The Winter family purchased the theater and performed an intense renovation, including projection, sound and seating, with the gem being their luxury theater which includes powered leather recliners. Little Crow Golf Course has been a part of the Spicer – New London community for over 51 years. We continue to strive to be one of the premier places to golf and dine in western Minnesota. This golf course started out as a small-town 9 hole golf course, and then shortly after expanded to 18 holes. Ridgewater College Adds New Programs, Expands Others Pandemic Did Not Stop Progress

Ridgewater College has always been committed to meeting the needs of students and industry. While the pandemic may have forced some schools to pause new initiatives, the opposite happened at Ridgewater. In the past year, the college has added several new programs. They’ve also expanded delivery options for other programs. The result is increased opportunities for students at both the Willmar and Hutchinson campuses, as well as online. “It is critically important that Ridgewater continues to adapt to the evolving needs of our students and industry partners,” said Dr. Craig Johnson, President of Ridgewater College. New programs added at the Willmar campus include an Agronomy Applicator program, as well as Electrical Technology, which provides a path to become an electrician. The popular Massage Therapy, Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy programs in Willmar have expanded to Hutchinson, increasing access to allied health programs. Both campuses are offering new education transfer pathways designed to transfer to four-year colleges. Pathways include special education, elementary education and early childhood education. While the college has long offered an early childhood program, the addition of the transfer pathway provides more options for either employment or continuing their education with a bachelor’s degree – it’s the best of both worlds.

Online opportunities continue to grow. The Agriculture department now offers a fully online Poultry Management certificate, in addition to expanding the AgriBusiness degree online and on campus. Professional Photography has shifted to online delivery, with optional in-person labs at both campuses and equipment to check out. Photography also added a new Photography and Design degree to prepare students to work in business, marketing, and social media. Ridgewater repeated its ranking as the #1 community college in Minnesota by niche.com and will reopen campuses this fall with in-person classes and activities. THE EARLY YEARS Ken Larson was just 25 when the first Slumberland store opened in Richfield, Minnesota. It was 1967: a movie ticket cost $1.25, a gallon of gas was 33 cents, and a Slumberland “21-piece King-sized Mattress Package” (which included a mattress, two box springs, a frame, a headboard, sheets, a blanket, pillows, and a bedspread) cost $299. Slumberland was established on a new trend in mattresses—the “sleep store,” that specialized in, well, sleep. Prior to the sleep store, people could only purchase mattresses at furniture or department stores, and there were few options. Couples slept on two twin-sized beds (think Lucy and Ricky in the famous television program, I love

Lucy) or together in full-sized beds, which still today offer each person a sleeping space equivalent to that of a baby in a crib. Sleep stores such as Slumberland not only sold larger mattresses (enter the queen and king) and sleeper sofas, but also provided sleep experts—sales representatives with specialized knowledge in finding the right mattress for each individual or couple based on body size, sleep habits, and other needs. Essentially, the “science of sleep” had been born. EXPANSION–TODAY Our first product expansion was a natural fit: La-Z-Boy recliners. (After all, people do a lot of sleeping in their recliners.) Founded in Michigan in 1927 by cousins Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker (who, incidentally, created their first mock-up out of orange crates), La-Z-Boy promoted quality and value. Its products resonated with Slumberland customers, and today we are one of the nation’s top sellers of La-Z-Boy upholstery. We soon identified another area in which to expand: bedroom furniture. Our clients required not only mattresses and bedframes, but also dressers, nightstands, and other items for the bedroom. Minnesota House OKs housing budget Bill goes to Senate, does include some eviction moratorium off-ramp language    Forum News Service ST. PAUL — With less than a week to go before they hit their June 30 deadline, Minnesota lawmakers are pushing through their series of 13 budget bills in order to keep state agencies and services open and funded past July 1. The Democratic-controlled House on Thursday, June 24, voted 72-59 to advance a housing budget, which can now move on to the Senate for its approval before it heads to Gov. Tim Walz’s desk for his signature. Of note in the housing budget is a phaseout plan for Walz’s months-long eviction moratorium, put in place at the start of the coronavirus pandemic and resulting economic crash. The budget bill phases out the moratorium 105 days after it is enacted into law, buying renters time to get up to date with overdue rent, utilizing state assistance if they qualify. Landlords will be required to give tenants 15 days notice before eviction. To the ire of Republicans, Walz has maintained his emergency executive powers for more than one year, citing the eviction moratorium as a major reason to maintain authority. Without the moratorium or a backup plan, he said, struggling Minnesotans could be evicted onto the streets amid a pandemic. The moratorium has also been the subject of a recent lawsuit filed by Minnesota landlords. State Rep. Alice Hausman, D-Saint Paul, who chairs the House’s Housing Finance and Policy Committee, said in a Thursday statement that the budget “doesn’t solve all the vexing issues associated with housing insecurity, but as we emerge from COVID-19, this bill will help many Minnesotans recover.”

As the pandemic finally loosened its grip on Willmar and the rest of Minnesota, the Willmar Fests Board sought to highlight those businesses that make Willmar great — its small businesses. That’s when Willmar Fests Board member Sarah Swedburg remembered hearing about an event that Willmar had put on previously, the “Taste of Downtown.” “I have heard nothing but this event since I got to Willmar, so we wanted to bring it back,” Swedburg said. “We thought this was a perfect way to bring the event back, get downtown businesses involved with the

The system is not only just the drains in the street, but driveways, parking areas, streets, alleys and sidewalks. The city had to amend the ordinance due to state permit requirements. “It requires the city to develop, implement and enforce a regulatory mechanism, such as an ordinance, that prohibits non-stormwater discharge into our municipal separate storm sewer system,” said Sara Sietsema, Willmar environmental specialist. charge, City Attorney Robert Scott said. “There are options available if there is evidence of repeated offenders violating these provisions,” Scott said. However, Sietsema hopes charges won’t be needed. Instead, the staff plans to educate the public, including sending out information to lawn services and using the city’s social media accounts to spread the word. “We want to do education. We want to tell people this doesn’t belong in stormwater, that this goes directly in our lakes,” Sietsema said. “Education, generally in these circumstances, will take care of these issues.”
