Sport Youngsters urged to give rugby a try

sport@westdorsetmag.co.uk Budding rugby stars will be having fun in Dorchester over Easter, as the Rugbytots play programme returns to the town from Monday, April 11-14. The Easter camp, taking place at Sawmill Lane, is run by Gareth Turnbull, who is offering free sessions to children whose families are in receipt of benefit-related free school meals. The popular programme, whose students include the children of England rugby captain Courtney Lawes, is aimed at youngsters aged from two to seven, and Gareth is promising that all participants can look forward to a healthy and fulfilling experience as they enjoy ‘fun games and build team play skills’. Wales rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards is a big fan, and said: “Learning the basics and coordination as well as playing as a team are vitally important at that young age. I wish Gareth every success with Rugbytots.” Gareth said: “We will give them skills in a new sport, a big boost of self-esteem and help them build team skills, finishing each day with a substantial, healthy meal. “We have very high standards, and invest a huge amount into our coaching. Rugbytots coaches absolutely love their job. Classes need to be best they can be every time, full of fun, energy and positivity, and our lead coaches have that amazing natural ability to get young children to take part. “The most rewarding element is helping children overcome their challenges. This is a powerful motivator and often comes up with foster children and children with special educational needs, where we really see the impact of our coaching and the children’s hunger to learn. Teaching them to play as a team, and celebrating all achievements is important, no matter how small they might seem.” The camps enable children to be active, play fun rugby games, brush up on their kicking, passing and catching skills, and learn to play as a team. A typical day will include stretches, skills, games, a match, crafts and make and take, along with a healthy lunch. Places usually cost £90 and the sessions will run from 9am to 1pm each day.
