Cardinals talking about resilience in 2025

Willmar, under new head coach Breanna Tupa, hopes to improve upon a 2-21 ‘24

WILLMAR — Resilience is the word on the mind of the Willmar softball team.

After the Cardinals went 2-21 overall and 0-13 in the Central Lakes Conference last spring, new head coach Breanna Tupa has used resilience as the team’s motto in 2025.

“I think it’s incredibly important for athletes to be able to show resilience or the ability to overcome adversity,” said Tupa.

“We have a mix of returning veterans and new talent entering some starting positions this year. The girls have been working hard to prepare for the season.”

Willmar has three seniors eager to boost the team’s fortunes this season.

“I truly have loved watching these girls learn and grow through softball,” Tupa said.

“Their leadership has been instrumental in continuing to build the Willmar softball program.”

It starts with senior captains Grace Etterman and Hannah Magnuson. Etterman is back after being named All-CLC last season.

“Etterman is a standout player to watch this season,” Tupa said. “She led the team in hits last season and posted an impressive 1.064 OPS (on-base-plus-slugging percentage). … She continues to be a key contributor on the field.”

On Magnuson, Tupa added: “She consistently excels on the field and at the plate, impressing me each year with her hard work and dedication. We are proud to have her as an integral part of the team.”

The third senior is Madison Norsten, who was an All-Section 8AAA pick last season.

Other players back in the mix include junior Aubrey Peterson, sophomore Isley Ripperger and freshman Grace Kalkbrenner.

“I am blessed to have the most supportive community and a wonderful parent group to work alongside,” said Tupa, who’ll be joined on staff by assistant coaches Dain Kalkbrenner, Erica Bradford and Laura Nesburg. “I am looking forward to where this season leads.”

New coach

NEW LONDON — With a new coach in the dugout, a senior-heavy New London-Spicer softball squad hopes for a bounce-back season.

The Wildcats were 7-13 overall and 3-11 in the Wright County Conference last season. Jacob Beranek takes over at head coach, replacing Melissa Bergeson after she coached NLS for 10 seasons.

Six seniors are back in the Wildcats’ starting lineup.

Leading that group is center fielder Abby Knudsen. She had a team-high 30 hits last season with nine doubles. She also led NLS with 15 RBIs, 18 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.

“Knudsen commands the outfield with an impressive fielding percentage of .964 and communication,” Beranek said. “She also had a batting average of .400.”

The senior group includes first baseman Jadyn Proehl (.381 average, 7 RBIs), shortstop Aly Wendlandt (.234 average, 2 triples, 8 stolen bases), infielder/outfielder Amber Ronning (.444 average), catcher/third baseman Mallory Johnson (.275 average)

and pitcher/right fielder Sara Kraemer (19-2/3 innings pitched, 10 strikeouts).

Two juniors are also back in the mix for NLS.

Addilyn Nelson is slated to be the Wildcats’ top pitcher and also will play first and third base. Nelson tosses 36-1/3 innings with a 3.28 ERA, 29 strikeouts and 16 walks allowed. She’ll be joined by KayAnna Gehrke, who’ll play left field and third base. Gehrke hit .455 in 12 games.

“Addi battled last year with a season riddled with injury,” Beranek said of Nelson, who hit for a .339 average last season. “Nelson looks at this season as an opportunity to take over that lead role as a player.”

BROOTEN — After an eight-game improvement in 2024, the Belgrade-BrootenElrosa softball team hopes for more upward mobility this spring.

The Jaguars finished 10-13 overall and 6-8 in the Central Minnesota Conference last season. They also were 2-2 in the Section 3A playoffs.

“This year’s BBE softball team is going to be a team that will be very solid on the defensive side of the ball, a fantastic pitching rotation and a team that is going to be able to put the ball in play consistently one-through-nine in our lineup,” said BBE third-year head coach Logan Funk.

Sophomore Mya Worms is back as BBE’s top pitcher. Last season, Worms struck out 95 and had a 3.82 ERA in 108 innings pitched. She also hit .264 with 15 RBIs and 12 runs.

“Her work ethic, attitude and energy that she brings is the reason she’s one of the top

pitchers and players in our conference,” Funk said of Worms.

The final returning starter is freshman infielder/pitcher Lydia Primus. She hit .356 with 21 hits, 13 RBIs and 12 runs.

Funk said of Primus, “Her quick hands and sensational eye at the plate helps her get on base at any given point of the game and will be a key factor at the top of the lineup for this year’s team.”

Young BOLD still has plenty of experience

Though the Warriors have no seniors, 8 starters return from a 13-9 team

OLIVIA — No seniors? No problem for the BOLD softball team.

After finishing 13-9 overall and fourth in the West Central Conference at 8-6 last season, the Warriors bring back eight of their nine starters from 2024. And no players are graduating this year, giving BOLD’s core a season of growth.

“The average grade level of our varsity roster is ninth grade, but we bring a wealth of experience,” said third-year head coach Jessica Aaseth. She has a 27-14 record.

“Four players — Kaitlyn Flann, Abbygale King, Lucy Remer and Isabel O’Neill — are entering their third year of varsity competition. Additionally, we return our AllConference and All-WCT (All-Area) selections in cousins Kaitlyn Flann and Ema Flann.”

Kaitlyn enters her freshman season as the Warriors’ ace pitcher. She compiled 130 strikeouts to 10 walks, a 1.43 ERA and held opponents to a .213 batting average over 137 innings pitched. She also tossed

“Kaitlyn is a powerhouse both on the mound and at the plate,” Aaseth said.

“She’s put in serious work during the off-season, playing with a club team out of the cities and honing her skills.

Kaitlyn Flann fires off a pitch during Game 1 of a West Central Conference doubleheader against Montevideo on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Dirks Park in Olivia.

BOLD seventh-grader Ema Flann safely reaches second base during a West Central Conference game against Montevideo on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Dirks Park in Olivia.

“Ema is an eighthgrader that’ll see time at both catcher and shortstop. Along with playing premium defensive positions, Ema hit for a .436 average with a .488 on-base percentage and a .654 slugging percentage. She had 13 doubles, two triples, 13 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.”

“Despite her age, she plays with a deep understanding of the game,” Aaseth said

of Ema. “Opposing teams might not see it coming, but she packs serious power at the plate with a strong swing. Add in her speed and sharp instincts on the bases, and she’s a constant threat that keeps defenses on their toes.”

Along with Ema, junior Isabel O’Neill will try to fill the lone vacancy at shortstop after Delaney Tersteeg graduated. O’Neill will also play at second base.

The corner infield spots will be filled by King at first base and Kenley Elfering at third base. King is a freshman and Kenley a sophomore.

Sophomore Kaelyn Elfering, junior Maggie Ludowese and eighth-grader Lila Beckler will

be among the players vying for playing time in the outfield. Sophomore Lucy Remer is a utility option for BOLD.

A goal for the young Warriors, according to Aaseth, is to break into the top three of the West Central Conference along with Morris/Chokio-Alberta, Melrose and West Central Area. After going 1-2 in the Section 3A tournament, BOLD is looking for a longer stay in the postseason.

“With the talent, leadership, and determination on this team, we have the potential to achieve great things,” Aaseth said. “More than anything, I want these girls to compete, have fun, and create a season to remember.”

Young Blackjacks have a new head coach

Nick Gruwell

DAWSON — As a new head coach to the program, Nick Gruwell is unsure how his Dawson-Boyd softball team will fare this season.

Gruwell, who previously coached junior high softball for the Blackjacks, takes over a varsity that was 5-8 in the Camden Conference and 5-12 overall last year. He is replacing former head coach Josh Dorn, who coached one season.

With some players away for travel and others awaiting the winter weather to pass, anticipation to get the season into full gear is high among the Blackjacks, who graduated All-Area Second Team member Taylen Jorgenson along with Allison Estling and Lauren Larson.

“We have a good bunch of girls,” Gruwell said. “They want to be able to play.”

LQPV was 18-7 in 2024 with a 12-1 record in the Camden. That put it in a tie with Minneota/Canby for the top spot.

“Both Piotter and Sawatzky logged significant minutes last season and had nice statistical years,” said Eagles head coach Scott Sawatzky. “We lost our catcher from last season and will be looking to two ninth-graders to fill that void. Five seniors lead the way with first baseman/ outfielder Jalyn Lee, second baseman Kayla Jahn, third baseman Kendyl Shelstad, shortstop Brandi Meyer and outfielder Zoey Dockter.

Also patrolling the outfield are returning juniors Caleigh Conn and Rya Borstad.

“Defensively, we had everyone returning with the exception of our catcher from 2024,” Scott Sawatzky said. “We also have some younger girls that have gotten stronger and are pushing for playing time. The competitive nature of our team keeps everyone on their toes and pushes them to give their best every day.”

Shelstad is the team’s top returning hitter after batting for a .410 average, a .465 on-base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage. She had 32 hits with nine doubles and three home runs. Shelstad also tallied 27 RBIs and 22 runs.

Borstad (.324), Lee (.311) and Meyer (.306) also had averages better than .300 last season. Borstad drove in 19 runs and scored 15. Lee scored 26 runs and drove in seven. Meyer had 10 extra-base hits with eight doubles and two triples. She also had 21 runs and 12 RBIs.

Junior Kelsey Palmer will be Litchfield’s top option in the pitcher’s circle.

“Kelsey’s a standout pitcher known for her accuracy, speed on the base pads and clutch performances,” Besemer said. “Last season, Palmer recorded a 6.879 ERA but the coaching staff expects that number to drop drastically with one year of experience under her belt.”

Also back from the junior class is outfielder Charley Estrada.

Two sophomores — outfielder Autumn Thiel and catcher Paizli Johnson — are also returning.

“(Piazli and Autumn’s) versatility and competitive spirit make them a force on both sides of the ball,” Besemer said. “Charley Estrada contributed significantly last season with eight stolen bases.

“Expectations are high as they continue to develop their game.”

Besemer also looks for newcomers like sophomore Tayah Damerow and freshmen Nora Block, Ali Pollock and Stella Braaten.

“Each played integral roles in last year’s junior varsity campaign,” Besemer said.

Bulldogs are long on experience in ‘25

Paynesville has 9 players who started for a team that went 9-5 in the conference in ‘24

PAYNESVILLE — There is no shortage of experience back for the Paynesville softball team this spring.

Nine players who started at one point in 2024 are back this season for the Bulldogs. The goal is to improve on the team’s 12-12 record from last season. That included a 9-5 record in Central Minnesota Conference games and a 2-2 record in the postseason.

“We have both our top pitchers returning in (Arianna) Messer and (Madison) McNab,” said Bulldogs head coach Zach Nelson, who is in his sixth season and has a 73-50 record.

“Throwing strikes will be key with a team that should score a lot of runs and be able to play defense.”

Messer, a senior, had a 6-3 record with a 4.00 ERA and 54 strikeouts. She also scored 20 runs and drove in 12 in the batter’s box. As a team, the Bulldogs gave up 7.4 runs per game in ‘24.

McNab is a junior this season. She hit .385 with four home runs, 25 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

That’s just the start for Paynesville’s offense.

Senior Kaydence Roeske is back after putting together a .430 average with three home runs, 30 runs, 17 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. She’ll be joined by senior Kylie Pauls (.320, 27 runs, 12 RBIs, 15 SB), senior Grace Roberg (.390, 14 runs, 13 RBIs) and senior Graysin Miller (.281, 16 RBIs). Another member of the senior class is Rayna Spanier, who scored 13 runs and had 11 RBIs last season.

Paynesville’s offense put up 6.9 runs per game in ‘24. That ranked fourth best in the CMC behind Kimball’s 10.9, Eden ValleyWatkins’ 8.1 and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City’s 7.2.

Good news starts on the mound for RCW

DANUBE — Finding offensive production will be key for the Renville County West softball team.

going to need to find offense to win,” new Jaguars head coach Dean Ehlebracht said. He returns as head coach for the first time since 2019. “We graduated four seniors last year who contributed a combined 42% of our offensive production.”

But, the good news is RCW returns AllCamden sophomore pitcher Mackenna Hinderks. She had a 7-9 record in the circle
