Changes are in the air ...

As we move closer to spring and a change of seasons, we also want to take this opportunity to share a few changes that are happening here at Live it! Magazine.

You may have noticed you were waiting for this latest issue of Live it! Magazine a bit longer than usual. Generally published in early February, this issue was delayed a bit due to a decision to change publication of the magazine from six times a year to four times a year, now publishing quarterly issues.

Other changes include a bit of a facelift in the overall design of the magazine, in an effort to freshen things up and keep it lively.

Speaking of facelifts — no, we are not going that far, but how about a facial, a gentle face massage, a full body massage or maybe a mani and pedi?

How many made a New Year’s resolution to take better care of yourself in 2020?

How are you doing on that during the doldrums of winter?

In this issue, Carolyn takes us inside Ridgewater College’s cosmetology program where they offer more than a haircut.

Ridgewater’s full-service salon and spa provides a full array of services to allow us to “pamper” ourselves. These services provide a glimpse of what is also available out in the community.

Self-care is crucial to one’s overall well-being and those who know share their expertise on things to consider when we become overwhelmed, stressed and need to focus on pampering ourselves a bit more.

For starters, our style column shares some tips for a manicure — what fun styles they have these days, and this is a great way to feel a bit better inside and out.

We get an early look at the upcoming Wisdom and Wine event put on by the Friends of the Library, and the ‘What’s Happenin’?’ calendar once again shares an abundance of activities, offering something for everyone.

And, last but certainly not least, check out our food column, which gives permission to “indulge in chocolate” from time to time! Who doesn’t love chocolate?

Women need to know we need to ‘take care of ourselves and not to feel guilty about it.’

T

he room is dimly lit, instrumental music plays softly and salt lamps glow at the head of each of the half-dozen massage tables where one Ridgewater College student is giving another student a facial.

“Move onto movement number 12,” intones Melissa Loehlein in a voice as smooth as the lotion her students use on the faces, heads and shoulders of the lucky ones on the receiving end.

In the next class, the roles will be reversed as the students in the cosmetology program at the Willmar school practice the different techniques of a facial on each other – draping warm towels on upturned faces, doing stress-relieving massage from fingertips to the top of the head and learning the science behind skin care and how to mix a perfect blend of serums for different skin types.

This inner sanctum of education for the school’s programs in massage therapy, aesthetics, cosmetology and nail care is the training grounds for some of the people who will deliver total relaxation and care to others – perhaps to you.

As part of their training, the students provide these services to customers from the community at the college’s full-service salon and spa and will eventually deliver their specialized care as employees at businesses throughout the region.

The programs are some of the fastest growing programs at the college, said Melissa, director of the cosmetology program. The students and teachers know the value of their work and know that it’s important for people to take time to take care of themselves.

“I think these types of services are so popular and in high demand in today’s society because of people’s lifestyles,” said Melissa.

“People get so busy with work and family and taking care of others, that they need that relaxation on the other side of the coin, and that balance.”

Dr. Katy Lundell-Stuhr, who teaches the massage therapy classes at Ridgewater, agrees.

“I believe women are in a particularly interesting place right now, where we are pulled in so many different directions, caring for others,” said Katy.

“And our own self-care keeps getting pushed down the list and all of a sudden we’re at the bottom and then we can’t care for others properly if we’re not caring for ourselves.”

Massage therapy students learn about anatomy, pathology and holistic health, as well as techniques for different types of relaxation and therapeutic massage.

They also learn about operating a business, according to Katy, who also works as a chiropractor and is on a committee working to establish state licensing standards for massage therapy in Minnesota.

People get so busy with work and family and taking care of others, that they need that relaxation on the other side of the coin, and that balance.

In addition to such standard cosmetology services as hair and nail care, students at the Ridgewater salon also provide new, specialized services including “sugaring” as an alternative to waxing of body hair and applying NovaLash eyelash extensions, which are extremely popular with young women.

Cosmetology students are taught to help people “look and feel better,” which can boost a client’s self-esteem,” said Melissa.

“When you can take somebody and make them feel good, when maybe they came in and weren’t feeling so well, and they leave happy, there’s something to be said about that.”

Clients who understand the value of selfcare try to budget their time and money to make sure regular appointments for a massage or pedicure don’t get brushed to the wayside. “We’re busy as women. We have a lot – between work and kids and family – there’s a lot of responsibility,” said Melissa.

She said there are women – and men – who come to the Ridgewater salon like clockwork for services such as pedicures and facials. “It’s just part of what they do to help to balance stressful lifestyles,” Melissa said.

Katy said it can be “empowering” for women to “take care of ourselves and not to feel guilty about it.”

She said taking time to be pampered can send a strong message.

“It’s just crucially important for us, in this overly busy, overly scheduled, very stressful period that we take time for ourselves, give ourselves the permission to say ‘I’m important enough. I will take care of others better when I take care of (myself),’” said Katy.

“I think that shows our daughters and our sons and our nieces and our nephews how important that is.”

Her students get it.

Crystal Carlson of Hutchinson calls herself a “busy mom with two kids” who sees a massage therapist about every six weeks.

“So I know how she makes me feel – wonderful and relaxed – and that atmosphere that brings you down. I always feel like I’m floating on a cloud, so that’s the atmosphere I want to be able to provide for others,” said Crystal, who is midway through her training to be a massage therapist.

She said it’s good for people to slow down.

“Everybody’s busy and just flying around all the time. They don’t take the time for themselves,” Crystal said.

Deb Wahl of Springfield said she feels called to be a massage therapist in order to help others step out of their “busy world” and to slow down and relax.

“It’s an energy thing,” she said. “My life purpose is to help people and bring calming energy to them.”

Katy said the human touch can be “extraordinarily powerful” and a massage can be transformative.

“Typically, I say it’s like Christmas morning for them when they get done with their first massage because they’re like, ‘why haven’t I been doing this my whole life?’ They’re typically very relaxed, they’re not wearing their shoulders like ear muffs anymore. They stand taller, they’re smiling. It’s like ‘ahhh, I feel fabulous,’” she said.

Katy said adding a massage to a wellness routine that includes getting exercise, drinking water, eating well and getting enough sleep works together to “feed our body and our soul in a very good way.”

She said the bottom line is people need to believe they are “important enough” to take time for themselves.

The price of being pampered doesn’t have to break the bank Ridgewater College Salon and Day Spa offers a full array of services at a fraction of the cost

The idea of splurging on yourself with a massage, pedicure, facial or a cut and a color can sound tempting, but the reality can be costly.

But pampering doesn’t always come at a high price.

Dubbed by some as Willmar’s best-kept secret, the Ridgewater College Salon and Day Spa offers a full array of services at a fraction of the cost of typical spas and salons – $30 for an hour-long massage, $5 for a haircut, $20 for a pedicure with paraffin, $15 for nail extensions, $22 for a 90-minute tissue-toning facial and $55 for a six-hour spa retreat.

The caveat is that the services are provided by students who are still learning the techniques for massage and skin, hair and nail care.

All the students are supervised by trained instructors and the services are reviewed with clients before they leave.

The many repeat customers is a testament to the quality of services, according to Melissa Loehlein, director of the cosmetology program at Ridgewater.

The salon, located in Building B on the campus, 2101 15th Ave. NW, is open 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. most of the year and 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. during the summer. The salon is open only when classes are in session for the 14-month long cosmetology program.

Self care: You are worth it!

Over the past few weeks, people have shared their New Year’s Resolutions and goals with me.

The more I listen, the more I realize that people have an inherent desire for self care. Many of the resolutions are along the lines of improving health through improved diet or increased exercise, spending more time with family, engaging in relaxing activities, journaling and reading more.

Self care is about finding balance in our lives and is defined as, “any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health.” It has to do with the state of our heart and the intention of our thoughts.

Some people equate self care as a “selfish” act. Brene’ Brown, a research sociologist and author states, “We cannot practice compassion with other people, if we don’t treat ourselves kindly.”

For those who read the Scriptures, you are familiar with the command to “Love your neighbor as yourselves.” The reality is that

self care is an act of self love. Our care and love for others will be bolstered by our care and love for ourselves.

To change current habits and patterns, we need to be more intentional about our lives, which means creating space and time to engage in self care activities.

This is not always easy, so I recommend starting with small steps and goals that are attainable.

Self care doesn’t need to be a huge time commitment or financial investment. It can be as small as sipping tea for 10 minutes,

The following list may give you a place to examine your current status and set goals going forward.

1. Create a “no” list. Saying no is honoring your core values and is harder on the giver than the receiver. “When you say ‘yes’ to others, make sure you’re not saying ‘no’ to yourself.” — Paulo Coelho@ projecthappiness.org 2. Pay attention to sleep, diet and exercise.

Improvement in any of these areas will increase your energy and your mood.

3. Take care of your physical and mental health.

Follow up with medical care by scheduling your physical, dental and mental health check-ins.

4. Use relaxation exercises and practice meditation. Two free phone apps that I suggest are CALM and BREATHE. 5. Spend intentional time with people you love and who love you back.

6. Find opportunities to laugh. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. Laughter boosts the immune system.

Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.

petting your dog or cat, taking three deep breaths, or receiving and believing a compliment.

It can also mean bigger things like going on a retreat with friends, getting a pedicure or massage, or going on a week’s vacation.

We often allow our current and past circumstances to control our lives – which then results in our stresses gaining more power over our lives than our own desires and intentions. We feel stuck and helpless.

The biggest threat to maintaining a self care program is not recognizing when our lives are out of balance.

If we truly are “stuck,” it can be very helpful to find someone to talk with who can help us see our life from a broader perspective while providing some new ideas and solutions.

Sharing our lives with others and asking for help is an excellent example of self care.

In some big or small way, I hope you will embrace caring for yourself. It is healthy and important and will allow better opportunities to love and care for others.

Be aware of the balance in your life and work to make your efforts intentional.

7. Define your values. It will give you some grounding while also providing you with some direction in your decision making.

8. Make a gratitude list. Gratitude shifts your focus and improves the quality of your life.

9. Be intentional about setting self care goals. Find an activity you can commit to on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Share your goals with someone and find a “self care buddy.” Accountability usually fosters a greater sense of commitment and follow through.

10. Say the following sentence out loud everyday, “I am worth it!”

Only with examination of your current habits and intentional change to new patterns can self care be improved. You are worth it!

and would drive over the same route again and again and again looking to make sure no one was lying injured in the street.

During the darkest times, she begged to be put in a room without windows or a door so she could protect others from the harm she was afraid she would cause.

HELP IS AVAILABLE

About 1½ years after her symptoms started, Karen was diagnosed with OCD, which is an anxiety disorder that can cause people to have recurring, unwanted thoughts that can make them “feel driven to do something repetitively,” according to the American Psychiatric Association.

“This illness takes so much of your time,” Karen said.

In 1987 she sought help from Woodland Centers, which was called West Central Community Services at that time, and was later enrolled in an experimental drug study at the University of Minnesota.

Karen said she and her husband lost “five years of their life” from the onset of the illness to the time when treatments helped her regain stability while dealing with a disease she said she’ll have for the rest of her life.

Through medications, therapy and the unconditional love and support of her husband and late mother, Karen manages her OCD. Although she forfeited her career as a pharmacist, she “felt she had something to give” and is using her skills and first-hand experience of what it’s like to live with OCD to help others who have a mental illness.

She’s been working part-time at Woodland Centers since 1993. In her current job as a peer mentor, Karen serves as a supportive advocate and role model for people with mental illness.

She provides the added perspective of someone who’s been there.

Sometimes her job involves tasks like helping someone balance their checking account, but more often it involves listening.

“I feel so humbled I can walk with them,” she said, adding that the work also helps her heal. “I feel so blessed and thankful I am where I am and to do the type of work I get to do.”

Having a strong support system with people who will take time to listen and provide non-judgmental encouragement is a crucial part of the healing process for people with mental illness, she said.

“It’s OK to talk about it.”

And it’s OK for the people listening to not have answers but to simply sit quietly and be present.

Every day she spends time praying for the needs of people in her life and offering prayers of thanksgiving for the people who help her when she needs it.

Having positive people in your life – along with eating well, staying physically active, getting good sleep, managing stress, taking proper medications and counseling – are important steps in mental health self-care, she said.

Karen said she wishes seeking mental health care would be as natural as seeking medical care for a broken bone or sore throat.

“The brain is an organ. It can get sick too,” she said. Seeking treatment is a sign of strength, not weakness.

“Go in for help, please, please, please,” she said. “I know how hard it is, but go. Go get help.”

No matter how dark times may be, Karen said there is help and hope.

“Don’t ever give up. Don’t ever give up hope,” she said. And above all, “be kind to yourself.”

Self-care is the ultimate act of love. From eating right to massages to curling up with a good book, there are so many ways to put yourself first. Why not start with your nails?

Having polished nails can make you feel special. They are an easy way to complete an outfit or even try out a new trend. There are so many ways to wear and care for your nails. Here are some tips and tricks for giving your nails some love.

Find the right manicure The types and styles of nail polish are endless. Finding what works for you is what will help you feel your best. Gel polish is great for long-lasting wear while acrylic nails are perfect if you want a different shape all together. A traditional polish is great if you like to switch up your color.

Don’t forget about the shape!

From square to oval to almond to coffin, nail shapes are plentiful to pick from. Search nail shapes on the internet and show them to your nail technician at your next appointment. You can try filing them yourself, but be sure to check out online tutorials beforehand.

Mix it up Tired of the same classic coat? Why not try out an ombre shade or adding some sparkle to your ring fingers for your manicure. Adding a little change can make a big difference to your mood.

Keep it classic For momentous occasions and for days when you want to look your best, a simple nail style is sometimes the best. Keep things classic for a chic look that never goes out of style.

Boundaries at the heart of self-care

I recently gave a talk about heading off anxiety and depression.

The most essential aspect of preventing depression and anxiety is to maintain and practice healthy boundaries in your life and relationships.

This is something I often cannot stress enough.

So, what are boundaries? Boundaries are based on your beliefs, thoughts, feelings, decisions, choices, wants, needs and intuitions. Boundaries are basic guidelines that people create to establish how others should behave around them. They establish how you want to be treated.

Healthy relationships have boundaries that are emotional, but are also physical.

Respecting personal space, being mindful of giving enough personal space and understanding how another person wants or needs to control their personal space or environment is an important part of respecting another person’s physical boundaries and can make all the difference in maintaining a healthy relationship with a friend or prospective loved one.

But what happens when we aren’t sure of the need for our own emotional or physical boundaries? This can happen due to our own low self-esteem or sense of identity which creates neediness and codependency on others.

This can result in others treating us with little care or respect. We can struggle to say “no” or set limits with others. Our desire to please others can come at the cost of taking care of ourselves.

We can become so selfless that we literally betray our own feelings, needs and well-being in order to avoid any possible anger or disapproval from others simply because we can’t always be agreeable.

The cost of that self-betrayal becomes anger turned inward. Anger turned inward becomes depression.

The truth is that boundaries are the heart of selfcare. Without boundaries, we are merely unable to protect our emotional health.

Saying “no” is tough for many of us, but having depression and/or anxiety is so much tougher. If you have trouble saying “no”, then here’s a tip: the next time someone approaches you to do something you can’t or don’t want to do and you don’t have the nerve to say a flat out “no,” then instead try this, say “I’ll have to get back to you.”

Millenials may need to boost life insurance

If you’re a Millennial – born between 1981 and 1996 – you’re either in the very early or relatively early stages of your career, and as the old song goes, you’ve got a lot of living to do.

Still, it’s not too soon to think about a financial issue you may have overlooked: the need for life insurance.

Regarding this topic, Millennials need to ask three key questions: When should I purchase insurance?

The answer to this question depends somewhat on your stage of Millennial-ism. If you’re a young Millennial, perhaps just out of college, single, and living in an apartment, your need for life insurance may not be that great. After all, you may well have other, more pressing financial needs, such as paying off your student loans.

But if you’re an older Millennial, and you’ve got a mortgage, a spouse and – especially – children, then you unquestionably need insurance, because you’ve got a lot to protect.

How much do I need?

Millennials who own life insurance have, on average, $100,000 in coverage, according to New York Life’s 2018 Life Insurance Gap Survey. But that same survey found that Millennials themselves reported they need coverage worth about $450,000, leaving an insurance deficit of approximately $350,000. That’s a pretty big gap, but of course, these figures are averages and may not apply to your situation. Still, you should know how much insurance you require.

You might have heard that you need life insurance worth about seven or eight times your annual salary. And while this isn’t a terrible estimate, it doesn’t apply to everyone, because everyone’s situation is different. A financial professional can look at various factors – your age, your marital status, number of children, size of mortgage, etc. –

to help you arrive at an appropriate level of coverage.

Keep in mind, also, that your employer may offer life insurance as an employee benefit. However, it might be insufficient for your needs, especially if you have a family, and it will probably end if you leave your job.

What type of life insurance should I get?

Many people initially find life insurance to be confusing, but there are basically two types: term and permanent. As its name suggests, term insurance covers a given time period, such as 10 or 15 years, and provides only a death benefit. It’s generally quite affordable, especially when you’re young and healthy. Permanent insurance, on the other hand, offers a death benefit and a savings component that allows you to build cash value. Consequently, the premiums are higher than those of term insurance. Again, a financial professional can help you determine which type of insurance is most appropriate for your needs.

Thus far, we’ve only been talking about life insurance. But you may also need other types of protection, such as disability insurance, which can replace part of your income should you become ill or incapacitated. And you may eventually want to explore longterm care insurance, which can help cover you for the enormous costs of an extended nursing home stay.

The Friends of the Willmar Public Library welcome you to the second annual “Wisdom & Wine” fundraising event on Thursday, June 11, at the Willmar Conference Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dessert is served at 6:30 p.m.

FAITH SULLIVAN

Faith Sullivan is the author of many novels, including “The Cape Ann,” “What a Woman Must Do,” “Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse” and, most recently, “Ruby & Roland.” A “demon gardener, flea marketer and feeder of birds,” Faith is also an indefatigable champion of literary culture and her fellow writers, and has visited with hundreds of book clubs. Born and raised in southern Minnesota, she spent twenty-some years in New York and Los Angeles, but now lives in Minneapolis with her husband, Dan.

MINDY MEJIA

Mindy Mejia was born and raised in a smalltown-turned-suburb in the Twin Cities area. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Fine Arts from Hamline University. Other than brief interludes in Iowa City and Galway, she’s lived and worked in Minnesota her entire life. Her debut novel, “The Dragon Keeper,” was published in 2012. She lives in the Twin Cities with her family, and is the author of “Strike Me Down,” “Everything You Want Me to Be,” and “Leave No Trace.”

Leif Enger grew up in Osakis and worked as a reporter for Minnesota Public Radio before writing his bestselling debut novel “Peace Like a River,” which won the Booksense Award for Fiction and was named one of the Year’s Best Books by Time Magazine and the LA Times.

His second novel, “So Brave, Young and Handsome,” was also a national bestseller. It was a Midwest Booksellers Honor Book and won the High Plains Book Award for Fiction. His first novel in 10 years, “Virgil Wander” follows the inhabitants of a Midwestern town in their quest to revive its flagging heart.

CultivateHER conference celebrates women

clange@wctrib.com The third annual CultivateHER conference, presented by women for women, will be held March 5 at the MinnWest Technology Campus in Willmar.

Featured speakers and panel members for the day-long conference include professional women all from within a 45-mile radius of Willmar, said organizer Kim Madsen.

“It’s a really powerful day,” said Kim. The conference is an “opportunity to serve women in our area” who are looking for ways to build connections and leadership skills.

Kim, who operates a consulting company and is director of community impact for Woodland Centers, said the conference is designed to meet the personal and professional needs of women who can “come together and feel empowered.” Her goal is to have them leave at the end of the day with insights that will allow them to make a bigger impact in their work, family and community than when they arrived.

Speakers this year include business owners, former CEO, medical providers, a digital designer, a human resources professional and a pastor with talk titles like: ► “Are you living and leading with intention?” ► “Don’t stop reinventing yourself” ► “Discovering yourself after caring for everyone else” ► “Live your life and love it.”

Panelists are equally as varied with significant professional credentials and moxie.

“There’s a lot of energy and a ton of buzz,” Kim said.

After each speaker’s presentation, attendees will participate in table talk and write down the action they want to take at the end of the day.

“Everybody walks away with a very individual experience,” said Kim, who encourages women to “grab a friend and come and enjoy the day – because they will leave different than when they came.”

The conference begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. The cost is $169. Space is limited.

Doit!-yourself -yourself Repurpose meaningful items

The holidays are over, winter sports are winding down and some of us are nestled indoors.

As you look around your home you may be thinking you’d like to freshen your decor up a bit, but want to keep spending to a minimum after the Christmas gift buying season.

No problem.

The first thing you should do is walk around all of the rooms and pick up things you like or haven’t

used lately. Look in closets and drawers, even the basement and garage.

Think outside of the box, because the original purpose of an item doesn’t have to stay that way.

Bowls, frames, ceramics, trays, vases, blankets, scraps of wood, stuff on a workbench or in a toolbox – anything can be repurposed or layered with something else. Sometimes you might want to paint something or hot glue items together.

In my first example I saw something I liked on the internet so I decided to try it.

To start, I pulled out my Mom’s sterling silver tea set.

Now I happen to like the colors in the tarnish so I didn’t clean it, but you certainly can. I have two Bibles that belonged to my mother-in-law.

Next, I just arranged and layered everything on the tray until I liked how it looked, cut a few pieces off silk floral in my tub of supplies and there you have it. I can change out the floral to match the season, plus enjoy these mementos of our parents instead of having them stuck in a closet.

Next, I created a sign using some scrap wood, which I painted with leftover paints and glued it together to resemble a frame. I dug around in the workshop and garage to find rusty old metal stuff that I then hot glued to the wood to make the word “Love”!

It’s a nice accent on a wall in our bedroom.

A framed picture can easily be repurposed. Take out the picture, cut some twigs you think are interesting (mine are from red dogwood bushes in our yard), and hot glue them to the back of the frame. It creates such an interesting look when hung back up on the wall.

If you have a button jar you can easily refresh a frame by hot gluing a bunch of buttons on the glass or on the frame to give it a new look.

I was gifted this metal basket and have enjoyed changing out the contents and placing it on a different surface each season.

It lent itself well to display some precious ornaments for Christmas and will then be used to show some old books which have special meaning to me.

Indulge it!

Chocolate – good for the spirit and the soul

I am fully aware that winter-get-away-swimsuitwearing vacations are underway and I totally realize spring is “around the corner” and shorts and tank tops will soon replace turtleneck sweaters in closets.

Typically, this calls for going for the greens, curbing the carbs or keeping up with keto to get a winterworn body in shape.

But, gol darn it, sometimes a sit-down with a luscious plate of chocolate is necessary for the spirit and the soul.

So, in this edition, Live it! dishes a little religion. No guilt or confession involved – just pure rejoicing.

My go-to fudgy brownie recipe comes from a 1973 version of The Good Housekeeping Cookbook.

I’ve made the recipe so many times the chocolatecovered page sticks to the next.

A fondue pot of warm, creamy chocolate that’s perfect for dipping cookies, crackers, marshmallows – and yes, strawberries and other fruit if you want to go a healthier route – is a new-to-me recipe I found online. It’s glorious.

Even healthy eaters can have some guilt-free chocolate with this gluten-free and dairy-free peanut butter cookie topped with chocolate that comes from Live It! photographer and style columnist Erica Dischino.

Enjoy! You deserve it!

FUDGY BROWNIES

1 cup butter 4 squares unsweetened chocolate 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt Optional: 2 cups coarsely chopped nuts

In a large saucepan melt butter and chocolate over a low heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, add sugar and cool slightly.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating until well blended after each addition. Add flour, vanilla, salt (and nuts if using) and pour into a greased 9x13 inch greased pan.

Bake in a 350-degree oven for 30-35 minutes, cool and top with sifted powdered sugar. * Makes about two dozen brownies

CHOCOLATE FONDUE

2 cups heavy cream 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate, chopped 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon brandy Put water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream.

When the cream is hot to the touch add chocolate that’s been chopped into small pieces. Whisk until smooth. Add vanilla and brandy.

PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE (Gluten-free, dairy-free)

1 cup of almond flour 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter 1/4 cup of maple syrup (or honey, simple syrup or agave nectar) Sugar for rolling the cookie dough balls in (either coconut sugar or regular sugar) Dairy-free chocolate chips for chocolate drizzle *Recipe makes 10 - 12 cookies Mix flour, peanut butter and maple syrup until a dough forms and shape into 10-12 balls, roll the balls in sugar and press down with a fork in both directions to make a grid so each cookie is about ½-inch thick.

Bake on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for 8-10 minutes in a 375-degree oven. The cookies bake quickly so once the tops look golden brown, take them out.

Melt chocolate in 30 second increments in a microwave until the chocolate is melted but not burned and drizzle on top or dip half of the cookie.

There’s time to… if we only take the time

There are times when I think the historical hermits had it right. And then, reality sets in to correct that thinking.

All of us know what our lives are like today.

We are busy, at times overwhelmed, too many irons in the fire, too many kids’ programs/ activities to attend and, then, there is the drain that comes with physical/mental and other family issues.

Typically what happens is we don’t take care of ourselves.

Also, let’s not kid ourselves. Those hermits of old didn’t live the glorious life we may think they did and, suddenly, we’re back to the reality of today.

How do we take care of ourselves when parental/familial/professional duties are constantly calling us away from our own well being? Where’s the balance? In a word: “Help!”

I wonder if taking care of oneself doesn’t begin with being cognizant of the multiple pathways to being a loving and lovable person.

There must be time for ourselves. You can call it your private place, your alone time or your time to recharge. We desperately need that alone time because it allows us to take a few deep breaths and try to make sense of what’s happening.

Maybe the commotion in your life is caused by a family member or matter — how does one diplomatically settle such delicate issues?

Your alone time will, at the very least, give you moments to hope/pray for a settling and a bringing together again. It doesn’t hurt to have a glass of your favorite wine as you ponder along that quiet pathway.

your social club, your church, your group of friends or your family? Wherever you interact with others, you will laugh and that simple act of joy brings all sorts of physical and mental attributes with it.

I know people who will only have a glass of chardonnay while socializing. Well, grab a bottle of Glacial Ridge’s Kimberly Chardonnay and talk, emote and laugh. You’ll enjoy the wine’s classic creamy chardonnay taste and fine finish.

There must be time to care. We must care for ourselves as well as care for others.

Look around and you’ll see someone who is alone and needs help. I firmly believe in the adage that what goes around, comes around, so help those in need. However …

There must be, once again, time to take care of yourself. Find your quiet/safe spot and relax. For some that may mean a form of meditation. For others, it might mean a soulful prayer. For some it might mean finding a very quiet spot in

nature. Find that spot and maybe a small glass of Versasi Dry Marsala will fit in as you enjoy the wine’s sweetness and calming personality.

There must be time to volunteer.

Perhaps volunteering finds you being in an inter-generational environment. Good! Read to some children, sing with them, take them for walks and introduce them to the wonder of nature. No wine needed here – volunteering is the salve. Make time for it.

There must be time for love. With all the incivility in today’s world, let love shine – it’s the light that leads us to understanding and patience. Leonard Cohen wrote a song entitled “Anthem” which is about hope in dark times. One of the songs best phrases is: “There’s a crack in everything – that’s how the light gets in …”

Love is that light but it isn’t always the fluff and muff stuff. Sometimes it means tough love – a type of love that shows our concern but sets limits – but it’s still love. Maybe a glass of Starling Castle Riesling is the perfect match for love because of its sweetness and elegant balanced fruity tastes. Make time for loving.

And, now for the big one.

Make time to laugh. Whether you are caring, socializing, by yourself, volunteering or loving – laugh. Find your favorite beverage and raise a glass or cup to the world around you and laugh.

Make time for the light – see it, feel it, embrace it and spread it. In the face of tears, tragedy, joy and celebration – faith, hope, love abide, but the greatest of these is love.

There’s time … share it.

As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon!
