I don’t think they’ve been bettered all season.”

Earlier postponements proved to be a real

challenge for the Daggers this season, and Stuart would like the league to consider the pressures caused by the resultant backlog of games. Stuart said: “Obviously we cannot legislate for the weather, and we had a particular difficult winter with heavy rain and frosts, but I would like to see more flexibility from the authorities in situations like this. They were adamant that we had to finish our fixtures by the end of March to make way for the cup competitions, but this put enormous pressure on us.

“The rule goes that if a game is called off, the RFU expect us to play this on the next available weekend. At one point we had to play seven games in eight weeks which put a real strain on the team. We have fed this back to the league committee, so we will see if they change things for next

season. It is increasingly difficult for players to commit their time to play rugby, with the need to work and with so many other calls on people’s time.”

Stuart has had a lifelong affection for rugby, only natural given that he and his wife, Kathy, used to live in Twickenham.

He said: “It’s hard not to get into rugby when you live there, and I’ve always been passionate about the game.

“When we moved to Bridport in 2012, we came along and were made to feel instantly welcome by President Peter Brook and everybody at the club. It’s a very friendly and inclusive club.

“We are always looking for new players of any age or ability so I would urge people to get in touch. And I can certainly promise a great welcome for anybody who wants to come along and get involved.” n bridportrfc.co.uk

holes in the pulpit, dating from the Civil War. Exit the churchyard by a path to the east leading through an expensive car park to the B3157. Turn right and head east. You’ll soon see opposite a bridleway that takes you along the old railway line to Portesham, a pleasant walk but not on today’s route.

Continue eastwards, taking care when the pavement runs out. After about 500 yards join a bridleway on your right leading south east at first, then east. It’s little used and poorly signed so you might appreciate the Ordnance Survey Application on your portable telephone to show where you are in relation to the path. After a furlong go through an unsigned gate on your left and continue through several fields until, approaching West Elworth Farm, you join a footpath on your right.

in the hedge so I must make another visit in the autumn.

The path leads southwards uphill between hedges. As you approach the top there are good views over Weymouth Bay and Portland. Just over the brow you join the South West Coast Path that takes you westwards along the ridge, at first through a wood then alongside hedges. There are good views over the Fleet and the Swannery. After a mile of easy going, the path swings left and descends steeply down a lumpy hill to join a road at Horsepool Farm.

The road takes you round a bend and heads north towards the village.

You’ll want to pause to see the ancient Tithe Barn and smaller duck pond.

Join a path that leads you up past an ancient wall and back to the church.

Nuclear pioneers aiding cancer fight A Dorset company is pioneering a new technology that looks set to revolutionise cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Tom Wallace-Smith from Dorset and Canadabased Talmon Firestone are the brains behind Astral Systems – the newest company at Dorset Innovation Park in Winfrith.

And with their patented Multi-State Fusion (MSF) Reactor they aim to help hospitals tackle a growing backlog in cancer diagnosis and treatment caused by the pandemic.

Currently UK hospitals rely on three giant nuclear power plants in Europe and South Africa for their

Astral is now bidding for another £1.5m grant from the UKAE’s Fusion Industry Programme.

Kingdom of God is a lot more than a slogan

By Canon Deb Smoth, Team Rector for Bridport How often do we long for a simple message. Doesn’t the world like clarity, certainly?

Our politics thrives on a simple message, on soundbites, a yes or no, concepts that are black and white, easily understood, no room for ifs and buts.

Just think about some of the slogans which are part of our recent history: n Get Brexit Done n Stop the boats n Build the wall Whatever you think of these slogans and others like them – they leave no room for debate, no space for wondering, weighing it all up. They are bald statements bristling with confidence, they know where they stand, they leave

no room for mulling it over.

They are pronouncements that know where they are going.

And often we too are looking for certainty, a wholehearted yes or no to the troubles of our world, the difficulties of our lives and the questions they throw up.

We want the fully-formed answer to the question, because when we get it, then we don’t need to wonder any more. We don’t need to engage because we have an answer. We have the answer.

Jesus said: “Proclaim the good news: the Kingdom of heaven has come near.”

I think we might all have experienced moments when the Kingdom of God has come near.

On the darkest of days, when a kindness is shown you, and there is light in the darkness. Or when you feel so very alone, and someone reminds you there is help at hand.

When you are surprised by generosity, a smile, when someone leaves a cake on the doorstep. When someone speaks a kind word, becomes an answer to prayer, sticks with you through thick and thin.

The kingdom comes near, and is really real, whenever we love our enemies,

When we do these things or they are happening to us, then is the kingdom, so very near.

And wherever they are not happening the kingdom has been overthrown.

The kingdom is about what we do and how we live. It’s what life looks like when we respond to God and show love for others.

Living lives which reveal the Kingdom of God is come near is not a slogan, it is a way of life.
