n West Dorset MP Chris Loder has praised the hard work and sustainability of the Lyme Bay Fishing industry during the Inshore Fisheries Debate in Westminster Hall and urged the Fisheries Minister to further support small fishing businesses and the wider fishing community in West Dorset.

During the debate, Mr Loder urged the Minister to “see what regulators can do to change their way of working” in order to better accommodate the needs of small fishing businesses.

The MP suggested measures such as moving industry meetings and engagements to better suit the working times of fishing businesses so they don’t have to miss out on a working day at sea, or

reducing bureaucracy within the industry to combat fatigue and supporting the mental health of fishing families.

Mr Loder said: “Now more than ever, we need to see the Government and the fishing industry regulators act to help our local fishing families.

“Simple measures like eliminating the bureaucratic nightmare of current red tape or moving meetings with fishermen to weekends or evenings so they don’t miss out on a day earning their bread and butter at sea. I will keep pushing the Government to ensure many of these simple but impactful measures are acted upon to bolster the resilience and wellbeing of our local fishing industry.”

Bridport Art Society has released its 2023 timetable of public talks and lectures.

On January 19, 2023, art historian and former Fleet Street journalist Geri Parlby will deliver a talk called Fiction, Fallacy and Fake News, Spin and Propaganda in Art throughout the Ages’.

On February 16, 2023 Michelle Brown will deliver a talk called The Holkham Bible Picture Book: An Early 14th Century London Artist’s View.

On March 16, 2023 Steven Desmond will deliver a talk called The Artist as Gardener.

On April 20, 2023 Matthew Denney will

deliver a talk called Post War New Towns, Stevenage & Harlow to Milton Keynes – Heroic Architecture or a Concrete Mistake?

On May 18, 2023 Professor William Gibson will deliver a talk called Seals, Sedition and Sacheverell on the use of wax seals in the 18th century.

On June 15, 2023 Stephen Kershaw will deliver a talk called The Cities of Vesuvius.

All the talks will take place at Bridport Town Hall from 2pm on each date.

Campaigner John Moorby is continuing his fight with the Duchy of Cornwall over the building materials being used in Poundbury.

Mr Moorby made national headlines last year for leading a protest against what he believes to be outdated rules that require only wooden windows frames are used in Poundbury’s buildings.

Mr Moorby has warned the Duchy in writing that he still wants to replace his wooden window frames with uPVC frames in defiance of the Duchy’s rules.

In an open letter handdelivered to the Duchy, Mr Moorby wrote: “In due course I will want to replace some wooden window frames with similar ones made of uPVC – but the Duchy of

Cornwall forbids such a change of material.

“Their reason cannot be worries about pollution or climate change because the Duchy accepts uPVC and related materials for fresh and foul water pipework, rainwater goods, cavity closers, ventilation ducting, electrical insulation, and innumerable domestic fittings.

“And the reason cannot be aesthetics because uPVC doors and window frames can be made to look just like traditional painted wooden ones - except that uPVC ones continue to look good long after the painted (soft) wood ones have flaked, peeled, rotted, been repaired, and probably had to be replaced.

“Surely the reason couldn’t be prejudice. Or could it?”

Review of eagle death case A senior detective is to review the case of a whitetailed eagle found dead on a Dorset estate.

Dorset Police had dropped the investigation and a specialist wildlife crime team was disbanded, leading to fears the matter would never be probed.

However the force now says an officer is looking into why the bird – one of 25 eagles released on the Isle of Wight as part of a reintroduction scheme – was found to have sky high levels of rat poison brodifacoum.

Campaigners believe police dropped the investigation after pressure from West Dorset MP Chris Loder.

Mr Loder caused a storm of protest when he said

police should be prioritising other types of crime.

The RSPB at the time said it was ‘baffled’ as to why the investigation had been dropped. The charity’s global conservation director said it was clear that brodifacoum was being used ‘either incompetently or with intent to kill raptors’ and either way it would be a crime.

But Assistant Chief Constable Rachel Farrell said: “The police have been under no pressure whatsoever. The decision originally to close the investigation was the police’s alone.

“But, it is important that I share with you that we’ve considered this, so we have

asked a senior investigator, a highly specialised trained investigator, to have a look at the investigation, to work with the Crown Prosecution Service and the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme to see whether or not there is anything we can do in respect of proving a crime and taking prosecution forward.

“I can absolutely assure you that this was not a cursory look, this was not a cursory investigation. If the bird was poisoned that is a crime that we would want to investigate and prosecute if possible but rest assured, we have had partners round the table to work on this together, and we’re committed to taking that forward.”

Friday, July 1 A five-day arts festival is due to end on Sunday.

Dorset Arts Festival at Sculpture by the Lakes is showcasing the best artists and makers in Dorset.

More than 60 artists, crafters and makers will demonstrate their skills.

You will be able to watch paintings being created, pots being thrown, jewellery being made and a whole range of other arts and crafts disciplines being demonstrated. Food and drink stalls and access to the 26-acre sculpture park, indoor art gallery, Gallery by the Lakes and sculpture courtyard.

Artists gathering for show Nine artists will be gathering at Eype Centre for the Arts from Friday to Sunday, July 15-17.

Art@Eype is organised

by Bridport artists David Brooke, Elizabeth Sporne and event founder Sally Davies, who invite different artists and makers from around the county to join them each year, filling the beautiful church with a wide-ranging, high-quality diversity of art.

This year two very different sculptors – Andrew Thomas, from Purbeck, and Bridport’s Russ Snedker – alongside Shaftesbury-based abstract and mixed-media artist Andrea Jenkins, expressive painter Moira will host the fundraising weekend of tractors, camping and music.

A previous event in 2019 raised over £17,000 for the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital.

Tractor Run entry is £20 per tractor, a weekend adult ticket is £50. A Friday night only ticket is £20 and a Saturday night only ticket is £30. Tractor Run passengers are £5.

Camping is free – there will be toilets and hot showers.

There will be various entertainments and activities during the afternoon including Dyno tuning, welly wanging, an exciting auction and more...

Trains run every 20 minutes (except for a lunch break) and visitors can enjoy unlimited trips on the day as well as on the miniature railway. Other planned attractions include a shop, light refreshments, model railway and exhibits and displays (including demonstrations of the turntable).

Weds, July 6 Wellbeing Wednesday is

Dorchester Trefoil– the adult section of the girlguiding movement – has launched a new evening section.

Trefoil, is for everyone over the age of 18, including men, who support Guiding or Scouting – and you don’t have to be retired.

The evening group’s next event is a barbecue at Wolfedale golf course in July.

Dorchester Trefoil, which also holds morning and afternoon events, have been busy lately, raising more than £300 at the Jubilee Fun Day in the Borough Gardens with refreshments.

They enjoyed outings to Holme Gardens and to being held at Sherborne Library from 2pm-4pm.

KD-UK and KDA have organised an ambitious road trip from Los Angeles to Rome, Italy, just 6,900 miles in a 29 horsepower 35-year-old Citroen 2CV. This journey is taking place from April to July 2022.

The iconic ‘tin snail’ 2CV has been comprehensively refurbished for the trip. The cost of the 2CV, and its restoration, was funded by a generous donor.

The car was shipped to Los Angeles to start the journey from LA to New York. She is then being shipped back across the Atlantic from New York to Southampton where she will start her UK road trip, heading from Falmouth to London but stopping at Poundbury en route as KD-UK HQ is based here.

The dinner (price £50) is an evening to celebrate this epic journey, which is raising the awareness and funds for vital research.

There is no UK Government funding for research into this disease.

Their aim is to raise £100K and they are almost at their target.

Electricity network ‘at breaking point’ says business group

Bridport Business members have raised concerns over the town’s electricity network – saying it is ‘at breaking point’.

The chamber has written to the CEO of Western Power, with copies to the Business and Energy Secretary and Chris Loder to warn them the network is ‘very close to capacity’ and something must be done before any new development – in particular the 760 homes planned for Vearse Farm.

Chairman Debbie Bond told them a business was unable to set up a professional catering site on a Bridport trading estate as the correct power supply was not available.

The group says it’s impossible to install car charging points without paying a high premium – one resident was quoted more than £1,800 to upgrade to the three-phase connection required for an EV charging point.

New building regulations mean all new builds will have to have an EV charging point, and Bridport Business’s letter points out there are new developments in the pipeline which will put even more pressure on the network.

Debbie wrote: “Local business owners are concerned about the vulnerability of the area’s electrical infrastructure. We are aware that the system is already very close to capacity.

“There is a large residential and commercial development planned on the west of the town, 760 homes plus additional infrastructure, including a school and a care

home. This will put additional pressure on a system already at breaking point, as new building regulations require all new build houses to have an EV charging point.”

She added: “There are concerns about a lack of forward planning and future proofing through the whole system. Bridport is a growing town, which will continue to grow and put strain on its infrastructure, for the foreseeable future.”

A spokesman for Western Power said: “Western Power Distribution is committed to ensuring that our services meet the needs of homes and businesses in Bridport.

“Our network is robust in meeting the existing demands being placed upon it. We recognise the town is expanding and are carefully monitoring the performance and capacity requirements of the network serving Bridport, responding to future needs as best we can. We are fully committed to helping residents adopt low carbon technologies, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, and seek to minimise the cost of providing infrastructure for them as much as possible.”

One of the oldest fairs in Wessex will be taking place on July 16 on the grounds of Yetminster Community Sports Club.

The Yetminster Fair has been running almost continuously since the 13th century, when it was formed under a charter granted by the Bishop of Salisbury, Simon de Ghent, for a fair ‘to be held in his manor of Yetminster’.

The charter also included the right to hold a market on Mondays so locals could sell their products, cattle and their crafts.

Yetminster Fair was traditionally held on the Eve of St Andrew’s Day, November 30, but by the 19th century the fair was held twice a year in April and October.

For many years the fair was held on Upbury Farm and boys from Boyle’s School, which was set up for local, poor boys endowed by Dorset scientist Robert Boyle, were given the day off to attend the spectacle.

People came from far and wide and until 1947 livestock sales were a big attraction at the fair.

All’s set fair for the historic fair tickets were issued, and it was agreed that the 10.32am express train from Weymouth would stop at Yetminster so people could attend.

The format and date for the fair has changed much over time.

In more recent times, The Yetties, one of

the country’s best known folk groups, who hailed from Yetminster, attracted big crowds for their annual performance.

Yetminster Fair is now held annually, usually in the second week of July, and the proceeds are distributed to local organisations later in the

year. The lively atmosphere on fair day complements the oldworld charm of the village, evoking memories of a bygone age and attracts visitors from far and wide.

This year the fair will feature a host of attractions, including a dog show and classic car display, a tug of war, Rob Barfoot’s bouncy castle and some 50 stands.

Sherborne’s Abbey 104 Radio will be hosting events and there will be musical entertainment a and dancing from the Blackrock Irish dancers to the lovely voices of Stanchester Quire.

Live music continues at The Sports Club until the evening with Greg ‘The Piano Man’ Agar followed by Band in a Box. The fair opens at noon and admission is only £1, including a programme and entry into the Lucky Number draw.

Don’t feed the gulls: It’s for their own good Litter Free Dorset is urging people not to feed the gulls this summer.

The Don’t Feed the Locals campaign is asking us all to take care about how we dispose of rubbish, especially our food waste, in the coming months.

Sophie Colley, Litter Free Dorset’s coordinator, said: “It’s really important we do not feed seagulls as encouraging this bad behaviour can

lead to them relying on scraps from humans. This can result in greedy gulls pulling rubbish out of bins, scattering litter everywhere, to find scraps or stealing straight from our hands or laps.”

Ria Loveridge, Mitigation Coordinator at the Bird and Recreation Initiative (BARI) said: “This campaign isn’t just about litter on our streets, it’s also an important

message about the health of our most iconic seaside birds. Just like humans, gulls get addicted to junk food. This junk food diet is proving devastating for their gut health and although it may seem like there are loads of gulls around, the Herring Gull has actually been on the RSPB Red list since 2009 due to declining populations. Gulls need our protection.”

Legal staff in £5.5k march for soldiers Solicitors swapped courtrooms for the coastline as they trekked 100km to raise money for soldiers and their families.

A 12-strong team from Ellis Jones Solicitors raised £5,500 for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity by taking on the 100km Jurassic Coast Challenge, trekking from Corfe Castle to Bridport.

Crossways couple Steve and Bridget Symms were waiting at the finishing line at Land’s End to congratulate their community nurse daughter Belinda on her epic cycle ride from John O’Groats to raise money for charity.

Belinda used minor roads, cycle lanes, canal paths, off-road and back lanes, pedalling 1,100 miles over 14 days and two hours.

On turning 50 last year, Belinda, who is a community nurse, decided to take on the challenge – and she was thrilled to raise £2,200.

The Armed Forces Day flag is flying outside County Hall in Dorchester to show support to our past and present serving men and women.

The flag was raised at a special ceremony by Dorset Council chairman, Cllr Val Pothecary.

She said: “We are privileged to have strong and deep connections with the Armed Forces in Dorset, with serving personnel, veterans and their families making up an important part of our community.”

Help at hand with cost of living woe Residents in West Dorset who wouldn’t usually ask for help but might need some are being encouraged to reach out for support early as the cost of living rises.

While many people who have needed help before may be confident reaching out to government services and voluntary organisations for support, the cost of living is now impacting people who may not know where to start.

Cost of Living Help is a new webpage from Dorset Council for support with money, access to food, housing, support for children, mental health and

wellbeing and employment. People can check if they’re eligible for benefits, free school meals, low tariffs for their utilities, and charitable grant schemes.

There’s also advice on housing and employment.

Specialist help is also available over the phone, in person and online from Dorset Citizens Advice.

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance has appointed Charles Hackett as the new Chief Executive Officer, following the retirement of Bill Sivewright.

Charles joins the lifesaving charity, with a wealth of experience across both the commercial and charity sectors as well as experience in working with local government. He spent 17 years at GlaxoSmithKline in a variety of senior roles, including leading the international development, supply and marketing of major new medicines.

For the past five years Charles has been Chief Executive Officer of Destination Plymouth and Mayflower 400; a five-year transformative programme for Plymouth, which has left a lasting legacy of partnership working within the city.

Gillian Bryce, chair of trustees for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, said: “We are very much

looking forward to Charles joining the team at Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. His predecessor Bill Sivewright was always going to be an extremely hard act to follow, but fortunately I think we have found the man for the job.

Fundraising coffee morning in fight against poverty Dorchester Poverty Action is hosting a fundraising coffee morning in the town’s United Church on Saturday, July 2.

A spokesperson for the group said: “For over 30 years this charity has been helping local people in DT1 and DT2 at points of crisis by providing emergency grants of up to £250 via a

“During covid the charity has been particularly busy, but now there are different financial pressures with rapidly rising prices of food, fuel and many everyday items.

Fire AGM hears of ‘challenging’ year Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority hosted its AGM at the service headquarters in Salisbury.

Authority committee members received their annual performance report for 2021 to 2022. The report told committee members the fire authority had completed more than 7,700 ‘safe and well’ visits to vulnerable people, contributing to a small reduction in accidental dwelling fires.

The report states the service reduced the number of unwanted fire alarms by almost 9% against the fiveyear average, ensuring ‘cost avoidance savings of

over £175,000’. The service also achieved its ‘corporate target for emergency response times’. Other highlights of the report included the service’s ongoing work to support Ukrainian refugees.

Chief Fire Officer Ben Ansell said: “2021-22 was another challenging year.

Raise a toast to Fudge’s Firewater

It’s rare that a medicinal nostrum from a bygone era is held in high regard.

Images of snake oil salesmen plying their dubious wares from roadside stalls spring to mind.

But in Bridport there was one medicinal product the locals swore by for more than 50 years – Fudge’s Mentholated Honey Syrup – known affectionately as Fudge’s Firewater.

Essentially a local variant of Gee’s Linctus, the main ingredients of Fudge’s Firewater were a camphorated tincture of opium and oxymel of squill, a mixture of honey and vinegar made from the squill plant macerated in acetic acid.

It also contained tolu syrup, a sap-like substance from the Balsam tree, to which menthol was added.

Fudge’s Firewater was created and sold by pharmacist Kenneth Fudge from his Bridport pharmacy at 7 West Allington in the 1950s.

In an abstract paper on Fudge’s Firewater, organic chemist Professor Philip Strange writes: “Most nostrums ceased to be available after the implementation of the 1968 Medicines Act, but ‘Fudge’s Firewater’ survived into the 21st Century.

“Many local people had fond memories of the product, and Fudge’s Firewater soon entered local folklore…people’s experiences of it have

been captured by means of a ‘Memories of Fudges Firewater’ page on Facebook.”

The tale of Fudge’s Firewater begins with its creator, Kenneth Charles Fudge, who was born and raised in Blandford. After working as an apprentice pharmacist in his hometown, he qualified in his own right in 1933.

Records show he spent the early part of his career in London, but he would later move back to West Dorset and open his West Allington pharmacy next to Balsons butcher’s shop.

In his paper, Professor Strange writes that Fudge’s was ‘a traditional pharmacy that sold the usual range of toiletries, cosmetics and photographic requisites, in addition to having a thriving trade in the sale of over-the-counter medicines and a busy prescription dispensing service.’

He adds: “A Kodak sign

was displayed prominently above the door, and attention to the pharmacy was drawn by a magnificent sign on which the word ‘chemist’ appeared below a mortar and pestle and which hung above the shop window.

“The only downside was that the street outside was subject to occasional flooding.”

In 1973, Mr Fudge retired and transferred the recipe for his famous firewater to Joe Sparrow at 24 East Street Pharmacy.

The recipe would change hands several times over the coming decades along with ownership of the pharmacy business.

It wasn’t until 2006 that then pharmacy owners Moss Chemists (later Alliance Pharmacy) ceased production of Fudge’s Firewater at its Bridport branch.

From 2006 to 2009 a variant of Fudge’s Firewater was still available, with a private

prescription, at Weymouth’s St John’s Pharmacy.

Much to the disappointment of many, Fudge’s Firewater was no longer available after 2009.

The ‘Memories of Fudge’s Firewater’ page has 67 likes and dozens of comments, such as: ‘It tasted like red diesel mixed with the finest brandy – lovely’ and another commentor pleading: ‘Surely there must be a chemist in Devon or Dorset that can make Fudge’s Firewater?’

It seems like there’s several West Dorset residents out there who would love to see this old fashioned cure-all make a triumphant comeback.

Ex-train guard MP condemns strike action on railway West Dorset MP Chris Loder condemned the rail strikes organised by the RMT Union, which affected all services in West Dorset.

During a heated debate in

the House of Commons chamber, Mr Loder who prior to his election as MP in 2019, had a 20-year career working on the railways and was a member of the RMT and

said: “This Government and this Secretary of State is on the side of taxpayer, the passenger and the staff because we want to see staff on the railways getting a pay rise but we

also need to make sure we make the railways fit for purpose as well.”

Mr Loder worked trains as a guard in the last strikes of 2019.

Council flies flag in memory of Nazi victims Dorset Council flew the Roma Flag at County Hall for a week in commemoration of the deaths of all the Roma and Sinti murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz – and in recognition of Dorset’s largest ethnic minority.

Kushti Bok is a Dorset-based group made up of Gypsies, Travellers and others. With the support of Kingston Maurward College, they try to give a voice to the Gypsies and Travellers of Dorset.

Kushti Bok chairman Betty Smith Billington said they are proud Dorset Council recognises their largest ethnic minority.

Council leader Val Pothecary said: “The Gypsy and Traveller community are part of the rich, diverse community we have here in Dorset, and we are proud to

fly their flag. As a council we strive to address inequalities for people who are disadvantaged or treated less favourably based on their race, sex, disability, age,

gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sexual orientation or religion/belief. We are committed to supporting all of our communities.”

The Roma heritage can be traced back to North India from where they fled due to persecution and moved across Europe.

More than 200,00 Roma and Sinti were murdered or died as a result of starvation or disease. Many more were imprisoned, used as forced labour or subject to forced sterilisation and medical experimentation.

Nature reserve opens in Angela’s memory A new nature reserve has been opened in honour of Dorset wildlife conservation and farming champion Angela Gerardin.

Angela’s daughter Fiona cut the ribbon to the site at Bere Marsh Farm at Shillingstone near Blandford Forum.

The nature reserve is the brainchild of the Countryside Regeneration Trust, who say they are committed to ‘breathing new life into the 92 acres the trust has committed to keeping alive Angela’s inspiring legacy.’

The trust’s chief executive Danielle Dewe said: “This is our way of honouring

Angela and all the magnificent work she did in demonstrating all those years ago how farming and wildlife could holistically work together.

“She was both a pioneer and an inspiration, so we hope that the reserve is a fitting tribute to her wonderful memory.”

After cutting the ribbon to the conservation site, Fiona Gerardin said: “This is the perfect way of reflecting my mum’s lifetime of work.

“She absolutely loved the area where the reserve has been created and talked so much of the plans that she had for it.

“I am so pleased that the Countryside Regeneration Trust bought the farm because they are sensitively reflecting all that she believed in and worked hard to achieve. It holds so many memories for me that it is reassuring to know the place is in good hands.”

The nature reserve has been created on the now disused Somerset and Dorset Railway Line which runs through Bere Marsh Farm – a piece of land which particularly inspired Angela Hughes because of its rich diversity of wildlife created by the manmade embankments and cuttings.

Angela, one of the founders

of Dorset Wildlife Trust, bought Bere Marsh Farm in 1971 to add to another family-owned farm, East Farm, at nearby Hammoon.

As well as managing a significant herd of dairy cattle she still found the time to forge a second career in wildlife conservation, advocating for a harmonious fusion with agriculture and farming.

A keen ornithologist and wildlife filmmaker, Angela also founded the nearby Ham Down Woodland Burial Ground and, in 1982, was awarded an OBE for her services to conservation and nature.

Pub gearing up to host fundraising farmer’s market The Hunters Moon in Middlemarsh is holding a farmer’s market from 11am-2pm on Saturday, July 2.

The pub is raising money for Parkinson’s UK, with a variety of

stalls to include ciders, meat, jams and chutneys, cakes and local crafters. The market is the latest in a string of events raising money for the charity this year, including quiz

Freewheelers are standing by for the Meet the freewheeling lifesavers from across the county border who help save lives in West Dorset.

The Devon Freewheelers work with Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Dorset County Hospital and other services to deliver blood for emergency transfusions.

Despite their name, the Devon Freewheelers operate a dedicated blood delivery car and a team of volunteer drivers in Dorchester.

Pete Norster, local coordinator for the Devon Freewheelers, said: “Although we are a Devon-based charity, we have a dedicated local team of volunteers whose sole role is to maintain the supply of blood products to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

“Our charity was founded in 2009 and now serves the whole South West, providing a free transport and courier service, supporting the NHS, air ambulances, surgeries and the community, at no cost.

“This includes a dedicated blood delivery car and team of volunteer drivers based in and around Dorchester. The cost of all these services is funded entirely through generous donations from businesses, organisations and the public.”

Since 2016, the Devon Freewheelers have been collaborating with the air ambulance and Dorchester hospital, as well as the South Western Ambulance Service

The freewheelers’ blood deliveries are usually for patients suffering major trauma at the scene of road traffic accidents or on their way to hospital.

Pete added: “From the very beginning, Devon Freewheelers were

invited to maintain the supply of blood products to the air ambulance – at no cost to them or the NHS – using a marked vehicle, provided by the Henry Surtees Foundation and based at the Dorchester Fire Station, Poundbury.

“A team of 10 local freewheeler volunteer

drivers is on call 24/7 to transport blood to the air ambulance.

“Volunteers are allocated an agreed number of ‘duty days’ for each month to ensure that every hour of every day is covered.

“Blood products are also routinely collected by our volunteer drivers from the Blood Transfusion Laboratory at Dorset County Hospital every 48 hours and transported to the air ambulance base at the Henstridge Airfield on the Dorset-Somerset border.”

Pete said: “To give an indication of the level of support provided by the freewheelers: in 2021, the team made 230 deliveries to the air ambulance. This included 189 scheduled runs and 41 responses to major trauma incidents.

“The local team of freewheelers are rightly proud to identify as one small part of the overall team, and of the service that we are able to continue providing to the air ambulance.”

Three-year labour of love comes to

A collection of farm buildings that were on the brink of falling down have been utterly transformed in a threeyear labour of love.

Farmer Nick Read, 62, was inspired to create a beautiful – but totally inclusive and accessible – set of holiday cottages after he struggled to find his mum, who has multiple sclerosis, somewhere accessible to have a holiday that didn’t look institutional.

He wanted somewhere with all the sumptuous design you’d find in top class holiday accommodation, but which offered all the access and facilities disabled people would need to enjoy their break, indoors and out, independently.

“My mum would always want to go out sketching or bird watching while on holiday,” he said. “But that would involve dad getting her in the car and taking her somewhere, and then waiting for her. I couldn’t understand why everywhere that was fully accessible was just so ugly.”

Nick set about developing the concept of Wraxall Yard, using the crumbling courtyard buildings as a starting point.

There were many concerns to be addressed: the site falls within every designation you can think of – sites of nature conservation interest (SNCI), the area of

outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and the conservation area.

Fortunately, having been born into a family of designers and architects he made the smart move of employing young architect Clementine Blakemore, who lives in London but has connections with the Architectural Association school at Hooke Court, near Beaminster.

impressed Nick, taking the reins on not only the architecture but the interior design, too. She would hold court in front of a gaggle of tradesmen and be fully in charge, even while dressed in full PPE and feeding her new baby. She guided the project to its completion two weeks ago, navigating covid restrictions, supply shortages due to covid and Brexit – and it’s a

major achievement.

The once dilapidated dairy, which was first built in 1904, has been converted into five light, spacious and beautifully furnished holiday cottages.

There is also a community space for larger gatherings, classes, meetings and meals.

profile beds have been taken apart and the mechanisms used to build beds that have the same function, of allowing any position, but which look like hotel beds.

The site is at the centre of Nick’s organic family farm, and features a livestock barn and workshop for guests to get involved in farming and wildlife activities. Up to 24 people can be accommodated, making it ideal for family gatherings or corporate events. There

are also three electric car charging points.

In addition to the lovely buildings, which feature mostly recycled materials in their rebuild, the land surrounding Wraxall Yard is open to guests to explore. Some 200 metres of oak boardwalk have been built so that disabled and able-bodied guests can see the fields, wetlands, and the River Frome.

Nick’s daughter Katie, 30, has been instrumental, too, despite having a full-time

job as a farming and protected landscapes officer.

She’s a director of the new enterprise, and takes guests on tours, offering an educational element to their stay.

Nick only took up farming when he was 40, having moved with his wife and young children from London, where he had managed an IT company.

“I bought this house with 15 acres of land and the former owner asked if he could leave his sheep there

as they would keep the grass down. I got into having sheep and asked to buy them.”

He now has a flock of Poll Dorset sheep and a longhorn beef herd, spread over two organic farms – the one in Wraxall and one in Frome St Quintin. Over the years he’s done a lot of work for the environment, planting trees and restoring hedgerows. It’s paid off, with many species making their homes there, including otters, eels, dormice and snakes. Most recently, white storks have made their home there.

A mixed orchard is due to be planted this year and a ‘silver pasture’ of grazing woodland, with 800 native trees, is growing steadily.

People came out in force to applaud the armed forces in celebrations and parades at one of Weymouth Town Council’s flagship events – Armed Forces Weekend.

A poignant service, the parade and a flypast from a Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Team honoured Armed Forces personnel past and present in the

three-day celebration, which concluded with a flag raising ceremony on Monday, June 20.

Mayor of Weymouth Ann Weaving was joined by local and visiting veterans for the ceremony outside Weymouth Town Council offices.

Ann said: “Armed Forces Weekend is one of Weymouth’s biggest and best occasions and it’s always so special to see the town come together to honour our Armed Forces personnel of the past and

present. The raising of the Armed Forces Day flag rounds off a weekend of commemorative events and we’re very proud to be flying the flag as a mark of respect and appreciation for all the hard work, bravery, and commitment of those who serve our country.”

Cllr Christine James, Armed Forces Covenant Champion said: “This year’s three-day celebration in support of our armed forces is especially poignant as we mark the

Support group’s £3k boost

celebration 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. Weymouth’s long-standing association with the armed forces means we’re immensely proud to be able to host this event once more. It’s the first time that we’ve been able to run a full programme of celebrations since the pandemic so it’s fantastic to be back as this event really does draw the crowds to our beautiful seaside town.”

The MoD awarded the council a £10,000 grant.

A bereavement group received a £3,000 boost to help keep its vital service running.

Bridport’s mental health charity The Burrough Harmony Centre was given the cash by Dorset NHS Community Partnerships to continue running the bereavement group.

Services manager Carrie Gamble said: “We are very thankful to the Dorset Community Foundation for helping us in this way.

“At the end of last year, we set up a pilot group that offers support for bereaved people; the bereavement group fosters wellbeing, reduces isolation and increases knowledge and understanding.

“This grant enables us to carry on that work. Although everyone experiences grief in a different way, peer support,

understanding and shared experience is very helpful. There is no need for anyone to feel alone with their grief.”

The bereavement group is led by a specialist psychotherapist and offers a warm welcome to bereaved people in a confidential space in which they are able to share their experiences with others and receive both practical and emotional support. There is also input from Ammonite Health Partnership, and funeral directors from AG Down.

The group meets every third Monday of the month from 4pm until 5.30pm at the Assembly Rooms in Gundry Lane Bridport. No referral is necessary – just turn up.

The £3,000 cash boost for the bereavement group came from the Community Partnership Grants Programme.

Joy said: “Our Beavers colony has 18 young people aged five to seven and through the wonderful work done by our Beavers “Leader Kirsty has gone from strength to strength.

“Kirsty is now stepping down and we urgently seek a new Beavers Leader who will plan and deliver Beavers section meetings on a Monday evening from

A spokesperson for the tour said: “Over the last 21 years, the rally has raised more than £20,000 for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust and organisers have secured £1,000 for this cause again so far this year.

“Scores of cars, dating from the 1920s to the 1980s took part in the spectacle and remained on static

display until around 5pm.”

The tour was sponsored by Nantes Solicitors, Dip Shop and Store-It Dorchester. Next year’s tour will take place on Sunday, June 4.

The Black Death’s Silk Road journey

One of Dorset’s more dubious claims to fame is being home to the port through which the bubonic plague entered England.

A somewhat macabre plaque on Weymouth harbourside declares: “The Black Death entered England in 1348 through this port. It killed 30-50% of the country’s total population.”

And while we know how the plague travelled along the Silk Road into southern France and on to England, we have never known exactly where the Black Death originated – until now.

Research conducted by an international team of scientists has pinpointed the exact birthplace of the precursor to not only the bubonic plague, but all modern-day plagues, in northern Kyrgyzstan.

The research team’s investigation began when they found evidence of a sudden spike in deaths in the late 1330s at two cemetery sites near Lake Issyk-Kul in modern day Kyrgyzstan.

Out of almost 500 tombstones at the sites, all dated between 1248 and 1345, 118 of the stones were dated either 1338 or 1339. Many of these tombstones featured inscriptions in the Syriac language that stated

‘mawtana’ meaning ‘pestilence’.

The researchers found the burial sites had been excavated in the 1880s and the remains of 30 people were taken away for study.

When the scientists tracked down the exhumed remains, they extracted DNA samples from the teeth of seven people buried near Lake Issyk-

Kul. Tests showed that three of those sets of teeth contained DNA from Yersinia pestis, the exact bacterium that developed into the Black Death and wiped out almost half of Europe’s population.

So, in an age before flight or industrialised commercial shipping, how did the plague

make it more than 4,300 miles from Kyrgyzstan to Dorset?

In his 2004 book The Black Death 1346-1353: The Complete History, Ole Benedictow, Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Oslo, found that one of the earliest hubs for plague contamination in Europe was Constantinople – now Istanbul – a key trading hub on the Silk Road that ran through northern Kyrgyzstan.

Dr Benedictow’s research shows that after the plague reached Constantinople, both on fleas carried by rats and by people, it spread to Alexandria and to various destinations in Italy and France, including Bordeaux.

Dr Benedictow writes: “In the spring of 1348, ships leaving Bordeaux sailed to aseaport near Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, in all likelihood La Coruna, to Rouen in northwestern France, and to Weymouth.”

Weymouth was a port of ‘considerable importance at the time’ and, as quoted in Grey Friars’ Chronicle: “In this year (1348) in Melcombe, in the county of Dorset, a little before the Feast of St John the Baptist, two ships, one of them from Bristol, came alongside. One of the sailors had brought with him from Gascony the seeds of the terrible pestilence and through him the men of the town of Melcombe were

Dr Benedictow’s research found that the plague ‘probably entered Weymouth around May 8’ and he writes: “From Weymouth the Black Death spread by leaps and bounds along the coast westwards and eastwards.”

Ecclesiastical institutions in Ottery St Mary and Honiton, both in Devon,

also suffered great losses caused by the plague in the first half of July 1348.

Dr Benedictow writes that the “dating suggests the contamination was spread by ship from Weymouth to the small town of Budleigh Salterton on the estuary of the River Otter,

then transported by boat and barge some way upstream.”

By 1349, the plague’s ‘conquest of England’ was complete, writes Dr Benedictow, with the plague turning up in southern Scotland and eventually crossing the sea to Norway on trade ships.

In an age where everybody is still concerned about coronavirus, it is interesting to note that the plague has never been eradicated.

According to the World Health Organisation, some 3,248 plague cases were reported globally between 2010 and 2015 – the dark legacy of this deadly, 700year-old disease.

Go-ahead for gym at units after rethink by councillors Dorset Council will allow two new industrial units in Poundbury to be used for a gym, overturning a past planning decision.

The two units are among 21 being built on the Duchy of Cornwall Parkways Farm site off Middle Farm Way. Planning officers at Dorset Council had previously rejected proposals to use the units for a gym business, believing it would not create enough employment opportunities in the area.

But at the latest area planning committee meeting, Dorset councillors approved the change of use proposal for the two units.

Committee members said

the gym business will still create some employment in the area and will be similar to other gyms on industrial estates in Weymouth, Lyme Regis and Bridport.

Dorchester councillors Les Fry and Stella Jones were among the committee members to approve the change of use proposal by Weymouth based gym company CrossFit. CrossFit co-owner Mark Sergison told councillors the units were ideal for his business, adding that exercise is recognised as being beneficial to people’s mental and physical wellbeing. Councillors were told that the two units now earmarked for gym use are owned by Dorwest

Herbs Ltd, who will sub-let them to CrossFit. In a supporting statement to the council, Dorwest Herbs Ltd said: “The fitness company…offer a broad range of fitness, health and wellbeing services for a range of age groups from primary school age and without limit at the other end of the age range. They will provide employment for two to five employees and will offer a real community feel. This will also benefit companies on the business park who want to offer fitness and wellbeing benefits to their employees and also offer a richer environment to attract new employees.”

Store’s duvet gift to Ukraine families

By Andrew Diprose Goulds Stores has gifted 50 duvets with a retail value of more than £3,250 to Ukrainian families settling in the local area.

The department store’s donation was delivered to a newly opened warehouse on the Granby Industrial Estate in Weymouth. Organised by the Weymouth for Ukraine group, the warehouse redistributes donations to families from the war-torn country moving into the Dorset area.

Ukrainian families can select clothing, school uniforms, and essentials for everyday living – and now, sleeping, thanks to the Goulds Stores’ bedding donation.

Company director Chris Gould said: “When we heard a new warehouse was opening in the area, we contacted Gail, the organiser, to see how we could support Ukrainian families settle into their new local homes.

Both recognised Ukrainian families need access to essential items locally, especially after the closure of a similar facility operating temporarily in Bridport.

While the new Weymouth warehouse will hold the remaining stock from the Bridport closure, it is also on the lookout for donations to meet the

increasing demand.

Fibre company reaches its 100,000th customer West Dorset MP Chris Loder has welcomed the news that Jurassic Fibre has reached its 100,000th customer, with over 3,000 of those premises in West

Dorset, around Bridport and Dorchester, with further expansion planned for the Sherborne area.

Mr Loder said: “Smaller, independent, local

providers such as Jurassic Fibre are proving increasingly instrumental in allowing rural communities to tap into what full fibre has to

offer.”

Jurassic Fibre now employs over 350 staff and aims to create another 150 local jobs by the end of the year.

Exploring grief as another aspect of love

By Canon Deb Smith, Team Rector of Bridport One of the privileges of priesthood is being with families when they are bereaved, helping them to reflect on the life of a loved one, to celebrate a life well-lived and to be able to grieve for the one they have lost.

When someone we love dies, it can feel totally shattering, even a loss that is expected can plunge us into shock we did not anticipate.

And the death of one we love which comes unexpectedly, when life is cut short abruptly, is bitter and hard to bear.

Grief is experienced in so many ways, each of us makes that journey differently and in our way.

Perhaps that is why sorrow

TOUGH TIMES: Grief is experienced in so many ways

can be so isolating, it can feel like no one else in the whole world knows what you are going through, and indeed nobody does entirely. Yet the kindness of friends, family and often strangers too, can help.

Being able to grieve in your own way, with the cushion of kindness when you need it.

When talking to bereaved people, I want to look for hope, even in the deep sadness of the pain they are

in. And hope is found in the love they have for the person they loved and have lost.

Love which binds us to somebody even after they have died. Love that never ends, love that even in the dark days of raw grief, can help us to believe they will always be a part of our life, for their life has enriched our own.

Maggie O’Farrell shares a great analogy on grief. It started with research she needed to do on embroidery for her novel, an area in which she was previously unfamiliar.

O’Farrell approached a friend with experience on the subject. She said: “We were looking at this beautiful thing she had made, and she turned it over and the back was much more complicated, and quite messy,” “In a sense that’s what grief is: you turn love inside out, like a sock or a glove, that’s what you find, isn’t it? Grief is just the other side of love.”

Disgusted by cartoon Boris on a spit

I must admit I was disgusted to see the overtly political and offensive cover to your current issue.

Pretty disappointing to see you do this as your new publication has been pretty good and balanced thus far.

I had been busily promoting your magazine on local social media forums. This will now stop.

I realise that this probably won’t bother you, but you have also lost any publicity on a local Facebook group with 15,000 members.

Jane Pickles That’s a shame, Jane. We would lampoon anyone, of any political party, and have given everyone their say in our magazine – including a great deal of coverage for the Conservatives. And most people have said they found the cartoon funny.

We appreciate not everyone found it funny, however, and we apologise for any offence caused. Artist’s work collected by royalty Landscape artist Mary Shaw will give a demonstration during the ‘Escape to The Great Outdoors’ – exhibition, showcasing the UK’s leading landscape and seascape artists, hosted by the Halo Fine Art Gallery on Saturday, July 2 between 1pm and 3pm.

Then one night, I felt a painful lump in my tummy.

It was a tumour. I was later diagnosed with stage IIIa ovarian cancer.

For me, ovarian cancer affected my whole body.

My right leg bloated due to deep vein thrombosis and a clot on my lung was discovered.

I had intense surgery to drain my kidneys and remove the tumour, as well as a total hysterectomy and many other procedures. I then underwent six rounds of chemotherapy.

Ovarian cancer changed my life, and with no screening in place it is essential that we are all armed with awareness of symptoms.

This means the cancer can be found earlier, and outcomes are significantly

improved. No one should die because of a late diagnosis.

Four out of five women cannot name the key symptom of ovarian cancer, bloating.

This needs to change.

I’m writing to ask your readers to take just two minutes of their time to learn the symptoms and spread the word to their families and friends: persistent bloating, feeling full or having difficulty eating, tummy pain, and needing to wee more often or more urgently.

Become part of this movement to make change happen in government today by campaigning to improve the lives of people affected by ovarian cancer.

Feeding of the 4,000 at food festival Pictures by Neil Barnes and Ines Cavill More than 4,000 hungry punters poured in for Bridport’s annual celebration of food and drink – which had a no waste theme this year.

Despite disappointing weather, people arrived at Askers Meadow to enjoy food and drink from the 50-plus local producers and suppliers, mostly from within 25 miles of Bridport, and the many food-based activities put on to entertain them by the crew of volunteers.

The cookery theatre was buzzing all day and was the home for the day for a number of local chefs: Gill Meller, Pam Corbin (affectionately known as Pam the Jam), Jemima Giblin from Leakers Bakery, Chris Chatfield Head Chef at Station Kitchen and Mark Hix with Sally Allen who cooked up some delicious seafood dishes that were sold to members of the audience in aid of Fisherman’s Mission, raising £230.

For children there was a full day of free foodie fun to enjoy; In the children marquee children were invited to celebrate the pleasure of making and sharing food together by preparing the dishes, drink and decorations for their own special All Taste No Waste Tea Party.

My total knee replacement was finally carried out last Friday and as I write this, I am now back home recovering. Much has been said about ‘hospital food’, which thankfully I have never had to encounter before, so, I thought this was a good opportunity to write about my three-day stay.

After surgery, I was presented with a ham salad.

A good start, the ham was good quality, plentiful, and the salad fresh.

A jacket potato for supper with cheese and beans, good comfort food I thought…my ‘words’ would have been more palatable. Unfortunately, it arrived cold. I’m sure there were some beans, but they proved elusive. The potato was dark, hard, and inedible, something more at home at the bottom of a compost heap, that even Mother Earth was refusing re-entry. The next day I ordered ratatouille; it was enjoyable, just tepid!

A toast to our hospital food thought that hot toast was one of those things that uplifted any jaded soul, the smell alone comforting.

So, I was surprised that this did not appear on the breakfast menu and couldn’t be produced even if I ‘was’ prepared to sell my soul. So, it was sliced bread or nothing.

Sunday lunch, my expectations heightened by fellow patients extolling its virtues. The roast potatoes were excellent, the cabbage was recollections of school meals, but it was surprisingly tasty. The gravy held onto the beef

for grim death, clinging to it for fear of exposing the unfortunate inedible slices of dry beef, it could have been so good. It was flavoursome.

Hospital stays are an eclectic hubbub of activity, busier than London Waterloo station on a bank holiday weekend. Let me be clear, this is in no way a criticism.

Feeding over 400 patients is no easy task, as a former caterer I know. Its failings are not down to the quality of the food, it was in the logistics of delivering hot meals to everyone in this

Little cheesy tarts... you’ll love them This is an easy peasy dish.

Feel free to use your leftovers – that final spoon of pesto from the fridge, tatty old tomatoes, the last bit of brie, etc. In less than half an hour you’ll have lunch ready.

for about 15 minutes.

Whilst the tarts are cooking, get your cheese ready. Take the tarts out of the oven, add the brie and sprinkle with cheddar. Put them back in the oven for around five minutes until they are golden brown and the cheese is just melted.

Finally, remove the tarts from the oven, add a sprig of basil and serve while still warm.

Did you know that if you pinch the tops of your basil out (about 5mm above a node) you will leave the smaller shoots underneath that will continue to grow.

Tomato, Cheese & Basil Open Tarts Serves 2 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry (360g) 1 egg, beaten 2 heaped tbsp store-bought or homemade tomato sauce - this is NOT ketchup but possibly passata 10 cherry tomatoes 2 slices brie or camembert 2 tbsp tasty cheddar 2 basil sprigs* Salt and pepper Take a sheet of readyrolled puff pastry and unfurl. Using a 12cm round cutter cut 4 circles of pastry. Place a 7.5cm cutter

in the middle of two of your pastry circles and cut out two inner circles, making them as central as you can. Place the new pastry rings on top of the circles so that you end up with a shallow centre in which you put your sauce.

Brush beaten egg lightly over the rim of each pastry case.

Spoon in enough tomato sauce to cover the base of each tart. If you find your sauce a little bland (or you’re using passata) add some salt and pepper and a half a teaspoon of pesto to the sauce.

Pop the cherry tomatoes in the centre of the tarts then put them straight in the oven (gas 6/ 200C) to bake

in pastry, brushing the edges with beaten egg to seal.

Repeat until you have used up the pastry and sausages.

Cut the sausage rolls into the sizes you want, brush them with beaten eggs and place them on a baking tray lined with non-stick baking paper, Bake for around 25 minutes until they are golden brown.

The Devil’s Door and the Mermaid PAGAN VIEWS

Whitcombe church’s foundations are over a thousand years old.

My pagan view is that it is a wonderful place to spend some time.

The dedication of the ancient church is unknown and it is now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. I can’t help wondering who it was originally dedicated to.

On the North Wall is a mural of St Christopher holding the Christ child. I knew St Christopher was the patron saint of travellers but I did not know that he particularly specialised in helping people across water.

Perhaps that is why there is a painting of a mermaid in the same mural. Being part beast, medieval Christians used mermaids as shorthand for temptresses. Often depicted, as this one is, with a mirror indicating vanity and is that a comb in her other hand?

Medieval congregations could not read, so often these images on the wall were used as pictorial lessons.

There is such a lot of fascinating lore in churches and just as you think you have learnt the rough idea it changes in the next century.

Whether you believe the origins of mermaids were from tipsy lonely sailors sighting manatees or

water goddesses from other cultures I am sure you will agree it is unusual to find one in a church.

Having just been reading about Oshun, a fresh water goddess, I am struck by the similarity of the mirror to the round ritual fan which Oshun is always depicted with.

Circles are often employed as historical symbols of everlasting protection – I think I

prefer this interpretation to the early churches.

It’s amazing to think this church may once have entertained both Christians and Pagans.

Pagans were originally only allowed in the north door, which has connotations of being less angelic than the other three cardinal points.

Many churches in Dorset and throughout the UK have blocked up north entrances and Whitcombe

church is no exception, as you can see here in the photo. The north entrance was said to be the exit of choice for the departing evilness when a baby was baptised! Why the north got this bad reputation in the first place is not clear.

Probably partly due to the existence of the constellation Draco, the great serpent of the north, which ties up nicely with the Mermaid’s tail.

Wonders of my spectacular lavender hedge Sally Cooke lives in Tolpuddle with her husband, two grown up sons and her spotty rescue dog. You can follow Sally on Instagram at Sparrows in a Puddle The lavender hedge in my garden is at its spectacular best in July. It is covered in stunning scented purple flowers and constantly buzzing with bees. I established the hedge soon after we moved in, carefully potting on a mail-order tray of tiny plug plants until they were big enough to plant in the ground. A sunny position in our dry, free-draining soil has given the hedge the closest Tolpuddle can offer to the Mediterranean climate where lavender originates, and it has thrived. Every summer, the speed with which it changes from an unassuming woody grey-green hedge to something so vibrant and full of life takes my breath away.

Its flowers are rich in nectar so they attract the bees, but it is mostly bumblebees that I see visiting it all summer rather than honeybees.

Researchers have discovered that this is because the bumblebees have longer tongues and so can get at the nectar more efficiently from the tubular flowers. It also attracts butterflies, particularly the whites (maybe because it’s close to my vegetable patch), but also sometimes painted lady, small tortoiseshell and peacock. I’ve been out at dusk and seen moths feeding too, particularly a moth that sometimes migrates in great numbers from Europe in summer, the silver Y. Some of the common moths have names that describe how they look and the silver Y has a marking that looks distinctly like a silver letter Y on its forewing.

By the end of July, the first of the lavender flowers will have set seed. I

won’t cut off the dead flowers, instead I’ll leave the seeds for the birds.

Apparently, the seeds might attract goldfinches, greenfinches and bullfinches but I know what birds to expect in my sparrow-dominated garden! I have sometimes seen a cloud of maybe thirty sparrows fly out of the hedge when disturbed.

Lavender has been cultivated for more than two thousand years for its many varied uses. The Romans brought it to Britain, having recognised its healing and antiseptic properties, and its name is thought to come from the Latin ‘lavare’ which means ‘to wash’. Today, as well as its use in soaps and lotions, its oils can improve sleep, boost mood, relieve pain and heal skin. I know some people even gather the flowers to mix with sugar to make lavender shortbread, but I tend to leave mine to the wildlife!

Away with the theories of fairies: It’s mushrooms JOHN WRIGHT is a naturalist and forager who lives in rural West Dorset. He has written eight books, four of which were for River Cottage. He wrote the award-winning Forager’s Calendar and in 2021 his Spotter’s Guide to Countryside Mysteries was published.

I hesitate to disappoint the romantically inclined, but the rings of mushrooms one sees in grass, and sometimes woodland, are not created by fairies. Sorry.

Everything in the past was a miracle of one sort or another so fairies or goblins dancing in a circle seemed as likely as anything else.

It was not until the late 18th century when the great botanist, physician and allround genius William Withering dug one up and

noticed the white fibres extending below the mushrooms to form a ring themselves. Mushroom rings are caused by mushrooms – or rather, the mass of fungal mycelium that is permanently in the soil whether the mushrooms are present or not.

But why a ring?

It is simply a pattern of growth. Spores produced by mushrooms located elsewhere settle in the soil and germinate. They produce fine threads called hyphae which will eventually join to form a mass of fungal matter called a mycelium. This obviously has to feed to grow at all, doing so by exuding enzymes into the soil that convert dead organic matter into sugars that can be

absorbed. In its extreme youth the mycelium will form a small disc.

This disc then grows outwards because there is (obviously) nowhere else to grow and dies out in the middle of the expanding disc as there is nothing left there to eat. This inevitably produces a ring of mycelium on which the mushrooms will eventually form.

You may have noticed that some such rings are visible as rings of lush grass, even in the absence of mushrooms.

This grass is just behind the advancing ring and caused by the release of nutrients from the feeding activity of the fungus.

For the mushroom-hunter such rings are helpful because they will often be

visible from some distance and at almost any time of year. They are even visible on Google Maps or Earth.

To get you started, zoom in to the grassy area at Portland Bill to the east of the car park and you will be able to see dozens of them.

One species at least, the very tasty Fairy Ring Champignon, Marasmius oreades, is visible as a ring of lush grass inside a ring of dead grass.

At barely an inch high it would have difficulty spreading its spores to the four winds in tall grass so, taking no prisoners, it simply kills it by releasing hydrogen cyanide into the soil.

In the same way as a green screen is used to highlight the human skin in movies, the colour blue stands out on beaches. Yeah, it’s a bit odd as the sky and sea are blue (ideally) but on the ACTUAL surface of the beach there is little blue save the blue of pottery shards or sea glass.

If you just have a wander and spot a shard colourside-up that is very lucky.

As most times when one finds a shard you turn it over only to find it is white and plain on both sides.

But occasionally you get pattern and a story.

Years ago I found a shard with a picture of part of Bristol suspension bridge. I googled it and found out all sorts of interesting things. I put it for sale on a Facebook site specifically for selling shards with a potted history. A New Yorker and teacher in engineering bought it and said she intended to have it made into a piece of jewellery.

When you sell beachcombing items its expected that you put a coin by the item for scale, I have used an American coin here as the US is where most buyers seem to hail from. It is also good practice to take photos of the shards on both sides. It didn’t sell for much but being stuck at home it was just nice to

make connections out in the big world and dip into architectural history too.

I also find pottery shards in the remnants of old middens (small pre-council rubbish dumps). As you can see by the blue pottery shards in my hand they are pretty but with jagged edges. Not nearly so sought after as the smooth edges crafted by the sea which

look and feel so much better in jewellery or art of any kind.

On Facebook groups the Queen of Shards is Wendy’s Scottish Beach Finds. Warning: After looking at Wendy’s finds it is normal to feel green with envy and search Rightmove for East Scotland.

The hunt is the biggest

delight for me. Only rarely do I get stuck into a project. I find it hard to commit my beautiful wild shards into a permanent situation like a framed picture. Sometimes I just get a plate and tinker with making different animals and scenes but I usually prefer to leave the pieces loose to make something new another day.

It’s all about the planets during July Kevin Quinn is a Dark Sky Custodian for the Cranborne Chase Dark Sky Reserve who lives in Piddletrenthide.

Read his blog at theastroguy.wordpress.com As I discussed in my last piece (WDM issue 9), and even though we’re now past the solstice, the nights are still way too bright and short for stargazing, and the opportunities, although still there, are really only for those able to stay up late, or those up very early in the morning.

The early mornings throughout July are all about the planets.

All seven will be visible at the beginning of the month, just before dawn, with Venus initially very close to the Hyades star cluster in Taurus.

Mercury will gradually drop lower to the horizon as the days go by.

On the morning of July 22, the waning crescent moon will be just over a degree from the planet Uranus, with Mars only about six degrees to its right (that’s about the width of your three middle fingers held up at arm’s length).

The moon will continue its journey across the sky until the very thin waning crescent will meet up with Venus.

Mars and Uranus will likewise continue their respective journeys across the morning sky, until they pass around one degree (that’s about twice the diameter of the full moon) from each other on the morning of August 2.

SKY-WATCHING: Highlights of the summer sky

Night owls can continue to look forward to watching the Milky Way emerge as darkness falls.

The best time during July is either towards the beginning or during the last two weeks of the month, when the moon’s not around to spoil the show.

Look out for the red supergiant Antares low in the south in the constellation of Scorpius.

A likely supernova candidate (though probably not during our lifetimes), this massively bloated star absolutely dwarfs our sun.

The area around Scorpius and Sagittarius is absolutely full of open and globular star clusters, including one of my favourites: Messier 22.

approximately 500,000 stars, is visible to the naked eye, is the size of the full moon (about half a degree, or your extended little finger held at arm’s length), and is simply stunning in binoculars or a telescope.

There really is so much to see in the heart of the Milky Way at this time of year, that it really is worth the effort at least once during the summer. I’d recommend packing a barbecue, a flask of tea or coffee, and a couple of deckchairs and head down to Portland Bill, or West Bexington, Ringstead Bay, or the Isle of Purbeck viewpoint beyond Creech and make an evening of it.

If staying up late or getting up early isn’t for you, there’s always the moon

(July’s first quarter is on the 7th, full on the 13th, last quarter on the 20th and new again on the 28th), and noctilucent clouds to enjoy.

One final thing to look forward to, towards the end of July, is the return of planets to the evening sky, starting with Saturn, which will just clear the southeastern horizon around 9pm. I’ve missed the opportunity to observe the planets lately, and am looking forward to their return.

And sow to bed: Time to plan next year’s While enjoying summer displays, gardeners already have an eye on next year’s spectacle.

June and July are perfect months for sowing plants that will bloom next year, such as biennials. The word biennial is often confused with the similar sounding word biannual.

Biannual means twice yearly, whereas biennial means taking place every other year.

Biennial plants usually complete their life cycle over two (calendar) years.

Germinating the first and building sufficient reserves in their roots to fuel flowering the next, prior to death. Many plants are treated as biennials, but in truth they are short-lived perennials with potential to reward you with repeated flowers for several years.

Wallflowers and sweet William are good examples of these, trim them back after flowering and they will continue to delight the following year.

Dad and I used to grow thousands of wallflowers and sweet William in the 1980s, around June and July we would sow the seeds in long drills.

Then when large enough pull them up and transplant singularly after first

During the plant’s second year it can grow up to three metres tall on fertile soil, producing multiple heads of purple flowers attracting pollinators.

Once the plant dies in autumn, its architectural framework supports the seedheads through winter, allowing goldfinches to forage when food is scarce.

removing the growing tip to make them bush. In autumn, we would lift and bundle them in newspaper, usually by the dozen, and deliver to the sadly missed and incredibly aromatic James Foot’s shop in Dorchester.

Growing them in this way produced a much superior plant than when cultivation in containers with the bonus of no plastic or horticultural compost required. Last year, I was pleased to observe wallflowers sold in this traditional way at Poundbury Garden Centre.

The bright-purple or white blooms of honesty and its attractive papery, fullmoon-shaped seed heads look great in dried flower arrangements. It is a true biennial, producing its blooms in late spring and dying after seed set. Their seeds are best sown in situ, where they will flower the following year.

Foxgloves are interesting, in that in fertile soil they flower the year after sowing, but if the soil is very low in nutrients the plant delays flowering for several years until the plant has grown large enough to support blooming.

In so doing they create a water-tight seal that can hold up to 150ml of water at each leaf joint. These vertical temporary pools trap and drown caterpillars and other insects and provide a home for microorganisms to flourish.

There is also evidence the plant gains sustenance from this soup, and in so doing has carnivorous tendencies.

Culture Bridport Art Society has launched a dynamic programme of illustrated monthly talks given by nationally acclaimed experts for the new season from September.

From an introduction to Art Nouveau Glass to master masonry, architecture and from art in garden-making, there is a heady and delicious array of talks spanning many genres of art.

And throughout the year the committee will be organising outings and exhibitions.

Bridport Art Society was formed in the early 1990s as The West Dorset Decorative and Fine Art Society which was part of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS).

Several years ago there was a national rebranding, and the group was renamed Bridport Art Society.

The society is run by a small group of happy volunteers and meet at Bridport Town Hall on the third Thursday of the month at 2pm from September until June.

New members are always welcome and the society offers people the chance to make new friends.

Described as a ‘wonderfully wacky new show that is both entertaining and enthralling’ Brainfools will perform Lucky Pigeons twice in the

open-air for Dorset’s Artsreach in August.

Lucky Pigeons revolves a young businessman who loses his job and takes his frustrations out on a group of pigeons, only to later be turned into a pigeon himself.

Art club’s exhibition makes comeback after three years Sherborne Art Club’s Open Art Exhibition is returning after a three-year gap from July 23-31.

First held in 1931, this popular, highly regarded annual fine art exhibition last took place in 2018.

Can they refuse to hire me because of my age?

I recently applied for a job at a local pub which offered National Minimum Wage. I did a short interview and at the end the manager asked me for some documents and also how old I was.

After telling her I was 25 she told me she would be in touch, but it would be unlikely I’d get the job because they wouldn’t be able to afford to pay me the required wage. She said she would prefer to hire someone younger. Is this legal?

Nobody should be asking you how old you are in a job interview. Being 25, you’re entitled to the National Living Wage. On the Citizens Advice website there are full details of the wages people are entitled to by law. But these rules shouldn’t mean employers avoid hiring people because of how old they are. That’s known as ‘direct age discrimination’

in the Equality Act 2010.

You’re also protected by the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, which says employers can’t not hire you (and they can’t fire you) because your age means you’re entitled to a higher rate.

We have a lot of information on our website about what to do if you’re being treated unfairly when applying for a job. If you’ve been discriminated against, there are steps you can take to either get compensation or convince the person to give you a job.

Make a note of what happened as soon as you can – noting down exactly

what you were asked and any other remarks the interviewer made. This will be useful as evidence later.

Next, you should write a letter of complaint to the employer.

Keep a copy of this letter for your own records.

There’s advice on the Citizens Advice website on what this letter should include and you can also speak to an adviser at your local Citizens Advice to get help writing it.

If the letter doesn’t get an outcome you’re happy with, you could take the employer to an employment tribunal.

You’ll need as much evidence of discrimination

as possible. Evidence should include the job advert, the job description, your notes about what was said at the interview and any contact you’ve had with the employer since like your complaint letter.

Remember that you only have three months minus one day from the date that the ‘discriminatory act’ (in this case, the comments in your interview) happened to start tribunal proceedings. You do this by contacting the government organisation Acas and telling them that you intend to bring a claim.

Constituency issues

with West Dorset MP Chris Loder

Trying to save Hardy from the chop Last week, I read that the poetry of several of our greatest writers, including West Dorset’s own Thomas Hardy, was being removed from the GCSE English syllabus by the OCR Examination Board in measures supposed to improve the ‘diversity’ of the syllabus. I feel this sets a worrying precedent, not just for the education of young people today, but of West Dorset long-term.

Thomas Hardy was the most ardent champion of West Dorset and its people in recent history. He was a true maverick for his time, challenging the taboos and inequalities he saw in Victorian society, giving a rare voice to the rural

working classes of places like Dorset, and especially rare for his time, giving a powerful voice to women – single mothers who were particularly marginalised in Victorian society, through the many female heroines in his novels.

The fact that Thomas Hardy’s work, alongside the likes of Wilfred Owen and Philip Larkin have been seemingly dropped in favour of more modern and diverse content, suggests a worrying shift away from the staples of English literature.

West Dorset benefits greatly from Hardy’s legacy.

We are fortunate to

have the Hardy Players and the Thomas Hardy Society based in and around our county town, contributing immensely to the culture of Dorset. We have Hardy’s birthplace at Bockhampton, Hardy’s house at Max Gate and the many landscapes and settings he described in his work. All of which bring in tourism from around the world and greatly enrich our county.

All of this is sustained by education and propagation of his works in schools. To undermine Hardy’s legacy in schools will no doubt affect his legacy in West Dorset, and this is what I am pushing back against as West Dorset’s MP and

have written to the Secretary of State for Education accordingly.

I also wish to thank the many people across West Dorset that marked Armed Forces Day on the 25th June: a celebration of the service of all those in the Armed Forces. Earlier in June, the 14th also marked the 40-year anniversary of the conclusion of the Falklands War. It was a great pleasure to meet with Falklands veterans with serving members of the Armed Forces at an event in Yeovilton to commemorate this significant event in our history and to remember all those who lost their lives through the conflict.

Politics

Future of libraries is well worth reading up about After a decade of cuts in funding it’s no wonder that the future of Dorset’s libraries remains uncertain at best. So far what we’ve seen could be described as managed decline. Fewer new books are bought, opening hours have been reduced and a number of small libraries are now largely run by volunteers.

This autumn a further round of public consultation is being planned. Work carried out so far has identified the libraries in areas of most need – and therefore more likely to be protected from future cuts.

In the top ten of the list is the Weymouth Library and Learning Centre, followed

At the other end of the table comes Corfe Mullen, Lytchett Matravers, Verwood, West Moors, Upton, Wyke Regis, Crossways, Wimborne, Lyme Regis and Beaminster.

The existing library strategy is more than ten years old and nobody doubts it needs to be replaced by a new strategy which will guide the future, delivering services in line with needs of residents.

Among the findings so far is the need for libraries to be more than just about books – to offer places for people to meet, to work, collaborate and receive advice, including advice and information on physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Talks have also been held about the potential of using some library spaces for the new ‘family hubs’ to be run by health and social services. A Dorset Council report shows that since 2016 physical use of libraries has declined by up to 30 per cent while online use, for ebooks and audio books, has risen by over 350 per cent and is said to be continuing to increase as the country comes out of the pandemic.

The report said: “We have seen new trends in accessing content, events and activities online and although people are returning to preferred ‘in-person’ activities and events, we remain aware that the online library requirement must be embedded in our future thinking. The research revealed opportunities for library services to have greater impact on communities within Dorset.

“The research and engagement process revealed the willingness and appetite of council and community services to work more closely with the library service to achieve shared priorities and meet community needs.”

Let’s start talking about working together In my last column I opened up the topic of communication. Then my focus was communication with the residents and voters of West Dorset. I would now like to open a second dimension, that of communication between local political parties.

Traditionally politicians from different parties have seen themselves to be in total competition with each other – dismissing everything the others say as blatantly wrong and going out of their way to find reasons to criticise them.

But is it time that we started doing politics differently? Is this confrontational method of politics past its sell by date? I think it is, and for a number of reasons. There is

growing support for some form of proportional representation (PR), and once the Labour Party come fully on board it should only be a matter of time before we ditch our unfair ‘First Past the Post’ system. For practical reasons PR will make us to do things differently, not least because it will be very unlikely that any party will gain an absolute majority. This will force politicians to cooperate. Government and decision making will need to start reflecting the wide variety of views that exist

across the country.

Negotiation and compromise will be key words. Politicians will need to make genuine attempts to understand alternative viewpoints.

There’s also a philosophical reason to ditch our traditional confrontational approach to politics. Put simply, there is no definitively right answer or any correct solution to any problem we face. Arguing that there is will achieve nothing. Instead we could develop and agree a clear vision of the end we want to achieve, and then work-out the best means of achieving that end. To do this politicians will not only need to genuinely listen to what others are saying (and do their best to actually

understand them), they will need to accept that their own position may not be the best and needs changing.

Could I suggest that we start working on communication between the different political groupings in West Dorset, perhaps through regular ‘conferences’ on particular issues. The aim of these meetings would be to get to know and understand each other’s perspective, not to win a debate. I don’t know exactly how such conferences would work, but finding out would be part or the learning process. Could I invite my fellow political columnists to consider finding a way to make our constituency a flagship for a new style of politics.

Time to learn the lessons of union history In July people from across the UK and some from around the world will descend on Tolpuddle to remember George and James Loveless, James Hammett, James Brine, Thomas Standfield and his son John: Farm labourers transported to Australia for the crime of forming a trade union.

In Dorchester Shire Hall, you can stand in the very cell where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were held whilst awaiting their fate.

As you read their story, I guarantee that you will shake your head in disbelief at how they were treated.

We enjoy the legacy of all those who stood together

Without trades unions we would not have had a shorter working week, safer workplaces, paid holidays, sick pay, maternity and paternity leave, equal pay legislation, as well as legislation against discrimination.

Sadly, we rarely hear about the work of unions unless there is a major dispute.

The vast majority of negotiations are settled without the need to withdraw labour.

Unionised workplaces tend to have better pay and conditions but they also

have higher productivity.

On rare occasions when a settlement is not possible, unions have to jump through complex legal hoops to take industrial action.

The rail strike could be just the start of a series of strikes in the public sector.

The heroes of just a year or so ago are now being branded by the government as overpaid, resistant to change, politically motivated and, above all, threatening the economic stability of the country.

For 19th century farm labourers, trying to live on ten shillings a week, or a 21st century rail worker, nurse, teacher or firefighter, there comes a point at which you have to defend what you have.

With inflation currently at

9.1% and expected to rise to 11%, wages, in real terms, are falling.

Families are struggling and unions are right to try to protect them.

The government is throwing fuel onto the anger being felt right across the country.

They are seeking to roll back those hard-won improvements that took unions and the Labour Party many decades to win.

Maybe the government should learn the lessons of history.

In the 19th century, the unjust actions of the courts backed by newly introduced laws did not stop the growth of trades unions. It helped create the very conditions for their growth.

Walking West Dorset

FROME VALLEY TRAIL: 7th WALK This is a relatively short walk of a little under four miles and is mostly flat and easy going. You’ll get extensive views over the vast water meadows without paddling in them (as I used to do). Start at the former Swan Inn (which used to serve a good pint!) at Fordington.

Cross the road and bridge then turn left and head east, downstream, alongside the river. Lubbecke Way is on your right. Mostly the path is well used and mown but there’s one short section which is rumpled and will soon be nettly so, if you’re a wimp or wearing shorts, divert onto the adjacent Tarmac.

When you come to a double arched bridge turn right to join St George’s Road next to allotments.

Head east under the long bridge carrying Dorchester bypass. Continue through Fordington’s industrial estate and the massive

water works until you get to the town dump. Here you join a bridleway on the lefthand side and carry on alongside a small stream at the edge of a large field.

Eventually you join the road at Frome Farm, West Stafford. Turn left and

follow the road northwards for half a mile, trying to keep count of all the bridges you cross!

When you get to the large bridge at Lower Bockhampton, bearing a ‘Transportation Plate’, turn left and follow

Bockhampton Path westward for a mile, although you might like to take brief diversions to look at the lake at Kingston Maurward or the church at Stinsford.

Again you pass under a bridge with the bypass. It was around here many years ago that I saw an otter being hounded to death.

When you reach the road, turn left to Greys Bridge, then left again and back to The Swan.

We have had some glorious weather recently and while sitting under a large oak tree, taking advantage of the shade this wonderful tree provided in our new site, we were visited by squirrels, some young woodpeckers and of course the gardener’s best friend the robin, and what a friendly chap he was – even hopping into the rear of the open van just to see what was there.

The peace, tranquility and relaxation was perfect.

The oak tree’s energies provide a sense of belonging to the place, permanence and stability, a firm grounding to focus the mind and the spirit and give the body the chance to absorb the solid strong energies, providing us with the strength to continue

with the task at hand.

I also noticed a wild honeysuckle growing in the hedge around the tree, and the energies from this wonderful plant assist in balancing your own energies, awaken the mind to the spirituality of your surroundings.

The dappled light shining through the oak onto the honeysuckle and the fragrance of the flowers brought a sense of harmony and contentment to my total being, mind, body and spirit.

Energy healing is truly remarkable but unfortunately far too many people are unable to enjoy the therapy that the garden, plants and the great outdoors supplies.

We can however make the

most of what we have, whether it’s a window box or a garden.

The smallest of plants can still provide us with energy healing – just a few primroses and pansies in a window box can help to provide inner peace, restore your natural rhythm, and raise the spirit of your soul.

During this hot, dry period watering is a must for most gardeners, and it is also very important to keep ourselves hydrated to avoid heat stroke and dehydration. Water has a high healing energy content.

Heat just sucks the energy out of you when working in hot conditions, but by replenishing you water levels your energy levels

rise as well. This has nothing to do with the energy derived from food – it is to do with the energy healing within the water.

More people are suffering from anxiety these days.

Fennel is a good plant to help to bring calmness to the mind and focus your thoughts.

Fennel likes full sun, will grow in most soil types and is of most interest in the garden April to December.

There are also a lot of culinary uses as well, it can be used in salads, goes well with salmon, and when braised it complements scallops.

Fennel helps with depression, anxiety and is also good for the digestive system.

When mixed in a smudging stick with thyme and lavender it is said to help psychic purification and provide strength and understanding.

If the seed heads are left they provide a good food source for wild life through the autumn.

being inspired by a beautiful rainbow time. Lauren was terminally ill. She had the most incredible spirit, a deep religious faith, a young family and a dear, supportive, traumatised husband, Brett.

Lauren wanted me to write about her life, include a copy of the family tree, talk about her values, describe comic incidents, include poems and pictures she had

painted, sayings from her ‘fridge door and produce her legacy.

She also asked me to write letters to each of her children separately, and to her husband.

The letters were impossible for her to write, but by talking about what was important I was able to compose thoughtful, careful, letters full of love

and praise and practical tips for Brett about how to run the family home, and for the children, full of wisdom, love and kindness.

When I handed over the legacy, I gave Lauren a small crystal angel and hung it with invisible thread from the curtain pole above the picture window that looked over the garden.

Lauren clapped her hands together softly as the angel threw rainbows over the walls and set off prisms from the display cabinet of glass animals and crystal trinkets. Lauren closed her eyes and smiled and a rainbow danced briefly across her eyelids.

Now, I always think of Lauren when there’s a rainbow.

Venue of dreams thanks to two-year

“You’ve nailed it!”

Just one of the compliments received as proud owners Simon Brooks and James Maidment showcased the latest renovations at their venue, Abbots Court Rural Retreat.

The duo took on the large rambling Victorian farmhouse, set in six acres of grounds at Winterbourne Kingston, in 2019. It was just before the pandemic hit and, at the time, the property was operating as a bed and breakfast. But, said Simon: “I’d always wanted to run a venue and could 100 per cent see the potential of this one.”

Unbeknown to the businessman, whose other companies include Seventa Events, James was also interested in acquiring Abbots Court.

Simon said: “James was viewing it separately.

“We were already friends, but literally bumped into each other on viewings and said: ‘What are you doing here?’.”

After their negotiations for the property were accepted, ambitious plans were drawn up for Abbots Court to become a luxury house for hire and as a wedding venue.

They included building a wedding walled garden, converting the Victorian stables into a beautiful ceremony room and creating a glass fronted and oak framed wedding

pavilion capable of seating 120 guests. The main house and gardens were also lined up for improvement.

Simon said: “The house itself was in good condition but the stables were derelict and the walled garden overgrown.”

While the house, and its nine bedrooms and seven bathrooms over three floors sleeping up to 22, proved popular for exclusive hire for events and staycations, work began on the renovations.

And now, after 24 months of hard graft, the project is complete with the results on display at two open days.

Simon, 36, said: “When

we first began renovations we couldn’t have dreamt of the time and effort we would commit to this project. Two years later and we have been absolutely blown away by the responses we’ve received. It’s made all the days worth it.”

Feedback from the open days included: n “Sometimes places, buildings or settings just take your breath away – and today that happened on all three levels. A very special, magical place is now available for all to enjoy, and my goodness, what a place.” n “Wow, wow, wow.

What a beautiful place. The most perfect setting to get married.”

n “Absolutely loved this place. Real Soho Farmhouse feel. Looking forward to booking an event there soon.”

Having just opened for weddings, there are already 20 booked in for this year. Numbers will be strictly limited to 30 weddings annually.

Simon said: “We are an exclusive use venue.

“We’re not interested in just cramming in as many weddings as possible.

“We want these to be weekend long experiences that people remember for lifetimes.”

No figure has been disclosed for the cost of all of the renovation works but Simon conceded it ran “well into six figures.”

“At a time when my other businesses were severely impacted and paused by the pandemic, this was an amazing project to really sink my teeth into.

“I love renovating properties and bringing an idea to life.

“James and I are incredibly proud of what has been achieved and we work really well together.

“The comments and feedback have been absolutely amazing.”

Simon and James, pictured, have even managed to open a second sister venue, Almer Manor

at Almer.

Following refurbishment last year, it is available for hire this summer and beyond.

It includes eight bedrooms, four bathrooms, a dining room to seat 20 guests, country kitchen, large drawing room and a cosy snug.

The grounds include an outdoor tennis court, games room and wood fired hot tub in the walled garden.

New chapter for firm in takeover

The managing director of a Dorchester company says it has opened a new chapter after being acquired for an undisclosed sum.

Shaftesbury-based Darren Taylor Holdings Ltd has bought Dorset Aluminium Products Ltd. Founded in 1971, the business is a subcontract anodiser.

It employs about 30 staff and provides a full inhouse manufacturing, metal spinning and finishing service.

During the pandemic, the company finished vital pieces needed in covid testing machines.

Until recently Dorset Aluminium Products, based on the Poundbury West Trading Estate, was owned by Tim Perry, who retired in 2007, and Noel Hope, who remains in the business as managing director.

There will be no change to the running of the company which has an annual turnover of £1.5m.

Darren Taylor Holdings also owns Aftech

Engineering in Swindon, which specialises in all areas of metal fabrications including laser cutting, welding, drilling, and sawing.

Darren said: “I am very pleased to have negotiated a successful deal with Tim and Noel. Dorset Aluminium Products is a solid, successful engineering business that fits nicely with our other engineering firm.

“I am impressed with the business Tim and Noel have built and am pleased to be part of its future.”

Noel added: “It was a pleasure working with Tim for so many years.

“I am proud of the company we built, the staff we employ and the products we produce.

Working together as a team, bonding Bridport FC manager Edgar Marcu has been talking to the West Dorset Magazine, about his passion for football and his hopes for the 2022/23 season.

Having arrived in the UK from his native Romania in 2017 with just £20 to his name, Edgar is excited about the latest chapter in his football career, and is looking forward to bringing good times back to St Mary’s Field.

Edgar’s first aim is to ‘build a family’.

Edgar said: “This is the most important thing for me, that we are like a family.

“I have already built a nice relationship with the club and the players, but I want this to continue. We have all been involved with painting the stands and sorting out the goal nets.

“We played a practice match yesterday involving the first team and reserves, as I wanted to test players in different positions to understand their strengths and versatility.

“Afterwards, I texted many of the players, just to check they’re okay and find out how they’re feeling about things.

“It’s a hard job but we have to get these things right.

“Building a family is the key. I achieved this with Paulton Rovers and they were so sorry to see me go because we were such a

tight unit.”

Following last year’s relegation campaign, the Bees are looking to bounce back, and the manager has targeted a return to the Western Premier League at

some confidence in the squad and it’s my job to get the best out of them as individuals.

“There are a lot of good teams in the division so it won’t be an easy job, but

n Bridport will be competing in the South West Peninsula League East in the 2022/23 season.

The Bees’ league campaign kicks off on Saturday, August 6 with a trip to Ivybridge Town, followed by back-to-back home matches against Honiton (August 9) and Crediton United (August 13).

The team have six friendly matches throughout July, with the possibility of a seventh being arranged against Weymouth. Please check website for details. the first time of asking.

Edgar said: “We have to be optimistic about promotion next season.

“It will be hard work – very hard – but we have

Edgar worked in tandem with outgoing manager Shaun Annets for the final

eight matches of last season.

Talking of his progress so far, Edgar said: “I am pleased, but not pleased.

“We have brought in some good players and I have started to build a good team. Being 100% pleased in football is not possible though, we will always have things to learn. Even top teams like Manchester City and Liverpool are constantly learning and looking to improve, so football managers are never totally satisfied!”

Although Edgar understandably did not want to dwell on last season, he was quick to pay tribute to his predecessor.

“Shaun took over the running of the team at a very difficult time, and he was 100% committed to doing the best he could with the group of players he had.

“I take my hat off to him for the job he did.”

Commercial success in his native Romania has helped to shape Edgar’s management skills.

“I learned a lot from my background. I worked for T Mobile in Romania and was really successful.

“I used to sell door-to-door which was hard work and I became a top seller for T Mobile, before moving into management.

“I learned so much about how to lead people and

help them to be good performers. I went on many courses and have transferred my skills from a telecoms provider in Romania to a football pitch in Dorset. Although it is different, it is important to focus on the same things as a manager.”

He has learned from mistakes too, and is refreshingly honest.

Edgar was banned from driving in 2018, lost his job as a result, and struggled to find work.

Edgar sees this as a turning point and takes up the story.

“I woke up one morning in 2018 and spent £180 on a Level 1 coaching course. I didn’t have much money at

the time, just £15-£20 each week to live on from my savings.

“Nobody wanted to give me a job, but then I found work in a warehouse.

“When I was travelling to Chapel-en-le-Frith on the train, and when I was moving boxes around the warehouse, I would listen to the Champions League anthem. It inspired me and I now feel that I am on the right pathway with my football management career.

“You have to believe in everything you do. I believe that you have to learn from your mistakes too.”

Edgar said: “I wrote them an open letter, saying that they have to accept me or they will miss out on a very good coach. I am very lucky to have the opportunity.

“Many of my friends have tried to get on the course and have not been successful.

“I am looking forward to working with current and former professional footballers, and think I will learn so much.”

Edgar touches on his approach to helping his players to improve. “It is like learning to drive and making the change from conscious to sub-conscious competence.

“At the moment, most of the players are thinking about every move they make on the pitch, but eventually it will become second nature to them.

“That is what I am aiming to achieve. We have to work on many aspects of their game, when we are in possession, out of possession or in transition – there are different skills to be learned.

“We learn about high press, mid-block, how to play out of defence, how to regain possession, low defending, emergency defending, everything.

“As individuals, the players need to improve their skills in all areas until they can do it without thinking, and we must learn together as a team.”

Sport Dorset Cricket League Premier Division Sherborne CC 1st XI 202/8 (50 Overs) Christchurch CC 1st XI 200 All Out (37 Overs) Sherborne CC won by 2 runs – Sherborne CC 1t XI 19 points; Christchurch CC 1st XI 11 points Sherborne Firsts held their nerve to win a thriller against evenly-matched opponents, Christchurch, dismissing the hosts just two runs shy of their total.

With one wicket remaining and just three runs required, Emlyn Kuhn pinned number 10, Jamie Squire, in front, to complete a remarkable end to a see-saw contest. with plenty of overs remaining in the game.

Batting first, Sherborne posted a competitive total, with opener Ryan Monk top-scoring with 44, before being dismissed courtesy of a sensational onehanded catch on the square leg boundary. Sherborne’s middle order kept the score ticking along, with good contributions from Emlyn Kuhn (25) and Tim Durston (32), before some late hitting from Tom Harris (31 not out) helped his side to a respectable total of 202.

Down on the up as Beaminster are beaten in thriller in the 35th over as the Charlton Down bowling options became more limited.

The pair added 91, with Moss plundering 84 not out,

including two huge sixes.

James Edmunds came in at the death and heaved a six over the boundary as he helped Adam Moss bring the Beaminster innings to a

close on 252 for 6, with the weather starting to look ominous.

Charlton Down’s reply was interrupted by some heavy thunderstorms, and the Beaminster bowlers struggled to find consistency with their line and length, with Joshi’s unorthodox style proving particularly tricky.

After an early breakthrough, Joshi and Roger Frapwell took the score to 52 for 1 after just seven overs.

Park shuffled his pack to try and counter Joshi’s maverick style, but the runs kept flowing and the hosts brought up their 100 inside 18 overs. Golledge (1-20) eventually broke the partnership of 138 as he had Frapwell finely caught in the deep by Will Moss for 39.

This brought Nick Voss to the crease who continued to take the attack to the visiting bowlers. Joshi completed a fine century, before finally being dismissed by Ollie Bareham for a scintillating innings of 116 which include 17 fours and two sixes.

But it was left to Voss to see the hosts home, striking the winning runs with just three balls to go, to finish on 71 not out.

Quality bowlers for club’s tournament Lyme Regis’ mayor Michaela Ellis delivered the first wood at Lyme Bowls Club as it hosted its 64th Open Tournament. The official opening of the week-long tournament signalled the start of some high quality bowling, bathed in beautiful sunshine.

The popular event, a highlight in the local bowling calendar, attracted players from across West Dorset to compete in four categories across

six days of fierce competition.

Simon Doig emerged triumphant in the mens’ singles category, with Sally Batt scooping the individual ladies’ title.

The trophy for the open pairs went to Carl Stephens and Steve Pomeroy. Open triple winners were Joe Wahon, Roy Burnett and Dan Steadman.

The tournament was run by club secretary Sue Rowe, ably assisted by

Lesley Broom. The club would also like to thank greenkeepers, Barry Rattenbury and Steve Pomeroy, for producing superb conditions for bowling, and catering officer Avril Sherring and her helpers who kept everyone fed throughout the six days.

Special thanks also go to bar manager Barry Rattenbury, who with his staff kept the thirsty players and supporters well-watered.

Mud-phobic Tria Stebbing lives on the outskirts of Sherborne. She keeps sheep, is working on her first book, and works in a village school.

At last the weather took a turn for the better and we made the impulsive decision to cut the two smaller paddocks to get the baling season started.

The forecast looked good with at least a week of dry weather.

We bale the old-fashioned way, we mow, we turn, we bale.

The machinery is old and has given many years of reliable service so it can be a bit touch and go as to whether it all works to plan.

As smallholders we have day jobs so have to do the farming in the evening and at weekends, so we really do depend on the forecast being right for our brief opportunity to do the work.

Mowing went to plan, and the tractor did a great job and made light work of the paddocks, the next day it was time to start tedding the hay.

The tedder or turner fits on the tractor and aerates and spreads the hay so it can dry out.

Drying conditions were good as there was a warm breeze and it was clearly a mistake to be slightly smug that the weather was

Making hay while the sun shines: Oh, here’s the rain great, and it was all drying. The following evening the sky became grey and overcast, I checked my weather app and yes, there it was, rain.

Just to the north of us up

All hands to deck, and a call-out to friends and family ensured that there were enough of us to make a start on the first paddock.

It is a thankless task walking behind the baler throwing the bales up onto the trailer, they seem to get heavier and heavier.

The weather stayed kind

and we were able to bale the two paddocks in good time.

It was a late night, but we got it all back and safely stashed in the barn, and it smells lovely.

We have more to cut when the next dry few days arrive and seem this year to be inundated with grass everywhere we look.

The lambs have taken well to being weaned and have formed a lovely little flock, away from their mums their personalities shine through, and we have some right characters this year.

Kalen has turned into a head butter and now takes a run-up to get you in the kneecaps, KP was the runt of the litter and is a pocket rocket, she eats everything

and anything, including my trousers, to keep growing with the rest.

King has a presence about him, and we have our fingers crossed that he is a future champion, he holds himself well.

Kaiser Chief has his eye on the ladies, and Keane has his eyes on the boys.

In a week or so they can re-join the main flock as the ewes’ milk has dried up.

Our main concern in this topsy turvy weather remains the risk of flystrike, they love the warm weather with a few days of rain and we are on constant fly watch.

It has been a busy week, but it is great to sit back and know that baling has started.

Farm has a unique approach to milk

Chloe, who has a degree in equine science and has been a British No1 sidesaddle champion, said: “The way our cows are cared for really shows in the taste of the milk, but we also ensure the fats in the milk retain their flavour with the

pasteurising process – I believe we’re one of only four farms using the technique. Most places quickly pasteurise their milk at much higher temperatures, but that affects the taste of the fats.”

Alongside keeping the shed stocked up with milk, milkshakes and other produce (you can also find The West Dorset Magazine here!), Chloe works a halfday in town, and rides her award-winning horses and

exercises her little Shetland (or Sh*tland, as she’s a bit of a minx).

Cow Pony, so named for his distinctive black and white coat, has won numerous rosettes with Chloe. He was national sidesaddle horse of the year 2018. He is Chloe’s favourite, and boasts his own Facebook page.

She also has a favourite cow, whose face was made into the Eweleaze Farm logo.

Tilly is an excellent milker, but she also enjoys a chin scratch and is a major nuzzler. Many of the herd enjoy human touch – a testament to their owners making sure they are kept as comfortable as possible, with regular ‘holidays’ from milking and a special pasture to recover in, next to the house, if they injure themselves.

The herd are all mixed breeds, with Friesian, Jersey, Montbéliarde, Fleckvieh and Swedish red in the mix, giving a multihued group. The family also keep a small herd of pet Highlands and have recently welcomed a rare ‘blonde’ calf. They can be found in the field next to the vending shed.

The family gain extra knowledge through linking up with other farmers and experts via the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), and encourage their staff to do so too.

Future plans include increasing the arable crops grown on the farm to feed the cows, including lupins and lucerne.

Biosecurity reminder after disease alert the clock to do various tests to confirm if it was or wasn’t foot and mouth disease. The major outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 2001 is still very fresh in everyone’s memories, so although the farming community didn't panic there was a rippling of fear that crossed over all of us. We were fortunate in West Dorset, we didn't have an outbreak here however there were cases just over the border in Somerset and Devon. It got very, very close.

Thankfully the tests came back negative. It was confirmed that the pig didn’t have foot and mouth disease. We all breathed a sigh of relief and then carried on as normal. It gave us all a reminder of the importance of good biosecurity and I think we all looked at that we do on farm once again.

Let’s hope that we never hear the words confirmed outbreak of foot and mouth disease again.

On Monday, July 4, after months of building work, diligent planning and a herculean team effort, we will be working from our new premises. Our new base, just three miles away from Evershot, will be in the old BBC transmitting station on Rampisham Downs.

Synergy has been based at Evershot since it was founded in 2009 and the buildings have served us well.

However, as the business has developed we need an updated location for our staff to work from. After many years lying dormant, the building has been purchased by a local developer and we will be taking up residency in one part.

We hope this will give us enhanced facilities for our staff as well as for any clients that visit the practice for training and meetings.

We have been fortunate to have been involved in the design of the new development, so we hope we will have a fitting building to see us through the next stage of Synergy’s journey.

All contact numbers for the business will remain the same. We very much hope we get the opportunity to have an open evening later in the autumn.

We’re on the move to our new HQ, so join our club member of the Synergy team, we drew up plans for our very own Synergy Smallholder Club. From the start, the goal of the club was to create an ‘addon’ to the already holistic veterinary care available at the practice, a space where, alongside the veterinary input, knowledge could be shared, questions asked and relationships built within a supportive smallholder-focused community.

It has been so exciting to see the club come to

fruition and share in the growth of our members’ smallholdings and the increasing joy that comes from more knowledge, connections and assurance in the enterprises they started. We love to be encouraged by the success stories in the newsletters, have a laugh at some of the more challenging roles our Smallholder Team undertake – like Matt Board shearing sheep under attack from horse flies and an over-zealous smallholder in charge of swatting them before they bit.

Our club continues to inspire potential new interests, such as the benefits bees bring to a holding. Experiencing many relationships that have developed over the last 10 years, we know it is down to the mutual enthusiasm and support between members and our Smallholder Team. To celebrate we have an event planned on August 15, at our new Rampisham base.
