HOLLYWOOD BY TONY RIZZO HOLLYWOOD -- Becoming famous has its drawbacks. Two-time Irish Film and Television Award winner Jamie Dornan became a fan favorite as Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015), “Fifty Shades Darker” (2017) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (2018). But with that kind of adoration can come unexpected problems. Dornan told The Independent, “I had a situation ... a stalker-type situation before COVID. ... Someone turned up at my house when my kids were there.” The incident scared him so much that he became secretive and withdrew in many ways. “The more I can block that out,” he confessed, “the better it is for me and the family!” It forced him to pull back and change up his approach with his career by slowing things down and becoming more guarded and selective. The notoriety and serial implications that went with the “Fifty Shades” trilogy attracted some savory, obsessed fans. Since “Fifty Shades,” he’s scored with “Belfast” (2021) and his last film, “A Haunting in Venice” (2023). He will soon be seen in season two of the British series “The Tourist,” which will drop on Feb. 29 on Netflix. BY PATTI DIAMOND s winter wraps its chilly arms around us, what better way to embrace the season than with a steaming bowl of Butternut Squash Barley Soup? Bursting with flavor and versatility, this family favorite promises a cozy experience in every spoonful. The humble butternut squash takes center stage, joined by vibrant veggies, hearty barley and the protein of your choice -- whether it’s succulent chicken, tender turkey or satisfying sausage. My family especially enjoys turkey Italian sausage in this recipe. For a vegetarian version, white beans, like great northern or cannellini beans, bring protein and fiber to the party. In your bowl of winter comfort, each ingredient plays a vital role in not just tantalizing your taste buds but also nurturing your well-being. Butternut squash and carrots, both bursting with beta-carotene, are rich sources of vitamin A and C, promoting healthy skin and vision while contributing to immune support. Refreshing celery, a hydrating hero, provides antioxidants and vital minerals. Enter barley, a fiber-packed grain that supports digestive health and helps maintain steady blood sugar levels. Together, they not only satisfy the palate but also nourish your body, making your

winter evenings both delicious and nutritious.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND BARLEY SOUP Yield: 12 cups

Total Time: 60 minutes 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 3 celery ribs, chopped 3 medium carrots, chopped 1 butternut squash (2 to 3 pounds), peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes (about 6 cups) 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes 2 garlic cloves, minced (or 1 teaspoon dried minced garlic) 1 teaspoon rubbed sage or poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon curry powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup pearl barley 4 cups (32 ounces) chicken or vegetable broth 4 cups water 2 cups (one pound) cooked chicken, turkey or sausage Kosher salt and fresh-cracked pepper, to taste Stovetop Instructions: In a large soup pot, over medium-low heat, cook chopped onion in olive oil for one minute. Add celery, carrots and squash, and saute for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the seasonings and barley, and give it a good stir to combine. Pour in the broth and water, bring to a boil, then simmer gently for 40 minutes. Add your cooked protein of choice and heat through; add salt and pepper to taste. Slow Cooker Instructions: Place all ingredients (except your chosen protein) in a 5- or 6-quart slow cooker. Cook on low for 5-7 hours or until

squash and barley are tender. Stir in cooked chicken, turkey or sausage; cook covered for an additional 15 minutes or until heated through. Instant Pot Instructions: Set your Instant Pot to the “Saute” function. Heat the olive oil and saute the onion, celery and carrots until they begin to soften, taking about 3-4 minutes. Add butternut squash, seasonings and pearl barley, and continue to saute for an additional 2 minutes. Pour in chicken or vegetable broth, water, and mix well. Cancel the “Saute” function and secure the Instant Pot lid, ensuring the vent is in the sealed position. Set the Instant Pot manually to cook for 15-20 minutes at high pressure. Allow natural pressure release for 10 minutes, then quick release any remaining pressure. Stir in cooked chicken, turkey or sausage and heat through. Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste and serve.

TRIPLE COFFEE SWEET ROLLS Serves 12

DOUGH:

1/4 Cup instant espresso powder 2 Cups very hot milk, at 190 degrees F 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 large egg, beaten 2 Tablespoons white sugar 3/4 teaspoon fine salt 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 4 Cups all-purpose flour, or more as needed FILLING:

1/2 Cup unsalted butter 3/4 Cup brown sugar 1 Tablespoon instant espresso powder 1Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa ICING:

1 1/4 Cups confectioner’s sugar 3 Tablespoons espresso or strong coffee, or more as needed Combine 1/4 cup instant espresso and hot milk in the bowl of a stand mixer, and let cool until just warm to the touch, about 95 degrees F. Add yeast, egg, white sugar, salt, and 6 tablespoons melted butter. Add most of the flour, attach the dough hook, and knead on low speed until everything comes together and begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Turn mixer speed up a notch, and continue to knead until a smooth, soft, elastic dough forms, adding in remaining flour as needed, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove dough from the mixer, form into a ball, and

place back in the bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, 1 to 2 hours. Meanwhile, make filling. Melt 1/2 cup butter in a small pan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, cocoa, and 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder. Once combined, remove from heat and let cool. As soon as butter starts to cool and solidify, stir to form a thick, spreadable paste. Reserve until needed. Once dough has risen, use your hands to press out the air, and reshape into a ball. For best results, transfer dough to a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator overnight. Dough can be used right away if need be. Very lightly flour a work surface. Turn dough out onto the work surface, press into a rectangle, and very lightly dust the top with flour. Roll out into a 12x18-inch rectangle. Spread filling evenly to the edges, leaving a few inches along one of the long sides free of filling. Lightly brush exposed dough with water; this will help to seal the seam. Beginning with the long side that has filling, roll dough and filling toward the long side with exposed dough to form a uniform log, finishing with the seam on the bottom. Generously butter a 9x13-inch baking dish or pan, and, if desired, line the bottom with buttered parchment. Score the log of dough into 12 equal portions, and then cut each portion with a piece of string as shown. Place cut rolls into the prepared pan. Cover rolls and leave to rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, 1 to 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bake in the preheated oven until puffed, golden brown at the edges, and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center, reads 200 degrees F, about 30 minutes. Let cool for 15 minutes before icing Whisk together confectioner’s sugar with 3 to 4 tablespoons of espresso or strong coffee, or enough to form an icing that can be drizzled over with a spoon. Drizzle icing over rolls and let cool before serving, or enjoy slightly warm.

In a small bowl, combine the butter, parsley, garlic powder and garlic salt. Cut dough into 1-in. pieces; dip into butter mixture. Layer in a greased 9x5-in. loaf pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan. Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Beat brown sugar and butter with an electric mixer in a separate large bowl until smooth. Stir in eggs and mashed bananas until well blended. Stir banana mixture into flour mixture until just combined. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean-about 60 minutes. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Few names of antique folk artists and country crafters are known today, and even less is known about the people behind them. John Boyer, who made seed chests in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the mid- to late 19th century, is one of
